TheQuirkyTeapotreopenedtheirdoorsin earlyAprilfortheirsecondyearoftrading andmuchtothedelightoftheirregular customerswhohavemissedthemoverthe wintermonths.OwnerNatalie,has rechargedherbatteriesandtakenonanew cookandtogethertheyhavebeenplanning somemouth-wateringmenusandupdates totheiralreadypopularlunchesand afternoonteas.Theyarerenownedfor theircakesandthesearedefinitelystaying onthemenu.
TheQuirkyTeapotisavintagetearoom withquirkinessandalovely,relaxed feelingmakingittheperfectplacefora morningcoffee,lunchandafternoontea withcakes.Theyarelocatedonthe outskirtofNewportwithinafarmsetina beautifulcourtyardwithsurrounding countrysideviewsandinthesunshine,you reallycouldn’taskforanythingmore.

Havingspentlongenoughtryingtoget RydePoliceStationopenagain,Iwas pleasedtobeabletomeetanddiscussthe communityconcernswiththePolice& CrimeCommissionerrecentlywhenshe visitedRyde.Coveringwideranging subjects,Iemphasisedthenecessityforthe publictobeabletovisitthePoliceStation andforthePolicetoplacesomepriorityon whatisdescribed,colloquially,as‘lowlevel crime.’Fortoolongunderbotha previousChiefConstableandtheprevious Police&CrimeCommissioner,theimpact oflow-levelcrimesuchasanti-social behaviour,vandalismandgraffitihavebeen placedwaydownthelistofprioritiesand gettingaPoliceresponsetoreported incidentshasbeenfragmentedanddifficult, atbest.
Iampleasedtosaythatthereseemstobea changeofvisionanddirectionandIam encouragedthatthePolice&Crime Commissionerhasplacedthesemattersas animportantcommunityproblemand directedresourcestoaddressandcombat thegrowingproblems.Theproofofthe puddingisalwaysintheeatingsoletussee ifthewordsturnintoactionsandthefirst stepcouldbethere-openingofRydePolice Station(evenifonlyonaparttimebasis). Inourdiscussions,thePolice&Crime Commissionermadeitclearthatshehas somebudgetforyouthschemesandI’m verypleasedtosaythatRydeTown Council’syouthservicehasnotonly benefiteddirectlyfromthePCCfundingfor outreachschemesinthecommunitybutare alsobiddingforfurtherfundingtoaddto thealreadyfantasticyouthserviceschemes wehaveinRyde.
Asmanyofyouknow,wehaveaHigh StreetActionZonegrant(HAZ)whichis seeingworkdedicatedtotheHighStreet takeplace.Iampleasedthatanumberof
shopowners(not multinationalshopowners whoareexcludedfromthe grants)haveappliedfor, andbeengranted,fundingtoimprovetheir shopfronts,including,insomecases, developingaccesstotheupperfloorof shopsfromtheHighStreetwhichcould openupthepotentialforconversionsinto muchneededaccommodation.
Thegrantsareawelcomeboostforthe HighStreet,andwelookforwardtoseeing howthemoneyimprovesthestreetvista andcomplimentsthepublicspacework shortlytobegin.
Thenextstepsaretodesignand implementdrainageschemesthatassist withthehardsurfacerunoffintothe drainagenetwork,thusreducingvolumes enteringthesystem,todesignandagree howthestreetfurnitureandgreenspaces canbesetoutandprovidedand,perhaps mostimportantly,improvingthesurfaceof theHighStreettoencouragepedestrians andshopstouseoutsidespacesothat peoplecandwellduringtheirvisits.
Arecentfurthergrantfundingbidhas beenmadeandwhilstwewaittohearif wearesuccessfulornot,Icansaythatwe havehadsomeincrediblypositivefeedback fromthegrantfundersundertheirActive Travelaspirationsandfunding.Ifthis comestofruition–andwewillknow shortly–themoney,thenavailableto completethewholescheme,wouldbein excessof£1m.
Itisworthnoting,inpassing,thatRyde TownCouncilhasattractedgrantsof around£1.5minthelastyearaloneandall thatmoneyisbeingspentonimproving thecommunityspacesandservicesthat Rydehastooffer.Afantasticachievement byanystandards.

ExcitingNewDevelopmentsintheTown!
Onthe25th April2025,theRydeTown AnnualMeetingwasheldatSt.George’s Centreandtherewere3exciting presentationsonnewbuildingprojectsthat havestartedwithjustover£4Mofexternal funding.Theseinclude:
1.The Department onCrossStreet thatwillbeanArtsandLeisureCentre with£2.5MoffundingfromtheArts Council.ThisisledbyShademakers,a Ryde-basedCarnivalArtscompany. Althoughthebuildingworkhasnot
started,theDepartmentis openandavarietyofarts projectsinpartnershipwith RydeArtsarenowbased there.
2.Therestorationandrevitalisation of AppleyTower.Thisprojecthastaken about6yearsinthemakingandIwas overjoyedtolaunchthestartofworkat thebeginningofApril.Theprojectis beingledbylocalcharity,Natural Enterprise.
3.St.Thomas’sChurchand NetworkRyde –Workhasnowstarted onrenovatingandrestoringSt.Thomas’s Churchintoayouthandcommunity centrewithfundingof£600,000from YouthInvestmentFund.Youngpeople fromNetworkRyde(Ryde’syouth service)havebeenactivelyinvolvedandit wasajoytobewiththemwhenthe projectwasofficiallylaunchedinApril.
Otherimprovementsincludingthe HistoricHighStreetproject,Ryde Marina,andRydeInterchangeareall continuingandwillbefinishedinthe summerorlaterintheyear.RydeTown Council’spartnershipwithUniversityof Portsmouthisstartingtoseedividends withsupportonarangeofprojects throughouttheTown.

TheFriendsofStMary’sHospitalCharityhascomethoroughsome turbulenttimesinthelastfewyears,butthegoodnewsisthattheyhave survivedtotellthetale.
Inspiteofbeingasmalleroperationwithjusttheshoponthegroundfloor foyer,theyhavemadeitto2023inahealthystateandarecontinuingto supportandsupplementtheexcellentserviceattheIsland’sNHSTrust,with theirmissiontoraisemoneytoprovideequipmentandfacilitiestohelpmaketheexperience betterforpatientsandstaff.
LesleyMyland,ChairofTrusteesofFriendsofSt Mary’sHospital,said“thankyoutothosewho helpeduswiththeirkinddonationsandfundraising efforts,andathankyoutootothosestaff,volunteers andtrusteeswhohaveworkedsohardtokeepthe retailserviceandtheCharitygoingindifficulttimes. Weshouldalso thankthestaffatSt Mary’swhohave goneoutoftheir waytouseourshopandkeepusprofitableenoughto channelfundstotheCharity.
Wewereabletoprovide£49,000worthofequipmentlast yearincludingnewwheelchairsatboththemainand northreceptiondesksforvolunteerstousewhen supportingvisitorstothetrustwhomayhavemobility problems.Wewereabletosupplykeyrapidresponse equipmentknownasanEMMAdevicetotherapid responsekitthatisheldbytheon-callODPteamand finallywewereabletosupplyresourcessuchasgames, booksandsensorytoysforthePaediatricsOccupational TherapyDepartment.Wearealsoveryexcitedabout fundingaveryspecialimmersivetrainingexperiencein thenewambulancecentre.Thisisfocusedonimproving immediatecareontheIslandtosavelivesincriticalsituationsbothforindividualsandthose involvedinamajorincident”.

TWMWildlifeandNatureIsleofWightis alocalgroupformedbyTrampWoodsand WarrenMasonandtheyarecurrently workingonmanylocalprojects,from holdingwildlifephotographysessionsfor thosewhoneedhelpinunderstandingand settinguptheircameras,totipsandtricks intogettingbetterphotosofthewildlifeon theisland.Thesesessionsarepublished throughtheirFacebookgroupandhave becomeverypopularandarebeingenjoyed bymany.
TheTrampwasrecentlyaskedbythe Hampshire&IOWWildlifeTrusttodoa talkforthem,showinganarrayofhis picturesplustalkingaboutrelevantstories.
