Where there’s a Will, there is a Way! This month my column is focusing principally on my ward of Appley and Elmfield and hopefully provides an insight into the range of work of an IW and a Ryde Town Councillor. It has been a hot summer with many events in Ryde and August Bank Holiday and September will be the climax of events with Ryde Carnival, Scooter Rally, and the start of the final leg of the cycling race, the Tour to Britain. My ward is the eastern side of Ryde and goes from the Westridge Junction at the South to Appley & Ryde beaches to the North. The route to the Bay area goes through the Ward and this is the route that the cyclists in the Tour de Britain will go as they start their journey around the Island, finishing at the Needles. The whole esplanade area has really come alive this year with Ryde Town Council taking over the Marina from Isle of Wight Council. There is a new office, flags, deckchairs and parasols on the beaches, paddleboards and kayaks for hire in the sea, artists banners on the lampposts, new sand and 1000s of Islanders and tourists enjoying in my view the best beaches on the Island.
St. John’s Park and Wood
News Report from Cllr. Michael Lilley for Ryde Appley and Elmfield 07769 551 578 | www.michaellilley.ukMichael.lilley@iow.gov.uk
To me all greenspace in Appley and Elmfield Ward and Ryde as a whole is very precious and now more so than the historic nature area known as St. John’s Park between East and West Hill. It was bought many years ago by residents, who formed St. John’s Trust to save it from development. I am now working with these residents, University of Portsmouth, Natural Enterprise and Ryde Town Council on a long-term plan to preserve this hidden gem of nature. Ryde Town Council has already agreed and budgeted to purchase the Wood from the resident’s trust to make sure it is preserved for the community.
Over the next 12 months a working group including residents who live near the Park/Wood to develop a sustainable management plan that preserves the nature of the site including the wildlife, plants and Itrees.love this area of Ryde as it has so much history and nature. Hopefully, the action I am taking with others makes sure it is preserved for future generations.
Appley Tower – It has been nearly 5 years since I took action to prevent IW Council from trying to sell the Tower as a luxury beach hut. It has been a long road of consultation, getting funding for feasibility studies, surveys and getting together the plans for repair, refurbishment, sustainability and re-opening. I have worked consistently with local charity Natural Enterprise, IW Council and Ryde Town Council to make sure the Tower is kept in community ownership and brought back to its former glory. It is fantastic that Ryde Town Council has adopted the iconic Tower
as its corporate logo as the Tower is a real symbol of Ryde. I am so excited that the final application for funding has now gone to the Architectural Heritage Fund with funding from Ryde Town and IW Council approving match funding. Planning permission has been granted for the proposed work that is required to make the Tower more accessible and fully repaired. We should know the outcome of the funding bid in October hopefully and the plan is for the work to start at the end of this year and be completed in 2023/4.
We welcome you to come along to a no obligation meeting, to find out more. A warm and friendly welcome is guaranteed. If you would like to talk to someone before coming along, please ring 01983 759350 and we can chat and even meet with you before you come to a guild. We meet monthly and have nine Townswomen’s Guilds at various locations and times across the island
Sandown - Broadway Centre, 3rd Wednesday at 2.00pm
Are you new to the Island, recently retired or just interested in fun, laughter, lunches, walking, outings or something different?
The First Step is the Hardest By Suzie Thurgood Why join TG? Well, I can’t answer for you, but I can tell you why I joined... I had recently retired and moved to the Island and didn’t know a soul. I saw an advert for Townswomen’s Guild and thought I would give it a try. The hardest thing was to walk through the door, but I really had no need to worry as I was immediately approached and introduced to others and the rest is, as they say, history.
So, what else do we do, well ‘Lunchers club’ is a regular at all the guilds, we generally go somewhere different on a monthly basis. Some guilds have walking clubs which involve stopping for coffee, cake and sometimes lunch. Book reading, crafts, flower arranging, gardening, theatre/cinema clubs and we’ve even been known to go on a holiday or two. We regularly have garden parties, coffee mornings and ploughman’s lunches. In fact, a lot of our activities involve some sort of eating or drinking tea!!
The Townswomen’s Guild have made it their mission to reduce loneliness by encouraging women who feel isolated and lonely to get involved with their local guild. By becoming a member, you will discover the true gift of friendship and that being around like-minded individuals will help to combat feelings of isolation and loneliness.
Bembridge - Methodist Church Hall, 1st Tuesday at 7.30pm
There are currently nine guilds on the Island and each one holds a monthly meeting which normally includes a speaker giving us insights into various activities on the island, for example we have had the head gardener from Osborne House and more recently a talk on Film and TV made on the Island. We are a non-religious and non-political guild and are open to like-minded ladies who want to meet new people, have fun, and make new friends.
Then TG could well be for you and is a great opportunity to meet new friends and like-minded ladies in your area.
Sandown - Broadway Centre, 2nd Tuesday at 7.00pm
Newport - Parish Centre, Town Lane, 2nd Monday at 2.00pm
Ventnor - St Catherine’s Church, 3rd Wednesday at 2.15pm
Wootton - Methodist Church, Station Rd, 3rd Thursday at 2.00pm
Freshwater - Methodist Church Hall, 1st Wednesday at 2.00pm
Lake - Lions Community Centre, 2nd Thursday at 10.30am
Walking through those doors was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, there is no age restriction and everybody is welcome. You can find details of the Guild in your area on the above advert, and you can also call us to chat and even meet with you before you come to your first Guild. As I said at the beginning of this article, the hardest part was walking through the door and if you don’t feel confident to do it alone, I will walk with you.
Shanklin - Falcon Cross Hall, 3rd Wednesday at 10.30am
In this issue you will find all the regular news reports, puzzles, dates for your diary, features and much more. For once I am not going to make any comments on the weather... it is what it is, and we just have to take each day as it comes and, on that note, I wish you all a wonderful September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month. Take care and keep safe.

I honestly do not know where this year has gone! If you are a regular reader of this community publication you may remember that the last few years, the September issue front cover has always been dedicated to anything tractor themed. This is partly because I have always had a love of tractors and secondly September is harvesting season and we are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or to the frustration of many but to my delight stuck behind one in traffic. I will be showing my age here, but I remember years ago when I was growing up, I looked forward to helping load the bales on to the trailer which in those times were just held on with a bit of rope and then sitting on the top bouncing about as we went along the road. Back then, health and safety wasn’t an issue and at times there could be a few of us on the top of the stack and if any of the bales did fall on the road, then we just stopped and picked them up. In those days everything was just a bit more laid back. There wouldn’t have been moaning, honking of horns or even road rage when this happened, just acceptance that your journey may be delayed by a few minutes. Imagine how this would be greeted on Coppins Bridge now!!
elderly or ill pet owners worry about their ability to provide appropriate care for their loved pets and rather than them having to rehome what could be their only companion, The Cinnamon Trust with the help of their amazing volunteers can step in and provide the help that is needed, such as walking the dog for a housebound owner, cleaning bird cages and litter trays and even foster pets while owners need hospital or hospice care. The Cinnamon Trust are looking for volunteers to help island pet owners. They cover the whole island and therefore need volunteers from all areas. They currently have pet owners in Newport and Cowes who are in need of immediate help and support for their beloved dogs who love a good walk. By volunteering you will be supporting the dogs by providing regular exercise to keep them in tip top condition and you will also be taking away a worry from the owner who will no doubt have enough on their plate already.
If you would like to have a more in-depth chat about becoming a volunteer, please call them during office hours (Monday-Friday 9am5pm) on 01736 758 701, or you can find more information on their website. Charity No: 1134680.

6 News Report for Wootton Bridge from Cllr Daryll Pitcher Tel: 07511 045 145 | daryll@planetmail.net pace, and I am keen that we continue to keep the channels of communication open. Whatever is done there is bound to be some disruption during the works so I would very much like to be able to inform people of the final plan well in advance so that residents and businesses can make arrangements. The suggestion has been made that the village should have allotments. Given everything that is currently going on globally I am supportive of this suggestion. Food security, food miles, self-sufficiency and the environment would all benefit not to mention the health benefits of the physical activity and fresh produce. I know that the Parish council are investigating the whole issue so if you have any suggestions, comments or questions direct them either to myself or to Finally, them.I would like to welcome Lorna Morey to Wootton Bridge Parish Council as their new Assistant Clerk. Lorna’s appointment was part of an ongoing process of modernisation to allow the Parish Council to do more to support our growing village. You cannot properly tackle bigger and more complex things without the correct infrastructure being in place. This is a trap many Towns and Parishes have fallen into. Lorna’s appointment will in time allow the Parish Office to be open five days a week, so no more wondering whether or not we will be there! Having chaired the appointments committee, I would like to thank all the applicants. It was a tough task to decide due to the quantity and quality of candidates so congratulations to Lorna. As many of you will no doubt be aware there are issues with the new path around the recreation ground. The surface is loose in places (although other areas appear to have settled and compacted) and in addition at one point the path runs too close to the rugby pitches. I have been working with both the Isle of Wight Council and Wootton Bridge Parish Council to resolve these problems. The Parish is investigating what can be done about improving the surface with rolling it again the first option to see if this improves the compaction. IW Council Staff are liaising with the rugby club to resolve the issue with the proximity with the pitch. In general, though the path is an improvement on what was there previously and financially was far cheaper than tarmac which would have been five times the cost. Longer term it may be that the path is upgraded in sections to full tarmac, but we need to do it in a way that doesn’t prohibit the Parish Council from affording any other improvements around the village.
I am still working with both the Isle of Wight Council and Wootton Bridge Parish Council regarding the gate (or lack thereof) on the recreation ground car park. As far as I can see the IW Council has a duty of care particularly as they lease and rent out the sports pitches including to youth groups. The lack of a gate makes the area less safe for children, the infirm and for loose dogs and I want to see action taken to make it secure. I have been holding conversations with residents and the IW Council about moving forward the resurfacing of New Road. Progress has slowed to a snail’s

Ryde Town Council are active and initiative-taking in the town and are discussing ways that different ownership might allow for more local management and potential more local investment with a view to being creative about how the area could be brought back into wider public access and use. Early days but the Isle of Wight council’s financial position is unlikely to change anytime soon and investment in the area is very remote so perhaps another feature in Ryde that the town Council could manage better.
to consultation soon. With ideas and suggestions for the entire Ryde seafront it is ambitious and forward looking to try and bring together a cohesive seafront offer for residents and visitors alike correlating a whole history of developments and buildings resulting from years and years of unconnected activity and well-intended improvements. It is a master plan so the time frames could be generational, but I am pleased we are starting to look at the way we could join up the seafront offer in Ryde with a planned approach over many years. I am sure there is much more to come on this in the coming months and Finallyyears. for this month, Ryde Town Council have held initial talks with the Isle of Wight Council about the future of the canoe lake and surrounding area. The closure of the splash park and lack of investment in the area is starting to show a steady decline with geese taking over the area and creating health and hygiene issues that keep people away from really using and enjoying the whole area.
Vic Gallucci is an interesting man. Vic is the person who brings the Classic Car show to Ryde every year and does so with a small team and with lots of challenging work, energy, and dedication to put on this fantastic event which brings in so many visitors to the town and to the Island more generally. I talk with Vic a lot!
When needed, Ryde Town Council help and assist and we continue to help with some of the infrastructure costs of the event alongside many other stakeholders that contribute. We are incredibly happy and pleased that Vic has chosen Ryde for his event and long may our working relationship continue with the town and Vic. If any of you are reading this before the event on the 3rd and 4th September do take the opportunity to visit and enjoy a completely free day out for all the family with much more than just the wonderful cars to look at, taking place.
The work continues the Interchange and the £10m of grant funding is being spent to make improvements to the transport services at Ryde. The cycle ways and pedestrian routes are nearing completion with work on the pier to start very soon and the station is being refurbished to include public toilets, ticket office, more open space and commercial premises for retail and refreshments.
The project should be complete by March 2023, and I am reliably informed that it is currently on target and due to be finished well in time for the summer season of Just2023.recently, a master plan for Ryde seafront has been drafted and is due out
September Facts and Events
September 2, 1666, was a terrible time for the city of London. A raging fire broke out within the older section of the city, completely destroying all it touched within the ancient Roman walls. What’s most surprising about this tragedy is that there were only 6 recorded Thosedeaths!born
September is graced with having two different birth flowers. The two flowers are the vibrant aster and the beautiful yet resilient morning glory. The significance of both flowers is actually very similar, with the aster being said to represent love, while the morning glory represents affection.
September was originally the seventh month of the ancient Roman calendar, and as such it was named Septem, which translates into “the seventh month”. It wasn’t until 451 BC that the months of January and February were added to the calendar, making September the ninth Septembermonth.heralds the beginning of Autumn in the northern hemisphere, with it officially commencing on the September equinox, which this year will be at 02:03 on Friday 23rd SeptemberSeptember. 1, 1939, was a dark day for the world. It was on this day that Hitler invaded Poland, consequentially beginning World War II.
September 11, 2001, changed the shape of the world forever. It was on this fateful day that the worst terrorist attack on US soil happened when four commercial airliners were hijacked. Two of the planes were flown straight into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre, and another was crashed into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crash-landed into a field in Pennsylvania after the passengers of the flight attempted to regain control of the plane from the terrorists.

September only has one birthstone though, but with a stone like this, who needs another? The stone is the majestically vivid sapphire. With its deep blue tones, this precious stone is said to represent the wisdom of the gods, purity, and trust. Sapphires were once worn to protect the wearer from both poisoning and other evils.
in September are brought into this world under one of two-star signs. If you were born before September 23rd, you’re considered to be a Virgo. If you’re born on the 23rd or later, you’re a Libra. Virgos are said to be analytical and hardworking people, while still being kind and loyal. Libras, on the other hand, value harmony and diplomacy, and are said to be both intelligent and kind.

All you need to access the online resources is your library membership card and a four-digit pin number (if you don’t have a pin ask for it next time you are in the library). All these things are free to use, imagine how much money a year you could save by downloading a newspaper or your favourite magazine! If you are not a regular library user or have never visited us before why not make 2022 the year you come to Ryde Library to find out what we have to offer you. Libraries have been changing and you will be amazed at what else we can offer; we are not just about books.
