The perfect setting for the

White sands of Castaway Island Resort, Fiji
As a travel magazine, Islandtime has written its fair share of stories on weddings, honeymoons and romantic getaways in the South Pacific. After all, it’s a big part of the Pacific travel market. As publishers, the wedding would be our first chance to experience a Pacific wedding as invited guests. Denise is a cousin of the publisher, Fran McDermott, and is one of her closest friends. Needless to say, we were very much looking forward to this tropical celebration. The location for Danny and Denise’s big day was the stunning setting of Castaway Island Resort on Fiji’s Mamanuca Group, just off the coast of Nadi. A marine engineer by trade, Danny has been flying from New Zealand up to Castaway for over 12 years, as his job is to keep the resorts’ various watercraft in tip-top working order. With Danny considered part of the close-knit Castaway family and Denise a long-time fan of Fiji, the destination was decided and the planning could begin. Danny’s inside knowledge of the island made some decisions easy. Choosing the place for the ceremony and the reception was straightforward, but there were plenty of other details to organise and confirm beforehand. Enter Laisa Ganilau, Castaway’s Front of House Manager and Wedding Co-ordinator. Laisa started working at the resort in 2000 and knows what it takes to make the big day special. “My philosophy is simple. Your wedding day should be filled with love and happiness and you should be able to relax. When you choose us to put your dream wedding together, this is not a day to be filled with a ‘to-do list’ for you!” she says. “We try and re-create a vision that the bride and groom have and do everything possible to make sure it exceeds their expectations.” “This is a special day for the couple, their family and friends, so at Castaway we make sure there is only one wedding party on the island at any one time. The big resorts can get busy with weddings, but at Castaway we don't want a bride walking down the aisle, only to see another bride doing the same thing on the same day.” Laisa and Denise were in contact throughout the lead-up, sorting accommodation for family members, welcome packs, going over the dinner menu, table settings, photography, make-up, flowers, celebrant, vows, music and the “day-after” party. As Denise said, “Nothing was a problem.” There were also some surprise additions. “One of the little touches Laisa arranged was bringing in a rowboat to set up as a bar. It looked amazing and was a hit with Danny, who has spent so many years working on the Castaway boats. We watched the boys carry it passed us on the morning of the wedding and we got goose bumps!” said Denise.

Danny and Denise chose a 4.30pm wedding to miss the hottest part of the day, but as you’d expect, preparations started well before that. Hair and make-up are all-important, with Denise employing the services of Totoka Hair and Makeup. The Denarau-based company is owned by a Kiwi, Leanne Goff, who is a Servillestrained hairdresser, colourist and stylist. Totoka provide mobile hair and make-up services all across Fiji, and Leanne and her stylist, Lodoviko, popped across to Castaway for the day to ensure Denise and the girls were looking their very best. “Leanne did our hair beautifully, plus it lasted all night! She was simply lovely to deal with and so professional. Lodoviko, who did our make-up, was also fantastic. We all wanted a natural look with a glow and that is just what we got.” The wedding ceremony was held at Monkey Rock, a sheltered spot at the top end of Castaway’s main beach. The photographs say it best, but the weather really did co-operate, with a warm sun and a cooling sea breeze. Led by two strapping Fijian warriors, Denise walked slowly down the beach with her bridesmaids following. It was a lovely moment, with tears being shed. The ceremony went off without a hitch, and with rings exchanged and a big kiss, Danny and Denise were a happily married husband and wife! You couldn’t hope for a more romantic setting, and it was the perfect backdrop for Michelle Cheer from Cheer Wedding Photography to take some stunning shots. Michelle is a top local wedding photographer who specialises in boutique wedding photography all around Fiji, from intimate nuptials through to weddings with 70 or more guests. Denise loved the fact that Michelle only takes a limited number of bookings per month, which meant she could provide a personal service.

As the sun dropped, guests sat down to a delicious meal prepared by the resort’s celebrity chef, Lance Seeto, with tasty cocktails (and next-morning hangovers) dispensed by Castaway’s local award-winning bartending guru, Shadow. As darkness fell, the music started and the dancing lasted well into the early hours. Castaway Island has all the ingredients for a memorable wedding. The setting is magical, with flawless white sand, beautiful blue water and swaying palm trees making the resort a true picture-postcard version of paradise. It has a wonderfully relaxed feel that puts everyone at ease and in a great mood for celebrating. And of course there are people like Laisa, Steven Andrews, General Manager and the rest of the Castaway team who are there to make every moment special. For Danny, Denise, their families and friends, the event could not have gone any better. “We both woke up the day after the wedding and said we would not have changed a thing!! It was beyond perfect." “It was everything we ever dreamed of. We will never forget how Castaway made it happen for us. It was the best decision we have ever made.”
A great wedding A wonderful holiday You could say a wedding is all about the couple, but at a place like Castaway Island Resort it’s just as much fun for the guests, as there are plenty of ways to immerse yourself in a true Fijian island experience before and after a wedding. Feel like a little indulgence? Castaway’s Vale ni Veibobo, or House of Massage, is set amongst the resort’s lush tropical nursery and is the perfect place to relax after a late night of celebrations. We thoroughly enjoyed the two signature treatments. Fran chose the Lomani full-body massage, a delicious blend of acupressure, Swedish massage, reflexology and traditional Fijian Bobo. I took the traditional Swedish massage, the 'guys’ massage that had me feeling loose and limber. The snorkelling straight off the beach was also fantastic, with the fringing reef creating all sorts of nooks and crannies to explore. The resort provides flippers and snorkels free of charge, plus they have kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for guests to enjoy at their leisure. If staying active seems too much like hard work, pick out a hammock or deckchair, kick back and relax on the beach or by the pool.

Mixing it up at Radisson Blu If you’re a wedding guest in Fiji, there’s no reason why you should limit your stay to the place where the wedding is taking place. We managed to turn our Islandtime wedding experience into a fun, family holiday for Fran, our three kids and myself. We spent three nights at the Raddison Blu Resort on Denarau Island before the wedding and another two nights afterwards. Radisson Blu is a paradise for children, starting with the Radisson “banana boys” activities crew, who entertain visiting children with non-stop fun and games and a million laughs. Seriously, these guys most go home exhausted after a day’s work. The Radisson’s waterslide is another hit with children, plus there’s a big games room and of course the Kids Club. With this super-fun atmosphere, children make friends in no time and often spend hours having their own adventures with their new best buddies. That’s not to say the adults miss out on anything. There are some great dining options to choose from. We were fans of the fine cuisine at The Cross and the delicious breakfast omelettes. Plus, the adults-only pool provides a place to escape the noise and read a few pages of your book. The Radisson will soon undergo a major transformation in two main areas, with a major refit of the Beachside Blu Restaurant and Bar, plus a complete reworking of the Water Court Restaurant. This will become Denarau Island’s only Thai restaurant. Eve and Simon Banana
30 minutes poolside to poolside with Island Hoppers With 333 islands, Fiji has a huge variety of destinations for travellers to choose from. Some are within exceptionally easy reach of Nadi International Airport, with Denarau Island being the obvious example. There are a myriad of beautiful places to explore further afield, including the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, the Coral Coast, Vanua Levu and Taveuni. If going this extra distance from Nadi feels like an obstacle, an easy and exciting alternative is to get there by air on a helicopter or a plane. Companies such as Island Hoppers provide a comprehensive aerial transfer service, with a free pick-up from the airport to the nearby helipad. On this visit to Fiji, Islandtime had the pleasure of getting on board with Island Hoppers for a transfer to Castaway Island. The process couldn’t have been any easier or quicker. Island Hoppers picked up our group from our Denarau resort and took us to their helipad next to the Denarau Golf Club. After the crew weighed our bags and we listened to a safety briefing from the pilot, we were up, up and away and soaring out to sea. The flight time was a quick 12 minutes, but as we passed over the stunning blue Fijian waters and spectacular reef formations we wished we could keep going a wee bit longer! If you want to make life easy for yourself or you just want a treat (think wedding couple or romantic getaway), being whisked away to an island paradise is the only way to go!
Chasing the big one with Ocean Charters Just because we were heading to Fiji for a special occasion, there was no reason why we couldn’t make the most of the many local activities. With that in mind, the boys decided a halfday fishing was in order. Our hosts were Ocean Charters Fiji, who are based in Port Denarau.
Fran & Taine take off with Island Hoppers
With a booking made well in advance, fingers were crossed for good conditions. As luck would have it, we couldn’t have picked a better day. The sea was pure glass and the sun was out, with barely a cloud in the sky. If you’re staying in a Denarau resort, Ocean Charters can pick you up straight off the beach, which makes it all too easy. They know the waters off Denarau like the back of their hand, and on this fine morning we headed for “the outside”, as our skipper, Dennis, put it. To be more specific, we were heading for the deep blue waters outside the barrier reef that fringes the main island of Viti Levu. Our target fish were mahimahi, which normally weigh between seven and 13 kilos. After half an hour of smooth motoring, we came to a stop in the channel between two wellknown surf resorts, Tavarua Island and Namotu Island. Joe, our deckhand, rigged up four rods for trolling and away we went, slowly heading out to sea with the lures bobbing behind us. The weather had co-operated, now it was just a matter of the fish biting! Half the fun of fishing is anticipating hooking a great catch, and these beautiful waters amplified the feeling. We waited patiently. Dennis and Joe had their eyes peeled for any action but the only sign of life was a whale basking in the sun. On we went, but after two and a half hours of trolling, this wasn’t to be our day. Even though we’d missed a fish, being out on such a spectacular sea was still great fun. Dennis and Joe had done everything they could and were great guys to be on-board with. We enjoyed a few cold beers on the way home and a few laughs about our lack of luck. We’ll be back on Ocean Charters next time we visit, so look out fish!

Solomon Islands
Welkum to the Solomon Islands! Islandtime Magazine is very pleased to bring you travel updates and news from the Solomon Islands for the very first time. A scattered archipelago of some 900-odd richly forested mountainous islands and low-lying coral atolls, the Solomon Islands has been attracting international tourism since 1568, when the Spanish explorer Alvaro de Mendana first sailed into this tucked away corner of the South Pacific. Mendana’s legacy can still be found in the Solomon Islands today with many of the islands still bearing the Spanish names he gave them - Santa Isabel, San Cristóbal and perhaps the most famous of all, Guadalcanal, the name synonymous with World War II. Almost 450 years after he discovered the Solomon Islands – and in the process introduced chickens to the region – the Spaniards landfall at Tuvalu has been officially commemorated with the unveiling of a bronze statue in Honiara. In full recognition of the link the Solomon Islands shares with Mendaña’s homeland, the Ambassador of Spain to Australia, His Excellency Senor Enrique Viguera flew to Honiara to officiate at the event and unveil the statue presented as a gift from the Spanish people. It’s much easier, and quicker to visit the Solomon Islands these days from New Zealand thanks to Solomon Airlines, which offers four flights a week from Brisbane, with seamless connections to Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. Today World War II buffs and veterans and their families scuba divers and surfers looking for the ultimate uncrowded wave, make up the bulk of the 25,000 or so international travellers who visit every year. But the destination is fast attracting a brand new type of travellers from around the world - family groups, honeymooners, sports fishermen, yachties, culture-lovers and simply those looking to make their own tracks. The newly emerging, multi-faceted Solomon Islands can pretty much cater to every taste, desire and budget with its myriad choice of accommodation – from the ‘big gun’ hotels of the capital, Honiara, to boutique resort accommodation, eco-lodges and home-stays dotted across the entire archipelago.
Visit www.visitsolomons.com.sb and like us at www.facebook.com/visitsolomonislands.
Dive the Solomon Islands aboard MV Biliki During World War Two the Solomon Islands saw some of the most fierce fighting in the entire Pacific. These battles left a massive number of submerged ships and aircraft throughout the islands. When you combine this with the staggering diversity of marine life and crystal clear waters, what you have is a true diver’s paradise. And best of all it remains one of the least dived areas of the world. For those agents with clients looking for a unique diving experience, Dive Fish Snow Travel is now offering the opportunity to dive in this magnificent archipelago spending seven nights aboard custom-built MV Biliki - twin share with private bathroom. The offer includes return flights ex-Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch via Brisbane to Honiara, all meals on board and unlimited diving. www.divefishsnow.co.nz.
New schedule great news for Solomon’s travellers Solomon Airlines has made it even easier for New Zealanders to connect to and from the Solomon Islands with the release of its new Northern Winter timetable. As part of the new schedule commencing November 17, passengers travelling from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch now have plenty of time to make seamless north-bound connections to Honiara and beyond the capital on domestic services. The improved schedule stems from Solomon Airlines’ flights to Honiara being pushed back by half an hour to a 10am departure on Mondays and Wednesdays, arriving in Honiara at 2.15pm. The same applies to Solomon Airlines flights ex-Honiara to Brisbane on Tuesdays and Thursdays departing at 12pm and arriving in Brisbane at 2.15pm. Flights operating ex-Brisbane to Honiara on Fridays and Saturdays will depart at 09.00 am, arriving at 1.15pm. Flights operating from Honiara to Brisbane on Fridays and Sundays will depart at 2.15pm, arriving at 4.15pm. www.flysolomons.com.
Surfers Paradise Solomon’s style For surfers who want to get off the beaten track and beat the crowds, the Solomon Islands is a fantastic surfing option. If this sounds like something your clients would appreciate, Go Tours has maxed the value of its surfing offer with eight nights and meals at Papatura Island Retreat complete with a whole host of extras. The offer comes complete with return economy airfares flying Solomon Airlines from Brisbane to Honiara plus return domestic inter-islands airfares and transfers, two 2.5 hour surf sessions every day, free use of snorkelling and fishing gear, SUPs, a local village tour and a free t-shirt and info pack. www.gotours.com.au or email info@gotours.com.au.
Solomon’s takes "clean-up" message online Having successfully launched its ‘Keep the Solomon Islands Tidy’ campaign with several high profile clean-up operations in Honiara, the Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau Green Team’ has now taken its message online with the help of two local schoolchildren. Posted on the SIVB facebook page -www.facebook.com/ visitsolomonislands - the 30-second clip is entitled ‘Our Home – look after it’. A simple message underlines the impact littering and the tipping of general rubbish across the country is having on the local environment – both for the local people and international visitors. ‘Green Team’ leader, SIVB marketing manager, Freda Unusi said while the clip is short, it has a very strong message that needs to reverberate for years. “Hearing and seeing the message through the eyes and words of a child is a powerful prompt that it is time to do something about the situation and help determine the future we leave to our children,” she said.

Cook Islands
Changes allround at The Islander Hotel Major improvements have been taking place at The Islander Hotel (formerly the Aquarius Rarotonga Hotel) since new owners took over the property in May. For starters there’s a new expanded main kitchen (complete with new menu) and an expanded bar allowing thirsty customers to be served in double-quick time! Guests will also love the room renovations which include new airconditioning, king size beds, fabrics and linen, new interior colours, bathroom amenities and a new flat screen TVs with satellite channels. On top of all that the beachfront property will create a large rock wall that will be back-filled with white sand – which means an even wider beach for visitors to lounge on.
Muri Beach Club Hotel hosts whale fundraiser From July through to October the waters off Rarotonga become home to humpback whales - they sure know to find paradise! In early October, Muri Beach Club Hotel hosted The Safe Passage Campaign Fundraiser and Aere Ra Event (Farewell Ceremony) for these amazing creatures. The Aere Ra ceremony was a grand farewell to the whales as they began their long journey home to Antarctica. Guests who attended the event were treated to a moving farewell ceremony on Muri Lagoon followed by an exclusive event in the hotel’s beautiful Lagoon Lounge. A short auction of wonderful prizes followed, to raise funds for the purchase of next year’s whale tags. Proceeds from the event went back into supporting the research dedicated to the Cook Islands’ whales.

Tata signals an end of an era After 18 years ownership, hospitality identity Tata Crocombe has decided to call time on his interests in the Cook Islands, including The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa, Sanctuary Rarotonga – on the beach, Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa and other associated interests. International hotel brokers JLL will conduct an international tender process. While the international resources of JLL will be deployed, if the sale of other similar resorts in the South Pacific is any guide, it could be as long as a year or even more before a sale might be concluded. In the meantime, it will be “business as usual” and all contractual relationships with staff, wholesalers, suppliers, landowners and regulatory agencies etc. will continue as per normal. “There have been many highs and lows on this challenging journey and I would like to thank the key management and staff, land owners, suppliers and wholesalers who have supported the development and progress of the properties to date,” said Tata.

Manta magic at Sheraton Kona Big Island The Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa in Keauhou Bay on Hawaii’s Big Island has a special relationship with manta rays. Resort guests are able to watch the graceful mantas most evenings from the lanai (balcony) of several of the oceanfront guest rooms or the special viewing area near the Sheraton’s ‘Rays on the Bay’ restaurant and bar. You can even organise a snorkel or dive at night and actually view these beautiful giants from the water. Adding to the manta ray experience is the recently opened Manta Learning Centre – a collaboration between Sheraton Kona and Keller and Wendy Laros of the Manta Pacific Research Foundation.

The new Manta Learning Centre showcases 20 images of the resident Keauhou Bay mantas shot by photographer Bo Pardau and looped video footage. With storyboards detailing the latest research and scientific information are also available for viewing.

Pearl Harbour, a walk through history – Oahu On December 7, 1941 the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbour was to be one of the most significant events in World War II. Today Pearl Harbour is the most visited attraction in all of Hawaii – and without a doubt a must-see for any visitor. Pearl Harbour (which still operates as a naval base) is really like a big history park with a variety of different attractions. A real highlight is the USS Arizona Memorial that sits over the wreck of the battleship where 1177 crew lost their lives. Each name is carved into the memorial and standing in front of it, imagining the carnage, is a very sobering experience. Other highlights include the USS Missouri (or Mighty Mo) and the wonderfully claustrophobic walk through the USS Bowfin submarine.

Pacific Pearl gets a taste of Tonga
Scenic Hotel sets up for summer
The Pacific Pearl cruise ship recently stopped in the Capital of Tonga and was welcomed into the Kingdom by cultural performers and a bunch friendly smiles. The sound of the conch and the beating of the Polynesian drums were heard across Nukualofa’s wharf calling the visiting ship forth to the shores of Tonga. This was followed by traditional cultural dances and music from the nation’s police band. Local markets and tourist operators shifted to the wharf for the day where over 2,300 passengers and crew got a taste of Tongan culture.
The team at Scenic Hotel Tonga have been busy preparing the property for the summer months – including a refreshed hotel exterior and swimming pool. They have also had the pleasure of hosting the winners of Auckland based Radio Niu ‘2-Tickets to Paradise Competition’. Set in 16 acres of tropical gardens with 76 Superior Rooms, conference facilities for up to 120 delegates and three breakout rooms, Scenic Hotel Tonga is the perfect spot for leisure, corporate or team building getaways.
Traditional handicrafts a family affair The Pacific people have a fine tradition of creating beautiful handicrafts and in Tonga, a woman by name of Tangiloto has been doing it longer than most! Tangiloto runs a handicraft business called Tapaingatu ‘o e Halamaui Kisikisi with her daughter, Kalisi. They have been making traditional Tongan handicrafts for an amazing 45 years. They both enjoy making authentic creations from natural resources all found in Tonga’s own backyard; this includes tapa making (tapa cloths made from a plant called Hiapo), weaving (made from plants) and painting (ink found from local trees called Tongo and Koka). Tangiloto says that being a main income earner for her household helps her family tremendously, in particular, paying for her children and grandchildren’s schooling and also any church activities she is involved in. With their handicraft business, Tangiloto and Kalisi have a wide range of customers from Tonga, New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii. Next time you are in Tonga, keep an eye out for her beautiful creations.

Aga Reef Resort hosts United Nations chief
Lance Afoa collects silverware for Sinalei
In early September, Samoa hosted the United Nations Conference on Small Island Developing States. One of the visitors was none other than United Nations chief, Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon from Korea. During the conference Moon and Samoan Prime Minister, Rt Hon Tuilaepa Dr Sailele Malielegaoi had the pleasure of visiting Aga Reef Resort and Spa, the beautiful boutique resort on the south coast of Upolu. While they were both there for high-level talks, they also had an opportunity to take in the stunning surroundings in the comfort and luxury of the resort, with morning tea being served on the Tualupetu Restaurant front deck overlooking the ocean. During the week, Aga Reef Resort also had the privilege of hosting delegations from Qatar, Kuwait and Portugal. The head of the Qatar delegation loved the local fruit so much he sent out a special request to take some mangoes, bananas and cooked taro back to the Middle East!
Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa’s very own Lance Afoa, a local boy from the nearby village of Siumu, was declared runner-up by a panel of celebrity chefs who judged 17 participants at the Pacific Chefs Culinary workshop in Fiji. Lance has been a driving force behind Sinalei Reef Resort’s 'Farm and Ocean to Plate' philosophy. Developed with the assistance of well-known food training specialist Colin Chung, this food philosophy combines local products and contemporary ways to create delicious, fresh menus, built around close working relationships with local food producers. This growing global trend has seen Sinalei develop a partnership with Poutasi Gardens, which employs local staff and develops their horticultural skills to grow salad greens and herbs of the highest quality for Sinalei’s kitchens. We can’t wait to sample this fine cuisine for ourselves.

Best value in Lonely Planet Global travel guide, Lonely Planet has named Samoa in its list of Top 10 Best Value travel destinations for 2015. Here’s what they wrote – “It feels like we’ve heard this one before: ‘Beautiful, undeveloped tropical paradise seeks underfunded travellers for discreet liaison. Applicants must enjoy no-nonsense budget buses and simple, idyllic beach hut accommodation (fales), owned by local families, who tend to throw in dinner.' So as with so many places before it, we’d say get to Samoa soon.” Great praise indeed and we can only agree.

Warm welcome for Hōkūle‘a and Hikianalia American Samoa has recently seen the visit of the worldwide voyaging vessel, Hōkūle‘a and its support boat Hikianalia on a Mālama Honua sail that will take them around the world by 2017. The National Marine Sanctuary of Amercian Samoa organised the official greeting and traditional ‘ava ceremony and greeted the crews of the Hōkūle‘a and its sister vessel, the Hikianalia. The greeting involved two traditional Samoan fautasi longboats, 4 outrigger canoes welcoming the vessels, and transport to shore where the vessel crews performed a ‘mele” or chant while educational facility to commemorate this historical event. Both vessels left American Samoa on the next leg of the journey which will take them to New Zealand via Tonga and the Kermadec Islands.

Wyland mural graces Ocean Center
With crystal clear waters and abundant sea life, American Samoa is a great destination for divers. With that in mind, The National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa dedicated a new exhibit at the Tauese P.F. Sunia Ocean Center. The exhibit is called "DIVE American Samoa" was designed to inspire people to explore the underwater world of the sanctuary areas within the National Marine Sanctuary. The display contains a description of all the gear required to scuba dive, and a quote by the famous marine biologist, Dr.Sylvia Earle, and a mannequin wearing scuba diving gear with a beautiful backdrop of American Samoa’s underwater tropical reef as a scene.
30 years of flying for Hawaiian Airlines
Robert Wyland, the world renowned American marine muralist has painted a wall at the Tauese P.F. Sunia Ocean Center, dedicated to the crew members of the Hokule’a and more specifically to a “champion for the ocean’, Nainoa Thompson. Nainoa is President of the Polynesian Voyager Society, the organisation behind the Hokule’a voyage. Over 100 people attended a ceremony that also recognized the contributions of local artist Regina Meredith and three of her students. A total of 85 students and teachers from Pacific Horizons, South Pacific Academy, Samoa Baptist Academy and Fa'asao High School were present to paint alongside Wyland on 6 large canvases. Each school took a completed canvas back to their educational facility to commemorate this historical event.
Hawaiian Airlines recently celebrated 30 years of flying the route between Honolulu and Pago Pago. "We have served American Samoa since October 24th, 1984 and it is a relationship we greatly value," said Mitzi Semo, manager of the airline's Pago Pago station. Long may the relationship continue. ©NOAA/NMSAS.
