The Island is springing to life again and there are plenty of events happening in May and you’ll find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 12 and 13. Whilst writing this the sun is shining, I’m not sure how long for though but lets hope its here to stay so we can start enjoying our beautiful Island and some of the great walks and outdoor activities it has to offer. In the meantime grab yourself a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy doing the puzzles on page 10.

News Report from Cllr Ian Stephens - Ryde West - Lantern Cottage, The Orchard, Pellhurst Road, Ryde, Email:- ian.stephens@iow.gov.uk Mobile:-07970 009523 Waste/Refuse A lot has been said about the new Waste Contract and the Isle of Wight Council has set up a query assistance portal on their website. www.iwight.com/waste I have been quoted in the press (from a question asked at a Ryde Town Council meeting) that if in doubt put your query in writing to your local Councillor, however, if you have difficulty in processing your concern, you can also ring the IWC direct on the main number 01983 821000. Self-Build Your House A news release from the Isle of Wight Council makes reference to the above opportunity and this may be an option which some may consider. Self-build is when you design, plan and build your own home. There are a number of ways you can do it. The level of involvement you have in building your home can vary depending on which way you choose. Some people will do the building work and labouring themselves, some will hire a contractor to do it for them. Self-builders may be individuals or part of a group.

Countryside Management in Ryde
The Isle of Wight Council has recently transferred the management of 3 countryside sites in Ryde to ‘Gift to Nature. I feel that ‘Gift to Nature’ will improve and manage these sites for the benefit of its residents. In the coming months Ryde Town Council will be working with ‘Gift to Nature’ to develop a scheme of improvements for Swanmore Meadows and Binstead Wood. This opportunity allows more local control over our local area. New Youth Café I was pleased to see that we have a new youth café for young people aged 11- 19 for Ryde with free drinks, snacks and art sessions. Café 3 is open every Wednesday between 3.00pm and 4.30pm at the Eric Warner Centre (Scout Hall) on St. John’s Hill. For more information contact youthoffer@spectrumhousing.co.uk

These range from the wellloved Puckpool swing, Ryde Gas Company tokens, silver pocket watches and a longcase clock from Ryde jewellers, to the silver trowel used for the foundation stone of Ryde Town Hall, Ryde-invented Victorian tin openers, and luggage scales and a beer barrel trolley from the end of Ryde pier. Over 7,000 images of people, places and things play on a large screen - these are often used by visitors researching their family history. Additionally, find yourself, friends and teachers in the ‘wide’ collection of panoramic school photos in the schoolroom!
