November 2015 Your Local Community Magazine

Dear Readers Welcome to the November issue of Island Magazines. I can hardly believe where the year has gone and I think it is now acceptable for me to be able to mention Christmas, because lets be honest it’s not far away now!!! The end of October sees Halloween and then the beginning of November its Guy Fawkes and then its a straight run to Christmas. There has been a change in the weather and there is now a chill in the air, personally I don’t mind this, its the rain I don’t like so lets keep our fingers crossed for a relatively dry November. This month I have been on a learning expedition and paid a visit to the Isle of Wight Bat Hospital and you can read all about it on page 8. There is still plenty to do on the Island and you’ll find details of Christmas Fayres, Guy Fawkes Parties and charity events listed in the Dates for your Diary on page 5. Please keep supporting the advertisers and using their services and please always let me know if you have any news you want to share. Until next month... Debbie

‘SANDOWN REPORT’, from Heather Humby email heather.humby@sky.com Tel: 402024 RETIREMENT OF Dr RANDALL After twenty eight years as a Sandown GP, Dr Peter Randall has retired from Sandown Medial Centre, having served the community of Sandown from 1987, when he replaced Dr Standish O’Grady at the former Melville Street Medical Centre.

social and economic change. Currently there are 116 coastal community teams in the UK, run on a government scheme to create coastal revival. Initial funding will be given for consultation and the forming of a plan.

Dr Randall also took over the GP training role, and in 1997 commenced work as a Medical Adviser to the Isle of Wight Health Authority, and subsequently as a member of the Isle of Wight Care Group and the Trust Board, and in 2001, became the GP lead for Cardiovascular Disease.

If you are interested, residents can obtain a What If? postcard, where you can draw, write, and give your ideas.

Dr Randall believes the greatest challenge in his career was the procurement of funding and logistics for developing the current Sandown Health Centre facilities. Gutters are an important part of a property, but they can easily get cluttered with leaves, twigs, moss and other items. By keeping them cleared you can ensure the free flowing of rain water. When guttering is blocked the rain water will over flow and will eventually cause damage to the structural elements of the building, water will erode the building material and can ultimately cause damage to the foundations, drainage system and the paving. Internally, damp will appear and create mold and mildew that is not only bad for the building but also your health.

Have you got Gutter Clutter?

Over flowing gutters can cause problems with damp, erosion & even subsidence. We can quickly clear guttering up to 12 meters from ground level, using the latest technology of the SkyVac Gutter Clearer Pictures provided to show the results. Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk Dear Residents With Christmas approaching we’d like to thank the organisers for their efforts putting together the programme of activity for the Fun Weekend of the 5th and 6th December - stretching from Regent Street to the Old Village and, hopefully, including a special ice skating feature. Working with the Coastal Community Team, there is also a planned event for Friday the 4th December, enabling residents to take part in the Bay project, helping shape projects for the New Year and longer term. NB We have already met with senior officers from the Department of Communities and Local Government, discussing possible future projects in the Bay. In addition, we are again working with Tina and the team at the Crab, with St Blasius Minister Tony Richards and Shanklin Town Brass Band, on our annual December Carol Concert.

Responder, Paul Horobin, who is working with the local NHS Ambulance Service to provide First Aid and support until the arrival of the Ambulance Service - the Town Council are working with the Ambulance service to provide additional defibrillator facilities in the Town, and with local groups to develop training. NB We have already submitted a grant application to provide a 24/7 facility outside of Falcon Cross Hall, near to Regent Street and the Bus Station. Also, the local Public Health Local Area Co-ordinator, Rich Lloyd, is in post and will be visiting local groups and organisations to help develop services and strengthen community networks.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin continued... With the Island’s Chamber of Commerce, we are also launching the shops/businesses grants programme where 16 grants of £250 are available each year for the next 3 years - details will be available through the Town Council and other outlets. PLANNING We have raised a number of concerns regarding recent planning applications, and have worked with IW Council Officers to ensure the views of local residents are fully taken into account before decisions are made - we are concerned that some decisions have been made by the Planning Authority, which are then overturned on appeal, resulting in considerable cost to the Council and developments that may not be as acceptable as they otherwise may have been. The Town Meeting is also planned to include discussion on the IW Council’s Area Action Plan, which should include areas that may be available to develop, and an indication of the number of future homes the Authority envisages being possible in the Bay - it is very important that local residents express their views and we ensure local opinion is heard. We are also planning, with St Blasius and other organisations, to arrange a commemoration for the Fire Personnel that died during the World War 2 Bombing Raid on the Town, on the 3rd January 1943, and, in addition to the church service, we hope to have a permanent tribute to those that died at the site of the bombing. THANK YOU And we’d like to finish by saying thank you to all of the individuals and groups that have been in contact with us, and our fellow Town Councillors, to raise issues of concerns (and

positive comments) and help address the problems the Town is faced with - we are very fortunate that Shanklin is a very proactive Town, and the sense of community has enabled public services to be protected and developed, thank you for making a difference.
