News Report for Wootton Bridge Town and County Councillor Barry Abraham Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As I start to write my November report, I think back to my childhood and how cold it used to be by Guy Fawkes Night. My sister and I used to make a guy out of old clothes, there was always plenty of those on a farm and our father made a bonfire out of the hedge cuttings and anything that would burn. Come the 5th November family and friends would come, wrapped up against the bitter cold wind, to watch the guy disappear in flames and bask in the warmth of the fire and watch the fireworks. Thinking back they must have been pretty feeble compared to some of the rockets that light up the sky these days. On the council front, the planning application for 9 properties on Lushington Hill has been recommended for approval, the application is adjacent to the village development envelope. I have asked for it to be determined by the planning committee. Whilst I would prefer not to see any development on the site, I want to see something along the lines of affordable housing, the site is close to village amenities and as I have said before, we have a desperate need for affordable property. The proposal for the former cattery off Palmers Road, I still have no information on. I have been made aware of a forthcoming development proposal by Darwin’s for holiday units on the field they own, on the opposite side of the road to their main entrance. A presentation was made to myself and the Parish Council. I have urged their representative to do a presentation to the residents of Woodside and New road prior to submitting an application. 4

I have had a meeting with representatives of Island Cyclists to carry out an audit of village roads and cycle tracks, to see how we can make them friendlier to cyclists and also people who like to walk on our country lanes. At present roads such as Brocks Copse Road have a 60MPH speed limit and this is part of the Island cycle route. Park Road has also been looked at how we might best make it safer for those on foot or pedal power. This year’s village Christmas Nativity and stalls will be in the Old School on Friday 15th December as sadly the community centre is already booked. Do come along and join in with the carol singing. I have mentioned before about the Plane Tree on the entrance to Lakeside, had become a concern because of its condition and I had asked for the council to carry out a more detailed survey, this has been done and sadly it does look like it will have to be felled. The option to pollard it was considered, alas even this was discounted because of its poor state, so a decision has reluctantly been made on safety grounds to road and pavement users to fell it. I, for one, will be very sad to see its demise because it is such a prominent feature when one crosses the bridge and it will be very much missed after 200 years. Lastly please do not forget the Parish Council meets every third Tuesday of the month, at the Old School, New Road at 7 pm, to look at issues that affect the parish and is a good opportunity to raise any concerns that you might have, at the start of the meeting.

Barry Abraham.

News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde. Email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide I was pleased to hear about the Waterside Trust getting a commitment of fifty thousand pounds from Sport England to help them raise the £170 thousand they need to build an extension to provide dry side Gym facilities as an extra offer for the pool to help generate more income. I’m now working with them to help find further funding to bring the project forward. I had a great day when I joined the Ryde Arena group in the Isle of Wight day Parade, it was fun giving out leaflets and rattling our buckets and as a bonus we raised a further £130 to go towards the Ryde Slide money already raised. They need to raise £5,000 to become a charity, and I joined them on Saturday the 7th on their walk to mark one year since the skaters were locked out of the Rink. As ward Councillor I support the group and will continue to do all I can to bring ice skating back to the Island. The Environment Agency have spent a week jetting out the outfall pipe to help keep it clear and flowing during this winter. We heard at the last Ryde Town Council during the public question time from local residents who live locally that there has been many occurrences of antisocial behaviour and violence around the Shelter at Fiveways Junction. I had already raised this problem at the local Police and community meeting the week before to our local Police who had assured 6

the meeting that the area was regularly patrolled being in such close proximity to the Police Station. They suggested lighting should be put inside as a deterrent to those who loiter in the shelter after dark and this suggestion was raised at the RTC meeting. Lighting is important as without it it’s pointless putting up a mobile CCTV camera, I’ve contacted the Isle of Wight Council Cabinet member and officers requesting lighting is installed. The seafront has returned once again to nature with migrating birds resting and feeding on our sands as they break from their travels to warmer climes, just looking as I write at the many Brent Geese floating about on the Solent today in the sunshine.

If you have any news or information you wish to share with other residents please feel free to email rydemagazine@gmaill.com with your concerns. This month we have been contacted by one local resident who has wants us all to work together to stop anti-social behaviour. Small Steps to Improving Our Environment All actions have consequences and this can be said for the small minority of people who just do not care about the environment and inflict their mess on the rest of us and display anti-social behaviour. Graffiti, tagging and vandalism, along with persistent dog fouling on our pavements and persistent littering, is not a trivial matter and can impact daily on the lives of those it affects and involve additional costs to the rate payer. Let’s ask the question: “How can those in authority stop these crimes if they are not being reported?” We can help ourselves by being vigilant and report what we see to the Police. • Graffiti and tagging is criminal damage and should be reported to the Police by calling 101. If the line is busy, you can always send an online message to: www.hampshire. police.uk/contact-us. Once your call is logged, you will be given a reference number and your enquiry passed to the relevant PCSO in your area for them to make enquiries and deal with the matter. If a new incident occurs, call 101 again and report the incident as this may help to establish a pattern of behaviour. • Dog fouling and littering, which respectively can at worse have very serious health implications on children i.e. Toxocariasis or be an expensive cleaning bill, should be reported to Island Roads. Telephone, e-mail or you can report the issue on online. Ways to contact Island Roads: In Person to: St. Christopher House, 42 Daish Way, Newport, PO30 5XJ or call 01983 822440 or email: info@islandroads.com. Website: islandroads.com/89-contact-us (for interactive map and reporting function) The majority of people are concerned with these issues which are just as important as the larger ones that face the future of the Island. Please don’t ignore it, report it. It may take a little time to remedy, but the future of the island should be a concern for all. 8

RYDE SMALL BUSINESS MONTH When people are asked what shops they would like to see on the island, large retail chains such as Primark often come high up the list. The big multi nationals certainly play a part in the make up of a town; however the desire for these often overshadows the high street gems we already have. Did you know that Ryde has over 100 small independent businesses within town? From life long favourites such as Hurst’s, who opened in the town in 1971, to those who have celebrated a decade like Splash, Bagel Wrap and Kevars Cafe. With a rush of brand new openings in the last 12 months and the fact that we have a butchers, fishmongers, grocers and bakeries on our doorstep, our kind of high streets are the envy of many on the mainland who have turned into clone towns, Adrian Kensit with the familiar look of every other. South Coast Tree Surgeons Throughout November we are asking people to help us celebrate our small independents. Most have heard of the ‘shop local’ philosophy, and in the run up to Christmas it acts as a good reminder for us all to support our indies. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Think local first. Even just spending as little as £10 a week at an independent shop can help to make a difference. It is easy for us to stick to our routines, however taking some time to check out your town can throw up a number of surprises, from quirky unique gifts, better quality products, and helping to support your immediate community. If you are in Ryde look out for the Small Business flyers in a number of shops, giving you the chance to win a cash prize just for shopping local.
