The Perfect Shot

E A F

I think this months front cover picture is so captivating and shows what beautiful wildlife we have here on the Island. The photo was taken at Alum Bay by local wildlife and photography enthusiast Zoe Cox. Zoe says that although she has lived here on the Island all her life it’s only been in the last year or so that she has taken an interest in local wildlife, especially red squirrels, foxes and birds of prey. Zoe is really enjoying her new hobby and only recently brought her camera which goes everywhere she does as she never wants to miss an opportunity to catch a moment in time forever… When Zoe took this picture there was a group of about 7 foxes but this particular vixen took a liking to Zoe and was happy to sit and pose whilst she snapped away and as you can see she got the ‘perfect shot’.

News Report from Cllr Michael Lilley – Green Councillor for Ryde East Ward Email: michaellilleyiow@gmail.com or call/text 07769551578 The last month has been busy and I have lots of news for you. I am also very excited as I have just written and published a children’s book “Papa Owl and Rocket the Dog’s Big Flying Adventure”. The book is part of the Age Island Friendly Campaign and is about making children and adults aware of how the older generation has much to offer. Papa Owl lives on Sandy Island with his dog Rocket and his two owl friends Barney and Snowdrop. He is an inventor and granddad to Fifi and Flossie, who want to be inventors when they grow up. In his first adventure, Papa Owl builds a flying machine that flies silently like an owl. The book was launched at IW Literary Festival in October as part of Celebrating Age Month. It is beautifully illustrated by local artist, Helen Stiles, and at present available through Age UK Isle of Wight and County Press. My report this month highlights the importance of community action and how local people are trying hard to make our town better through campaigning for local causes or helping others in need. Winter is coming and it is time to act now! Warmer Ryde is a new scheme now funded by Ryde Council and is a partnership between Ryde Town Council and the Footprint Trust. So if you are on low income and worried about your fuel bills this winter, need your house insulated but cannot afford it, or your old boiler packs up and you have no money to replace it, this scheme could help you. Ray of Footprint Trust explains “Showing people how to use their heating systems to best effect, can save money and keep people at a comfortable temperature. Replacing old dangerous white goods with safe energy6

efficient ones is also a wise thing to do. We can also arrange for grant-funded insulation of most homes” To learn more and keep warm this winter, please contact Ray on 01983-822282 or email ray@footprint-trust.co.uk Stop Hazel the Dormouse becoming Homeless - Update - Save Westridge Farm (Hope Road) Campaign. The campaign to save this important agricultural and ecologically rich land from being built on is still in full swing and a date for the planning application has not been set. As reported previously, Ryde Town Council had recommended against approval of planning permission for Hope Road development for 80 houses on an active dairy farm. IWCC Planning officers have asked for more ecological reports from developers. The Hazel Dormouse has been sighted on the land and a new local group, Save the Ryde Dormouse, has been set up as part of a new Ryde Green Group. The Hazel Dormice lives in hedgerows on the site and are an endangered species. New homes may be needed in the area but not at the cost of making Hazel homeless. For more information see www.ptes. org/campaigns/dormice and keep up to date with the Save Westridge Farm on www. facebook.com/savewestridgefarm Veterans and Men in Sheds I attended the Isle of Wight Civil Military Partnership meeting on behalf of the Council last month and there was a strong discussion on the needs of families on the Island with members actively serving our Country and veterans who had served courageously. There is a need for more support for those veterans

News Report from Cllr Michael Lilley who are experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. A new fund for local groups supporting veterans is being launched in November which provides up to £20,000 grants for schemes that help veterans and families fully engage in the community. www.gov.uk/government/publications/ covenant-fund-guidance-on-how-to-apply At the October meeting, the Men in Sheds project presented and announced the plan to have a Shed particularly for local veterans in Ryde. The’ Men’s Shed’ movement sprung up as a way to engage men in purposeful activity, particularly after retirement, as well as providing a more informal setting to think about health and well-being. Members use the shed as a place to enjoy the company of others while giving something positive back to the community. There are Sheds now springing up across the Island and some are for men and women or for specific groups. In Ryde, local veterans are leading on the project. For more information please contact Lois on: (01983) 525282 or email: lois.prior@ ageukiw.org.uk There is also a Shed at Aspire on Dover Street. www.ageuk.org.uk/isleofwight/our-services1/ age-friendly-island-lottery-programme/menin-sheds Accessibility – Isle Access and improving accessibility for local residents and tourists Isle Access is a Ryde group of local pioneers working hard to make Ryde more accessible for those who find it hard to get from their home to even the local shops. Isle Access are working with South-West Trains to convert disused buildings at Ryde Train and Bus Station into an Esplanade Café and Accessibility Shop where local people can get help, access to information and equipment that will help

them. Jan Brookes, one of the founders, received an Age Friendly Island Award last month and it was richly deserved. See www.isleaccess.co.uk Save the Ice Rink You would have heard of the sad news that Ryde Arena is currently closed and there is a campaign to save it as it is a much needed facility. Local people are angry that the landlords of the building took back the building clandestinely from the Ryde Arena Trust headed by local community activists. You can sign a petition to Save the Rink on: www.change.org/p/isle-of-wight-councilsave-our-rink

A CCTV camera has finally been installed on North Walk and although the long summer nights have passed it should capture any late night speeding offenders doing their racing around Canoe Lake in the early hours.

I will continue to liaise with our local Police and monitor their progress on this.

It was disappointing to see Ryde Arena locked by bailiffs after the Trust and employees have put so much work and effort into keeping the Its a shame the camera wasn’t put up during place open for our community, its ironic that the summer as this was undoubtedly the the owner was bailed out by the pro-activity, busiest time of year for late night antisocial hard work and efforts of the Trust only to loitering and speeding. eject them once the premises were made dry and refurbished. Saturday (3rd December) it will be a fun filled I will be asking how many vehicles with loud exhausts have been fined at the next police group meeting Chaired by Phil Warren and will give an update next month. I would like to take this opportunity to urge all local residents who live around Nelson Street area extending from the Esplanade to Park Road and George Street to Monkton Street to make sure their homes are secure at all times. We have disturbingly had many local burglaries over the last month. Our Police are fully aware and tell me they are working with all associated agencies to address the problem, and I hope the offenders are quickly prosecuted. If anyone sees or hears anything suspicious please call the police immediately and report it. 10

Stress, Worry and Low Mood – Counselling? By Julia Bailey If we break a leg, we get help from an expert. It’s important to make sure that our emotional injury and mental health is looked after too. Sometimes our work-place strangles us, family relationships become a struggle, health and financial problems happen and it leaves us carrying a massive sack of emotional rocks, weighing us down. Huge life events hit us like an emotional car crash – divorce; ill-heath; bereavement – why wouldn’t we need some support to work through the emotional damage? Counselling is different to other helping professions; offering a safe space to explore these really difficult and very normal emotional responses to life and bring about change for the better. As a Counsellor, I am a member of the BACP which means that I have rules for how I work to ensure your safety. My approach is gentle and respectful and I provide confidentiality and trust, acceptance and non-judgment, as we look at your jigsaw puzzle and we find the pieces that fit together. Having been a Counsellor for more than 15 years with those aged 6 to 92 years from all walks of life (individuals; couples; families), I have heard many difficult stories and have the solid strength, training and experience to help you resolve your distress. If you would like to come along for a chat to see how you feel about counselling – a call is only a few minutes of your time - take good care of yourself.

Are YOU a Survivor of Domestic Abuse? In today’s society it is an unfortunate fact that many people are in abusive relationships. When this eventually comes to a head often the abused goes to a refuge or similar safe place. During the time spent at this safe place they receive excellent training to help them deal with their situation and help them move on to an extent. However, the nature of some abusive relationships is such that many abused people have not been allowed to develop even the most fundamental skills even as an adult. Whilst the training received from the refuge or similar is very good and is a fantastic foundation for moving on, once that support ceases, as it has to, the person may be left in a vulnerable state and risks making the same life style choices in terms of partners as they did before. Unfortunately this means that the same cycle of behaviour repeats and the abused person can end up in a similarly bad relationship and the whole cycle starts again. The Break the Cycle ‘Mind the Gap’ course aims to build on the foundation gained during the period spent in the refuge and equip the abused person emotionally and practically to move forward in a positive way and literally break that cycle. Realistically not everybody is either fortunate enough to go through a refuge or feels that they need to as they may have made their own arrangements. The ‘Mind the Gap’ course is flexible enough to incorporate people coming from diverse situations which may or may not include formal help from refuges or the like. Break the Cycle Community Interest Company has been lucky enough to receive Lottery funding to run courses to help people who have escaped domestic abuse. Whether you have recently moved away from an abusive relationship or are managing to survive after some time, their course, made up of six modules, will help you to live a more fulfilled life, build your confidence and help you move forward. Break the Cycle’s ‘Mind the Gap’ course uses a range of training material that complements each participants learning style. The modules, each of 2 hours duration, are interactive and engaging allowing the participants to learn through practice and experience rather than just theory. Each participant will be given their own journal to track their progress. We are looking for volunteers to commit to taking the whole course, at no cost, with the proviso that they feed back to the company their opinions on the content, the experience and any other findings.
