Blossom Time... This time of the year is probably one of my favourites, especially seeing the blossoming trees which bring colour to every town and which is a sure sign that Autumn and Winter are gone and Spring and Summer are here. This month’s front cover was taken by Amanda Ellis who has captured the amazing blossom on her plum tree growing in her garden. Amanda moved to the Island over 25 years ago from London and immediately fell in love with Island life. Amanda suffers from a heart problem which has affected her health but her love of photography has kept her spirits up and when she is having a good day she travels around the Island by bus taking photos and on the other days she is happy to sit and enjoy her garden taking photos of the ever changing plants and trees and the visiting wildlife.

Dear Readers Welcome to the May issue of Island Magazines. Whilst writing this the sun is shining and the days are starting to warm up. The Island has sprung back into life and the tourists are on their way and seasonal businesses are now open. There are plenty of places to visit and things to do across the Island whether it’s a beach picnic, a country walk or visiting one of the many towns to mooch around and see some of the unique local shops. On pages 10 & 11 you will find ‘Dates for your Diary’ which includes details of events happening throughout May. This month’s issue is packed full of news and information and it’s also an ideal way to find local services offered by local businesses. Please take the opportunity to support them and let them know you saw them advertised here. We have been working with the IOW Cats Protection and some of their mature residents and you can find more information about this on page 8. I hope you all have a great May and enjoy the Bank Holidays. Until next month....

I hope last months recipe was a success for you and this time the Four Seasons Cookery Academy is treating us to a sweet treat (just in case you didn’t have enough chocolate over Easter). This recipe is for a Jaffa Cake and it sounds delicious. There are a couple of top tips at the bottom of the recipe to reduce calories and sugar intake which in turn means you can always have that extra slice without feeling guilty.

Adoption time Yes kittens are extremely cute and playful but then again so are these beautiful mature cats who desperately want to adopt some humans so they can have forever homes. They are saddened that they have been overlooked for the newer, younger models but these cats still know how to have a fun time and are well behaved and toilet trained... what more could you possibly want!!! They have so much to offer and still have lots of life in them and plenty of love to give that special person or family. Don’t delay, adopt today. Island Magazines are pleased to introduce these adorable adult cats who want to be given a chance. There are more on the website at www.isleofwight.cats.org.uk or pop in and meet them in person at 122, Marlborough Road, Ryde, PO33 1AW. They are open 11am - 4pm daily but closed on Tuesdays. This little poser is Mittens and she is 3 years old. She doesn’t want to share with other cats or dogs or young children as she wants to be the centre of attention. She is black and white and is always happy to let you play with her.

This handsome chappie is Thomas and he is simply adorable and these photos do not do him justice. He is happy to live with dogs, cats and children and has a lovely laid back attitude to life.

This white and tortoiseshell pussy is Twizzy. In real life she isn’t as stern as her photo portrays her. She doesn’t want to live with other cats and her mind isn’t made up yet as to whether or not she likes dogs. Ideally she would be suited to an older family. She is happy and loving and desperately wants her forever home.

My lords, ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce you to Princess... This beautiful tabby is 9 years old but certainly isn’t over the hill just yet. Princess wants her owners all to herself and isn’t happy to share with children, cats or dogs and would ideally be more suited to a more mature person/family.

This is Misty who is grey and white and is 15 years old. Don’t be put off by her age as she is a beautiful and friendly cat and still likes to go outdoors. She doesn’t want to live with other cats or dogs and would suit a more mature family. 8

Whisper is tortoiseshell and white. She is ever so pretty and has a lovely personality. She is looking for some mature humans to offer her a loving home, but she doesn’t want to live with other cats or dogs as she wants you all to herself.

Simple Repairs or a New Extension...

D. A. Builders are specialists in brickwork and repointing and Dave has over 16 years experience as a bricklayer. Over the last few years they have expanded to cover patios, driveways and fencing. Although based in Sandown they do cover the whole Island and are happy to offer free quotes on all jobs, whatever the size. Whether it be a simple garden wall repair or a new extension to give your home some extra space they will be able to help. Weathering can take its toll on brick buildings and can cause voids in the joints between masonry units, allowing the undesirable entrance of water which can significantly damage your property. To ensure this doesn’t happen call in the experts at D.A. Builders who will provide you with a quality repointing service and can bring a new lease of life to drab and tired brick work. They take pride in their work and ensure it is always finished to a high standard and they are fully insured and always turn up when they say they will. Professional, friendly and reliable are how some of their clients describe them. If you would like more information call D. A. Builders on 07731 844009 or 402039 or see their main advert.
