Tramp in the Woods Living on an island we are spoiled for choice with local wildlife, and nothing beats the sighting of a red squirrel and it’s thanks to local photographer Tramp Woods that I can have the pleasure of sharing this one on the front cover. Dave Krowson AKA The Tramp (Tramp Woods) moved to the island after a sudden change in his life and after spending many hours sitting in the woods waiting for the opportunity to capture these beauties his friend nicknamed him Tramp in the Woods. The name stuck and has now been adapted into an online trademark through Instagram and Facebook. Tramps favourite subject is the red squirrel and over the past 2 years he has been photographing all species of wildlife and is in the process of finishing his book, ‘Life Thru the Lens’, which will showcase an array of pictures taken by himself and he hopes that the book will be enjoyed by all ages and may encourage others to get involved with our wildlife in whatever form they feel.

Welcome to the May issue of Island Magazines. Another month has rolled by, and we have had some lovely sunny days, especially over the Easter weekend. There were many visitors to the Island who had the pleasure of experiencing what we have right on our doorstep. Do you sometimes forget how lucky we are to live here? I know I do... With another Bank Holiday due at the beginning of May let’s hope the sun is here to stay and then it seems the whole Island is getting ready for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June. I hope you enjoy this month’s issue which is packed with news and information along with some regular features and of course the puzzle section on pages 12 and 13 which I understand have become very popular.

Interesting Facts and Historical Events for May The name May is the modern-day English adaption of the Latin word Maius, which has origins going back to the time of the ancient Greeks. They named the month of May (or Maius) after the Greek goddess of growth. May used to have a very different name in Old English. Back then, the month was referred to as the “month of three milkings.” Unsurprisingly, this meant that during this month, you could milk your cows up to three times per day! May was once considered an incredibly ill-omened time to get married. There’s an adage for it actually, which goes: “Marry in May and you’ll rue the day.” It’s not clear where exactly the saying comes from, but there must have been a pretty good reason not to get married in one of the most beautiful months of the year! May isn’t just a bad time to get married, though. There’s one superstition that says that buying a new broom in May is unlucky. Oh, and apparently, you shouldn’t wash any blankets either! May is a pretty good month for US presidents. Every other month of the year, at least one US president has died, but never in May! May is the month that the Eurovision song contest is held every year and has been held every year since 1956 (with the exception of 2020). May is a special time for Star Wars fans worldwide. May the 4th is celebrated as Star Wars day, due to the way the date sounds similar to “May the Force be with you”. The Empire State Building formally opened its doors on May 1, 1931. At the point of its construction, it held the record for being the tallest building in the world. Many other sky-high constructions have since dwarfed it. Back in the day, it wasn’t a good May if you didn’t celebrate it with a maypole. In the UK, they were present since at least 1350 AD. Celebrants would erect a long pole and attach flowers, garlands, and strips of fabric to it, around which certain dances would take place. The birthstone for May is the emerald symbolising fertility and rebirth and May has two birth flowers – the Lily-of-the-Valley and the Hawthorn. The Hawthorn flower is a symbol of hope, while the Lily-of-the-Valley represents the return of happiness and sweetness. May also has two Zodiac signs, Taurus and Gemini. People born under the sign of Taurus are said to be ambitious and smart, yet trustworthy. Those born under the sign of Gemini are said to be passionate, adaptable, and smart. Many famous people were born in May, such as Queen Victoria, and Catherine the Great, Mark Zuckerberg, Karl Marx, Clint Eastwood, Wes Anderson and John F. Kennedy, 4

News Report from Cllr Phil Jordan - Ryde North West. Tel: 07929 376375 | Email: phil.jordan@iow.gov.uk I’m really pleased to say that finally Ryde Marina has been transferred to Ryde Town Council. You may have noticed a new harbour office in place since early April which is a much-needed improvement on the old harbour master’s office. Discussions continue about managing the sand in the Marina and we do hope to maintain passage in and out by dredging appropriately going forward. The next steps are to upgrade the pontoons and install water and electricity. New flag poles have been ordered and we shall be flying new flags once installed along the Marina wall by the esplanade. Further along the esplanade there is a planned scheme to fix brackets to the lamp posts and attach banners the artwork of which have been created by local artists and show interesting buildings and places in Ryde. We hope the colours and designs provide a splash of colour and interest for visitors and residents alike. Work begins shortly, also, to move the beach sand build up against the Marina wall. We are planning to move thousands of cubic metres of sand back up the beach towards Appley where sand on the beach has reduced and moved easterly towards the pier over recent times.
and entertainment events over the summer period. I look forward to much more developing in this regard in the coming years. Ryde continues to lead the way as a Town Council and investments in the town have already attracted private investment, new shops and businesses, £2m funding for the old Packs building and continued investment in the High Street. We are working hard to get the High Street pedestrianised and prevent vehicles from entering during the day and hope that a barrier/bollard can be installed shortly. All part of the High Street Action Zone scheme which saw nearly £1m granted to Ryde in help and improve our High Street. Grants are available also for shopfronts, subject to some conditions, and we have created a shopfront design code to help shop owners to access information and plan for new shopfronts. Grant application can be accessed here: https://iwhaz.uk/ ryde-building-improvement-grants/
Slightly further afield, I was very pleased to see the works, completed in April, to make the road junction at Ashey much safer. I do thank everyone for their patience and understanding whilst the three months of work took place. It was a dangerous junction with many accidents previously, but the new layout has a much wider line One of the outcomes of taking over the Harbour has been that Eastern Gardens has of sight, a slightly staggered junction and a small bullet roundabout, all adding to the also come into the ownership of the Town safer operation of the junction. We do hope Council and we can see already the benefit of that over Easter weekend where the Town for less, or better still, no accidents there in the future. Council in partnership with Jack up the 80’s promoters put on a series of bands and Let’s hope summer arrives soon with music events on the gardens together with a positive shine and warmth on all we pop up food stalls and real ale bar as a free event for all to attend and enjoy. A fantastic are doing in Ryde for the benefit of the and very successful event using the Gardens community, for residents and for our visitors alike. as a great space for community gatherings 6

• Another reminder about calls from domestic insurance providers. These are prolific and persistent – do not engage with them and don’t agree to take any insurance. These insurances generally aren’t worth the paper they’re written on and once you have signed up they will keep ringing. These cover items such as white goods, tv’s, Sky and drainage and all operate in the same way. We recently heard of a victim who had over 40 direct debits on his account to these insurances! • We have been contacted by a resident who had a couple of men at his door this week asking to buy his motor home – which they said they believed was for sale. These weren’t islanders and were travelling around in a white pick up. Their approach would be to try to negotiate a silly price or pay a deposit and drive the motor home away and you would never see it or the money again. DO NOT engage with anyone on the doorstep.

News Report for Wootton Bridge from Cllr Daryll Pitcher Tel: 07511 045 145 | daryll@planetmail.net In the last month I have been able to arrange a meeting of all interested parties (IW Council, Island Roads, residents and businesses) regarding New Road and its repair. The meeting was felt to be fruitful by all who attended with a better understanding of the problems faced by different groups now clearer in everyone’s minds. New Road is not an easy nut to crack hence why the rebuilding and resurfacing works have been in limbo for so long. I am now confident that things are moving forward, and I have another meeting set up with some of the stakeholders to discuss specific issues. Whatever is finally decided it will not be quick or easy to fix the road, but there is now the understanding that it does need to be fixed and what that will likely entail for the people that will face disruption and those tasked with carrying out the work.
from the council. As always if you have any problems, please get in contact with me.
I am aware that the gate on the recreation ground has been missing now for some considerable time. I have chased this up and will look to get this resolved as soon as possible. In the meantime, please take extra care when letting dogs off their leads so that they do not run off. Also take care when moving vehicles about in the car park as children and dogs may suddenly emerge from the rec without warning.
I’m sure the seals, squirrels, badgers, bats and sea eagles will be totally fine with this intrusion into their lives once they understand it is for the greater good and have read a report that says they will be okay. I’m equally sure that twenty-five fully loaded lorries a day turning from the Harwoods direction on to Station Road at the Cedars will in no way make that junction even more dangerous than it already is except for all the extra accidents caused. As you can tell I am absolutely against this plan and will move heaven and hell to stop it if I can. Please get involved with WAGE and help get this application rejected.
The £150 energy grant to Council Tax payers is now in the process of being rolled out across the island. The plan is for all those who are signed up on Direct Debit for the Council Tax to receive theirs by the end of April / early May. In cases where no Direct Debit is set up letters will be sent asking you to apply for the grant 8
A few days prior to writing this I was informed that the planning application for gravel extraction at Palmers Farm had been submitted. Having read the majority of the so-called supporting evidence I must say that these plans are even worse than I had feared. I urge anyone with an interest in protecting the quality of life for all Wootton Bridge residents to get involved with WAGE (www.wage-iw.org). Only concerted action taken now can protect our environment. What angers me most is the description of it in the application as “sustainable” as though digging a massive hole in the ground on green fields next to a nature reserve is friendly to the environment.

Come along on the 15th May (10am-4pm) at Garfield Hall to see what is happening in your Town and the investment that is coming here. Enjoy walking round the Town and the summer of 2022. There is truly a message of opportunity and hope.
Soaring through the sky from March to October, swifts, swallows and martins follow their food and move to areas where insect populations are booming. These beautiful birds are all visitors to the UK, so let’s admire them while they are here! • Swifts are almost always on the go, only touching the ground to nest. • Swallows can be seen gathering on telegraph wires, or swooping low to gobble insects and collect mud. • House Martins often nest in groups, dashing between built-up areas as well as the countryside. • Sand Martins prefer to nest in colonies on rivers, lakes and flooded gravel pits.
