Dear Readers Welcome to the October issue of Island Magazines. Mention the word October and I automatically think of crisp Autumn leaves, cooler weather, sweaters and boots!!! Yet whilst writing this, the sun is shining and we have had a good few sunny days leading up to this point. The Island is nearly empty of visitors and although it is nice having them here it’s nice to get the Island back to ourselves. In this months issue there is an appeal to all readers for your help with the Rotary Christmas Shoebox Appeal to send presents to disadvantaged children and you will find full details of this on pages 8 and 9. The ‘Dates for your Diary’ is on page 10 and although not quite as busy as the summer months there are still interesting events happening across the Island. I hope you enjoy this issue and please keep using the services of our advertisers and if you have any news or events happening in the future please feel free to send me the details. Until next month. Gutter Clutter We are now into Autumn and the leaves will be falling from the trees and they could potentially be falling into and blocking your gutters which in turn could make your insurance null and void as most insurers now claim that gutter clearing falls under general maintenance and is something that should be looked at regularly. When your guttering is blocked the rain water will over flow and will eventually cause damage to the structural elements of the building, water will erode the building material and can ultimately cause damage to the foundations, drainage system and the paving. Internally, damp will appear and create mold and mildew that is not only bad for the building but also your health.

Having your gutter cleared once a year will significantly reduce the risk of any blockages caused by leaves, moss or any other debris. This means that the water from your roof will flow directly to the drainage system and away from your property reducing the risks of damage to your property. Island Garden Timber Care offer the latest technology in gutter clearing saying goodbye to costly scaffolding and ladders their hi tech powered vacuum with portable video camera allows them to survey and clean gutters from ground level. Island Garden Timber Care also offer a patio, path and driveway cleaning and can get them looking like new again and they can also apply an appropriate high grade sealer which will make future maintenance much easier. Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07854 083229 Jon 07964 869338 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk We are in the process of finalising arrangements for a Public Meeting at Shanklin Theatre, to discuss plans for 2017/18, including possible renovation and rebuilding of 2 Public Toilets (Falcon Cross and Tower Cottage): we have received much public feedback, which we greatly appreciate, on the improvements in Service since the Town Council took on the service (including flexibility of opening, several deepcleans, re-painting, etc), and suggestions on future improvements.

and business, as well as attracting visitors and local residents, and highlights the contribution made by a team of dedicated and committed volunteers.

Hopefully, the meeting will also provide opportunities to discuss other Town projects, such as retaining our Seaside Award, environmental initiatives, maintaining our green spaces and public realm, and several initiatives which have applied for grant funding (including History Projects, and Coastal Community Proposals). NB We also hope to have the latest news on the £800,000 Lift Bridge Capital Project.

Congratulations to Richard Wilson on winning the 2016 Prone Small Bore Rifle Championship at Bisley, is a member at Shanklin, and was a former pupil at Gatten & Lake School: our thanks also go to John and Paul, at the Shanklin Club, for organising the recent inaugural Shooters V Archers competition – it was great success and will become an annual event.

TOWN COUNCIL FUNDED PROJECTS Parents of students at St Blasius Primary Academy have contacted us to comment on the support given by the Town Council to maintain the School Crossing Patrol Service, and the continued efforts to improve Road Safety in and around the Town: the Town Council previously highlighted the need for the one way system by the School, and for 20 mph limits outside by St Blasius and the new Gatten & Lake School in Oaklyn Gardens.

CONGRATULATIONS Well done to Jack, Matt, Andy and the Shanklin Cricket Club Team on their success this season – we know how difficult it is to run a club, especially with off-Island commitments, but their success is a credit to all involved in the club.

We would also like to thank the Methodist Church in Regent Street, who have just installed a defibrillator, for their continued support of projects benefitting the community; and this new amenity is in addition to those in the Theatre, on the Esplanade, in the Community Library, and in Shanklin Conservative Club.

FUTURE PROJECTS We are continuing to take forward issues of concern with local residents, including the We have also received positive comments Town’s Allotments; one or two outstanding about the on-going support provided to waste collection problems; the need to Shanklin Theatre, in particular match funding implement Traffic Regulation Orders that Shanklin Rotary Clubs’ donation to the were discussed 3 years ago; ongoing liaison Window Project – the continued success of with Island Roads regarding their Shanklin the Theatre benefits the local economy programme of works; and ideas to support the shopping centre. 4

News Report for Shanklin continued... Plans are also in place for the 2016 Remembrance Day Service; and we are working on other commemorative events for 2017 and 2018 (the Centenary of the end of WW1). The Town Council are also supporting the Christmas Funday, and will be supporting the Carol Service, Christmas Tree event, and other seasonal activities which Shanklin is fortunate to have. In conclusion, we would like to thank again all those residents that contact us with comments and concerns. We try to secure solutions where we can and try to get clarification where we can’t get the outcome that people want: we do appreciate how frustrating things get, but also understand

that only by raising issues, progress and improvements can be made. Regards Jon Gilbey & Richard Priest Shanklin Mayor and IW Councillor Town and IW Councillor
