Part of this process has involved asking for the amount of income Shanklin’s discretionary services generate, this will help inform debate and ensure equitable use of resources - with the Town Council, we have always argued that it is unreasonable for the IW Council to cut services but still retain revenue from concessions. 4
Shanklin, and around the Island, and hope to arrange something in the spring. We also hope, working with Lake Parish and Sandown Town Councils, to be organising a programme of events and activities to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday - we are particularly keen that young people share in the celebrations. RAIN, AND OTHER ISSUES Working with local residents, we have continued to highlight the problems created by the under-maintenance along Shanklin Brook - we plan, by the time of the next magazine, to have arranged a site visit with Island Roads, involving local residents.
Monthly News Report for Shanklin continued... We have also worked to ensure the revetment is restored to normality as soon as possible, especially following the all year opening of the Restaurant on Small Hope: and we have put forward suggestions to help address ongoing seaweed problems on the front. Thanks also to local residents for highlighting concerns in Atherley Road Car Park, Benches on Landguard Road (hopefully now replaced), a street light on Blythe Way, loss of water supplies in Luccombe and other public realm concerns: hopefully, most issues have now been addressed and, by keeping on top of these type of issues, it stops costs escalating and reduces disruption for residents. We have also arranged to visit several residential homes in Shanklin, with the Chair of St Mary’s Hospital Trust and Director of Social Services, to help ensure a greater understanding of the pressures faced by the Town. secured grants for PLUTO and Battery Gardens Historical projects - protecting sites of cultural value and, potentially, generating income for the Bay: there will be other applications going forward, for other local projects. Congratulations to the volunteers at Shanklin Theatre, the winter stage renovation project has been a success and forthcoming plays - such as The Mousetrap, A Murder is Announced, Dial M For Murder and Grease will benefit from this, and their recent Britain in Bloom Royal Horticultural Society Award also highlights the contribution the Theatre makes to the Town We have also met with the Chamber of Commerce to try and take forwarding initiatives benefiting our retail outlets, and we will report on this further in the coming months. And finally, thanks to all those groups and organisations that have invited us to events in the last couple of months, it really is inspirational to see how many individuals give up their time for the benefit of others: their work really does make a difference.
Jon and Richard (Shanklin Town and County Councillors) PS Also, thanks again to all involved in the Crab Christmas Carol Concert and over £200 was collected for the Children’s Air Ambulance.

Revamp your wardrobe – live in the present By Maggie Currie – Life Coach
Change how you feel about yourself with the practical task of revamping your wardrobe. This can really help to get rid of those winter blues and the aftermath of Christmas and the New Year.
By ridding yourself of the unwearable rubbish, paradoxically you will find you have more of everything. • • • • •
More wearable, worthy clothes More time - you’ll get dressed so much quicker! More money - no more impulse buys More confidence More control
To totally revamp your wardrobe, you will need: • • • • •
Best part of a day, uninterrupted Bin bags, boxes Coat hangers Good, uplifting music (anything you like that motivates you) Loads of energy and a positive attitude
First, take every single thing out of your wardrobe. Make sure the whole thing is empty. Put everything on the floor or bed. You need to clear the decks. Next, create a reject pile and cast aside EVERYTHING that is: • • • • • • • •
Broken Stained Doesn’t fit and never will. Baggy and shapeless You have not worn for a year at least (be honest) Does it still fit? Is it flattering? Totally not you.
Take a step back and have a really good look at what is left. What are your clothes REALLY saying about you? Do you like what you hear? Is there anything not reflecting your true personality? If there is, add it to the reject pile. Be ruthless. Resolve now to live in the present. Let go of these clothes and make room for your new life.

Tuesday the 9th of February is Shrove Tuesday which always falls exactly 47 days before Easter Sunday and the date can be anything between 3rd February and 9th March inclusive. In the UK, Ireland, Canada and Australia, the day is known as “Pancake Day” as it is a common custom to eat pancakes as a meal. Pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. The fasting emphasised eating plainer food and refraining from food that would give pleasure: in many cultures, this means no meat, dairy products, or eggs. Shrove Tuesday was once known as a “half-holiday” in Britain. It started at 11:00am with the ringing of a church bell. On Pancake Day, “pancake races” are held in villages and towns across the United Kingdom. The tradition is said to have originated in 1445 when a housewife from Olney, Buckinghamshire, was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake, tossing it to prevent it from burning. The pancake race remains a relatively common festive tradition in the UK, even today. Participants with frying pans race through the streets tossing pancakes into the air and catching them in the pan while running. The traditional pancake is flavoured with sugar and lemon but over the years this has evolved and the filling/topping varieties are endless and are no longer just thought of as a sweet as many people make pancakes with savoury filling on Shrove Tuesday and other days of the year.
