Fresh is best Long term success in the travel industry requires re-invention. Such as providing the market with a fresh take on an established product. Or maybe starting from scratch and creating a new niche altogether. New facilities, new rooms, new menus, new marketing strategies, new management - they all work together to entice new customers and lure loyal followers back. One of the best ways to communicate this message to the key people that influence travel trade decisions is via trade shows. In this issue we cover two of the South Pacific’s main events. Fijian Tourism Expo (FTE) and PPT (Parau Parau Tahiti) – each one bringing a global network of travel reps to their respective destinations. We also put the spotlight on two very different Fijian resorts: Luxury private island, VOMO, which has recently extended its dedicated adults-only space and Garden Island Resort in Taveuni – a property that provides a brilliant base for visiting divers and adventure travellers alike. On top of all that, we bring you travel updates from across our beautiful region. We hope you have a successful winter and we’ll see you all again in spring.

RESORT SPOTLIGHT VOMO ISLAND FIJI
Private island par excellence. by Fran McDermott
4
islandtime Winter 2019
There are some places you get the opportunity to visit, and as soon as you leave you are planning your next trip back. That place for me is VOMO – the luxurious, private island resort that sits serenely, 35 kilometres north west of Nadi. The setting is what tropical dreams are made of. On the ‘resort’ side of the island you have a flawless white sand beach with clear blue water. On the other side (and we’re only talking a 5-10 minute stroll away) is a mirror image - same white sand, same crystal clear water, but not a villa or luxury residence to be seen. Guests simply chose the side they prefer. (It’s such a hard life.) At the western tip of the island you can take in glorious sunsets over Vomo Lai Lai - Vomo’s ruggedly beautiful smaller neighbour which is uninhabited, but serves as the perfect place for a private picnic. Vomo is the definition of laid back, barefoot luxury. There are only 32 villas, so you only ever see a few other couples or families strolling around the resort. At times it feels like you literally have the whole resort to yourself. It’s a satisfying feeling to have. Adults searching for that extra bit of exclusivity can head for The Rocks – Vomo’s recently re-developed adults-only haven. The stylish upgrade included an impressive infinity pool, along with spacious decking and super-comfy outdoor furniture. There is plenty of room to spread out with a choice of loungers, swinging chairs, in-pool loungers, couches, cabanas and cocoons. The Rocks is also open for dinner twice a week. The mouth-watering menu consists of Asian-style sharing plates. Vomo Executive Chef, Michael Fosbender has put together a casual, tasty light lunch menu for those who simply cannot drag themselves away from the pool. Vomo’s menus change daily and you will not be disappointed with the selections and extensive wine list – the quality is top notch and there’s something to suit every taste. Along with the villa room options, Vomo also has a selection of four 'Residences' – essentially these are expansive, architecturally designed beach houses, where no expense has been spared. The type of places where you can imagine a Hollywood star or a business mogul might escape to. Vomo’s Residences are a top-end choice. But if you do have the means, they deliver a bucket list experience for a multi-generational family visit, a girls’ weekend away, or a group of friends. All come with their own pools, dedicated butler and basically everything else you could wish for. Stay here and you simply will not want to leave. They are also designed in such a way that all the bedrooms are completely private. Justin King, the new general manager had only been on the island approximately five weeks when I met him. His relaxed demeanour makes me think he had been there five years. Justin can be seen wandering around the resort and is always keen to a catch up with guests to see how their holiday is going. Between Justin and marketing supremo Karen Marvell, they could be referred to as the Vomo Dream Team! Speaking of people, at Vomo everybody knows your name. From the check-in team, to the food and beverage team, to the smiling lady in the boutique, I was greeted at every corner with a friendly and personal hello. I didn’t visit Vomo with the family in tow this time, but have done in the past. Vomo offers a carefree holiday for mums and dads alike. The spotless Kids Village offers plenty of space with a huge playroom with top quality toys, a media room, cubby house, undercover play areas, slides, swings, arts and crafts, outdoor climbing frames and more. And for the really little ones, there are Baby Butlers ready for songs and cuddles as mum and dad laze on the beach, or perhaps enjoy the spa or nine-hole golf course! Vomo has been one of Fiji’s standard setting resorts for some time now. After this latest visit I’m happy to say their commitment to premium, private luxury is as strong as ever. And above all else they deliver it at every level. The only problem is that once you’ve immersed yourself in Vomo, most other resorts (even the really good ones), don’t seem quite as good any more. You’ll be wishing you were in Vomo. And planning how to get back there.

RESORT SPOTLIGHT GARDEN ISLAND RESORT, TAVEUNI
Quench your thirst for adventure. by Matt Taylor
@adamwalters.com
Like most travel, the further you go off the beaten track, the more relaxed and authentic your travel experience will be. Fiji is no exception. Taveuni is Fiji’s third largest island and only a 90-minute flight from Nadi. It’s home to lush rainforest, cascading waterfalls and arguably Fiji’s most vibrant marine environment.
Those who make the effort to explore Taveuni will be rewarded with the kind of experience that mainstream travellers could only dream about. And one of the best places to take it all in is Garden Island Resort. It’s fair to say that Garden Island Resort is a favourite with visiting divers. There are a wide variety of world-class dive sites within a short distance of the resort. Many of them have colourful names like Rainbow Reef, Great White Wall, The Ledge, Annie's Bommie, Blue Ribbon Eel Reef and Fish Factory. Colourful by name, colourful by nature! Garden Island Resort is a PADI 5 Star dive resort, so divers will be in their element. They have a fully equipped dive centre on site with three 30-foot dive boats and SCUBAPRO dive gear and equipment. Their custom built pier also provides immediate access to the water. And the professional (and Fijian friendly) dive crew are experts at making sure visiting divers soak up the best of the island's underwater wonders in the safest way possible. A variety of certified dive courses are also available for newbies, right through to experts. While they have the dive angle well and truly covered, it would be a mistake to pigeon hole Garden Island as a ‘diver's resort’. Anyone that has woken up to beautiful panoramic views of the ocean and ben lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves will testify to that! Diver or not diver, this is bliss.

The resort boasts 15 ocean front suites each with a private patio, and 15 ocean view rooms fully refurbished with private balconies. Each room provides private space and luxurious comfort. The food is also fantastic. Fresh local ingredients are used as much as possible. Guests with special dietary requirements will also be catered for – think yummy gluten-free pizzas, dairy-free meals and vegetarian dishes. Guests in need of pampering are also taken care of. The resort’s Nature Spa is located in a private bure, surrounded by natural jungle and a rock waterfall. There’s a long list of massage therapies, plus other yummy treats like facials, natural sugar scrubs, manicures and pedicures. If you weren’t floating on a cloud already, you soon will be! Garden Island Resort provides guests with easy access to Taveuni’s vast unspoilt beauty. The island’s national park is one of Fiji’s treasures and there you’ll find any number of secluded spots. You can take in the surrounding landscape on horseback, enjoy natural waterslides and waterfalls, visit the local villages or head down to the water sports centre to go kayaking or snorkelling. In a nutshell, Garden Island Resort provides the perfect base to explore Taveuni. If you have a thirst for adventure, there is something for everyone. www.gardenislandresort.com Winter 2019

Parau Parau Tahiti Tahiti welcomes the world by Fran McDermott
When you’re selling and marketing travel products, there is, and never will be a substitute for a first-hand experience. Seeing a place with your own eyes, savouring the local food, swimming in clear blue waters, smelling the clean salt air, and of course, immersing yourself in the local culture and connecting with the people that call it home. Indeed this was essence of Parau Parau Tahiti, Tahiti’s annual travel trade showcase. Parau Parau Tahiti provided an opportunity for Tahiti’s global partners to strengthen their relationships with local operators. And give them the chance to understand the complexities of Tahiti and be able to sell the various islands to different audiences back home. For media like us, it was a chance to be right in the middle of it all. Gaining insights about local product, understanding the buyer perspective, and exploring the islands through our own eyes.
Meeting time. Headquarters for the meeting part of Parau Parau Tahiti was the grand setting of the Presidency of French Polynesia. For three days Tahitian operators got to meet all of the key product and marketing people from their market. And although meetings were a quick 15 minutes, it’s time enough to understand how each other work and sell. The insights prove invaluable and relationships are formed. From a local perspective these priceless conversations provide an insight on how to adapt their product to suit specific markets around the world.
Island adventures. Although the meetings are where the business takes place, you could say the real inspiration comes with the pre and post-event experiences. Event organisers did 8

an amazing job of mixing things up. In the space of four or five days, I was able to sail the waters of Raiatea, snorkel with stingrays, sit back in pure five-star luxury in Bora Bora and more. Other highlights included visiting some of Tahiti’s villa rentals. These are quite affordable and very much like your own bach in paradise. A visit to the local pearl museum was also memorable. The time and care it takes to produce these natural wonders is astounding.
Challenging perceptions. Tahiti is perceived as an expensive destination. But at an event like Parau Parau Tahiti, visitors can challenge that perception in person. Historically Tahiti’s pricing was above its neighbours and competitors, but today this is not necessarily the case. In fact, it has become more and more common for an agent to quote a true five-star south pacific property and compare one in Tahiti – only to find the Tahitian property costs less.
What the future holds. Rob Thompson, Regional Director of Tahiti Tourisme NZ has been a prominent Tahiti marketer for some time and he believes the future will only be brighter. “The event will continue to grow as interest in Tahiti continues to grow in even more markets. Now that there have been two successful annual events, the learnings will be incorporated into 2020 to add more value for the visiting buyers and for our local partners,” Rob said.

Tahiti Ia Ora Beach Resort’s luxury revamp The 12 luxury overwater bungalows have reopened at Tahiti Ia Ora Beach Resort after a multi-million dollar revamp. The makeover is described by the renowned Sofitel group as a “refined and understated sense of modern luxury, with a signature touch of French decadence”. Guests can enjoy the champagne provided on arrival while admiring tropical fish through their glass panel of the bungalow’s floor. Each bungalow is equipped with a king-size bed, a sofa bed and can accommodate two adults and one child under 12 years of age. Most importantly, each one features a private terrace to take in the breathtaking Tahiti sunsets. General Manager Mr Didier Lamoot says the bungalows will “appeal to travellers seeking authentic Tahitian luxury experiences”. Located on the west coast of Tahiti Island, Tahiti Ia Ora Beach Resort by Sofitel, sits on the edge of the only white sand beach on the island with views to Moorea Island.
Discover Peak Tahiti Tahiti Nui Helicopters (THN) is offering a scenic tour with a birds eye view of some of Tahiti’s most dramatic landscapes including its highest peak, The Orohena Mountains. The ‘Very Heart’ tour takes guests over the blue lagoon of Punaauia to the entrance of the Punaruu Valley. Here it flies over the famous orange trees plateau and the island’s own caldera, a large cauldronlike hollow that formed following a volcanic eruption. At Papenoo, the largest valley on the island guests will view the Maroto relay where the rivers and vertiginous waterfalls are a sight to be seen. The dazzling descent toward Aorai then offers exceptional panoramic views of the ocean. On the trip home, the helicopter follows the waterfalls of the Pirae Valley, to its landing point in the town of Papeete. This is one of three scenic flights offered by THN. For a further afield flight, guests can take the ‘Moz from Tahiti’ tour to the island of Mororea where they’ll discover the famous pierced mountain, the pineapple plantations of Opunohu Bay and Mount Rotui.
A trio of adventures Moana Adventure’s offers three exciting encounters in one tour, in the Shark & Ray Coral Garden Snorkel Safari. The 2.5 hour boat tour begins in the knee high crystal clear waters of Bora Bora lagoon where guests can meet, then swim with the famously gentle and elegant stingrays. Then, for the adrenaline fuelled part, the tour heads further out in the lagoon for a swim with sharks, guided by local operators who promise that swimming near these feared creatures will forever change your view of them. However, if that’s a step too far, the sharks can be viewed from the comfort of the boat. The final leg of the tour happens in the shallow waters of Toopua where guests can snorkel among the abundant underwater wildlife of the coral gardens, with hundreds of tropical fish and colourful coral. Heading ashore with three adventures ticked off the bucket list, one could comfortably put their feet up for the rest of the trip. The Shark & Ray Coral Garden Snorkel Safari departs Monday to Saturday at 9am and 1pm.

Air Tahiti Nui helps Kiwis take flight New Zealanders can now holiday in Tahiti for less, with the release of a new lower fare. Air Tahiti Nui is offering fares as low as $771 return (incl taxes) from Auckland to Papeete. It's a price airline General Manager Daniel Eggenberger says quashes the idea that Tahiti is an unattainable holiday option. He says the new fare option, alongside the boom of the global AirBnB market means people can experience cost-effective travel without holidaying like a backpacker. The airline offers five services a week between Auckland and Papeete and Eggenberger says this combination of cost and accessibility will help visitor numbers climb. "Tahiti has earned its place as a highly aspirational destination and is very much a bucket list holiday for many the world over. However, Tahiti and her beautiful islands also offer a wide range of affordable options for visitors. Kiwis may be surprised to learn that they could enjoy a holiday with a pool and ocean views from as little as NZ$100 per night.” With over 300 independently owned apartments and guest house properties on Tahiti’s mainland and islands, Eggenberger says Kiwis can live like a local, buying local produce from markets and enjoying Tahiti’s vibrant food scene which includes ‘Roulottes’ (food trucks) and many local café and restaurant dining options.
Immerse yourself in Tahitian culture The Arioi Cultural Centre began as a non-profit organisation providing access to extracurricular activities and educational support for children from Papara. It’s now fast becoming a ‘must-do’ for tourists wanting to learn about Tahitian arts and culture. From Tahitian dance to polyphonic singing and traditional ukulele percussions, visitors can discover Polynesian arts and traditions during a two hour Arioi Experience. This includes a traditional welcoming ceremony, two cultural workshops (such as tapa, braiding, dance, percussion, or sculpture) and a taste of Polynesian culinary delights. Ten percent of the fee is donated to an association that supports access to cultural activities by disadvantaged children.
A home away from home There is a new way to experience Tahiti, with the freedom, privacy and comfort of a home rental. Tahiti Homes is a trail blazing holiday-home management company offering a wide range of villas, houses and apartments in Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora and other islands of French Polynesia. Most properties have a private pool and/or a semi-private beach and some are fully staffed. Homes range from studios to 12-room villas to private islands and can cater for honeymooners, families, weddings or small group retreats. The service can be a budget friendly way to accommodate large groups, and the local company offers a tailored service that goes well beyond a key handover. That service can include booking activities, pampering sessions, in home dinners and transport. Head to Tahiti Homes website to surf the abundance of options on offer.

Major makeover for Hilton Moorea spa Maybe it’s because of the French influence. Maybe it’s the inspiration of the natural surroundings. Regardless of the reason, Tahiti is home to some of the South Pacific’s finest spas. Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa is one such example. Whether you are there to relax, energise or heal your mind, all treatments and rituals lead to a state of blissful peace and wellness. Recently the spa also underwent a full redesign, with guests enjoying an ‘enlightened’ area made of natural materials and fresh tropical vibes. Tahitian treasure It's hard sometimes to find that very special souvenir on a trip away but in Tahiti it’s easy. Fijian Tourism Expo Fiji inspires the trade by Fran McDermott
At the end of May, Fiji played host to the 5th annual Fijian Tourism Expo (FTE). The numbers were impressive. Around 160 international buyers and 14 international media, meeting more than 300 exhibitors! Some visitors travelled from as far away as the Ukraine, Italy and Netherlands – a reflection of the global reach that destination Fiji has nurtured. Numbers aside, Fijians know how to welcome you with big smiles and warm hearts, so while there was much business to be done, the genuine hospitality always shined through. Yes, this is where happiness finds you.
We cannot and should not compromise our environment and culture for the growth of the tourism sector. We simply cannot afford to be short-sighted and compromise our future in the name of development.”
The full range of hoteliers, tour operators, travel agents, airline representatives and activity providers, covered the full range of markets - honeymoon, wedding, boating and cruise, adventure seekers, MICE, the young and independent or families. There really was something for everyone. Which is one of Fiji’s greatest strengths, regardless of who you are, you’ll find a place that suits your needs.
She also quoted some very impressive figures. In 2018, Fiji welcomed a record 870,309 visitors. The industry is now worth $2 billion and it is well on track to reach $2.2 billion by 2021. It also employs one in three people.
There was also an emphasis on working towards a more sustainable tourism industry. One that has environmental and socio-economic benefits at heart. In her opening speech, Hon. Premila Kumar - Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism made this point. “It is so important that everything we do, is done with the view of creating harmony between sustainability and development.

Fiji no doubt has potential to grow further. After all Fiji is more than a sun, sea and sand destination. They have spectacular mountains, unique wildlife, rich culture and heritage and lush green forests too. Even though it lasts less than a week, FTE plays an important role in that growth, providing a platform that allows the trade to engage, make contacts, forge new relationships, strengthen existing ones and most importantly, make lifelong friends and do some business. With a big bula smile of course.

Musket Cove ready for Regatta Week Musket Cove has long been a port of call for yachties visiting Fijian waters and in early spring the resort will once again play host to one of the South Pacific’s most famous sailing events – Fiji Regatta Week 2019. Festivities will run from 13 to 18 September. This will be the 36th time the event has been held! As always the emphasis is on having a ball on the water and back on land. And it’s not just for the yachties either. Musket Cove’s guests are more than welcome to join in the fun. These include the Sandbank Race and Fun Day, with chilled beverages and food available on the sandbank. Plus a tug-o-war, beer drinking competition and other fun events. There will also be a host of live entertainment. Some of Fiji’s finest bands will be playing with soulful sounds and classic tunes from Nem & Talei, dance favourites with Knox Brotherhood and Closing Night will feature the ever popular, Inside Out. If you're planning a trip to Fiji, this is definitely one event you’ll want to be part of.
New Winter tastes
Musket Cove puts a real emphasis on serving a wide variety of high quality food options. A particular focus has been creating light, healthy dishes - the kind that are full of flavour, but cater to different dietary needs. Take these yummy examples from their recently released Winter Lunch Menu – Tuna poke bowl with sesame soy marinated tuna, pickled ginger, brown rice, avocado and radish. Or Charred Mediterranean vegetables on couscous, black olives and tahini dressing. The new Winter Dinner Menu is equally delicious. Dukkah crusted salmon fillet with roast beetroot, rocket and cucumber salad or Island tomato and buffalo mozzarella linguini with basil and a hint of chilli. All so good, all so tempting!
Your Fiji island paradise awaits...
Just steps from the pristine sands of Malolo Lailai in the Mamanuca Islands, Fiji, sits the iconic Musket Cove, a four-star island resort which blends the barefoot ambience of a tropical island with the warm hospitality and traditions of the Fijian people. inquiries@musketcovefiji.com | musketcovefiji.com

Recognition f lows for Six Senses Fiji
Carl Amos
Six Senses have successfully created an experience that sets them apart from others. Their mantra is sustainable luxury. Think personal wellness screening that points you towards a more wholesome lifestyle. A hilltop yoga pavilion where you can stretch your body and mind (while overlooking the sparkling blue sea). Freshly squeezed vegetable juices, homemade kombucha and organic ingredients – plate after nutritious plate. These are just a few of the nourishing qualities to be enjoyed at Six Senses Fiji. Then add in top-shelf service, a beach that Tourism Fiji shot in their latest brand campaign, and a selection of fine villas and suites and architecturally designed residence options. It’s the complete package for those who appreciate tropical luxury, that leaves a mark on you and less of a mark on the surrounding environment. It’s also no surprise the resort has gained a number of awards for its commitment and quality. Last year the annual Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific (HICAP) named Six Senses Fiji the winner of the Climate Action Category. Then TIME Magazine released its first list of the World’s Top 100 Greatest Places – it included Six Senses Fiji. Fast forward to 2019. Luxury Travel Magazine Australia released their 2019 Gold List. Six Senses Fiji won the title for Best Overseas Luxury Family Resort. It also made the finalist list for two other categories in the Gold List - Best Overseas Luxury Resort and Best South Pacific Luxury Resort. All fine achievements for a resort that is still very much a recent addition to the Fiji market. Of course, none of this success would happen without great people. A big part of Six Senses' attraction is the personal service. And it begins from the second you step foot on the island when you’re introduced to your very own GEM (Guest Experience Maker). If you need anything big or small, they are your go-to-guy or girl. 18

Key back office staff also have the same level of guest contact, and they blend together different touchpoints while guests are at Six Senses Fiji. In April 2019, Frans Westraadt became the new General Manager of Six Senses Fiji. After five years of immersion in the Six Senses family (as Resident Manager at Six Senses Laamu, Maldives, and Resort Manager at Six Senses Yao Noi, Thailand), his Six Senses skillset is already proving to be a major asset and gamechanger for the resort. Recently appointed Sales and Marketing Director, Carl Amos also brings a wealth of South Pacific travel experience to his role. He is no stranger to Fiji, previously holding the position of Marketing Manager for South Seas Cruises and before that he was Director of Sales and Marketing for Sheraton Samoa Hotels and Resorts based in Samoa as well as Director, Global Sales for Starwood Hotels & Resorts in New Zealand. Fiona Winger has been promoted to Resort Manager, Six Senses Fiji. She has led the team from an operational perspective since October 2018. Fiona was previously Rooms Division Manager at Sheraton Tokoriki Island Resort & Spa, and also Sheraton Fiji Resort and Westin Fiji Resort on Denarau. Fiona’s depth of knowledge on Fiji resorts is unparalleled and she will be leading the day-to-day operational team at Six Senses Fiji. Needless to say, Six Senses Fiji is in very good hands. And likewise, guests are in very good hands too.
Getting there Six Senses Fiji is located on Malolo Island in the Mamanuca Group. There are two ways to get from the mainland out to Malolo Island. First by scheduled speedboat transfer leaving from the Six Senses private pier at Port Denarau. Six Senses Fiji owns two luxury speedboats and guests can be transported directly to Six Senses Fiji. For those who don’t wish to wait for the scheduled transfer, private speedboat transfers can be arranged. The other option is the 12-minute helicopter transfer directly from Nadi International Airport, with the Six Senses helipad at the rear of the property.

Fiji Airways flies into the future with new aircrafts Fiji’s National Airline, with the Fijian Government, has announced two new-generation planes will join its fleet this year. The airline says the two A350 XWBs are a commitment to passenger satisfaction and sustainability. The planes will mostly be used to service popular routes between the US and Australia, Combining the latest aerodynamics, new Rolls-Royce engines and the use of lightweight materials, the planes are expected to save 25 per cent in fuel burn, operating costs and carbon dioxide emissions, compared to previous generation crafts of a similar-size. “Ultimately, a luxury, world-class destination, like Fiji, deserves a luxury, world-class travel experience and that’s exactly what these aircraft will deliver. For our guests, the holiday starts the moment they board the aircraft,” said Fiji Airways CEO Mr. Andre Viljoen. Business Class will feature fully lie-flat beds and Economy Class has Recaro seats which are ranked among the most comfortable long-haul economy class seats on the market. The aircraft has the latest generation inflight entertainment system and WiFi connectivity. Malolo Island Fiji Following the passion of Executive Chef Ryan Ward, Malolo Island Resort has turned its culinary focus to the freshest local seafood. The catch comes directly from local fisherman, fishing and diving in the Mamanuca region, cutting out the middleman. This means the fisherman get the profits directly and Malolo gets the freshest seafood. Ward is also a keen fisherman, and whatever he catches goes on the menu that very night. He believes that with such a resource comes a responsibility and he is focused on sustainability in his kitchen, turning away lobsters that come with eggs or fish that are undersized, and any fish in breeding season. As well as being fresh, the cuisine at Malolo is masterfully cooked, with dishes that use Fijian produce in modern way. Ward is now using modern techniques to reduce the sugar and fat content in Fijian desserts. Try the Roasted Coconut Ice cream which uses only coconut cream and honey or the ‘Cassava Crumpet', a lighter and fluffier dish than the traditional cassava cake. Or how about the Chocolate Mousse Semi-Sphere, made using world class Fijiana Cacao chocolate and local young coconut sorbet. Heaven.

His connection with key wholesalers, airline and industry partners and his own team led to his nomination as an excellent ambassador for the two Fiji properties and the Outrigger Hospitality Group in general. Castaway Island General Manager, Mr Steven Andrews said that the Outrigger Group and specifically Castaway Island were extremely lucky to have such a loyal and committed advocate and one who certainly deserves recognition for his dedication and hard work.

Pacific Island Air Your passport to beautiful Fiji Fiji is blessed with some superb mainland resorts, but for some visitors the ‘only’ Fiji is ‘island’ Fiji. It’s understandable, given the flawless white sand beaches, clear blue waters and laid back vibe that an island experience delivers. The only hurdle is getting there. An extensive network of ferries run out of Port Denarau, however the extra hours associated with a sea transfer can soon add up. Especially when your international flight times don’t match the ferry schedule. The other easier, much quicker transfer option is to fly with a company like Pacific Island Air by seaplane or helicopter. On a recent family trip to Paradise Cove (Yasawa Islands), we had the pleasure and convenience of a seaplane transfer. After landing at Nadi International, it was the simple matter of strolling across to the Domestic Terminal and checking in for a flight that departed 30 minutes later. No mucking around. No bored, irritable kids. Taking off in a seaplane from tarmac seems a bit odd at first, but once you’re in the air, the wheels come up and after a scenic 20-minute flight you’re touching down on smooth blue water directly in front of your resort. A boat picks you and your luggage up and within a minute or so you’re there. Relaxed and ready for island time. As with any travel it’s also nice to know you’re in safe hands. Pacific Island Air is part of Christchurch based GCH Aviation. GCH were recently accepted into Virtuoso’s selective portfolio of luxury travel partners – an honour that is only bestowed after passing through a rigorous acceptance process. On top of that Pacific Island Air will be adding two more helicopters to their existing fleet. These are due to be flying in August. Which means even more ways you can discover the beauty of Fiji.

The Ultimate Girls Week Away! We all know that many women lead very busy lives. Which is why it’s healthy to have a little time out from it all. Plantation Island Resort has come up with the perfect antidote for frazzled females! The inaugural "Ultimate Girls Week Away" will be held at the resort 15 – 22 February 2020. The event is a seven-day women-only getaway that has the exclusive charter of the resort. The keynote speaker will be Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the best selling book Eat Pray Love, and the week will include various workshops, activities, adventures, wellness programs and entertainment. Sounds like the ideal way to start the year!
Everyone’s happy at Hilton Fiji Although Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa is part of Denarau’s multi-resort development, its position on eastern tip of the island makes it the most private. Great location aside, the resort has many more features that make it popular with guests. The open plan room layouts are spacious and have a seamless indoor outflow flow. They’re ideal for couples and families alike. The two groups are catered for in other ways too. Couples can escape the noise at Koro, the resorts dedicated adults-only club. Think gym, bar, restaurant, pool area and peace and quiet. And at the other end of the resort, the young ones can play until their hearts’ content at IKA Kids Club. And the icing on the cake? The resort has a first-class selection of dining options. They include Nuku, a splendid poolside dining restaurant. And Maravu, an Asianinspired beachfront eatery that adds a touch of spice to any holiday.

American Samoa
Whales return to local waters Humpback whales are returning to American Samoa! Whales can be seen in the waters around American Samoa from about mid July to November, though dates of arrival can vary from year to year. These long-distance migrants arrive from the feeding grounds in the Antarctic. They spend winters in the warm waters of the South Pacific. Amazingly, they do not feed at all while they are here, but instead spend their time mating and giving birth. Visitors regularly see them from land at any point on the island that has a view of the ocean, especially sites on the western side like Sliding Rock. Mothers, especially, can spend time very close to shore with their young calves. Visitors should make sure their eyes are peeled!
Exploring the depths The exploration vessel, E/V Nautilus owned by the Ocean Exploration Trust under the direction of Dr Robert Ballard (who discovered the ship wrecks of the 'Titanic' and the battleship 'Bismarck') has partnered with the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa to under take deep sea research around American Samoa at the end of this month. E/V Nautilus will collect baseline information on deepsea and mesophotic habitat, conduct seafloor mapping, and targeted sampling for potential discovery of new species!
National Park creates new exhibition space The National Park of American Samoa, one of the island’s main visitor attractions, has expanded its visitor centre in Pago Pago. The extra space was put to good use immediately with special exhibits and demonstrations taking pride of place. The new exhibits showcase the cultural heritage and natural history of Samoa. The centrepiece of the new exhibit features a sperm whale skull. In 2015, a sperm whale carcass washed up in the park in Ofu. Park staff spent over three years preparing the bones for display and designing and installing an exhibit. Other exhibits feature a six foot by six foot siapo (tapa cloth) created by local community college students and an ‘enu fish basket woven with traditional materials by a local craftsman. Every morning, traditional weavers join park staff in the visitor centre to talk about the importance of weaving to Samoan traditions while giving live demonstrations of their craft.
New signage points the way A new tourism initiative has seen the erection of new signs across the islands. The Visitor Sites project aims to identify significant sites, and to design a sign concept that is both eye catching and uniquely Samoan. Although this is a small project, it is part of a broader Tourism Masterplan that aims to promote local offerings. To enhance the visitor experience even further, these locations (along with a description of their history or significance) may also be added to the recently launched American Samoa App.
Vaeafe appointed SPTO Chairman Anyone who has worked with travel in American Samoa will no know the smiling face of David Vaefe. David has been Executive Director of the American Samoa Visitors Bureau for many years, and he now has an additional role as the new Chairperson of The South Pacific Tourism Organisation. David brings more than 20 years of experience in the national and regional tourism industry and is looking forward to his role as Chairperson, “It’s an exciting time to continue moving the organisation forward and remain relevant in the changing global climate. This is the first time that two members of the smaller island states are holding positions of the Chair and Deputy Chair.” (The Deputy Chair is Mrs Felicity Bollen from Niue). SPTO has a new Strategic Plan for 2020-2024 and is committed to elevating tourism to the ministerial and leaders level through stronger advocacy. “This is part of our strategy to support SPTO as the organisation that will promote and develop regional tourism as a priority for the region,” David said.

Imagination Island gets stamp of approval Many New Zealanders will know TV programme ‘Fish of the Day’ hosted by the Clarke Gayford (the Prime Minister’s fiancé). While filming in the Solomon Island’s, Clarke and crew had the pleasure of staying in the amazing over-water bungalows of Imagination Island - one of the Solomon Islands’ best kept secrets. Just a short ride from bustling Gizo in the country’s Western Province, and smack bang in the middle of one of the Solomon Islands’ best diving, surfing and fishing regions, the resort offers overwater one and two-bed bungalows complete with private en suite and environmentally friendly composting toilet facilities and all furnished with locally made wood, bamboo and cane furniture and complete with hammocks and nets. International dive conference a major success The Solomon Islands recently staged of one of the world’s largest dive medical conferences - the South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society’s (SPUMS) 48th Annual Scientific Meeting in Honiara. Attracting delegates from as far afield as New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, the Middle East and the USA, the event was an excellent opportunity to showcase the country’s world-class diving. The MICE market is relatively small, it showed the country could successfully deliver a major convention to an international audience.
Tourism CEO invited to PATA Board There was strong recognition for the Solomon Islands on the international tourism stage and huge kudos for Tourism Solomons when CEO, Josefa ‘Jo’ Tuamoto was invited to join the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) executive board. The move follows Mr Tuamoto’s attendance at the ‘PATA Annual Summit 2019’ in Cebu, Philippines, last week where, taking part in a leadership debate, he gave an impassioned presentation on the United Nation Sustainable Development Goal 8 - ‘Sustainable economic growth and decent jobs for all’. Describing the invitation as a “real feather in the cap” not just for the Solomon Islands but the entire Pacific region, CEO Tuamoto said he was extremely humbled by the invitation and to have so much trust placed in his hands by the leadership of the Asia-Pacific’s most highly respected travel industry organisation. Niue
Snorkelling wonders In Niue visitors have the opportunity to experience spectacular snorkelling spots with an amazing abundance of fish, corals and other marine life that inhabit the islands waters. One of Niue’s greatest features is its incredibly clear water; this, teamed with extensive coral reefs, makes Niue the perfect place to snorkel. Visitors are spoilt for choice, with numerous fantastic snorkelling spots around the island ranging from small private beaches and swimming caves to secluded coves and chasms. Some of these hidden chasms were formerly reserved exclusively for ancient Niuean Kings, so they come with a rich history. Many of the areas are equipped with information boards, picnic areas, toilets and showers and are well signposted, so you can discover them with ease. You can also explore the outer reef by snorkel, with guided trips available, allowing guests to get in the water with the resident spinner dolphins if they’re around. Snorkelling gear is available for hire on the island, with some accommodators also offering gear to guests or for hire.
New dining on Niue When it comes to dining, Niue punches well above its weight. The island’s most recent addition to its dining lineup - Wok on the Rock - is now open in Alofi. The restaurant offers tasty Asian fusion and Chinese cuisine, with the menu changing daily. Definitely worth a visit during your next stay.
Sustainable solutions As part of the Sustainable Niue Campaign, Niue Tourism have sponsored the people of Niue with 2 x reusable shopping bags per household. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts, conservation projects and environmental initiatives planned, as Niue aims to become more sustainable. Visitors are also encouraged to take out what they bring in with regards to plastic containers and packaging – including bringing their own reusable bags for any shopping purchases.
Markets-a-plenty Niue has some great local markets happening: • The Niue Local Market in Alofi now runs at the new time of Monday and Friday, 5-8am and Wednesdays 6am onwards. • The Niue Island Organic Night market is on at 5pm the first Friday of each month, with a variety of local food and produce for sale. • A new Women at Work Market at the Tukaiavi Grounds, is held every Saturday morning, 6am - 12noon, with crops, umu, polapola, espresso coffee, handicrafts, coconuts and more.

Secluded seductive Samoa Seabreeze Resort is one Samoa’s most awarded properties. But as well-deserved accolades continues to flow, the owners and staff just seem to go about their business.
Satisfied with the praise, but much more concerned about their real reward – providing a memorable experience for the couples that choose to stay there. The secluded location on the south coast of Upolu is a reflection of what makes Seabreeze Resort so special. If it weren’t for its modest sign, you wouldn’t even know it was there. Which is why this adults-only resort is perfect for honeymooners and couples. Privacy. Seclusion. Laid back luxury. Not a place that chases the limelight, rather a sanctuary where couples can connect far from the hustle and bustle of home.
Tropical villas with flow The resort’s various accommodation options are carefully dotted around the edge of the bay. Each villa has been designed with outdoor living in mind. Each one has ocean, lagoon and pool views with the added comfort of individual thatched pavilions or courtyards. Each room has also been structured with the tropics in mind, encouraging natural ventilation from the trade winds. Of course air-conditioning is on-tap should you need it! While most couples will spend a lot of their time soaking up the sun, poolside or on the beach, the villas provide a haven of comfort and peace.
A new lagoon view The newest room addition is an elevated lagoon pool villa that captures expansive sea views. (On a clear day you can see the wispy outline of American Samoa
floating in the distance.) Entry is via a private gated courtyard. A spa pool with outdoor hot water shower awaits. The courtyard connects with the bedroom via French doors, creating a haven of tropical living. The hardest decision of your day will be deciding whether to relax and enjoy the view, laze on your outdoor lounge or have fun in your bubbling spa pool. And why not! This is a place to live the dream (at least for a few days).
Dining delights When it comes to cuisine, Seabreeze also delivers. Their award-winning waterfront restaurant is considered one of Samoa’s finest. Enjoying breakfast in the warm morning sun is a great way to ease into the day. And a moonlit threecourse meal is the perfect end. It’s no wonder visitors staying in other resorts often make a special trip to eat there.
Natural warmth Location, accommodation and food aside, the staff add an X-factor that keeps couples coming back. The resort invests a lot of time and effort into training, but at the same time staff are encouraged to be themselves. Welcoming visitors with respect and warm Samoan hospitality. Professional and personal at the same time. Just like Seabreeze itself.
Saletoga Fiafia a night of fun Visitors looking for some exciting live entertainment should mark down Wednesday at Saletoga Sands Resort in their travel diary. Each Wednesday the resort hosts their Fiafia Night – where guests and other visitors can enjoy traditional cultural entertainment from local performers. This includes song and dance routines, the spectacular fire dance, and a yummy buffet dinner. Don’t miss it!

Coconuts Beach Club's new luxury spa Coconuts Beach Club, Samoa, has a newly designed spa offering indulgent treatments in luxurious suites. Open to locals as well as resort guests, the spa’s services include manicures and pedicures, body scrubs, facials, couples’ massage and granite outdoor soaking tubs. The spa’s design reflects the tropical beauty of the resort, with colours that capture the serenity of the ocean. The spa is the final restoration project by owner Tautaimatapalapala and his close friend and architect Robert Ross. After surviving the damage of the tsunami of 2009 and the cyclone of 2012, Coconuts was redesigned and expanded by the pair. Coconuts Beach Club located on the beach in the village of Maninoa, is the only resort in Samoa that features over-the-water fales. The resort employs over 100 local Samoans from the surrounding villages, and offers a gourmet restaurant, lush grounds, beachfront access, and Samoan cultural celebrations.
Sinalei plants for a greener planet Sinalei Reef Resort and Spa have committed themselves to making the earth healthier and greener, by becoming involved in the Young Pacific Leaders’ (YPL) 2019 carbon offsetting drive. The initiative seeks to neutralise the CO2 gases emitted by the travel of all delegates who attended the YPL 2019 conference, raise the profile of environmental challenges affecting Samoa – and the world at large – and inspire support for the nation’s ambitious objective to plant two million trees by 2020. Sinalei Marketing and Business Development Manager, Nelson Annandale, said the resort sent a group of staff and guests to Vailima National Reserve to participate in the tree-planting drive. “In the past we’ve donated money to the drive to assist in buying trees,” he said. “This year we volunteered both staff and guests to help with the planting and I’m proud to say our group planted 200 trees.” Well done Sinalei, keep up the good work!

Feed the fish! There are so many cool things to see and do at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Lagoonarium, like walking straight off the beach into the Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve and feeding the fish by hand! Because these fish live in a protected reserve they know they’re safe so they don’t dart away. Instead, they love making new friends. The Rarotongan’s Aroa Lagoon is a very special spot – it’s right on the southwestern coast so receives all-day sun, it’s able to be used at alltides for free snorkelling, fish-feeding, kayaking, standup paddleboarding and swimming, and because it’s been a ra’ui (reserve) for nearly 20 years, it offers Rarotonga’s best snorkelling straight off The Rarotongan’s Aroa Beach. Aroa Lagoon has many colourful tropical fish with cool names like butterfly, squirrel, rabbit and angel. You can even go on The Rarotongan’s Night Snorkelling Tour and see “the night shift” in action – like the parrot fish in its cool “jelly sleeping cocoon!” For children aged to 11 years The Rarotongan offers a fun Cook Islands Nature & Culture Discovery Programme through their free Moko’s Kids Club which is open year-round, Monday to Saturday, from 9am-12 noon, 2-5pm and the all-important 7-9pm – giving parents space for quality time together in the evening. At The Rarotongan Kids Stay & Play free
(to age 11), and even teen families are catered for, with Teens Stay Free and the free Teen Zone for 12-16 years. Families can choose standard Beachside or Beachfront Rooms which all come with microwaves and a fridge, two-bedroom interconnecting family suites, three-bedroom private pool villas or self-catering two-bedroom or grand beachfront suites.

Cook Islands and Tahiti Explorer – Enjoy the best of both worlds Imagine waking up in the serene blue paradise of Aitutaki and then finishing the day watching a golden sunset in magical Moorea. It sounds almost too good to be true. But it isn’t. Because Air Rarotonga and Air Tahiti have joined forces with hotel and resort partners to create a selection of dreamy Cook Islands and Tahiti Explorer packages. Each package incorporates air and ground transfers, along with a choice of accommodation and tours. There are seven night packages for those on a tighter schedule, as well as nine night packages, and a selection of grand 12 night packages. The most premium of these options will have you staying in award winning resorts such as Pacific Resort, Aitutaki and sailing the crystal clear waters of Bora Bora in a luxury catamaran. It doesn’t get much better. And amongst all this you can soak up two different cultures, enjoy two styles of South Pacific cuisine and compare two of the most striking Pacific landscapes. The only difficulty will be deciding what package to choose.
The snorkelling specialists From high performance athlete to tourism entrepreneur. That’s the story so far for Josh Utanga, a young Kiwi born Cook Islander who competed at national and international levels in life saving as well as representing the Cook Islands in the 2012 Olympics for kayaking. Josh embraced his love of the water to create Snorkel Cook Islands – a company that specialises in small, private snorkelling tours that range from two person underwater adventures, up to group tours of just 12 people. He is the only operator on the island that is fully CITC accredited and who holds international life guarding qualifications. He offers visitors to the island unique snorkel encounters with local turtles and other marine life. His team are local watermen who know the reef and its many interesting and beautiful challenges. So safety is assured, as well as an amazing underwater experience.

Tamanu Beach Resort major improvements The resort introduced daily a-la-carte breakfast with barista coffee in April, along with 1GB of free WiFi per room per stay. Tamanu’s facilities have also now seen major improvements. All of the resort’s one-bedroom bungalows have new bathrooms complete with indoor and outdoor showers, following similar upgrades to its 12 other bungalows in 2017. The resort has continued to enhance the look and feel of the resort with island mahogany "Tamanu" bench-tops, local artwork and tropical décor. Announcing the changes General Manager Nicholas Henry, said the upgrades have given the bungalows and restaurant “a fresh contemporary feel that better reflects our Aitutaki island way of life”.
A Pursuit in Paradise Combine running and ultimate relaxation at the annual Aitutaki Marathon. The 2020 BSP Pursuit in Paradise will be held from 23-26 March next year. The 2020 event offers three courses on the stunning island paradise of Aitutaki with runners/walkers able to choose from a 10 kilometre, half or full marathon course. Over four days, the event includes a evening-before pasta dinner to get guests fuelled up for the race, transport to and from the race, ‘finish line’ drinks, a prizegiving with dinner and entertainment and a final fun run. Plus there’s the bonus of staying on an island with one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world to soak in. Turama Pacific Travel Group is offering five night event packages, including accommodation and domestic airfares. Go to www.turamapacific.com for details.
The Cook Islands to be fossil free by 2021 Welcome to Palm Grove, your private piece of paradise! Beachfront and garden bungalows Onsite restaurant and bar Personal wedding co-ordinator Rarotonga’s quiet southern coast PO Box 23, Rarotonga, Cook Islands p:+682 20002 e: beach@palmgrove.net www.palmgrove.net
In 2012 the Cook Islands became the largest marine sanctuary - now it is taking significant steps towards being Fossil Free by 2021 with 10 of the 12 islands having reached the goal. The remaining two - Aitutaki and Rarotonga - are working toward the 2021 goal. The islands have also turned their attention to waste management with the government set to install a glass crushing plant that will take glass out of the landfill and convert it into sand to be used in building fill, concrete and block making. Additionally a law is before Government to ban single use plastic bags on the island.
Turama Pacific Travel Group say no to plastic bottles Turama Pacific Travel Group will stop giving out water bottles this year, and instead give away aluminium drinking bottles to be filled in a treated drinking station on site. Turama is proud of its commitment to sustainability with 12 of its properties having achieved ‘Mana Tiaki’ accreditation, a certification scheme for properties who have adopted sustainable practices. This means they are using biodegradable cleaning options and fertilisers, minimising plastic usage, separating organic waste, using renewable energy and electric vehicles and providing options for other eco-friendly activities. Robert Skews, managing director of Turama says the Cook Islands is leading the way in environmental sustainability “The Cooks Islands is a beacon for the Pacific in its efforts to achieve a sustainable tourism sector and is well ahead of others in the region in taking steps to look after our planet.”
