Helping A Feathered Friend in Need. What do I do now? or Who do I call? Are the questions in the forefront of anyone’s mind if they have come across an injured bird, whether it be the common garden sparrow or one of the Queens protected swans. The first call should be to Wild Bird Aid which is a local ‘not for profit organisation’ run by Kerstin Voigt and Claire Newsome. Wild Bird Aid specialise in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of native birds. Claire specialises in all native bird species with emphasis on seabirds, pigeons and doves and Kerstin specialises in corvids (ravens, carrion crows, rooks, jays, magpies, jackdaws), birds of prey as well as swallows, martins, nightjars and swifts and all native birds. They will both endeavour to help all bird species, but at the moment they are unable to provide long time care for any birds not listed and will therefore need to get in touch with other rescues on the Island or mainland. Wild Bird Aid at present are caring for approximately 70 birds and everyday they are faced with problems of running an organisation that is so widely used by the local community. The areas in which they really need help is with volunteers to cover a variety of duties but particularly people to help with the transportation of injured birds and ideally they would like to have volunteers in all areas on the Island, so if an injured bird Residential & Commercial is found, the volunteer can be called upon to collect the bird grounds maintenance and bring it to Wild Bird Aid which is based at a private home contracts, including turfing, in Wootton Bridge for assessment and care. Volunteers are hedge and grass cutting. also needed to take care of animals in their own home e.g Timber Fencing Specialists to rear orphaned small song birds, as Wild Bird Aid cannot accommodate all of these at their premises. Training will be Over 30 years experience provided if needed. They also require volunteers to help with and fully insured feeding and cleaning and as you can imagine the running costs Covering the whole of are very high and they are always happy to receive financial the Isle of Wight donations or if you have an Amazon account please take a look at the Wild Bird Aid wish list. Fund-raising plays an important erectafenceiw@gmail.com role and they are looking for anyone who would like to come aboard to organise fundraising events to help raise the much needed funds. • Improved fitness

Some birds which are brought to them will obviously need more in depth medical treatment and on many occasion huge vets bills are accumulated, one such case recently was the swan that had swallowed a fishing hook and therefore vets bills, call out charges, x-rays and procedures were incurred and these can run into hundreds of pounds.

Sandown Report from Heather Humby - Telephone 01983 402024 E.mail heather.humby@sky.com 7, Pier Street, Sandown, PO36 8JR IW PUBLIC HEALTH. SANDOWN LOCAL AREA COORDINATOR. At the recent meeting of Sandown Forum, Sally Evans introduced herself, and explained the type of work she is hoping to carry out as coordinator. It is envisaged that sites on social media (Twitter and Facebook) will promote the various advice that is available from IWC Public Health. Members expressed concern that there now appeared to be a myriad of information coming out of the new organisations and groups that are being set up, and was causing confusion to vulnerable, lonely, and disabled people, would might find it very difficult or impossible to seek advice. It was agreed that a letter be sent, expressing concern. Please note that Sandown Forum will resume their monthly meetings on 9th September. LOCAL POLICE PRIORITIES FOR SANDOWN. Vehicle Crime. Several complaints have been received of criminal damage being caused to vehicles, wing mirrors have been kicked off, and it is believed groups of youths are responsible for the damage. Police have been patrolling the areas concerned, and over the last month there has been no further damage. The use of mopeds and motorcycles in an anti-social manner is causing concern to residents in Avenue Road, Carter Street, The Skate Park, Sandham Gardens, Yaverland Car Park and the Seafront. It is anticipated that Neighbourhood Watch will now be set up in some areas. For further information, please check the police web site. NEW MAYOR FOR SANDOWN. At the AGM of Sandown Town council, Councillor Raj Patel was elected Town Mayor, and Councillor Max Grandchamp, elected Deputy Mayor. The resigning Mayor, Mrs Cathy Wright, said how much she had enjoyed representing the community of Sandown over the past year, and hoped that the new Mayor 4
would enjoy his year of office, as much as she had done. BAY CE PRIMARY SCHOOL. Congratulations to The Bay School, who, along with other voluntary groups, are planting and caring for the planters on the Broadway, and around the town. However, help is still needed to purchase various suitable plants, and businesses and garden centres are to be asked to contribute any surplus plants, or act as sponsors to the scheme. Over sixty pupils belong to the ‘Community Kid’s Project’, other projects include looking after the tubs and hanging baskets at Sandown Railway Station, planting and tending the gardens at The Briars Residential Home, and supporting ‘Ability Dog’s 4 Young People’ Charity. The team are to join with Arreton School in a joint project with Gdask School in Moldavia 95 YEAR’S. YOUNG. July, sees one of Sandown’s most popular residents, Peggy Forward, celebrate her 95th birthday, and in her honour, a concert is to be held at St John’s Church, will be dedicated to her. Peg is an inspiration to anyone who has worries over growing older, for she still enthusiastically participates in many community events, and is always the life and soul of any gathering. On behalf of many Sandonian’s, may I wish her a very happy birthday, which she will share with Bill, her husband, and family. LIBRARY JUNCTION RESURFACING. Yes, our High Street looks great, but why was the junction, outside the library not resurfaced at the same time? All the required equipment was on site, but now will have to be returned to complete the job, with all the necessary road closures and diversions. I await a response as from IWC, as to when the work will be carried out.

Fed up with unreliable window cleaners? Then look no further.
It appears there are no major problems with the structure of the building, and apart from a small area, could be used immediately. Grants from various organisations could be available. Following a majority vote, with just one abstention, it was agreed that the council should further investigate the possibility of bringing the Town Hall, back into use for council and community use SANDOWN LIBRARY SURGERY. I will be available at Sandown Library from 11am until noon, to endeavour to answer any council related queries

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk We would like to start by congratulating Shanklin Town Brass Band on being awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, in the year of the Queen’s 90th Birthday, and following their success at the IW Community Action Awards. This national recognition reflects the hard work, dedication and commitment of Malcolm and Karen Lewis, as well as all involved in the Band since their inception in the 1990’s - and not only is this Award truly merited for their musical standards, it also recognises the contribution they have made to the development of young musicians, and the work they have put into the Chalet (saving it from potential demolition).

News Report for Shanklin continued... At Isle of Wight Council level, we have both been re-elected by the Full Council to our Posts as Chair of Environment and Transport Select Committee, and Health & Adult Social Care Scrutiny - we believed that, at this time of massive financial challenge, the Island needs stability and that their needs to be a crosschamber approach that puts local people above politics, and we welcome the Full Council supporting our position.
enjoy - we try to get to as many events as possible, and appreciate the efforts made by all that make a difference to the Town. Jon and Richard (Shanklin Town and County Councillors) PS And this would have been our headline comment (if it wasn’t for the success of the Town Band) - we would like to congratulate Shanklin Athlete Jess Andrews, and her proud family, on her success on being selected for the Team GB squad going to Rio for the Olympics, representing the country in the 10,000 meters: Jess was a student at Sandown High School (and attended IW Athletics Club. We are sure that there will be more details of Jess’s running schedule for Rio, in the coming months, and know that Shanklin, and the Island, will be cheering Jess on.
Locally, Jon has been reappointed Mayor of Shanklin, with Steve Knight being appointed Deputy - with the issues facing Shanklin in the forthcoming year, and beyond, its important that the Town works together to protect muchneeded services and promote the strengths that Shanklin has, for residents and tourists alike. We are also working on several local planning issues, business issues (inc campaigning to retain the presence of one of our banks), and engagement with the Local Authority (we have many issues that remain unresolved, despite ongoing requests for clarity, Residential Carehome and are sure residents will share our frustration).
