Feeling lonely? You’re not alone.
No one should have no-one, and yet 1.4 million* older people feel cut off from society. Most people will feel lonely at some point in their lives, not only can this define their lives, but it can also have a significant impact on their wellbeing. There are 2,585* lonely older people here on the Isle of Wight, an alarming statistic, but it’s important to know that you are not alone. Age UK Isle of Wight have been supporting older people on the Island since 1973, and offer services to help people stay happy, healthy and connected, they strive to combat loneliness and social isolation in older people on the Isle of Wight.

Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of the February issue of Island Magazines. We are slowly working our way into the new year and Spring is finally getting closer. I have already seen a cluster of crocus bulbs pushing through the surface looking for the sun. Let’s hope they don’t have too long to wait. Have you noticed that as soon as the shelves were cleared of Christmas goodies they were soon replaced with Easter Eggs. Is this good or bad? I’m not sure where I stand on this as on the one hand I think everything is getting too commercialised and happening much earlier then is necessary but on the other hand who doesn’t like chocolate and to be honest I am a creme egg lover and I don’t believe they should be just for Easter... they taste so much better in February!!!! This months issue as usual is packed with news and information from local councillors. We have a great selection of advertiser offering a variety of services and don’t forget Shrove Tuesday is on the 13th February and I look forward to joining many others across the Island in perfecting the perfect pancake flip.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk February 2018 is the 75th Anniversary of the bombing raids on Shanklin which saw St Paul’s Vicarage destroyed, with the loss of life of the Vicar, Rev Robert Irons, and his family, as well as other Shanklin residents: this followed the January 3rd 1943 raid which saw the Sacred Heart, Davies Garage, Fire Station and Gloster Hotel destroyed with the death of fire fighters and local residents. There is a special commemorative service at St Paul’s Church, in Regent Street, from 10.30am, on Sunday 11th February 2018, attended by the Bishop of Portsmouth and the Island’s Lord Lieutenant, which is open to all residents and the local community; and will include a dedication to all Shanklin residents and fire personnel that lost their lives, in Shanklin, during World War 2. Shanklin’s Town Brass Band will be playing a special programme, in the Church, from 10am, and the service will also include contributions from relatives of victims of the raids. A special mural and plaque has also been commissioned, thanks to support from Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre and local British Legion, and this will be unveiled at the British Legion, in Collingwood Road, on the 11th: local Artist Karl Stedman designed the commemorative mural, AJ Wells have produced it, and content has been developed with the help of War Memorial Curator Terry Carpenter. Shanklin Community Library has also produced knitted poppies to commemorate all of the Shanklin residents that lost their lives, in the Town, in World War 2 and to be placed outside of the homes of the victims 4
together with commemorative certificates. Bishop Christopher is also at St Blasius Church on Sunday 4th February, for the morning service, when the origins of St Blasius will be celebrated at the blessing of the throats - St Blasius is also the patron saint of wool-combers, and was a 4th Century Bishop in Armenia. UPCOMING PROJECTS Plans are being developed to see extensive cliff top clearances along Keats Green and at Rylstone Gardens, helping protect the cliffs and also improve sea views for local residents and visitors, and also compliments the incredible amount of maintenance work undertaken by Shanklin Town Brass Band at their Chalet, and coinciding with the summer programme of outdoor concerts. The Town council are also submitting applications for the Seaside Award and South East England in Bloom, recognising the investment the Town makes in floral displays, beach safety and other projects: we are also progressing efforts to secure a permanent home for the weather monitoring system. Shanklin Football Club are developing plans to celebrate their 130th anniversary, and hopefully include a special street party to celebrate the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May 2018 - hopefully future editions will include more details. Shanklin’s St Blasius Primary School Academy, are also actively involved in the development of a special Growing Up In Shanklin DVD, which explores the key events in the Town’s history, including the bombings

Shanklin Town Council are also making presentations to the IW Council regarding this year’s Budget, which includes charging the Town £11,000 of Business Rates for Public Toilets – the Town Council secured a grant in 2017 to offset this cost, and also campaigned nationally to have this charge set aside due to its inequity (a campaign supported by other Town and Parish Councils on and off the Island): if the Town Council did not have to pay this charge, it would free up resources to maintain and improve other services. Hopefully, the above gives a summary of the work being progressed in the Town and

Caught on Camera!
Sunday 11th February
This month I have been very fortunate to come across the photography work of Darren Harris who has kindly allowed us to use his exquisite kingfisher photo on the front cover.
LOVE YOURSELF WELL
Like many, Darren is a wildlife enthusiast and his passion is birds of prey and kingfishers. After watching kestrels and photographing them on his phone he decided it was time to invest in a suitable camera to enable him to take his photography to the next level. In doing this, Darren has become accustomed to observing and learning the habits of the vast range of wildlife we have on the Island. The front cover picture was taken as Hersey Nature Reserve in Seaview and Darren is a regular visitor at the reserve and can sit for hours and will often see a flash of blue or orange dart by. By hiding, waiting, observing and keeping still for long enough, whilst ensuring his finger was poised on the shutter button paid off and Darren was able to catch the kingfisher in all its glory whilst it took a well earned rest before flying off again. The details of this truly magnificent bird are clearly shown in the picture and I wonder if he knew he was being watched and decided to play along so Darren could get the perfect shot!! Whatever the reason I think everyone will agree that this picture is just perfect and thank you to Darren for allowing us to share it.

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown Time for change? In my last report, I urged you all to get involved with your local community of Sandown in various different ways. Following the resignation of Councillor Max Grandchamp on December 11th, there is now a vacancy on Sandown Town Council. Max had been a councillor for over four and a half years and had given selflessly of his time for the benefit of our town. I shall miss his thoughtful and insightful comments and his sense of humour. At the time of writing, the date for the election is not known, but I will make sure that the date is widely publicised and would urge those of you in Sandown South to vote and to consider your choices carefully. I’m optimistic that you will be able to elect someone who will have the right skills to work as a team member of the town council for the benefit of our town. There is much work to be done. On that note, it was with regret that, following safety issues raised by the annual inspection, the Steven Jenkins Rainbow Park at Sandham Gardens had to be closed. Although I wasn’t involved at the outset, I’m aware of the massive community effort that went into fundraising to provide this wonderful facility for our town. As a council, we have pledged to give high priority to allocating funds from the council budget in restoring this facility and we are very grateful to local resident, Alex Lightfoot, who has generously offered his time and engineering expertise to carry out the necessary repairs once a detailed inventory has been carried out.

The plans for the refurbishment of the toilets at St John’s Road, Eastern Gardens and Yaverland will be formalised once the quotes have been received. I have taken on this responsibility and will give a public presentation of the options and costs before any commitments are made. Realistically, the works will not be completed for the 2018 summer season, but I am looking at alternatives to improve the current situation in the interim. I’m hoping to get the bus stop opposite the Bandstand at Culver moved 20 yards or so, as it’s currently necessary to walk in the road to wait at the bus stop and there is no seat or shelter there. We have a disabled resident who would like to use this bus stop, along with the visitors who stay in the nearby hotels, but is unable to access it safely. Unfortunately, the Cabinet member for transport, Ian Ward, has told me that the expense of changing it won’t be sanctioned as no one uses it! Please let me know your thoughts on this. Now that the demolition of the former Carlton Hotel has been completed and the work on Wight City imminent, the renaissance of Sandown can begin! As ever, I welcome your feedback and am very grateful to everyone who has contacted me to raise an issue or two. Although I don’t hold surgeries, I’m always happy to meet residents in person, just get in touch.
