Remember Star Trek's the classic sci-fi TV series? You may recall their mission was to ‘boldy go where no man has gone before’. My Solomon Islands assignment was not quite as audacious as that, but I did anticipate travelling into the unknown. And to be honest, I couldn’t wait. Many of my adventures have been to out-of-the-way places, where you can get away from the crowds and get a feel for life as it is. The eight day itinerary with Solomon Islands Discovery Cruises promised a Pacific Island version of this and I’m happy to say it delivered.

Smiles for miles. When you first step on board the MV Taka, you’ll meet the local crew who will greet you with the warmest of smiles. They’re a little shy to start (no doubt a reflection of the laid back place they live), but in next-to-no-time you’ll enjoy some great banter and a ton of laughs. Relaxed attitude aside, the crew are also very professional. On-board safety is a top priority and each cruise starts with a thorough briefing on the rules that govern behaviour on the vessel. Most of it is common sense, but it’s still reassuring to know you’re in safe hands.

Blood, sweat and tears. Belinda Botha is the owner of MV Taka. Belinda has owned and operated dive operations in the Solomon Islands for some time and these Solomon Islands Discovery Cruises have only come about because of her vision and drive to make it happen. After all, custom building MV Taka into a live-aboard vessel was no small task. Belinda was close to tears when she addressed us, such is her passion for this venture and the Solomon Islands in general. It's a place she loves to call home.

Lazy no. Active yes. If you think you’re going to come on board the MV Taka and do next-to-nothing, this cruise isn’t really for you. Yes, there’s time for chilling out with your favourite book, or kicking back with a few cold beers, but the emphasis is on trying new things and making the most of this pristine natural environment.

breathing. I have to admit that the first few days were a bit of shock to my system, but as the cruise went on, my body did start to loosen up and I began each day looking forward to the session. Funnily enough I’ve kept the yoga up at home.

Surf perfection. The Solomon Islands has been on the radar of travelling surfers for some years now, but as a rule it has remained uncrowded. Most surfers stick to the handful of dedicated surf resorts spread across the various islands. This Solomon Islands Discovery Cruises is not a ‘surf charter’ as such, but if you do like riding the waves you could be in for a real treat. I’ve been surfing for a good 35 years, and still get in the water weekly. I couldn’t believe my eyes when we motored into a sheltered bay and off in the distance is a perfect left hand reef break peeling along a deserted point. Not a single surfer in the water. Unbelievable. My first thought was 'how do I get out there?' Second thought, my mates at home are never going to believe my luck. For a surfer, this was like winning Lotto. One of the crew dropped me off to the break and for the next four hours I had the time of my life. Perfect waves, warm crystal clear water and colourful coral everywhere. Boom. Surfing aside, the MV Taka comes packed with a myriad of water toys such as paddleboards, wakeboards, tube and canoes. You can spend hours exploring the calm, crystal clear waters at your leisure.

Underwater wonders. Scuba divers were the first ‘tourists’ to visit the Solomon Islands. Home to over 900 islands, it’s a divers (and snorkelers) paradise. This untouched beauty has an abundance of World War II relics that now form artificial reefs teeming with masses of fish and an incredible variety of coral. Then add in caves, drop-offs, ledges, turtles, rays and hammerheads!

What a way to start the day.

On this voyage every stop-off point was amazing, but the standout was Mane Island, a small island within the Russell Islands Group. Over the years I’ve spent a lot of time in the water, but without a doubt, this snorkelling experience opened up a whole new world.

Each day started with an early morning yoga session. Top deck of the MV Taka was our floating studio and you couldn’t imagine a more inspiring place to stretch – looking out across serene, blue waters and lush tropical rainforest. The only sounds you hear is the chirping of colourful birds also waking from their morning slumber! Correction. The other sound was the instruction of MV Taka’s resident yogi, who takes everyone through a routine of gentle poses and focused

The visibility was mind-blowing and the marine life literally swarmed around you. If the morning dive wasn’t good enough, the afternoon dive through the famous ‘Leru Cut’ was like being on another planet. This long narrow passage cuts deep into the island. As you move along, shafts of sunlight filter through the trees creating a magical light show. Wow!

Genuine connection. In some South Pacific destinations it’s common for visitors to enjoy their holiday without ever coming into contact with people in the local community – apart from the staff they might meet at a resort. There isn’t anything wrong with that, but in the Solomon Islands, visitors should expect their travel to be much more immersive. The itinerary of the MV Taka was the perfect example. On almost every stop we were met by men, women and children from the local villages, who would paddle up to our vessel in traditional, dug out canoes. Each one carrying a bounty of fruit and vegetables - bananas, pineapples and papaya - all freshly picked and delicious. It’s a simple way of life in the Solomon Islands. And it’s fascinating to soak it all in and compare it to our own busy Western lifestyles. Later in the voyage we have the opportunity to get a deeper understanding of everyday life during a village visit. After tendering to a beautiful beach on Karamulun Island we’re met by an older gentleman who is the village chief. He has a regal air about him and he graciously leads us to his village where the dancers are waiting in traditional dress. The colours are amazing and the performance is quite spectacular. The stars of the show are the children, their big smiles are infectious. Again, the people in the village have a natural shyness, but they soon warm up. After ‘breaking the ice’ they walk us through their home with pride (and an insightful running commentary). They’re lovely people that have been untarnished by the outside world and they’re a joy to be around.

One heck of a wreck. One of the most fascinating experiences on this cruise was the visit to Roderick Bay, where a cruise ship named World Discoverer struck a large uncharted rock and was grounded on the shoreline to avoid sinking. That unfortunate event happened on April 30, 2000. After nearly two decades being beaten by the elements, the wreck is ravaged by rust and overgrown with plant life. Against this unique backdrop we all enjoy a barbeque on the beach, a fantastic swim (with rope swing) and another first-class performance of song and dance.

Walking through wartime. When you’re cruising through such tranquil waters, it’s hard to picture the same place being a war zone. But in 1942, some of the most intense fighting of World War II took place in the Solomon Islands. The Japanese had occupied the islands and had begun construction of naval and air bases, in part, to block the supply line between the

United States, Australia and New Zealand. The Allies countered the Japanese with a campaign of hard fought battles in the central and northern Solomons. It was fascinating to stop off on the island of Tualagi and see some of the remnants of war and hear some amazing stories of hardship and bravery. The American Marines overcame the Japanese command posts during the Battle of Tualagi, but not before 307 Japanese and 45 marines had died. Rusty machine guns still litter the island, along with caves where the Japanese went to great effort to store their ammunition and supplies. Grenades, mortars and even light tanks were used in the fighting and in desperation the Japanese resorted to handto-hand combat when their ammunition ran out. Very sobering stuff.

A trip to remember. Belinda Botha has created an active itinerary that makes the most of the Solomon Islands natural environment, unique culture and rich history. It’s not a sit back and relax luxury cruise – it’s not meant to be. It’s more a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get outside your comfort zone and try new experiences that will leave a lasting imprint. If you’re after a ‘real’ adventure in one of the most beautiful, unspoiled places on earth, quite simply, get on board.

Fiji is blessed with a fine selection of resorts. On the main islands and small outer islands, you really are spoiled for choice and quality. While settling into one of these magical spots is always tempting, there are many more ways to explore Fiji. And one of the very best is by sea. In this case, the Captain Cook Colonial Discovery Cruise – a seven-night journey mixing unforgettable scenery and unique culture in Fiji’s remote northern islands.

The Captain Cook Colonial Discovery Cruise itinerary would take us to places such as Tivua Island, Levuka, Makogai, Savusavu Town, Tavenui Island and Nananu-I-Ra, exotic sounding destinations that would all have their own fascinating story to tell. When you haven’t been somewhere before there's always an edge of anticipation and excitement. This was definitely the case here! Arriving the day before a 1pm departure from the Port Denarau Marina, called for an overnight stay. The Palms Apartments in Port Denarau proved the perfect place. The Premier Executive Apartments are truly spacious and just a short stroll to check in with Captain Cook at the marina.

All aboard! Captain Cook have made their check-in process very easy – in fact, we’re done in a matter of minutes. We ease into ‘ship life’ with a buffet lunch and refreshments served poolside. Then we receive a warm bula welcome and introduction to the vessel and cruise by Ilisoni, our ever-smiling Hospitality Manger. And then we’re off – first stop Tivua Island. Snorkelling, diving, beach lazing and glass bottom boat viewing are all on this itinerary. After our familiarisation, the first evening highlight is the fabulous Captain’s Welcome Dinner. Passengers are introduced to the crew, we receive another warm welcome on-board, enjoy some beautiful food, and finish off with some late night music and dancing. It's a superb start to the adventure. I should also mention that the Captain Cook bartenders are top notch. On the first night they introduce us to the Cocktail of the Day – a ‘Morrito’ which is a tropical Fijian version of the Mojito! Needless to say, Cocktail of the Day was something that every passenger looked forward to!

The first European settlement. Next stop is the port of Levuka on Ovalau Island. Captain Cook provides a wide variety of daily options for passengers. There are tours available morning and afternoon as well as diving, snorkelling and relaxation opportunities. Our choice is to visit Levuka, the first European settlement and the centre of British Colonial Trade and Administration. At its peak over 50 hotels catered to the thirsty sailors, traders, missionaries and speculators that called the town home. This was originally the capital of Fiji but due to the lush green hills and restricted land, expansion here was difficult. Hence the decision was made in 1894 to move the capital to Suva. Today you can still see many of the buildings from this early era. The Marist Convent established in 1880, The Sacred Heart Church established in 1818 and Levuka Public School established in 1879, still stand proud, displaying the amazing 19th Century architecture. In this quiet historic town we also have the pleasure of visiting the children of the Marist Convent Primary School. We are treated like stars and it is interesting to compare the kids simple life to the busy lives of our kids back home. Returning to the Reef Endeavour after a great day exploring, there is only one thing to do - relax with drinks and canapés before enjoying a scrumptious Oriental Feast. Kava and talanoa (story telling) finish the wonderful day. Cocktail of the Day was 'Tequila Sunrise'. 10

Exploring Makogi Island. Thursday’s options include a visit to Makogai Island, with a local guide to take the tour. Here local schoolchildren entertain us with a moving welcome song. Makogai is a protected marine reserve and is well known for its giant clam and turtle nursery. After an easy stroll and tour, we spend the afternoon relaxing or taking the many water actives on offer. Back on the Reef Endeavour we are treated to the (always available) drinks and canapés. The evening’s agenda included a la carte dinner and a fun music quiz. I was hopeful that the Cocktail of the Day “The Blue Lagoon” might sharpen my musical memories, but it wasn’t to be! Another enjoyable day and evening had by all.

Serene Savusavu. Positioned in an extinct volcanic crater, Savusavu is one of Fiji’s hidden gems. It’s picturesque into the extreme. And like Levuka, its colourful history includes the days of South Pacific high-seas adventure. Among these serene surroundings we were spoiled with two must-do activities. A visit to the J. Hunter Pearl Farm and a visit to the local waterfall and volcanic hot pool. Once onboard the tender, we head ashore toward the Pearl Farm. Stopping on the way to watch the locals harvesting and resetting the steel cages with the oyster shells, enabling the cultured pearls to slowly grow. At the Pearl Farm shop we get to see the fascinating process of removing the beautiful pearls – which is the responsibility of a surgeon-like operator who carefully removes and/or replaces this amazing bounty of nature. The specialist from Japan, removes the formed cultured pearl and replaces it with a new bead, which in turn grows into the cultured pearl when replaced in the cages and returned to the sea. The nutrient rich waters of the bay provide the perfect environment for growing cultured pearls. A variety of colours and sizes are produced and Savusavu is the source of the rare and highly sought after 'Fiji Gold' Pearl. We enjoy a stroll around this historic town that’s home to second hand shops, restaurants, supermarkets and eclectic watering holes. From there we’re transported to the local waterfall and volcanic hot pool – very relaxing and enjoyable. Then we return to the Reef Endeavour for another night of entertainment and amazing food. By now you’ve also had time to make new friendships with fellow passengers – this social side of cruising is something you’re unlikely to experience in a land-based resort. Sure you’re not going to ‘hit it off’ with everyone, but it’s easy to meet likeminded people you can have lots of fun with. Cocktail of the Day, 'Yasawa Daiquiri'.

The Garden Island. As we disembark on the eastern side of Tavenui Island, it is easy to see why it’s called the 'Garden Island' of Fiji. It’s literally covered in the most lush tropical rainforest you can imagine. A 40 minute bus tour through beautiful green countryside takes us to the Tavoro National Park. We take a short 15 minute easy walk to the Bouma Waterfall. What an idyllic place. Most passengers took the

Colonial Levuka Church ©Captain Cook Cruises

opportunity to swim in the clear water enjoying this most amazing location with the cascading waterfall as a backdrop. A beautiful setting that’s not to be missed. We are treated to lunch before our return to the ship, in preparation for a visit to Naselesele Village where we share a traditional “Lovo” (cooked in an earth oven) of fresh local seafood and tropical fruits. We are also entertained by singing and dance (meke) and a kava ceremony. Regardless of how many times you come to Fiji, you can’t help but marvel at the singing of these humble people. It really does warm the heart! This truly enjoyable evening ends with dessert and more entertainment back on board our vessel. The famous Olympia Crab Race takes place – no luck for me! Never mind, the cocktail of the Day 'Pina Colada', makes up for it!

A day of rest. Another not to be missed experience was the special choral church service at Wairiki, on the western side of Taveunui. Taveunui Island is on the 180th meridian, the arbitrary line between today and tomorrow. Here, we are able to stand literally one foot in the past and one in the future - two time zones 24 hours apart! Later that day we enjoyed a scenic cruise across the Somosomo Strait to a beautiful beach called The Whispering Tide. Beach activities are the order of the day. That evening after a Fijian Feast, we are entertained by a Fijian style fashion show with music. Cocktail of the day “Iguana”.

Captain Ken Ballantine, Hospitality Manager Ilisoni Vibose

Following Captain Bligh. After bidding farewell to Vanua Levu, we make the journey across the beautiful Bligh Waters, named after Captain Bligh of Mutiny on the Bounty fame. There are opportunities for a whole realm of beach activities, or you can always just relax around the pool if you’d prefer. Dinner was a Pacific Island Night. Colourful ‘bula’ shirts and ‘sulus’ were the dress of choice. After yet another sumptuous meal, we danced the night away and finished off with a farewell bowl of kava. It also happened to be 'Fiji Day' and accordingly the cocktail of the day was 'Isa Lei, Shark Attack and Purple Rain'. I’m not exactly sure what they were comprised of, but they tasted great all the same! Once again the crew kept us all entertained with fantastic singing and dancing.

Homeward bound. Sadly all good things must come to an end. As we head back to Denarau Marina you can’t help but feel fortunate to have seen some of Fiji’s hidden gems and learnt about pieces of history that have helped shape the Fiji that hundreds of thousands of visitors experience each year. For anyone wanting a change from their regular resort holiday, Captain Cook's Colonial Discovery Cruise is a wonderful alternative. And it will leave you with a bunch of memories that are worlds apart from those you’d have ‘on land’. The crew will also make the experience special. In this case, Captain Ken Ballantine, Hospitality Manager Ilisoni Vibose and the entire crew were an absolute joy to be around. Their friendliness, availability, knowledge, and willingness to help, plus their enthusiasm for making us feel like special guests, was faultless. They genuinely care and treat passengers like family.

Captain Cook Cruises have a diverse range of 3, 4, 7 and 11 night discovery cruises operating in Fiji covering the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, the Northern Group plus the Southern Lau Group and Kadavu.

Bora Bora Bucket list bliss. By Mike Hall

islandtime ŠLagoon ServiceAutumn Bora Bora 201 9

Flying into Bora Bora is the most sensational plane trip you will take. The various atolls below provide an introduction to exactly the paradise you put on the bucket list. After landing, your boat meets you on the other side of the airport and the holiday of a lifetime begins. Bora Bora resorts have developed significantly in the last 20 to 30 years, with more over-water bungalows than you can count, as you travel past them when transferring to your accommodation. The mainland, and it’s breathtaking landscape make for a movie-like spectacle, reminding you that you made the right decision to get to this part of French Polynesia. After checking into your accommodation, the fun begins. Sure, Bora Bora is a location of luxury, and we’ll get to that, but the activities and location just as readily lend themselves to an extraordinary amount of activities and adventure. Travelling to Bora Bora can be as far from a 'poolside and chill' holiday as you dictate. The way to start a holiday in Bora Bora in my opinion, is to get on the Bora Bora Explorer Tour. Coco picked us up from our resort and we went out for a full day to get a real taste of the area, the culture and most importantly, the people (not to mention some sharks). Coco’s relaxed approach sets the tone for the humour and the feeling for the day. By the time you’ve picked up everybody else for the excursion, you’ll feel relaxed and will be waving to each boat that passes. It seems everyone knows everyone. The exploring begins in a secluded snorkelling spot just inside the reef, an abundance of fish welcomed by your guide’s fish food for the schools that will soon surround you. If you’re lucky, the same treats will entice a moray eel out of it’s home. We were lucky enough to have this happen, it was extraordinary and obviously the eel was used to visitors, given it’s relaxed nature. The coral is also astonishing. The most challenging thing is getting back in the boat to head for the next adventure – swimming with Stingrays. The stingrays in this area have had their barbs removed, so provide no threat when dropping by to say hello. The walk down the ladder on the side of the boat is unnerving, but once in the waist high water you accept that this is their house. The fish food attracts them to you and the stingrays will brush over feet and legs; and even come up to say hi sometimes. It is truly an amazing experience. The whole time, your guide will encourage and support you through this encounter. All in good humour, but with reassurance. Stop three for the day is the ultimate excursion: to the outside of the reef and deeper water. To swim with sharks. On paper, this looks more shocking than it is. And for some it may be a bridge too far. In this area the most predominant sharks are the reef sharks, which generally speaking, are not interested in, or of any danger to humans. The reason I think this should be the first thing to do in Bora Bora is because it will alleviate any nerves you have about swimming off your own over water bungalow or heading into areas to snorkel that are abundant with fish. This is an activity to help get the most out of the activities on offer in the area. As the boat moors to a buoy, the heart rate increases and food is thrown in the ocean to encourage the black tip reef sharks to come to boat. Heart rate now 165-170. Snorkel and mask on; and some comments from fellow first timers push it up to 185. Then it’s just a deep breath and quick plunge. Once in the water, it’s almost a feeling of serenity as these smaller sharks swim around, relatively oblivious to the visitors in their backyard. It’s incredible how quickly you relax. The reassurance from your guide continues to put you at ease and the proximity of other boats, also doing this type of thing, reminds you that this is a regular thing out here. We observe the beauty of these incredible creatures and see deeper below, a lemon shark. Bigger, but also uninterested in us and we are overwhelmed with the feeling of escaping the everyday. This is a unique part of the world. Beneath the ocean observing it’s beauty, the stresses of life disappear. We reluctantly climb back aboard the boat and get taken inside the reef and head ashore for lunch. Delicious fresh fish (of course) mixed with other traditional fare. All eaten while your ankle deep in the warmest water ever, tables set beautifully on the shore.

A quick lesson on how to crack a coconut and get the water and milk keeps the entertainment flowing. You’ll also learn the 1001 ways to tie a lavalava. Great fun. Then it’s the relaxed boat trip back to your accommodation, ukelele and singing providing the perfect sound track to the perfect day. If you wake up the next day wanting to revisit the glory of the inner reef area, but with a bit of a taste of speed, grab a jet ski and take the 90-minute jet ski experience around the island. Most resorts offer this. Although it may seem on the pricey side for the time spent, it’s a great way to see how small Bora Bora is and also work out your next activities. The landscape is majestic from wherever you are and the local shops and lifestyle more visible from the freedom of your jet ski. This is where the planning begins, to go ashore and maybe climb part of the predominant and beautiful Mt Otemanu. The jet skis are best enjoyed as a pair, their speed limited to about 65-70 kmh for safety and also in cases of shallow water close to coral. With all the adventures going on, it would be remiss to not mention that these activities will be all best followed up by a spa treatment at your resort. We had the luxury of an one-hour massage at St Regis Bora Bora. It is hands down, the best massage I have ever had. Choose the oil you prefer for the massage, discuss your preferences for pressure and away you go. The music was great, temperature perfect and massage, number one.

©Lagoon Service Bora Bora

If you feel like going to the mainland, to either explore or grab supplies, there are boats that go across daily and generally give you a minimum of three hours on land to check it out. For climbing and hiking, an early start is recommended, because of the heat. It takes four to five hours to climb to the shoulders of Otemanu where the view puts everything in perspective. Speak to your concierge to arrange a guide. It is not possible to venture to the top on foot, but helicopters can land up there in suitable conditions. Of course, let people at the resort know your plans and go prepared for different temperatures and conditions. Rain can come in quickly, but just as hastily leave. All activities can be done at your leisure, except the full-day trip swimming with stingrays and sharks. Every resort on the island will provide kayaks, jet skis or snorkels and fins to give you every opportunity to explore the lagoon and the incredible marine life. We had an enormous amount of fun swimming off the private deck of our overwater bungalow. We saw some rays close to where were staying and mixed our time relaxing with other activities inside the resort – tennis, snorkelling in the lagoonarium and even yoga in the gym area. These are only some of the things to do for visitors to Bora Bora. Spend some time looking into all of the options before getting there and look forward to meeting others like you who are having their lives changed by the many great experiences on offer. Bora Bora was definitely one of the most enjoyable and varied places I have ever been. The people of French Polynesia are the backbone of the experiences you will have. There are countless adventures on offer and each one will leave you astounded by the natural beauty of the paradise on earth that is Bora Bora. 14

Luxury for every season. by Mike Hall

islandtime Autumn 2019

As your boat slows on approach into Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, so too does your own concept of time. The overwater bungalows glow in front of a golden sunset and the staff wait on the jetty for your arrival. Tray in hand with fresh towels and fresh juice, this is instantly “resort time”. Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora has a number of different accommodation options, including private beachfront villas of varying sizes, but the most striking are the overwater bungalows, perfectly positioned for sunsets over Mt Otemanu. Imagine sitting on the front deck, eating, drinking, watching sunsets or plunging into the beautiful translucent water. The rooms (all suites) are also configured in such a way that you’ll take in an amazing view from every angle. There may be a moment when you wonder if it’s all a bit over-indulgent – eating cheese, drinking beer and watching the sunset from the comfort of the super sized bath. But chances are you’ll quickly dismiss those thoughts and stay right where you are! Four Seasons is beautifully appointed. The gym is superb, the lagoon thriving with tropical fish, and the outdoor area comes with essentials like kayaks, jet skis, snorkels, masks (and so much more). You could quite literally turn up with nothing and have the best holiday of your life. Interestingly, the concierge area is tucked neatly in the heart of the resort by the private beach area and tennis court. This really helps you feel in no hurry when organising activities or asking questions. The staff are brilliant and everything well catered for. Poolside are cabanas offering the perfect position for shade, cocktails and poolside dining. Again, the service is wonderful. Four Seasons also boasts four fantastic restaurants, from high-end dining to delicious snacking. The Sunset Restaurant & Bar is another great spot that serves up small (delicious) portions of Asian inspired snacks. Breakfast each day is served in Tere Nui and covers every option and every special dietary requirement you could dream of. During the day the Fare Hoa Beach Bar & Grill provides a more casual dining environment, but there is nothing casual about the flavours. For fine dining in the evening, Arii Moana will not disappoint with the French inspired menu. Inside tip – try the unbelievable crayfish dish. With numerous activities on offer and the large poolside and beach areas, Four Seasons not only caters to couples wanting to honeymoon or celebrate an important anniversary in paradise. It also is the perfect place for family groups and groups of friends who want to celebrate in a more spectacular holiday destination. Because the resort is so organised, groups can enjoy the perfect mix of together-time and privacy. Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora offers everything. The beautifully presented rooms, the staff, the location and the potential for adventure means guests can fulfil every desire of their special holiday.

Whisk yourself away to the Yasawa Islands in 30 minutes! When paradise can’t wait and you need to transfer to your island resort in the quickest possible time, Pacific Island Air have all your flight transfer options covered. With helicopter, seaplane and airplane transfers to all resorts and islands, Pacific Island Air are the only domestic airline in Fiji to offer all three modes of transport. Flights depart direct from the domestic terminal, Nadi Airport (including the seaplanes as they are amphibious) which is just a two-minute walk from the international terminal, offering a seamless hassle free way to get to your island destination. Apart from the convenience and time saving, flights to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands offer spectacular scenery. Everyone gets a window seat, guaranteed! The seaplane seats up to 10 passengers and because the flight operates at reasonably low levels, you will be able to experience all the majestic sights of the crystal clear sparkling Pacific Ocean and reefs along the way. Your friendly (barefoot) pilot will point out all the islands and resorts along the way, making this trip an exciting adventure and an opportunity to capture those magical photos to brag about on your return home! Pacific Island Air operate at the highest levels of safety, the company is owned by GCH Aviation, a New Zealand based company with over 35 years’ experience in the aviation industry and the only company in New Zealand to be awarded a Diamond Safety Certificate. The company also offers many scenic flight and day trip options from Nadi and Port Denarau. The most popular day trip being to the Yasawa’s including a visit to the Sawa-i-Lau Caves. Guests will be picked up from their mainland resort to the airport. From here you will fly to Nanuya Island Resort, hop onto the resorts waiting boat and taken to the Caves – about a 30-minute boat ride away. These scenic ancient limestone caves are located on Sawa-i-Lau Island in the Yasawa island group, the home of the famous Blue Lagoon. An adventure in their own right, the caves have been carved from continuous wave action and are known as the resting place of the ancient Fijian god Ulutini. They can be visited for a unique swimming experience. The first cavern is filled with natural light and a deep pool with a water temperature only a few degrees cooler than that of the Pacific Ocean water outside. Take a dip in the cave’s clear waters to see otherworldly limestone formations. The second cave, depending on the tide, can only be accessed by swimming through an underground tunnel. The caves are known to Fijians as the 'heart of the Yasawa' for their beauty and significance. After snorkelling the area, head back for hearty lunch and time to relax before the seaplane arrives to take you back to the mainland. Bliss!

VOMO welcomes new GM and farewells the Leslie family In April VOMO will welcome Justin King as its new General Manager. Justin is no stranger to Fiji, previously managing an island resort in the Yasawa region. His experience in luxury resorts includes managing the Australian icon, Saffire Freycinet Lodge in Tasmania as well as senior roles held in London, Doha and Sydney. After making the island their home for six years, current GM Mark Leslie, his wife Renee and their son Lochie will bid farewell to the island in March. Mark’s achievements include the complete refurbishment of the villas in 2015, the opening of the five star PADI Dive centre and Kui Spa and a significant rebuild after Cyclone Winston. Mark’s successful time at VOMO will conclude with him turning on the water in the soon to be opened, adults-only Rocks pool.

Top chef returns to VOMO Fresh seasonal produce, seafood and local Fijian flavours will once again be showcased by top New Zealand based chef Nic Watt at VOMO in May. The five days of ‘tastes’ will feature a selection of fourcourse menus, cocktails and canapes, and MASU Japanese Robata style taste plates. This is the second year Nic has returned to VOMO to host the event. Their mission is to select the best possible fresh ingredients before heading to VOMO to get cooking! “What better place to begin preparing locally inspired dishes than right at the source. The availability of Fijian local produce is increasing all the time and it’s great to see so many fresh ingredients being locally grown,” Nic said. The retreat plans to upgrade their larger shared spaces to meet this demand, while promising to keep the relaxed essence of the resort. “Crusoe’s is known for its down to earth demeanour – and we’re conscious not to lose that – but we felt it was time to revitalise our physical space to ensure the guest experience is easy and relaxing from start to finish, whether the end goal is business, pleasure or both,” says Karen. Tokoriki Island Resort is officially five-star Adults-only haven, Tokoriki Island Resort, has long been considered a premium Fiji resort option. And for good reason. The secluded beach setting is breathtaking, the accommodation options and food is first-class, and the staff are both professional and a joy to be around. But up until now, one thing eluded the resort.

Shangri-La's creates adult’s only haven

A five-star rating! But that changed when TripAdvisor recently rewarded Tokoriki Island Resort with the number one Top Hotel in Fiji rating for the fifth consecutive year, plus the number one Hotel for Service & Romance rating, and the icing on the cake – the opportunity to elevate their star rating. Well done Tokoriki Island Resort, you deserve it.

Coral Coast property, Shangri-La's Fijian Resort and Spa has undergone a multi-million dollar renovation, and one of the standout additions is the new adults-only Reef Wing. The brief was simple – provide grownups with a relaxed, secluded space – far from the buzz of family visitors. And that’s just what happened. Adults enjoy private pool access, daily complimentary cocktails and canapés and exclusive dining at the Reef Bar and Dining. On top of that, seven one-bed and four two-bed bures offer private villa accommodation with exclusive access to the beach and views across the reef and lagoon. Vintage Rugby is coming to rugby mad Fiji! World Vintage Rugby Carnival – November 10-17, 2019 If you’ve ever been to Fiji, you’ll know how much Fijians love their rugby. Drive through villages and you’ll see kids and adults running around with ball in hand. Or glued to the nearest TV whenever the national team is playing! Rugby is like a religion here, so what better place to hold an international over 35 years rugby event.

The rugby world is coming This November, 30 teams from New Zealand, Australia, United States, Canada and Fiji will descend on Denarau for the World Vintage Rugby Carnival. The only qualifying criteria is that players need to be over 35 years of age. (And be ready to have as much fun off the field as on it).

Anyone can play The emphasis of the carnival is on enjoyment and allowing teams to ‘compete’ at the level they wish to play. To make sure everyone can walk off the field in one piece - some of the rugby laws have been modified to promote a safe game. We have already have an 86 year old joining us, so anyone can play!

Individual players can register too Sometimes getting a full team together isn’t always easy. If an individual player would like to join in the fun, they can easily be matched to another fun-loving team.

Two big social functions Meeting up with old mates and making new ones is all part of the World Vintage Rugby experience. Outside the post-match banter and beers, there are two big social functions where everyone can let their hair down.

The 7-day event package includes: • Seven-nights Denarau accommodation (The Westin or The Palms) • Opening Ceremony and Welcome Party • Three match days – Churchill Park, Lautoka • Match day transfers • Two free days to relax, explore or tour • Finale Awards Dinner and Dance

Do you have rugby-loving clients? If you have clients that would love to be part of the World Vintage Rugby Carnival, simply get in touch with Ellie Bigsby at ellie@govsl.com or find out more at www.vintagerugbyfiji.com

As in 2018, buyers will be given the opportunity to stay after the event to participate in a series of “Beyond Honiara” educational tours visiting Gizo and Munda in the Western Province, plus Marau Sound and Malaita. Tourism Solomons has extended an open invitation to its regional neighbours to join in as exhibitors. So far there has been a very positive response with delegates from Fiji, the Federated States of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Kiribati and Nauru all expressing interest in the event.

American Samoa

Island Snaphot: Ofu The island of Ofu, located in our Manu’a Island group is renowned for its beautiful natural landscapes, pristine waters, colourful coral, vibrant marine life and memorable hiking trails. So it’s no surprise the destination draws in nature lovers from around the world. Especially those keen to (truly) get off the beaten track. Some describe Ofu as “America’s best kept secret”, and when you arrive, it’s not hard to see why this bold statement is so accurate. Lodging accommodations are an easy choice with Vaoto Lodge or Horizon Inn. Both are family owned and operated hotels with easy access to the beach!

Samoa Airways make Manu’a adventures easier American Samoa’s main island of Tutuila is a spectacular island in its own right. But outer island adventures to islands such as Ofu, should also be part of every visitor’s itinerary. And this excursion has just made easier with Samoa Airways recently adding an extra flight. The airline now offers four flights to Ta’u and two flights to Ofu weekly. This is particularly good news for those looking to explore Ofu’s National Park and the other Manu’a islands.

American Samoa tells its stories in the USA

A place of marine sanctuary With such unspoiled waters, it’s no surprise that on American Samoa’s most popular attractions is the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa - one of 14 federally designated underwater areas protected by NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. Of all the areas in the National Marine Sanctuary System, the American Samoa sanctuary is the most remote, and supports the greatest diversity of marine life. The sanctuary is made up of six protected areas, covering 13,581 square miles of near-shore coral reef and offshore open-ocean waters across the island group. Of these, three areas located on and near Tutuila are relatively accessible; Fagatele Bay and Fagalua/Fogama'a are along the southwest coast of the island, and Aunu'u Island is just southeast of Pago Pago Harbour. The other areas are remote and accessible only by boat.

In the middle of February the American Samoa Visitors Bureau joined forces with Samoa Tourism to promote ‘Two Samoas’ to an international audience at the Los Angeles Travel Adventure Show! The major two-day event was followed the next weekend with the Denver Travel and Adventure Show in Denver, Colorado – where the Samoans were welcomed by a fall of snow!

New Caledonia

New Caledonia promotes a new pulse If you thought New Caledonia was simply a beach destination – think again! New Caledonia Tourism has just launched a new microsite showcasing the vast array of adventure, cultural and foodie experiences on offer. Now live at pulse.newcaledonia.travel – the site cleverly recommends activities based on level of intensity: the ‘Zen’ collection includes swimming in a natural pool in the Isle of Pines, while the ‘Thrills’ collection features skydiving over the UNESCO World Heritage listed lagoon and ziplining through the lush forests near capital city Nouméa. The microsite fits in with New Caledonia’s wider 2019 campaign, Feel The Pulse of New Cal, which includes a variety of marketing activities including radio, digital and outdoor advertising. Plus the campaign ties in with a full calendar of events such as the XTERRA Run (25 May), New Caledonia Marathon (25 August), Blackwoodstock Rock and Art Festival (4 Oct) and the Underground Gourmet (late 2019).

Cheese on the menu in Noumea New Caledonia is renowned for its French fare, and during June, visitors will be in for an extra special treat. Back by popular demand, Le Méridien Nouméa (June 4-15) and Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Spa & Golf Resort (June 20-22) will be hosting the 2019 edition of the 'French Cheese Festival'. Mr Gérard Poulard, “Maître fromagier” (Cheese master) will also be attendance at the event. For over 20 years, Gérard Poulard has travelled throughout the French countryside discovering the history and culture of cheeses. He will offer attendees the unique opportunity to savour various cheeses such as 'Le brin d’amour', an ewe’s-milk cheese, 'L’extase Deauvillais', a cow’s milk cheese from Normandy, 'Le Chèvre Coeur', 'Les têtons de Simone', a goat’s milk cheese made by a farmer called Simone, and many others. Sounds amazing!

Women pros tee off at Sheraton Deva Mid March saw the running of the Sheraton Deva Women’s International Pro-Am Golf Tournament at the beautiful Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Spa & Golf Resort in Bourail (two hours drive north of Noumea). Played over three days, the event was open to both amateur and professional players. It attracted a field of almost 90 women from a list of countries including Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Canada, Japan, Sweden and a local contingent too. The resort is home to the Gold Deva Course which was customdesigned by Dye Custom Designs – a company founded by legendary American gold course architect Pete Dye.

Cook Islands

Little Polynesian – a sister act Originally named the Little Polynesian Motel, the humble beachfront property was acquired in 1985 by Cook Islands sisters - the late Te Tika Mataiapo Dorice Reid and the late Jeannine Peyroux. The pair foresaw the trend for upscale accommodation in the Cook Islands and were determined to evolve their little piece of paradise. The property went through a complete redevelopment in 2006 establishing the now 4.5 star boutique adults-only Little Polynesian Resort. Passionate about their homeland, Te Tika (a traditional chief) and Jeannine envisioned Little Polynesian Resort with a Cook Islands signature of its own. Today, guests can enjoy the relaxed luxury of a resort rich in history and inspired by Cook Islands values – all because of the vision of two forward-thinking sisters.

New pool for Moana Sands Villas Even when you’re sitting right next to a beautiful beach, it’s still nice to have the option of a swimming pool. And with this in mind, the team at Moana Sands Beachfront Villas put the plans in place. The property’s new pool and surrounding decking is very close to completion (as we go to press) and will be ready in plenty of time for the busy winter season ahead.

Modern style. Maximum space. Welcome to Pacific Palms Luxury Villa Rarotonga There are some fine accommodation options spread across the beautiful island of Rarotonga. Redesigned pool at Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa The team at Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa is pleased to announce the completion of its main pool renovations. The central oasis at the five-star property is nestled between the lush green mountains and the crystal blue lagoon, and is the perfect place to relax with a good book, while sipping a fresh coconut in between refreshing dips. Then after working up an appetite during your swim, visit the poolside Rotui Grill & Bar with lunch options served from 11am daily.

Saving the world one coral at a time Marine biologists call coral reefs ‘the lungs of our oceans’. They go a step further by explaining that half the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean – so if we have no reef, we have no ocean and eventually, we have no air. At current rates, it is estimated that the world’s coral reefs could all be dead by 2050. With that grim thought in mind, Tahiti based organisation Coral Gardeners have set out to educate people about the importance of coral. And, they are physically restoring coral by planting it back on the reef. To help fund the project, people can donate by ‘adopting and naming’ their very own piece of coral, which includes an adoption certificate with GPS coordinates of the piece! To support this great cause, please go to www.coralgardeners.org.

More additions at Manava Suites It’s all happening at Manava Suite Resort Tahiti! The end of 2018 saw the opening of the new Taapuna Restaurant, and major work completed to the resorts shorefront – including the enhancement of the lagoon and new motu. This stunning setting has now been complemented by a range of new water activities. Guests can take their pick of riding jet skis, paddling glass kayaks and paddleboards, and whale watching during the season. On top of all that the resort has added a water taxi service that goes back and forth to Papeete. Congratulations, Manava - we have no doubt your guests will appreciate your hard work.

Niue

Kaloama come in close

©David Kirkland

Niue had a fantastic Kaloama season recently, with the small fish seen jumping out of the water and plentiful on Niuean shores. Kaloama fishing is a tradition and sport, as well as a way of feeding the family, as the locals catch the tiny sardine-like fish individually. The fish are treasured in Niue and only visit once a year. This means during the generally short season of one to two weeks, some swimming spots around the island are closed, to allow for the safe spawning of the kaloama. Visitors lucky enough to visit when the fish arrive, get to watch the many locals catching them and witness an authentic Niuean tradition.

A new place to eat – Fusion Flava Food Truck – opened recently, serving delicious food, including noodle boxes and tortillas. With other great eateries including Japanese and Indian cuisine, pizza, burgers, salads and the must-have fish n’ chips, there’s no shortage of places to eat in Niue, with something for everyone.

Experience Niuean arts and culture The Niue Arts and Culture Festival is on again! This year’s event will be held April 19–25 2019. Although held for Niueans, the festival is a great experience for visitors also, allowing them a unique insight into many facets of the Niuean culture. Visit www.niueisland.com/ events for more details.

Bye bye bags Last year Sustainable Niue was launched, starting with the announcement of a ban on single-use plastic bags, to be phased out during 2019. Since then, Niue’s only supermarket – Swanson Supermarket – has announced it will be switching from biodegradable bags to plant based (compostable) bags, at a small cost, to encourage the use of reusable bags or kato tapola (woven coconut baskets).

Niue hits the (fishing) spot Keen anglers take note! Yellowfin tuna are plentiful in Niue’s waters at the moment, feeding on the many baitfish that have been around. Other species of fish caught in Niue include black, blue and striped marlin; skipjack tuna; red bass, mahimahi, sailfish, wahoo and giant trevally. With deep blue waters, only meters offshore anglers can spend less time travelling to a fishing spot and more time doing what they love best – fishing!

Volcano house hotel reopens The volcanic movements of 2018 were some of the most active in living memory, but with nature now ‘settled down’, many operations are back to business. This includes the iconic Volcano house hotel, which is located on the edge of Kilauea volcano's summit caldera, right inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The hotel recently reopened to guest stays, but while the seismic activity has altered the landscape - the Halema'uma'u crater has tripled in depth and doubled in diameter – the hotel still offers some of the best vantage points in the park.

The two-week festival will finish with its annual community hoolaulea (celebration), set for May 5 at the Pahala Community Center, featuring live entertainment, hula performances, farm tours and coffee-infused arts, crafts and eats! If you’re in the neighbourhood, make sure you put some time aside. Visit www.kaucoffeefestival.com.

Fairmont Orchid resort's award-winning Spa Without Walls recently announced two sweet-themed treatments created for the spring season. The 'Sweet Relaxation Honey Massage' and 'Sweet Honey Mask Facial' using locally-sourced honey from the resort's four on-site flow hives - home to more than 80,000 honey bees. The treatments are high in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and rich in conditioning. Spa guests can select an oceanfront or waterfall hale (building) for their treatment, both accompanied by the relaxing sound of water. Sounds delightful!

Hawaii Marriott

Resort’s relaxed beach vibe inspired by local legends Stroll along Kuhio Beach on the arc of sand that is Waikiki, and you’re bound to come across the Waikiki Beach Boys. They are renowned for their casual, bohemian attitude as they arrange surf lessons and canoe rides, and hire out surfboards.

Their glory days may be over, now they have had to adopt a corporate image of uniforms, name tags and iPads. It’s supposed to give their presence on the beach a more professional look. But their welcoming smiles, local colour and aloha were the inspiration for interior designer Bianca Yih, from design company CRA in her concept for transforming the guest rooms at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa. This second phase of the resort’s transformation will see all of the 1310 rooms renovated by autumn, 2019. The painted wooden shiplap panels and warm ceruse wood stain throughout the guestrooms’ millwork and furniture promote the casual feel of a welcoming Hawaiian home. All the guest bathrooms are being clad with tiles inspired by whitewashed driftwood planks, and flanked by barn door entries, with new vanities and lighting. Maritime works of art above the beds pay homage to Waikiki’s reef. Other subtle nods to the Beach Boys' lifestyle include coral-coloured accent pillows and rope-woven details to help create a sense of place and time. The bathrooms in the renovated King Rooms will have new walk-in showers encased in glass. Guests can swim in one of the resort’s freshwater swimming pools, then relax in the new 10-person outdoor whirlpool located on the third floor of the Paoakalani Tower. There is a new state-of-the-art 24-hour fitness centre, or guests can learn Hawaiian arts and crafts, browse the shops and boutiques, or relax and listen to live Hawaiian entertainment. The balconies or lanai, where guests can enjoy a drink and a snack and lap up the unforgettable view of the Pacific Ocean, have also been refreshed. The renovation of the guest rooms follows the first phase in the transformation of the Waikiki Beach Marriott, which began in 2016 with the completion of the Kona Moku Ballroom, the Nanea Lobby and the Kuhio Beach Grill. The focal point of the Kona Moku Ballroom is a stunning blown glass chandelier which beams out a kaleidoscope of colours. Customised lighting and a lanai overlooking the lobby's water feature help ensure meetings and events happen in a professional, relaxed atmosphere. The ballroom accommodates 800 guests in a theatre setup and 610 attendees for a banquet. The crowning touch of the Nanea Lobby transformation is a dramatic 18 x 6 metre carved wooden artwork, Ka Maka Hinu (The Bright Face), by artist Kaiwi Nui Yoon. The artwork is intended to reflect the love of Queen Liliuokalani, Hawaii's last reigning monarch, for the people of her kingdom. 48

The Kuhio Beach Grill, or KBG, takes pride in their bourbon bar, featuring craft cocktails and over 40 different whiskies, including some from Japan. The menu features locally inspired modern American cuisine. The Grill is open for breakfast and dinner, with a prime rib buffet being an evening highlight. A century ago, the land on which the resort stands was the Queen’s summer residence, complementing her main home. The resort honoured her by naming its two towers to represent her two homes Kealohilani and Paoakalani (for 'heavenly' and 'fragrance'). It perpetuates her legacy by providing guests with authentic Hawaiian music by some of the state’s best musicians, displaying Hawaiian artifacts throughout the hotel, and welcoming guests with traditional, gracious Hawaiian hospitality.

White Sands Hotel swings back to the 1960s Honolulu’s White Sands Hotel is undergoing a full restoration to its original 1960's glory, with a reopening planned for July 2019. As one of Waikiki’s only remaining walkup motels, White Sands will be a funky, fun return to the Hawaii of a classic era. A full revamp by Honolulu-based interior design house Vanguard Theory will put a twist on Hawaii’s mid-century nostalgia. Think lush garden and a pool courtyard oasis complete with a bar-adjacent hot tub that will be a magnet for fun-loving patrons!
