Sailing on a

sea of dreams By Jackie McDermott

From the time Captain Bligh and Captain Cook found their way to Tahiti, this extraordinary group of islands have maintained a mystique as a paradise on earth. Today, travellers can experience the same remarkable beauty that seduced these original visitors and they can do it by sea just as they did. The Windstar Cruises brochure describes their Tahiti cruise as “…the perfect way to experience the true wonder of Tahiti. We’ll let the trade winds fills our sails as we visit one legendary island after another…” Sometimes marketing blurbs can be a little overdone, but with a lead-in like that I made my way to Tahiti with the highest of hopes. My chosen cruise was Windstar’s Dreams of Tahiti onboard the MSV Wind Spirit. A 7 day itinerary that started in Papeete with visits to Moorea, Tahaa, Raiatea, Bora Bora and Huahine, before returning back to Papeete. Windstar Cruises specialise in small ship cruising. They provide an intimate experience that won’t see you crammed in with a couple of thousand other passengers. In fact, at 100 percent capacity, the Wind Spirit caters to just 148 guests in 73 deluxe, ocean view staterooms, plus 1 deluxe Owner’s Suite that comes with queen beds and its own dining/sitting area. Being small comes with numerous advantages. Obviously you don’t get the throng of people that you’ll find on the big cruise ships. Because the numbers are so small, you get to know and make friendships with fellow passengers and you get to know all the crew, which makes for a much more personalised service. On top of that, a small vessel like the Wind Spirit can take you into waters a large cruise ship could never hope to navigate. And so after a very easy embarkation process I was warmly welcomed on-board. In fact, from the moment you step on, the warmth of the crew was obvious. Every guest is made to feel special, like you’re part of a family. This wonderful hospitality goes all the way to the top with Captain Ricardo Pizon and his Hotel Manager, Jeffrey Jack, mixing and mingling throughout the cruise. ©Windstar Cruises

Comfort in every cabin Accommodation Features: • Queen size bed with luxurious linens • Waffle weave robe and slippers • Flat screen TV with DVD player • Fully-stocked mini bar/refrigerator • Safe • Direct dial phone • L’Occitane bath amenities • Wi-fi (internet cards can be purchased at reception)

• Fresh flowers • Fresh fruit • Granite vanity with magnifying mirror and chair • Mirrored closet with ample drawer space • Bathroom with granite countertop and shower • 110/220 outlets

So first impression? Wow! With the safety briefing carried out, each passenger receives a complimentary snorkel and mask for their use during the journey – essential equipment when you’re about to make your way through some of the world’s most beautiful waters! Leaving Papeete, we enjoy the signature sail away with the Columbus ‘Conquest of Paradise’ theme music as the backdrop – if you don’t know the music, Google it and you’ll recognise it straight away. The sight of 6 huge white sails unfurling on the four masts was quite magnificent and we literally glide out of the harbour and onto our exciting adventure. The first port of call is Moorea, “The Magical Island”. It’s hard to imagine a place more picturesque. Gaps in the surrounding reef give way to protected bays that sit against a backdrop of deep green volcanic peaks that have been chiselled by oceanic elements for over a million years. Coconut palms sway in the wind and schools of fish meander through light blue lagoons. Not surprisingly, Moorea is a watersports paradise and Windstar guests have every opportunity to make the most of it. Snorkelling, stand-up paddle boarding you name it, you can do it. You can even swim with the dolphins that call this place home. If you’re not the active type or would just prefer to chill out, the Wind Spirit has everything you need for some first class relaxation. Next stop is the island of Tahaa, which shares the same lagoon with its sister island Raiatea. Again, Tahaa is an underwater paradise – the multi-coloured coral gardens providing a playground for snorkellers and divers. Tahaa is also known for its abundance of vanilla as your nose will certainly tell you. The fragrant air is quite amazing. Windstar also offer numerous land excursions. The off road adventure is a popular way to see the island and the famous black pearl farms are also interesting to visit. Again, relaxing onboard is always an option, however, you do miss the chance to get a taste of the local way of life and talk to the Tahitians themselves, so it is worth making the effort to explore.

Photo: Gergoire Le Bacon

Late in the day we pull up anchor and make the short trip over to Raiatea. There are more chances to get in the water, plus you can go on-land and explore the lush tropical forest. The evening is finished off with a glorious barbecue dinner on the deck. Watching the sunset and then seeing the stars come out. It doesn’t get much better.

Speaking of food, the quality and choice of cuisine was quite phenomenal. It would be impossible to pick a highlight, there were so many. From the champagne that welcomed dinner in the Amphora Restaurant to barbecue delights such as lobster tails, suckling pig, New Zealand lamb and fresh local fish. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, the food was amazing and being a small ship the service was personal and very professional. Next stop, the iconic island of Bora Bora. Home to some of Tahiti’s finest resorts, Bora Bora has long been a playground for the rich and famous - Hollywood stars, business moguls, you name them they’ve stayed there. When you sail in, you can see why it attracts people. Dominated by two spectacular peaks, the views are something that will stay with you forever. For Windstar guests there are plenty of options to get out and amongst this special place. The 4x4 tours are a great way to explore the island and get to some of the best vantage points. You can go on a jetski snorkel safari which includes an encounter with the stingrays that frequent these waters – don’t worry, they might be big, but they are quite harmless! And for underwater adventurers there’s an aqua safari which takes in some of the islands best spots. If you’d like to stay on top of the water, the glass bottom boat tour gives you a fish-eye view of all the sub-marine wonders, giant coral and over 300 species of fish. With that kind of setting, it’s pretty tough to leave, however one of the advantages of cruising is being able to experience a variety of places. And with a fond farewell to Bora Bora, it was off to Huahine. Nicknamed the Garden of Eden, Huahine is famous for its lush forest, tropical landscapes and quaint villages. The Highlights of Huahine tour gives passengers the chance to explore the island. This includes a visit to a vanilla stall and a quick lesson about the drying process and how it is turned into a fragrance. You’ll also visit Maeva Marae, one of Tahiti’s best preserved archaeological sites, plus there’s a stop at the Belvedere Lookout which is a top spot to take a stunning photo. Back onboard, we were treated to a wonderful show of nature. First a pod of dolphins swam by us and then a whale and her calf frolicked in the water less than 50 metres away. It was a memorable ending to an unforgettable 7 days. I’d come to Tahiti with high expectations, but would it match up to the marketing blurb? I’m glad to say the Windstar experience in Tahiti was all they said it was and a whole lot more.

MAKING THE MOST OF AN OVERNIGHT If you’ve booked a cruise in Tahiti, chances are you’ll need to book some accommodation either side of it. As you might expect there are plenty of options to spend the night. Or two or three nights if you’ve got time to stay on longer and enjoy what the island has to offer.

Le Meridien Tahiti Sitting just 15km from Papeete and 10km from the airport, Le Meridien Tahiti (not to be confused with Le Meridien Bora Bora) was built back in 1998, but fully renovated in 2011. The location boasts a fine beachfront spot which is a great place to take a dip, plus the resort has a unique sand bottom pool that provides a sea-like swimming experience too. There are numerous room types from garden rooms to overwater bungalows to a topof-the-line presidential suite – so there’s something to suit most tastes and budgets. There are also of plenty dining options including the gourmet Le Carre Restaurant and there are some relaxed spaces to enjoy a tasty tropical cocktail – try the Astrolabe Bar. Apart from being a good base to explore the island of Tahiti, the resort has its own in-house entertainment including its popular ‘Magie Polynesienne’ cultural show. Plus the resort offers cooking classes that give guests hands-on instruction in culinary techniques used in dishes ranging from pastry creations to traditional Polynesian entrees. You no doubt will enjoy the cuisine afterwards too.

Le Meridien Tahiti

Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort Another great place to base yourself is the Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort. Just a short 10 minute drive from downtown Papeete, the resort sits on the picturesque black volcanic sand beach of Lafayette and boasts panoramic views out across the clear blue waters of Matavai Bay. With easy access to Papeete, everything you need is within reach and if you can’t be fussed going far, the local shops are just a kilometre down the road. Regardless of your budget and personal preference, there are a wide of variety of room categories starting from Deluxe Ocean View Rooms through to more spacious Premium 2 Room Ocean View Suites. And like the Le Meridien Tahiti, Tahiti Pearl Resort offers guests a variety of in-house entertainment with the popular Island Night held on Saturdays. If you’re after a drink, make sure you keep an eye out for Happy Hour!

Putting paradise on show

TravelMart Tahiti 2015 by Fran McDermott

In late October, Tahiti Tourisme held TravelMart, its annual travel trade show. The itinerary included a workshop at Intercontinental Tahiti Resort of face to face meetings with local suppliers and then a series of site visits and tours that showcased the latest and greatest popular product on Tahiti, Moorea,Bora Bora and Tetiaroa. Participants from NZ and Australia included Go Holidays, Infinity Holidays, Expedia, Agoda, Fusion, Helloworld, Flight Centre Global Product, Infinity Australia & NZ, Bookings.com, Select Vacations and Our Pacific. After a successful day of workshop meetings and appointments the team embarked on an exploration of the stunning islands of Tahiti where they were treated to some true Tahitian hospitality and excitement. The quality of the resorts was quite exceptional and the experiences were truly memorable. In our next issue we will share our stories and updates with you, so stay tuned for more of fabulous Tahiti.

Robert Thompson from Tahiti Tourisme shares his insights: What was the aim of TravelMart? To further the relationships that exist between the Tahitian plant and the Australian/New Zealand travel trade. Having the famil after the trade day allows people in the trade to understand the intricacies of booking the Islands of Tahiti as well as dispel myths around cost and distance.

How was Travelmart received? Very well by both sides. This is now the 13th iteration of TTM and had one of the highest attendances.

Teresa (Expedia), Gareth (Go), Bec (Helloworld AU), Emma (Misfits) and Bex (Flight Centre) at the Brando One bed Villa pool.

What islands did you visit and why? Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora are always included as they are our mainsells. Product updates are given on each island, and familiarisations for the trade of their main sale products. We always include one of our hidden paradises as well, to highlight the fact that we have many options outside of the main three islands. This year, we were fortunate enough to include the Brando on the atoll of Tetiaroa.

What kind of traveller is Tahiti suited to? All types really. We are traditionally a romance destination, however we have a growing number of groups of friends travelling, as well as families. Many of our properties now include kids club facilities in their various property upgrades.

Moorea Jet Ski Tours Shark and Sting ray experience

Changes in the market/visitors? We’re seeing the length of stay for Kiwis increasing. We are now averaging 9 nights for 2015, which is fantastic. Coupled with our very high repeat ratio which sits at around 28% for Kiwis, our traffic has very positive indicators.

Best time of the year to go? We are a year-round destination. While the traditional wet season is November through to March, we are generally outside the main weather belt and as long as the traveller is ok with high humidity and temperatures, it’s a great value time of year to travel.

Must see events? Hawaiki Nui, the outrigger canoe race between three islands that ends in much fanfare on Bora Bora and the Heiva Cultural Festival which runs for the entire month of July each year.

What are some common mis-conceptions about Tahiti? Distance and price! Most people are surprised to learn the flight is only 4.5 to 5 hours from Auckland. Our pricing has remained fairly static over the last decade, while our main competitors prices have risen, meaning that now some of our hotel and air packages are more affordable that some of our Pacific neighbours!

Jetstar Flights to Boost Cook Island Economy Jetstar will fly direct from Auckland to Rarotonga from late March 2016, a move predicted to generate millions of dollars of revenue for the island. General Manager of Cook Islands Tourism Corporation, Graeme West says it is welcome news for the industry. “Tourism is the backbone of the (island’s) economy, providing approximately 60 per cent of GDP." New Zealanders already represent 67 per cent of total arrivals into the Cook Islands with 82,000 visitors annually. Mr West said the increased flights with 25,000 added seats will make Rarotonga an even easier destination for Kiwis to visit. “We use the New Zealand dollar and many New Zealand products, so there is a comfortable familiarity for Kiwis.” Jetstar’s regional network, that connects domestic and international flight times will make the service easy for Kiwis outside of Auckland to access.

A Luxury Addition Rarotonga’s Rumours Luxury Villas & Spa is a five star beachfront accommodation, offering lush waterfalls, private pools and tropical gardens. Now it’s further treating its guests with a special offer. Those staying for seven nights at the lavish accommodation can choose to receive either a free nights accommodation or two single day tour packages to beautiful Aitutaki, with inclusions specified on the Air Rarotonga website. The New Face of Pa’s Cross Island Trek Island guide Pa began trekking in the mountains when he was four years old, sent by his grandmother to gather and count leaves and herbs for traditional healing. He became a traditional herbalist and a mountain tour guide. Now in his 70s, Pa has passed the ancient knowledge to his nephew, Bruce Goldsworthy who has taken over the island trek from Pa, who has some health issues. Like Pa, Bruce is passionate, knowledgeable and energetic and he hopes to add extreme hikes to the higher alps of Rarotonga in the future. Pa will continue to take the Unique Nature Walk, a gentle tour that remains dear to him. A good level of fitness is recommended for the cross-island trek, which is not advised for the elderly or pregnant.

Polynesian Airline’s Increase Flights

Hawaiian Airlines Adds Flights

Polynesian Airlines has increased its flights to American Samoa by more than 20 per cent in its new spring/summer schedule. Airline management says the new schedule utilises all three of its Twin Otter aircraft, five days a week from Fagalii Airport to Pago Pago International Airport. The weekly frequency from Pago Pago to Fitiuta Airport and Ofu Airport in the Manu'a Islands has not changed. In other news, Polynesian has temporarily put its Faleolo International Airport to Pago Pago fights on hold while it finalises future route development plans. Travellers can now book and pay for Polynesian Airline flights online using their VISA or Mastercard.

Hawaiian Airlines is adding three special flights to cater for the busy Christmas period. The flights will run on Wednesdays on December 16, 23 and January 6. These will run in addition to the existing Monday and Friday flights each week. Departure and arrival times will be the same as the regular twice weekly services. For passengers travelling from Pago Pago to Honolulu National Airport, Hawaiian Airlines offers a day time check in service open from 8am to 4pm on each flight day, as well as quick web check-in on its website. Passengers are able to drop off their bags between 6:30pm and 10.00pm at Pago Pago International Airport.

New eateries on Offer Several new eateries have opened their doors in American Samoa. Most recently Subs Your Way in Malaeimi is offering custom-made subs with bread baked fresh daily. They also offer soup of the day, salads, homemade pastries and desserts. A&E Café has opened in Tafuna, serving breakfast and lunch with special dinner hours on Fridays. A&E serves island favourites like lamb neck soup with fa’i (green banana) and grilled swordfish. Paradise Pizza is now located in Pago Pago, overlooking the harbour. Their Italian menu includes various specialised pizzas and pasta with options specific to American Samoa. All three eateries are open six days a week.

Transport Upgrade Avis has upgraded its fleet of vehicles in American Samoa with the introduction of 2015 Toyota RAV4's and Toyota Corolla's. The new RAV4's provide plenty of comfort, space and driver and passenger safety. The Corolla is renowed for its reliability and now has a new sleek and sporty look. Avis American Samoa offers very competitive rates with vehicles available for collection 24 hours a day from their airport office or they can be delivered to local hotels and resorts.

New Caledonia Kiwis Embrace Their Neighbours

Ramada Plaza New Spa

Kiwis have fallen head over heels with New Caledonia’s charm and culture. Latest figures show a record 74 per cent growth in New Zealanders visiting the island from the same period last year. And despite New Caledonia being just three hours away, New Zealanders aren’t just popping by. Statistics show they are making the most of their New Caledonian experience, averaging close to 10 nights on the island with many choosing to explore the regions outside of the popular capital of Noumea. New Caledonia Tourism’s New Zealand representative, Sally Pepermans is delighted Kiwis are embracing the nearby island. She hopes the recently launched Hello Neighbour campaign, aimed at attracting even more Kiwis to the destination, will see the figures rise even further.

Ramada Plaza will soon open its luxurious Harnn Spa, which will offer two types of service. The first is focused on the guest’s holistic wellbeing with a range of body massages available using traditional therapeutic practices and pure, natural ingredients. The second will look after guest’s beauty requirements with manicures, pedicures, facials and waxing also available.

Scenic Matavai Resort is building an oceanfront conference facility that is expected to increase visitor growth to the Island. Construction for the 140 capacity function centre will be staggered throughout 2016 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands Visitor Arrivals Continue to Soar New figures released on international visitors to the Solomon Islands have once again exceeded expectations. Data released this week by the Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau (SIVB) show arrivals in May 2015 increased by close to 15 per cent, compared to the same period last year. SIVB CEO Josefa Tuamoto said the increase was the result of a combined effort between the National Tourism Office, the national airline and local tourism industry over the last two years. He says the figures were a major “thumbs up” for their efforts to push the Solomon Islands into the international spotlight. Australian arrivals continuing to dominate the statistics, contributing to almost half of visits followed by Fiji, Papua New Guinea, the United States and New Zealand.

Pack Ya Bags Joins Solomon Islands Product Managers Famil The SIVB is continuing its enthusiastic promotion of the Solomon Islands in New Zealand. As part of the program, Ray also had the opportunity to visit hotels and resorts in the Western province where he enjoyed sightseeing and snorkeling.

Solomon Airlines and Qantas Codeshare The Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau has described a newly signed Solomon Airline’s Qantas codeshare agreement as having the potential to thrust the Solomon's into the international tourism spotlight. SIVB CEO, Josefa ‘Jo’ Tuamoto said the codeshare presented the Solomon Islands tourism industry with a “massive” opportunity. “We have for many years been proactive in promoting the Solomon Islands tourism potential in the overseas markets … but this new opportunity has given us the ability to take our international marketing to a whole new level.”
