It's time to reconnect with the Cook Islands. Nobody could have predicted the changes that have taken place over the last few years. But as move into the second quarter of 2022, New Zealand is beginning to open back up the world - Kiwis from anywhere – whether citizens or permanent residents – can now return without having to go through MIQ. Once again, we have the chance to appreciate the beauty that we have on our South Pacific doorstep. In this special feature, we remind you what a special place the Cook Islands is. From family adventures on Rarotonga, to the romantic escapes on Aitutaki, we cover the best the Cook Islands has to offer. We hope you enjoy the read. And we hope it inspires you to make that booking! Cover Image by Island Love Photography, Alisha Street

Kia Orana Booked a flight to the Cooks? Whether it's your first time or you're a regular visitor let's take it back to the basics.

The Cook Islands group is made up of 15 islands scattered across a vast ocean area. But for most travellers - the focus is the main island of Rarotonga, and the equally spectacular smaller island of Aitutaki (50 min flight time away). All international flights to the Cook Islands land in Rarotonga and any couple in search of romance will be spoilt for choice. As will any family looking for a laidback tropical adventure. Rarotonga boasts some seriously stunning escapes. Beautiful beachfront resorts providing every possible convenience, boutique adultsonly luxury, self-contained apartment-style accommodation and private guesthouses are all great options and fit most budgets.

The coastal road that circles Rarotonga is only 32 kilometres long, so even with a 50 kilometre per hour speed limit, you’ll do the circuit in under an hour. Not that you’ll ever get around that quickly – there is too much to stop and see along the way! Dotted around the island are a variety of cafés, restaurants, bars and shops. When you feel the need, simply pull over and stop for a bite, beverage or browse. And if you feel like a dip, simply pick a beach – chances are you’ll have it to yourselves. By comparison, Aitutaki is less than half the size and a lot less populated - hence it's magnetic attraction to couples seeking solitude in a picture perfect paradise. It's crystal clear lagoon is what tropical dreams are made of.

Finding Family Fun If you're searching for a laid-back destination where there's plenty for the family to see and do, but you can see and do it at your own pace – no rushing, no stress, no worries - then you've come to the right place.

Image by Island Love Photography, Alisha Street

The first stop for all incoming flights is Rarotonga International Airport in Avarua, the island's main commercial centre. It's an excellent place to start your Cook Islands family adventure. Avarua is a laid back little town with more than enough shops, cafes and restaurants to keep the family busy. Plus you'll find interesting sights like the Para O Tane Palace and the National Museum. The kids (and adults) will be able to learn a thing or two about the events, artefacts and people that have helped shape the Cooks Islands. A lesson like this isn't compulsory. But having some understanding of local culture will only add to your holiday experience and make it more memorable.

Avarua's main market is also worth investigating and is another fun way for families to soak up local life. There are lots of food stalls - grab some fresh fruit and veges. Or maybe pick up a few handicrafts to take back home. If the kids' tummies are still rumbling, pop into the iconic Trader Jacks Bar and Grill on the waterfront. (They can jump off the nearby wharf while they're waiting for their food). When you've seen the sights of Avarua, explore the coastal road that circles the island. It's only 32k around, so you can get the whole way around in less than an hour. Of course, a trip that quick is unlikely - there are far too many fun things for a family to see and do.

In terms of transport, scooters are the most popular choice of traveller transport (note helmets are now required). But families can opt for a rental car. There are numerous rental car companies on the island. Otherwise, you can travel 'local' by jumping on the public buses that circle the island. Either way, you'll have the freedom to explore. If you're doing the circuit, you'll find a variety of locally run cafes, restaurants and bars. The standard of fare is excellent - as you'd expect 'caught-that-day seafood' is a speciality, but there are plenty of other ways to fill hungry tummies too.

As a general rule, the cost of eating out is similar to what you pay in New Zealand, so there's no reason to be concerned about over-the-top prices. If you're looking to stretch your legs (and take in some stunning views), Rarotonga also has some great hiking trails. The best known is the Cross Island Track which winds its way from the north coast down to the south via the 400m high peak called the Needle. The scenery is quite spectacular, and if you go on a guided trip, you'll get to learn fascinating facts about plant life, animals and the history of the island. The climb can be a challenge, so it is more suited to bigger kids.

After something like that, it will be time to head for Rarotonga's southern coastline - an area that is blessed with superb beaches and clear, tranquil waters. The bestknown is the stretch of fine white sands that run along Muri Lagoon. This beautiful location is fantastic for snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and kite surfing. Families can take one of the lagoon cruises to excellent snorkelling and swimming spots with brilliant coral and countless colourful fish. If you don't want to snorkel, you can swim next to the boat or sit and watch the fish. The cruises may include a stop at a tiny motu, or atoll island in the lagoon for a barbecue lunch, and there's plenty of time for the kids to explore or go in search of hermit crabs. Back on land, Muri Village has a good choice of cafés and restaurants, as well as the Muri Night Market. Held every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 5 pm, it's a great way for everyone to spend a few hours tasting local food from one of the stalls, enjoying some free entertainment and local dancing. In the middle of the resorts and hotels of Muri Beach is Te Vara Nui Village, the cultural centre of the Cook Islands. The kids will enjoy the guided tour as it includes information and demonstrations of Cook Islands' culture, including weaving, coconut husking, woodcarving, cooking, medicine, fishing and costume making. A big lunch and cultural show will conclude the visit.

Further along the southern coast, families will discover more fine beaches. The best snorkelling can be found at Aroa, Titikaveka and Tikioki. The calm waters of Titikaveka are especially good for children who may be wary of the ocean, as they can easily see schools of colourful fish while their feet are still on the sand. There is a snorkel rental shop at Titikaveka Beach. If your children are keen to try playing the ukulele, stop at Natua Ukelele at Aroa Beach. Natua will show you the timbers he uses, how to tune a ukulele, and maybe even play for you!

Also make sure you book a guide to look around the privately owned Takitumu Conservation Area, a community-based project. The guide will tell you how they are helping to save the very rare yellow kakerori, one of the world's rarest bird species, and help you spot them among the ferns, orchids, chestnuts and other native plants.

Couples Heaven The Cook Islands has long been a favourite for couples in search of romance. The warm tropical sunshine and spectacular natural scenery provide a backdrop that few islands can match. But beyond the jaw-dropping views and silky white sands is a genuine ‘local’ experience that couples can connect with.

In some Pacific destinations, the wedding experience, honeymoon or romantic getaway is centred around the resort or hotel a couple choose to stay in. In fact, sometimes a couple might never leave the property’s front gate. In the Cook Islands, things are a little different.

Or grabbing a scooter and taking your own tiki tour - pulling into secluded beaches, offbeat art galleries or anywhere else that catches the eye.

While there are magical resorts, hotels and boutique properties that are perfect for weddings, honeymoons and romantic escapes, the true charm of the Cook Islands is being able to get out and about and soak up local life.

For couples getting married, the “big day” will naturally be the highlight of any trip. And just like the Cook Islands vibe, there is no reason to stress.

Like strolling down to a village café and grabbing a bite to eat. Or pulling up a barstool and chewing the fat with a few characters at a buzzing local bar like Trader Jack’s.

Needless to say, couples will love exploring the islands together.

The island is home to expert event planners, wonderful venues, first-class food and beverage options and exceptional accommodation. Rest assured, a couple will find what they’re looking for.

Exploring Avarua is a must. If you’re travelling by car or scooter, simply find a park in the middle of town (there are plenty to choose from) and go for a wander – everything is within easy walking distance. There are enough shops for those wanting some retail therapy – look out for the famous black pearls from the smaller islands of Manihiki and Penrhyn. There are also plenty of cafés and restaurants to tempt the tastebuds. The coastal road that circles the island is also dotted with laid back eateries serving a variety of island cuisine. When you feel the need, simply pull over and stop for a bite, beverage or browse. Keep a lookout for Charlie’s Café, which is set up in an old shipping container and pop into The Moorings Café, which has a reputation for making the Cook Island’s finest sandwiches! And if you feel like a dip, you can stop at any number of beaches – chances are you could have it to yourselves.
