A salute to simple. For us, the best thing about the summer break is having the chance to spend some quality time with family and friends. We also get to enjoy the pursuits we’re often too busy to pursue during the year – like reading, surfing, fishing, napping and just doing nothing! These are the simple things in life. But they’re so essential to our well-being. The problem is, most people don’t do them enough. Unless you live in a place like the Solomon Islands or Vanuatu, that is. In this issue, we visit these beautiful islands and experience "the simple life" first hand. In the process, we re-learn a lesson about what really matters.

SPELLBOUND IN THE

SOLOMON ISLANDS By Fiona Taylor

Boys Resort 6Fat islandtime January/February 2017

The Solomon Islands are a staggeringly beautiful archipelago of volcanic islands and luxuriant rainforest. It’s a place where a traditional life of fishing on the reefs and tending lush gardens is still very much the norm. And it’s this magical mix that makes this destination so appealing to those in search of a genuine Pacific adventure.

Exploring The Western Province The birds and the fish have got it right. We people are just fortunate to be able to experience a glimpse of the spellbinding beauty these creatures are free to explore and live in. Flying from the capital of Honiara to the New Georgia Islands which are part of the Western Province of the Solomon Islands is a sight to behold if you are lucky enough to secure a window seat. You are guaranteed to capture a magnificent view of the vast number of scattered coral reefs, luxuriant forested islands and atolls, and the world’s largest saltwater lagoon - Marovo Lagoon - which has also been proposed as a World Heritage site. Your descent onto Gizo Airstrip feels like a birds-eye experience too, the length of the runway is only just shorter than the length of the island on which it is positioned, and not a lot narrower. Once disembarked confinement to an enclosed space, seat belts and airconditioning ends, as in this part of the world, you are at one with the elements and the life it supports. Island hopping in ‘runabout’ boats are the main form of transport and when on the water large schools of small silvery fish frequently sweep alongside you. Pods of dolphins provide excitable entertainment, in fact “another day, another dolphin” became almost a regular catchphrase. And so it was within this environment, abundant with colour and nature resonating, that we explored.

Fat Boys Resort Our home for four nights and a place that felt like a centrepiece in the region, based on its location on Mbambanga Island and the activity and energy it seemed to generate. The views across to the mighty Kolombangara Island and Kennedy Island in the foreground, provide an interesting and ever-changing panorama from the resort's waterfront bungalows. A 100 metre jetty walk takes you to The Fat Boys communal space. There you’ll sit hovering over the lagoon, and it’s where guests and visitors congregate to eat, drink, relax, socialise and pursue various water-related activities. It is also where the local fishermen arrive early each morning to present their catch to the cooks. Lobsters, Moreton Bay bugs, spanish mackerel and red snapper are a staple of each menu, along with the fresh accompanying flavours of chilli and lime. Delish!

Coastal Village Homestays Another choice of accommodation conveniently located on Mbabanga Island are these two solid and separate Coastal Village Homestay bungalows. Spacious bedrooms, a self-catering kitchen, bathroom facilities and wrap-around sheltered verandahs perched above and beside the water’s edge are stand-out features. The adjacent gardens are well-kept and provide some fresh produce for guests wanting meals prepared. For those preferring a broader range of menu options, it is only a 10-15 minute stroll to Fat Boys Resort. A wander through the various villages all within close proximity to each other will provide you with opportunities to experience the authentic village culture and life. You will stumble upon wells from where water is collected, a shed selling petrol sold only by the can and church services where you are welcome to attend and enjoy the uplifting and resounding harmonies.

Sanbis Resort Sanbis Resort is within walking range of Fat Boys and the Coastal Village Homestays, too. And it is an easy 10 minute boat ride from the Nusa Tupe airstrip. There are two main gathering areas - one sitting above the lagoon waters which welcomes the public as well as guests, and offers a full bar service, wood-fired pizzas, cable television and a room full of creative and quirky collected and handcrafted curiosities. A gorgeous island-style pampering room is situated alongside, with day visitors also welcome to receive special treatments. Sanbis Resort offers six separate beachside bungalows, as well as an exclusive lodge which is self-contained, with pebble-lined outdoor spa pool and the resort provides guests with the use of a small motor boat. This resort is full of character with a variety of activities close at hand, including a sandy court for badminton or volleyball, a table tennis table and watersports equipment.

Mbabanga Island

Kennedy Island The Solomons is rich in World War II history and one of the most important landmarks is Kennedy Island. It is a 10 minute putter to this wee uninhabited green-tufted island from Fat Boys Resort. Known originally as Kasolo Island, also called Plum Pudding Island and now commonly referred to as Kennedy Island, it is famous for the exploits of a 26-year-old Lieutenant John F Kennedy, commander of the American patrol torpedo boat PT107 that was sunk following an attack by a Japanese destroyer in August 1943. It was to this island that JFK dragged an injured seaman, and led 9 other crewmen to safety, before being rescued from Olesana Island, which they all had swam to in the hope of finding fresh water, which was non-existent on Kennedy Island. Kennedy’s heroics earned him a Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his courage, and today visitors can spend time at this historic site via regular day excursions, which can involve an outdoor Solomon-styled barbecue lunch and entertainment.

GIZO. The Solomons second town Gizo is the second largest town in the Solomon Islands and the capital of the Western Province. It has a population of about 7000 and is located on the island of Ghizo.

Gizo Hotel Gizo Hotel is perhaps the most westernised form of accommodation in the Western Province, featuring 51 hotel rooms surrounding landscaped gardens and a swimming pool, and many also enjoying balcony views overlooking Gizo Bay. A restaurant and bar cater for both visitors and locals, and island dance entertainment occurs regularly. The food market is situated across the road and tour/excursion operators are in close proximity.

Urilolo Lodge, Saeraghi Beach Since 2010 this family run lodge has been offering guests an intimate and relaxing village experience on the water's edge of the picturesque Saeraghi Beach. The lodge is elevated, self-contained and meticulously clean and tidy. Cute and colourful cotton fabrics decorate the furniture and windows creating a very homely and comfortable inside environment. Outdoors, the large tree canopies line the edge of the beach, providing some shelter and respite from glaring hot sun, and light reflecting off the pearly white sand. Picnic tables and chairs are scattered beneath these shady areas, and their number provide evidence of the popularity of this peaceful location – around 25 minute boat ride to Gizo.

Oravae Cottages For a peaceful and romantic stay on your own tiny coral island, capturing both sunrises and sunsets, the three Oravae cottages are perfect. It is clear owners and hosts, Naomi and Patson Baea have utilised an enormous amount of imagination and resourcefulness to create a unique environment – including an open-plan bungalow with big decks reaching over the lagoon, a treehouse on stilts, and a covered area featuring musical instruments and a hand-made drum kit! It’s a 20 minute boat transfer from Nusa Tupe Airport to Oravae, and on the way guests are likely to catch a glimpse of the boundless marine activity in these sparkling waters. And then you get to be surrounded by it for your entire stay.

The beauty of simplicity In a part of the world where the majority of the population live simple traditional rural lives, the New Georgia Islands offer an impressive variety of accommodation types and a wealth of outdoor adventure experiences that will delight the environmentally aware and adventurous traveller. It is important to remember however, that an especially memorable trip away is not possible without a meaningful interchange from the people who live there and are afforded the responsibility of playing "host". The warm and friendly hospitality was matched with a cooperative and respectful manner and as a visitor you feel welcomed and very comfortable.

Tourism Policy launched A new 2016-2019 Tourism Policy for the Solomon Islands was officially launched in early December 2016 by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare. It sets the foundation to enable sustainable tourism through niche product development and investment, and to encourage partnerships with other governmental ministries, and private sector interests. It has been over two decades since the government has had an official tourism policy. Along with an increase in the tourism development budget, and a determination to facilitate the implementation of the policy, the government is confident that with the support of the private sector, tourism will have a strong and positive impact on the country’s national gross domestic product. The Solomon Islands certainly has huge potential to become an established ecotourism destination. It possesses many of the attractions desired by the environmentally sustainable-conscious traveller looking for an authentic nature-based experience removed from the demands of technology and maddening crowds.

Kennedy Island BBQ

In 2015, over 200 rural based eco-tourism lodge operators and employees were involved in a high-impact training programme aimed at providing much needed support to the tourism sector. Women, community-based tourism owners, youth and small tourism businesses were also participants in this initiative implemented by the Solomon Islands Ministry of Tourism, Visitors Bureau (SIVB) and South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO). As recent statistics presented by the Solomon Islands National Statistics Office show, tourist numbers have seen healthy increases from Australia, the United States of America and New Zealand.

A bright future for Solomon Airlines What a lovely surprise it was to be welcomed aboard my first Solomon Airlines flight by the voice of a New Zealand woman, Captain Claudia Walding. Walding was the first female pilot to be employed by the airline in 2000 and to attain a licence to fly their flagship Airbus 320, achieved about one year ago. The newly refitted interior of the A320 offers economy passengers very generous sized seats with enough leg-room to allow a neighbouring guest to shimmy past without unbuckling your seatbelt. Also impressive are the attentive and professional cabin crew – serving very nice meals, (full service in Business Class) and regularly offering a refill of chilled water. Their role extends to domestic flights as well as international, so familiar faces are likely to been seen when flying to one of the 24 commercial airfields scattered throughout the archipelago. Four smaller planes serve the Solomon Island regional flight schedules transporting both passengers and cargo. Freight lift revenue has increased in the last year and on occassion, surf boards have been known to be strapped vertically into empty cabin seats when the cargo hold has been packed full. Increased focus on staff training and promotions, increased use of the recently maintained A320 and renewed attention on all inflight catering matters are some of the measures planned and implemented which aim to improve business in 2017. Also positive is the third IATA Operational Safety Audit Certification (IOSA) the airline has been awarded following a recent audit - a benchmark for global safety management in airlines.

The family play station By Fran McDermott

Iririki Island Resort

10 islandtime January/February 2017

These days kids are bombarded with modern technology. Ipads, Playstations, mobile phone games – it’s in their face from a very early age. But while it’s just about impossible to get kids away from it all – it is possible to give them a balance, especially when they go on holiday. If there’s a place you can have a quality family getaway, and get back to basics, it’s in Vanuatu. As soon as you get off the plane in Port Vila, you’ll see the difference in lifestyle and priorities. Indeed for your average Vanuatu local, life is a fairly simple affair. The focus is on family, fun and maintaining cultural traditions, not on accumulating flashy possessions. It’s no wonder Vanuatu is considered one of the happiest places on Earth. Port Vila on the island of Efate is the first stop for overseas travellers, and it's the ideal spot to base a family adventure. It's a bustling little town that lies around a beautiful natural harbour. Steep hillsides offer some great views, and the dusty streets are always abuzz with people going about daily chores. There’s a fantastic choice of eateries, and in general, there is plenty to keep the family entertained. Picking a place to stay is one of the key considerations for any family holiday and in Port Vila you'll find some excellent options.

Iririki Island Resort. A top pick for kids There was a time when Iririki Island Resort focused on the couples market but those days are long gone. In fact, now you're just as likely to find families lying poolside as a pair of newlyweds. The resort re-opened in May 2016 after an extensive multi-million dollar upgrade. In essence, everything was improved, plus there were new additions like a hilltop spa and a casino. The accommodation, which has been upgraded too, ranges from couples bungalows right through to their spacious two-level apartments that can sleep a family of five with ease.

Iririki Island Resort

On Iririki, kids activities centre around the cutely named "Pikinini Club" which caters for children three to 12 years. It's free, which is another bonus for the parents. Activities run seven days a week from 10am to 6pm, and during these hours children can enjoy all the traditional kid's club style activities like sandcastle building, face painting, movie time, nature walks, shell collecting and the hermit crab hunt. Outside of the organised Kid's Club activities, there is also lots for the kids to do - the pool complex is set up for hours of watery fun, and with its acres of wide open spaces, Iririki might just be the ultimate place for a game of hide and seek! Bigger kids will love the snorkelling in Snorkelers Cove and there are kayaks to get out on too. And should Mum and Dad want some "us" time, babysitting services are available for guests for a very reasonable fee.

Holiday Inn. A total transformation Like Iririki, the Holiday Inn recently underwent a major transformation, which saw it re-open in July 2016. They’ve always put a real emphasis on being family-friendly and in the revitalised version of the resort, they’ve kept that commitment. For a start, kids (aged up to 19) stay free when they’re sharing a room with parents and utilising existing bedding. Children 12 years and younger also eat all meals free when they order from the kid’s menu in the hotel restaurant, while they are accompanied by an adult. Put those two "kid-free" offers together and you already have a good reason to stay. But then you add in the refurbished "Totel Kids Club" named after the Bislama word for turtle. It’s free for kids aged three – 12 years old and is open seven days a week from 8am to 9pm. There’s an endless array of activities, including art and craft "workshops" that teach kids aspects of traditional Vanuatu culture. Down in the pool, the kids are spoiled, too. There’s a special kids wading pool, complete with colourful mushroom-topped water fountains. The bigger kids don’t miss out either, as there are age appropriate activities organised by the team at the Activities Hut. And if parents need some time alone, the resort has a babysitting and nanny service available.

The Terraces. Apartment style family fun

There’s more to do in Vanuatu

If you’re travelling with older children who’d prefer to have their own space – and you want yours too – then the apartment style accommodation at The Terraces is a fine option. The family choice is the two-level, two-bedroom apartment. Downstairs you’ll find a full kitchen, private plunge pool and second (kids) bedroom with its own bathroom, ie, no need to disturb mum and dad. Upstairs mum and dad can chill out in the main bedroom which has amazing views of Erakor Lagoon. And with Mangoes Resort right next door, you've got a fantastic restaurant, virtually on your doorstep.

Getting out and about While the resorts offer plenty of activity for the kids, getting out and about is a must. Here are a few local picks and one fiery option too!

Mele Cascades and Waterfall One of Port Vila’s classic excursions is the trip up to the Mele Cascades and Waterfall. It starts with an easy 10 minute drive out of town. If you have your own vehicle that’s great, or you can book a tour via your resort, or direct through a local tour company.

The walk to waterfall takes about 20 minutes – there are a few inclines and steps along the way – so it’s not suitable for toddlers or small children. But children of eight years and over should be fine. And any case, there’s no need to rush – you can simply take your time. The effort is worth it though. There are some gorgeous swimming holes to take a dip in and right at the top you can sit in a pool under a 30 metre high waterfall – which is something the kids will never forget.

Vanuatu Jungle Zipline Family flying The lush rainforests of Vanuatu are amazing landscapes to walk through, but imagine having an adrenalin-pumping birds-eye view from four stories up. That's what you'll get with the action packed Jungle Zipline adventure. And it can be enjoyed by kids four years and up. You'll be strapped securely into your safety harness and zip through the lush, cool treetops, plus you'll enjoy stunning views across Mele Bay and Port Vila Harbour. You'll get to cross an 80 metre high canyon, wobble your way across two suspension bridges and return high above a waterfall. Sound breathtaking? Well, it most certainly is, but it is also suitable for people of any age. You can be picked up from any hotel in Port Vila and all you need to bring is some closedtoe shoes or reef shoes, insect repellant, a camera, and clothing suitable to wear a harness. They also run a Canopy Treetop Tour and a Jungle Segway Tour!

An aerial experience If you feel like giving the kids a real treat, why not book a scenic flight with Vanuatu Helicopters. They're located harbourside by the Nambawan Cafe next to the craft markets right in the middle of town. The helicopter itself operates off a floating pontoon in the harbour. Vanuatu Helicopters offer four set scenic flights at varying prices. They start from around NZ$120 per person for a Taste of Vila Flight which takes in the local scenery including the natural harbour, bays, Erakor Island and First Lagoon.

Mt Yasur - The ultimate fireworks experience Vanuatu Helicopters

Parents with older children should consider a trip to Tanna Island. Home to just over 30,000 people, Tanna is a place where visitors can swim in underwater caves, snorkel some of the best coral in the country, ride through the jungle on horseback, visit secret waterfalls and experience a culture that continues to live by its age-old traditions. But the biggest drawcard remains Mt Yasur, one of the world's most accessible live volcanoes. (four-wheel-drive vehicles can get to about 10 minutes walk from the edge of the crater.) This impressive natural attraction is one of the most popular in the Vanuatu, and it's a sight that's not to be missed. The ash-laden smoke has smothered the surrounding landscape creating a scene that's like something from another planet. Like any volcano the level of explosive activity varies, but it's always best to view Mt Yasur at dusk and into the night when the red-hot magma makes its own fireworks display against the dark sky. If you think children get excited on Guy Fawkes Day, multiply this by 1000 times!

Hideaway Island A different kind of mail For a generation that's grown up with computers, the internet and everything else electronic, Vanuatu offers kids a unique way to communicate - the underwater post off Hideaway Island! Just a 10 minute drive and two-minute boat ride from Port Vila, Hideaway makes for a fun family day trip, and of course it's famous for the world's only underwater post office. This laid back little resort has long been a popular spot for divers who have easy access to an amazing underwater wall that drops 100 metres down, but is only 100 metres from the shore.

Hideaway Island

Hideaway also lies in the middle of marine sanctuary, making for an abundance of sea creatures and colourful coral for Mum, Dad and the kids to explore. Any snorkelling or diving gear can be hired on the island and the restaurant is a great place to fill hungry tummies.

Fly, flop and have some fun. By Fran McDermott

Denarau has always been a favourite destination of mine. Admittedly I love it for the ease. Or more to the point, the ease of travelling there with the kids in tow. Depending on the speed of airport processing, you, or in my case we, can be checked in and poolside within an hour.

Sheraton Fiji Resort, Denarau

Convenience aside, Denarau's other strong suit is its choice. Nowhere else in the South Pacific will you find so many five-star properties in such close proximity. They all provide comfortable accommodation, exceptional "Fijian smile" service, and top quality food and beverage outlets. A pavement boardwalk along the Denarau waterfront connects all the hotels. It's a great option for a stroll - whether you just want a bit of exercise, or you want to check out the other hotels and have a cocktail at a different bar.

Radisson Blu Resort Fiji The Radisson Blu Resort Fiji has made an art out of entertaining children, and their kid's club is rightly considered one of Fiji's very best. The kid's club staff (known as the Banana Boys) have got to be the happiest bunch of Fijians on the planet - and that's saying something. Their genuine joy for life is infectious, and visiting kids just can't get enough of it. They entertain them all day, play with them in the pool, go down the waterslide with them - the fun is never-ending! Having said that, Radisson Blu is perfect for adults, too. The resort has recently been through a refurbishment, and their dining options have stepped up a level. This includes the fabulous Thai restaurant, Chantara, which people come from all over Denarau to experience. The accommodation options at Radisson Blu are spacious, and they come with home comforts like dining room tables and sofas. Plus they feature full kitchens and laundries, which is especially handy when you're with kids. This property is a must visit if you have young children, but beware; it's busy, noisy, and filled with plenty of happy laughter! However, you can always find some peace and quiet by the adults-only pool - that's where you'll find those hard working parents enjoying some time out!

Radisson Blu

Sheraton Fiji Resort Sheraton Fiji is another luxurious property in a stunning tropical garden setting on the beachfront. The resort boasts some stylish dining options, including the signature Flying Fish restaurant by Peter Kuruvita. Of all the dining on Denarau, this is one of my favourites - it's on the beachfront so you can dine with the sand between your toes, it has a relaxed vibe, top quality cuisine and attentive service. After dinner, it's nice to wander a few steps and land on a lounger and enjoy the live music at Chime Bar. New additions to the resort include a sushi bar, a noodle bar and a sandwich bar. These provide a fresh, quick and easy fix for a delicious lunch! Being an avid shopper, I've always loved the Sheraton Fiji Resort for its retail. The duty-free and local gift shops, provide plenty of choices, and are a welcome distraction when I need to escape the sun (or the kids). The Denarau Island Convention Centre is also located at the Sheraton Fiji - it's the largest meeting space on Denarau Island.

A fun and highly interactive cooking class where the little ones learn a little bit about making pastry, sandwiches and savoury dishes. And then parents join in later and enjoy the little chefs creations!

Sheraton Denarau Villas The Sheraton Villas are another personal favourite. They have a great set-up when travelling with the kids. This includes two and three-bedroom villas with full kitchens. The villas are perfect for families; they provide space and privacy, and they're not quite as hectic as some of the neighbouring properties.

Westin Denarau Island Resort When you arrive at The Westin, you feel like you are in Fiji. The dark wood, Fijian art work and local style and design are stunning, and welcoming. The property aims to provide its guests with a sense of well-being. The Heavenly Spa by Westin is a good place to start. It's a wonderful place and given the opportunity I would recommend a visit.

Kids Can Cook, Sheraton Fiji Resort

A benefit of staying at one of these Marriot Resorts, (the Westin Denarau Island Resort, Sheraton Fiji Resort and Sheraton Denarau Villas) is you can use all the shopping, dining, bars and facilities at all three resorts and charge back to your room. And if you want to mix your visit to Denarau Island with an outer island experience, you can create a package to Sheraton Tokoriki Island - which will reopen in February 2017.

Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa is yet another Denarau property that suits families and couples. The rooms are luxurious; the beds are super-comfortable. The rooms also look out towards the ocean. The So Spa is a perfect place to relax and pamper yourself - even if you haven't booked anything, keep a look out for their daily specials. V Restaurant is their Signature dining establishment and provides "a second to none" fine dining experience. La Parisienne Café makes a perfect flat white and yummy fresh juices, as well as light and easy café style breakfasts and lunches. For the kids, Sofitel's waterslide is a big attraction. Non-stop fun in the sun!

Hilton Fiji Resort and Spa

Waitui Beach Club at Sofitel Fiji

Port Denarau

This is a first on Denarau, and an absolute must visit if you're travelling without your children and want some peace and quiet. Waitui Beach Club is an adults-only property. There is a lovely pool complex with comfortable loungers and couches, and staff who are there to cater to your every whim. For example, you'll be welcomed by a staff member, who will then accompany you to your position in the sun, or in the shade. They'll lay your towel out for you and provide you with water and sunscreen. Now that's what I call service!

Once you have settled into your hotel and spent a couple of days by the pool, you often feel like branching out. Which is when Port Denarau comes into its own. It's just around the corner, so you can either jump on the Bula Bus, catch a taxi for $7 or walk if you're feeling energetic.

The menu is delicious and healthy - it's been specially created by a top Australian nutritionist. The beachfront a la carte breakfast offers a variety of smoothies to suit your mood or need, and happy hour between 5pm and 6pm sees you served with complimentary cocktails and canapes. The quiet relaxing tunes in the background lull you into a sense of relaxation (or sleep). Also on the agenda should you wish, are yoga classes and a full gymnasium. I couldn’t fault the Waitui Beach Club and rate it as one of my top picks if I have the opportunity to get away without the kids.

Hilton Fiji Resort and Spa The Hilton Fiji is a top property. The rooms have a real sense of style, and all of them look out to the ocean. If you have children with you, the ground floor rooms are perfect as the kids have plenty of grass to run around on, while you can lounge on the patio, keeping one eye on them and one eye on the sunset. The Hilton pools are also very impressive. They have a large adults-only pool, and the option of al a carte adults only breakfast at Maravu Restaurant. Parents will also like the fact that Kids Eat Free with a paying adult. For the kids, there are plenty of activities in the pool. My kids couldn't believe their luck when the activities staff announced an ice-cream eating competition was about to take place. Needless to say, they made the most of it. The adults also have a bit of fun too. My sister won the swimming race one day - her prize a well-earned cocktail! They have water basketball, plus a water balloon catching competition it's light-hearted fun and a great way to break up the day. After all that there was only one thing left to do - wander off for a massage at the open cabana spa near the pool.

There are plenty of dining options - I'd recommend, Lulus, Rhumba, the Yacht Club, Hard Rock Café, Cardos, Amalfi Italian, and there are many more. There is a very relaxed holiday vibe at the Port. For the ladies, you can get your nails and hair done, or have a massage or treatment at one of the day spas. There are shops galore, too. There are the duty-free options, the famous Jacks of Fiji, and one of my favourites, Cloudbreak, where you can always pick up some great boardies and rashies for the kids. There is also a supermarket if you want to stock up on some bottled water or snacks for the kids. And I highly recommend a visit to Victoria Wines, where they stock a huge selection of wine and beer at very reasonable prices. They even deliver to your hotel if you pre-order your beverages. Of course, the Port is the hub for all day trips and transfers to the islands. You will find Adrenalin Fiji, a well-established adventure company who have been in Fiji since the 90’s. They'll take you on an action-packed jet-ski tour, and they have a variety of beautiful boats that offer various cruises. A day trip to the islands is a great way to spend a day, with a delicious lunch and top quality wines included. If you want to splash out, the kids will love the Big Bula Waterpark which is home to oodles of waterslides and activities. And next door there's a mini-golf course and bungee tramps. If you keep going a little further, you come to the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club. It's a great place for a pizza, cold beer and a game of pool. The atmosphere is very relaxed. It's also a great spot to watch the sport - particularly when there's an All Blacks game on! Just remember to get there early as the place does get packed out. All in all, Denarau Island is a great place to visit. On your arrival, you immediately feel like you're on holiday. There are plenty of activities and dining options. You will never feel rushed. And when it's time to leave, you're only a 20 minute drive back to the airport. Too easy.

Tahiti’s spa nirvana By Fran McDermott

Four Seasons Bora Bora

22 islandtime January/February 2017

As life gets busier and busier, more and more people are looking for ways to rest and recuperate. As a result, "wellness" travel is now one of the fastest growing niche markets in global travel. And in the South Pacific, the luxury spas of Tahiti are the perfect place to find that harmony you’re searching for.

Manahau Wellness Centres The Manahau Wellness Centre at Le Meridien Bora Bora is a great place to start your Tahitian spa adventure. Simply being on beautiful Bora Bora is relaxing all by itself, but when you mix in the wellbeing rituals at Le Meridien, you take rest and recuperation to a whole new level. For a start, their nutrient-rich spa products are 100 percent Polynesian. In fact, most of the spa’s products are made fresh on the day using a luscious combination of local ingredients such as fruit enzymes, Tamanu oil anti-oxidants, sea salt minerals and nourishing Monoi oil (the liquid gold of Polynesian ancestors). Massages, reflexology, body polishes, facial and after-sun recovery are all on the menu – and are all amazing. However, if you really want the come away feeling like a new person you could book yourself into one of the three "3 Treatments Packages", which are promoted as a way to enter in the relaxed Polynesian rhythm of life. And who could argue! The Bora Bora Package for skin care comes with a body polish, Polynesian massage and after sun treatment. The Manahau Package for body care comes with a body polish, Polynesian massage and facial treatment. And the Anti-stress Package for soul care comes with a Polynesian massage, foot reflexology and a relaxing massage. Bliss! The Manahau Wellness Centre at Le Meridien Bora Bora

And in just case that wasn’t enough, the resort offers wellness classes that include yoga and back stretching.

Four Seasons Bora Bora Sitting on the highest part of the resort’s motu, the spa at Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is a spectacular place to relax and find harmony. With its soaring 22-metre ceiling, the spa provides a depth of view in all directions. And being surrounded by native trees and kahaia blossom, you’ll feel at peace immediately. Seven air-conditioned treatment rooms grace this fine premise. The ultimate "room" is the spacious Kahaia Spa Suite, which has a glass floor suspended above the lagoon’s pristine waters. This is the ultimate spa experience for guests, providing absolute privacy for a couple, over the tranquil lagoon. At around NZD$1250 for a couple to enjoy three hours of bliss, it’s not cheap, but if you’re ready for a once-in-lifetime spa experience then why not!

Four Seasons Bora Bora

All spa guests can combine their chosen treatment with the natural healing energy of Bora Bora’s climate in one of two open-air treatment pavilions, nestled deep within the tropical grove. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a herbal infusion and scented cooling towel. In preparation for their treatment, guests are guided to the water experiences, where they relax in the vitality pool, steam room and sensory shower. A short time in the relaxation room being the final step in preparation, ensuring the mind and body are at ease and ready for therapy! It’s hard to know where to start, but if you’re struggling to single anything out, try the Kahaia Haven Ritual, the spa’s signature two-hour treatment. This includes a skinsmoothing body treatment with cleansing using naturally exfoliating apricot kernel and aloe, mixed with Tahitian black pearl powder and native fragrant vanilla. Once the skin is prepared, a volcanic hot stone massage follows. This two-hour ritual concludes with a holistic and de-stressing express facial, rich in antioxidants and plant extracts, ensuring the skin is hydrated, nourished and renewed. You’ll never feel the same again!

Hina Spa - Conrad Bora Bora Nui Resort Imagine looking down on the bluest of blue seas, the warm tropical breeze blowing over you, and by the way, you just happen to be enjoying the most relaxing of traditional Polynesian massages. Well, wake up, you’re not dreaming - you’re at The Hina Spa at the Conrad Bora Bora Nui. Set on a sacred hilltop surrounded by lush greenery and black volcanic rock. The Hina Spa offers some of Tahiti’s finest spa views looking across to Mt Otemanu and Bora Bora Island.

Hina Spa - Conrad Bora Bora Nui Resort

The spa’s open-air treatments are also a joy and they give you that feeling of being "at one" with nature, rather being locked a room (all be it a beautiful room). On top of that, Hina Spa uses locally sourced, all-natural products including tiare-scented monoi oil, which makes the whole experience even more special.

Miri Miri Spa by Clarins - St Regis Bora Bora The St Regis Bora Bora’s is one of Tahiti’s jewels - a resort that sets an exceptional standard in everything it does. Its Miri Miri Spa by Clarins is just another example of their commitment to quality. Located on its very own island in the middle of the resort's private lagoonarium, the spa is a haven of peace and rejuvenation. It even has its own secluded beach facing the landmark Mount Otemanu. The five open-air treatment rooms provide guests with lagoon views and it’s here you can enjoy your choice of luscious Polynesian, Asian and Clarins touch treatments. A full range of beauty treatments are available – facials, manicures and pedicures. They have "his" and "hers" spa facilities including a whirlpool, steamroom and sauna. For those who need to raise their pulse, there’s a 24 hour fitness centre with a tennis court and fully equipped gym. And for those who want to lower their pulse, there’s yoga!

Manea Spas Every spa has their own treatment philosophy. With Manea Spas that philosophy is based around Taurumi – an ancient Polynesian tradition that embraces the whole individual in an expression of spirituality, energy, spoken word and particularly touch.

Miri Miri Spa by Clarins - St Regis Bora Bora

In Tahiti, Manea Spas operate at Manava Suite Resort Tahiti, Manava Beach Resort and Spa, Bora Bora Pearl beach Resort and Spa. Traditional Polynesian massage is a particular specialty. These treatments fit perfectly with Taurumi and the belief in using 100 percent natural products made from Tahiti’s flowers and plants, including the famous momoi oils from the coconut palm. Needless to say, these natural, age-old therapies are just what you need when you want to step back from the rigours of the modern world.

Deep Ocean Spa - InterContinental Bora Bora Resort The InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Spa offers a truly unique five-star experience. The position straight opposite the main island of Bora Bora and Mount Otemanu is quite spectacular – even by Bora Bora standards. The accommodation, facilities and services are all of the highest order.

Manea Spas

A very special feature is the thalassotherapy that uses nutrients drawn from Pacific waters over 900 metres deep – and then pumps them through various hydrotherapy massage pools. In short the spa is pure bliss – receiving a massage while you look down through a glass floor into the clear blue Bora Bora lagoon is about as good as life gets.

Tahiti’s Spa Creators When Manuela Paoletti and Carlos de Pino arrived in Tahiti in 2009, they came as specialist therapists for the Four Seasons Resort at Bora Bora. But three years later they would be spa owners themselves! Indeed, after the successful collaboration with the Four Seasons they decided to set themselves up as wellness consultants. One thing led to another and in 2012 they created the Holistic Spa Treatments Wellness Centre at the Sofitel Private Island. Which then led to another Holistic Spa at the Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach, and then Le Jardin Spa and Beauty at Sofitel Moorea le Ora Beach Resort. What makes these spas special is their holistic philosophy based on the harmonious relationship between man and nature. Through the spa, guests experience the regenerating properties that nature can provide, and they can immerse themselves in the richness of holistic treatments and Zen activities. Typical treatments include: shiatsu, foot reflexology, thai massage, specialised pregnancy massage, cranio sacral and Traditional Polynesian massage. As well as nurturing body treatments, after sun recovery, facial treatments, manicure and pedicure. On top of that, they provide classes of: yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, meridian stretching and breathing exercises.

On the signature treatments at the both of Sofitel’s Bora Bora resorts is Watsu - a gentle form of body therapy performed in warm water (around 35º Celsius). It combines elements of massage, joint mobilisation, shiatsu, muscle stretching and dance. The receiver is continuously supported while being floated, cradled, rocked and stretched. The deeply relaxing effects of warm water and nurturing support, combine with Watsu's movements, stretches, massage and point, work to create a bodywork with a range of therapeutic benefits and potential healing on many levels.

Little Polynesian under Pacific Resort umbrella The well-known Pacific Resort Hotel Group (PRHG) has taken a majority position in the iconic Little Polynesian Resort. And as part of this transaction PRHG will assume management of this boutique beachfront resort on the southern coast of Rarotonga. Hotels operating under the PRHG now include Pacific Resort Rarotonga, Pacific Resort Aitutaki, Te Manava Luxury Villas & Spa, Little Polynesian Resort and through the PRHG Partner Program Moana Sands Beachfront Hotel & Villas. "We now have the ability to offer greater choice in the Cook Islands. A choice in locations, a choice in the style of resort, and a choice in the amount our guests wish to spend," says PRHG CEO Greg Stanaway.

Delegates descend on Cooks for KOCI December saw the annual KOCI Cook Islands Tourism trade event host 14 delegates from New Zealand and Australia – but it was the first time a joint Australia and New Zealand KOCI event had been held. The itinerary included plenty of time on Rarotonga to inspect properties and for one-on-one meetings with hoteliers and tour operators. Outside the official business – the visitors had tons of fun on the stunning lagoon, with some also taking a Raro Buggy Tour and Sea Scooter Tour. And it wasn’t just about Rarotonga there was also a trip to two of the outer islands, Aitutaki and Atiu, where the visitors had a taste of what these two amazing islands have to offer and a chance to see many of the properties along the way.

West moves into new Australasian role Last month it was announced that the Cook Islands Tourism Corporation Board had appointed Graeme West to the position of General Manager Australia and New Zealand. Graeme is well-known in industry circles, having spent over five years as the Auckland-based General Manager of Cook Islands Tourism New Zealand. In this new role, Graeme will remain based in Auckland. However, he will be working across both offices. In the New Zealand market he’ll backed up by Marketing Manager Rachel Mackey and Sales Ambassador Danika Cooper. And in Australia, changes will see the office move from its current Gold Coast base, down to Sydney – to be closer to the biggest visitor market and trade partners.

Niue

A vintage year for Niue 2016 was a vintage year for Niue – in more ways than one. The Island’s events calendar featured the return of one popular event – the KaiNiue Food Festival in September – and two new happenings: the Junior Rockman children’s adventure race in April and NiueKulele, a celebration of ukulele music in October that featured an international array of stars and ukelele enthusiasts from throughout the South Pacific. All three drew strong numbers and did much to raise Niue’s profile as a place for fun, food and festivities. Visitor numbers grew in 2016, and, in particular, the island saw a big increase in MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and events) type visitors including fishing, medical, diving and industry groups, and visitors coming back for a repeat visit. Such groups will benefit in the years ahead from another important 2016 development on Niue – the expansion of the Scenic Matavai Resort, which is currently underway, adding 10 more rooms and the island’s first true conference centre to the facility, timed for an opening in June 2017. There’s also been an influx of Niueans coming back from abroad and opening great new tourism services such as the new Hio Cafe overlooking Hio Beach near Alofi. Aside from the Scenic Matavai developments, we also saw the “green light” for the Taoga Niue Cultural Heritage Centre and the development of new accommodation, car rental and food businesses and capacity, along with upgrades to sea tracks and pathways around the island. The seas around Niue drew international attention in 2016 for the unspoilt treasure that Niue is, with the arrival of a team mapping Niue’s waters as one of the last “pristine” wildernesses left in the world. There were a number of exciting firsts for Niue in the food and beverages area: • our very own wine – Moui produced in a limited edition release in partnership with Invivo wines and a Niue beer- Kalaga - made by Harrington’s boutique brewery in Christchurch – both only available in Niue • a prestigious 1st place award at the UK Honey Show – the most significant honey show in the world - for Niue’s very own honey • shipment to New Zealand of Niue’s spectacularly tasty herbs like basil from Mark Blumsky’s hydroponics operation.

Looking forward 2017 will see the fifth biannual Niue Arts & Cultural Festival (April 14-21) followed by the Junior Rockman adventure race for children aged seven-14 (April 21-22), while June 3-5 will see the Ride the Rock road race. Central focus for the Arts & Cultural Festival will be Vahagau Niue – the Niuean language – and the week-long celebration will feature arts and crafts displays and workshops, dance and musical performances, a fashion and wearable arts show and writing events. Ride the Rock, which will coincide with Queen’s Birthday Weekend, features a round-island ride along with five 8 kilometre speed stages. Well-known multisport athlete and five times Adventure World Racing Champ Nathan Fa’avae will once again be ambassador for both Ride the Rock and the Junior Rockman.

New wine has Pule stamp Niue’s first island-only wine, Moui, has quite a story. Niue Tourism partnered with Invivo wines to create the limited-edition wine, a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, which was blended at a special event during the KaiNiue Food Festival in September. Moui has a number of different meanings: it can mean “to grow”, “life”, “to live” and “to bring to life.” The name was coined by famed Niuean artist John Pule, who also designed the wine’s label, which depicts the planting of a coconut. Stocks of Moui Sauvignon Blanc were scheduled to arrive before Christmas and will only be available at the Niue Airport and Niue Bond Store.

New interisland ferry for 2017 The outer islands of American Samoa have a lot to offer visitors, and from early 2017 visitors, there’ll be a new way to access them. Courtesy of the brand new interisland ferry, the Manu'atele. This US$13.6 million vessel was built in the US, and it will carry up to 140 passengers and 15 crew, as well as 165 tonnes of cargo between Tutuila and the Manu'a Islands of Ta'u and Ofu. Scheduled services between Tutuila and Manu'a Islands are expected to begin in January, and the Manu'atele will replace the ageing MV Sili on the route.

Visitor survey to discover travel insights Information is power. Particularly when it comes to assessing traveller insights. So starting in early December 2016, air travellers departing American Samoa on Hawaiian Airlines, Polynesian Airlines and Talofa Airways are being asked to take part in a short tourism Air Visitor Survey conducted by the American Samoa Visitors Bureau. The survey will provide valuable data about visitor activities, where they stayed and how much they spent while on the island. This will also give us an indication of the value of tourism spending by visitors in economic terms. The Greatest American Road Trip comes to AS To mark the National Park Service's 100th anniversary photographer Jonathan Irish is celebrating by visiting all 59 US national parks in the span of one year! He arrived in Pago Pago on December 9 and visited all three sites of the National Park of American Samoa. "I left my home in Washington, DC, with my camera and a few personal belongings in an Airstream trailer for what I believe is the Greatest American Road Trip - visiting all 59 US national parks in 52 weeks to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service. My partner, Stefanie Payne, and I planned this national parks road trip around seasonality. We explored parks in warmer climates during the winter, made our way to Alaska to experience the salmon run during the summer, capture the changing of the leaves in the Rockies and Tetons during autumn, and ended our trip on the warm, beautiful beaches of American Samoa in December, he said. www.thegreatestroadtrip.com.
