Dear Readers Welcome to the March issue which looks set to be a busy month, first we have Mothering Sunday on the 6th March and then on the 25th March is Good Friday and the start of Easter. Both of these events are early this year and lets hope we have good weather for both and that Spring will have finally arrived by then. The weather over the last month has been a good mixture of wind and rain. Our lovely Island took a battering from storm Imogen recently but we survived and surprisingly there was very little damage. In this months issue you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on page 10 and we have teamed up with Lost Pets IOW in an attempt to reunite missing pets with their owners and you will find more information on this on page 6. The pets missing are from different areas on the Island so please spread the word to family and friends. We have some great advertisers and please keep using their services and remember to tell them you saw them advertised here. I hope you all have a lovely Easter and remember to eat plenty of chocolate!!!! Until next month...

‘SANDOWN REPORT’, from Heather Humby email heather.humby@sky.com Tel: 402024 SANDOWN HONOUR TRAIL - At last, Sandown Community Partnership, have overcome all obstacles, and arrangements are now finally in place for the Sandown’s Honour Trail. It will be situated on the Sea Wall on Central Beach, from the Pier to Eastern Gardens. The ceramic tiles are 12” X 12” and are priced at £50, which includes the choice of engraving. Order forms giving all information are available from Sandown Library, and also at the Sandown Town Council Office. (Tel: 408287). It is hoped that all those interested in purchasing a commemorative tile will now take up this opportunity.

RECYCLABLE WASTE BAGS Why did the Council cease to supply recyclable clear bags, knowing the new ‘Gull Proof’ bag would not be available until Spring? This has caused difficulties for those who are not supplied with bins, and now have to purchase the appropriate bags. (It is understood that when issued, only ONE Gull Proof bag will be allowed per household!) The criteria for using sacks will be more strict than at present, and each individual will be assessed for their ability to use ‘wheelie bins’. Residents with mobility problems will still be able to apply for ‘back door’ collection.

S106 CONTRIBUTIONS - A considerable amount of money is held by IW Council for contributions made by developers who have undertaken work in various areas In Sandown, the amount held is £31,560, and this was accrued by the redevelopment of the former Grange Hall Hotel.

SHARING THE COST OF TOURISM - In the past, providing the cost of tourism has always been shared by all Island tax payers, but as it is not considered a statutory duty, Isle of Wight Council have now informed Town and Parish Councils, that they should consider taking over the services, as they will be ceasing to do so!

The amount is divided into three sections: 1) £10,500. For mobility and pedestrian access within Sandown. 2) £4,060. for Improvement to Los Altos Park. 3) £17,000. for Improvements to Battery Gardens, and other tourist facilities. TREE MUTILATION - In Sandown, we will be fortunate if the foliage on our street tree’s appears before July, for once again, IW Council have undertaken the bi annual pruning, which leaves trees looking mutilated, and grotesque eyesores. I have received complaints from many residents, who do understand that tree’s need pruning, but fail to understand why it is necessary to cut entire branches off to the trunk. FIRST ACT 2000 - Congratulations to ‘First Act 2000’, a theatre group for people with learning difficulties, who have been nominated for an award of excellence by NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) for their Christmas production of ‘Aladdin’ held at Shanklin Theatre.

This has resulted in Sandown tax payers now having to pay for the costs of Beach Cleaning, Lifeguard Services, and the maintenance of Parks, Gardens, and Flower Beds. Last month, Public Toilets were added to the ever growing list! Believing that tourism is still the lifeblood of the Island, Sandown Town Council have requested IWALC (Isle of Wight Association of Local Councils) to ask all local councils to consider make a per capita contribution towards providing these vital visitor services. It is good news to learn that IWC have sensibly abandoned their plans to impose parking meters in the High Streets of Sandown and Shanklin, which would have been devastating for both town’s, and led to the closure of more shops. SATURDAY MORNING SURGERY. I continue to be available at Sandown Library, to endeavour to answer any council related problems or queries, from 11am until noon.

Movement Growing Against Oil and Gas Extraction on the Island Licenses awarded for oil and gas drilling on the Island - In December 2015 a license was awarded to UK Oil and Gas Investments (UKOG) and Solo Oil to explore for oil in a 200 sq km area on the Isle of Wight. This decision came just days after the close of COP21, the historic United Nations Climate Change Conference that resulted in a historic agreement by 195 countries to tackle climate change. To keep to this commitment and safeguard our future we must keep fossil fuels underground, meaning no new oil and gas wells, not here, not anywhere.

To frack or not to frack? This is not the Slate Stone Porcelain question - In late January UKOG announced their intentions to move forward with applying Walls Floors Repairs for permission to drill for oil in Arreton. Despite the beautiful rural character of the village the No job too big or too small company has described this as a “brownfield” Over 30 years of experience project. Due to this well having first been drilled in 1974 the company is able to move Call Dave on 563602 or 07733084179 straight through the exploration phase to the appraisal phase. This could be just one step from commercial exploitation of the site. UKOG has said that they plan to drill without “massive” hydraulic fracturing (commonly known as fracking), but indicated they would use limestone stimulation techniques (commonly known as acid fracking). For all possible Residential & Commercial grounds maintenance extraction techniques there is growing evidence of serious and sometimes irreversible impacts to landscape, groundwater, air contracts, including turfing, hedge and grass cutting. quality, roads, environment and human health.

Island beauty spot also threatened - The second spot identified by the license holders as having significant potential is the M-prospect, an offshore site near Compton Bay. A place dear to the hearts of many islanders, more than 130 people came together on January 31st, 2016 at Hanover Point to demonstrate our opposition to this project and others around the world. The gathering was the lead story that night on BBC South Today!

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Thanks to all residents that were able to attend the Public Meeting, at Shanklin Theatre, on 10th February, and to all those that got in touch to support our campaign to stop the IW Council installing parking meters in Regent Street (which we felt would lead to the closure of more shops, the loss of jobs, and would lose the Council more income in Business Rates than it would generate in Parking Fees - charges that would not apply to many other Island Towns), as well as to contribute to the Town Council’s plans for 2016 and beyond: and we hope that the action we have taken has prevented meters being installed in Shanklin, and other Island locations.

Community Library, Tourist Information Point, supporting Shanklin Theatre, Spa Toilets, Beach Safety, Grass Cutting, CCTV, and other much needed amenities and services, many of which are still funded by the IW Council in other Towns.

As you may know, we have consistently put forward proposals to save IW Funds (£450k+ on Social Care Consultants, £300k+ on PFI Consultants, £100k+ on Ventnor Harbour, £20k+ High Court Fees re school-parent, £40k+ lost planning case costs, and other measures that would save over £1 million) - our previous proposals, with the Music and Youth Services, Council Back office and Car Parks, have already saved over £1 million for the Authority.

We have also submitted our response to the consultation on Island Line - as we have consistently said, the retention of the line if vital to Shanklin, the Bay and the Island; there is a need for investment, which would help improve the viability and frequency of the service; and the voice of local residents need to be listened to now, and as part of future arrangements.

Recent information requests highlight revenue of £62,000 Shanklin Lift (2014); £31,000 Esplanade Car Park; £103,000 on-street Esplanade; £17,000 Spa Car Park; £91,000 Vernon Meadow Car Park; £9,000 Winchester House & Atherley Road Car Parks; Landguard Road £42,000; Hope Road £24,000; Orchardleigh Road £25,000; with income from Putting Green, Beach, and other concessions in excess of £20,000 (details from IWC pending).

COMMUNITY PROJECTS We took part in National Libraries Day at Shanklin Community Library, with the Island’s High Sheriff, and helped launch Book Bingo, and other projects to benefit the growing number of readers at the Library: the Town is fortunate to have the team of volunteers it has, and Maria and Michael’s organisation not only run a first class service, but also arranges a programme of activities, such as Theatre Trips, which benefit the Theatre and volunteers.

There was also a proposal to increase the Shanklin precept to ensure Toilets are kept open - but we will continue to argue for fair-treatment, especially when other Towns are receiving IW Council funding to maintain services such as Libraries, Theatre, possibly Toilets, and other community amenities: we believe this to be unfair and damaging to local communities.

The Town Council also saved the Local With Rev Tony Richards, and Shanklin RBL, we Authority over £500,000 a year by providing a commemorated February 17th 1943, the day when St Pauls Church was bombed and local 14

News Report for Shanklin continued... residents were killed and wounded. There are also plans to mark the Queen’s 90th Birthday in April, with a church service, a programme of community events, and some special projects involving local schools working with Sandown and Lake Councils, and other groups, we hope to keep costs down but ensure the occasion is celebrated. With Shanklin Green Town Volunteers, we are participating in Clean for the Queen, and a beach cleaning project; and with residents on Batts Road, and along the Brook, we met with Island Roads to try to address on-going flooding issues: since then a diver has cleared the tunnels along the brook, other works are planned, and a meeting in the Autumn being arranged to work on a permanent solution. We are also working to submit Southern England in Bloom and Seaside Awards, with a meeting with Southern Water planned to discuss bathing quality. On a personal note, with our wives, we went to Shanklin Theatre to see Stewart Francis, the first show since Chris, Rebecca and the Team upgraded the stage and performance areas: not just another fantastic evening’s entertainment, but the improvement to the amenity will benefit shows and performers for years to come. Thanks again to all that have been in touch with local issues and, with Town Council colleagues, we do listen and we will continue to take forward solutions where and if we can.
