Cat Sitter Home Visits Allowing your feline friends to remain in their usual environment while you are away is very important to cats. Territory is crucial and being removed from that territory can be very stressful. Island Feline Services is a local cat sitting organisation run by Sarah-Jane Hayns. She offers care tailored to each cat’s individual character and needs in the comfort of their own home. Sarah-Jane started this service 10 years ago and since that time it has grown from strength to strength. Sarah-Jane has recently returned ‘home’ and has set the service up on the island. Island Feline Services offer 30-minute visits to your house and provide affection, play, feeding, basic grooming and litter tray cleaning. They can also give medication, including insulin injections for diabetic cats. Not only is it great, professional care for your cat they also offer peace of mind that your home is in good hands. They can check on security, turn lights on/off, open/close curtains, water plants and put rubbish bins in/out for collection. There is no mistaking that Sarah-Jane is a lifelong cat-lover, she is fully insured, DBSchecked and has worked in veterinary nursing. She is looking forward to continuing this well-established service and getting to know many of the cats on the island! elcome and can you believe this is the December issue and Christmas is very nearly upon us.
I can feel the excitement in the air in the build up to the big day and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section is brimming with events happening both locally and across the island. There is a Christmas Fayre or event for everyone, whether you’re a Christmas fanatic or best friends with the Grinch! Although we still have a long road ahead of us regarding Covid, at least we are in a better place than we were this time last year and we can get to spend time with family and friends over the festive period. December is the start of winter and I remember back when we had that week-long heat wave in summer, I was wishing for the colder weather... as they say, be careful what you wish for!! With the weather set to turn cold please remember to check on others, especially if you have elderly neighbours or anyone on their own. Winter is a lonely time for many and just 30 minutes of company can be the difference between a good day and a bad day. On another note... who spotted the typo in last month’s sudoku puzzle? Thanks to Nathan for letting me know and my apologies to everyone for this oversight and I hope it didn’t puzzle you too much. I hope you all have a great December and I wish you A Very Merry Christmas and I look forward to catching up with you again in the New Year.

News report from Chris Quirk & Michael Beston IOW & Shanklin Town Councillors. christopher.quirk@iow.gov.uk or michael.beston@iow.gov.uk Chris 07802 705831 and Michael 07885 644426 The Return of Island Line - The Isle of Wight’s train service; Island Line returned to service on the 1st November. KILF – the ‘Keep Island Line in the Franchise’ campaign – was formed six years ago when the route was under threat of being taken out of the wider regional franchise. Having campaigned since then to successfully save the route, we were of course delighted to finally board the service on the new trains at 5:35am out of Ryde St Johns station to Ryde Pier Head. We then continued on the line for the first full journey through to Shanklin. The journey was not only much smoother, but the carriages are smart, modern and welcoming - along with the staff (as they have always been!). We both look forward to seeing many people arrive in our town over the months and years ahead. Shanklin Performing Arts Centre Update The new sprung flooring system has been delivered and the installation is now complete. Our thanks go to ‘Men in Sheds’ for bricking up and repairing the unsightly holes in the walls, thanks also to our willing volunteers for repainting the interior walls of the centre, this has really freshened the place up. Shanklin Green Town Group has also planted a lovely selection of evergreen shrubs and a Japanese cedar ‘Sekkan-sugi’ tree in the front garden. A new internal
wall mirror system has been placed on order for our dancers; the mirror provides immediate visual feedback. Enquiries for use of the centre can be made by contacting: 01983 716550 or via the website: www.shanklinperformingartscentre.co.uk Gritting the Island Roads - The Island Roads annual vehicle checks, and safety briefings have already taken place as the company starts its preparations for its winter service. The ‘Autumn Parade’ as it is known, takes place every year at its Stag Lane depot, which is home to six frontline gritters, back up and specialist vehicles as well as the Island’s road salt supply which provides an opportunity to test the fleet and brief drivers on the latest health and safety updates, and ensure they are familiar with the Island’s gritting routes. Each year the Island accrues 1,600 tonnes of graded rock salt, enough to cope with exceptionally severe winter weather. Island Roads have put together a fact sheet about their winter service with more information which can be found at: www.islandroads. com/factsheets. Community Activity and Events - RBL Shanklin Remembrance Service - Many residents joined us for the Royal British Legion Remembrance Service on Sunday the 14th November at the War Memorial Garden in Shanklin Old Village. The service was led and conducted by Rev Tony Richards. Public addresses were conducted by Bert Cuthbertson and Cllr David Cable. Our thanks go to the Shanklin RBL members - Steve Rogers, John Rushby, continued over the page
News report from Chris Quirk & Michael Beston continued Mark Watson and Tom Bodman. Shanklin Town Brass Band, under the direction of Karen Lewis and conductor Malcolm Lewis played the music in the morning that included ‘Jerusalem’ and the ‘National Anthem’. ‘The Last Post’ and ‘The Reveille’ was played by Mitch Jones. Thanks to Terry Carpenter for keeping the immaculate memorial garden and thanks also to the Rock Shop and Shanklin Theatre for supplying the electrical supply and PA system. Special thanks go to Shanklin Deputy Town Mayor; Cllr Sue Godden for all her help and direction along the way. Our season’s greetings to you all. Chris and Michael.

Shanklin Town Mayor update by Cllr Chris Quirk I recently had the pleasure of attending the opening of the “Prospero” and “Black Arrow” exhibition at the Wight Aviation Museum at Sandown Airport. There is a full-sized replica of the Black Arrow rocket that was built on the Island largely by Island engineers and tested at the site close to the New Battery at the Needles, before being shipped to Australia for launching. Prospero was the satellite that Black Arrow launched into space, and the satellite is still orbiting fifty years later. The museum has a fascinating selection of original documents and artefacts relating to this, and many other elements of aviation history on the Island; the Museum is well worth a visit. The Wight Aviation Museum is supported by a “Men in Sheds” group, and another group is based at Winchester House, the YMCA facility; last month I had the pleasure of opening their new Group Room, built to supplement the workshop they have operated there for some time. This voluntary group has carried out extensive renovation work at Winchester House and have recently refurbished two of the park benches owned by the Town Council, for which we are very grateful. Men in Sheds provide community spaces for men to connect, converse and create, and are a great community asset as well as being a support and friendship group. New members are always welcome. On a negative note, there have been a number of reports of objects being thrown from the Cliff Path, landing on the revetment and buildings below. These acts of mindless vandalism have already resulted in both injury and damage to property, if you know those responsible, please stop them or report them to the Police.

Raising the Roof Appeal Save our Community Space at St Saviour’s Hall Shanklin
St Saviour’s Hall is a community space for Shanklin and The Bay. The hall cannot be used at present as the roof has collapsed and there is only a temporary cover in place. As it is a Grade II listed building we need to raise £50,000 to repair it. We have a small amount of grant funding but we still have a long way to go. Please help us get the hall back in use so that once again it can be used by local community groups, sports clubs, social clubs and children’s parties. • • •

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre T:- 400744/07948 757977 E:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com Facebook:- debbieandre4sandown As we race towards Christmas and the end of yet another year, I find myself reflecting on all of the good things that have happened this year. The sense of community being stronger than ever. The joy of being able to meet friends and loved one’s face to face. Seeing our children return to school and being with their friends again. The continuing rollout of the vaccination programme has given us more confidence to meet in public and I would encourage anyone who hasn’t yet had their vaccination or booster yet to book on www.nhs.uk or to call 119. We’ve all been concerned about the vandalism and level of anti-social behaviour in our town. I’m pleased to report that our local policing team have identified the culprits and are taking action. I’m grateful to all residents who helped in this by reporting sightings. The Police and Community Day that was held was deemed to be such a success that it’s hoped to become a regular event. Thank you to everyone who came to the Bay CE Secondary site on the day and took part in the activities offered. I’m pleased to report that the owner of the former Esplanade Hotel and his representative have been onsite. I’m assured that they have a genuine desire to restore the building and I’m hopeful that this will be a major step forward in the regeneration of Sandown, especially the lower High Street and seafront. First steps are to tidy up and secure the site and that should have been completed by the time you read this. The Alliance administration recognises that we need more staff in our planning enforcement team and we are working with our Town councils to achieve this and do everything in
our power to address the problems of derelict buildings that blight our town. As many of you will know, there has been a significant change of political direction in respect of the area around Dinosaur Isle. I’m well aware of the value of this whole area as a free public space, for local residents as well as visitors. There is some ground-breaking work going on here in the museum at Dinosaur Isle and our friends at Brown’s have brought this much-loved attraction back to life. The Wildheart Trust has some ambitious plans to expand and reinforce their status as an animal rescue centre and I would thoroughly recommend a visit. There is much that we can do to preserve and enhance this area to both celebrate and embrace the natural environment and make it accessible to all as is right and fitting for an island that has been awarded Biosphere status. For those of you that haven’t yet enjoyed the Willow Walk, it may be the perfect opportunity to walk off the Christmas dinner. Don’t forget my Councillor surgeries on the first Saturday of the month where I’m sometimes joined by our local policing team. I’m grateful to Yaverland Sailing Club for accommodating us. Do come and meet with me to discuss any issues. Also, Cllr Heather Humby holds her weekly surgery at Sandown Library and is available every Thursday from 11am to midday and also on 402024 or heatherhumby@sandowntowncouncil.gov. uk Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy New Year.

ABUSE Doesn’t Always Leave Bruises and Broken Bones: The Inner Damage Can Be Much Worse ABUSE can be psychological, controlling, sexual, physical, emotional, digital or financial. ABUSE is control, blatant disrespect and hurtful words. ABUSE can come from any type of relationship - siblings, parents, children, friends, work colleagues, work management. Break the Cycle CIC was founded by Maggie Currie in 2016 and her ‘Mind the Gap’ courses have been written specifically to help people who have or are suffering abuse in any form. Maggie has experience of working with people from all walks of life and the results from her courses have been truly remarkable.
ALL ‘MIND THE GAP’ COURSES ARE FREE. The 12-week courses are for men and women, and they will teach you how to rebuild your confidence and move forward positively in your life, on your terms. The sessions help build support networks, learn new skills and increase self-belief.
It is NOT okay • To be humiliated in public • For you to be forced to do something you do not agree with • To be told you are ugly or unattractive • To be forced to choose between your friends or partner/wife/husband • To be controlled • To be made to feel guilty for somebody else’s anger. It is their issue and not your fault.
The next ‘Mind the Gap’ course for women will begin on Monday 10th January 2022 and the ‘Mind the Gap’ course for men will begin on Wednesday 12th January 2022. Both courses are being held at the Newport Methodist Church, Quay Street, Newport from 10am – 12pm To book your place on this course please email hello@breakthecycle.org.uk

Report from IW Councillor Ian Ward for Sandown South Email: ian.ward@iow.gov.uk Telephone: 01983 403193 Mobile: 07772559093 Facebook: Cllr Ian Ward BEM – Sandown South WISHING ALL SANDOWN RESIDENTS, A MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR Well, what a couple of years it has been with Covid lockdowns, then immunisation programmes, working from home, children off school etc. Let us hope that 2022 really is a year of recovery for all of us, although I doubt that things will ever get back to ‘Normal’ as we knew it. Anyway, as they say – things can only get better. I truly hope that each of you has a better 2022. SEA WATER QUALITY – SANDOWN BAY GRADED EXCELLENT AGAIN Due to the national outcry about the quality of sea water and rivers plus Southern Water being fined £90million I thought I’d check our local statistics. I think it is significant that the Isle of Wight was not included in the £90 million fine. I checked our water quality status each year back to 2017 and read that we have been graded Excellent since then. I also checked the level of contaminants in our sea water and found that according to the Environment Agency statistics our contaminants were minimal, quite literally at the lowest level that can be managed. Although Southern Water does discharge some untreated wastewater, it is very limited locally. A CALL TO SERVICE VETERANS AND OTHERS WHO MAY BE INTERESTED IN SETTING UP A ROYAL BRITISH LEGION BRANCH IN SANDOWN I have realised that there are a sizeable number of Service Veterans in and around
Sandown. So, can I ask if any of our veterans are interested in setting up our own Sandown Branch of the Royal British Legion, would you please contact me via my email address or telephone number above. Just to be clear, non-veterans are also most welcome to join as well. PLEASE CONTACT ME VIA MY OWN FACEBOOK PAGE I occasionally get informed about residents trying to contact me via some Facebook page or other. I do have my own Facebook page which is - Cllr Ian Ward BEM – Sandown South so please use it, or the Sandown Community Association FB page which I do monitor regularly. Of course, my telephone numbers or email address above are the most reliable ways of contacting me. Have a great Christmas and New Year, see you in 2022
