To mark the Queens 90th Birthday in April the Children at Broadlea School have been busy drawing pictures to commemorate this special occasion. Below is the winning picture which will be printed onto a mug for each pupil. In next month’s issue we will feature the poems that have been done by the children.

HM Queen Elizabeth’s July 1965 visit to the Island. A fanfare from the silver trumpets of the Royal Hampshire Regiment greeted Queen Elizabeth, when she stepped ashore at Newport Quay to begin a two-day visit to the Isle of Wight in July 1965. The Royal Barge had carried the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh five miles up the Medina river from the Royal Yacht Britannia, moored in Cowes. The Queen, on her fist official visit to the Island was greeted in Newport by Lord Ashburton, Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, and the Mayor of Newport, Alderman A. Drudge. 10

A visit was paid to the Guildhall, and then in a shower of rain they walked without umbrellas to the parish Church. Later in the day at Carisbrooke Castle, the Queen installed Admiral of the Fleet Lord Mountbatten of Burma as Governor, Captain and Steward of the Island. For Lord Mountbatten, who retired that month as Chief of Britain’s Defence staff, it was a proud moment. He has close family connections with the Island. Fifty-two years ago he was a cadet at the Royal Naval College at Osborne House and during the Cowes Regatta week of 1921 he met Edwina Ashley, who was later to become his wife. The queen also visited Osborne House, historic home of Queen Victoria. There in 1938 the Queen paid her only previous visit to the Island. It was a convalescent home for officers. The patients live in what used to be the household wing. Queen Victoria’s apartment and their lovely italian gardens are open to the public. Patients in wheel chairs had a special word from the smiling queen. Wherever she went it was the same story of cheers when her majesty visited Shanklin, greeted by the Mayor of South Wight and escorted onto the lift, journeying to the sea front from where she was driven to Sandown, where there was a parade of carnival queen’s from across the Island.

‘SANDOWN REPORT’, from Heather Humby email heather.humby@sky.com Tel: 402024 COUNCIL CONCERN ON PARKS, AND BEACHES ANOMALIES. Sandown Town Council have been informed that as they are now responsible for maintaining the parks and gardens within Sandown, they can retain any revenue raised, when events are held in parks. As a result, at the February meeting of the Council, I queried as to why the same rules do not apply on the beaches? Currently, Sandown Town Council is now responsible for cleaning the beaches and providing lifeguards, yet do not receive the revenue derived from beach concessionaires. (Recently raised 300% by IWC.) Following discussion, Sandown Town Council agreed to contact IWC, bringing the anomaly to their attention, and requesting an explanation. THE GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEME Isle of Wight Age UK, offer help to people over the age of fifty, who have medical appointments, but cannot access public transport, and have no family or friends to help them. Appointments include Surgeries, Opticians, Chiropractors, etc. A charge of 45p per mile is made, to and fro from the clients home, which is payable to the volunteer driver.

number of public services cut, it is now becoming the community who are having to take on the task of helping to keep our town clean. HAMPSHIRE & ISLE OF WIGHT DEVOLUTION. At the recent meeting of Sandown Forum, a presentation on the progress of the Hant’s and IW Devolution (Southern Powerhouse) bid, was made by Mr Ron Anderson, who had been selected by You Gov, as a representative for the Assembly South discussions, one of thirty lay people selected to represent the public, alongside the Council’s, and other public services. As many residents have expressed a wish to have more information on the proposed ‘devolution’ I felt it would be helpful to give some details of the presentation, and I thank Jean Orman, Secretary of Sandown Forum, for taking notes of some of the points made by Mr Anderson.

The process began with an outline bid, being made to the government, for more powers to be given to Council’s to run and organise services within their own ‘patches’. The outline bid has now been approved, and the process must now be negotiated and agreed by all interested parties, in line with conditions laid down by government. The service depends on volunteer availability, Basically the finance to run the new organisation will come from all business and 48 hours of notice is required. rates being retained by authorities, … and this will not be good news for the Island, and SANDOWN GREEN TOWNS INITIATIVES. could mean less actual cash in the budget Congratulations to Sandown Green Town than at present, with no additional funding Initiative, and members of the public who from Central Government. turned out for a recent litter pickup in Sandown. With the ever increasing 12

‘SANDOWN REPORT’, from Heather Humby continued This is a major area under negotiation, and it is hoped to resolve the problem by the wealthier areas agreeing to the redistribution of the money made available to them. The four main conditions are: 1). Closer co-operation of health and social services. 2). More powers over planning needs and issues. 3). A South East Plan involving housing. 4)

An integrated Transport System.

The structure of the Organisation will be a Combined Council, with representatives from all local councils, and other public bodies, who will select a Leader, who will then choose the Executive Committee. A Scrutiny Committee, made up of representatives from various bodies will oversee correct procedures are followed. Once agreement has been made, there must be proper involvement of the public, before anything is finalised. It is hoped that the outcome of negotiations will soon be announced.

whom remembered Chris as a friendly, helpful policeman, who had served Sandown as it’s local policeman over many years. The large gathering at his funeral, demonstrated his popularity, and was attended by family, police colleagues, and his many friends. WALKING MY DOG. Since acquiring Charlie, my two year old Dachshund, I have made many new friends of fellow ‘dogwalkers’ mainly met on Sandown beach. I had no idea just how intrepid these walkers are, turning out in the foulest of weather. When I commenced my beach walking, I soon realised that just to put on a collar and leash, is ow not enough, attiring your dog in a funky coat is now almost mandatory, indeed the daily walk has become a fashion parade! Sadly, our time on the beach will soon come to an end, as dog’s are banned on my particular beach during the summer months, so it will be sad farewell until we all meet up again in October. Please note, Charlie still refuses to join the fashion parade!

SATURDAY MORNING SURGERY. I continue to be available at Sandown Following his address, Mr Anderson answered Library, to endeavour to answer any council questions from those present, and then related queries or problems, from 11am offered to attend any group that might wish until noon him to give a presentation . We have a special front cover this month and the star of it is Rookley and his mum Toggie. This little dancing, prancing kid is part of the 50 strong herd of Isle of Wight Dairy Goats, who reside at and belong to The Green Barn. The herd isn’t complete yet as at the time of writing this there are still a couple of mums waiting to deliver. They are the only commercial dairy goat farm on the Island and these little beauties are responsible for producing the freshest and tastiest goats cheese, milk and fudge on the Island. The Green Barn Isle of Wight Dairy Goats is open to the public and you too can come and see the goats with the kids. The day we went to visit we were lucky enough to have cuddles with some newborns and they are just the cutest. Obviously Rookley wanted to show us how entertaining he could be and was doing some leaps, jumps and generally playing around in his paddock much to amusement of us all. You can easily while away an hour or more just watching these fascinating animals. Whilst visiting the goats you can also visit their onsite farm shop for some wonderful hand crafted gifts as well as the delectable delights of fudge, cheese and milk. They are situated on the Main Road, Bouldnor, PO41 0XN and are open every day.

The Importance of Colour as We Grow Older With older age comes a greater likelihood of eyesight conditions, as well as being on medication, having a form of dementia, and perhaps all of these things combined. What the eye sees, the brain must interpret, and this can vary given different circumstances, type and progression of dementia, and abilities. Understanding that an older person with or without dementia will probably perceive their surroundings differently, is a good starting point for the design of living environments. Good design can help enormously in making it easier to interpret and navigate a building in safety, and the use of colour and contrast can be used in different ways to assist in this.

Contrast is the key to vision.

Blue – restful and has a calming effect, a popular choice for sitting areas and bedrooms

High contrast - When we want to draw attention to something important, greater contrast helps to highlight it. For example, a coloured and contrasting toilet seat helps with positioning; stairs can be made safer with a contrasting strip along the front edge; grab rails can be located; the outlines of furniture can be seen more clearly

Green – the most restful colour, also a popular choice for sitting areas and bedrooms, plus waiting rooms and clinical areas to help reduce stress Red – increases brain wave activity, can stimulate the appetite and produce adrenalin. It is frequently specified in dining areas but dementia patients can have problems seeing the red end of the colour spectrum Orange – this warm colour has a similar effect to red

If there is no contrast, objects cannot easily be seen and differentiated. Contrast is vital in being able to comprehend the environment and understand the features and elements that we need to use in our ordinary daily lives. As we age we lose the ability to differentiate colours clearly, our perception of depth diminishes, there is a loss of visual acuity, we have less spatial awareness and our sensitivity to contrast lowers. Without good contrasts, the world becomes more hazy, we struggle more and more to make sense of it and we function in life with less confidence.

Low contrast - The opposite effect can be achieved by lowering the contrast. e.g. a white door on a white wall. This is also a useful way of making floorings safer, by keeping to a single colour over different floor finishes, or making changes in the floor colour gradually rather than suddenly. It is the sudden contrast which can make the floor levels look uneven, like a step, and this can cause hesitation and unsteadiness which can lead to falls.

Violet – this combination of colours from opposite ends of the light spectrum does not appear to have a consistent effect on mood A large or busy pattern can confuse the eye, and again cause hesitation if it looks like an obstacle or a hole. Shiny finishes can look Yellow – a stimulating colour, ideal for activity areas, can make small rooms appear unsafe, so a matte flooring is preferable and people can walk more safely. larger.
