Walking through those doors was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, there is no age restriction and everybody is welcome. You can find details of the Guild in your area on the above advert, and you can also call us to chat and even meet with you before you come to your first Guild. As I said at the beginning of this article, the hardest part was walking through the door and if you don’t feel confident to do it alone, I will walk with you.
Lake - Lions Community Centre, 2nd Thursday at 10.30am
The Townswomen’s Guild have made it their mission to reduce loneliness by encouraging women who feel isolated and lonely to get involved with their local guild. By becoming a member, you will discover the true gift of friendship and that being around like-minded individuals will help to combat feelings of isolation and loneliness.

There are currently nine guilds on the Island and each one holds a monthly meeting which normally includes a speaker giving us insights into various activities on the island, for example we have had the head gardener from Osborne House and more recently a talk on Film and TV made on the Island. We are a non-religious and non-political guild and are open to like-minded ladies who want to meet new people, have fun, and make new friends. So, what else do we do, well ‘Lunchers club’ is a regular at all the guilds, we generally go somewhere different on a monthly basis. Some guilds have walking clubs which involve stopping for coffee, cake and sometimes lunch. Book reading, crafts, flower arranging, gardening, theatre/cinema clubs and we’ve even been known to go on a holiday or two. We regularly have garden parties, coffee mornings and ploughman’s lunches. In fact, a lot of our activities involve some sort of eating or drinking tea!!
Wootton - Methodist Church, Station Rd, 3rd Thursday at 2.00pm
If you would like to talk to someone before coming along, please ring 01983 759350 and we can chat and even meet with you before you come to a guild. We meet monthly and have nine Townswomen’s Guilds at various locations and times across the island
We welcome you to come along to a no obligation meeting, to find out more. A warm and friendly welcome is guaranteed.
The First Step is the Hardest By Suzie Thurgood Why join TG? Well, I can’t answer for you, but I can tell you why I joined... I had recently retired and moved to the Island and didn’t know a soul. I saw an advert for Townswomen’s Guild and thought I would give it a try. The hardest thing was to walk through the door, but I really had no need to worry as I was immediately approached and introduced to others and the rest is, as they say, history.
Are you new to the Island, recently retired or just interested in fun, laughter, lunches, walking, outings or something different?
Then TG could well be for you and is a great opportunity to meet new friends and like-minded ladies in your area.

September and I look
How can we be heading into September already? I honestly do not know where this year has gone! If you are a regular reader of this community publication you may remember that the last few years, the September issue front cover has always been dedicated to anything tractor themed. This is partly because I have always had a love of tractors and secondly September is harvesting season and we are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or to the frustration of many but to my delight stuck behind one in traffic.
For once I am not going to make any comments on the weather... it is what it is, and we just as it comes and, on that note, I wish all a wonderful forward to catching up again next
I will be showing my age here, but I remember years ago when I was growing up, I looked forward to helping load the bales on to the trailer which in those times were just held on with a bit of rope and then sitting on the top bouncing about as we went along the road. Back then, health and safety wasn’t an issue and at times there could be a few of us on the top of the stack and if any of the bales did fall on the road, then we just stopped and picked them up. In those days everything was just a bit more laid back. There wouldn’t have been moaning, honking of horns or even road rage when this happened, just acceptance that your journey may be delayed by a few minutes. Imagine how this would be greeted on Coppins Bridge now!!

Many elderly or ill pet owners worry about their ability to provide appropriate care for their loved pets and rather than them having to rehome what could be their only companion, The Cinnamon Trust with the help of their amazing volunteers can step in and provide the help that is needed, such as walking the dog for a housebound owner, cleaning bird cages and litter trays and even foster pets while owners need hospital or hospice care.
By volunteering you will be supporting the dogs by providing regular exercise to keep them in tip top condition and you will also be taking away a worry from the owner who will no doubt have enough on their plate

The Cinnamon Trust is national charity and a much-needed source here on the island. Their objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. They work in partnership with people over retirements age and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness to offer all kinds of free pet care.
The views and opinions expressed by contributors and advertisers are their own and do not reflect the views of the Editor or Island Magazines unless stated otherwise. Island Magazines reserves the right to refuse or alter material where necessary.
The Cinnamon Trust are looking for volunteers to help island pet owners. They cover the whole island and therefore need volunteers from all areas. They currently have pet owners in Newport and Cowes who are in need of immediate help and support for their beloved dogs who love a good walk.
There is no statutory guidance from the government on a school’s uniform policy. Any such decision rests with the board of governors of the school. However, at the time of writing, it’s only Britain, Malta and Ireland where state schools routinely adopt school uniform. Please let me know your thoughts on this and join the debate.

This promises to be a spectacular event and will be a showcase for our beautiful island putting us on the international stage. Our children and young people start a new academic year this month. With the massive hike in the cost of living and most of us, but especially families, struggling to stay out of debt, how do residents feel about the need for school uniforms?
Rolling road closure approx. start time
Cars left on the course will need to be removed in the interests of safety and will be relocated to a safe place nearby.

September 11, 2001, changed the shape of the world forever. It was on this fateful day that the worst terrorist attack on US soil happened when four commercial airliners were hijacked. Two of the planes were flown straight into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre, and another was crashed into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crash-landed into a field in Pennsylvania after the passengers of the flight attempted to regain control of the plane from the terrorists.
September Facts and Events
September is graced with having two different birth flowers. The two flowers are the vibrant aster and the beautiful yet resilient morning glory. The significance of both flowers is actually very similar, with the aster being said to represent love, while the morning glory represents affection.

On September 30, 1955, the American cultural icon and famed movie star James Dean had his life cut short by a car crash in California at the early age of 24. While his acting career was all too short, he is still heralded as an incredibly influential actor, especially for his role in Rebel Without a Cause.
September only has one birthstone though, but with a stone like this, who needs another? The stone is the majestically vivid sapphire. With its deep blue tones, this precious stone is said to represent the wisdom of the gods, purity, and trust. Sapphires were once worn to protect the wearer from both poisoning and other evils.
September was originally the seventh month of the ancient Roman calendar, and as such it was named Septem, which translates into “the seventh month”. It wasn’t until 451 BC that the months of January and February were added to the calendar, making September the ninth Septembermonth.heralds the beginning of Autumn in the northern hemisphere, with it officially commencing on the September equinox, which this year will be at 02:03 on Friday 23rd SeptemberSeptember. 1, 1939, was a dark day for the world. Ocean Hotel - The status of the legal action by the IW Council and the Police has been challenged by the ‘owners’ of the Ocean Hotel as they are now denying that they own the hotel. Phoenix Commercial Property Developments (PCPD) say they only purchased the freehold reversion to the site in 122 years’ time, not the hotel building. The IW Council and the Police are now considering their next steps.
In my report last month, I said that Sandown High Street had been selected to receive help from a government sponsored group named the High Street Regeneration Task Force (HRTF). I am incredibly pleased that we had been selected to get this help. Well, our first meeting took place at the end of July, and I must say I was disappointed. I felt that there was little representation from the members of our business community. I have written to the Director of Regeneration expressing my concerns; I just hope he takes note of them. We should get a report back from the HRTF officers soon so I will be extremely interested in their initial thoughts about regenerating our High Street.

The second was a call from a company who for the price of £195 could get your council tax band changed and claim back payments from the 90s mounting to thousands of pounds They will be using the rebate payable to those in bands A-D to target anyone who might not automatically get this payment. They will take your card details along with the £195 giving them access to your bank account. For businesses as with consumers any call out of the blue offering you something that seems too good to be true probably is – if you are interested in changing providers then do your homework and approach the company yourself.
This appears to be a scam aimed at businesses offering to provide cheaper card machines and payment methods. The caller made 5 or 6 calls in the space of 30 minutes and became aggressive when challenged. The resident just hung up on them and reported to us as she no longer runs a business however this could lure a business into paying money.
