ALOHA HAWAI'I

HAWAI‘I EDITION NOVEMBER 2022 How giving back to local communities can enrich your travel experience. MĀLAMA HAWAI'I Travel industry news from across the Hawaiian Islands. PRODUCT UPDATES

Hawai'i looks forward to a new direction.

If the last few years have taught us anything, it's that things never stay the same Of course, recent events have been extraordinary But there are many valuable lessons to be learnt

First, it's that travel businesses of all shapes and sizes need to evolve Sticking to the tried and true will only last for so long

Second, the experiences we truly value are not based on how much we can take, but on how much we are willing to give

When a group of major Hawai'i Tourism operators recently reconnected with the New Zealand travel trade in Auckland, it was amazing to see some familiar faces

It was also wonderful to hear about Mālama Hawai'i a new initiative that encourages visitors to volunteer a small part of their holiday time to help local communities protect Hawai'i's spectacular natural environment

Sure, it won't suit everyone But that's not the point

The point is this new initiative is the start of a new direction that encourages a more rewarding travel experience

It connects people with the place they are visiting, and it also connects people with others who share similar values Indeed, this is what the future of sustainable travel is all about

Mālama Hawai'i - Take a trip where you give back.

The Hawai'ian Islands have some of the world’s greatest beaches, one of the most impressive volcanoes, some of the most welcoming people, wonderful attractions, great restaurants, vibrant bars and is undoubtedly one of the best places to relax and enjoy a truly memorable vacation.

It is a unique archipelago in the centre of the Pacific Ocean with a fascinating history and is blessed with natural assets that warrant protection and preservation

Since early in the 20th Century, Hawai'i has been at the forefront of the tourism boom, but like many destinaio, there has been a price to pay

Reducing the impact of tourism is now a top priority for everyone

Introducing Mālama Hawai'i.

Many initiatives to preserve the culture and nurture the natural assets are being put in place and among the most innovative is Mālama

Mālama is where visitors give back to local Hawaiian communities, and in doing so, enjoy a travel experience that is far more rewarding, and far more memorable

What makes the Hawaiian Islands truly special is not only the stunning natural beauty and vibrant culture it is the deeply rooted relationship that connects them with the land, sea and everything that exists within it

Replanting the Puu Ohia Trail, O'ahu Image: HTA / Heather Goodman

That relationship between people and place grows stronger every time you Mālama (give back).

When you give back to the land, the ocean, the wildlife, the forest, the fishpond, the community you ’ re part of a virtuous circle that enriches everything and everyone including your experience as a visitor.

Visitors are now able to take part in preservation, restoration, caring and nurturing by volunteering for activities that will allow them to experience Hawai'i on a much deeper and connected level.

Through the Mālama Hawai'i Program, visitors could qualify for a special discount or even a free night from a participating hotel when participating in its dedicated volunteer activity

These and many more wonderful activities are providing the opportunity for visitors to contribute to the ongoing health and well being of the wonderful Hawaiian Islands

They deserve their rich culture, their delightful people and their natural assets to be respected, restored and retained by many of the visitors who are made welcome

We can only encourage Islandtime readers to get behind this initiative
