Report from IW Councillor for Ryde North East - Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde, PO33 3RP. Tel 07792 670771 E: wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide August started on a warm and sunny note and I hope it continues through to the end of September. Even on over cast days it has been good to see Ryde Town shopping Streets have been busy with visitors.
Tower, shopping centres and attractions etc. I used to nag Hovertravel to have a sandwich board outside the Southsea terminal with a bucket and spade attached to it with a question “what would you do with these in Southsea” answer “take them The beach has been cleaned and well to Ryde Beach”, hovertravel eventually put maintained with visitors enjoying the Solent up a poster depicting a picture of Ryde Beach under the watchful eye of our Waterside Pool in the front of the Southsea terminal (better trained lifeguards. than nothing) but we do need to shout a bit louder about our beautiful Ryde. The Southern Water flood prevention works continue in the Strand and Simeon Street, I also tweet pictures on twitter via my the Eastern end is almost complete and will @RydeAbide site, this is a good forum to be filled in and put right before the works promote our Town and local businesses, commence at the Western end. pleased to see RTC now has a new website and Twitter account. I have asked Southern Water to liaise with IWC parking services to provide emergency As you should know by now Harcourt Sands parking for local residents who cannot access application has been submitted to IWC their drives due to works blocking the way. planning department, I hope its successful It is wrong for displaced residents to receive and we finally get the site cleaned up and PCN’s when they are made to park elsewhere lived in again, was pleased to see the hotel because of blocked access to their own plot still part of the application with a proviso properties, I hope this problem will soon be to keep it as 15 dedicated holiday let’s if the resolved. hotel trade is not interested in buying it. I was disappointed to hear David Thornton say that Visit Isle of Wight do nothing to promote the Island to day trippers , Ryde’s economy depends on them, it always has and even more so since we lost Harcourt Sands holiday camp. I will be raising this issue at the next RTC meeting. RTC are extremely pro active and supportive of the Towns economy, they advertise Ryde via Town Maps, events and on the “On Board TV” screens on Wightlink car ferries and Catamaran service. It would be a good idea to try and market Ryde in Portsmouth and Southsea via
I think RTC and RBA should help market the site to the Hotel trade as it seems inconceivable that no chain would be interested in it. It would be good if the hotel could offer a service to let out peoples houses within the development to holiday makers (if they are second homes) for them if they are empty. Enjoy whats left of the summer holidays, fingers crossed for good weather. Best regards Wayne

Yoga For Wellbeing By Jessica Garbett of Yinspire Yoga Google the word “yoga” and many images appear – one that prevails is someone – normally young and slim – bent into an impossible pretzel shape and set against the sunset on some glamorous beach. The image is unfortunate as it puts many people off exploring this simple practice of wellbeing which is accessible to all, young and old, thin and not so, flexible and not so, male and female, and with glamorous beaches being optional! At its simplest Yoga means “union” and refers to creating a union between our body, mind and higher self. Yoga postures are part of this, along with breathing, mindfulness, mediation and relaxation – a typical Yoga class will encompass elements of all of these. Yoga is an ancient science, tried and tested over many generations. A popular Yoga quote is “Its not about touching your toes; its about what you learn on the way down”; physical fitness, flexibility and suppleness are not prerequisites - although Yoga will slowly help all of these. A smile, a positive outlook, and an enquiring mind are all someone needs to join a class. The takeaway, as well as a physical health gains, should include a more relaxed, calmer and measured outlook on life. The Island is fortunate to have a wide choice of Yoga classes, and there should be something to suit everyone.

News Report from Cllr Ian Stephens - Ryde West - Lantern Cottage, The Orchard, Pellhurst Road, Ryde, PO33 3DU Email:- ian.stephens@iow.gov.uk Mobile:-07970 009523 Island Line - This month has seen concern expressed over Island Line and the rail service from Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin, which has been on the Isle of Wight Council agenda for some time. During my time as Leader I raised the concerns at the Solent Transport Board, especially as Portsmouth City Council were putting forward a transport interchange bid for Portsmouth Hard... without the inclusion of the Harbour Station. I emphasised at that time the importance of the Harbour Station and the WightLink Fast Cat link to Ryde. There appeared to be a reluctance for colleagues from cross Solent Authorities to engage and no interest was expressed., although WightLink always insisted that their service would continue to run. I mention this as it is imperative to the future of Island Line...nobody wants a rail link to nowhere! Island Line transports over a million passengers per year and is part of our transport infrastructure, we need to pull together to keep it at the forefront of our transportation links...I have always done so. I am definitely in favour of the rail service remaining within the franchise (at this moment run by South West Trains). I know that my colleagues within the Independent Administration of the Isle of Wight Council also favour that position. During the Autumn of 2014 Andrew Turner MP stated that there was a need for a Task Group to look at the infrastructure (you may well remember the suggestions of a ‘new cross Solent operation/ service”). The Isle of Wight Council Scrutiny Committee looked into cross Solent Travel, and I signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce so that business and employment was included in any proposal taken forward by the Council to Central Government. 10
The Isle of Wight Council is NOT a Transport Authority ( not to be confused with its role as a Highway Authority), and therefore does not have the funding to support such Task Groups as have been suggested, but have passed a motion to SUPPORT our MP and his team in their endeavours...although as I write there is a Council deputation putting forward our concerns with reference to the future of Island Line. I will continue to fight and support the continuation of this important link...a link which could have a rosy future if more thought were given to provide passenger AND freight links. Allowances for Councillors - I never duck an issue and would just like to touch on a brief concern raised in the media with regard to Special Responsibility Allowances for elected Isle of Wight Councillors...where again this year I have been made the primary example (as Leader I do accept that I was there to be ‘shot’ at). The allowances are defined by an Independent Remuneration Panel (IRP). I took an instant 40+% reduction from my predecessor David Pugh....MY DECISION. The following year the IRP recommended that, due to areas of responsibility and time demanded in my role, that I receive an increase...part of this rationale was that it was unfair if another took over the role. I think that to bring in good Councillors, especially those who are younger we need to take heed that Allowances allied to relevant areas of responsibility will assist as an enabler. Personal and political cheap words will not encourage others to come forward. I see no need for personal attacks or defence as each person will have their view.

Isle of Wight Prostate and Urology Cancer Support The ‘C’ word is the word no one wants to hear and if it doesn’t affect you directly then it may become part of your life through a family member or friend who is going through it as 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1 in 2 men with other cancers in their lifetime. The word Cancer sends shivers down most spines. Such is its intimidating nature, even with the advances medical science has made in successfully dealing with it; it still retains the fear factor. So having people around who are empathic and able to offer real support can be critical. Usually it is one’s partner and family who provide this; however they too may need support and consideration, which can so easily be overlooked Every person deals with it in a different way but it is important to know that there is support and help out there. Back in 2011 the Isle of Wight Prostate and Urology Cancer Support group, an Island based group was started by fellow travellers to the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham for radiotherapy treatment.

Resin Stone Driveways Beautiful Surface Overlays - for your driveway What is a Resin Stone Overlay?
BEFOR
E
Resin Stone Overlaying is effectively surfacing over your existing block-paved, tarmac or concrete driveway, path or patio. Resin Overlays provide a highly cost-effective and quick way of replacing the surface in the Garden or on the Driveway. As well as being aesthetically pleasing and highly durable, the benefits include: Being both solvent and odour free, during and after application - Restricting growth of weeds - Eliminating loose stones Being environmentally friendly - Compliance with Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
How is it done?
We initially prepare the existing surface using a high-pressure jet washer system and primer, before applying your chosen resin stone combination. The overlays typically take 1-2 days with minimal inconvenience.
Finishing
We also offer a range of natural or blended stone and surrounding landscaping options including moon stone to truly personalise your resin installation.
