The world has been tipped upside down.

Niue...........................................................................4

Unprecedented. Damaging. Deadly. Surreal. The spread of COVID-19 has made an economic and social impact like nothing we have seen in our time. Like flicking a switch, global travel restrictions have stopped tourism in its tracks. Sadly, many businesses will suffer serious damage and people will lose their jobs. But while it’s hard to see positives at a time like this, one thing is for certain – this crisis will eventually pass.

Slowly but surely, people will have the freedom and confidence to travel again. As a small media company we will feel the pain of COVID-19 alongside our clients, suppliers and friends. Yet it won’t diminish our passion for the Pacific Islands and it will not stop us promoting this special part of the world when the industry begins to bounce back. (Hopefully sooner rather than later!) Like always, we hope you enjoy this issue. But more importantly, take care.

islandtime Autumn 2020

It’s always been a personal mantra of mine to live a life without regret. However, my first visit to Niue could well be my greatest challenge in the No Regrets Department as I find myself desperately wishing I’d come so much sooner so I could have made a habit of it! Still, as they say, it’s never too late. In my case, it’s not too late to make Niue my go-to Pacific island for years to come. I woke up early on our first morning in Niue and leaving my two children and their weary father slumbering I crept quietly out onto the clifftop terrace of our room at the Scenic Matavai Resort to soak up the stunning ocean views and breathe in a few lungfuls of fresh Pacific air. No sooner had I set foot outside I was rewarded with the most extraordinary sight; a massive pod of Spinner Dolphins right below, at least 20-strong, gently weaving in and out through the incoming swells below our room. Of course I FREAKED out and urgently whispered a hurried wake up call, but I needn’t have rushed. We all stood still transfixed for at least another 20 minutes, our marine visitors were certainly in no hurry to depart. We got very used to our dolphin neighbours as it turned out, they greeted us most mornings during our one week stay and we never EVER tired of watching them. This first visit to Niue for us was nearing the end of the peak holiday season, the Southern Hemisphere winter. Most of the accommodation on the island and certainly the Scenic Matavai were fully booked but you would never know the island was at capacity. The different walks and swimming spots were never busy and in some cases, we had the place to ourselves. We got very used to bumping into the same people, visitors and explorers like us, and I loved how we would always stop and natter, sharing our latest discoveries, delights, and tips!

Disconnect/Reconnect. Disconnect. Never had I needed a break from the world more than I did for this trip. There is no global roaming and the WIFI is patchy at best. For me and for my device-addicted kids (7 and 11 years) switching off was BRILLIANT and we never gave it another thought. You can buy a SIM card where you arrive if being connected is a priority and for $70 for three days you can connect to the Matavai’s very slow WIFI. This is all about to change as the massive Manatua Cable from Hawaii is snaking its way across the Pacific servicing Niue along with Samoa, Cook Islands and Tahiti, and this will drastically alter their connectivity. Reconnect. Spending quality downtime with the special people in our lives is always an imperative, We’ve been blessed with several delicious resort holidays as a family and the holiday vibes have always given us the break we’ve needed. But for us, as a family. Niue was a revelation. The fact my partner and our children are part-Niuean is of course an added layer, and this was the first visit for all of them so incredibly meaningful. But that connection aside, the Island offered us all so much more than the usual resort experience. While we loved the Matavai and had plenty of pool and chill time there, we spent every day out exploring and left with plenty of exploring still to be done. Autumn 2020

islandtime 5

Tip Top Tips. Niue is very family friendly If you’re wondering whether Niue is a great place to bring the kids the answer is HECK YES, but I reckon for maximum enjoyment bring your darlings when they’re school age and pretty confident on their feet and in the water. There are short fun walks to the best swimming places and you can time your visits with the tides depending on how deep you’d like it. If they’ve never snorkelled before (like my kids) then there are a plethora of perfect places for them to get their confidence up without ever being out of their depth. If you’re worried about terrifying sea creatures gobbling up your precious offspring fear not. Amidst the teeming brightly coloured coral fish the only mildly diverting pooldwellers are the slim yellow and black sea snakes and while they are indeed poisonous they are also VERY shy with teeth too small to penetrate the skin and we only saw them very much from a distance.

Pack reef shoes We got very solid cheap and cheerful reef shoes from The Warehouse before we left New Zealand and they were ideal - we wore them everywhere we swam and it made everything so accessible and easy. No drama if you forget though there were plenty of spare pairs at the Matavai to borrow. They also have snorkels, masks and fins in great condition which we used during our stay.

Hit the road Self-drive is the only way to make the most of the island. We picked up a roomy reliable rental right at the airport from Niue Rentals and it was perfect. Everything is so close, it was a five-minute drive from the airport down to the Scenic Matavai and short trips to all the best swimming and eating spots. Make a family game of dodging the biggest potholes! The roads do require some work, but as my son said after the first few days - hey mum, I just realised there are no traffic lights!

Snorkelling with Niue Dive. Anthony and Tom from Niue Dive right next door to the Scenic Matavai Resort are top-notch. We booked an afternoon snorkelling trip and as far as the kids were concerned the adventure began right from the get-go as we piled onto the back of the ute for the short drive to the boat ramp. Avetele Beach is only a couple of minutes up the road and has a well-kitted out ramp complete with a sturdy crane to lower the dive RIB into the sea. It took only a few minutes and we were off through the narrow reef channel out into the open sea. Anthony took us for a stooge right across the bay full of insider's knowledge about both land and sea and especially where the best snorkel and dive spots are for beginners and pros alike. He told me he’s worked as a dive instructor all over the world and Niue is hands down the best place he’s dived. My 11-year-old had never properly snorkelled before and with Anthony at her side, she tipped over the edge of the RIB and into 40 meters of clear deep ocean water without batting an eyelid. We saw a tonne of big and small reef fish, lots of sea snakes and the highlight - a full-grown and very inquisitive turtle! Our mission to find our Spinner Dolphin friends was a fail this trip but we will make it our life’s quest to swim with them next trip. Niue is well known as a spectacular place to whale-watch and we will most certainly be planning our next trip between June and late September next year when the humpback whale settles into the warmer environs off Niue to breed. There are specialist licensed operators who treat visitors to closequarter encounters with these magnificent sea creatures and I cannot wait for that opportunity. But honestly? Even outside of whale-watching season and with an entire week to explore the small island, we still didn’t get to see and soak up everything on our list.

Take a tour I would seriously recommend taking a guided tour of the island on your first day. I’m not usually a tour kinda gal - finding my own way around places has always been my Modus Operandi - but two hours with Explore Niue owner Vanessa Marsh was SUCH a gift. Vanessa has lived on the Rock all her life and knows the place inside out. She showed us the best places to swim and snorkel - Limu Pools, Matapa Chasm and our local beaches Avatele and Tamakautogo were our favourites. She had great eating recommendations and knew so much about the landscape, the history of the island and almost every single plant, insect and sea creature we came across. We set up our entire week based on her suggestions and couldn’t recommend her more highly.

Bring your appetite When it comes to eating out for dinner my advice is hatch a plan for your entire stay when you arrive - and the lovely folk at the Matavai will happily book them for you. I also suggest eating earlier than later to ensure you get the best of the menu! It wasn’t uncommon for the best freshest seafood to get snapped up and trust me you do NOT want to miss out. The sashimi and fish burgers were without doubt the best we’ve ever had.

Top 5 Best Eats. • Kaiika (quite simply and by far and away the best and freshest tuna sashimi I’ve ever had) • Falala Fa’s (local YUMMY Niuean fare) • Washaway Cafe (only open Sundays and do NOT miss this - best burgers on the island and the best place to eat, drink and watch the sun go down) • Vaiolama Cafe (play a round of mini-golf and sip on their EXCELLENT iced chocolates or their local specialty a rockmelon crush while you do. Happy Hour Thursdays from 3pm) • The Scenic Matavai’s Niuean Umu (like a Hangi) and spit roast pig feast on a Thursday night is a MUST

Top 5 Best Swims. • Limu Pools (just as spectacular at low medium and high tides - venture to the right for another amazing pool complete with a cave to swim through) • Matapa Chasm (mix of freshwater and salt and fabulous swimming at any tide deeper swimming) • Tamakautogo is a short 10-15 minute flat easy walk from the Scenic Matavai, the beach is a gentle sandy cove and superb for younger less confident swimmers (you will still need your reef shoes for maximum access and fun) • Off the Niue Dive boat out in the bay • Swimming at high tide inside one of the main Avaiki Caves was for me almost a spiritual experience. We had the entire place to ourselves, the water was an astonishing shade of crystal clear deep blue and turquoise and I’ve never seen or swum in anything like it.

The Scenic Matavai Resort

The Scenic Matavai Resort. We had 7 wonderful nights at the Scenic Matavai Resort and the moment we walked into the place it felt like home. Greeted warmly by the resort managers Matt and Missy, handed fresh coconuts to drink from and ushered through to the deck; this would be our first experience of this truly extraordinary view out across the bay, a view we would never get sick of. We had two spacious adjoining clifftop rooms each with their own private balcony looking out through the palm trees to the sea below. The kids had their own single beds, our room with the large super king, and each had simple stylish bathrooms with strong hot showers and lovely wicker chair settings indoors and out. We had a TV in both but we never bothered to turn them on! The small fridge we certainly made use of though, stocking it up with water and snacks for the kids. The resort offers air conditioning in all the rooms and in the hot peak summer months there's no doubt that would be a godsend. For us though, the large ceiling fans above the beds were just perfect (it was warm at night, never below 20, and up to 28 during the day) and we never used our air con at all.

We were just a short meander to the main building where the Dolphin Restaurant and Bar and the main reception were, then the short drop down the stairs to the two lovely pools and pool bar. We set up shop at the pool before we'd even unpacked and didn't budge until dinner time. The kids were growing gills by the time we finally hauled them out of the water, and in the meantime we'd entirely settled into island time, reading our books and poring over our itinerary hatching plans for the week. The resort was the perfect base for all our exploring and a haven to come home to. The yummy buffet-style breakfast would set us up for the day, the staff were always so genuine and so incredibly knowledgeable and helpful and nothing was ever a problem. One great option to consider too, especially if self-catering is your preference, check out the self-contained studio apartments and the three-bedroom villa located just 1.5km north of the main resort. The apartments can interconnect which makes them perfect for families and groups, and the laid-back complex includes its own pool and shared BBQ. You also have full access to all the main resort facilities and there's even a free shuttle for guests. Autumn 2020

When your plane lands in Denarau, Fiji and you step into the warm, tropical air it's tempting to look no further than the array of quality resorts on the mainland. But for those willing to go further afield, there are some breathtaking, easily accessible alternatives. One of those is the stunning five-star Sheraton Resort and Spa, Tokoriki Island. Located in the Mamanuca Island Group, it provides an opportunity for the perfect island getaway. The island can be accessed with a scenic, 60-minute South Sea Cruises ferry ride from Port Denarau. You can also reach the resort by an Island Hoppers helicopter, which offers the fastest way to and from Sheraton Resort & Spa Tokoriki, and provides the thrill of flying over the sparkling reef.

They also offer a range of boat cruises to explore the surrounding reef and islands. Choose from a four hour snorkelling trip or immerse the kids in local culture with a visit to Yanuya Village, renowned for its pottery making and home to many of the Sheraton Tokoriki staff.

Whatever way you choose to get there you won’t be disappointed by the striking natural beauty that greets you on arrival at Tokoriki Island. When you step on to the island you’ll be met first with white sand beaches, crystal blue water and the feeling of being away from it all in the remote beauty of the Mamanucas. Then you’ll be introduced to the comfort of your well-appointed room with the luxury of five-star facilities.

The whole family will enjoy a day trip to Monuriki Islands. With steep craggy rock faces and thick forests, the island is a wild sight-to-be-seen. The beaches are well worth a visit with their fine white sand, dwarfed by the shade of tall palm trees. Be sure to tell the kids they are on the island where the 2000 film Castaway was filmed.

The Sheraton Tokoriki’s range of rooms offer unique features - but what they all have in common is contemporary comfort in lush natural surroundings. Think plush bedding, walk-in rainforest showers, furnished patios and picturesque views. And while you might want to disconnect to enjoy this piece of paradise, the resort also offers complimentary Wi-Fi and a 40-inch LCD TVs in each room for those who need to stay linked in. Guests can choose from Ocean View or Ocean Front Rooms with king-size beds or take it up a notch with a larger Retreat Room, which offers the luxury of a private plunge pool and deck. Or if you are having a family adventure, you’ll love the roominess of a spacious Family Two Bedroom Suite.

If romance is in the air – Sheraton Tokoriki offers an abundance of choice for your special day with three lovely indoor and outdoor venues on offer. If an outdoor wedding suits your taste, hold your ceremony on the private beach, or experience the Fijian charm at The Coco Palms exotic outdoor location. Or, treat your guests to a Fiji sunset with a beachside reception at Waitui House. For those having a cosy ceremony, the intimate chapel with an ocean view is a romantic choice, or if you have a large group in tow, The Turtle Ballroom has capacity for up to 120 guests. With an experienced staff ready to help you with your wedding plans, the only stress will be choosing between such a great line-up of venues.

Relax with pampering treatments at the day spa. The Tokoriki Spa has both men’s and women’s lounges, and a range of treatments on offer that will help you look and feel your best while on holiday. Choose from body wraps, couples massages, facials, manicures and pedicures, waxing and men’s treatments.

After soaking up the sun and sea, you’ll be ready for a delicious meal. The Sheraton Resort & Spa Tokoriki offers spectacular dining options for all tastes, from a traditional "lovo" style barbecue at Tokoriki Coco Palms, to fresh seafood and international cuisine paired with diverse wines at Waitui House Restaurant. Or for a more relaxed meal of salads, pizzas and Fijian style curries, unwind in the ocean breeze at The Reef Grill and take in the views of the Mamanuca islands while planning your next day of adventure or relaxation.

There’s a range of family-friendly activities at the resort, from a private mini-golf course, to a beachside infinity pool. Or if adventure is on the agenda, this should include an exploration of Tokoriki Coral reef. Denarau Surf Dive and Ski provide a range of ways to explore the surrounding water wonderland, with jet skis, scuba diving, stand up paddleboards and paragliding available.

It will be difficult to leave Sheraton Tokoriki, but you’ll go home relaxed, rested and full of great memories from this island paradise. For those wanting to ease themselves slowly out of their Fiji bliss, and enjoy a leisurely transfer home, pre and post accommodation can be arranged at the resort’s sister properties - Sheraton Fiji Resort or The Westin in Denarau. This might just be the perfect spot to plan your next visit. Autumn 2020

Niue

Niue – close to home in many ways Niue is just a 3½ hour flight away and only accessible by Air New Zealand flights from Auckland twice a week. With the time zone being basically the same as New Zealand, English being the main language spoken and the NZ dollar being legal tender in Niue it makes it all super easy to travel there.

The mission to phase out plastic straws Niue Tourism is pleased to announce the launch of Niue Pocket Guide, a comprehensive guide detailing what travellers can experience on the island. Over 300 articles are featured on the free online guide at www.niuepocketguide.com. To celebrate the launch of the guide Niue Tourism and the Niue Pocket Guide team have made a commitment to start the process to eliminate plastic straws from the island by providing every hotel, bar, restaurant and café in Niue with reusable metal straws.

It’s official, Niue is the world’s first Dark Sky country Different locations around the world have become a Dark Sky Place, but Niue has proudly become the first whole country to become a Dark Sky Place. It has received formal accreditation from the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary and International Dark Sky Community, thus covering the whole country with Dark Sky protection and recognition and deeming it a ‘dark sky nation’! The stars and night sky have a huge significance to the Niuean way of life, from a cultural, environmental and health perspective. Niueans have a long history of star navigation and a life regulated by lunar cycles and star positions. The knowledge of the night skies has been passed down through the generations. Niuean elders now hope the passion to learn the cultural history of the stars is re-ignited in younger generations and visitors alike. Visitors can view the spectacle of an unspoilt night sky in Niue’s temperate tropical climate. They’ll also be able to enjoy guided Astro-tours led by trained Niuean community members, where they will witness the wonder of a night sky illuminated by thousands of stars. The Milky Way with the large and small Magellanic Clouds and the Andromeda constellation are truly a sight to behold. Our advice – pack your binoculars!

Club Raro’s Culinary Champion keeps it authentic One of the highlights of any overseas trip is being able to sample local cuisine. The Cook Islands Tourism Corporation is taking this a step further with their ‘Takurua’ initiative. ‘Takarua’ aims to develop and document the authentic cuisine and practices of the Cook Islands. Promoting healthy eating and sustainable food production, and in doing so, encouraging locals and visitors to share the exquisite taste that is Cook Islands cuisine. A local exponent of this movement is Culinary Champion of the Year 2020, Tua Tariau. 24-yearold Tua is Executive Chef at Club Raro Resort and he is supremely passionate and well-versed in the art of creating authentic Cook Island cuisine – in fact, he learnt to cook alongside his mother! While Club Raro is not about high-end food experiences, Tua’s menu is renowned for packing a punch and he underpins his culinary creations with real-life stories. Make sure you book a table!

Studio makeover at Palm Grove Set in Vaimaanga on the stunning south coast of Rarotonga, the small and friendly Palm Grove Resort offers 22 self-contained bungalows – 13 set in the hibiscus filled gardens, and nine on the secluded beachfront. Needless to say, it’s a great place to relax! The boutique property is also in the process of completing an external makeover of their lead-in Garden Studio bungalows. These bungalows are having thatch roofing installed. Plus local wood carving artwork is being added to the exterior. Not only will this project enhance the natural beauty of the resort’s surroundings, but it will also add to the authentic Cook Islands theme.

Space and convenience a coconut throw from Avarua! For families or groups looking for more space than a standard hotel room, Tuoro Holiday Villas are a top option. Part of Cook Islands Holiday Villas inventory, there are four Tuoro Holiday Villas to choose from. Each villa can be secured individually, or larger groups can book two, three or all four! (Perfect for wedding groups or large family celebrations). Each of the villas comes with four large airy bedrooms, plus the king-sized beds can be split into singles if need be. The list of amenities is impressive too. A modern, fully equipped kitchen, dining setting for eight people, two bathrooms, all linen and towels provided, free laundry facilities … and the list goes on! The location is walking distance to the local shops, so you can pick up fresh bread, milk and other supplies each morning. And the main town of Avarua is as an easy five-minute drive away (or bus ride), so enjoying the numerous bars, restaurants, shops and markets is a breeze.

Tavenuni – a place to get away for it all Taveuni is one of those places in Fiji that flies under the radar. Yes, it’s a little off the beaten track and requires a connecting 90-minute flight from Nadi. But as any visitor will tell you, taking a few more hours is a small price to pay for reaching paradise. The island's 44,500 hectares are blanketed in lush, virgin rainforest that is bursting with flora and fauna. For eco-lovers, Taveuni is a dream come true. Meanwhile the waters off Taveuni are considered worldclass marine environments. Thanks to the Tongan trench, nutrients flow into these waters, creating an extremely rich underwater eco-system that is renowned for its colourful soft coral and a multitude of tropical fish.

American Samoa

Le Faleo’o keeps the culture alive Le Faleo’o Samoan Cultural Centre is American Samoa’s newest attraction and only living museum. A generation ago the thought of traditional skills becoming extinct would be unimaginable. Yet today, the number of traditional artists has dramatically decreased and continues to do so. The mission of Le Faleo’o is to restore and maintain the indigenous cultural skills of American Samoa - by bringing together ancient practices and modern economic methods. For example, the centre will support indigenous artists by providing a work space, a revitalisation of necessary plant population and greater exposure for their art through tourism and ecommerce. For visitors, the Centre offers authentic Samoan cultural experiences in a village setting. Featuring over a dozen interactive, hands-on activities and demonstrations that include the most beloved aspects of the Samoan culture such as the i’e toga, the siapo, ava tasting and the umu. Le Faleo’o welcomes off-island visitors, local residents, school field trip groups and all others that want to discover and explore the many layers of the Samoan culture.

Welcome to Hiking Heaven If there’s an absolute must-do activity in the National Park, it’s hiking. On Tutuila, visitors can choose from ten different trails. For an easy walk try the short and flat Pola Island Trail, which leads you to a rocky beach with stunning coastal views. For a moderate walk that mixes ancient archaeological sites and spectacular views of the northeast coastline, take the Lower Sauma Ridge Trail. If you’re up for more of a challenge, take the nine kilometre Mount Alava Adventure Trail. You’ll head along ridgelines with views of the north and central parts of the national park and island.

AmSamFam is a new travel and lifestyle blog started by Melinda Clayville, an American expat from Idaho who created the blog to highlight island life and her family’s adventures around American Samoa. The blog is divided into two sections: Island Life and Explore AmSam. Island Life caters to those who are interested in moving to American Samoa to live, and provides useful information on relocating as well as expectations of island living.

You’ll hike up and down ladders with ropes for balance. The trail leads to Mount Alava Summit, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic view out across the island, before you return down another steep section of trail to Vatia Village. Over in the Manu’a Islands, you’ll find three more hikes to choose from. The Si’u Point Trail and Oge Beach Trail on Ofu and Olosega, and the Tumu Mountain Trail on Tau.

While Explore AmSam is for anyone hankering for a local adventure to explore our island’s natural wonders, unique hiking trails, and notable attractions, whether you are visiting for a weekend or have lived in American Samoa all your life! Explore American Samoa Travel Guide will be available for purchase and download in the Summer of 2020. In the meantime, you can find the Clayvilles and their American Samoa Adventures on YouTube at AmSamFam, AmSamFam.com, TravelingOTB.com, or at TravelingOTB on Facebook and Instagram.

Falling in love with Lalomanu Think Pacific Islands, think beaches. Beautiful beaches! Over the years we’ve certainly written about our fair share of good ones. And without a doubt, Lalomanu Beach on the southeast coast of Upolu is one of the very best. This stunning stretch of white sand and calm, clear blue water makes it a must-see. It also has a wonderfully laid back feel. There is plenty of room to find your own piece of sand and plenty of places to grab a tasty bite or ice cold Vailima beer. Yep, this is where you can just go with the flow. Visitors who would like to base themselves in this area have a number of basic options right on the beach. Aga Reef Resort is also very close by and just a little further on are Seabreeze Resort and Saletoga Sands Resort. All great options!

Jump in the deep end As you might expect, Samoa has an endless array of swimming spots. And there's none more impressive than To Sua Ocean Trench in Lotofaga village on the Southern coast of Upolu - there’s a big sign on the main road, so it’s easy to find. Access to water is via a wooden ladder - it is high and quite steep, but most people will be confident enough to negotiate the descent and climb back up. In fact it’s all part of the fun. An underground trench links the water hole to the ocean, so there’s a gentle roll, and the unusual mix of fresh and seawater creates random warm spots. But what really makes the experience is the view up - with the rock, lush foliage and blue sky creating a stunning vista. The waters are simply magnificent and the hole itself is surrounded by stunning gardens.

There she blows! When the swell is hitting the southwestern coast, the Alofaaga blowholes put on a brilliant show. The sea forces its way into the blowholes and shoots up as high as 30 metres.

© Samoa Tourism Authority

The locals will sometimes throw coconuts into the holes, which are then blasted into the air like they've been shot out of a cannon. The entrance to the blowholes is at Taga village and a small entry fee is required.

New Exclusive Villas The Exclusive Villas are quiet and tranquil surrounded by tropical gardens, with a King Bed and outdoor shower in a dedicated adults only area. Saletoga Sands Resort & Spa is a quality four star resort offering exceptional value accommodation, food and activities.

Time in town Apia is a city full of life and the markets reflect this. The Fugalei Market, which sits in the middle of town next to Apia bus station, is packed full of souvenirs to take home (such as wood carvings, jewellery, lava-lavas, hats, massage oils), delicious cooked food and a wide selection of exotic local produce. Apia Fish Market is also a fun place to visit. Make sure you sample some of the freshly cooked fish and chips. Delish!

Sweet seclusion at Seabreeze Nestled into its own private bay on the south coast of Upolu, Seabreeze Resort is the ideal spot for couples wanting peace, quiet and a touch of tropical luxury. With 12 villas, this is boutique style accommodation at its best - there's no sharing the resort with a hundred holidaymakers. At the rocky point of the beach sits the very special Honeymoon Suite. It’s surrounded by water on three sides and offers its lucky guests breathtaking views of the clear blue Pacific waters and fringing reef. When you feel like a swim it's a toss-up between the pool (with swim up bar) or taking a few steps down to the white sands of Seabreeze's private beach - either way you win. The food here is also first-class and the waterfront restaurant provides one of Samoa’s most picturesque dining views!

Tahiti

Hilton Moorea tops off overwater experience Sitting between two spectacular bays, Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa boasts a spectacular setting that was made for the classic Tahitian overwater experience. Since December, Hilton Moorea has put an extra bit of polish on these luxurious room types, including a full renovation of the roofs - management keeping the thatched style cover to maintain the traditional Polynesian look and feel. On top of that, the wooden sundecks and railings were refurbished too. With 62 square metres of space, stunning lagoon and mountain views and crystal clear waters below you, these luxurious rooms provide the perfect place to make your Pacific dreams come true!

Tahiti Tourisme picks new partner After a competitive pitch process, Tahiti Tourisme has selected Nouvelle Vague Marketing to represent The Islands of Tahiti in Australia and New Zealand. Translating to New Wave, Nouvelle Vague Marketing is headed up by tourism industry specialist Caroline Brunel. With more than 20 years experience in destination marketing, Caroline has worked across major DMOs and wholesale, on both client and agency side, around the globe including France, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand. With such a great understanding of not only French Polynesia, but also the tourism industry generally, Caroline and her team bring fresh ideas, incredible enthusiasm, and years of experience that we know will bring a new wave of excitement for The Islands of Tahiti.”

Conrad Bora Bora Nui – a taste for every occasion When you’re staying at a single resort and are likely to spend most of your time on that property, having a choice of dining options is a must! Which is why Conrad Bora Bora Nui makes an excellent choice for Tahiti bound travellers. Apart from the spectacular Bora Bora setting, the resort offers three first-class eateries for guests to choose from. Iriatai French Restaurant is the resort’s signature restaurant – think classic French cuisine and an open-air layout that looks across the lagoon. Quite spectacular! Prefer to spice things up? Head to the Banyan Chinese Restaurant which draws inspiration from provinces such as Canton and Fujian. There’s also a private room that seats up to 10 people, if you’d prefer a space to yourself. For more casual dining there’s Tamure Beach Grill. Set on the white sands overlooking the lagoon and swimming pool, this is the spot for relaxed daytime eats such as pizza, salads, seafood, sandwiches and sharing plates. On top of all that, guests can enjoy a Polynesian Dinner and Show, or Ahi Ma’a – food prepared in a traditional earth oven!

New Caledonia

18 holes in heaven The gentle rolling countryside surrounding the Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Spa & Golf Resort, provided the perfect canvas for Dye Group to design a par 72 championship golf course. Indeed, the world-famous golf course architects crafted what is easily one of the South Pacific’s best golf experiences. The course is kept in immaculate condition. The fairways are like carpet and the greens are true. Being relatively flat, the architects have tested Deva golfers by strategically placing fairway bunkers that gobble up errant tee shots. And they’ve protected each green with a network of bunkers too. If you go in the rough, don’t expect to find your ball – although you’ll probably find someone else’s! If you’re playing on a sunny day, hiring a cart will save you some energy and provide some shade. Otherwise, it’s a very pleasant walk. The pro-shop located in the resort foyer has everything you need, including some top-of-the-line hire clubs. And the driving range, putting green and chipping areas are well set-up for pre-round practice.

Wining and dining at Chateau Royal Noumea is well known as a foodie destination and one resort that delivers on this fine reputation is Chateau Royal Beach Resort and Spa. If you’d like to enjoy a quite drink and arguably the best sunset view in Noumea, the resort’s Le Warai Bar offers an intimate, laid back atmosphere. And not to mention, delicious cocktails! Simply take a seat on their designer sofas or secure a spot on the terrace overlooking the lagoon.

Escape to New Caledonia

Either way you can’t go wrong. If you’re feel like a bite, head downstairs to La Pirogue Restaurant, which is open for lunch and dinner. The focus is on Pacific inspired flavours with a Provencale-style twist. For example - fresh ‘Catch of the Day’ grilled fish served with Lifou vanilla sauce, coconut rice and wok-fried vegetables. And the list of yummy dishes goes on!

Only a short flight from New Zealand, Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Spa & Golf Resort offers a unique South Pacific experience between hills and pristine lagoon for your next holiday destination.

What a view. The reward for hiking Deva Domain

Enjoy the great outdoors in Deva Domain Visitors to New Caledonia tend to spend most, if not all of their time in and around Noumea. But not all roads lead to that vibrant city-by-the-sea. Turn left out of the airport (instead of right), drive north for 90 minutes and you’ll come to the serene Deva Domain. The Deva Domain runs along the coast near the small town of Bourail. With 8000 hectares of wide open spaces, 13 kilometres of white sand beach, hiking trails and biking trails, the Deva Domain has long been the enjoyed by both local residents and ‘city-folk’ escaping Noumea. The Deva Domain is home to some of New Caledonia’s best hikes and they’re all within easy access of Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Spa & Golf Resort which quietly sits inside the Domain. The closest circuit of tracks is right across the road from the resort’s front gate. For an amazing view, take the well-maintained track up the hill that sits directly behind the resort. The 30-minute climb is worth the effort. And anyone can do it. Even small children will make the summit with relative ease. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the lagoon, resort, golf course and the rest of the domain. The track forms part of a circuit that takes in two more peaks, before looping back to the starting point. If you want to explore more tracks within the domain, the resort's concierge can point you in the right direction. And don’t forget there are plenty of mountain bike trails too – best cycled in cool, early morning temperatures. And when it comes time to cool off. Well, just head for the beach!

Find comfort food in Noumea Seeking some culinary comfort? A trip to the municipal market in the city centre near the port is a good place to start. Open daily (except Monday), you will find clothing, arts, crafts and other souvenirs, as well as an extensive selection of fruit, vegetables, fresh fish and other produce. Grab a coffee and croissant and soak up the local atmosphere. Then, if you’re feeling indulgent, head to nearby patisseries Les Petit Choux and Chocolats Morand, where you can experience some of Nouméa’s finest hand-crafted sweet treats. L’Atelier Gourmand bakery on Route de l’Anse Vata is another local favourite, selling sweets and pastries as well as filled rolls and other savouries.

Museum shares surfing’s rich history Want to learn about surfing? While on dry land! Bishop Museum in Honolulu is presenting its new original exhibit “Mai Kinohi Mai: Surfing in Hawaii” through to 3 May 2020. Visitors will find the exhibit in its Castle Memorial Building. Utilising the museum’s research and collections in partnership with the local surfing community, the exhibit explores surfing’s history and ongoing technical and cultural developments, which have made the sport an international phenomenon. Highlights of the exhibit include displays of the oldest traditional Hawaiian surfboards alongside surfboards belonging to legendary surfers like Duke Kahanamoku. Interactive display teach visitors about surf forecasting, and archival photos and rare memorabilia at the exhibit share surfing’s roots in traditional Hawaiian culture and influence on modern Hawaii culture.

Take your tastebuds to Kauai Want to mix some Hawaii ‘chill time’ with some delicious local flavours? Here’s your chance. Tasting Kauai recently launched two new tours for foodies visiting the island. Its Kauai Happy Hour Tour spotlights cocktails and food pairings highlighting the island’s unique flavours. Foodies looking for a more hands-on tour experience can opt for the company’s Kauai Cooking Class Tour, guided by a local chef, which visits a local farmers market to gather and learn about local ingredients. Cooking experience is not needed!

Culture at the heart of Kaanapali Beach Hotel transformation Maui’s iconic Kaanapali Beach Hotel is set for a major renewal with the launch of the “Kealaula” project. Beginning in Spring 2020 (between March and May) the development plan has a healthy US$65 million budget. Highlights will include a major redesign of the 180-room Kauai Wing, a refresh of the sweeping courtyard including the introduction of additional native Hawaiian plants, the launch of a new oceanfront restaurant, Huihui, and an additional floor of parking. “The focus of our project is to enhance our opportunities to provide the exceptional and culturally enriching guest experiences for which Kaanapali Beach Hotel has become known,” said General Manager Mike White. “The direction from our owners is that the project must reflect and respect the Hawaiian culture and support our Po’okela programs that have been ongoing for over 30 years. In fact, our 'ohana of nearly 300 will remain fully employed at KBH, ensuring continuity for our guests throughout this process.”

The sweet way to explore the Big Island Looking for a fun family outing on the Big Island? Here it is! The Hawaii Forest and Trail, Hilo Chocolate and Waterfalls Tour is perfect for families as they learn about Hilo’s rich heritage on the way to a working cacao farm. At the farm, guests embark on an interactive tree-to-chocolate adventure that includes harvesting cacao pods, learning about the fermentation process and of course, chocolate tastings in the comfort of the Chocolate Bar. Yum! After everyone has their fill of chocolate, the adventure continues with a swim under a 120-ft waterfall. Hilo Chocolate & Waterfalls adventure includes light snacks and lunch. Gear provided includes walking sticks, daypacks and rain ponchos. And they pickup from select Hilo locations.

Mele Cascades. ©Vanuatu Tourism - David Kirkland

Don’t miss Mele Cascades One of Port Vila’s classic excursions is the trip up to the Mele Cascades and Waterfall. It starts with an easy 10 minute drive out of town. If you have your own vehicle that’s great, or you can book a tour via your resort, or direct through a local tour company. The walk to waterfall takes about 20 minutes – there are a few inclines and steps along the way – so it’s not suitable for toddlers or small children. But children of eight years and over should be fine. And any case, there’s no need to rush – you can simply take your time. The effort is worth it though. There are some gorgeous swimming holes to take a dip in and right at the top you can sit in a pool under a 30-metre high waterfall. Fun!

Blue Bay Bliss On the northern side of Mele Bay (just a few kilometres from the famous Mele Beach Bar), Blue Bay Resort is a supremely secluded spot that was made for peace, quiet and waterfront relaxation! Locally owned and operated, a stay here provides a chance to soak up some genuine Vanuatu warmth and hospitality. Adventure seekers will also love the activities nearby. Mele Cascade Waterfalls, The Secret Garden, Zipline, The Beach Bar, Hideaway Island and Mele Village are all just a few minutes away. And if you feel like popping into Port Vila, is an easy 15-minute shuttle ride away too!

Pentecost – the (real) home of bungy The inspiration for bungy jumping came from the original land divers of Pentecost Island. It takes over a month to build the tower using natural materials straight from the forest. When that’s complete each diver will select his own vine, which is then checked by a village elder to make sure it’s strong enough and long enough. Ten centimetres can mean the difference between life and death, so it pays to be very careful. As the men prepare to jump, the women sing and dance at the base of the tower. With the clap of his hands the diver leans forward and drops to the ground with his arms crossed. When performed perfectly the diver’s hair will touch the ground, making it fertile for the following year’s yam crop. The ritual, known as Nagol or N’gol, takes place every Saturday between April and June and seeing it first hand is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Champagne Beach, Santo – 10 out of 10 Drive north up the coast from Santo’s biggest town of Luganville and you’ll discover some of the most spectacular beaches in Vanuatu. About 45 minutes drive away is pure perfection, otherwise known as Champagne Beach. Imagine warm, translucent water, powdery white sand and offshore islands in the distance, all surrounded by dark green tropical rainforest. It really is magic. Despite this picture postcard set-up, the beach remains virtually crowd-free. There is no resort or any other form of accommodation on the beach, and the only people you’re likely to see are a handful of local families going about life as they always have. Most visitors will have the place to themselves, unless a cruise ship is visiting, in which case it’s best avoided on that day.

Conveniently located 20 minutes drive from the airport and 10 minutes from downtown Port Vila, Villa 25 is the ideal place for families who seek luxury without the bustle of a busy resort setting. Set on its own private beach, Villa 25 is home to three graciously appointed two-bedroom, air-conditioned villas each one designed to maximise views across Mele Bay and ensure privacy at the same time. Fitted out and decorated to the highest standard, each villa includes a fully equipped kitchen and private covered patio with sun loungers and a dining area. The full kitchen gives families the option to create meals (or even just snacks). It’s just a matter of purchasing local produce - be it French cheeses, organic beef, fresh fish or seasonal tropical fruits from the market. Or for a treat, Villa 25 can arrange for a private chef to prepare gourmet cuisine for your family, or organise catering to be prepared and delivered to your villa. Plus a handy provisioning service is available too. 36

The poolside lowana (gathering place) is just a few metres from the water’s edge overlooking a private sheltered beach. It’s the perfect setting for families to kayak, paddleboard, swim and snorkel amongst coral and tropical fish. The lowana features a fully equipped kitchen and dining area too - an amazing place for families to share a meal or enjoy a drink. Particularly as the sun sets over the water. Should you need any assistance during your stay, Villa 25’s manager and staff will be on hand to look after your every need. And they can pass on their local knowledge on everything from supermarkets to scenic flights. They can even organise mum and dad a massage or beauty treatments in the privacy of your own villa. If you and your family are looking for a luxurious holiday, Villa 25 is the perfect place to relax, unwind and feel the sand between your toes.
