Welcome to the September issue and thank you for picking up a copy. The school summer holidays are drawing to a close but lets hope it doesn’t mean that summer is over... I feel positive that we may have an ‘indian summer’ and let’s hope the warm days continue through to the end of September or even October. This months issue is packed with news and information and a big ‘shout out’ to all budding authors to check out the competition advertised on the back cover. Saturday the 23rd September is “Isle of Wight Day”. It’s a time when the whole community is encouraged to celebrate everything that is good about the Island. There are events happening in towns, communities and villages and you will find a full list of events at www.isleofwightday. com and on pages 18 and 19 you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’, which gives information on events happening throughout the whole month. I hope you all have a wonderful September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Happy Birthday to The Liquidator Since opening their doors 2 years ago, The Liquidator has grown in size, is holding more stock than ever and has just taken over a large contract which will see a great range of furniture, tools and DIY items coming to their Newport premises very shortly. The Liquidator works alongside ex-catalogue stores and takes delivery of their stock to be sold at competitive prices. Redundant stock, deleted lines and goods with damaged packaging can be found in their showroom. All the items are new and range from pictures, mirrors, sofas, seating, furniture to shelving and laundry baskets. They have recently taken a delivery of sofas from Homebase and Argos and have a great range of items from Laura Ashley. All their stock are limited pieces and the stock turns around quickly and the best advice owner Tony can give is “if you see it and want it make sure you buy it there and then, because the next time you come in it will probably be gone” Based at 16 Pyle Street, Newport, PO30 1JW, they are open Monday to Saturday from 9am – 5pm. They now accept all credit cards including American Express and also offer an Island wide delivery service. 1 person delivery is £10 and 2 person delivery is £20 anywhere on the Island. They also do stock clearance for retail businesses that are closing down and Tony is happy to come and discuss your requirements. Keep up to date with their new stock deliveries by following them on Facebook. 4

Report from Sandown Town & County Councillor Debbie Andre. Tel 07948 757977 Email:- debbieandre4sandown@gmail.com debbieandre4sandown This month I have been actively working to represent you both within the Sandown community and on island wide issues. I rarely have an evening at home, but am really enjoying being able to engage fully with our island community, both at a local level and to have a voice on issues that affect us as an island. At a local level, I have attended Town Council meetings, a Sandown Community Partnership meeting and a Sandown Forum meeting amongst others. As reported in the last issue, I have been researching the various options available both for interim improvements and more long term solutions to our public toilets in Sandown. I recently visited the toilet refurbishment project at Tower Gardens in Shanklin and met with the contractors. I will be liaising with the town clerk to see how we can work together to make improvements and am grateful for her help. It’s great to see that the plans for the former Zanies site have now been submitted. I would urge you to visit the council planning website www.iwight.com/planning to see all the developments planned for our area. I have been talking to local business owners to see how I can best support them and help with the issues that they face as they continue to provide valued services to our town.

At County Level, I have been raising the profile of Sandown by attending various events and joining several committees. I recently attended a regeneration conference that was held at Cowes Yacht Haven. I had the opportunity to network with many people directly involved in the regeneration of the island and gain a greater insight into the possibilities that exist to transform Sandown into a great destination in which to live, work, play and visit. I am now a member of the South Wight Health and Wellbeing Forum which is a group of representatives from South Wight town and parish councils, which meets roughly every six weeks. The main aim of the forum is to coordinate and lead community input into locality management of health and wellbeing services in South Wight and to look at a more integrated approach to our health services in this area. We usually have a couple of speakers at every meeting from different organisations within island healthcare which has been very useful to give a greater understanding of how all our services work together.

I am now the spokesperson for Education for the Island Independent Group and have this month been contacted by the BBC and IOW Radio and had my comments published on island media. It’s quite a challenge and responsibility as I need to be able to I have attended an excellent series of training research the news item and give an informed response to a very tight timescale, but I have sessions learning about the role and duties a team of experienced Island Independent of a town councillor and, following on from councillors to advise me for which I’m very this, I will be attending two chairmanship grateful. training courses later this year. 6

Report from Councillor Debbie Andre continued. On a lighter note, I was delighted to walk my first two carnivals, getting slightly wet in the process. I would urge you to get involved, new members are made very welcome. We meet throughout the year to plan and fundraise. I don’t hold surgeries as such, but I am happy to be contacted by phone, email or via my Facebook page and will meet up with residents in my ward to discuss issues that are important to you. Thank you for putting your trust in me.

A Holly Maslen Front Cover

Here at Island Magazines we have been very lucky to have the wonderfully creative Holly Maslen allow us to use one of her designs on the front cover. I’m sure you will agree that her pen and ink designs are beautiful and she had many to choose from and this one just caught our eye and was just perfect for us. Holly has worked for many years as a marine artist but decided to go back to her childhood style of pen and ink work, drawing and designing exclusively in black and white. Over the last five years she has worked on many projects including sixteen murals for the Isle of Wight Zoo, a mural in Sloane Square for fashion designer Charlotte Taylor and an exhibition of drawings at Freud in London to accompany the publication of her illustrated book “Escargot Masquerade & Other Stories”. Smaller scale projects have included t-shirt designs for skate company Wight Trash and her own scarves and pocket squares sold via the international Japanese designer Masato. In 2016 Holly opened a gallery in Bembridge for six months, showcasing the work of over 30 Island Artists and now runs another gallery in Bembridge called Mini Big Art on Embankment Road which is open 12-4pm Wednesday through to Sunday. After a break of a year Holly has started designing again in her customary black and white style and will be bringing out a range of products next month. To find out more about her work, and the gallery, have a look at her website www.hollyvmaslen.com

Monthly News Report for Shanklin. Richard 07471 471960 Jon 07973 860086 Email. priest.gilbey@live.co.uk The renovation of Tower Cottage Gardens has already generated lots of positive comments from residents and visitors to the Old Village, and work on Falcon Cross is well underway – the Town Council has invested almost £150,000 in the projects, as well as securing improvements to Tower Cottage Gardens, which should improve public enjoyment of the green space in future years. Both public toilets will be fully accessible, with special features for disabled users, amenities for parents and babies, as well as energy efficient initiatives: in addition, the toilets will have charging facilities to help offset running costs, and the sites will also provide an opportunity for income generation, for example interest has already been expressed regarding a potential kiosk. We’d like to thank the public for their understanding of the amount of work that has gone into these works, causing a slight delay in the opening schedule, and for the comments received, including introduction of CCTV to reduce potential vandalism, improvements to walkways and lighting, and upgrades to the area around Falcon Cross Toilets. WELCOMES Together with many local parishioners, we were privileged to participate in the Installation of the new Priest-in Charge at St Saviours on the Cliff (with the Good Shepherd, Lake) by the Bishop of 14

Portsmouth, and we welcomed Father David Lawrence-March to Shanklin, and look forward to working with him in the future. We also welcomed Rev Mark Williams at his installation as Priest-inCharge at St Paul’s (with Christ Church, Sandown), and his arrival coincides with the renovation of the church and surrounding grounds, and buildings. CONGRATULATIONS Well done to local referee Sean Phillips on being one of the match officials at the Fulham Vs Wolfsburg match – Sean has been involved in local sport for many years, and this appointment is a major moment in his refereeing career. Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre recently received the Green Flag Community award for the voluntary work of their team of helpers, and their involvement with the Green Town’s Initiative – Bridget, Christine, Terry, Jean, Lesley and all involved more than deserve this national recognition. National Judges from South East England in Bloom visited the Town and praised the efforts of residents to provide a floral welcome to visitors and residents – they highlighted the Town Council’s support of green projects, help towards community events such as the as the Carnival and Regatta, and the investment in the Public Toilets. They also highlighted the success of Shanklin in Bloom, supported by the Town

Council, and the dedicated work of all involved. Shanklin Football Club, approaching its’ 130th Anniversary, has introduced 2 new youth sides, and has received a grant from the Town Council, as well as local Rotary, to reinstate the toilets – which will help with the range of tournaments and teams now using the County Ground: Macdonald’s have also donated a kit, and the club has attracted a range of sponsors to support the increased number of teams.

fouling: with the Town Council, we have worked with residents to ensure ‘robust’ enforcement where offences have occurred and perpetrators identified. And we would again like to thank all involved in making this Summer another memorable one, Regattas and Carnivals, Band Concerts and the programme of entertainment at the Theatre, Fetes and Fayres, a host of sports (we said we’d mention Jack and Matt @ SCC), new shops arriving in the Town, and the continuing commitment of groups such as Shanklin Library with things like the Summer Reading Challenge – we are all truly lucky to live in Shanklin.

Shanklin Voluntary Youth Club have also received a grant to run a series of ‘Nerf War’ evenings for local young people – a recent taster evening attracted almost 200 young people – and this promises to be a Regards big attraction when the Club re-opens this Mayor Jon Gilbey & Richard Priest month.

We’d also like to thank Amey, the Council and Island Roads for the new Green Man Rubbish Removal is a fully recycling facilities licensed and insured independent waste disposal service for both domestic and being introduced commercial properties. across the Town, the improvements From regular black bags to large bulky items taken plus a large free fill yourself bag to parking meters for your green garden waste which can then be (and new zoning booked in to be emptied when you wish. arrangements which Fully licensed with the Environment Agency - Registration we proposed), and number CB/LE5041UJ. 15 years experience in the waste the work of Sam (the disposal industry.
