Dear Readers Welcome to the first issue of 2016 and a Happy New Year to you all. Christmas is now done and dusted for another year and it’s time to get back to normal. I do love it when the Christmas decorations are put up but I think I like it more when they come down. The house always looks so much bigger and like many others I take my down on New Years Day. January is always a quiet month but there are still a couple of events happening on the Island and you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on page 5. This months issue is still packed with news and information including regular reports from Councillors and Parish Councils. The puzzle page is very popular and is a good way to get the brain working again after a hectic Christmas and New Years Eve. Have you set yourself some New Years resolutions? If you have are you likely to stick at them until at least February? Feel free to let me know if you make any, which ones you make and how long you stick to them!!! Until next month...... Our world is busy, busy, busy these days with seemingly constant demands on our energy mind and body. Our phones are busy chirping at us with text messages, email, tweets and Facebook updates; we are targeted by advertisers inside and outside of our homes; we face the daily stresses of busy working lives; busy roads and pavements; busy social lives; busy family schedules.

2 New Road – Brading – PO36 0DT www.yinspire.co.uk 333888 Relax – Renew Ͳ Revive

At these times its easy to feel overwhelmed and snap at the simplest thing – the unthoughtful word from a partner, the harsh look from a colleague, the unfiltered emotions of a child, the criticism of a stranger – and we can feel bruised, resentful and hurt. Later we may feel guilty for overreacting or not getting in some witty riposte. Put simply a stress circle from our daily lives.

These are just some examples of how we can find ourselves tense and tired from daily life. There are many ways to counter this, and Yoga is one of them. Often the image of Yoga is bending and twisting in stretchy clothes – and if I had a pound for every “I’m too stiff to do Yoga” I’d be able to retire! – but the original essence of Yoga is “stilling the thoughtwaves of the mind”, put simply getting on top of our stresses so they don’t overwhelm us. This can be from gentle movement, breathing, meditation and deep relaxation, all components of a typical Yoga class. If you recognise some of those stresses in your life, why not resolve to make a change in 2016? Yinspire is here to help, as are many other exceptional Yoga teachers on the Island.

Rotary

You may remember that I gave a mention about the Rotary Shoe Box Appeal in the December issue and I reported that the wonderful generous people of the Isle of Wight had donated 499 shoe boxes to be sent to disadvantaged children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Philippines. Well there has been a little bit of confusion and the figure of 499 that was given to me was for the number of boxes donated from just the residents of East Cowes and Cowes (a few late ones came in after the amount was tallied up so the final figure for East Cowes and Cowes is 514) and listed below are details of the final amounts which were at the drop off points in each town and you will see that they accumulate to an amazing 2326. Ryde 537, Sandown 242, Shanklin 97, Godshill 104, Vectis Sunrise (Newport) 514, Ventnor 56 and West Wight 262 Well done to everyone who donated and all those working behind the scene ensuring they got to their destinations. 5

Resolutions!!!! By Debbie Mason They say that December is an expensive month and this may be true for many but not me. Oh, don’t get me wrong I’m not some sort of money saving guru, in fact I’m just the opposite. January is my downfall month and all because of ‘New Year Resolutions’. Yep its that time when I think I can better myself, change myself and find a happier self within and whilst writing this I know it’s wrong but every year reasoning goes out the window and I become obsessed with the year ahead. Every new year is the year I believe that I am going to start loving fitness and obviously each year is a different type of fitness which inevitably means that each year I have to buy new fitness gear, new fitness shoes, and of course the latest fitness machine and not forgetting the latest bag, sweat band, drink container and all other fashionable fitness paraphernalia that goes with it. Once truly kitted out in my new gear I find my fitness obsessions is lucky to last longer that the first week of January, in fact the leftover turkey lasts longer then my new gym membership. I don’t just stop there, because I also start the diet!!! “This diet is definitely going to work” is a favourite saying of mine and one which becomes a mantra and I am so positive that this is the ONE that I envisage a slimmer and healthier me and reckon I will drop the minimum of one dress size by the end of the first month. As an incentive I think its best to go out and buy these one dress size smaller clothes before I have reached this new weight as seeing them hanging in the wardrobe will surely be all the encouragement I need…. All of those clothes have never been worn and most have been given to charity shops but a few have been held back to remind me of what I could of achieved but I so miserably failed at. I’ve also thought I was very musical and could easily play a musical instrument, I mean how hard could it be… I’ve covered most of the

string section and at least half of the percussion and my neighbours have written to me begging me not to start on the brass section. I aimed to be a one man orchestra, playing gigs at Osborne House but even I have had to admit defeat when I couldn’t even chime the triangle on time. All these resolutions cost me plenty of money and I haven’t stuck to any of them. Maybe I’m weak or maybe deep down I am just happy with the way I am. Unfortunately even with no resolutions set for 2016 I just know that it will still be an expensive month as I will definitely be at the January sales and yes I do need another one of those and I know it’s a size too small but at that price it’s a bargain and if I don’t get it I might regret it for the rest of my life and one thing I know about life is, you should never have regrets.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Thanks again to all the organisations that arranged events to celebrate Christmas and the New Year, yet again the range of activities involving the local community highlighted how fortunate Shanklin is, and we tried to attend as many events as possible. OUTCOMES OF PUBLIC MEETING Thanks again to residents that attended the December public meeting, at the Theatre, and the comments on the Area Action Plan have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council, and priorities include ensuring parking supports businesses and residents, that housing in the Bay better meets local need, and that the infrastructure (including Transport, Public Amenities, and Services) are strengthened to maintain employment and the local economy. Shanklin Town Councils joint project with the Chamber of Commerce will be taken forward in the Spring, with 16 local businesses being able to secure £250 grants this year, and for the next tow years - we are also looking to promote other grants, from the Solent Economic Partnership, to support local businesses. We are also looking to secure the future of the Town’s public conveniences (Rylstone, Falcon Cross, Spa, Chine, Esplanade, Tower Cottage) and have highlighted the benefit of these locations, for example Car Parking Income and Concessionaire revenue - we have also, with Sandown and Lake councillors, asked for a meeting on the IW Council’s Parking Strategy and how this can be used to support economic regeneration and improvements to resident needs. The Coastal Community Team has welcomed resident input into the ‘Shaping the Bay’ project, and local initiatives have already progressed - the network that has been established will continue and there will be further Bay wide initiatives, especially involving local schools. Residents also highlighted the need for a greater Police presence in Shanklin (which has reduced in recent months), and a regular surgeries in Shanklin Community Library are already planned for 2016; and the Community Library have already extended the range of services on offer, and the new Friends group have secured a bench for the nearby bus stop, and redecorated the counter area. We also voted to protect the £20,000 Government Funding allocation to Shanklin (other Towns and Parishes also receive funds) that the IW Council threatened to remove, against Government Direction, and the Town Council have indicated that this will be ring-fenced to protect public services in the future: the Town already supports the Community Library (the IWC propose to directly fund staff in other Community Libraries), Beach Cleaning and Beach Safety, the Theatre, Grass Cutting and Grounds Maintenance, a programme of tourist events, commemorative projects, and countless other initiatives that some other towns have funded. In addition, we have raised issues regarding the new waste collection service and were disappointed the new contractor did not attend the public meeting - they have said they will arrange a future meeting in the Bay, and we will keep asking for the date to be made public as soon as konwon. 12

Monthly News Report for Shanklin continued... JANUARY 3RD COMMEMORATION Shanklin Town Council, together with the Royal British Legion and local churches, have planned a commemorative event for the 3rd January at St Blasius Church honouring the memories of those that died in World War 2 air-raids on Shanklin, and we plan further, appropriate, commemorative events in the future and hope to commission a permanent tribute to those that died on this day, and during the other raids on Shanklin in the War. The first World War 2 Air Raid on Shanklin was on 1st November 1940, when Napier House, on Shanklin Esplanade was destroyed: whilst subsequent records are not complete, research and anecdotal evidence shows that Shanklin, and its residents, suffered greatly in the War. The Air Raid of 3rd January 1943 saw members of the National Fire Service, staying at the Gloster Hotel in Landguard Road, were killed (a plaque to their memories is located in the Fire Station, as well as at the War memorial); 6 parishioners in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, were also killed; and bombs were dropped in Green Lane, Rochester Terrace, Hyde Road, and other locations with significant fatalities, and extensive destruction of buildings. On February 17th, we are planning an event at the War Memorial, commemorating the bombing that occurred in the War in Shanklin, and how we can ensure that there is an appropriate permanent memorial to the memory of those that died in Shanklin.

E A F

We also hope to organise events to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday, involving local schools and the wider community: Shanklin has extensive royal links, and more recently Shanklin organisations (Youth Centre, Theatre and Green Towns) have received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, in addition to Prince Edwards’ and Princess Sophie’s visit in 2014, and the Queen’s earlier visit in 1965. In addition, we are working on several projects with local sports groups, to seek to develop the programmes they offer - we have secured funds to support the local table tennis group and provide first aid training for local volunteers. Thanks again to all those volunteers that are involved in the range of groups and organisations that Shanklin are fortunate to have - we appreciate the commitment and dedication of all that contribute and, despite the increasing challenges that exist, know the local community value the difference they make. Best wishes for 2016 Jon and Richard (Shanklin Town and County Councillors)
