Dear Readers Welcome to the April issue and I can’t quite believe where this last month has gone! Signs of Spring are popping up everywhere, with bursts of colour from daffodils, crocuses and spring flowers on hedges and banks all around the Island. The Island is coming alive again and many tourist attractions will be opening their doors as the Easter seasons begins. There are a variety of events happening across the Island during April, and you will find details of these on pages 18 and 19. As the weather is getting warmer and whilst many people are taking this opportunity to sit and relax in the sun please can I urge you to read the article on page 14 to ensure you stay in the best of health. I hope you enjoy this months issue which is packed with news and information and I look forward to catching up with you next month and I hope you all have a Happy Easter.

Debbie Although Island Magazines has no political agenda, space was made available for all candidates standing in the upcoming election (should they wish to) to advertise their campaigns but in no way do they reflect the opinions of Island Magazines.

Lower back pain is one of the commonest ailments in the UK, accounting for many days off work – and our modern head forward slumped lifestyles looking at screens, tablets and phones, lolling on sofas, or peering over our car bonnets don’t help this. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence has been investigating back pain recently, and arrived at the conclusion that in many cases pain killers aren’t effective. What do they think is the most effective treatment? In their words, “stretching, strengthening, aerobics or yoga”

Chartered Certified Accountants www.whitefieldtax.co.uk - 614108 2 New Road – Brading – PO36 0DT

It goes without saying that any sudden onset back pain should be checked by a medical professional as there could be a myriad of causes, but in many cases Yoga, Pilates or similar is likely to be a help not a hindrance. In the case of yoga, its not only the movement aspects that help, but relaxation and mindfulness practices, along with breathing exercises assist in managing these conditions. Heather Humby

Working for Sandown Once again I ask for your support for re-election to Sandown Town Council on 4th May. Over past years I have been proud to represent our town, and remain an active member of many local organisations, believing it is important that elected members should be involved in their community. If elected, I will continue to make myself available to Sandown residents, on Saturday's at Sandown Library from 11am until noon, to help with any council related problems, and also seek opinions on local issues. Over the past year, extra services have been thrust upon Sandown Town Council, many tourist related, the costs of which were once fairly shared by all Island taxpayers, but have become now the responsibility of Sandown tax payers. I therefore believe it is essential that Sandown has a strong independent, non political Town Council, able to confront the many hard decisions that will have to be faced over the next four years. Sandown is a great place to live, with a caring community, so it is important that we do all we can to preserve all that is best in our town for future generations, but when necessary, accept changes.

I hope you will consider giving me your vote on May 4th Resident Testimonial Why I think Heather makes a good Councillor by Jean Orma (Resident of Sandown North) I have always believed that anyone offering themselves for election to represent Sandown, should be actively involved within the community. Only then can they know and understand the aspirations and hopes of the people they hope to serve. Heather has always worked incredibly hard in her role as Town Councillor, and in 2014 was awarded the MBE in recognition of her service to the Community over many years. Heather is currently President of the Carnival Association, Sandown Shanklin Town Band and Sandown Football Club, and is also Co Ordinator of The Sandown Forum, Secretary of First Act, and a member of Sandown Community Partnership, and an honorary life member of Yaverland Residents Association. Promoted by Heather Humby, 7 Pier Street, Sandown, IW.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk NO INCREASE IN PARISH PRECEPT Shanklin Town Council have been able to maintain and invest in services for 2017/18 without any increase in the parish precept. Included in this year’s Budget, as supported in the Public Meeting at the Theatre in December, is funding for Grass Cutting and Grounds Maintenance; significant investment in decorative lighting; support to Town Improvements (such as the Town Clock); continued provision of School Crossing Patrol; support of beach safety; support of seasonal programme (Carnival, Regatta, Band Concerts, etc); provision of environmental enforcement (eg to help address fly-tipping and dog-fouling concerns); and other projects. The on-going investment in all 6 of Shanklin’s Public Toilets will see a programme of deep-cleans, alongside the major renovation of Tower Cottage and Falcon Cross Toilets – which will also see the introduction of income generating opportunities as suggested at the public meeting: this investment follows the savings achieved in the first year of the Town Council’s management and ownership of these much needed public amenities. We also have increased funding for Shanklin Community Library, match funding several initiatives, and we would again thank all the volunteers involved in the Library – help running clubs, fundraising (eg Book Bingo), quiz nights at the Youth Club, and countless other efforts – as without Maria and the Team the Town would not have the resource that it has. 12

There is also continued funding (which was under budget) for hanging baskets, floral displays, and a range of tourist related projects – which helped secure the Town South East England In Bloom success in 2016 and a Green Flag Award. SHANKLIN LIFT Work has commenced on the permanent replacement of the Lift Bridge, at a total cost of almost £1 million, ensuring the long-term provision of this much needed facility which is used by over 80,000 users a year, and generating significant surpluses for the Local Authority. Council Officers are completing final arrangements for the re-opening of both lifts, and details will be included in future reports. This investment supports the initial regeneration plans for the Spa Site, and work is in hand with the IW Council Regeneration Director and Chamber of Commerce to take this forward as a priority. We are also actively involved with a research project addressing coastal protection issues in the Bay, recognising the need to prevent erosion of our cliffs, reduction of sand levels, and ensuring a longer term vision that protects the revetment and esplanade for future generations. IW COUNCIL BUDGET During the recent debates on the IW Council Budget, we actively campaigned, with Town Council colleagues, to prevent the introduction of parking meters and charges on Regent Street; to continue travel support for cancer care patients needing Cross Solent

Fake it - don’t bake it! Cancer... it’s a devastating disease and can attack anyone and skin cancer alone comes in many forms and some people don’t realise that Melanoma is the most aggressive and deadliest. You see a mole that may have changed colour or size, and you get it checked out and they remove it, and if you are very lucky this might be the end of your cancer story but for many this is just the beginning. Local business owner, partner, mum, daughter and friend, Debbie Keynes first noticed a lump on her head and her nurse’s intuition kicked in and she sought medical help and was told that she must do an agonising 4 week wait to see if any changes occurred. Nothing good came from waiting and after lots of tests, biopsies and anxious waiting Debbie was diagnosed with Melanoma. She has now undergone surgery to remove the cancer along with 37 lymph nodes, Debbie’s head and neck resembles a patchwork quilt boasting a total of 56 stitches. She is a constant visitor to the hospital, racking up well over 20 appointments. Her long brunette hair hides the bald patch that will always be a constant reminder of what she has fought and what she will continue to fight every day of her life. Debbie has recently had another CT scan and the Melanoma has spread and she is now receiving immunotherapy every 3 weeks at Southampton General – so her battle is still very real but she is continuing to fight it... 14

Debbie knew that pushing her doctor and specialists to ensure she got the diagnosis as fast as she could would greatly increase her chances and she insists that anybody who has a lump, changes in a mole or anything which could be a trigger to seek medical advice immediately and not to ignore it. International Health organisations agree that sun exposure and sun beds are the main causes of skin cancers. The recent increase in the number of people taking last minute cheap holidays abroad may contribute to the rising number of melanoma cases. People who receive the highest exposures to the sun have about 20-35% higher risks of melanoma, but sun burn at any age doubles the risk of malignant melanoma. Help yourself by using lots of sun cream, staying in the shade and wearing a hat. Remember the sun is at its deadliest between 11am and 3pm. Debbie is in a support group and she has watched fellow sufferers lose the battle and some of these people have been in their 20’s and 30’s so its not a mature persons disease – cancer has no age limit. Her business DSK Training is an Island based company which specialises in health and social care training and Debbie has taken on a challenge to educate as many people as possible to bring awareness to this deadly disease and is offering training courses to businesses and groups, especially hairdressers and beauticians who may see the signs before anyone else. The profit from these courses will go directly to Melanoma UK. For more information and contact details go to www.dsktraining.co.uk

Sandown Report from Heather Humby - Telephone 01983 402024 Email heather.humby@sky.com 7, Pier Street, Sandown, PO36 8JR STREET ART - Congratulation to Sandown Business Association, who arranged for local artist Tony Trowbridge to paint a mural on the dilapidated former Kebab Cafe, on the junction of York Road and High Street. It has certainly cheered up a dismal corner of the town, and shows how other neglected buildings could be camouflaged. BROADWAY COMMUNITY CENTRE - Sandown Town Council have agreed to demolish the Broadway Centre and to build a new Community Centre at an estimated cost of £600.000, on part of the existing site. I voted against the proposal, believing there should have been a town meeting held to ascertain the feelings of tax payers, or at least left until after the forthcoming election in May, which would have enabled all prospective councillors to put forward their view on the need for a new Community Centre, and allowed the electorate to vote accordingly. LEARNING LINKS - Workshops are available to those over the age of 50, to enable them to get started or enhance their IT skills, including the internet, social media, and email. Learn how to stay safe online and become familiar with programs like Microsoft Word. For more information please contact Louise or Pat on 01983 527529. GREEN TOWN INITIATIVE - More volunteers are badly needed, for the various tasks that are carried out throughout the town, which include weeding, planting and litter picking, all of which help to beautify our town. Many volunteers just litter pick within their own road. If you feel you are able help, please contact me on 402024. 16

SANDOWN TOWN HALL - The Central Eltham Youth Project that operates Sandown Youth Club, has agreed to a one year lease to take it forward to negotiating a longer lease. SANDOWN SCHOOL’S GRANTS - At the recent meeting of Sandown Forum. Cllr. Ward said he was pleased to report that no Sandown School’s would not be losing money, under the governments recent format. It was also reported that the number claiming school meals has dropped. THE BAY PRIMARY SCHOOL’S COMMUNITY KID’S - The Bay School Community Kid’s, an after school club, along with other primary schools in the South/ South West Railway and Community Partnership, entered a competition to design a poster for use by the partnership. The winning poster was submitted by Bethan March, of The Bay Primary School, who won £100, and her poster will be displayed throughout the regions covered by the partnership. Free rail tickets were also awarded to the school, and it is hoped to use them to visit the Houses of Parliament. The Bay Community kids are also currently planting bulbs at The Briars Residential Home, and also tending the planters and hanging baskets at Sandown Railway Station. I am sure all Sandonian’s appreciate the excellent community work undertaken by the young pupils of the school. IW ATHLETIC CLUB - A new nine week training course will commence on 3rd April, held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at

Sandown Report from Heather Humby continued South Wight Sports Centre. The course is called ‘Couch to 5k’ and is for those who want to improve their fitness. Further details can be obtained from Ray Scovell. South Wight Sports Centre.

CHARLIE - Regretfully, my dog Charlie and I are coming to the end of our walks along the beach at Sandown, and we will miss all our fellow dog walkers until we meet up again in October.

SANDOWN CARNIVAL CHARITY SHOP - Volunteers are needed to operate the charity shop, used to raise funds for the Carnivals. If you have any spare time, please contact me on 402024, and I will pass your name on to the organiser.

SANDOWN LIBRARY SURGERY - May I remind you that I am available most Saturdays at Sandown Library from 11am until noon, to endeavour to help residents with any council related queries or problems.

SOUTH WIGHT SPORTS CENTRE. - The Sports Centre will be taken over in 2018 from Isle of Wight Council by the company that runs Sandown Academy. No specific details as to how this will affect those using the facilities outside of school hours have yet been received, but it is hoped they will still be available for community use. BEACH LEVELS - Sandown Town Council have expressed concern over the changing beach levels in Sandown Bay. It is felt that dredging in the bay is the main cause, but this has been denied as being the reason. The council are to seek further advice. OPTIO - Across the Island there is a network of volunteer drivers, who give their time freely, using their own cars to provide a door to door service for members to attend hospital visits / appointments, and Day Centres and Social Trips.. There is an annual membership of £30, or £45 for a household couple. A mileage charge of 45p per mile is made and there is a minimum charge of £3 per trip. (six miles). Island Conservatives

A Strong Conservative Team Working for Sandown

Raj Patel

On the 4th May 2017 residents of Sandown will have the chance to elect a strong team of two Conservative Councillors, who together with their colleagues on the IW Council and our MP, can really make a difference to the future of Sandown. For many years, Sandown, has been represented by councillors belonging to different political groupings which has sadly weakened Sandown’s’ case when it came the allocation of resources and funding. The election on 4th May is your opportunity to elect Conservative councillors speaking with a strong combined voice to ensure that Sandown gets its fair share of resources. Only we Conservatives have a realistic chance of getting two councillors into County Hall to fight for Sandown. Don’t let the historical mistakes of the past hold Sandown back in the future. We all know that Sandown needs regeneration and the only way we can achieve that is through business investment. Business investors have bypassed Sandown in the past because of the negative messages in the press and media. Cllr Ian Ward has worked hard with the business investors to encourage them to see the opportunities and positive aspects of Sandown and he has negotiated with officials in County Hall to support such investment opportunities. As a businessman and town councillor, Raj Patel understands the problems and difficulties faced by our Sandown businesses and his experience will be invaluable in County Hall. Raj Patel supports many local organisations and is a Trustee for the Roman Villa. Raj already works for many residents who contact him for help

Please Vote For Ian Ward & Raj Patel on 4th May To Get A Strong Conservative TEAM Onto The Isle Of Wight Council Island Conservatives

Fakeaways are the New Takeaways We are all beginning to understand the importance of healthy eating and this doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite indian takeaway - instead you need a fakeaway... why should you miss out on a little of what you fancy. The advantages are you can make them healthier and they are good for the wallet. This month I have called upon the experts and below you will find a mouthwatering curry recipe from Four Seasons Cookery Academy. Turkey Korma© 2 Turkey Breast Steaks cut into cubes 1 Onion – diced Good Squeeze Garlic Puree/4 cloves fresh Garlic finely chopped 1 large Tablespoons Korma Spice Blend 1 Chicken Stock Cube – preferably low salt - (crumbled) 1 handful dessicated Coconut www.cookeryacademy.co.uk 1 small Tub Half-fat Crème Fraiche 1 Red Apple – cored – cut into wedges and then halved – (peel on) Gently fry the Onions and Garlic in a smidge of Olive Oil until Onions are soft. Add Korma Spice and cook gently for a couple of minutes. *Always cook spices early on in the dish to allow flavours to develop*. Add Turkey and cook until browned (approx 8 minutes). Keep stirring so that it doesn’t stick to the pan If it starts to stick, add a little of the Crème Fraiche to avoid adding more oil. Add the Apples, Stock Cube and Creamed Coconut and cook gently for approximately 5 – 10 minutes until Apples have slightly softened. Remove pan from the heat and stir through the Crème Fraiche. Re-heat gently and serve with Wholegrain Rice. Curries are always thought of as being ‘fattening foods’ and indeed they can be. But by reducing the fat content in this dish by using Olive Oil – Monosaturate - and only a little at that and using Turkey which is one of the healthiest meats available – and less expensive than Chicken. We have used a low fat version of Crème Fraiche to add at the end instead of Cream and we’ve also added Apples and Onions in the recipe as well as part of our Slate Stone Porcelain FIVE A DAY. Instead of accompanying the Curry with fat laden Naan bread, try brushing Walls Floors Repairs a Wholemeal Pitta Bread with a little Garlic Olive Oil and placing in a hot oven for a few minutes. No job too big or too small

Recycling is on the move! With spring now here, the council’s mobile household recycling centre, (mobile HRC) has been out in the community making regular visits across the Island. The facility, provided by the council, in partnership with Amey, comes in handy when having a spring clear-out of household recyclables. The mobile HRC provides a facility that reaches out into the community to help people recycle more. It will accept items such as household batteries or small electrical appliances, that can’t be collected as part of a normal household recycling collection and would normally have to be taken by residents to Lynnbottom, Newport and Afton Marsh, Freshwater household and waste recycling centres. Each area the mobile HRC is due to visit is close to public transport links. The mobile HRC will not accept commercial waste, garden green waste or non-recyclable waste and will be open from 10am to 2pm each day at each area. (see April timetable listed below)
