June 2016

Dear Readers Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. I can’t believe that close to half the year has gone already. I’m loving these light evenings and there is no better place to be then here on the Island, especially if the sun is shining. We have had a few really nice hot days recently, as well as a few miserable ones too, but lets hope that once summer is finally here the sun will shine every day. The Island will be getting ready for the Isle of Wight Festival in June and there will be celebrations happening across the Island to mark the occasion of the Queens 90th Birthday. There are many other events happening too and you will find details of them all in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 8 and 9. If you are holding or know of an upcoming event please drop me an email so we can include it in the next issue.

Weeks, months and years afterwards, a domestic abuse survivor, although away from the violence, can still live a life mentally imprisoned by the trauma they have experienced. Many reporting a deep sense of self doubt and feelings of uselessness and insecurity about the future. When talking to men and women who would potentially take part in the program, many spoke of a need for support to forgive themselves for being victims of abuse and overcome a lack of self worth so they were able to have a better outcome in life for not only themselves but their children also. The six module programme is designed to fill the gap between agency provision and social care. While external agencies support these men and women to build external aspects of recovery, ‘Mind the Gap’ will work with the internal aspects of recovery supporting participants to not only come to terms with their experience but live a fulfilled life past the experience too. The three directors, Maggie Currie, Kelvin Currie and Ian McLaughlin, aim to be working with a diverse range of men and women coming from all ethnicities and backgrounds. There will be no restriction to participating in the program for beneficiaries. We will be using a range of training material that complements each participant’s learning style. The sessions will also be interactive and engaging to allow the participants to learn through practice and experience vs theory. They are also planning to work with homeless people early in 2017 to help and support them to move forward in their lives and reintegrate into society. Sandown Report from Heather Humby - Telephone 01983 402024 E.mail heather.humby@sky.com 7, Pier Street, Sandown, PO36 8JR

RECYCLING AND WASTE CHANGES - I am very aware of the many problems residents have had with the new system of waste collection, and hopefully they will soon be resolved. Many elderly or infirm residents have been worried that they will be charged 52 pence if they are unable to place their bins or bags in the correct place for collection. May I assure them, that if they have an infirmity, they will not be charged, and only those who could, but choose not to, will be charged. SAVOY FLATS - Work on the demolition, seems to have come to a halt, with no activity taken place for some weeks. No explanation has been given as to why the work has stopped, but it is disappointing that for yet another summer we may have to put up with this eyesore in such a prominent part of the town. HIGH STREET - It was a long wait, but at long last our High Street has been re surfaced, and what a difference it has made to the appearance of our main shopping area. Congratulations are due for the responsible way the work was undertaken by Island Roads, mainly during the late evening and early morning, causing very little inconvenience to businesses or motorists.

SATURDAY LIBRARY - As many Sandonian’s are aware, on most Saturday’s, you will find me at Sandown Library, from 11am until noon, As a Sandown Councillor, I have held a weekly surgery for many years, as I find it helps to keep me in touch with the problems, concerns and views of the residents of Sandown. Matters brought to my attention cover a vast range of subjects, and I am usually able to advise on whom to contact, or, in some cases, able to deal with the problem myself.

and special events for children. The library staff are always helpful, and since the closing of the Tourist Information Centre, now answer numerous queries from visitors. The Friend’s of Sandown meet on a regular basis, under the chairmanship of Donna Newnham, and run various events, raising funds which are used to improve facilities. In today’s age of austerity and ‘cut’s it is important we use and support our library, if we want to retain the service they currently provide. Future activities include a Dance Group for exercise and Well Being, which will meet on alternative Thursday’s from 3 to 4.30pm. Further information is available from the library. Tel: 402748. BATTERY GARDENS PROJECT - The Battery Gardens project is proceeding well. As many Sandonians are aware, there is so much history hidden at the gardens, where underground rooms once housed guns, that were used to protect Sandown Bay.. A building structural survey with initial drawings has been produced, which will be important in gaining Scheduled Monument Status for the site. It is hoped that Southampton University will carry out a geophysical survey of the area, to establish if there are any hidden guns still in the battery.

CANINE DEJECTION - Many dog’s in Sandown are now looking extremely dejected, for their daily beach walks came to an end on 30th April. I walk my dog on the beach, and I must say I also miss our stroll along the sea shore, and over the last of seven months, I have made many friends with both dogs and their owners. I will miss them, but doubtless, on October Being present at the library, makes me aware of 1st we will once again reunite, and our canine how popular it has become, and how it is used friends will once again be smiling. Meantime, it for a variety of community events, including film will be ‘walkies’ along the revetment, dodging shows, quizzes, art lessons, singing groups, numerous bikes.
