Not too many scams to warn you about this month although the scammers won’t have taken time off so please be really vigilant with any unsolicited communications. • We have received a report from a resident who received a call from a funeral plan company offering to carry out her funeral much cheaper than her existing plan. She engaged with them initially but then realised that they might not be genuine and on speaking to a local funeral directors she realised that the offer they were making was unrealistic and it was probably an attempt to get her details – a phishing scam. When checking the number they called from online she realised that there were a lot of negative reports about them so instructed her bank not to allow payments to be taken. • We would like to make you aware of a new service recently launched. The scheme is urging people to “stop, hang up and call 159” to check that calls purporting to be from your bank are for real. The idea is to help those who believe they have been contacted by scammers claiming to be their bank, or by fraudsters who encourage them to transfer money. According to Stop Scams UK, criminal gangs stole over £470 million from individuals and small businesses last year by pretending to be a bank or other service provider, encouraging consumers to falsely make a payment or transfer money. When calling 159, you’ll be taken through an option menu in which each bank that has signed up to the service is read aloud. Customers are then able to use their telephone keypad to be put through to their bank. You’ll then be directed through to your bank’s customer service department. Note that calling the service will cost the same as making a national rate call, which means if you’ve got inclusive minutes it’ll be taken from those. For those who bank with firms not TRUSTED CARE IN YOUR OWN HOME yet involved in the 159 pilot – you should Making a difference everyday continue to contact Our services include: your bank by using the number on the back • Companionship • Personal Care • Dementia Care • Medication Support of your debit or credit • Respite Care • Shopping • Meal Preparation • Running Errands card. ith the clocks going back an hour and the night’s drawing in there is no doubt that Autumn is here. For me I try to keep as busy as I would in the Spring and Summer months and if our unpredictable British weather allows, I will continue being outdoors as much as I can, just this time I will be kitted out in a hat, scarf, and gloves. Even a gentle stroll to a local beauty spot with a flask of warming soup (see our recipe on page 6) will do you good. It is important that we look after our mental health as well as our physical health. Around this time of year, I try my hand at a new hobby to keep me busy. The list of crafty and non-crafty hobbies is extensive, and I am hoping to jump on the macrame trend and fill my home with macrame plant hangers. For those of a certain age, you will remember when this was a popular craft first time around and you may even have a plant hanger, wall hanging or even a lampshade from back then!!! Inside this issue you will find news from local councillors, information, editorial, puzzles and adverts from a fantastic range of advertisers offering a variety of services. As always, please use their services and support these local businesses. Our ‘Dates for your Dairy’ section lists a variety of events happening both in your local area and across the island and there should be something for everyone to enjoy. I hope you all have a fantastic November, stay safe and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report from Cllr Phil Jordan - Ryde North West. Tel: 07929 376375 | Email: phil.jordan@iow.gov.uk More great news for Ryde as we learn of the ambitious scheme to restore the old Packs building in Cross Street as a multiuse centre bringing forward great ideas for this building in the centre of Ryde. Shade Makers, who are a world-renowned carnival display and costume organisation, have taken on the project which includes a fully equipped workshop, an events barn, which doubles up as a maker barn for largescale projects and a new cafe, which will boast an outdoor terrace above the barn. There’ll also be a communal studio space, community meeting room and specialist sculpture and photography studios. The Architectural Heritage Fund and Historic England have both granted funding and I understand that the Arts Council are considering a substantial grant fund investment to help get the project delivered. Alongside the work and funding, the High Street Action Zone is investing in Ryde Town centre, and we can see that Ryde really is starting to revive and become a vibrant go-ahead town where seventeen new businesses have opened their doors in the past three months. Work continues to deliver the pedestrianisation of the High Street free from vehicles. It is sadly true that numbers of vehicle drivers are simply ignoring the signs on the entry to the High Street and proceeding through at varying times of the day and night. This is unhelpful and unsafe to people who expect the area to be free of vehicles for most of the day and has led to some near accidents over the recent past. To finally prevent these events, the Town Council is looking to install a barrier at the start of the High Street and is currently getting quotes for the work which we hope to put into place without delay. We hope that this starts to encourage more outside

activity such as cafés and a more general encouragement for people to walk and wander and stay safely around the High Street and the two town squares. The Town Hall working group is stepping up the pace on the Town Hall and a ‘Friends of the Town Hall’ organisation is being created to help and assist with delivery of the project. Alongside a business case which has been prepared by Hampshire Council and funded by Historic England, talks with grant funders is underway and bids are planned to some key funders as the project moves forward. There is much work to do, of course, but we know there is a huge wealth of knowledge and experience in our community and many people have indicated they would like to step up and be involved in bringing this building back into public ownership as a real and vibrant space for wide community mixed use. On a slightly less positive note, we learn from Southern Water that there are new faults being discovered down at Appley where we have had an overground pipe in place for many months as Southern Water investigated the cause and problems at this site to restore an underground solution for the wastewater disposal. The ongoing works are unhelpful to the car parking in Ryde as we have lost the Appley car park capacity with the road closure and restricted access to the road. The works are ongoing, but I am informed that we may be looking to February 2022 for them to be completed insofar as we know what must be done at this stage of the process. We do hope this can be finally brought back to normal service and use before the spring and early visitors to the Island.

News Report for Wootton Bridge from Cllr Daryll Pitcher Tel: 07511 045 145 | daryll@planetmail.net Since my last report a major new outline planning application has been lodged with the Isle of Wight Council. This would entail the demolition of number 69 Station Road and the use of this plot as access for a new development on the field behind. This proposal sparked a lot of interest at the September Parish Council meeting with much being said by both Councillors and members of the public regarding such things as the location of the proposed access and the ecology of the area. This application is primarily seeking permission to use the land at 69 as an access point and as such I believe it would be unsafe, with too little distance between it and the blind bend at the brow of the hill near Gravel Pit Road. The Parish Council subsequently opposed the application.

This would then potentially see fifty lorries making the difficult and often dangerous turn at the lights by the Cedars. Needless to say, I oppose such a route and overall feel that the plan offers no benefit to the village of Wootton Bridge, only disruption, noise, pollution, dust and heavy traffic.

The second major local occurrence was the public meeting to discuss potential gravel extraction at Palmers Farm. A presentation was laid out by Wight Building Materials (WBM) as to what they propose, and a lively debate ensued. The main concern raised by the vast majority of the seventy people present (and privately to me since by many others) is the proposed use of Brocks Copse Road and Alverstone Road as the access way. These roads are very narrow, and Brocks Copse is also a walking and cycling route. The proposal would see fifty lorry movements a day so without significant widening there is no possibility in my mind that this could be safe. A further concern is that upon reaching the Racecourse Roundabout the lorries would turn back towards Wootton Bridge rather than heading towards Newport in order to reach the St. George’s Down base of WBM.

Plans for improvements to the recreation ground were discussed at a recent Facilities Working Group meeting of the Parish Council. A comprehensive wish list was drawn up which includes upgrades to the pathway including completing the final missing section, new public toilets, a wildflower/meadow area, renewing and filling in the shrub border areas, improved signage and long-term investment in play equipment. The Rec is an important amenity for the village, and we must look after it for the benefit of all.

I have met with Cllr. Phil Jordan the Cabinet Member for Transport and have shown him firsthand the condition of New Road. We travelled the length of the road, and I explained the status of the proposed rebuilding of the road and the problems that will be faced locally while the work is being carried out. He is supportive and has promised to support me as I try and bring this long-standing project to completion.

As I write this the IW Council Cabinet is set to make a final decision on Ryde Interchange. I oppose the current plan as I feel it is badly designed and a waste of taxpayers’ money. I fear it could do long term damage to Ryde seafront and to the reputation of this council administration.

November Facts November actually translates into “ninth month” in Latin. It was the ninth month of the year before January and February were added to the Roman Calendar. Despite its change to 11th position, November was never renamed. November begins on the same day of the week as March every year and also February except in leap years. November is the only month used to represent a letter in the phonetic alphabet. November 1st is National Cook for Your Pets Day. (I don’t think I need to add anything more to this) The fifth of November marks the day in 1605, a group of Roman Catholics plotted to blow up Parliament while King James I was inside. Fortunately, the plot was foiled.

The Anglo-Saxons had quite the fitting name for November. It’s usually at this time of the year in the northern hemisphere that cold winds start to chill you to the bone, and as such, they called it “Wind Monath”, or wind month. The November birth flower is the chrysanthemum. One of the world’s most popular cut flowers because of its variety. Available in a huge spectrum of colours these flowers are thought to bring good luck and joy into any home Those born in November can be born under one of two very different star signs. If you’re born before November 23rd then you have the sign of Scorpio. Those born on November 23rd or later have the sign of Sagittarius. Scorpios are said to value trust and honesty above other things, as well as being quite intense yet imaginative people. Those born under the sign of Sagittarius are quite different, being energetic and idealistic, while also generous and open-minded. According to research published in 2008, serial killers are more likely to be born in November than any other month. Happy Birthday to all those celebrating this month.
