When you’re footloose and fancyfree overseas travel couldn’t be much easier. You simply book a flight, pack a bag and away you go. But what happens when you have one, two, three or more kids in tow? The simple answer, you head for the sunny South Pacific skies of Fiji. In terms of visitor numbers coming out of New Zealand, Fiji dominates the South Pacific travel market. If you put those numbers under the microscope, it’s clear that travelling families make up a big chunk of them. And it’s for good reason. When it comes to family holidays, Fiji does it so well.
Family travel made easy When you're travelling with children, the one thing you want is ease. Ease in travelling to your destination and transferring from the airport to your accommodation, room layouts that make fitting everyone in simple, resort activities and staff that make entertaining the kids a breeze, and so on and so on. Getting to Fiji is certainly easy. There are plenty of direct flights into Nadi, which means you have the flexibility to plan what works best. For example, when you’re travelling with a baby, the option of a later flight from Nadi to Auckland can be perfect timing for a peaceful sleep for baby. This was our experience last time we visited Fiji, but if you don’t have that luck, a three hour flight makes for a pretty quick trip anyway.
Depending on where you’re staying, transfers are straightforward, particularly if you’ve booked in at one of Denarau’s resorts. Depending on the traffic through town, you can be unloading the troops after a painless 20 minute drive. There are also small things that can make a big difference. As frequent Fiji family travellers ourselves, we love that airport customs officers often fast track families to the front of passport control, saving some serious queuing time for fidgeting children.
From generation to generation Fiji has been a tourist destination longer than any other South Pacific nation, and over the years the tourism industry has fine-tuned the details to make a memorable family holiday happen. In fact, they've been catering to the family market for so long, there is now multiple generations of the same family coming to Fiji. The grandparents started visiting the islands, then they brought their kids, and now those kids have their own children and are bringing them too! And no doubt these family traditions will continue in the years to come.

The people make the difference
Denarau - family fantastic
A key ingredient in Fiji's recipe for success is its people and it doesn't take long to work out that Fijians genuinely love children. Parents with babies or toddlers can leave their little ones with the wonderful Fijian nannies with peace of mind they're in good hands. The older children love it too. Most resorts have an activities team who are experts at turning even the most basic event into a riot - like an egg and spoon race that ends with everyone rolling around on the ground in fits of laughter!
The first stop for many Fijian-bound families is Denarau Island with its fine selection of resorts. As we mentioned, one of the most popular family resorts is Radisson Blu. In 2014 it was named in Fiji’s Top 10 Resorts for Families by Holidays With Kids magazine, one of the leading family travel magazine and websites in Australasia. The pools are also fantastic, but the star of the show is definitely the white water tunnel that provides hours of slip-sliding fun. There’s a big games room which includes air hockey and table tennis plus there’s a full kids club facility too. And of course the ‘Banana Boys’ do an amazing job of entertaining the kids.
The fabulous Banana Boys
Sitting at the northern tip of Denarau is the Fiji Beach Resort & Spa managed by Hilton. Over the years the resort has consistently been recognised as one of top family resorts in Fiji. Like Radisson Blu it also sits in Holiday with Kids Magazine's top 10 Fijian Family Resorts. It’s recognition that’s well deserved. Here they have a host of family-focused facilities, such as the complimentary Kids Club and family friendly accommodation - particularly their spacious and well designed two and three bedroom options, ideal for family stays.
Like most nine year old boys, ours is full of beans and into absolutely everything. On a recent stay at Radisson Blu Resort the famous ‘Banana Boys’ activities team kept him and the tribe of other Kiwi and Aussie kids totally entertained every day, during the week of our stay. It was brilliant; Treasure hunts, touch footy and pool volleyball were just some of the activities on offer and the whole time the kids and the staff looked like they loved every minute of it. What’s even more impressive is each time we return they remember Taine by name. It’s like a big reunion and all the fun starts where it left off! Considering the thousands of kids that pass through each resort, it’s amazing to think the ‘Banana Boys’ can remember individual kids, but they do. And that's a big part of why Fijian family holidays are so good. The staff members that spend time with the kids end up becoming genuine friends.
Mealtime deals are also a bonus. Apart from being chock full of delicious snacks and meals, Fiji Resort and Spa’s kids' menus (for children up to 10 years old) are free at various times. At breakfast, kids eat free in Nuku (when accompanied by a paying adult). At lunchtime, kids eat free from the kids’ menu between midday and 2pm in Nuku and Maravu (when accompanied by a paying adult). And at dinner, kids eat free from the kids’ menu or kids’ buffet between 5.30pm and 7.30pm in Nuku and Maravu (when accompanied by a paying adult).
Nestled within the ‘Dream Water’ (Tadrawai) Valley and set amongst lush tropical landscape, Mango Bay Resort overlooks an enclosed bay of crystal clear water and stunning white beachfront. Newly built Garden View Bures are surrounded by beautiful landscapes offering 2 separate ensuite bedrooms, accommodating a maximum 4 guests. For the young at heart we have the option to book into our Jungle Bure - a comfortable 8 bed dorm room with shared bathroom facilities.
With something fun to keep even the most restless traveller entertained, you can choose from a waterfall hike, a horse ride, or an island trip out to beautiful Yanuca, or take a trip with the renowned Mango Bay Fishing Charters to name a few things.

Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa. Satisfaction guaranteed. When it comes to choosing a family friendly resort on Denarau parents are spoilt for choice. One of the standouts is Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa. This spacious, palm filled property is fantastic fun for the kids, and provides a sanctuary for mum and dad with plenty of dining and well-being options to choose from.
Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa
The expansive main pool is a real feature of the resort. It’s been cleverly designed with a series of different zones, each one with a different depth, so regardless of how old your children are they have a safe area to swim in. And the pool even has its own little island, complete with palm trees. The poolside service is also very attentive, with friendly staff keeping your drinks topped up and food flowing as you require. Plus the poolside icecream stand is a favourite with the kids who like nothing better than licking through a couple of delicious scoops. Sofitel’s slide is also a huge favourite with little ones (and plenty of parents) lining up for the slippery fun – you start quite slowly and then pick up speed towards the bottom, so be prepared for a fast finish and big splash. It’s all good fun! And so is Sofitel’s Turtle Club Kids’ Club, another great facility. It includes an air-conditioned nap room, library, play area with board games and lots of Lego. It also has a fenced-in outdoor playground with a cool cubby house and slide. Best of all parents can leave their kids in the capable hands of Sofitel staff and enjoy some downtime or treat themselves to some pampering in Sofitel’s exquisite SO Spa. When you add in the convenience of interconnecting family-friendly room options, you have a recipe for a stay that satisfies everyone.

Escape to The Mamanuca’s If you’d prefer a true island experience, the nearby Mamanuca Island group is home to numerous fine family options. Although it means another trip from Denarau, it’s definitely worth the effort. Sea transfers from Port Denarau are the most cost-effective way to transport the family and in most cases you’ll be at your desired island within an hour. If you can stretch the budget, companies like Pacific Island Air can whisk you from the mainland to your island destination by helicopter or seaplane in around 10-12 minutes. Yes it’s a luxury, but seeing the deep blue Fijian sea and stunning reef formations from the air is unforgettable. One of The Mamanuca’s longest established resorts is Castaway Island. It’s also one of the best for families. It’s the sort of place that people come to once and keep coming back – in fact the guest return rate is well above the industry average. So what makes Castaway so special? Where do we start. The beautiful main beach has the softest white sand, the water is crystal clear and because the beach faces northwest it’s sheltered from the tradewinds that pick up during the day. In other words it’s picture perfect, safe swimming for kids. Older children can help themselves to the kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling gear and explore the rich coral reef just offshore. When the tide gets low, the kids have their own pool, complete with a funky log waterfall. Being a smaller resort, Castaway has a chilled out vibe. Nobody is stressed, people say hi, and for the kids it’s super easy making new friends, whether that’s at the kid’s club, pool or just mucking around the resort. Accommodation is are also well set up for families, in particular the beachfront family bures which can sleep mum, dad and three kids with ease. Plus the food under new chef Markus Nufer is delicious – the hot breakfast pancakes are a big favourite for our young ones.
Pancake breakfast Castaway Island
One island over from Castaway is Malolo Island Resort - another property that’s recognised as a quality family resort. Without a doubt, Malolo's appeal comes from its ability to cater for families, with a separate pool, an innovative children’s club programme, an entertainment lounge and a dining area for children 13 years and older. The Kids’ Club in Tia's Treehouse, set on the hillside under an enormous mango tree, is definitely their centre of activity. It’s home to a host of equipment and games and has a fully fenced playground. Malolo's Yanu Yanu programme is also a great feature and gives children the opportunity to live like an islander for one or two days, or a whole week! Free for children between four and 12 years old, the programme mixes a lot of fun with education about environmental issues, the culture and the history of Malolo and Fiji. Who says kids can't learn if they're out of school?

Just south of Malolo is Plantation Island, one of Fiji's most popular family-friendly resorts. A major drawcard is Plantation offers a five-star location at an affordable price, so it's no wonder families love it. The island has loads to keep teenagers busy, with mini-golf, volleyball, tennis, banana boats and safe swimming in the lagoon. The younger ones have more activities than you can throw a coconut at - a jumping castle, fish feeding and t-shirt painting to name just a few. The resort can also arrange customised activities for family groups, such as private beach barbecues at the end of the beach or private dining elsewhere.

In contrast to budget friendly Plantation Island, Vomo stands on the top rung of the luxury ladder. Sitting at the northern tip of The Mamanuca Group, Vomo has recently undergone a multi-million dollar refurbishment, including the creation of a Kid’s Village full of high quality toys and other entertaining equipment. The 5-star resort has also updated its accommodation options, plus they built new hillside villas to complement the existing beachfront villas. Both can sleep two adults and two children with ease. As you might expect, Vomo’s service levels are exceptional and so is the standard of childcare. The ‘baby butlers’ are naturals with the young ones, but there’s a polish and professionalism to everything they do. Even the kid’s menu is first-class. For example, organic egg omlettes for breakfast, 5-hour simmered Bolognese pasta for lunch, beef fillet steak for dinner and homemade fruit sorbet for desert. And just like the adults menu it changes every day. Lucky lucky kids!
Cruising on the Coral Coast Down on the Coral Coast, The Outrigger on the Lagoon has also earned a reputation as a great place to take children. The Outrigger has two children’s clubs. Little Riggers is for those aged between three and seven, and Beach Riggers is for the eight to 12-year-olds, so children don't get stuck doing anything they're too “old” or “young” for. Once again there's a huge variety of activities. Little Riggers has Groovy Movie Time, colouring in competitions, Riggers Disco, pass the parcel and even visits to Kula Eco Park to meet Gweenie the Iguana. There are also some great activities for the 13+ group. These include making spears, an adventure on the Sigatoka Sand Dunes, a tour of the Tavuni Hill Fort or hikes to Bebe Hill.
Day tripping For those who prefer to base themselves on the mainland, South Seas Cruises offer some superb day trips that are great for families and give them a taste of the outer island experience. One of the most popular family friendly cruises is the full day (seven hours) or half day (four hours) cruise to Treasure Island Resort. Just 45 minutes away, Treasure Island is surrounded by a magnificent marine reserve, making it perfect for swimming and snorkelling in the crystal clear waters. Families can also make use of the islands swimming pool, mini-golf, playground and at certain times of the year, the fabulous turtle pond. And there's no need to bring your own snorkelling gear, South Seas provide that, free of charge. For smaller kids there's the 'Finding Nemo' cruise to South Sea Island. It's just a 30 minute ride away and when you get there you can see the stunning underwater world of the Marine Sanctuary from the comfort of the South Seas semi-submersible vessel "Coral Explorer". Afterwards, there's time to relax ashore, kayak or go for a swim or snorkel. At a total of three hours (including the 30 minute trip each way), this shorter but highly entertaining cruise is ideal for those with younger families, and who knows – they might just find Nemo!

Adrenalin Fiji. Pure Fijian Adventure. If you’re after some serious water fun, the people to see are Adrenalin Fiji. They’ve been thrilling visitors to Fiji for almost 10 years and offer just about every activity you can think of – parasailing, wakeboarding, fishing, banana rides, snorkeling plus a whole lot more. And the great thing is, almost every activity is suitable for kids. On our last visit, my son Taine and I booked in for Adrenalin’s half day jet ski safari – a three hour jet ski safari across the Fiji’s beautiful blue waters. Our starting point was Adrenalin’s base on the beach outside the Sofitel Resort and Spa in Denarau. After suiting up with lifejackets and listening to the thorough safety briefing, our group of 10 hopped on board their machines – singles going solo and couples like Taine and I going tandem. The plan for the day was a ride out to Beachcomber Island, where we’d stay for a snack, drink and snorkel, before heading home on our return journey. If you’ve never been on a jetski, they pack some serious punch and when you’re flying along, the adrenalin definitely gets pumping. Following our guides, we navigated the waters off Denarau with ease. As we headed into deeper waters a stiff wind made for some chop, slowing us a down a tad, but creating for an exciting spray-in-your-face ride and a few big jumps! On Beachcomber Island, it was time to chill out for a bit. Beachcomber is popular with backpackers, but for our purposes it proved a great spot for a quick snorkel and a cool drink afterwards. Before long we were back on the ski for the return journey home. After an hour, we arrived back at the Sofitel, exhilarated and slightly exhausted. From the smiles, it was pretty clear that everyone had loved the jetski safari and young Taine and I were no exception!

Awesome Adventures: Getting families up close sharks with and manta rays There’s no doubt our fear of sharks is almost always equalled by our curiosity about these ocean predators. In Fiji local company Awesome Adventures invites visitors, regardless of their age and fear factor, to actually get into the water with sharks and, wait for it, there is also the opportunity to swim with manta rays! The shark adventure is billed as the ‘Ultimate Encounter’. It’s open to all ages and is increasingly gaining popularity with family groups. Available as a day trip from Port Denarau or with a two or three nights stay at Barefoot Kuata (sharks circling nearby), the encounter gets snorkellers in the water with black tip and white tip reef sharks measuring up to about 1.8m in length. Barefoot Kuata is two hours from Port Denarau by the Yasawa Flyer which travels daily through Fiji’s remote Yasawa Island group. A further hour north is Barefoot Manta. Here, as the name indicates, visitors can swim with beautifully balletic manta rays. These creatures frequent the channels surrounding Barefoot Manta each year between May and October to dine on plankton and procreate. At both places
there are marine biologists at the ready to guide visitors and talk about sharks, manta rays, other marine life and the reefs surrounding the islands. Awesome Adventures Fiji offers visitors a range of package holidays to Barefoot Kuata and Barefoot Manta, as well as other islands in the Yasawa group. Awesome Adventures eschews the usual star rating system for accommodation in favour of a coconut rating – one coconut is basic with shared facilities, two coconuts is a modern, higher standard of accommodation and amenities, while three gives guests private ensuite bures and more modern amenities, and there is often air conditioning. Regardless of the coconut rating, visitors can be sure all resorts are located in a beautiful tropical island setting!
Happy families For ease, flexibility and a holiday everyone will remember, it's hard to go past Fiji. The islands' properties and operators meet the needs of Kiwi families expertly, and do it with a ton of enthusiasm and genuine care. It's true, Fijians have a natural affinity with children, which makes the holiday so much simpler and more enjoyable for mum and dad. And at the end of the day, that's what it's is all about - a holiday everyone can enjoy.

Vomo. Fiji’s first-class family holiday. VOMO has earned a well deserved reputation as one of Fiji’s very finest resorts. Anyone who’s had the pleasure of staying there will vouch for the exceptional experience on offer. What’s often overlooked is VOMO’s suitability as a year-round family-friendly resort. But the fact is VOMO provides visiting families with a magical mix of five-star luxury and endless fun. The centre of attention for ‘VOMO kids’ is the new purpose built Kids Village. That’s right – the kids actually have their own village. Step across a neat suspension bridge and you’ll find a fantastic facility with everything a child could want. Inside there’s a separate play area with a huge variety of toys – castles, dolls, dress-ups, blocks, balls and ride-on buggies – you name it VOMO have it. Plus it’s all well made stuff, not the kind of discount store gear that falls apart soon after you’ve bought it. At VOMO everything is quality, even the toys! In another room there’s a chill-out area full of comfy beanbags – it’s a nice quiet place for the really young ones to nap, and at night it transforms into a kids-own movie theatre. Outside you’ve got a huge grassy area for running around in, along with slides and a cool playhouse to climb on. Plus VOMO’s kids club staff keep the village spotlessly clean. Speaking of staff, you couldn’t get much better. The standard of service throughout the resort is impeccable. Relaxed, friendly but always very attentive and very professional. Nothing is too much trouble and everything is done with a big smile. VOMO’s ‘baby butlers’ are no exception. They don’t just look after kids, they connect with them and make each day lots of fun. Needless to say the kids just love them and of course Mum and Dad can enjoy some ‘us’ time knowing the little ones are in great hands. Outside the organised activities, there is also plenty to do. You can easily spend a whole day on the beach, swimming, snorkelling and making use of the kayaks, paddleboards and catamaran. You can explore the beaches on the other side of the island, hike to the top of Mt Vomo overlooking the resort, try PADI scuba diving with over eight sites within minutes of the resort, have a spa treatment at the luxurious Kui day Spa or simply relax poolside. When it comes to accommodation there are also a number of options. VOMO’s beautifully renovated Beachfront and Hillside villas can accommodate two adults and two children, and they come with a handy room divider to give everyone privacy. VOMO’s Beachfront Retreats are the next step up. Again they can accommodate two adults and two children, but with the added luxury of a private outdoor deck complete with bathtub and outdoor shower. If you’d like the ultimate in VOMO luxury and space you have two further options. The threebedroom Royal Villa sleeps up to six and comes with a private pool, double daybed and an extensive outdoor entertainment area. And then there’s The Residence. A palatial four-bedroom experience set across three pavilions. Here up to eight people can enjoy the best of private beachfront living. With a full kitchen, 24 hour onsite butler, superb indoor outdoor living, a private pool and a wide lawn, it’s truly exceptional. Which sums up the whole VOMO family experience nicely.

Fiji Airways has expanded its route network with the launch of a new direct service between Wellington and Nadi. Fiji Airways is now the only airline flying directly between Wellington and Fiji all year-round. Fiji Airways Chairman, Nalin Patel says Fiji’s links with Wellingtonians and New Zealanders from the surrounding region will be further strengthened by this new service. “This is one of the most significant new routes recently announced by Fiji Airways, and reflects the airline’s strong performance in New Zealand. For us, Wellington was a natural choice for a new service,” says Mr Patel. “The new service is already proving extremely popular here in New Zealand with healthy forward loads. We’re obviously delighted by this response from Kiwis.” The new service will run twice weekly, departing Wellington on Thursdays and Sundays, and opens up an additional 328 seats per week between New Zealand and Fiji. It will also provide Wellingtonians with an opportunity to conveniently connect to Apia, as well as to Los Angeles and other North American cities, via Nadi.

MY MATAI INCENTIVE
There’s never been a better time to sell Fiji with the launch of an exciting new incentive for all Matai agents – My Matai Incentive. Quite simply, it’s designed to get agents thinking about and selling the many different destinations Fiji has to offer, and to reward them for booking clients on a range of Fijian holidays. Fiji’s regions offer so many diverse holiday experiences – agents may not be familiar with some of these or may not have sold before and Tourism Fiji is doing its bit to change that.

FTE 2015 Second year success By Fran McDermott
Following the success of last years first ever Fijian Tourism Exchange, FTE 2015 had an even bigger turnout with an impressive 358 suppliers having the opportunity to connect with more than 150 international buyers and 18 international travel media. And like last year, it was judged a huge success by those involved.
18 islandtime July/August 2015
“The feedback from international buyers and partners in the tourism industry from this year’s expo has been fantastic,” said Truman Bradley, Executive Chairman for Tourism Fiji. “FTE is a solid platform for encouraging meaningful interactions between buyers from our key markets and further developing our industry to meet international traveller demands. It is an avenue to strengthen existing partnerships and forge new business relationships.”
FTE2015 Snaphots Australian and New Zealand still the top two. Fiji’s earnings from tourism for the March 2015 quarter are estimated to be FJD$310 million. Of that figure Australian visitors accounted for around 54% of the earnings and New Zealand visitors contributed around 11%. Visitors from the US and Europe were next, however, long term the South East Asian market, in particularly the emerging markets of India and China, present a big opportunity to create a more diverse customer base.
Fashion front and centre One of FTE2015’s highlights was the catwalk show featuring Fijian designers. Apart from showcasing some wonderful design, the event was opportunity for Tourism Fiji to promote itself as a cultural destination, where arts and crafts play an important role for locals. Clear labelling of quality Fijian made products was also seen as a priority.
Food and wine festival a key feature Good travel and good food go hand-in-hand. So it was fitting that FTE2015 included the Victoria Wines Food and Wine Festival. There was a huge variety of delicious cuisine on offer including Fijian flavours from Nadina, Thai flavours from the newly opened Chantara at Radisson Blu, famous Maravu favourites from the Hilton Fiji Beach Resort, as well as a healthy Deli range, a global selection of flavours from Indigo, Bone Fish and more. All of course accompanied by a range of carefully selected wines from Victoria Wines.
Tourism Fiji will lead Green Growth The Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism (MITT), Honourable Faiyaz Siddiq Koya revealed that Tourism Fiji will lead the way to achieve a sustainable, conscious tourism industry- one that aligns itself with the Fijian Government’s Green Growth Framework to protect the pristine natural environment of Fiji. Koya added that “educating our visitors on the environmental issues affecting our nation begins with international partners”. And that when the trade was selling Fiji, to please make clients aware that Fiji has a very delicate ecosystem.
Dates confirmed for FTE2016 Immediately following this year’s expo, it’s been announced that FTE 2016 will be held from 3-6 May. Further details will be announced in the coming months, but don’t forget to pencil in these dates now. Fran was a guest of Tourism Fiji. www.fiji.travel

Samoa STE 2015 by Jonny Dykes
July/August 2015

In mid May the beautiful islands of Samoa once again hosted the Tourism Trade Expo. Trade wholesalers were invited from New Zealand, Australia, Europe, Asia and the Americas to experience what this island destination has to offer. For a week the STA (Samoa Tourism Authority) hosts both travel wholesalers and media companies on a road trip, showcasing some of the country’s most popular resorts and tourist destinations. Samoa has been described as a first generation tourist destination and what better way to promote this island getaway to the world than through the people who have the opportunity to sell it. With tourism being one of Samoa’s fastest growing industries, the trade expo helps maintain this momentum. Samoa is made up of two main islands, Upolo and Savai’i. Inbound international flights fly direct into the country's capital Apia, located on the island of Upolo with a one hour ferry ride or a short 15 minute flight being your options to visit Savai’i. Both offer spectacular coastlines, each almost completely surrounded by reefs. This allows for great swimming, snorkelling, surfing and diving opportunities accessible from almost anywhere around on island. Samoa is located in the South Pacific and so you can expect warm weather all year round, with the average temperature around 28 degrees. As far as rainfall goes, the dry season runs from June through to October. Although the water and all it offers is a great drawcard, both islands have so much more to offer. Whether it be mountain or forest canopy walks that interest you, or swimming through fresh water cave pools and swimming holes, there is an abundance of natural highlights to explore. Turtle sanctuaries, local villages and ancient lava fields are just a few things the trade-delegates were lucky enough to visit throughout the week. Complimenting Samoa’s tourist attractions are a variety of resorts, hotels and motels to suit all needs, tastes and budgets. With this in mind, accommodation site inspections were a major part of the STE trip. Travel wholesalers not only get to see what they are selling but get to experience some of the warm Samoan hospitality so they pass on firsthand knowledge to potential clients. From five star luxury to 2.5 star backpacker style, Samoa proved it has it all. STA has the task of promoting this Island nation to the world and so have worked tirelessly to form relationships with travel agents and wholesalers around the globe. With competition from more established markets around the Pacific, the representatives based both in Samoa and other respective countries have really stamped their mark on the pacific tourism market. With a real sense of culture, family values and traditional living, it is easy to see why the STA representatives and tourism operators are so passionate about their home. The two day expo based in a convention centre in the heart of Apia allowed the resort operators and other tourist services to meet one on one with the travel wholesalers and media to answer any questions about their properties or services they may still have. This year proved to be a great turn out with 42 Samoan sellers holding booths and over 100 agents and media. This opportunity is invaluable to the local industry, to keep Samoa in the forefront of the minds of these agents. Having been lucky enough to be a part of this year’s STE I believe that if people make the choice to visit this idyllic island nation, it will undoubtedly sell itself!

Surfing Samoa Samoa has always had a great reputation for surfing. Although there's an abundance of breaks right around both islands, you will find the majority of them breaking over very shallow reefs. These conditions are generally recommended for the more experienced surfer. There are a limited number of beach breaks which can be found with a bit of local knowledge. On the island of Upolo there are three resorts which cater specifically for surf and snorkelling tours with experienced guides to take you out. If you’re looking for a smaller more personal tour then Neil from Manoa Tours offers exactly that. Neil works closely with most of the resorts on Upolo and also offers snorkelling and hiking tours across the island. The conditions suit themselves primarily to the more seasoned surfer, but there are spots around the island which cater for the less experienced. Surf lessons are available for both kids and adults.

Exploring Upolo The beauty of travelling to Samoa is you can spend your entire holiday on one of the two main islands and not feel as if you missed anything. Upolo has a wealth of natural sites which help fill up your lazy days. A trip around the island following the mainly coastal road will take you over four hours but driving across the island is as easy as driving at home, for me at least as they've now changed to driving on the left hand side of the road. On the doorstep of the airport there's numerous accommodation options that cater for any need or budget. Within an hour of Apia you have Sinalei, Return to Paradise, Seabreeze or Levasa resorts that offer not only truly luxurious accommodation and surroundings but a truly Samoan experience. These are only a few of Upolo’s premium resorts. With the resorts as a base, the island becomes your oyster. A visit to to the To Sua trench, the piula cave pool or a trip up the volcanic peak of Mount Vaea are just a few things you don’t want to miss.

Savai'i You could almost describe Savai’i as the younger brother of Upolo. It’s not as popular, not quite as developed but has a spark in the eye which says it’s matured to the point of forming its own identity. Savai'i is becoming a destination in it’s own right and has recently opened a new tourism office, whose staff is working closely with local villages, resorts and tour operators. Savai’i is catching up with Upollo in terms of visitors to the island. Knowing this it was almost surprising to see that the accommodation offerings are on par with any in Samoa. Beautiful resorts are full of staff from local villages treating you to a glimpse of their everyday life. Alongside the air conditioned gyms and swimming pools, there are opportunities to walk through these local villages, taste their food, chat with their elders, play games with their kids or even meet the mum of the waiter you had last night. It really is an experience, almost humbling, that you don’t want to miss.

Earn your trip to Paradise
Alongside this, Savai’i offers beaches, diving and surfing to rival anywhere in the pacific. It really is a place you can relax with the kids most of the morning and be in the surf or on a fishing boat just after midday. This island offers spectacular churches, lava fields, serene beaches and world class surf spots, amongst so many other things, but what set it apart for me was the warmth I felt from the locals when I visited. Walking along a tree top canopy and swimming in a turtle rescue sanctuary are two highlights Savai’i offers. At the top of the island at Va-I Moana resort is one of the best fishing charters on the island. With the locals fishing this area all their lives, they know the waters and the spots to ensure the bin gets filled. The resort is located on the tip of the island where the currents meet. This is what makes the fishing so good and is right on Va-I Moana’s doorstep. Sinalei Island Times incentive ad 080715.indd 1

Accommodation with a difference Lalotalie is a family owned eco tourism venture catering for the more active, adventurous traveller. It offers traditional fale accommodation on the banks of the Liua le Vai o Sina river. This resort specialises in exploring hidden natural treasures within this part of the island of Upolo. Hiking up the river, jumping off waterfalls and exploring the local village’s plantation are what is showcased. Eating organic fruit and vege’s from this plantation coupled with a western style of food has been described as an added highlight when staying at Lalotalie. Return to Paradise is one of many resorts owned and operated by members of the local village. Having only been open a year this truly is an example of the result of hard work and determination of local Samoans. The resort is located on the site of a movie of the same name, Return to Paradise. Starring Gary Cooper and Roberta Haynes this film holds significance as the first Hollywood film to cast indigenous people in a movie. The Samoan people embraced the movies arrival as it not only put the island nation on a world stage but also bought work for the locals. This year Roberta Haynes returned for the anniversary of the movie. A traditional welcome was put on as Roberta arrived before she was given an honorary award to thank her for her contribution and connection with the local people. With the resort being located on a pristine white sand beach you can see why they chose this spot and why they refer to it as paradise.
Return to Paradise
Return to Paradise caters for both couples, groups and families. Having a safe swimming beach metres from your room, it’s not surprising that although a year old, guests are already returning to paradise. Stevensons Resort, located on the island of Savai’I offers upmarket fale accommodation located over the water. With outdoor bathrooms made from local volcanic rock and being a few metres from the ocean while lying in bed, there is no better place to start your day. International chefs offer a mouth watering menu from their beachfront restaurant. With snorkelling and kayaking right there you will struggle to leave the resort.
Summary of Samoa After spending a week travelling around Upolo and Savai’I for the first time I leave with a strong understanding of the culture and values of the Samoan people. I take with me memories of swimming holes, underwater caves, swimming with turtles and magnificent views from volcanic peaks. Having stayed in resorts that rival any I’ve stayed in before with people who go well out of their way to show you their way of life while making you comfortable on your holiday. As I sit in the airport reminiscing on the week I’ve just had I find myself smiling and planning my next trip back to this beautiful island getaway.

Rendezvous New Caledonia by Amanda Platt
28 islandtime July/August 2015
New Caledonia is renowned for its magical mix of French sophistication and Melanesian traditions. It’s a special destination that offers Kiwi travellers a wonderfully diverse experience across its distinct regions and it’s less than three hours away. Of course the only way to truly appreciate New Caledonia is go there yourself and in late May Islandtime’s Amanda Platt had the chance as part of the travel trades Rendezvous Workshop. I must admit I couldn’t wait to soak up everything this unique Pacific destination had to offer. This fantastic four day travel trade event was designed to give Australian and New Zealand wholesalers and media a first hand look at the magnificent blue waters, white sands and French infused cuisine of New Caledonia. Needless to say, New Caledonia delivered and more. I arrived late at night at Le Meridien, one of Noumea’s premier resorts. The wonderful beachfront property has undergone a fabulous refit and the finished product is first class. The rooms were spacious, sleek and very modern with a blend of French sophistication. The hotel also makes the most of its prime beachfront position with every room boasting ocean views with speeding kite and windsurfers adding to the spectacle. On the Friday morning we began proceedings with a typical French breakfast at the Hilton Noumea Promenade – fresh baked pastries and freshly brewed coffee – yum! Then through the hotel for a site inspection, before visiting three properties - Le Lagon and Beaurivage Hotel and the Le Stanley Hotel. Each establishment is a fine choice for anyone staying in Noumea. The meet and greet part of the workshop was held at the Tijabaou Cultural Centre. Just stepping inside this iconic building is an incredible experience. Designed by world renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano, the centre is named after Jean-Marie Tjibaou, the leader of the independence movement who was assassinated in 1989. Here visitors can learn all about New Caledonia’s history, but on this occasion it provided the perfect backdrop for the face-toface meetings that allowed visiting wholesalers to discover new products and discuss business opportunities with local suppliers. New Caledonia Tourism’s sales and marketing director, Caroline Brunel, pointed out that Australians and Kiwis love visiting New Caledonia as it’s so close and yet a world away. This has been reflected in the first three months of 2015 visitor figures which are up 41.1 per cent for Australians and 52.5 per cent for New Zealand, compared to the respective months in 2014. “The destination has received strong interest and investment from several globally renowned brands including the Hilton Noumea La Promenade Residences in 2013 and the Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Resort & Spa last year. Ambitious targets have been set to ensure that tourism growth continues. We will continue to place a major focus on building brand New Caledonia in the market through strategic partnerships, the continuation of our Ambassador programme with Justine Schofield and an always on digital presence as well as through a number of trade initiatives,” said Ms Brunel. The week-long celebrations also saw pre and post famils for product managers and travel trade, with itineraries including activities across the island paradise, covering the Northern, the Southern and the Loyalty Islands provinces showcasing New Caledonia’s natural wonders.

Thus Saturday was all about adventure. That morning myself and nine others were whisked away to Magenta, Noumea’s domestic airport, ready for a 20 minute flight to Isle of Pines. On arrival we were greeted by the lovely guide M. Jean Christophe Deret, (who was thoroughly informative and very passionate about the island). We saw the Queen Hortense Caves, St Joseph and St Maurice Bays and Voa Village. We also visited the Oro Natural swimming pool, something I will never forget. This place is absolutely stunning, the surroundings are breathtaking and the snorkelling is on a whole new level - this is an absolute must visit on Isle de Pines. Matching this natural magnificence was our superb accommodation at Oure Tera Beach Resort. This resort is set in a most beautiful bay and is home to 30 authentic bungalows which are spread out to ensure privacy. The resort has a lovely outdoor pool with two restaurants and one bar with private beach access. As I’d quickly come to expect, the food is delicious, and setting even better, this resort is heaven for compulsory relaxation. A popular Isle de Pines day trip is a visit to Nokanhui Island, just a few kilometres south. On Sunday morning we boarded a gorgeous speedboat and embarked on our journey, blasting over the bluest of blue waters and passing by bright white atolls. Snorkelling and swimming doesn’t get better and the icing on the cake was a show from a passing turtle. Add in crayfish and salad for lunch – what a trip! Back at Isle de Pines, we toured Le Meridien Isle de Pines and its sleek, sophisticated French styled rooms. Again the standard of cuisine was exceptional – this time an amazing degustation dinner at the fine dinning restaurant. This hotel is an absolute must for honeymooners or anyone who is looking for a mix of luxury and tranquility. The hotel has 50 rooms, a spa fine, dining restaurant and pool all set in the most tranquil bay with sand that could pass for icing sugar! On our last full day it was back to Noumea, where we were greeted by Dominque Lepoul from Toutazimut 4 wheel Explorers. We headed for the southern part of New Caledonia, stopping for lunch at Yate Lake and popping into Netcha Botanical Garden Reserve. Once again the natural environment was quite spectacular. With its red earth, rugged landscape and remote feel, it’s almost like being in outback Australia. The historic Prony Village was a fascinating stop. This place had roots in the brutal convict era, when French prisoners were made to log trees – some of the torture equipment still remains, unused of course! The gorgeous Madeline Waterfalls are also in the area and certainly a must see. After a busy day we wound down at Le Meridian Noumea, enjoying a final dinner at the l'Equilibre the restaurant the Le Nouvata Parc Hotel. As was the case over the four days, the degustation meal was heaven on a plate - well, plates. In four thoroughly enjoyable days, I’d had a small but delicious taste of New Caledonia and what it had to offer – the cosmopolitan cool of Noumea, the rugged southern region of Grand Terre and the unforgettable Isle de Pines. But unfortunately, all good things had to come to an end and it was home to Auckland. Merci New Caledonia – I can’t wait to come back.

Nouvata Parc Hotel Restaurant Opens The new restaurant at Nouvata Parc Hotel opened officially on June 1 2015. The restaurant named “L’Equilibre” reflects the decision to offer a healthy alternative for lunch (market fresh buffet and grill) whilst maintaining the à la carte menu in the evening. The restaurant proposes three options everyday from midday: salad buffet including sushi, carpaccio, quiche and various salads for a light lunch priced at XPF 1700. Add a delectable selection of desserts to the salad buffet for XPF 2500. The cost for the salad buffet plus desserts plus a choice of chicken, beef or fish cooked on the grill is XPF 3900. Chef Mathieu Morin, has created an à la carte menu for evening dining which incorporates a combination of local produce and French inspired cuisine. The chef’s suggestions are renewed every two weeks featuring three new entrees and mains to choose from. On Friday evenings, the hotel organises its traditional seafood buffet and Tahitian dance show which after 15 years has become an institution in Noumea. L’Equilibre has been completely refitted and renovated, featuring a modern and stylish décor and offers alfresco dining either beachside or poolside. The restaurant also boasts a new wine cellar with over 130 labels. Sommelier Yannis Kherachi, who graduated from ‘Le Clos d’Or’ hospitality school in Grenoble, France and then continued his studies in oenology to become an expert in wines, gives advice to guests dining at the restaurant on the best wine match for their menu choice. Wine can be ordered by the glass or by the bottle. Guests staying at Nouvata Parc Hotel receive 15% discount on food (excludes beverages) when dining at the restaurant for lunch and dinner (this offer excludes breakfast and snacks/tapas at the bar). Recently renovated and located alongside the restaurant beachside is the trendy “Code Bar”. The bar offers a large selection of cocktails and wine by the glass and is the perfect spot to watch the sun set. A comprehensive snack menu is available throughout the day with an impressive tapas menu for after work drinks. Code Bar provides entertainment during the week including a salsa dance evening every Wednesday, a live music band every Thursday and a popular Karaoke evening on Sunday. The restaurant refit has meant that the hotel now boasts a further meeting room, located poolside and featuring natural light and the latest AV equipment. This recent addition increases the number of conference rooms available at the hotel which already is renowned for having the largest meeting capacity in Noumea.

American Samoa
Whale watching season starts It’s that time of year again (July to December) when humpback whales visit American Samoa on their grand migration north from their feeding areas in Antarctica to our warm South Pacific waters to give birth. This annual occurrence attracts locals and visitors who keep a constant look out for these remarkable creatures. Although whales appear as early as July and as late as December, prime whale watching months are September and October. What makes whale watching in American Samoa ideal is that our coral reef extends out roughly 200 feet and then drops dramatically, so you could literally whale watch from shore without a pair of binoculars! The Top 5 Best Sites on island for whale watching are Aunu’u Island, Amouli Beach Fales, Tisa’s Barefoot Bar, Larsen’s Bay, and Sliding Rock (Taputimu).
National Park offers free Saturday hikes American Samoa is a top spot for hikers and now it just got better! The National Park of American Samoa is offering free ranger-led Saturday hikes through to mid-September, with free shuttles to transport hikers from their visitor center in Pago Pago to the trails. Five different hikes are being offered and will provide participants with opportunities to experience the national park within the lush tropical rainforest with vistas that overlook Tutuila. National Park Rangers will lead these hikes and share a variety of fun topics about the natural and culture wonders of American Samoa. “We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors to their national park,” said Chief of Interpretation and Education Michael Larson. Please note though that space is limited to 28 participants per hike - sign up is required by email npsa_info@nps.gov.

The festivities marking this Anniversary will begin with an opening church service, raising of the flag, and will end with traditional speeches and dancing to commemorate this historical event.

Norfolk
The Castaway is back in business An iconic piece of Norfolk Island has been given a new lease on life. After months of renovations, the doors to the enhanced accommodation are open. New owners Sarah and Tony Watts have added a new level of quality and comfort to the buildings, while maintaining the unique features of the accommodation by recycling and restoring where possible. The centrally located property makes the most of the sweeping mountain and ocean views - rooms and apartments overlook the garden’s towering banyan tree and across the water to Philip Island. At the front of the property sits the new Breakfast Café and Bar, its sun drenched patio welcoming visitors as they arrive - the perfect place for a relaxed breakfast before a day exploring the fascinating historic, cultural and natural features of Norfolk Island or for a relaxing drink at the end of a day in paradise. www.castawaynorfolkisland.com

Solomon Airlines takes flight from Sydney When the long-awaited direct service from Sydney to Honaira, Solomon Islands left the ground on June 2, it marked a milestone moment for Solomon Airlines, and opened up exciting business and tourism links between the two countries. A host of VIP passengers from the Solomon Islands were on board to celebrate the significant event, including Minister of Culture and Tourism Batholomew Parapolo, New Zealand High Commissioner Marion Cranshaw, and airline chairman Denton Rarawa. Solomon Airlines CEO, Captain Ron Sumsum marked the inaugural flight by taking the helm, landing the Airbus A320 smoothly on the runway, where the plane received a traditional water cannon salute. Solomon Airlines General Manager Gus Kraus said the flight’s inauguration represented a pivotal moment in Solomon Airlines’ proud 53-year history. “This new service not only paves the way for an even closer relationship between the Solomon Islands and Australia, it also has great significance for the prospect of increased trade and business links between our two countries,” he said.
Solomon Islands Tourism takes the next step in tourism The Solomon Islands has shown its commitment to increased tourism in the region with the release of the National Tourism Development Strategy. Officially launched by Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, the strategy will be rolled out over five years and outlines the government’s commitment to developing the country into a unique tourist destination, by evolving the sector and encouraging international visitors. The Prime Minister says while the target of a nine percent growth in visitor numbers may seem modest, it will require sustained commitment backed by strong leadership, increased investment and additional government and donor resourcing. Visitors Bureau CEO Josefa ‘Jo’ Tuamoto has played a key role in shaping the strategy. He says while the targets are small compared to neighbouring nations, they are a serious step by the government. “Given the Solomon Islands’ traditional sources of wealth are now well into sunset mode, tourism growth has become a priority area for the economic and social well-being of the country,” he said.
Retreat to Papatura Island On the north west coast of the Solomon Islands’ longest isle is Papatura Island Retreat, the perfect place to step off the map. Easy to get reach with Solomon Airlines’ flights to Suavanao, running three times a week, followed by a short boat ride to Santa Isabel. The retreat includes two double-story loft bungalows with en-suites (wheelchair options available), two twin beach bungalows and two family bungalows. And for those wanting a romantic getaway ‘The Sunset’ has both an indoor bathroom and a private deck featuring outdoor loungers, day beds and a private outdoor shower. But best of all, with no more than 22 guests staying at the resort at one time, Papatura is an idyllic place to fish, surf, and explore. Visit local villages, take an Amazon-like river experience or simply relax in a special place the rest of the world has yet to discover. www.papatura.com.

Yachting in Vava’u Each year from June to November, over 500 private yachts head to Vava’u, now recognised as one of the world’s great cruising destinations – right up there with the Bahamas. A myriad of deep channels, waterways, encircling reefs and secluded anchorages make it a safe and sheltered ground. Abundant fish life, clear water with visibility of up to 50 metres and one of the best harbours in the South Pacific – the aptly named of Port of Refuge – complete the picture. In short, it is paradise. Several operators offer yachting experiences from a few hours to a week or more. Visitors can share a scheduled trip, hire a boat and skipper or experienced sailors can enjoy a barefoot charter. Various designs and sizes of boats are available. Cruising in Vava’u is considered easy with sheltered waters and plenty of anchorages, and it’s always possible to find a secluded spot for the night. Visitors are welcome in the local villages and unlike most destinations, no payment is expected on entry. A fish or two always goes down well though!

‘Eua. Off the beaten track ‘Eua is for adventurers and eco-tourists. Often referred to as the forgotten island. ‘Eua is the least developed in the Kingdom of Tonga. Infrastructure and visitor facilities are minimal but the island offers sensational diving and the chance to see truly unspoilt beauty. Easily accessible from Tongatapu, it is only an eight-minute flight (the shortest commercial flight in the world) or a 2.5 hours boat trip.
The Hideaway, 'Eua
Diving Cathedral Cave For those looking for adventurous diving, ‘Eua has it. With pristine reefs, abundant fish life and underwater caves and tunnels, it has it all – including underwater visibility often stretching to 50 metres or more. Cathedral Cave is for experienced divers. Dropping to a depth of 25 metres, divers approach the cave entrance, a large horizontal slit in the reef and edged inside. The cave roof collapsed thousands of years ago, so rays of light descend the depths and play on the cave floor. Divers can venture about 75 metres back in to the cave - it’s a real adrenalin buzz and must do for dive fans.

Niue
Humpback Whales arrive in Niue Magical Niue makes it mark
Kiwi couple Rami Oved and Julz Evans have boosted Niue’s tourism capacity, after moving to the island from New Zealand late last year. The couples new business Magical Niue Sea Adventures is now open, taking bookings and adding to the variety on the island. The company offers educational sea tours, whale watching, underwater scooters, glass bottomed kayaks and subwings, as well as running a car rental company and manicure/ pedicure salon. And if that wasn’t enough they’ve added to Niue’s accommodation inventory with Kaliki Lodge. www.magicalniue.com
Old friends Falcon, Gentoo, Stumpy and Alofa recently returned to the warmer waters of Niue to calve and mate during Niue’s whale season. A whale sanctuary since 2003, the beautiful waters of Niue have long been a favoured place for Oceania Humpback Whales. Niue’s pristine waters are on the migratory path of the Oceania Humpback Whale, which starts in July and lasts until September, giving visitors the chance of a whale encounter like no other. Because of Niue’s reef and water clarity, whale watching from land is possible as the humpback whales swim as close as 50 metres from the shore line, having travelled 5000 kilometres to get to tropical waters during the Southern Hemisphere’s winter months.
“Our trips begin with a presentation about the humpback whales behaviour and migratory patterns. Once on the water there is the opportunity to float alongside a mother humpback whale and her calf. We have had snorkelers spend up to half an hour with a mum and baby. We are so fortunate to have them allow us to get so close!” sheb adds. The whale watching trips are now underway on Niue and run until September. They start in the morning, run for four hours, and cost around $150 per person. The following tourism providers offer experiences with the humpback whales: • Niue Dive: www.dive.nu • Magical Sea adventures: www.magicalniue.com/whale-watching • Fish Niue Charters www.niueisland.com/content/whale-watching

Vanuatu
Vanuatu Helicopters gives a big helping hand It has been a busy couple of months since March 13th when Cyclone Pam ripped through Vanuatu. As you’d expect it’s been ‘all hands to the deck’ and one of those companies making a huge contribution is Vanuatu Helicopters. Vanuatu Helicopters is part of Christchurch based Garden City Helicopters. Following the cyclone they repositioned two helicopters from New Zealand to assist with the initial emergency relief work. One helicopter has recently been flown back to New Zealand while a second helicopter is still being used here. Until recently they’ve been busy with emergency relief work, including distribution and lifting of food and water and supplies to remote devastated villages. They also flew Medivac flights from a few of the remote islands. There is still plenty of recovery work in progress as the country rebuilds. A lot of the distribution of relief is being transported out by local shipping and road transport, also a number of foreign boaties, yachts and even superyachts who have come here to donate their time and vessels in recent weeks also.
New Zealand announces major recovery package In a big boost for Vanuatu, New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray has announced a $26 million package, aimed at helping the tourism sector in Vanuatu recover following Cyclone Pam. “Tourism accounts for 20 per cent of the Vanuatu economy and employs 26 per cent of the labour force. Getting the tourism sector back up a running is vital to Vanuatu’s long-term recovery from Cyclone Pam,” Mr McCully said. The funding is split into two distinct parts. A $10 million package which will help restore confidence in Vanuatu as a tourist destination and a $16 million programme of infrastructure redevelopment, focused on the waterfront and cruise ship precinct in Port Vila. “Our support for the redevelopment of the waterfront will greatly improve the cruise ship visitor experience and better connect the cruise ship precinct with local tourism operators and markets. “This investment will also help ensure these vital facilities are able to cope with growing arrival numbers and are more resilient to future storms and extreme weather events,” Mr McCully said.
“We have been assisting with the communication towers across the country that were heavily affected by the cyclone on the outer and remote islands. We’re also currently assisting in building new communications tower on Erramango Island. We will continue to assist with any future relief work, as required,” says Paul O’Brien from Vanuatu Helicopters. “Much of the visual impact of the vegetation that was stripped by the cyclone is regrown and now certainly looks much better. The local markets are seeing more produce available. Plus most resort and tourism based companies are open for business. Cruise ships are calling again and as part of our core business we’re operating scenic flights, which we offer to cruise ship guests and other visitors. The country is definitely open for business. Come and visit,” says Paul.

Moorea. The magical island A few minutes from the island of Tahiti by plane, and only 30 minutes by high-speed catamaran, Moorea soars magically out of the ocean in an explosion of green velvet what you would imagine a South Seas island to be. A wide, shallow lagoon surrounds the island's vertical mountains where poetic threads of waterfalls tumble down fern-softened cliffs. Peaceful fields flanked by pinnacles of green will fill your senses and renew your belief in the majesty of nature. Pastel-painted houses surrounded by gardens of hibiscus and birds of paradise, circle the island in a fantasy of happy, yet simple villages. Moorea means "Yellow lizard". It is the perfect place whether you want to relax or indulge in its unforgettable and privileged marine life. Although there is a bus service most visitors take advantage of the ‘ring road’ and not being able to get lost to hire a car, scooter or fun roadster. Most restaurants will provide free shuttle transfers for guests with reservations so it is easy to enjoy dinner at a different location every night. One of the most popular restaurants would be the Moorea Beach Café – perfect for sunset cocktails! Moorea has a wide variety of activities from golf, horseriding, canyoning, quad bike tours, 4WD safari, parachuting, the Tahiti Aromes factory and the Rotui juice factory to name but a few. With such an abundant lagoon there are a number of ways in which you can experience the sealife including helmet diving, whale watching excursions (in season), swimming with the sharks and rays, jetski tours, diving, deep sea fishing etc. For those who wish to do nothing there is always an empty sun lounger or you could book a spa treatment at one of the four hotels: Intercontinental, Hilton, Sofitel or Moorea Pearl Beach Resort.
Dolphin experience a Moorea must-do Getting up close to dolphins is an unforgettable experience for anyone and on Moorea you have the perfect place to do it. Located at the InterContinental Moorea Resort and Spa, the Moorea Dolphin Center has offered unique interactive and educational programmes for over 20 years. Each one allowing guests to learn about marine mammals and better understand their ecosystem under the supervision of professional trainers. The programmes allow for varying degrees of interaction – from a shallow water experience to a deep water experience to actually getting in and swimming with these beautiful creatures. On top of providing this wonderful entertainment, Moorea Dolphin Centre also undertakes numerous education and research projects in the local community.
Albert Tours. The way to see Moorea. Nobody has been in the Moorea tour business longer than Albert Tours. In fact they’ve been at it since 1962. A great introduction to Moorea is Albert’s Circle Island Tour. As the name suggests, this 4 hour guided bus tour takes visitors on a circuit of the island visiting popular attractions such as The Belvedere panoramic viewpoint, Cook’s Bay, Opunohu Bay, the island’s volcanic caldera and an ancient Polynesian marae. Albert Tours also operate a 4WD tour which is a great way to discover the island’s volcanic landscape, and for offroad adventurers there’s an ATV Tour on either quadbikes or all-terrain vehicles. Albert Tours also have their fair share of water based excursions. These include a selection of jetski tours and a deluxe 6-hour boat tour that gives visitors the chance to see rays and sharks, land on a private motu and enjoy a sumptuous lunch. Albert Tours can also arrange private tours for families or larger groups, they provide transfers and vehicle rentals. In other words, they have everything on Moorea covered!

New video highlights the Cooks experience As more and more consumers do their research online, video content has become a key method of getting the right message across. And Cook Islands Tourism is one organisation making the most of this media. The have recently produced a humourous six minute video featuring two local boys who take viewers though the top 10 reasons to visit the Cook Islands. The video has been promoted via social media, plus you can see it by going to You Tube – search Katu Kanga. To date it has had over 16,000 hits and counting!
Atiu. The island of birds. While Rarotonga and Aitutaki take a majority of the Cook Island’s visitors, there are some interesting options for those willing to go further afield. They include the small island of Atiu. Around 50 minutes flying time northeast of Rarotonga is the small island of Atiu. It’s probably best known for its abundant birdlife, which makes it popular spot for nature lovers. The island is also the location of some impressive cave systems that have been formed by the upward movement of the islands’ ancient reef. These caves are now hidden within thick forest and many lie on private land so enlisting the services of a good guide is essential. For visitors seeing these caves is a must-do. Atiu is also home to a local coffee producer. Atiu Coffee was introduced to the island in the 19th century and was an important export. Today visitors can take tour of the Atiu Coffee Factory, which of course ends with a delicious cuppa!

Yoga on the menu at Muri Beach Club Muri Beach Club Hotel is fortunate to have their very own Yogi - Yogi Maya - who conducts yoga classes at the hotel every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Her classes have been so well received the hotel has now created a dedicated Yoga Holiday Package. This holiday will provide a perfect balance of relaxation, inspiration and physical invigoration. A typical day begins with the simple pleasure of enjoying a fresh drinking coconut, followed by a calming aromatic yoga session and finished off with an afternoon massage - to soothe the muscles and lull the participant into a blissful sleep under the palm trees.
