Your Local Community Magazine

Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of the October issue. Whilst writing this, its a tad blustery outside and I am seeing my hopes of an Indian Summer slipping away. I think I need to accept that the weather is likely to stay more suited to Autumn. I’m certainly not complaining as I think our Island is beautiful whatever the season. On pages 18 and 19 you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ and there is still lots happening on the Island and if you have an event taking place in the next couple of months please get in contact so we can share the details. You can read the story behind this months stunning front cover on page 15. I hope you enjoy this issue and please keep using the services of our advertisers as there are some great local businesses out there. I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk The renovation of Falcon Cross Toilets has already generated lots of positive comments from residents and visitors to the Town, and the Town Council, with residents, can begin to consider options for the use of the rest of the site – the Town Council has invested almost £150,000 in the projects, with the added security already highlighting some anti-social behaviour from one or two users, and we are grateful to residents for reporting this. We’ve also started the installation of new decorative lighting across the Town, with work on the Esplanade already completed, and further lights are planned for Regent Street, the Old Village and High Street – we are guided by Island Roads and the need to ensure the lighting can be used for Christmas, as well as summer months. The Town Council welcomed the support of residents at the Public Meeting in December and took forward the projects proposed at the meeting, with the results benefitting Residents and Visitors for years to come – usage of the toilets have already exceeded predictions and the Council are reviewing options for the other Toilets. SUCCESSES Congratulations to Shanklin Bowler Trevis Meller who became the English Men’s Junior Champion at Leamington Spa last month – continuing his successful development, and a credit to his family and home club. Competition successes also to Junior Sides at Shanklin Cricket Club and Football Club, and this reflects the commitment of 4

voluntary coaches, dedication that is being recognised in a forthcoming DVD being produced by the Sports Council. Former Shanklin footballer Maggie Murphy also helped organise an all women match on Mount Kilimanjaro in support of the Equal Playing Field Organisation, and it has been nominated for inclusion in the next edition of the Guinness Book of Records as the only match to have taken place at this altitude; and another former player, Gemma Woodford (FA Women’s Premier League, Division One Player of the Year 2016), has been signed on by Southampton Ladies FC and wish her good luck in her career. Thanks also to our Pistol Club on organising the recent shooters versus archers competition, and on their successes at Bisley and inclusion of members in the Olympic Squad; and congratulations to the sailors from the Sailing Club on their regional success: again a credit to all involved in the clubs, and the support by coaches and volunteers. FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS Arrangements are already underway for this years’ Remembrance Day Service, scheduled for Sunday November 12th, following the RBL Festival of Remembrance at the Theatre on Friday 10th, with tickets available from the Theatre and RBL Shanklin. The Town Council are also considering options to improve Tower Cottage Gardens, following the investment in the Toilets and overall upgrade in the site and

Monthly News Report for Shanklin continued surrounding area – the potential benefit for the town is well recognised and would complement the heritage and character of the Old Village. Investment in the renovation of the Town Clock should be finalised, together with the overall improvements in the United Reform Church – the Town Council are committed to this and are awaiting clarification from the IW Council, owners of the Clock following war time bombing. Congratulations also to Anne Springman and all involved in the 200th anniversary of Shanklin Chine – they have organised a memorable summer of celebratory events which culminate in a special event.

Shanklin Community Library are also planning a 30th Commemoration of the Storm of 1987 which saw the destruction of the Pier and extensive damage across the Town, and the Island: and this is part of a wider history project with Shanklin VYCC and other local youth groups. We hope in the next edition to outline plans for Christmas events, as well as the other developments in the Town, involving local community groups and organisations – the above headlines serve to highlight how much activity happens in Shanklin and how much the community owes to volunteers. Gutter Clearing

As we head into Autumn, the leaves will be falling from the trees and could potentially be falling into, and blocking your gutters which in turn could make your house insurance null and void as most insurers now state that gutter clearing falls under general maintenance and should be looked at regularly. When your guttering is blocked, rain water will over flow and will eventually cause damage to the structural elements of the building, water will erode the building material and can ultimately cause damage to the foundations, drainage system and the paving. Internally, damp will appear and create mold and mildew. Having your gutters cleared once a year will significantly reduce the risk of any blockages caused by leaves, moss or any other debris. Dazzle External Cleaning offer the latest technology in gutter clearing saying goodbye to costly scaffolding and ladders their hi tech powered vacuum with portable video camera which allow them to survey and clean gutters from ground level. Dazzle External Cleaning also offer soft washing and pressure washing or all external surfaces including cladding, render, patios and roofs. Don’t Get Stressed About It! By Jessica Garbett How often do you find yourself with a busy day and no time to stop as you balance competing demands on your time? All the while your phone keeps beeping at you with texts, emails and Facebook updates demanding attention. Familiar? Stress – or more correctly how we react to stress – is an increasing cause of ill health. It’s a vicious circle, as we respond to stresses our Sympathetic Nervous System – known as Flight or Fight - ramps up and delivers Cortisol and Adrenalin, both of which act as stimulants to the Nervous System, leading it to respond with more of the same until our body approaches overload. Meanwhile our Immune System is compromised, our digestion sluggish and our body is on an exhausting constant state of alert. The key to managing the stress cycle is a strong Parasympathetic Nervous System – known as Rest and Digest - to bring the body back into a state of balance as stresses pass, by dampening the Sympathetic Nervous System. Unfortunately when we live busy lives this response becomes weak, stoking the vicious circle. A mind body practice like Yoga is ideally placed to help restore balance in the Nervous System so both branches are working optimally and the body manages stress loads and recovery. If you are someone who feels stress is getting on top of you at times, then why not book into one of my local yoga classes this autumn and see if I can help you out?

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown As I settle into my role as your town and county councillor, I am becoming involved in more events and organisations that promote our beautiful island. It’s been a busy summer including a preview visit to the new Asda store, a tour of the Southern Water plant at Sandown, a meeting with the team at Dinosaur Isle, a visit to The Needles Park, a meeting with the district steward of Island Roads and attending a Civic Service at Newport Minster. There are many ways that we can all contribute to the life of Sandown. I know that time is precious, but a simple kind act can have a massive effect and need not involve a huge commitment of either time or resources. We already have many residents who give of their time for the benefit of our community. If you have a particular project or request and you would like my support, please get in touch. I was very happy to be at the licensing of our new Priest-in-charge of St Paul’s, Shanklin and Christ Church, Sandown, Mark Williams. I warmly welcome Mark, Sarah, Rosie, Leila and Malachi and wish them a great start to their new life on the island and as a part of our island community. Despite the weather, I’ve enjoyed the carnival season and appreciate all of the hard work that goes into their organisation. I also attended the launch of the IW Pride event for 2018 at Dimbola Lodge, which will be held on Saturday 21st July, 2018. The second IW Pride

promises to be a great event celebrating our island diversity. As part of my role on the Sandown Town Council Environment Committee, I’m now researching designs, options and costings for the refurbishment of St John’s Road, Eastern Gardens and Yaverland toilets to present to the committee. Once the costings are known, we’ll be looking at funding options. I know that the current state of our public toilets is a big concern to residents and hope to be able to make improvements in the future. We’re also looking at some temporary measures in the interim as any improvements will take time to implement. Each month I will focus on a particular ward issue. This month it has been parking and thank you to everyone who has contacted me with their concerns. I’ve raised the issues with Island Roads and will be looking at ways of addressing the issues. This issue is ongoing so please continue to let me know of the issues that you’re facing. If there is a particular area of concern that you have, please let me know and I’ll look into it. I can’t promise to find solutions to all of the issues, but I will listen to you and do everything I can to resolve any problems where possible. Please do contact me by phone, email or via my Facebook page. Thank you for putting your trust in me.

Hare Today Gone Tomorrow... Except this isn’t the case with Nick Edwards and his hares which he continues to frequently photograph following a distribution survey conducted by the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society. Nick took up the challenge of locating a stable colony of hares to study and photograph at dawn and dusk on a friendly farm in Cowes. Nick has very kindly allowed Island Magazines to use one of his prints on the front cover and choosing the best hare picture from his vast collection is nearly one of the hardest tasks I have had to date.
