At times there seems to be more ‘month’ left than money. Here are a few recipe ideas (from your store cupboard) that may help you to stretch the gap!

CHICKPEA PANCAKES 1 tin chickpeas - rinse well through strainer and drain 1 egg - little milk. Blend the chickpeas then add the egg and milk to make a batter consistency. Welcome to the August issue and there is no denying that summer is here! Whilst writing this we are in the middle of an amber weather warning for the extreme high temperatures the island is experiencing... like many others I am finding it quite unbearable, but it could be worse - we could be in a built-up city, hours away from the beach and ocean.

This month is set to be a great month • on the Island, as after being absent for a couple of years due to the pandemic we 01983 404 720 can finally say that August is once again 07850 489 754 Carnival time... Our dates for your diary www.adriankensit.co.uk section on page 14 is a handy guide to adrian.kensit@btinternet.com know what’s on and when, ensuring you don’t miss any of the fun or if carnivals just aren’t your thing, you’ll know which areas to avoid and when!!! This month’s issue is once again packed with news, information, local advertising, puzzles and much more. I need to stop looking at this month’s front cover as the temptation to get up and leave the office in search of a 99 with an extra flake is very strong. I have certainly eaten more than my fair share of ice cream during this hot spell, but I believe that by eating them I am supporting local businesses... well that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Please keep using the services of local advertisers who advertise with us, and I hope you all have a lovely August, and, on that note, I am off to get an ice cream! See you again next month.

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 Facebook: Cllr Ian Ward BEM – Sandown South THE OCEAN HOTEL – THE COURTS SUPPORT THE IW COUNCIL & SANDOWN RESIDENTS - I recently attended Court with IW Council Officers for a hearing about the Appeal put forward by the owners of the Ocean Hotel. They submitted their appeal to stop having to carry out work ordered by the Sec 215 order telling them to clear up the site. Yet again, nobody attended to represent the owners. After a short debate, the Judges decided to dismiss the owners appeal against the Sec 215, so legally the work ordered must now be completed. I did ask the Council Officers what happens if the owners still don’t carry out the work? They assured me that there is a plan for additional action should they fail to comply. Unfortunately, the time allocated to the owners to carry out the work still applies, which was 4 months in total. GOOD NEWS! -THE HIGH STREET TASK FORCE IS COMING TO SANDOWN The IW Council has nominated Sandown to receive the help of the High Streets Task Force (HSTF). The HSTF is an alliance of place making experts, sponsored by the Government to help redefine the high street. It provides guidance, tools, and skills to help communities, partnerships, and local government to transform their high streets. We expect to have our first meeting with the team shortly. POLICE TACKLE CRIMINAL BEHAVIOUR AT THE OLD SANDOWN TOWN HALL - I frequently receive reports from residents who live near the old town hall in Grafton Street about anti-social behaviour and more serious offences that regularly take place in the alleyway alongside the town hall. I have reported this to our local police and discussed with them the timing and frequency of these offences. I am pleased to report that the police have committed to conducting more and regular patrols in the area. IT’S SUMMER AND THE IRRESPONSIBLE JET SKIERS ARE BACK - As we feared, a minority of Jet Skiers have been behaving irresponsibly off our beach again this Summer. I have discussed what action could be taken with the Head of the Hampshire Maritime Unit and his advice and preference is for everybody to report any incidents on-line via the Hampshire Police Website. If you cannot do that then telephone 101 or 999 if the situation is particularly dangerous.

News report from Chris Quirk & Michael Beston IOW & Shanklin Town Councillors. christopher.quirk@iow.gov.uk or michael.beston@iow.gov.uk Chris 07802 705831 and Michael 07885 644426 The Queens’s Green Canopy On Wednesday 13th July, we were both delighted to attend this tree planting event as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The 1st Shanklin Scout Group led by Mrs Carol Harvey, ceremonially planted three Oak tree saplings within the grounds of the Big Mead Park in Shanklin. The saplings had been donated to the Scout Group by Shanklin Town Council. Each tree sapling has its own individually engraved plaque dedicated to the 1st Shanklin Scout Troop, 1st Shanklin Cub Scouts and the 1st Shanklin Beaver Scouts. Coastal Defence Scheme Update The Shanklin Coastal Defence scheme is seeking to create a sustainable future for Shanklin Esplanade that current and new generations can enjoy. The coastal defences fronting the Esplanade are ageing, with some sections reaching the end of their useful life. If no action is taken to address this, the defences will become increasingly susceptible to coastal erosion. Within the next 30 years this would likely result in significant damage to the Esplanade, the services contained within it, and make access to Esplanade properties difficult. The Environment Agency (EA), in partnership with the IW Council, is planning to refurbish existing coastal defences to reduce the impact of coastal erosion along Shanklin Esplanade. The EA will be collecting data so that they can better understand the current risk from the erosion and flooding from the

sea. This will assist when making decisions about how best to manage it now and in the future. There are 4 key pieces of survey work that the EA have, or will be undertaking this year: 1. A detailed visual survey of the existing sea wall and groynes (completed in February 2022). 2. A topographic survey to obtain accurate land level measurements (completed in May 2022). 3. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to survey beneath the surface of the existing seawall (completed in July 2022). 4. Detailed ground investigations to confirm ground conditions and how the existing sea defences have been constructed. This is scheduled to begin in September 2022. The EA have a shortlist of options which will be refined based on investigations over the coming months. The EA will be seeking your views on these options in Spring 2023. There will be various opportunities to view, comment and input your thoughts and suggestions. The EA are also exploring funding options for later stages of the project. For More Information please visit: consult. environment-agency.gov.uk/solent-and-southdowns/shanklin-coastal-defence-schemeinformati/ for updates and to complete the public questionnaire. If you would like to sign up to the EA distribution list and receive project updates via email, please contact the following email address: IOW_FDschemes@ Environment-Agency.gov.uk

The iWatchWildlife Project is all about encouraging and supporting the recording and sharing of nature observations on the Isle of Wight. We then convert your sightings into records which help boost the IW Species Garden Tiger Moth Records Database. Each month we highlight a species which we’d like to find out more on how it’s doing locally. During August we are featuring Tiger Moths – there are several Tiger Moth species in the UK, all are stunning with bright colours or patterns, but the most common garden species are the Jersey Tiger Moth and Garden Tiger Moth.

August Facts and Historial Events On the 6th August 1762, the first-ever sandwich was created. It was named after the Earl of Sandwich when he requested a dish involving meat between two pieces of bread. As the story goes, he requested it as he was in the middle of a gambling game and didn’t want to interrupt it.

different though, as it is a sign of imagination, eternal sleep, and oblivion!

August was a big month for the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. It was on the 28th August 1963, that Martin Luther King Jr gave his famous “I have a dream” speech to 250,000 people on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Considered to be one of the most iconic speeches in the history of the US, King’s speech called for the end of racial discrimination and for equal rights to all.

There are of course many incredibly famous and important people who have been born in August including Usain Bolt, Madonna, Sean Connery, Barack Obama, Whitney Houston and although not famous, I myself (Debbie).

Unlike most other months, August has just one birthstone – peridot. One of the lesser-known gems, peridots come in shades from grassgreen to a more earthy olive hue. Shanklin Town Mayor Report by Cllr Chris Quirk Big Mead Pond - Following the relocation of over 150 carp from the pond to a nearby pond on the same water course the Big Mead Pond has been fully drained, and the significant build-up of silt will be dredged out in a project funded jointly by the Isle of Wight Council and Shanklin Town Council. The historic water supply to the pond included a long run from the natural springs feeding the pond and these had been damaged and blocked by tree roots, which have now been removed, A second spring has been identified and will also be linked to the feeder to the pond, which should ensure that the pond has an ongoing water flow throughout the year. Once the pond has been dredged the water supply will be diverted back into the pond and once settled the carp will be returned to the pond. You may see the addition of a bluish dye to the pond, this is totally harmless but stops algal overgrowth and maintains water quality. Island Line - The £26million Island Line upgrade by South Western Railway is now complete and successes in boosting sustainability and biodiversity have led to the award of a top environmental rating. Under the World-leading sustainability assessment and rating scheme, CEEQUAL Island Line was awarded a ‘Good’ rating, demonstrating that sustainable development was considered and implemented throughout the project.
