Dear Readers Welcome to the September issue of Island Magazines. I hope you all had a lovely August and have been taking advantage of the lovely weather we have had. The Island has been soaking up the sunshine and lets hope that it continues well into September and we get to experience an Indian summer. The summer holidays are very nearly over and the children will be back to school very shortly. The holidays makers will soon be returning home and lets hope the roads won’t be quite as congested once they have gone. The biggest event in September may be the Bestival but there are still other events happening across the Island and you can find more details on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 10 and 11. This months issue is once again packed with news, events, advertisers and feature editorials. Please keep using the services of the advertisers and remember to let them know where you saw their advert. I hope you all have a wonderful September and I look forward to catching up with you next month. Debbie

1. Check References. Don’t just take them actually check them as well! 2. Meet The Tenant. A face to face meeting is the best way to start any relationship. 3. Always Use A Contract. This is vital, even if you know Covering the whole of the tenants, always protect yourself with a contract. the Isle of Wight Standard contracts are available and don’t have to be expensive. 4. The chair yoga builds on the existing range of Yin and Restorative focused Hatha Yoga classes offered at Yinspire, by Advanced Yin Yoga Teacher Jessica Garbett. The chair yoga is suitable for all ages, and can cater for most health or age based mobility restrictions, but Jessica advises people to check with her if they have specific concerns. The ethos at Yinspire is to introduce slowness and stillness – Yin – into a busy, stressful and often frenetic world – which is described as Yang. Yin Yoga is a quiet slow practice, which targets Yin energies and tissue in the body, countering the Yang experienced in daily life stresses. As well as the chair yoga there are a selection of other class times available, and private or small group classes can also be booked. Chair Yoga starts on Thursday 15th September 2016, and people can register via www. yinspire.co.uk or by calling 333888 7

Report from IW Councillor for Ryde North East - Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde, PO33 3RP. Tel 07792 670771 E: wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide During a busy July the Ryde, South & Southeast & England in bloom judging took place, I’ve been asked to pass on compliments to Ryde Town Council many times regarding the lovely floral displays around the Town. Let’s hope we get a Gold this year.

The Beach Lifeguards are back and doing a fine Job at Sandy Slip on Ryde Beach, they have already assisted and saved quite a few bathers on sunny days, its a good job Ryde Town Council support this financially along with the Beach cleaning.

There has continued to be a high level of burglaries, break-ins and antisocial behaviour around Ryde, the Police have increased their presence, residents who live around Canoe Lake have requested the mobile CCTV camera in hope that it will capture the late night noisy vehicular racing and activity.

I was pleased to see the ancient (1800’s) pillar that stands at the entrance to Sandy Slip repointed and repaired, this used to be one of two pillars that formed the original gateway to Sandy Slip that was once the only Beach in Ryde when the tide was in, it once had about 20 Bathing Machines along it.

Some residents have also suffered vandalism on their property, I have continued to pass up all incidents reported to me to the Police and I ask everyone to call in on the 101 number at every instance.

I do tweet old photographs of this and Ryde on my twitter account @RydeAbide you can also see them if you Google my name. There’s quite a collection on there of our Town and beaches dating back to the 1800’s.

We need to do this to give the Police a statistic that can force the commissioner to allocate more officers and hours to be allocated to police our sadly suffering district . There has also continued to be many vehicles dumped or left on our residential Streets for months at a time, if you are suffering from this please do email the make, model and registration details to me and I will notify the Police and relevant agencies.

I’ve been doing quite a lot of work within Isle of Wight Council in my roll as Chairman of the Economy & Tourism Select Committee around Devolution (combined Authority), there are a couple of options and info gathering investigations culminated in the Leader of Portsmouth Council (Cllr Donna Jones) attending the Select Committee Meeting on Tuesday 26th July where she gave a presentation and took questions from members. During the meeting she told us she had been talking to Hovertravel about running a second service from Portsmouth to Southampton via Cowes.

I continue to lobby Executive members and officers requesting more resident and time restricted parking for our Ward and hope everyone took the opportunity to feed their local requests and concerned into the online Parking Consultation (it closed on 6th July). We really do need to get this much needed local Parking policy change auctioned, the Council should hopefully want to bring it in as it would inevitably create more parking revenue for them. 14

I would like to remind residents that there is currently a live online Isle of Wight Council Devolution Consultation going on and would suggest everyone make their best efforts to log on and take part in it. Its important that we all understand the implications, pros & cons etc and give our views

News report from Wayne Whittle continued as this is progressing at quite a rate. Ryde Slide day was great fun this year with better warmer weather. Many enjoyed their slide down on the day, we’re still waiting to see how much of the past promised corporate sponsorship comes in before we release the final sum raised for our charities. Even Cllr Henry Adams and the leader of Isle of Wight Council went down for a slide on the day and a good time was had by all. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bestival, HSS, Wightlink, Olivos, Island Roads, Isle Of Wight Council, Hovertravel, Fire Service, Inshore Rescue, Aspire Ryde for their support.
