pring is almost here, the evenings are getting lighter and the clocks spring forward on the 27th March. There are daffodils and crocuses appearing on hedges and in gardens, showing us that the weather is warming, and good times are just ahead, and the island is waking from its winter snooze. Although I mustn’t forget that we have had snow in March before!!!! It’s now just a waiting game. This month I have gotten together with the Isle of Wight Cats Protection to work on a feature for the Senior Kitizens. They have some real beauties in the centre at the moment, just waiting for their forever homes. They often get overlooked for the kittens and younger cats, but these mature felines have great personalities and many more years of love to give. See our feature on page 4 and let this be the month that you adopt and make a difference to one of these senior kitizens. There is a lot of talk about the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June and on page 14 you will find our handy guide to organising a street party to celebrate this occasion with neighbours, family, and friends. Although it’s not happening until June it’s time to start organising now. If you fancy doing some puzzles go to pages 18 and 19 for this month’s sudoku, wordsearch, anagrams and kriss kross. Hope I haven’t made them too easy this month! I hope you have a great March and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

She is an indoor cat and is affectionate, loving and doesn’t want for much... just a snuggly bed, fuss and food. Because she is older she is often over looked but she has so much to give and just wants a place to call home. She is a short hair domestic tabby.

News Report from Cllr Phil Jordan - Ryde North West. Tel: 07929 376375 | Email: phil.jordan@iow.gov.uk I am really pleased to be able to update you on a couple of key projects Ryde Town Council are bringing forward this year since acquiring St Thomas’s Church and Vectis Hall for the community benefit a little while back. Architects and project managers have been appointed for the internal works required at St Thomas’s to bring the interior of the building into a suitable space for the adaption into the award winning 147 Ryde Youth Service. For those of you that may have noticed the scaffolding on the building recently I am pleased to say that the roof has been made watertight and repaired as necessary from a grant we received from Historic England to pay for these works. In all, the Ryde Town Council has received almost £70,000 in grant funding since ownership was achieved and much of that will be spent on upgrading the interior with new kitchen facilities, new toilets, heating and other adaptions as required. I am particularly encouraged that we have put the youth community at the heart of planning & design within the building and encouraged by the start of works and the completion date due early autumn this year, subject of course to all materials being available. I know from talking with users of the existing rented premises at 147, High Street, they are excited and encouraged by these developments and keen to relocate their fantastic youth facilities into this new building which offers so much 6
more space and opportunities for future growth and additional development. Just to remind you that this building has been acquired with a Public Works Loan Board facility which is covered in costs by the saving of rent to a private landlord in the existing youth premises in the High Street. The whole project, helped by the £70,000 grant funding received already, comes at cost neutral to the Town Council with added bonus of the increasing capital value of the building over the next 50 – 100 years and more. I am pleased that we can say we have left a legacy for those young people coming along behind us, in generations to come, that will be much appreciated and respected. In the same vein, we have now managed to appoint architects to design out and help restore Vectis Hall over the next year or two. Currently, the plan is to restore the building back to community use but also with plans to install Ryde Town Council in the building as well. At present the Town Council rent offices in Lind Street and we are confident that savings in the rent outlay to a private landlord can offset much of the costs of restoring Vectis Hall in the longer term. Like St Thomas’s, we have been awarded £30,000 grant funding already and are in the process of applying to other grant funding opportunities that exist and may exist soon. Once again, as well as continued over the page
News Report from Cllr Phil Jordan Ryde North West. removing the blight of the building on our community landscape, (it has been derelict for over 25 years now) we are bringing it back into community use for perpetuity, creating public space and placing our Council in a firm and positive position in the heart of the community. I have suggested we somehow build a café into the plans as I think the outside space would serve as a pleasant stop for people looking for refreshments in a garden type setting in the town and helping to bring the building back to life. All part of the direction of travel for Ryde Town Council and our community. More to follow next month.

Let’s march into March with some dates of upcoming events, facts and historical events. Saint David’s Day, or the Feast of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, falls on March 1st, the date of Saint David’s death in 589 AD Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday falls on March 27th this year and is a day to honour mothers and other mother figures, such as grandmothers, stepmothers, and mothers-in-law. Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday falls on March 1st. Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast. This year, Lent officially begins on March 2nd. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and will end on April 14th - three days before Easter Sunday. The “Ides of March” was a day in the Roman calendar equivalent to March 15th. It was considered a deadline for settling debts. It was also the day Julius Caesar was assassinated. If you were born in March, your birth flower is a daffodil! March babies are spoiled with two birthstones: aquamarine, and bloodstone which symbolize courage and there are two zodiac signs in March. Pisces, which is until March 20, and Aries which is from the 21st. Every year, March and June finish on the same day of the week. The name for March comes from Mars, the Roman god of war. It was named as such in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. This year the Spring Equinox occurs on March 20th. This is when the sun is directly above the equator, making the day and night equal length. The Anglo-Saxons called March “Hlyd monath” meaning “Stormy month” or “Hraed monath” meaning “Rugged month.” The popular social media outlet Twitter was launched on March 21, 2006, with the first tweet going out the same day. It was posted by the founder, Jack Dorsey, which read “just setting up my twttr.” Saint Patrick’s Day occurs every March 17th, celebrated in many countries to commemorate the day Saint Patrick died. The Eiffel Tower was ascended for the first time on March 31st, 1889. Gustave Eiffel, led a group of government officials and members of the press to the top. The elevators were not in operation yet, so the journey was made on foot and took over an hour. 8

The spring flowers are in full bloom and Ryde is getting ready for a Spring/Summer programme of activities that haven’t been seen since 2019 and prior to Covid19. This brings a message of hope. We are now faced with the reality that Covid19 is part of a list of contagious illnesses we have to be mindful of in protecting ourselves and others. It has been a tough and tragic time for us, and I cannot say what the future will bring us, but I can say in Ryde there is a commitment to take opportunity for the benefit of residents whether economic or social. Here are few things to look forward to: A 2022 Full Programme of Events and Activities in Ryde We will see a full return of favourite events this year such as Ryde Carnivals, Mardi Gras, IW Pride, Classic Cars, Beach Sport Festival, and Scooter Rally amongst others. Ryde Town Council takes over the Harbour and Eastern Gardens from 1st April and with the introduction of deckchairs and beach equipment last year, Ryde’s beaches and esplanade will be coming alive for residents and tourists alike. The big new event on 11th September is the finale of the Tour de Britain Cycling event. Ryde will be the start of the final stage of the event, and this is massive for the Town and will really boost our economy. The Town and IW Councils will be planning a range of cycling activities prior to the event so watch out for them. Jubilee Celebrations in Ryde 2nd to 4th June 2022 Ryde Town Councillors are being given a 10
grant of £250 each this year to contribute to celebrations in their Ward if they wish and residents are already planning street parties and events to celebrate the Queen’s 70th anniversary. Jubilee Honours for Ryde’s Magnificent 7! Ryde Town Council has agreed to honour 7 residents living today and born before and in 1952 who have contributed to the development of the historic Town of Ryde. This could be in many ways whether through community work, local politics, business, art and every conceivable way. The 7 will count for every decade of Queen Elizabeth’s reign and they will collectively receive the Freedom of the Town. There will be other awards for those born from 1953 onwards. If you know of good candidates, please email Hannah@ rydetowncouncil.gov.uk or pop-in to Ryde Town Council offices on Lind Street. A special event will be held as part of the Jubilee celebrations. This year Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. There will be activities throughout the year to celebrate this anniversary with a four-day UK bank holiday from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. On Sunday 5th June people are encouraged to share friendship, food, and fun with neighbours as part of the Platinum Jubilee Big Lunch celebration. Information on hosting such events can be found online at www. edenprojectcommunities.com/blog/the-bigjubilee-lunch Organising a street party just for residents and neighbours is simple and does not need a licence but think about planning one now. The number one tip for holding a party is to plan early. If you encounter any difficulties speak to your local councillor who will be happy to help. There are myths about running a street party: Myth 1: It’s too difficult You should not need a risk assessment – as long as consideration is given to the safety needs of all those attending, common sense precautions should be enough. Myth 2: You need a licence You do not require a music licence at a street party unless amplified music is one of the main purposes of the event. You may need a Temporary Events Notice if you plan to sell alcohol, but this is not required if participants are going to bring their own. A Temporary Events Notice currently costs £21 and covers up to five hundred people. Myth 3: The law requires complex forms for a road closure and councils need to sign off every detail. For most small parties in quiet streets where you need to close a road, all your council needs to know is where and when. They will need at least 6 weeks’ advance notice as they will need to put in place a temporary traffic regulation order. 14
Challenge jobsworth attitudes. Alternatively, you can keep the road open and organise a gathering on private land, such as a driveway or garden, without any requirement to fill in council forms. Myth 4: The law requires a fee to be charged for a road closure. The law allows councils to charge for the cost of arranging a traffic regulation order although they are not required to do this and are encouraged not to. If your council is making a charge, you have every right to question why. Myth 5: It’s too late to ask for a road closure. Some councils set deadlines to help them manage their work, but there are no deadlines in law, so if they seem unreasonable ask then to be flexible. Myth 6: You need to buy expensive road signs. Island Roads may be able to provide signs, but you can hire them. Myth 7: You need expensive insurance. There is no requirement from central government to have public liability insurance. The Big Lunch website have negotiated special rates for street party insurance starting at just £28. Myth 8: You need a food licence. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has confirmed that you don’t, however you must ensure that any food provided is safe to eat. Myth 9: You need a licence to run a raffle or lottery. You do not have to register a lottery if it is ‘incidental’ to the event, but tickets must be sold at the event. Anyone at the event (including children) can take part in this sort of lottery. No more than £100 can be deducted for expenses and no more than £500 on prizes (excludes donated prizes). (Thank you to Cllr Chris Quirk, Mayor of Shanklin for collating and sharing this information)

News Report for Wootton Bridge from Cllr Daryll Pitcher Tel: 07511 045 145 | daryll@planetmail.net The sudden and unexpected announcement from Island Roads that they are preparing to reconstruct New Road has been good news that has brought many other serious problems with it. No-one would suggest that the road doesn’t need major work and the willingness of Island Roads to finally address this is welcome. I have been pressing for this to happen for many years and addressing the state of Wootton’s roads was one of my promises when I was elected. However, everyone agrees that the work needs to happen and how exactly it should be carried out are two separate things entirely. Closing the road during the day every day for three months is not an acceptable solution. There are many people who require 24-hour access for a number of different reasons including work and health. I must also take issue with Island Roads as they failed to communicate with me adequately prior to notifying residents about the proposed closure and I only received the letter on the same day as everyone else with no prior knowledge of the contents. I am also concerned that I may not have received a copy at all had it not been for the quick wittedness of our Parish Clerk who caught wind that a letter (contents unknown) was about to be sent out and requested that she and I received a copy. At the time of going to press I have not yet had the meeting I have requested with IW Council Officers so I cannot tell you what the outcome will be. All I can say is that I have taken on board all your concerns and will present them on your behalf at every opportunity. 16
The gate at the car park end of the recreation ground is currently missing but should be fixed by the time you read this. A fault had developed with the mechanism that made it unsafe and likely to trap fingers. It was taken away as a safety measure and to be fixed. With any luck it will be back in situ soon, fully functional, and safe once again. On a related matter the Parish Council are looking to replace the old Village Green signage which is falling apart with new signage plus a noticeboard at the High Street end. Work should also soon start to upgrade the pathway. I am often asked about the Floating Bridge, and I keep in regular contact with other Councillors and Council Officers. Action has been taken to try and improve reliability for instance purchasing a stock of the most frequently used spare parts to reduce downtime, but we recognize a longterm solution is needed. Nothing can be decided though until mediation regarding the current situation is completed. I watched a presentation regarding the Island’s UNESCO Biosphere Status recently. It is a far more interesting subject that you might think as the Biosphere does not just cover “the environment” but also the people living within it, our history, our community and how we all live in harmony with and interact with our surroundings. It drew my attention to how we manage big planning applications and projects such as gravel extraction. Can these really happen and maintain harmony between community, ecology and the people and animals that share this island?

At some stage in our lives someone we know will die. Grief can be overwhelming, and we may be surprised by our reaction to grief. There are no time limits on grief and how we react. If you want to support someone who has been bereaved there are simple things you can do. If you are worried about saying the wrong thing, then say that rather than not saying anything. You can offer to do shopping, take something to eat, suggest taking a gentle walk to get some fresh air or just sit with them. You can also put them in contact with Cruse Bereavement Support. Cruse is here to support anyone, no matter who has died or when they died. On the Island Cruse supports adults, children, and young people. Trained bereavement volunteers work one to one, mainly by phone and video conference. We provide a confidential and non-judgemental service, giving grieving people time to talk to someone outside their circle of family and friends. There are a number of ways you can get support; you can self-refer by calling 01983 523030 (24/7hrs) or by emailing isleofwight@cruse.org.uk in either case you will need to leave your name and telephone number. If you prefer you can complete a referral form online www.cruse.org. uk/get-support/contact-your-local-branch and whichever method you chose a trained bereavement assessor will contact you from a withheld number. If you want to find out more about Cruse Bereavement Support and how you could support the charity, please use the contact details above. This can be by training as a volunteer or helping with our fundraising activities.
