A lot has been happening at the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital since our last update. We had a record number of applications in 2016 for funds for equipment and resources from various parts of the Hospital We were able to make a large number of grants which will enhance the already excellent care and service we Islanders get from St Mary’s. The items have been ordered and are coming into use daily. Examples of what we were able to provide are monitoring equipment for community midwives, traction splints, transfer hoists for stroke patients, warming equipment for hypothermia cases dealt with by ambulances, dementia friendly crockery, and learning resources for children with special needs. We also looked after our staff with some exercise equipment and refurbishing a rest room. We have taken the opportunity to give a fresh look to our branding and have launched a new website. Check it out at www.fosmiow.co.uk. We are now communicating regularly on Facebook and gradually building up a healthy following there. It is important to let people know what we are doing for the Hospital and how they can help us to do it. Our amazing volunteers are running our friendly cafe and well stocked shop in the Hospital foyer. And we now have an outlet in the Health and Wellbeing Centre in Ryde. With the Laidlaw cafe and the daily ward trolley, that gives us five outlets to look after so if you have some time to spare to volunteer, please do contact us through the website or ring our office on 534405.
At a cost of £3,000, the Friends have provided 20 traction splints for the ambulances, to be used to relieve excruciating pain from certain leg fractures. Paramedic Mike Wigley (pictured) explained that essential pre-hospital treatment for someone suffering a mid-shaft femur fracture is to relieve the pain through a combination of pain relief and splintage.
Although legacies and donations are very important to us, our cafes and shop are our main source of income, and we do see these facilities as being a very important part of our service to the hospital. The coffee and tea is good and reasonably priced and there is a range of sandwiches and snacks. We have “Splintage is particularly important, as joined the Hospital initiative to promote less separating the fracture bone fragments sugary food and drinks and our customers are provides significant pain relief and reassurgetting used to that. Our lovely staff have a ance for the patient,” he said. “If a bone is caring attitude and always reach out to those shattered in half the leg muscles immediately in the cafe who are struggling. This is not pull the bones together, and it really hurts.” always physically, as inevitably we meet many people who have had bad news or who are worried about a loved one. We work closely with the Hospital to make sure that our funds really do make a difference to patients, staff and the Island community and we enjoy great support from the Trust, to help us to help them. So if you can help us in any way, do get in touch via the website or by ringing the number above. We would love to hear from you. 4

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 E- debbie.andre@iow.gov.uk debbieandre4sandown It’s just been a few weeks since the excitement of the local elections, but I’m delighted to be able to update you on how I have been working to serve you and what I have been doing to address your concerns. Immediately after the election, I undertook a comprehensive induction programme at County Hall to prepare me for my role as a County Councillor. I’m also going to be attending training for my role as a Town Councillor at the end of June along with several of your Sandown Town councillors. As many of you will know, I was already involved with several groups in Sandown and, in order to ensure that Sandown residents have a voice on all island matters, I have now become your representative of the Isle of Wight Association of Local Councillors, the South Wight Health Forum, and the Police Liaison Working Party, and also a committee member on the Policy and Scrutiny Committee for Children’s Services and the Policy and Scrutiny Committee for Regeneration, Housing, Planning and the Environment. Sandown Bay Academy I would like to express my gratitude to all the staff, parents and students of Sandown Bay Academy who are putting up a fantastic show of strength under extremely stressful circumstances. I have been so pleased that I could use my new position to engage with those in authority to support those efforts. I’m encouraged that we have been able to secure an option of an “all-through community school”. I would urge you all to respond to the IOW Council online consultation even if you have signed the 6
petition. The consultation runs from the 12th June until the 24th July. It can be accessed on the Isle of Wight Council website: www. iwight.com/consultations Sandown Sites of Special Interest One of the most frequent concerns that residents express is the state of some of the buildings and development sites around our town. In order to find out the true situation relating to these sites, I requested a private members briefing with one of the Senior Planning Officers at County Hall. The officer was very helpful and informative and I learnt a lot about how the planning process works as well as details relating to specific sites. I will be giving a full update on the properties of concern at each full council meeting which I urge you to attend. However, I would like to mention Wight City which I know is a huge concern that has been uncertain for far too long. I’m delighted to let you know that I have met with the new developer and have seen the proposed plans which include several town houses and apartments with parking. The development is planned to be completed in 5 phases and work is expected to commence in January/February 2018 with the demolition of the existing building. Island Line As many of you know, the decision has now been made to keep the Island Line in the National Rail Network Franchise following the takeover by First Group MTR. They are planning to invest in the rail system as a whole which will include the Island Line, looking at replacing infrastructure and rolling stock and I will keep you up to date with developments.
Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 E- debbie.andre@iow.gov.uk debbieandre4sandown Sandown Football Club One of the first invitations that I received as a councillor was to the Sandown Football Club presentation evening which I was delighted to attend. This has been a very successful season for the club and it was a wonderful privilege to be able to share in that success and see the players rewarded for their efforts throughout the season. I was honoured to be asked to present the medals to the players and enjoyed being able to congratulate each one personally. Here are the results for the season: Winners of The Kynges Towne Tournament, a pre-season 6 a side tournament back in the summer of 2016. Division 2 title was won by the first team. They had tough games especially against Northwood, but eventually pipped them to the title. The Div 3/Comb 2 Supplementary Cup was
won by the reserves who, after a successful campaign, beat St Helens in the final. The club currently play on the Sandown Bay Academy sports field, but need their own permanent ground. I am currently looking into the possibility of securing land at the former Sandham Middle School site, following on from the work by your previous ward councillor Bob Blezzard, which would enable them to build their own clubhouse. This is a terrific club who have been providing the opportunity for local residents to play football at a high level for many years and they deserve our full support. Once we have secured a permanent ground for them, we will be looking to fundraise to ensure that this club continues to go from strength to strength. “UP THE MIGHTY SANDOWN!” I’ve already had quite a few residents contacting me over various issues ranging from concerns over the future of Sandown Bay Academy, to overflowing dog bins, the search for a permanent football ground and anti-social behaviour. I welcome your input and urge you to contact me, via any of the above contact details, with your concerns in the first instance so that I can try to get the information needed to resolve any issues before they become bigger problems. 7

Mr Wally AWOL and Friends Mr Wally AWOL and Friends is an Isle of Wight (Cowes based) self funded voluntary organisation which rescues and rehabilitates Wild Birds. It is run by Kay Ounsworth, with help from Donna Henderson, Tracy Lane and Leah Ounsworth. Their aim is to help sick and injured birds back to peak health and get them returned back into the wild once this has been accomplished. They work closely with a fantastic team of veterinary surgeons. If you spot a sick or injured bird, the best course of action is to: 1) Secure the bird in a box with air holes. 2) Give the bird something comfy to nestle on such as tissue, kitchen roll, an old towel or something similar. 3) Place the box with the bird inside in a dark, warm, quiet place while you seek assistance. They welcome calls for advice or to arrange collection. Please call 07765564479 or 01983 247528 or message their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/wallyawol They work almost entirely by bus, so reaching more remote parts of the Island at night time is not always possible. However they are happy to arrange a more convenient meeting place, grab a taxi or advise as necessary. If you would like to help keep Wally AWOL running smoothly, Pets with Hart in Newport (opposite Hurst) happily accept donations for them and they also have an Amazon Wish List: Wally AWOL Wish List Link: www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wishlist/C0X58RG47PSS

Easing the burden of bereavement
Organising a funeral for a loved one is always a difficult experience - but it can be eased considerably by a caring and professional service such as that offered by William Hall Independent Funeral Directors. While many long-standing family businesses have been acquired by larger organisations, William Hall has remained resolutely independent, which means it remains small enough to offer exceptional personal service, with more competitive pricing than the big multi-nationals. As a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) and the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF), it abides by the highest professional standards and codes of conduct. Founded 25 years ago, the business recently re-located to larger premises, offering two beautifully furnished arranging rooms and two peaceful chapels of rest. The pleasant grounds include a coach house for the company’s two striking Victorian horse-drawn hearses. With two qualified funeral directors and four trained members of staff, the company is able to cover the whole of the Island with a dedicated 24 hour service, 365 days a year. The range of funeral options include environmentally friendly burials at nearby Springwood Woodland Cemetery. Proprietor and senior funeral director William Hall said: “We pride ourselves on our professionalism and attention to detail, and will always endeavour to deliver our clients’ every wish, be it large or small”. Find William Hall Independent Funeral Directors at Sunnybrow, Winford Rd, Newchurch, Sandown, call 01983 868688 or visit the website: www.williamhallfuneraldirectors.com
Monthly News Report for Shanklin from Councillor Michael Beston Email michael.beston@iow.gov.uk You probably would have read in the June edition of this magazine that I’m an active supporter of the Island’s unique railway line. On the 12th June 2017 I met with colleagues and representatives of First Group for an update on the recent communication confirming their investment for Island Line. The new seven year franchise was awarded on the 27th March this year and will commence on the 20th August 2017. First Group is one of the largest rail operators in the UK with their franchises currently delivering around 90% punctuality. Island Line faces multiple issues across each operational area, the route itself has suffered significant financial losses, the rolling stock is almost 80 years old, and the infrastructure is problematic with issues of flooding at Ryde tunnel, bridge clearance, passing loop and electricity power supply. But Island Line is important; it provides crucial connectivity for Island communities on the Island and to / from the mainland, it also gives links to tourists, students & Island commuters. First Group have given their continued commitment for proposals to cover both the route’s sustainability & shorter term initiatives to develop a sustainable future for Island Line, I will give more details and further updates in my next communication in August.
