ART THERAPY
Dear Readers Welcome to the October issue of Island Magazines. As you know I always like to give a mention about the weather but really I’m not sure what can be said about it this month. There have been some nice days at the beginning of September but then I am also hearing that some people have put the heating on already!!! To me October represents Autumn leaves and Halloween and the nights drawing in but I really don’t feel that way whilst writing this but who knows what is in store for us in the next couple of weeks.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk We like to start our monthly report by congratulating all Shanklin Students, and their families, for their successes in the recent GCSE and A level exams, we know many local residents that have secured University Places, apprenticeships and employment, and wish them well for their futures. There has also been some outstanding personal and business successes, including: Fran Henderson, from the Crab, on her winning Old English Inns Employee of the Year nationally - thoroughly deserved recognition and a credit to Tina and the Team.
SHANKLIN RAILWAY As many residents know there has been much debate on the future of the line, and we continue to work with the Town Council to ensure the continuation of this vital link - the efforts of Ray, Chris, David and others has highlighted the need for the local community to be fully informed and involved in the future plans for the service. We have met with a major international train operating company and, once the franchise process commences, have committed to engage with local residents to help shape their plans - we hope to meet with other providers and ensure a similar commitment, as well as a wider community consultation event for Shanklin residents and all Islanders. Hopefully, by the time of a future Town Meeting, we will have more to Report.

Thanks also to all those involved in Shanklin in Bloom, and to the Legion for hosting a really enjoyable evening, as well as for all of the individuals and groups that took part - with 2016 being Garden Isle, the effort of Shanklin residents is greatly appreciated by visitors and locals alike. 4
We voted against proposals to close an Island Fire Station, and we raised these concerns at the meeting of the Full Council and asked how these proposals were developed without any consultation; as well as proposals to cut services to vulnerable people without any plans to mitigate their impact
Monthly News Report for Shanklin continued... REMEMBRANCE DAY This year’s service is at 11am Sunday 8th November 2015, with Shanklin Town Brass Band involved again, with the Town Council and Royal British Legion working together to appropriately mark the occasion. This follows the 75th Anniversaries of VE and VJ Days, the Commemoration of the Battle of Britain, and recognition of local residents that are honoured in local churches and on the War Memorial - we are planning further commemorations in 2016.
Hopefully, we will have also arranged a couple of smaller local meetings regarding planning matters, car parking, the new waste contract and other issues of local concern - we hope by enabling discussions between residents and appropriate officers a way forward can be agreed for the benefit of all parties.
Many thanks again for residents for contacting us and keeping us, and the Town Council, fully informed of concerns and comments - we know that cuts in IW Council services will impact locally and, with the Town Council, we will continue to work to ensure In addition, following grant funding, the Town Shanklin is treated fairly and that we do all Council has commissioned 8 flower troughs that we can to protect local amenities (nb we for the Town Square, and officially unveiled are working on a Coastal Revival Fund Bid). them to commemorate the Queen becoming the longest reigning monarch on September 9th - we are already working on plans for a Jon Gilbey and Richard Priest Bay celebration of the Queen’s 90th Birthday (Shanklin Town and County Councillors) in 2016.

Laser Beautylite is a new unisex laser hair removal and skin rejuvenation service operating from SmartHealth Chiropractic Clinic in Freshwater. Owned and managed by Suzanne Ravelle, Laser BeautyLite uses one of the latest and safest, pain-free, laser light treatment technologies currently available. Super Hair Removal (SHR) involves using very low frequencies of pulsated light to deliver laser treatment for hair removal and destroy unwanted hair and treat a whole variety of skin conditions without the risk of light being absorbed by surrounding areas. It only relies partially on targeting the pigmentation in the hair and skin conditions and works by delivering a low energy pulsated light, gradually, through a series of repetitive shots ‘glided’ across the area. It achieves the same effects as traditional lasers and IPL treatments but in a gentler manner and is therefore painless. It is suitable for all skin types and hair colours, including tanned, grey and blondes and is delicate enough on tough facial hair removal treatments as well as most other body areas. Light Treatment Therapy isn’t just good at getting rid of unwanted hair. It’s equally efficient with dealing with quite a number of skin conditions and cosmetic skin treatments such as; acne reduction, skin pigmentation, vascular lesions and wrinkles and fine lines. Suzanne intends to make laser hair removal and laser skin rejuvenation services more accessible by providing her services at prices she hopes you’ll find are much more affordable then has traditionally been the case. ART THERAPY
I hope you like this months front cover. Some of you will know exactly what it means and for the others I’d like to welcome you to the world of Art Therapy. Art Therapy is exactly what it says it is… creative therapeutic colouring for grown ups. Remember when you were a child and you were given a colouring book! It’s exactly the same as that… you get to bring a picture to life. It’s your picture/book and you can do what you want. You can use pencils, crayons, felt tips, gel pens, the list goes on. You can use whatever colours you want and if you don’t want to stay within the lines then you don’t have too as this is the beauty of Art Therapy!!! I have the Secret Garden colouring book which is combined with an inky treasure hunt and features pictures containing birds, rabbits, insects and animals hidden amongst swirly trees, beautiful gardens and other magical wonders. I can find myself engrossed in colouring for hours at a time or sometimes I can just pick it up and shade a few flowers. There is no set time and you can make the rules up as you go along. Its relaxing and rewarding and you can take it with you wherever you go and its not expensive either. These books are designed to give us a break from the manic world that we live in. Feeling stressed or has your day been frustrating, perhaps you are recuperating, or maybe you just need some you time… whatever the reason Art Therapy could be just what you need. You will find many local shops will be stocking these colouring books or you can order them online like I did from Amazon.

‘SANDOWN REPORT’, from Heather Humby email heather.humby@sky.com Tel: 402024 REGENERATION OF SANDOWN. At long last there seems to be signs that Sandown is starting to see the green shoots of regeneration appear. Savoy Flats are now being demolished, and Sandown Hotel undergoing refurbishment. The former Zanies night club area on the western Esplanade, is also being demolished. The former Bailey’s shop, has been purchased, and is being converted into two shops, and they are expected to open in the near future, which will certainly help to regenerate the lower end of the high Street. Obviously there are buildings on prominent positions that still await attention, however, there are certainly good reasons to be more optimistic for the future of our town. COMMUNITY BUS SERVICE - This has undergone changes. Money required for the running of the service will now be taken from the Concessionary Bus Pass Fund, and those using the bus will have to show their passes on boarding, and in addition a donation of at least a £1 must be offered on each journey. The money is required for the training of drivers and insurance. AWARDS FOR THE BAY CE PRIMARY SCHOOL COMMUNITY KIDS - The Community Kids group has been very successful in gaining an award from SW Trains for the best kept railway station. (Sandown) They have also been nominated for five awards in the South of England for their efforts. Currently the group are assisting The Ability Dogs4Young People charity by collecting milk bottle tops, used stamps and spent printer ink cartridges, as are also supporting their twinning school in Moldavia by collecting books and cuddly toys, which are then transported by lorry to
Moldavia. If you feel you could help with any of the above items, please contact Bill Wyke tel: 405471 or email wwwyke@ tiscali.co.uk. SANDOWN HELP CENTRE At the recent Sandown Forum meeting, Concern was expressed over the proposed closure of the Isle of Wight Council Sandown Help Centre, currently situated at The Height’s, Sandown. The office covers the area from Ventnor through to Brading, and provides essential information and assistance for many residents. The closure will mean that those requiring help and advice on a range of services, will now have to travel to either Ryde or Newport. In view of the many objections to the scheme, local County Councillors have been requested to ask that the decision be reconsidered. FUTURE OF 16+ EDUCATION. A new unit, catering for 350 students for students from Sandown and Ryde areas is to be created adjacent to Sandown Academy. SANDOWN HONOUR WALK. Anyone wishing to purchase a tile to place on the Sandown Honour Walk, and requiring details, should contact the Sandown Community. E
Resin Stone Overlaying is effectively surfacing over your existing block-paved, tarmac or concrete driveway, path or patio. Resin Overlays provide a highly cost-effective and quick way of replacing the surface in the Garden or on the Driveway. As well as being aesthetically pleasing and highly durable, the benefits include: Being both solvent and odour free, during and after application - Restricting growth of weeds - Eliminating loose stones Being environmentally friendly - Compliance with Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
How is it done?
We initially prepare the existing surface using a high-pressure jet washer system and primer, before applying your chosen resin stone combination. The overlays typically take 1-2 days with minimal inconvenience.
