Find your true love.

Think back to some of the most memorable weddings you’ve attended, and there is a good chance those vows were spoken in a special setting. For this reason, couples will put plenty of thought into where they’ll celebrate their big day. While a host of options will be tossed around, one thing is for sure: if a couple is seeking warm sun, glorious beaches, blue sea and a laid back vibe - the Pacific Islands are a great place to start looking. Inside our fourth annual edition of Pacific Romance, we work our way through some of the most magical locations across the Pacific - from under the radar islands like Niue and the Solomon Islands to the ‘rock star’ destinations like Fiji, Tahiti and Hawaii. We hope you’re inspired by their beauty, diversity and infinite romantic possibilities. But most importantly, we hope you’ll have more answers when you ask yourselves the big questions.

Travelling with your wedding dress Having travelled with dozens of wedding dresses from Australia or New Zealand to Fiji for various bridal photoshoots, Bula Bride owner Leanne Goff is more experienced with this than most. Here are her top tips when travelling with your wedding dress.

Tip 1: Take it carry on

This is not the time for your bag to go missing! Taking your dress with you every step of the way means you won’t be walking down the aisle in your best beach dress.

Tip 2: Consider your fabric

Lace and patterned fabrics travel better and don’t mind being rolled up, just simply unroll your dress immediately once you get to your resort and let it hang for a couple of days. Other fabrics such as satin or crepe get wrinkled easily and will need to be steamed just before they will be worn.

Tip 3: Use a steamer

Steamers are essential for dresses in fabrics that will wrinkle, and to avoid any chance of an accidental burn, we definitely do not recommend the use of an iron on your dress. Check with your resort in advance if they have a steamer, and if not, you really may want to consider taking one with you.

Tip 4: Pack your dress properly A) Using a carry on suitcase Firstly remove your gown from the hanger. Lay it on a flat surface like a bed, or carpeted floor. Fold the two sides of the skirt in at the fullest part of the skirt and then loosely roll the dress from bottom to top. Place the rolled dress in a large dry cleaning bag. Pack it in a hard case so that other carry on bags don’t crush yours. Label your carry on with your details and the details of the resort you’re travelling to. Keep your dress packed on its own to keep it away from toiletries, shoes and anything else that could crush or stain your dress. B) Using a garment bag Most wedding dress stores will provide a full length garment bag when you take your dress home. When travelling, you may need to have this folded up rather than full length. To do this in a way to reduce wrinkles, hang the gown facing you with the top half inside the bag, and take the dress’ bottom left and right sides and fold them into the centre in a trifold. Keep the two sides of the skirt folded and roll the train from the bottom until it is short enough to place in the bottom of the bag. If you’re careful about how you fold and roll the train, there will be a lot less wrinkling and touch-up pressing needed upon arrival. Typically you can store it in the overhead bin. Make sure nothing heavy gets put on top of your dress in the bin or it’ll get wrinkled. Alternatively have a chat to the cabin crew, who may have a cupboard that your dress can be hung on for the journey.

MALOLO ISLAND RESORT

SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF THIS Think romantic fairytale. Think secluded island, palm trees swaying and white sand beach. With this vision firmly in mind, it’s no wonder Fiji draws so many couples in search of a special setting for their wedding, honeymoon or romantic reconnection. The hard part about picking Fiji as your romantic destination is deciding exactly where in the islands you should go! With this in mind, we’ve divided the major visitor regions into separate sections, starting with the glorious islands of The Mamanuca Group and finishing at off-the-beaten-track locations for couples that prefer to fly under the radar!

THE MAMANUCAS When Fiji’s tourism industry took its first steps in the early 1960s, the islands in the Mamanuca Group were among the first locations to be developed. Nearly sixty years on, this stunning group of islands remain a jewel in Fiji’s travel crown. They also remain one of Fiji’s favourite “goto” spots for weddings, honeymoons and romantic getaways. Their sheer beauty provides an undeniable allure. Small green dots, scattered across the bluest of ocean. White sand beaches, palm

Pacific Romance

trees swaying in the wind. It’s your classic picture postcard, and quite honestly, it’s about as romantic as you could wish for. These islands also have a way of making you relax. Indeed couples soon sink into this laid-back island vibe. Any pre-wedding stress will float away in the tropical breeze, and if you’ve come to honeymoon, any post-wedding fatigue will quickly evaporate too! Getting out to these beautiful islands is simple. South Sea Cruises have a comprehensive schedule of ferries running each day from Port Denarau. If you’d like to make the island transfer extra special, you can take the aerial route by jumping on-board a seaplane or helicopter. The cost is higher than a ferry option, but for a one-off occasion, it’s brilliant. You’ll land at your resort in about 15 minutes, plus you’ll have a whole new appreciation of the marine environment below. While chilling out is head of the agenda for most, all resorts will provide guests with a wide variety of activities. Watersports are always on the menu, with non-motorised equipment (kayaks, paddleboards, snorkelling gear etc.) free of charge to use. Some resorts might even have small catamarans and windsurfers to cruise around on. Many resorts operate diving operations offering everything from introductory courses right through to advanced dives for the scuba pros. Fishing is popular – and an excellent way for a groom and his mates to get away together. And the Mamanucas are also home to some of the best surf breaks in the world. In most cases, the local resorts can organise boat transfers out to the reef.

TOKORIKI ISLAND RESORT

Tokoriki Island Resort Romance is always in the air at Tokoriki Island Resort. Whether couples are here for their honeymoon, renewal of vows, anniversary, marriage, elopement or to pop the question, the resort provides everything you need – and it does so with a personal touch. Here, you’ll be on firstname terms with everyone! If you are tying the knot, you can go barefoot on the beach, traditional in a chapel, or even say your vows from the deck of your Beachfront Pool Villa. Choose from a range of wedding and elopement packages to make your day unforgettably special – as it should be! Why not stay on for your honeymoon? Couples love coming here for the beautiful beachfront scenery, privacy, intimate vibe and exceptional service.

Castaway Island Resort Lose yourself in love at Castaway Island Resort, a 174-acre nirvana covered in lush tropical rainforest, and surrounded by white sand beaches and a colourful reef. If you feel a sense of history on arrival, well, that’s because it was developed in 1966 – the very first resort in the Mamanuca Islands. While the 2020 version provides a thoroughly modern Fiji experience, the original ‘island time’ allure has stood the test of time. And couples will do the same when they visit Castaway, through marriage, a honeymoon, or simply spending quality time together. Whatever you are visiting for, the resort staff will help make your time unforgettable.

YASAWA ISLANDS To the north of the Mamanuca Group you’ll find the remote, but equally beautiful Yasawa Islands. In the Yasawas, land-based tourism didn’t kick off until 1987. For many visitors, this late development has been a blessing, as it’s helped the islands maintain a genuine authenticity and an atmosphere of pure escape. If your idea of romance involves getting away from the mainstream, this is a place to do it. In the Yasawas, local people still lead a very simple life in small remote villages, adhering to traditional customs and doing what they have done for generations. There are no roads, no shops and no banks. Life is very much based around the rich bounty that Mother Nature has provided. And as a visitor, you can immerse yourself in this serene simplicity too. In many cases, a majority of the region’s resort staff will come from a local village. This close connection translates into a sense of ownership and a real pride in that standard of service. Essentially, the staff are welcoming you into their home, and you can feel the difference. Although the Yasawa Islands are a little further from the mainland than their Mamanuca neighbours, the transfer from Port Denarau is straightforward. If you decide to come by boat, your romantic adventure will begin before you’ve arrived at your destination. The Yasawa Flyer makes its way to the Yasawas once a day and cruising into these picturesque islands will set the scene for what is to come – beauty and more beauty! If your budget can stretch, there is always the option of flying by either seaplane or helicopter. In both cases, the flight time is around 15-20 minutes, depending on the resort you are flying to.

YASAWA ISLAND

GO FOR GOLD! If you’re coming to Fiji for romance, your celebration will surely include liquid refreshments! If that’s the case, the friendly folk from Victoria Wines (Port Denarau, Nadi and Suva) are the people to see. Victoria Wines is Fiji’s only dedicated wine importer and distributor, offering an extensive selection of wines from Europe, South America, United States, Australia and New Zealand. Along with a long list of beers, cider, spirits and liqueurs. One of their wedding favourites is the piccolo sized (200mL) Gold Prosecco from Bottega which comes beautifully presented in a gold bottle. They make classy ‘wedding favours’ and Victoria Wines can personalise them with ribbons and name cards for table settings, hen’s parties, beach settings or wherever else you like to add an elegant touch. Plus they’ll tie on an eco-friendly paper straw too. Now that’s service!

MANTA RAY MAGIC The Yasawa Islands are home to “Manta Ray Channel” – a nutrient-rich stretch of water that attracts manta rays between May and October each year. Several resorts run guided tours. Spotters will keep a look for the manta rays, and with the safety briefing done, guides will dive into the clear blue waters, and lead you in the right direction. In a word, the experience is magical. These gentle giants are driven along by wide fins that look more like wings. Being in the water as they slowly “fly” over, under and around you is an experience you’ll never forget.

SAWA-I-LAU CAVES The breathtaking Sawa-I-Lau Caves are a Yawasa must-do for couples. These limestone formations have been slowly carved out over thousands of years of wave action and are hidden away inside a little island. When you’re swimming in the water looking up as the sun rays peek through, the feeling is very cathedrallike – it’s a view few visitors will forget. Several resorts offer this guided tour. Hollywood producers considered these caves the perfect spot to film Brooke Shield’s famous rock scene in the 1980s romantic film, The Blue Lagoon, just as you will deem the Yasawas the perfect place for your romantic holiday.

F iji romance made easy.

For the couple seeking luxury, comfort and the ease of a prime beachfront location just 15 minutes from Nadi Airport, Ramada Suites by Wyndham, Wailoaloa Beach will fit the brief perfectly. The spacious self-catering suites all come with expansive views across the calm waters of Nadi Bay. Couples will also enjoy a full range of quality facilities – including a world-class spa and a magnificent rooftop restaurant.

DENARAU ISLAND If you’re thinking Fiji romance, the resort enclave on Denarau Island has everything you could ask for. And it comes with the added convenience of being an easy 20 minute drive from Nadi International Airport. With so many resorts sitting side-by-side, there is always a buzz of people, so if you like busy, and lots going on, this is the place to be. The side-by-side layout also means you can sample the numerous dining and bar options from any of the other resorts – it’s just a matter of going for a stroll or doing the rounds on the open-air Bula Bus which is always fun. Sure, you won’t experience the same sense of adventure or classic white sands you’ll get on an outer island, but that’s not the point. Couples love Denarau because it’s so vibrant. Couples also enjoy easy access to the lively hub of Port Denarau. (It’s just five minutes away from the resorts). There are plenty of dining options – Lulus, Rhum-Ba, Hard Rock Café, Cardos, Amalfi Italian, to name just a few. For the ladies, you can get your nails and hair done, or have a massage or treatment at one of the day spas. There are shops too, including duty-free like the famous Jacks of Fiji.

HILTON FIJI BEACH RESORT & SPA

And of course, Port Denarau is the hub for all-day trips and transfers to the islands. This makes it easy to take an island day trip – always an excellent option for a post-wedding get-together.

PLACES TO STAY Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa Ideally located oceanfront on Denarau Island, Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa provides couples with a relaxing retreat. You will want to spend countless hours at the stunning beachfront pool, surrounded by palms, sun, sand and sea. The rooms are stylish and spacious, each offering romantic views from a private terrace or balcony. And the dining experience is truly unforgettable; indulging in fresh, local seafood as the wine glass and ocean shimmers with the glow of the setting sun.

Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa

SOFITEL FIJI RESORT & SPA

French romance and Fijian beauty blend seamlessly at Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa. Do you dream of an intimate wedding or a massive celebration (up to 400 people)? However, the charming beachside chapel is a favourite. There are plenty of wedding packages and a seemingly endless list of options so that you can create a unique, romantic experience.

Sheraton Fiji Resort One of the most romantic places to get hitched on Denarau Island has to be Sheraton Fiji Resort’s beachside chapel. Couples can’t go wrong with its stunning interior and windows, like framed canvases, painting gorgeous ocean views. If you get married at sunset, orange light will pour through and fill the room like red wine. It’s intoxicating. There are plenty of other wedding options to tickle your fancy. You can have a relaxed wedding on the beach, barefoot and all. Or go classic suit and tie formal and get married in the ballroom. THE CORAL COAST Some resorts provide such a wide range of eating and entertainment options, it’s easy for romance travellers to arrive and then stay within the resort grounds until it’s time to go back home! On Fiji’s Coral Coast, an hour and a half south of Nadi, numerous properties fit this description – such as the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, The Warwick Fiji, Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort and Spa and the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa. Each one is well-versed in the art of planning weddings and providing the all-important honeymoon. But as a region, the Coral Coast has so much more to offer couples, wedding parties and honeymooners. The Sigatoka Sand Dunes, Sigatoka River Safari and Tavuni Hill Fort are Coral Coast highlights. And visitors also have the chance to soak up the real Fiji at any number of villages along this 80 kilometre stretch of coast. If a couple were to choose one town to visit it’s Sigatoka Town. The bustling centre is always full of activity, and it’s fun browsing the shops and food stalls alongside the friendly locals. Sigatoka also hosts Fiji’s premier domestic rugby sevens tournament the Coral Coast Sevens. The athletic talent on show is quite astounding, and even if you’re not sports fans, it’s hard not to get caught up in the lively atmosphere as the local crowd cheer on their favourite team.

PLAY A ROUND Looking for the perfect pre or post-wedding activity? A groom and his mates can drop into Natadola Bay Golf Course and play 18 holes on this highly acclaimed par 72 championship golf course. The course snakes its way through rolling hills and along a picturepostcard coastline and its Pacific blue backdrop. The course has excellent facilities to match with a Pacific inspired clubhouse, bar, a pro-shop that has everything you’ll need for a round and a driving range to get some practice on before you start!

INTERCONTINENTAL FIJI GOLF RESORT & SPA

PLACES TO STAY Crusoe’s Retreat Transformed into an adults-only (18+ years) resort in 2019, Crusoe’s Retreat is the kind of place where couples will find romantic bliss at an easygoing pace. The resort is home to just 28 bures, all sitting on a secluded, palm-fringed sandy beach – peace and tranquillity is guaranteed. The only sound you’ll hear is the palm trees gently swaying in the breeze! Wedding couples can choose to exchange their vows from several beautiful settings around the resort – barefoot on the beach, hidden garden or in front of the magnificent hills (which offer stunning panoramic views of the reef and turquoise lagoon). Honeymooners are also in for a treat, enjoying simple romantic touches, from candlelit dinners on the beach through to couple’s massages, jungle tours or afternoon picnics.

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa is located on Natadola Beach, considered by many to be the finest stretch of sand on the Fiji mainland. Needless to say, couples will want to spend hours swimming in its glassy waters and lazing under the palms that line the shoreline. There’s even a small surf break directly in front of the resort. The resort itself is modelled off traditional Fijian villages, where ‘chiefs’ command an elevated position overlooking the rest of the village. You’d hardly describe the luxurious facilities and accommodation on

the ‘lower’ beach level as common, however, Club InterContinental ‘up top’ does offer discerning couples extra privacy, privileges and a jawdropping view of the bay. Club InterContinental offers 50 rooms, including the Natadola Suite, a 218 square metre, two-bedroom haven that comes with a private pool, tropical courtyard and a spacious outdoor entertainment area.

Fiji Hideaway Resort & Spa Aptly named, Fiji Hideaway Resort & Spa is the perfect place for couples to sneak away to from the stresses of modern life. This Coral Coast resort goes above and beyond crafting dream weddings for couples in love. Get married in a dedicated wedding bure for an authentic Fijian experience and pick from a variety of carefully designed wedding packages. It’s an excellent spot for family and friends to join you in celebration.

Yatule Resort & Spa Sitting a few hundred metres along the beach from the InterContinental Fiji, Yatule Resort and Spa is a mellow 36-bure property that promises a relaxed, intimate experience. With Natadola Beach on your doorstep, you have the freedom to simply marvel in its beauty or dive right in. And the soft, paper-white sand, with a golden sunset shimmering off the ocean, makes for a dream wedding ceremony backdrop. The Yatule staff are well-versed in wedding coordination, and they’ll take care of every detail to make the day special. Add in elegant surroundings, delicious cuisine and a host of entertainment, and what you have is the perfect recipe for romance.

CRUSOE’S RETREAT If your romantic brief includes ‘the real Fiji’, Crusoe’s Retreat could well be the place you’re looking for! Couples will immediately enjoy the peace and quiet. The resort’s adultsonly policy ensures there will be no interruptions from noisy children when it comes time to tie the knot. The resident wedding experts also take the stress out of wedding planning, allowing couples to celebrate their love in true Fijian style – think soft ukulele strumming, floral headpieces, fire dancing and delicious lovo meals. Plus, Coco’s Day Spa is in full swing too! Located right on the beach (with soft flowing drapes for privacy and a team of experienced therapists), the spa offers beautiful couple’s massages and speciality beauty treatments. It’s the perfect treat to indulge in before or after the big day. Crusoe’s Retreat is Fiji’s very first resort and shares close ties with the local village, which means guests feel part of the local community. Tucked away in its own private paradise (about 45 minutes’ drive past the town of Sigatoka) this resort is a real toes-in-the-sand escape. It’s 100% stressfree, laid-back and authentic. Once the wedding is done, Crusoe’s is a great place to stay on for the honeymoon, too. The resort’s rustic beach bures are a beautiful place to call home after days spent exploring the island’s sun-drenched shores, scuba diving, snorkelling or reading under palm trees with your loved one. On top of all that, Crusoe’s has a partnership with Fiji Airways underway, so couples will soon be able to book their flights and accommodation at the same time.

The Cake Makers

Meet Lee and Louise Acreman Taste Fiji How long has Taste Fiji been making cakes? Lee Acreman, head chef, owner and operator of Taste Fiji has been making cakes since 2009, when he first started the business from his home in Nadi. He had a passion for showcasing local ingredients rather than “pre mixes” and he’s kept that philosophy, utilising in-season local ingredients. For example, they use delicious Adi Chocolate made from cocoa beans grown in Savusavu (the northern island of Vanua Levu).

Lee, Louise and family

There are so many cake options. How would you advise a couple to narrow down their choice? Let your imagination run wild! Essentially we can create any cake that a couple desire. We prefer it that way to be honest! We understand that sometimes people just choose from our brochure, as that design ticks all their boxes. However, we enjoy custom designing cakes that tell a story about a couple. One bride had a ‘dream’ and drew an image of her and her husband as figurines, sitting on the edge of the second tier of the cake with sand around them and waves coming up from the first tier. We created her cake as per her drawing and they just adored it.

What are your most popular wedding cakes? Trends come and go, but we’ve probably done more ruffle cakes than any other. Favourite flavours are passionfruit (or mango in season), white chocolate, and our chocolate and coconut (gluten free) option.

What are some of your most unusual requests? A 5-tier black wedding cake with neon splashes that glowed in the dark! A dinosaur with laser eyes burning into a cloud “We were married on Cloud 9”. A Lego cake with mini Lego chefs.

Can you cater to specific dietary requirements? Most definitely. We don’t use pre mixes at all, so we can make a cake gluten free, eggless, vegan, nut free etc.

How do you create a cake with X-factor? We feel that a cake should taste as good as it looks. Unless there are dietary requirements our cakes are made using free range eggs, butter (not margarine), and real chocolate. The cakes are also made fresh – as close to the wedding as possible. Because we customise most cakes, couples know their cake is one-of-a-kind – there isn’t anything more X factor than knowing that!

Are there any other factors that a couple need to consider? If you want multiple flavours, keep in mind that you have different ‘tastes’ to consider in your guests. Placement of the cake table in floor plans is important too. Keep out of direct sunlight or wind and also dancing/high traffic areas. Plus the surface needs to be level, i.e. cake tables in sand. Sand and any icing do not mix well! And if the table is wonky, the cake will be wonky.

Is the tropical heat a factor? Always. We take the heat and humidity into account through every stage – icing, flowers details, storage before delivery, delivery handling, storage until set up and presentation and also where it is to be placed.

What is the price range of your cakes? Our ‘brochure’ cakes start at FJD$100 for a standard white iced 4” with fresh flowers, and go all the way up to $1200 for a three tier creation.

How do couples enlist your services? We work closely with resorts and wedding planners like Bula Bride, but couples usually contact us direct – through our website, Facebook or Instagram.

REAL LIFE

WEDDINGS

Alex Pollard and Lauren Stone Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa

What inspired you to have a Pacific Island wedding? I’d travelled to Fiji many times and it has always been a special place to be with my family. Two of my cousins have been married in Fiji before and their weddings were amazing. When my husband asked me to marry him, I suggested Fiji as a location and he loved the sound of it!

What made you pick this specific resort? I found it hard to choose a venue, so I spoke to Mandi from Viva Destination Weddings. With her help I was able to narrow down the venue to the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa. I decided on this resort because it was accessible for my guests, they have a number of venues to choose from for ceremony and reception; and my guests didn’t have to stay at the resort if they attended my wedding. They had the option to stay at other resorts.

Did you use a wedding planner? Yes, Mandi from Viva Destination Weddings. It was so great having her to speak to. She could offer advice using her years of experience planning weddings in Fiji. She has worked with the resorts in Fiji and the vendors many times before, which gave me peace of mind. When I was worried about how things would be, she calmed me down and told me everything would be perfect – which it was!

What was involved in researching and organising your wedding? There was quite a bit of research in the beginning but once I started using Mandi’s service at Viva Destination Weddings everything was a lot easier. With her list of recommended vendors I was able to narrow down which vendors I wanted to use. I also researched a lot using Facebook groups and Bula Bride website.

What’s your advice for a bride planning a Fiji wedding? My advice would be to trust the people and trust the process. They really know what they’re doing. My wedding went perfectly. I wish I hadn’t stressed so much in the lead up. I would also suggest using a wedding destination expert like Mandi. It doesn’t cost anything extra and the advice is invaluable. They were on top of everything.

What was the highlight of your day? There were so many! Walking down the aisle to my husband was a very special moment. My daughter was ahead of me, and ran to him when she saw him. He was crying, I was crying everyone was crying. The whole ceremony was so emotional and beautiful! PHOTOGRAPHY ©NADI BAY PHOTOGRAPHY

THE

INSIDE WORD

Making dreams come true Meet Gloria Osborne, Wedding Planner Musket Cove Island Resort and Marina How long have you had this role? I had this role for 21 years!

How many weddings do you organise each month? Weddings tend to be seasonal. But to ensure each wedding is special we restrict the number of weddings on any given week. Five or six is ideal.

What are some of the unique things you can offer? Something unique that we offer, are choices, bundled together in a relaxed Fiji island experience. Because of who we are, and our location, bridal couples have so many choices. Choice of pre and post ceremony, choice of reception, choice of dining, menus and activities. We have introduced several theme choices too – Tropical Garden, Beach, Fiji Banquet or Classic.

What are the main benefits of getting married at your resort? A stress-free experience, so the bride and groom can enjoy their day as much as their friends and family. Value for money is crucial – at Musket we have no hidden charges.

What do you enjoy most about your job? Fulfilling dreams and being a part of the beginning of a couple’s life together. Putting smiles on people’s faces is very rewarding.

What are the top three things a planner needs to find out from a couple? 1. Their expectations are key. 2. Who are the main contacts and who is the final decision maker. 3. The number of guests.

What are some of ways you can personalise a wedding? Every wedding is personalised. We offer a range of accessories, locations, décor and theme colours, bespoke menus and entertainment. The list is endless. It really comes down to their desire and budget.

What’s the best advice you would give a couple? Don’t be persuaded or pressured by others. You know whose opinion you trust, stick to them. You are choosing a tropical destination for your wedding. Keep everything relaxed and casual.

What’s your key tip to avoiding wedding day stress? Champagne. Make sure you have a clear head the afternoon before the event. Then on the day leave everything to the professionals.

Do you have any memorable or unique wedding stories you can share? We always know the phrase “its all about the bride” but this wedding, the bride wanted to surprise the groom who was a Bond fan. He did a special entrance in a speedboat and we had the James Bond theme song on. The groom was so happy that he was in tears and never thought his bride would organise something special for him that he will treasure for rest of his life. Even when they checked out the groom kept talking about it with his wedding guests.

PHOTOGRAPHERS

SNAPSHOT

Capturing the moment Leezett Birch-Majstorovic

How long have you been a wedding photographer? I shot my first wedding in 2010, so 10 years. We shoot weddings in Fiji and we also shoot weddings in New Zealand during summer and autumn.

What made you decide to specialise in wedding photography? I just wanted to be a photographer and I touched base with a friend who gave me a day of one-on-one mentoring. Shortly after this my sister’s friend was getting married and asked if I could shoot her wedding day. It was my first wedding shoot and I was hooked!

Leezet t and family

What are the key questions a couple should ask their photographer? Before they ask any questions, couples need to fall in love with a photographer’s style of work. Do not hire a photographer unless you are 100% in love with the work they create! Also make sure they regularly shoot weddings. Weddings require specialist skills and not every photographer can cope with the pressures of the day. Once you find the photographer you love, the only question needed is are they available. They will do what they do best to create the same level of beautiful art on your wedding day.

Can you provide any tips to help them prepare for the shoot? Be yourselves, don’t worry about what your best side or best angle is, go in with an attitude to have fun, and trust the photographer to guide you in that moment when it’s needed.

How do you get everyone to relax for the candid shots? If time permits, we encourage bridal couples to hang out with their bridal party with a few drinks to help them relax and get into a fun, chilled spirit.

What is your typical turnaround time? 4–8 weeks depending on whether it’s peak season or not.

Anything else you would like to add? Consider a wedding album. With so much social media, it’s easy to upload images and share, but there is nothing quite like the story of your day displayed in a beautiful quality album that will last a lifetime. Talk to your photographer about one!!

BORA BORA ©TAHITI TOURISM

If any Pacific destination has built its reputation on the promise of romance, it is the islands of Tahiti. World-class resorts float above the clearest of lagoon waters. Dramatic volcanic peaks frame picture-postcard vistas. A vibrant French-Pacific culture adds a sophisticated European allure. There is a multitude of outdoor activities a couple can enjoy. And from there, the list of romantic reasons to visit Tahiti goes on and on.

TAHITI If you haven’t been to Tahiti, your mental image might come courtesy of a glossy magazine or a travel programme you’ve seen on TV. Regardless, nothing will prepare you for the unmatched blend of peaks, lagoons, luxury accommodation and friendly local hospitality you are about to immerse yourself in. Indeed, Tahiti and its islands have to be seen to be believed. The glamour locations of Bora Bora and Moorea will be on most romantic itineraries, but first stop for all international travellers is Papeete, the energetic capital city on the island of Tahiti. Some consider this a stopover point ‘on the way through’, but the island of Tahiti has plenty to offer couples. To find out a little more about the island, take a trip by car or local transport to the village of Puna’auia to the Museum de Tahiti et des Iles. The museum is dedicated to conserving the archaeology and history of Tahiti. You can also learn about the French Polynesian environment,

42

history, culture and social life. And then finish off with a stroll around the Atea Gardens. The Papeete Market (Marche de Papeete) is another sight to pencil into your itinerary. Here you’ll have the chance to pick up local handicrafts, like sarongs, shell jewellery and woven knick-knacks. Buy a couple of pareu each to wrap around yourselves like a sarong. And if you’re peckish, you can snack on a selection of traditional Tahitian cuisine. Speaking of food, every couple should head to Place Vaiete down on Papeete’s waterfront for some superb casual dining from the popular roulottes (caravans and food trucks). Tuck into a plate of marinated raw fish, known as poisson cru. Try fresh red tuna, caught daily, along with galettes, Asian food, steak and pizza. Drink fresh coconut milk sucked through a straw, or a cold can of the local Hinano beer. Ladies note, you may want to take your partner to the Robert Wan Pearl Museum. Here you will learn about the mystique of the pearl. How they are grown and harvested, and the incredible array of colours, from purest white to Tahiti’s renowned black pearls. Throw in a few hints and you might be taking one home with you!

MOOREA From the western side of Tahiti, you can see the soaring peaks of Moorea in what seems like touching distance. Indeed, this magical island is a mere 30 kilometres away – which translates to an easy 3040 minute ferry ride from the downtown terminal in Papeete. Moorea is a paradise for romantics. With its mountains, aqua lagoons, white sandy beaches, lush green gardens and magnificent bays, Moorea has a dramatic landscape on a scale that few South Pacific islands can match. As the ferry nears the island and those jagged peaks begin to tower above you, the sense of anticipation will grow. As soon as you step foot on the island, you will instantly feel the change of pace. Moorea is home to around 18,000 people, whereas Tahiti has around 10 times that number. The vibe is blissfully laid back. The best way for a couple to start exploring the island is by car. The major rental car brands have their offices directly opposite the ferry terminal, so you can walk across the street and pick up a vehicle in a jiffy. There is one main coastal road, so it’s impossible to get lost! And when you feel the need, simply pull over at a local village and browse the shops, or grab a bite to eat. There are lots of roadside Cafés offering yummy snacks – crepes are a speciality, they’re tasty and light, so you don’t feel too ‘full’ afterwards. For a special occasion book a table at the Moorea Beach Café, run by the relaxed Bruno Jamais, who spent years working in hospitality in New York before seeking a more relaxing lifestyle. The café sits right on the water and it’s the kind of place you can settle in for hours, grazing away, sipping on bubbles and gazing across the calm blue

waters. It’s easy to find – look out for the café’s yellow flags in the town of Maharepa. There’s a lot to see inland too. Like on a tour with Moorea ATV. Their all-terrain vehicles seat two, so couples can share the driving. A guide will lead your squad down unsealed back-country roads through tropical jungle, across gurgling river fords, and up to panoramic lookouts. You might pause in pineapple plantations and taste some local products. You will certainly get dusty, and muddy too, if there’s been recent rain, but you can swim and refresh in the pool below one of Moorea’s sparkling waterfalls. Also make time to experience Tiki Parc, where you can hook into a harness and swing across multiple aerial, obstacle courses and zip lines graded according to how brave you think you both are. Then round the headland to Cooks Bay, or Temae, where you can have a picnic under the palm trees. Alternatively, you may want to try a ubiquitous Tahiti Drink from the Rotui juice factory, a form of fruit punch with a generous serving of rum, sold in cartons. It goes without saying the water-loving couples will be in their element. Motorboats, jet skis, paddleboards and kayaks are all available for hire, along with fishing and diving charters and lagoon excursions. Moorea is also home to several beautiful public beach reserves – places where local families get-together to swim and picnic. Check out the palm-tree lined Taahiamanu Beach, one of the most popular on the island. It’s an excellent spot for a cooling dip during the day, or catch the glorious sunset later in the early evening. It’s a few minutes past the Hilton Moorea Resort and Spa.

BORA BORA Bora Bora is a destination that should be on everyone’s bucket list. Known as the Pearl of the Pacific, its turquoise lagoon, low-lying motu (small islets), dazzling white sands and dominant volcano make the island a romantic dream. If you’re after the classic over-water bungalow experience, this is your nirvana! What could be more romantic than diving off your private swimming platform into the warm, crystal clear waters and then lazing on a sun-drenched deck that looks back toward Mt Otemanu. And of course, you’ll be waited on hand-and-foot by some of the South Pacific’s best-trained staff. It doesn’t get much better. In fact, there’s only one issue with picking Bora Bora as a place to get married or honeymoon - you’ll be spoiled forever. Bora Bora is that island somewhere over the rainbow – well, actually it lies northwest of the island of Tahiti, and just under an hour away by plane. Indeed, your love affair with Bora Bora will begin as soon as the island comes into view through your plane window. The airport is located on a small motu, and you won’t have to wait long to experience the exquisite lagoon. Instead of a courtesy coach, a water taxi will take you to your resort.

48

Pacific Romance

There are several ways to explore Bora Bora lagoon. Relax with some snorkelling, swim from a motu or on renowned Matira Beach, or take in the sights, as you circle the island on your own jetski. The Aquarium Bora Bora diving site is particularly suitable for beginners. You’ll love the dense schools of brightly coloured fish, along with moray eels and stingrays, and majestic coral formations. You can go on a whale watching experience beyond the reef if your honeymoon is between mid-August and the end of October. If the weather and the sea state are favourable, you can even swim with them. The island itself is easy to explore, with four-wheel-drive vehicles climbing high into the hills for great views. Stop off at local villages and fossick for handicrafts and works of art. You may wish to see the sunset back at your resort over cocktails, but a sunset cruise on a catamaran is a great alternative. Or take a stargazing tour, and as night falls, your guide will point out how his ancestors used them to navigate their way across vast stretches of open ocean. Bora Bora’s resorts are known for their cuisine, and lots of Cafés and bistros provide a satisfying meal. But for some local flavour, have dinner at the legendary Bloody Mary’s and savour its relaxed ambience. The catch of the day will be prepared as you like it, and there is crab, shrimp, steak and other options. It’s closed during the weekend and during January.

PLACES TO STAY

OVERWATER INVENTION

Conrad Bora Bora Nui

The simple, yet brilliant idea of creating an over-water experience began 50 years ago when three American men took Tahiti’s traditional Polynesian grass huts and set them on concrete stilts on the water. The first three were built at the Bali Hai Hotel on Raiatea, and they quickly built more on Moorea and Bora Bora. Other hoteliers in French Polynesia soon saw their attraction, and Tahiti is now renowned for its hundreds of overwater bungalows or villas, which have evolved from simple huts to palatial suites, with all the amenities of a top-class hotel.

Conrad Bora Bora Nui provides couples with a blissful mix. Pure luxury, relaxation and unparalleled views. The private island location on Motu To’opua is like something out of movie set. Couples can find a secluded spot along the long white sand beaches. There is a range of accommodations on both land and overwater. From the spacious Garden View Villas with a pool to extravagant Presidential Villas. It really comes down to what you prefer and how much your budget can stretch. Romantic dining? The resort has six restaurants and bars to suit every taste. And if you think a stay here is just about lazing by the pool – think again. For active couples, there are endless adventures on offer. From hiking to swimming with sharks, a couple can stay as busy as they choose. For a unique experience, spend a day at the resort’s private islet Motu Tapu, enjoy a picnic prepared by their chefs, sip on Champagne, and soak up the surroundings. Hina Spa, located on the hilltop, offers the full range of pampering treatments.

Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora The Four Seasons brand is known the world over for its luxury hotels and their Bora Bora property continues this first-class tradition. Numerous A-list Hollywood stars have relaxed in these opulent surroundings – the majestic waters, views to Mt Otemanu and impeccable service are all part of the attraction.

FOUR SEASONS RESORT BORA BORA

It’s difficult to imagine a more romantic setting. Honeymooners can lap up every moment, enjoying the exceptional dining options and world-class spa treatments. And for those tying the knot, there’s the enchanting Aherenoa Chapel with its jaw-dropping views directly across to Mt Otemanu. It’s doesn’t get much better.

Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach Resort Sitting on the eastern side of the main island, Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach Resort offers guests a different experience from the resorts located on the smaller surrounding motu (islets). You’ll still enjoy the same stunning garden setting, pure white sand beach and classic overwater experience, but you’ll also have easy access to a host of Bora Bora’s local attractions, including the town of Vaitape and the famous Bloody Mary’s restaurant. When it comes to weddings, the resort’s motto is “your wedding as per your wishes”. Essentially couples “work” hand-in-hand with Sofitel’s wedding coordinator to create a wedding that reflects their personal passions – and then it is all brought to life in this stunning Bora Bora location.

REAL LIFE

WEDDINGS

Keane and Chiara Keane (Keeys) Moorea

What inspired you to have a South Pacific island wedding? We really dreamt of having a simple, island wedding with either just us or a few family members, somewhere with a slower pace of life where we could really relax and spend some quality time together. We also love to surf and spend time on the water.

What made you pick that specific island ahead of all the others? French Polynesia has always been a dream destination for us, so when we were looking into islands and found that Moorea was insanely beautiful, had great surf and also holiday houses and vendors that would fit our vision for our wedding, we were pretty excited.

What made you pick that specific resort or other wedding venue? We wanted to have a beachfront wedding but to keep it ‘backyard’ style with the ceremony and reception held at the same venue and when we found Fare Manahau, it ticked our boxes of having an open beachfront yard with the stunning reef out front and the magical mountains and palm groves out the back. There were also the logistics of having enough space for the dinner tables and beds for our family to stay.

What were some of the advantages of getting married in the islands? Having a really stunning and unique location, being able to combine the wedding trip with your honeymoon and keeping the guest list intimate.

If you had a friend planning an island wedding, what would your Top 5 tips be? 1. Keep the guest list small and have the people who really matter to you there. 2. Find a venue or vendor that offers multiple services like food, drinks, decorations to simplify your planning.

50

Pacific Romance

3. Ask vendors if they will travel – many photographers, hair and makeup artists, etc. will travel for you if your destination is on their bucket list. 4. Use a wedding website to give your guests travel info so that you’re not relaying the same messages to everyone. 5. Plan, plan, plan but once you are there, be in the moment and don’t sweat the small stuff.

Looking back, was there anything you would do differently? I would probably make sure we had more time away after the wedding to really decompress and relax!

THE

INSIDE WORD

Planning to perfection Lise Morel, Events Coordinator Hilton Moorea Resort and Spa How long have you had this role? I joined Hilton Moorea in 2017. I was a concierge, and then I moved into the food & beverage team. These roles gave me a great understanding of our guests’ needs before I started as Events Coordinator in September 2018.

What lead-time do you require to plan a wedding? It is possible to arrange ‘last-minute’ weddings at Hilton Moorea, but the sooner we start planning, the better!

How many weddings do you arrange each month? We arrange around 5-10 Polynesian ceremonies per month.

What are some of the unique things you can offer? Having an Event Coordinator on-property means we can tailor everything, so each wedding is unique! Our location between Moorea’s two biggest bays is also a major attraction. Our private white sand beach offers beautiful views at sunset – there are opportunities for barefoot beach cocktail parties, ‘feet in the sand’ dinners to the sound of ukulele, etc.

What are the main benefits of getting married in Moorea? Easy! The main benefit is not needing to fly to your honeymoon destination – you’ve already made it there!

What do you enjoy most about your job? The appreciation of our guests – I know I’ve helped create an occasion they’ll remember forever!

What are the Top 3 things a planner needs to find out from a couple? 1. What the non-negotiables are. We need to find out what elements a bride and groom absolutely must-have! 2. To build a trusted relationship. Because we are clear with couples, we avoid any misunderstandings. 3. What to prioritise. For example: are they more concerned about the food or interested in decor? The answer will allow us to find out what details we need to concentrate on in the planning process.

Best advice you would give a couple? Don’t stress too much while planning. I know, easy to say! During the celebrations, take a few minutes to pause and look around as your guests are enjoying the moment.

What is the best time of the year to get married in Moorea? To me, the best time of the year is a day that means something for the bride and groom. I do not believe there is a time of the year better than another – even if it is recommended to travel to French Polynesia from March to October. Indeed, from November to March, the weather may be slightly rainier but still warm and with longer days!

Tying the knot

Getting married in Vanuatu is a straightforward process. However, it’s a process that’s best started a few months ahead. First, an Intended Marriage Form needs to be filled out – the resort’s wedding coordinator will be able to pass this on to you – and then this form needs to be lodged with the Vanuatu government at least 28 days prior to the wedding day. From there a couple will need to be in Vanuatu at least three working days prior to the wedding. Plus the following will also need to be provided: • Birth certificates and valid passports • Divorce papers (if applicable) • Death certificate (if a previous spouse has passed away) • One witness for each person to prove your identity

Vanuatu is home to dramatic landscapes, Instagram-worthy white sand beaches and a welcoming culture where the majority of people live an uncomplicated lifestyle. Its warm climate, stunning natural surrounds, ease of travel and beautiful simplicity provide the perfect location for romantic escapes and weddings. There’s always a sense of anticipation when you start getting closer to your final destination. For couples who have planned a special romantic occasion, those expectations will no doubt be heightened. But as soon as your flight descends into Vanuatu, your mind will be put at ease. Sparkling blue water, white sand coves, lush rainforest and spectacular mountain backdrops. Yes, you’re in the right place for romance.

IN AND AROUND PORT VILA Bauerfield International Airport on the outskirts of Port Vila is the first touchdown for visitors. Home to a beautiful natural harbour, and with stunning views from the surrounding hillsides, Port Vila hums with locals going about their daily business and tourists exploring a fantastic choice of eateries and shopping. As you’d expect, Port Vila provides romance travellers with Vanuatu’s most extensive selection of accommodation and venue options. But even though this is Vanuatu’s busiest centre, many of these resorts are tucked away in secluded locations. So the vibe is peaceful, private and relaxed. The town has plenty of activities to keep a couple occupied (if they so desire). Taking a stroll along the harbour boardwalk is an excellent place to start. During the day, there’s a vibrant buzz as visitors and locals soak up the pleasant waterfront setting. The iconic Nambawan Café is a great spot to pop into – grab an outdoor table, a glass of wine, a bite to eat and watch the world go by. Just a few steps down, the Rossi Restaurant offers the same spectacular views and a wide variety of fresh cuisine.

SANTO ©VANUATU TOURISM

Elsewhere in Port Vila you’ll discover a fine selection of Pacific influenced French, Italian and Asian cafés and restaurants. Or you can pop into one of the many waterfront bars to enjoy a delicious cocktail or a glass of wine. Set the evening up by watching the sunset with a quiet pre-dinner drink. While couples might be tempted to ‘stay-put’ in Port Vila, that would mean missing some of the hidden gems that make Vanuatu so unique. Our advice would be to hire a car and go exploring! An hour and a half from Port Vila on the eastern side of Efate Island is the Blue Lagoon, a large swimming hole with a refreshing mix of salty and fresh water. The perfect place for a dip on a hot summer’s day, enjoy the surrounding gardens, have a swing on the ropes or make the most of the picnic tables to sample your fresh treats from Mama’s Markets. The Rarru Cascades is another equally picturesque swimming spot to visit. Drive east from Port Vila for about half an hour. When you come to the Rentapao Bridge, you’ve come to the right place. A tranquil riverside track will take you to the Rarru Falls cascade, with its collection of beautiful green pools. The kind you can’t wait to jump into. Speaking of jumping, there are rope swings of varying heights and a couple of high platforms if you’d like an extra adrenalin rush. Other adventurous options around Port Vila include parasailing, zip-lining, kayaking, surfing and jet boating.

SANTO ©VANUATU TOURISM

TANNA – SPARKS WILL FLY While Port Vila and the island of Efate have more than enough to offer in the natural beauty department, couples wanting to go further afield will find a whole new world of activities and sightseeing opportunities. If time allows there are some great places to stay on Tanna. If time isn’t on your side, a fly-in fly-out day trip is still worth it. If you’re after real fireworks, the island of Tanna is the place to go. Here visitors can experience all the power of Mt Yasur – Vanuatu’s most active volcano. It takes just 45 minutes to hike the mountain on foot, or those wanting a more chilled-out adventure can park their fourwheel-drive just minutes from the crater rim. You’ll be rewarded with the spewing of hot magma skyward every few minutes! If you’d prefer to cool down, try swimming in the spectacular waters of Tanna’s Blue Cave. A hole in the roof of the cave lets the sunshine through, turning the water a beautiful iridescent blue. If you have a Go Pro or waterproof phone or camera, make sure it’s packed – this is the photo op of a lifetime! There is also more fun outside the caves. Leap off the platforms that are set-up for those who love making a splash!

SANTO – BE SEDUCED Organising a “two flight wedding” isn’t impossible. Still, it does add a level of complexity and cost – with extra flights, accommodation and transport just some of the necessary additions. But for a couple on a honeymoon or romantic getaway, going off the beaten track is very appealing and very straightforward. This is where Santo comes in! At around 50-minutes flight time from Port Vila, the island of Santo might be a quick hop away – but it feels like another world. If you think that Efate is quiet, which it is, get ready for next-level relaxation! Diving and snorkelling enthusiasts will find their paradise on Santo. The island’s rich World War II history has left a playground of wrecks to explore. Million Dollar Point offers tonnes of dumped surplus army equipment (Jeeps, plane parts) ready for an underwater investigation. As well as diving, visitors can hike to war remnants, kayak or cycle the coast, explore caves and experience unique vegetation and wildlife. A favourite for visitors is to paddle a traditional outrigger canoe to spectacular blue holes, where they can swing from giant banyan trees into a freshwater spring.

MT YASUR ©VANUATU TOURISM

Santo also has arguably Vanuatu’s most beautiful beach, aptly named, Champagne Beach. Picture warm, translucent water, powdery white sand and offshore islands in the distance, all surrounded by dark green tropical rainforest. It’s magic. And if it were anywhere else in the world, it would be crammed with resorts, shops, cafés, restaurants and thousands of people. But in Santo, the crowd factor is non-existent – except during cruise ship visits – which a couple should plan to avoid anyway.

The personal touch

Virginia Shore, Wedding Coordinator K2 Weddings, Port Vila How long have you had this role? Some time! I have been a wedding coordinator in Vanuatu for the last 12 years and previously worked in a similar role back in Australia.

What lead-time do you require to plan a wedding? I’ve organised a wedding in less than a week, though I do prefer a little longer lead time if possible!

How many weddings do you organise each month? It just depends on the time of the year. The busier months are those in the middle of the year, but regardless, I only do one wedding a day – that way I can give every couple my full attention.

What are some of the unique things you can offer? K2 Weddings is unique in itself, as we have a personalised wedding coordinator and a dedicated Executive Chef. Vanuatu has some amazing wedding locations, and our local knowledge gives us access to some of the most unique spots – such as private villas, waterfall backdrops, pristine beaches and coconut plantations, to name just a few! We cover everything from administration and paperwork, to providing all food and beverage requirements, accommodation requirements, through to planning and coordination of the actual wedding day.

What are some of the ways you personalise a wedding? Our range of options is vast. From custom dancers and conch shell blowers to school choirs and fire dancers, “old school” buses, mini mokes and horseback options for transport, world-class photographers and many more exciting options on top of that!

What are the Top 3 things a planner needs to find out? What they want for their wedding day. What are their expectations of myself and Vanuatu. What the budget is!

Best advice you would give a couple? Don’t stress over the little things – that’s what I am here for! It is your day and all about what you want. Relax and enjoy it.

What’s your key tip to avoiding wedding day stress? Start the day with champagne!

Do you have any unique wedding stories to share? All weddings are memorable and unique. I especially love it when the couple come back to celebrate their wedding anniversary because they had such a great time! I have couples that stay in touch with me and update me on their lives and send me photos of their babies. Others contact me when they come back to Vanuatu, and we catch up for a coffee.

REAL LIFE

WEDDINGS

James and Irene Kerin Tamanu on the Beach Resort and Spa

What inspired you to have a South Pacific island wedding? We’d always wanted to get married on a tropical island beach and Vanuatu fulfilled our brief. Although we’d never been before, we browsed lots of photos and just thought it would be the perfect destination for us. We weren’t disappointed!

What made you pick your resort? Tamanu on the Beach were super-responsive. Their website was well laid out and the food looked amazing! We loved the wedding packages they offered and given it was just the two of us, they were able to be very flexible with what they could offer.

How many guests did you have? None! It was just the two of us – which was perfect!

What were some of the advantages of an island wedding? Getting married in Vanuatu was so simple. The whole process for us was very chilled, we submitted our documents to Raewyn (the wedding planner at Tamanu) and she submitted them where they needed to go. The whole process was very smooth and stress free.

What were some of the disadvantages? There were no real disadvantages to getting married there. If we’d invited family and friends there would have been a travel factor (we are Irish and English), but that wasn’t an issue for us.

Did you stay in Vanuatu for your honeymoon? Yes, we stayed at Tamanu on the Beach for the entire time – and loved every minute of it!

What did you love most about getting married in the islands? We loved how relaxed it was. The resort staff and Pastor Gideon were a joy to be around and very helpful. The setting was amazing – the beach was fab and we loved the setup for the ceremony and the reception. The food was exceptional too.

What were some of your honeymoon highlights? Apart from spending quality time together, we pampered ourselves with a massage at the spa. Plus our deluxe villa had a plunge pool which we made great use of!

How did the videos and photos turn out? Magic! Groovy Banana captured our moments in a way that reflected our personalities.

Looking back, was there anything you would do differently? Not a thing – it was perfect!

A local flavour

Esther Maximo, Wedding Planner Ramada Resort Port Vila

E st her Maximo

How long have you had this role? I’ve been involved in the hospitality industry for the past seven years and joined the fabulous Ramada Resort in 2019. What lead-time do you require to plan a wedding? Every wedding is different. It just depends on the complexity of the arrangements that need to be made. Small, simple weddings will always be quicker than bigger, more elaborate affairs. What are some of the unique things you can offer? Although we tailor each wedding to a couple’s taste, we do like to tie in aspects of our rich local culture – to make the day extra special. This might be a performance by the Ekasup cultural dancers, a fire show by our local boys or a bride entrance in a local canoe with warriors. What do you enjoy most about your job? I love meeting new people and providing them with a unique experience on one of the most important days of their life. What are the Top three things a planner needs to find out from a couple? 1. The budget! There’s no point coming up with ideas that aren’t feasible. 2. Guest list. It’s harder than you think, so start planning early. 3. Confirm the wedding venue and ceremony locations. What are some of the ways you personalise a wedding? We put together the things that a couple love! For example, they might have table numbers named after their favourite artists or sports players. Or they can create their own playlist. What the best advice you could give a couple? Planning a wedding can be stressful, so fixing a budget from the start, setting priorities, and making your wedding personal in creative ways will take most of that the stress away! What is your crucial tip to avoiding wedding day stress? Relax and take some time out for yourself. What is the best time of the year to get married at your resort? In Port Vila – anytime! It’s nice and warm all year round, but as a rule, June to October are the most popular months – when it’s winter in New Zealand and Australia. Do you have any memorable stories you can share? At one particular wedding, the bride arrived by canoe with warriors holding spears. As they stepped off the canoe, the groom had to defeat the warriors and claim his prize (the bride). It was so romantic and emotional to watch – everybody loved that bridal entrance.

COOK ISLANDS

Tying the knot

The legal requirements of getting married in the Cook Islands are straightforward, but there a few things that Kiwis should note: • If a bride or groom is under the age of 21 they will need written parental consent. • An application for a marriage licence must be made in person to the Registrar of Marriages at least three working days before the wedding, New Zealanders cannot apply for a licence before they arrive. • Applicants for a wedding licence must produce a passport, and if divorced, a copy of the Decree Absolute.

The Cook Islands has long been a favourite for couples in search of romance. The warm tropical sunshine and spectacular natural scenery provide a backdrop that few islands can match. But beyond the jawdropping views and silky white sands is a genuine ‘local’ experience that couples can connect with. The Cook Islands is a destination where visitors holiday alongside locals who go about daily life in their relaxed island way. As opposed to some Pacific destinations, where the wedding experience, honeymoon or romantic getaway centres around the resort or hotel a couple choose to stay. In these places, a couple might never leave the property’s front gate. But in the Cook Islands, things are quite different. ‘The Cooks’ boasts magical resorts, hotels and boutique properties that are perfect for weddings, honeymoon and romantic escapes. But the real charm of the Cook Islands is the ease and enjoyment of sampling local life. Like strolling down to a beachside café and grabbing a bite to eat. Or pulling up a bar stool chewing the fat with a few characters at a local bar like Trader Jack’s. Or grabbing a scooter and taking a tiki tour – randomly stopping off at secluded beaches, off-beat art galleries or anywhere else that catches the eye. Needless to say, couples will love exploring the islands together. For the couples getting married, the “big day” will naturally be the highlight of any trip. And just like the Cook Islands vibe, there is

72

no reason to stress. The island is home to expert event planners, wonderful venues, first-class food and beverage options and exceptional accommodation. Rest assured, a couple are sure to find what they’re looking for.

FIRST STOP RAROTONGA All international flights to the Cook Islands land in Rarotonga and any couple in search of romance will be spoilt for choice. Rarotonga boasts some seriously stunning escapes. Beautiful beachfront resorts providing every possible convenience, boutique adults-only luxury, selfcontained apartment-style accommodation and private guesthouses are all great options and fit most budgets. Exploring Avarua is a must. If you’re travelling by car or scooter, simply find a park in the middle of town (there are plenty to choose from) and go for a wander – everything is within easy walking distance. There are enough shops for those wanting some retail therapy – keep an eye out for the famous black pearls from the smaller islands of Manihiki and Penrhyn. There are also plenty of cafés and restaurants to tempt the tastebuds. The coastal road that circles the island is only 32 kilometres long, so even with a 50 kilometre per hour speed limit, you’ll do the circuit in under an hour. Not that you’ll ever get around that quickly – there is too much to stop and see along the way! Dotted all around the island are a variety of cafés, restaurants, bars and shops. When you feel the need, simply pull over and stop for a bite, beverage or browse. Keep a lookout for Charlie’s Café, which is set up in an old shipping container and pop into The Moorings Café, which has a reputation for making the Cook Island’s most delicious sandwiches! And if you feel like a dip, simply stop at any number of beaches – chances are you’ll have it to yourselves.

REAL LIFE

WEDDINGS

Jesse and Luke Youngman Pacific Resort Rarotonga

What inspired you to have a Pacific Island wedding? We loved the idea of a destination wedding where we could celebrate our love with our nearest and dearest, not only on the wedding day itself but on a holiday where we could all make memories together.

What attracted you to the Cook Islands? We first visited Rarotonga a few years ago on a romantic holiday for my birthday. We immediately fell in love with the amazing tropical scenery, friendly locals and relaxed vibe of the island, and we knew it was the perfect place to begin married life together.

What made you pick the specific resort? After previously visiting Rarotonga, we wanted to get married on the Muri side of the island. The lagoon is beautiful and so lovely to swim in. We loved the feel of Pacific Resort Rarotonga right on Muri Lagoon – particularly the accommodation, and the beautiful ceremony and reception locations. It’s family-friendly too, i.e. ideal for our guests with small children.

How many guests did you have? 33 in total.

What are some of the advantages of tying the knot in Rarotonga? We were not just celebrating our wedding on the day itself, but we were able to enjoy a holiday with our favourite people and create amazing memories with them across the week. The islands also create the perfect tropical backdrop for any wedding, the scenery is breathtaking.

Did your resort or wedding venue offer a wedding planner? Veronica, Pacific Resort’s Wedding and Event Manager was my prime point of contact prior to arrival in Rarotonga. On arrival I met the wedding coordinator Sunnelia. Honestly, they were amazing! It was so helpful having someone to direct questions to, receive recommendations and customise my wedding to suit our needs. It also made the wedding stress-free!

What’s your top tip for an island wedding? Where possible, choose and support local vendors – they know what works well in the location. For example, our local photographer had shot many weddings at our resort. And embrace the local cuisine – the islands offer so many fresh, flavoursome food options you don’t get back home.

What were some of the special ‘island’ touches? Our tropical flowers and greenery were absolutely stunning and now hold special meaning to me now we are home. We tried to showcase the amazing fresh seafood including ika mata and prawns on our menu. The resort had a ukulele player serenade me down the aisle, an island maiden dancer followed the ceremony, an island string band entertained guests during cocktail hour and fire dancers followed dinner! THE

INSIDE WORD

Special moments made easy Trish Tau, Wedding Planner Rarotonga How long have you had this role? Since 2005.

What lead time do you require to plan a wedding?

Trish Tau

Ceremonies can be organised quickly, but the bigger weddings, receptions require a little more time with the booking of suppliers. This is why it’s so important to have a trusted network you can call on when needed. Relationships in this business are just as important as the ones in real life.

How many weddings do you organise each month? It really depends on the year, season, what month couples met and if they have a specific time in the relationship they want to cherish for a lifetime.

What are some of the unique things you can offer? Definitely our private beach location. Keep it personal and friendly I say.

What are the main benefits of getting married at your resort or destination? Secluded beach and intimate setting. Majestic coconut palms. Rustic and beautiful in an authentic Cook Islands way.

What do you enjoy most about your job? Everyday can change at the drop of hat, keeps it spicy – who wants boring!

What are Top 3 things a planner needs to find out from a couple? 1. What theme they want to achieve. Being a little island in the Pacific you can’t just run down the road and find that little something out of the ordinary as you might be able to in large countries like New Zealand or Australia. 2. Their budget is a great place to start the planning process. This will keep the bride focused once we have created some boundaries. 3. Lastly her colours for flowers and types available, this always tends to be an important one for the brides.

Best advice you would give a couple? Let a planner do it ... yes it comes at a cost, but at the end of the day why stress yourself out when this is the most important day of your life. Why spend endless nights searching through pages of info when the professionals have a network that is probably the best available.

What is the best time of the year to get married at your resort / destination? In the Cooks all year round! But if you’d prefer the cooler months July to October.

REAL LIFE

WEDDINGS

Joshua and Ashleigh-Rose Branch Muri Beach Club Hotel, Rarotonga What inspired you to have a South Pacific island wedding? We have always loved Rarotonga. We love being on the beach and have always liked the idea of a relaxing destination wedding – so ‘Raro’ was perfect for us!

What made you pick that specific island ahead of all the others? Rarotonga feels like home away from home. It’s almost like a little New Zealand in the Pacific, which makes it very easy to settle in and feel comfortable as soon as you step off the plane.

What made you pick your specific resort? We looked at five resorts before we choose Muri Beach Club Hotel. We were attracted to this resort by the perfect beach, amazing swimming pool and Terina the wedding coordinator.

How many guests did you have? 51 people including us.

What were some of the advantages of getting married in the islands? Gorgeous, freshly cut tropical flowers. It was excellent value for money – a wedding and holiday in one package. The food was delicious.

Did your resort provide a wedding planner? Yes, Terina was amazing! She helped in every possible way – from booking accommodation for our guests, to arranging flowers, to last minute bookings of make-up artists 12 hours before the wedding. She not only made our wedding day go by without any issues, but she also made the entire trip run smoothly for us and all our guests.

3. Choose your venue wisely. Make sure it caters for all your needs before booking it in. 4. Be open with your communication so you can optimise your wants and needs when over there. 5. It is island time so go with the flow. Something might not work out, but it isn’t the end of the world.

Did you stay on the same island for your honeymoon? No, we went to Aitutaki for 3 nights after the wedding. So beautiful over there!

What did you love most about getting married in the islands?

If you had a friend planning an island wedding, what would be your top tips?

Being on the beach and seeing all our friends and family enjoy the sun, fun and cocktails.

1. Get a wedding planner on the ground in your destination. They will make your life easy and destress you when needed.

How was the dining and catering?

2. Arrive early to your wedding to arrange the last-minute details. Plus, this means extra holiday time for you.

The food was one of the best parts of the wedding. Fresh salads, perfectly cooked meat and enough food to feed an army. Guests were still talking about the food two months later!

For a lot of couples, the death of romance is quite simple; time. The pace of life seems to get faster and fuller, and the rare opportunity we get to just stop, breathe and turn to those we love with our full focus and gaze must be grasped with both hands. If you don’t have a full understanding of how nourishing that time could be, you will after you visit Niue. This small, perfectly formed, stunning little slice of the South Pacific runs at a pace that opens the senses right up. The natural beauty of the island and the crystal clear waters that surround it entirely will restore you. With fewer than 1500 people living on the island, it’s small enough to drive right around in a few hours, and large enough to keep you exploring and discovering new swims, walks and views for days on end. If you need more than a resort break, but you want all those pleasures with plenty of adventure and discovery to boot, Niue is your spot.

94

Pacific Romance

So where to start. Even if you’re the sort of couple who is capable of finding your own way around a new destination, it is well worth taking a guided tour of the island on your first day. Two hours with Explore Niue owner Vanessa Marsh will set you up for the week. She’ll show you the best places to swim and snorkel and recommend some fantastic dining options. And she knows so much about the landscape, the history of the island and almost every single plant, insect and sea creature you come across. From there, you can explore with to your heart’s content. Self-drive is the best way to make the most of the island. You can pick up a roomy reliable rental right at the airport from Niue Rentals. Everything is so close and very well sign-posted, it is a five-minute drive from the airport down to the Scenic Matavai Resort and short trips to all the best swimming and eating spots. Dodging all the biggest potholes can be a challenge! But even though some sections of the road are a little worse for wear, there is no rush hour, no traffic lights and no worries. Bliss! Together uncovering all the amazing coastal pools and caves and immersing yourselves in the cleanest ocean you’ll ever swim in, often having the place all to yourself, is the most incredible feeling. Limu Pools and the Avaiki Caves are both extraordinary natural wonders and swimming at high tide inside one of the main Avaiki Caves is an almost spiritual experience. You’ll likely have the entire place

to yourself. The water is an astonishing shade of clear deep blue and turquoise. Most couples walk away saying they have never seen or swum in anything like it. You’ll need a whole day and then another at Limu Pools, there are so many nooks and crannies to snorkel and the entire place changes as the tide comes in and out. The pools on the far right as you go in have a very cool arched cave through to some even more impressive snorkelling spots teeming with coral fish, so take your time! Another unique location to add to your itinerary is the Matapa Chasm. Freshwater meets the ocean here with sheer high cliffs on either side, and if you float on your back you’ll feel the gentle surge as the sea breathes in and out of the chasm – it’s just amazing. If the idea of a tropical wedding and/or honeymoon has always been a dream, Niue may not immediately spring to mind. But the appeal of doing something different, somewhere different where your guests will get a very special, unforgettable experience, definitely consider Niue. The Scenic Matavai has a lovely banquet room which looks out onto the ocean and there are plenty of accommodation options within the resort and beyond for guests. There are fishing, snorkelling and dive tours to entertain friends and family. Honestly, the list is endless when it comes to getting wedding photos, there are just so many stunning coastal and forest backdrops within a stone’s throw of the resort and further afield, you’ll need an entire day just for photos! To ease the wedding recovery, wander to the Washaway Café at Avatele Beach on a Sunday. It’s only open Sundays, and owner Willy makes fresh bread for the burger buns and they are delicious. The honesty box self-service bar is the stuff of legends and there is no better place to chill back with a burger and beer and watch the sun go down on another gorgeous Niuean day.

On the subject of good eating with good views, on the way to the Matapa Chasm stop by the Hio Café for its divine iced chocolates and coastal vista and grab a coffee from the Crazy Uga in Alofi when you need one. If you prefer your views with a little competitive golfing, the Vaiolama Café on the outskirts of Alofi has an awesome mini golf course and do not leave without sampling their specialty, the rockmelon crush (get in early though, they run out fast!). Given how brilliant the shallows are for snorkelling, go and see Anthony and Tom at Niue Dive right next door to the Scenic Matavai for an even deeper adventure. Your snorkelling adventure will begin by piling onto the back of their ute for the short drive to the boat ramp. Avatele Beach is only a couple of minutes up the road and has a well-kitted out ramp complete with a sturdy crane to lower the dive boat into the sea. A few minutes later you’ll be off through the narrow reef channel out into the open sea. Anthony will take you right across the bay, along the way imparting his inside knowledge about both land and sea and especially where the best snorkel and dive spots are for beginners and pros alike. He has worked as a dive instructor all over the world, and he says that Niue is hands down the best place he’s dived. Most days you’ll get to swim with the Spinner dolphins and of course, don’t forget the June to October whale season. You’ll see a tonne of big and small reef fish, lots of cool yellow and black sea snakes and quite possibly a turtle or two. The visibility is unlimited and the deep water is just so refreshing you won’t want to get out.

© NIUE TOURISM

TAKE A TIKI TOUR With most of the more popular swimming spots on the Alofi side of the island, the other side of Niue has plenty of hidden treasures for the more adventurous. A couple can spend a full day driving around the entire island, passing through Avatele and onwards up the back of the island. The bigger ocean swells smash into the cliffs creating lots of caves and chasms to see and explore. There are two must-do walks. One is the more challenging trek to the Togo Chasm, the other is back up the top of the island, the Talava Arches. The arches are an uneven but fairly easy walk and best at low tide, put aside a few hours to make the most of them. The Togo Chasm will need a few hours too and will require good comfy sturdy walking shoes for the coastal rocks and the steep ladder, but the views are worth the effort. If you want the views without the excursion, head for the Anaana Lookout up the coast from the Scenic Matavai. Go at high tide during a big swell and you’ll see the ocean smash through into the underwater caves below and blast high into the sky through the blowholes. It’s the perfect spot for unrestricted views high up and down the coastline and of course prime viewing for whales when they’re visiting. And let’s not forget this spot for those spectacular wedding photos!

PLACES TO STAY The Scenic Matavai Resort The Scenic Matavai Resort will feel like home the moment you wander in. The staff will greet you with genuine warmth and your first task will be to sip on fresh coconut water, direct from an actual coconut no less! While you’re sipping, walk out onto the expansive deck high on the cliffs above the sweeping bay, and soak up the breath-taking views. All the rooms make maximum use of the ocean views. They also come with a spacious layout, high ceiling with lots of light and their own balcony looking out through the palm trees to the sea below. If you’re a stickler for a good hot strong shower, the simple, stylish bathrooms will deliver on that. The lovely wicker chair settings indoors and out are also perfect for settling into with a book and a beer as a sundowner in the evenings. And while the rooms come with televisions, most couples won’t bother to turn it on! (When in Niue it’s nice to stay detached from the outside world). The resort offers air conditioning in all the rooms and in the hot peak summer months there’s no doubt that would be a godsend. The large ceiling fan above the comfy super king bed is your other cooling option. A short meander to the main building and you’ll find the Dolphin Restaurant and Bar and the main reception area. Then the short drop down the stairs to the two lovely pools and swim-up pool bar. Try a “Kafesi a Niue” cocktail drizzled with delicious fresh Niuean Gold Honey and soak up the unbeatable sunsets from here. As if the sunsets

weren’t enough, there are the regular visits from large pods of Spinner Dolphins as they cruise off the resort. Of course, time your holiday right and it won’t be just the dolphins you’ll see from the deck at the Scenic Matavai. Niue is well known as a spectacular place to whale-watch between June and late September – when the humpback whale settles into the warmer environs off Niue to breed. There are specialist licenced operators who treat visitors to close-quarter encounters with these magnificent sea creatures – an absolute must-do experience for any couple. The resort is the ideal base for all your exploring and a haven to come home to. You can also book a couples massage in the peace and quiet of your own room. The yummy buffet-style breakfast will set you up for the day and the staff were such a lovely bunch, nothing will be a problem.

Lau’s Getaway There are some excellent boutique options available for couples. Lau’s Getaway ( just along the road from Scenic Matavai Resort) consists of two bright blue villas that sit on a cliff edge overlooking the ocean. You can spot them from miles away! Their sweeping views are incredible, and during the whale season you’ll have the best seat in the house. Their signature feature is a private bathtub located on the deck – think hot bubbles, sunset and cold bubbles, i.e. a nice bottle of Champagne.

Namukulu Cottages & Spa At the other end of the island is the Namukulu Cottages & Spa. Set in beautiful, park-like grounds, couples have a choice of six cottages, each with expansive decks. Namukulu also has a swimming pool, plus the Matapa Chasm and Limu Pools are just a few minutes away too. And they have a day spa for some essential getaway pampering.

INSIDE WORD

The joy of life's surprises By Kate Roger It’s my job to ask people interesting, though-provoking questions, but one of my own big questions was ‘where to get married’. As it turned out, the answer, that had so far eluded me, came about in a rather unexpected way. In a rather unexpected place. Niue! You see Tristan, my partner of 10 year is Niuean born, but he hadn’t been back to Niue since he was a kid. When the opportunity to visit the island popped up, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to wind back from life back home, spend some quality time together and give Tristan the chance to re-connect with his birthplace. The wonderfully laid-back island provided all of the above and more. From rock pool swimming, to diving with dolphins to eating seafood that was literally straight from the boat, we soaked up every second of this serene South Pacific paradise. And five days later, the answer was as clear as Niue’s crystal blue waters. This is where our wedding bells will ring.

Kate’s Top Romantic Tips Sip cocktails at sunset at Scenic Matavai Resort Even though you’ll already be super-relaxed (you can’t help it in Niue) – take your chill factor to the next level by watching the sunset from the deck at Scenic Matavai Resort. The view is top-shelf and so are the resort’s yummy cocktails!

Find a secluded snorkelling spot One of the best things about Niue is you don’t have to share! You’ll be lucky to see another soul, even at the island’s most popular rock pools – try the Limu Pools, Matapa Chasm and Avaiki Cave. Pack a picnic while you’re at it.

Get on your bike They say a couple that plays together, stays together! So hire a mountain bike and pedal along one of Niue’s many tropical bush trails. Apart from enjoying some quality active time, you’ll see parts of the island many tourists miss out on.

Gaze into the night sky Look skyward at night and you’ll be gobsmacked by what you see! Niue is essentially free from light pollution, which makes for some world-class stargazing. It’s even better done with a glass of wine in hand.

Tying the knot In 2009 a change in policy meant that couples visiting New Caledonia could hold a civil wedding ceremony. Applications are made to the NoumĂŠa City Authorities five to six months in advance, via an email to the Town Hall Records Authority. Proof of civil status and a certificate of residence is required. An officially approved translator (French/English) will be present at the ceremony. After the ceremony, a certified transcription of their marriage certificate then needs to be taken to the consulate of their country.

A TASTE OF FRANCE If France were a sole city on an island in the South Pacific, it would be Nouméa. The New Caledonian cosmopolitan capital is nestled in the south of Grand Terre – the main island – where stunning South Pacific beauty blends with the elegance and romance of French culture. Many people call Nouméa the ‘foodie capital of the South Pacific’. And it’s hard to argue. Exquisite French wine, macaroons, cheese, pastries and cuisine – infused with island flavours – can be found on almost every corner of the city; in the form of restaurants, bakeries, Cafés, Parisian-style bistros, and local markets. So much to sample, so little time! But there are some highlights that should be on every couples list. Au P’tit café, one of Nouméa’s most famous restaurants, which can be found on Avenue des Freres. This café has ditched the normality of a set menu to constantly test the chefs’ creativity. Each week they craft a line-up of four new dinners and desserts to suit the seasons. One thing does stay the same, however – their famous passionfruit cheesecake. A delicious treat to top off the evening. The local markets are well worth a visit too. Port Moselle Market is New Caledonia’s largest market, which sits right next to the marina at Port Moselle. It provides market-goers – early and late risers alike – with a large selection of fresh local produce, delicious seafood, a French-inspired café bar, and souvenirs to take home, from Tuesday morning to Sunday morning. The succulent exotic fruits of the South Pacific and the freshly baked croissants are recommended. Nouméa is also rich with culture, enticing settlers from around the world since the first European colonisers arrived in 1853. You’ll see it in

the architecture, arts, attractions and lifestyle. The capital’s art galleries, cinemas, museums and theatres showcase this way of life and New Caledonia’s history. There is a lot for curious couples in Nouméa, and it’s easy to do. Ladies take note, the city centre is well known to those who love to shop, especially lovers of French fashion. Small clothing and accessory shops can be found on the streets of Rue de L’Alma and Rue de Sebastopol. However, major global brands are also present. To the south, on La promenade in Anse Vata, is a great place to enjoy some leisurely up-market shopping.

CITY BEACH There’s not much worse than being stuck in a city on a sweltering day. But luckily, Noumea is not your typical city. The waterfront provides refreshing sea breezes and there are some beautiful beaches too. Baie des Citrons, is a laid back spot where couples can enjoy the bars, night clubs, restaurants, and stores on the shoreline road. Golden sand, trees and warm waters lie just beyond. Or chill out at Anse Vata Bay, ‘Nouméa’s beautiful walkway’. Both are picturesque spots to kick back and relax. Feel like a little more action, how about harnessing the wind and zooming across the lagoon? There is a reason why you’ll see a ton of kites rushing along the waves; Nouméa is perfect for kitesurfing, regardless of your experience on a board. There are lessons for both newcomers and veterans alike available around the city. Kitesurf Attitude and Nouméa Kite School are just two of the various local establishments that offer them.

ABOVE AND BEYOND While Nouméa is a fantastic city, the rest of Grand Terre can often slide under tourists’ radars. Which is a shame. The largest island in the South Pacific has so much to offer. And is perfect for adventurous couples who are keen to rent a car, hit the road and discover the beauty that lies beyond. There are plenty of hiking trails, carved out between forests and along mountains, for couples who want to stretch their legs and take in New Caledonia’s great outdoors. The Great South region is tattooed with the colours of red, green and blue. You’ll find nature reserves and parks to walk, such as the vast Blue River Park and the N’Dua Reserve. Cap N’Dua, found on the tip of the Grand Sud, has a phenomenal view from a lookout, where humpback whales can sometimes be spotted. Or take a long-distance hike from the old village of Prony to the dam of the Dumbea river, across seven main stages paved by the red soil of the Great South region. In the north of Grand Terre, Gouaro Deva is another spectacular hike, where visitors can climb the highest peak of New Caledonia, Mont Panie. But for hikers of all levels, the mountainous village of Sarramea is the place to go and submerge yourself in the island’s greenery.

Ile des Pins ‘The closest island to paradise’, is what the Ile des Pins (Isle of Pines) has been labelled by both locals and visitors. And rightly so. New Caledonia’s southernmost island is an absolute gem – and it’s only a 20-minute flight from Nouméa. Picture salt-white sand sprinkled around a coast bordered by clear turquoise water and palm trees. Oro, Kanumera, Kuto and Upi Bays more than live up to this image. They’re all beautiful places to take a dip or let the soft sand filter through your fingers as you soak up the warm beating sun. A pleasant walk down along the sandy river from Oro Bay at low-tide will take you to one of the island’s most sought after spots: a beautiful natural saltwater swimming pool. An idyllic spot to bathe in nature’s handiwork. Plus bring your snorkel. The abundance of brightly-coloured tropical fish will blow you away! While you’re visiting the Ile des Pins, be sure to hike up N’ga Peak, the highest point of the island. This stunning view is the perfect backdrop for taking romantic photos to frame back home – or to make your followers jealous on Instagram. While it is possible to make day trips across to the Ile des Pins, it is well worth staying for at least a couple of nights to soak up the island’s majesty.

The Loyalty Islands The Loyalty Islands are for travelling couples who want to experience paradise and true traditional Melanesian culture, beyond life’s creature comforts. These islands are immensely beautiful and pristine, with each offering their own unique spin on paradise.

Lifou The largest of the Loyalty Islands is home to glowing white sands, sparkling blue lagoons, vibrant coral cliffs, limestone caves, and rich forestry – Lifou has all the ingredients for a romantic adventure. Embrace the local culture and go on a guided tour led by people who have lived off and loved the land for countless generations.

Mare The easternmost island of the bunch is the tallest and perhaps the most pristine – which is by no means an easy title to claim. Lush forest covers the land and steep cliffs rise above. The beaches of Mare are stunning. Like the other Loyalty Islands, snorkelling should be mandatory, or at least a swim in the lagoon. Warrior’s Leap, towering 30 metres above sea level, is a must-see cliff with a must-hear legendary tale. The natural aquarium is another sight to behold and experience, with crystal clear water trapped among tropical forest.

Ouvea A World Heritage site, Ouvea is a truly remarkable atoll surrounded by an assortment of reefs and islets that are considered paradise for divers. The island is just 35 kilometres in length and 40 metres wide, meaning it’s easy for couples to experience all it has to offer – and it’s just a short flight away from Nouméa. Lay down on 25 kilometres of immaculate white sand at Fayaoue Beach. Strap on a snorkel and watch tropical fish glide past your very eyes. But don’t forget to visit Hanawa Blue Hole, a large dent in the atoll filled with seawater and is completely surrounded by rainforest.

REAL LIFE

WEDDINGS

George and Frances Quirke Escapade Island Resort, L’Ilot Maître & Hilton Noumea La Promenade Residences, Noumea

What did you love most about getting married in New Caledonia? There were a lot of things we loved, but number one was the relaxed nature of having an island wedding. We were in holiday mode from the minute we landed – it was so nice to leave the daily grind behind!

What were some of the advantages of getting married here? New Caledonia is a unique destination. We loved experiencing the mix of French and Kanak cultures. We found the people warm and welcoming. The island’s reputation for fabulous food and drink was spot on! (We had some unbelievable meals.) The beaches are excellent. We enjoyed some great walks and soaked up some of the island’s fascinating history too.

How many guests did you have? It was just us!

Did your resort provide you with a wedding planner? Julie Cassin and Eva Miranda from GLP Hotels (Escapade Island Resort and Hilton Noumea) were superb organisers, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them. They were in regular contact and personalised our experience to a tee.

Did you stay in New Caledonia for your honeymoon? Yes, our wedding ceremony was at Escapade Island Resort on L’Ilot Maître (20-minutes boat ride from Noumea), then we went back to the mainland – staying at Hilton Noumea. This was an excellent mix of quiet and luxurious, then a bit more lively back in Noumea and easy access to plenty of activities.

What were some of the special touches? The stunning views we soaked up and being steps from New Caledonia’s beautiful beaches.

What was the most romantic moment during your stay? The sunset over the ocean horizon from the balcony of our overwater bungalow was magical.

Looking back, was there anything you would do differently? I really can’t think of anything. It was a dream come true.

SOLOMON ISLANDS

Nurtured by nature The Solomon Islands offer a minimalistic travel experience with maximum potential for romance. An unspoiled archipelago of 992 tropical islands and atolls just waiting to be explored – and relaxed upon – coated with lush rainforest and surrounded by pristine lagoons rich with history and life. With rustic accommodation, empty beaches and birdsong chiming, the Solomon’s have the makings of an unforgettable romantic escape. 110

Tying the knot There have been discussions around amending the current Solomon Islands Matrimony Law – to allow overseas couples to conduct religious marriages in the Solomon Islands and have their weddings legally recognised in their country of origin. However, at the time of printing, the law remains unchanged. Civil unions are permitted and recognised internationally, but they can only take place in Honiara.

UNTOUCHED ISLAND ADVENTURES Travel is subjective. What suits one person can be the complete opposite of what suits someone else. The Solomon Islands are a case in point. If your idea of romance is 5-star glitz and glamour, other destinations will satisfy your need. The Solomon Islands is different. It’s for couples that appreciate a destination that has remained in its natural state, untouched by the hands of mainstream tourism. Surrounded by vast lagoons rich with tropical marine life and vibrant coral reefs, the Solomon Islands is heaven for couples who love the water. From the oceans natural wonders to hidden relics of World War II, there is an abundance of underwater adventures to be had. The emerald waters of the Roviana Lagoon are an especially popular diving spot as they are full of life and historical treasures; such as the mysterious artefacts left by the Roviana people of the 19th century including the ‘skull shrine’ found on the aptly named Skull Island. This lagoon is surrounded by barrier reefs and islands, which form what is essentially a closed-off natural underwater city. The reefs of Munda are equally spectacular. At the bottom, the wreckages of war have become a hauntingly beautiful feature of the environment. These waters have a rich history that will provide the platform for rich stories to take home. The Cave of the Kastom Shark

can be found inside the lagoon on one of the islands, where a little freshwater pool leads into two large connected chambers. For couples that prefer to stay on the water, the Solomon Islands have fantastic surfing spots with virtually non-existent crowds. Truly a surfer’s dream. Ride the waves of Malaita Province, which is ideal for novices as well as veteran surfers. Santa Isabel and Western Province are other tremendous spots that offer stays in local villages and wilderness tours. Due to its magnificent lagoons, kayaking is another must-do for couples. The Marovo Lagoon, for instance, is the largest saltwater lagoon in the world. This unspoiled environment is filled with remarkable creatures that can be seen floating above. It’s like looking down into an aquarium. Various tours will take kayakers around the lagoon and provide chances to experience the culture and warm hospitality of the locals. Back on dry land, there are many opportunities afoot. Hiking is a great way for couples to submerge themselves in landscapes as rich as the lagoons that surround them. The most well-known hikes are along the Mataniko River – which was crucial in the Battle of Guadalcanal – and the Mamara Spring Water Walk, a three-day trek across striking scenery and rugged terrain. There are also mountains and volcanoes aplenty in the Solomon’s, providing Instagram-worthy views from all angles. For extra adventurous couples, a hike through the jungle and rainforest of Kolombangara in the Western Province could be precisely the experience you’re looking for. The name is roughly translated from ‘water lord’, in reference to the immense rainfall it receives!

PLACES TO STAY Tavanipupu Island Resort, Marau Sound – the ‘place of the Trigger Fish’ Such a beautiful romantic escape, it’s unsurprising that the Royal couple, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, stayed at Tavanipupu Island Resort in 2012. It was a visit that put the resort into the headlines. And not surprisingly, the cavernous bungalow ‘Wills and Kate’ stayed in quickly became the most sought after room in the resort. After all, how many people can boast they shared the same bed as the future King of England and his wife.

This resort is located on a private tropical island, just a 25-minute plane ride from Honiara. Surrounded by crystal blue waters and pristine reefs, Tavanipupu Island Resort is pure picture postcard. ‘Paradise’ is the first word that springs to mind as you walk through the abundance of palm trees – it was a former coconut plantation. Tavanipupu Island Resort’s restaurant is renowned for serving fresh seafood and traditional Solomon cuisine. Once a week their experienced chefs serve up a special feast for visitors using a traditional oven called a ‘motu’. There are also plenty of activities for couples to take advantage of on the island such as snorkelling, fishing and diving.

Fatboys Resort, Mbabanga Island Named after a Charles Dickens character who spends his life drinking, eating, sleeping and avoiding work, Fatboys Resort is a top spot for couples wanting to enjoy life’s pleasures. This Mbabanga Island resort offers beautiful bungalows for couples. The Honeymoon Bungalow features a large veranda, fitted with a hammock, overlooking the ocean – perfect for unwinding. Alternatively, the new Over the Water Deluxe Bungalow is an equally romantic getaway pad, where you can dive into the turquoise waters from your deck. Despite being the perfect place to do absolutely nothing, there are many adventures to be had for those looking. Go snorkelling or diving over spectacular reefs and marine life. If you’re itching for a hike, head across to the Kolombangara Island. Here you can trek through its diverse ecosystem and around its steep cliffs.

The snorkelling around the resort is also fantastic. There’s a 50-metre drop just off the shore – get ready for huge schools of fish, coral gardens, sponges, lion fish, anemones and more! With only six bungalows, two units and two guest rooms, maximum capacity sits at just 26 beds, so needless to say, the vibe is relaxed!

Ginger Beach Retreat Located just 40 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Honiara, the recently-opened Ginger Beach Retreat is a hidden gem. Offering the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle and tucked away in the heart of a lush tropical garden, just three luxury beachside bungalows look out over Iron Bottom Sound, the resting place of some forty World War II ships and aircraft, across to the mysterious and highly volcanic Savo Island.

Sanbis Resort, Gizo If you’re a couple looking for a private romantic retreat, Sanbis Resort is the answer. Located on a secluded island near the Gizo runway, this adults-only resort is home to private beaches, stunning sights and an array of activities for those wanting to explore. Each of its six bungalows with overwater balconies has been crafted from local materials and fitted with the bare essentials. An environmentally friendly setup offering true tranquility. Of course, there are plenty of snorkelling, fishing, surfing and diving opportunities for water-loving couples. One of Sanbis Resort’s claim to fame is the fact it is the only resort in the entire South Pacific boasting an over-water, wood-fired pizza oven.

Uepi Island Resort, Marovo Lagoon If you’re exploring Maravo Lagoon, this is a great base. The diving is quite simply world-class, plus the resort runs a dive operation that caters to the full range of diving abilities. The ‘learn to dive’ course is perfect for couples wanting their first taste of underwater exploration.

SAMOA

Seduced

by Samoa

Two islands form Samoa, a relaxing South Pacific nation beaming with culture and people as vibrant and relaxed as the land itself. Upolu is the main island, home to the capital city of Apia, which hosts an array of pristine natural gems, such as To Sua Ocean Trench, and beautiful south coast beaches aligned with secluded coves and romantic resorts. Only an hour boat ride away is Savai’i, the largest of the two islands, steeped in traditional Samoan culture. Although less developed, Savai’i offers a serene atmosphere – somehow even more relaxed than its neighbour – and a truly romantic escape location. There are also many adventures to be had for couples seeking a change of pace; from lava fields to blow holes. Savai’i is certainly worth the short trip.

116

Pacific Romance

Tying the knot

Marriages in Samoa are legally recognised internationally. To be married in Samoa, couples will need to apply for a marriage licence with the Ministry of Justice in Apia, at least 14 days prior to your wedding day – but no more than three months in advance. What you will need: a copy of both partners’ passports and birth certificates; death certificates (of past spouses) or Decree Absolute (if divorced); and a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (from your country).

Samoa is layered with natural beauty. Alluring white sand beaches and secluded coves surround the two islands; Islands dotted with spectacular volcanic peaks overlooking valleys of flourishing greenery out toward an endless blue. And between the coconut palms and tropical flowers are villages, exotic wildlife, and waterfalls and rivers that flow together seamlessly – as does romance and Samoa. No wonder “Beautiful Samoa” is the term used by Samoa Tourism to entice travellers. Its picturesque landscape and laid-back vibes provide the idyllic getaway for couples in love.

NATURAL BEAUTY Upolu There is something special about the water in Samoa; and not just the water that goes into its famous beer. To Sua Ocean Trench, for instance, which is iconic for a good reason. Found on Upolu’s south coast, this massive swimming hole sits below beautifully maintained tropical gardens. To get there, one must descend a long ladder. But take your time and there’s nothing to fear. The alluring turquoise water awaits below. It’s wellworth the excursion to be able to float on your back and look up at the wonders above and the lava tube cave connected below. The beaches of Upolu are among the finest in the South Pacific. Salt white sand, clear blue skies and the warm sea – what’s not to love? Head down to the south coast to Tafa Tafa Beach, where beach huts and coconut palm trees align the sand and vibrant coral and marine life lies beneath the water. Down for some snorkelling or scuba diving? Then Lefaga Beach (Return to Paradise) is a must with its astoundingly blue lagoons. Or venture across the island to the south-east tip where Lalomanu Beach resides. Ranked the number one beach in Samoa, Lalomanu is the ultimate relaxation destination; a paradise filled with natural beauty. Its long stretch of paper white sand, abundance of tropical marine life, and a small cluster of beach fales, makes this one for the bucket list.

TO SUA OCEAN TRENCH ©SAMOA TOURISM

There is something undeniably romantic about relaxing on secluded white sand coves with a drink in hand, your partner beside you, and the crystal blue ocean shimmering in front of your eyes, as a gentle breeze rustles the leaves of palm trees. However, Upolu’s south coast has plenty to visit, if you care to explore. You can of course rent a vehicle to explore the island’s many natural treasures. However, while driving can cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time, you risk missing out on some truly magical experiences.

So, perhaps you may like to do some cycling? Taking it slow, exploring the land, absorbing the sights, scents, sounds and tastes that Samoa has on display. There are many off-road tracks which lead through lush rainforests to rivers and waterfalls. Ride along the main roads, however, and you will come across several family-owned market stalls selling delicious fruits and treats of the island. If biking gets a little too hot and sticky, then lap up some thirst-quenching coconut water, and dive into one of the local swimming spots to cool off. If water adventures are what you seek, Manoa Tours have got you covered. They offer surf lessons and surf tours to famous surfing spots around the island. They also offer turtle tours, which involves cruising

around the lagoons by boat and checking out Samoa’s turtles and other marine life in their natural environment. A rare experience not to be forgotten. As the heat of the day begins to subside, Samoa’s capital city, Apia, is worth checking out. Get lost in the delicious food of the Maketi Fou (food market) on Fugalei Street, tasting succulent exotic fruits such as pawpaw or treating yourself to sweet ladyfinger bananas. If you want to seek out souvenirs, then a 10-minute walk away is the flea market, featuring warrior weaponry, lava lavas, jewellery, and authentic Samoan instruments and music. It is a place to slow down, unwind and really experience the simple pleasures of life. Who knew somewhere could be more laid-back than Upolu? This is where the beauty lies in Savai’i and its locals. It is thus a wasted opportunity not to make the trip across from the main island, when complete and utter serenity is only an hour boat ride away. The inter-island ferry will take you from Mulifanua Wharf, only 10 minutes from Faeolo International Airport, across to Salelologa. As the main town of Savai’i, Salelologa is the best place to gather up supplies and rent a vehicle. The Canopy Walkway is considered a must-do for explorers of Savai’i. Walk among the tree tops of Falealupo Rainforest Reserve through a walkway 40 metres above the ground and across a 30 metre gap between two trees. Up there, you’re completely immersed in nothing but silence and birdsong.

SWIMMING WITH TURTLES, SAVAI’I © SAMOA TOURISM

For the more adventurous and active couples, Tafua Peninsula Rainforest Preserve has hiking trails that lead you deep through forestry and over lava-caked terrain to sea caves, cliffs and blowholes. One trail in particular takes you to Tafua Savai’i Crater, an almost Triassic world of sorts, densely packed with vegetation and echoing calls of distant wildlife. The view at the top of the crater is magnificent, so be sure to bring your binoculars to locate tropical birds, flying foxes and coastal villages. Savai’i has some spectacular waterfalls. Afu Aau Falls is once such example and can easily be accessed via your vehicle, however it is highly recommended that you park up and enjoy the 10 minute walk through rainforest to the pool and waterfall. It is a sight to behold and a fantastic place to have a relaxing swim. Savai’i is the in-love nature lover’s paradise and its beautiful beaches live up to this. The most notable beaches can be found between Siufaga and Pu’apu’a, which are perfect for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and romantic walks along the white sand. Every day on Savai’i is a new experience to be cherished. A true Samoan experience.

REAL LIFE

WEDDINGS

Kate Swan and Perry Young

Sinalei Reef Resort and Spa, Samoa

What inspired you to have a Pacific island wedding? We had a holiday booked for a few months. Then we decided we should just get married while we were away to make things low key and relaxed!

What made you pick Samoa? Word of mouth was the main reason. We’d never been to Samoa before, but had heard great things from friends and family.

What stood out about Sinalei Reef Resort and Spa? Again, it was recommended to us by a family member who’d stayed there before. I also scanned Sinalei’s Instagram page and thought the photos and venue looked stunning!

How many guests did you have? We went for a small intimate wedding of 10 guests.

What did you love most about getting married in the islands? The setting was spectacular and the atmosphere was relaxed. Friends and family were able to get a holiday at the same time. Galen, the resort’s wedding planner, was an angel. The staff were friendly and very professional.

What were some of the advantages of getting married in the islands? The best aspect was getting on the plane in Auckland and knowing all our wedding plans had been taken care of. It was our time to relax and enjoy the lead-up to our wedding day with our friends and family. The main advantage was our island wedding became a five-day event, rather than just an afternoon and an evening. We spent time with all our guests, creating amazing memories and sharing many fun times.

What did your guests love most about your wedding? Relaxed atmosphere, beautiful setting, romantic and intimate.

128

Pacific Romance

What were some special touches you’d only get in the islands? The tropical beach setting (friends and family actually went for a swim between the ceremony and dinner/drinks). Plus everyone got to enjoy a real island holiday at the same time.

Last word… This was an experience Perry and I will never forget. We absolutely loved our stay at Sinalei. The staff were so accommodating, really going above and beyond with all the extra touches e.g. decorating our beach front villa for the wedding, singing us a farewell song and playing us a wedding dance song on our last night at the resort. We couldn’t have asked for more.

PHOTOGRAPHERS

SNAPSHOT

Portraits of love Alexia Rae

How long have you been a wedding photographer? I’ve worked in the wedding photography industry for the past seven years, but established my own business ‘Sincerely, Alexia Rae’ two years ago.

What made you specialise in wedding photography? I’m a hopeless romantic! Love is the most wonderful, vulnerable, and timeless expression and I think marriage is a very powerful and humble portrayal of that. My job is literally witnessing two people make a sacred covenant and that’s so special to me. I have been blessed with the most amazing clients and I might start the day feeling like a stranger but often leave feeling like family.

What questions should a couple ask their photographer? In my experience, it’s usually the other way around. If you love the work that your chosen photographer provides, make sure they are asking you questions about your personality and your story. It’s a wedding photographer’s job to capture you in your element – so find someone you connect with.

Can you provide any tips to help them prepare for the shoot? Your wedding clothes are key. Take into consideration the climate of your destination and dress in a manner that will provide ultimate comfort! Also prepare the outfit that makes you feel and look your best – for example, if you don’t like the way your arms look in photos, choose an outfit with sleeves. That way you’ll be relaxed, happier and enjoying the moment.

Alexia Rae How do you get everyone to relax for the candid shots? This is a funny one! I act like a goof and mimic the poses or expressions I want from my clients. We usually end up laughing and everyone just feels super relaxed!

Have you had any unusual requests for locations or scenarios? I got to shoot an elopement in the rain once! It was pretty amazing because the forecast for several weeks was rain and my couple had such a wild love for one another and the water (they are avid paddlers), it all just worked out perfectly!

What is your typical turnaround time? I send my clients their wedding album on their one month wedding anniversary!

THE

INSIDE WORD

A true Polynesian experience Mel Toailoa General Manager Return To Paradise Resort How many weddings does the resort organise each month? On average we would host, one wedding per month, but that can go up to 2 or 3 weddings a month.

What lead-time do you require to plan a wedding? A lead time of one year is ideal, but we’ve had requests to plan weddings within 5-6 months from the wedding date. When you have a shorter lead time and are planning weddings that are already booked, it can get frantic! But we take it all on board, put our processes in place and make sure each wedding goes without a hitch. The goal, as always, is to make sure everyone is having a wonderful time, and the couple enjoys their special day.

What are some of the unique things you offer? We offer wedding packages that suit a couple’s budget. But, what set us apart from the other resorts is the personalised, can-do attitude of our team. We give our brides and grooms an unparalleled Polynesian experience found nowhere else, and we do not apologise for our absolute attention to detail. Our team’s number one priority is making people happy day-in day-out. We ensure that every couple that chooses our resort enjoys a memorable wedding experience. Not only for them, but for their entire wedding group as well. That’s what makes our resort unique.

What else do couples love about your resort? The culture. We’re 100% Samoan owned. And we treat every guest as part of the family. Couples that choose our resort can soak up the rich Samoan history and way of life. Plus guests enjoy easy access to some of the island’s most popular tourist attractions and long stretches of unspoilt beaches.

What is the most satisfying part of hosting weddings? Planning the wedding and also seeing everything come together on the wedding day. From the very beginning of the wedding planning process, to when the bride and groom say their vows, we just love being there for the journey! It’s such a spine-tingling event filled with happiness and love. The most rewarding part is when we see the bride walk down the aisle and see the sheer joy on her face.

Top 3 things a planner needs to find out from a couple? 1. The wedding date is the obvious place to start! 2. Number of guests. 3. Wedding package they’ve chosen – this is important as it guides the planning phase.

What are some ways you personalise a wedding? We like to add unique touches to each wedding. For example, if a couple has a favourite colour, we can add that to their wedding theme. We also maintain close contact throughout. Many emails are exchanged, plus we schedule calls with couples to make sure we’re on top of things. And to reassure the couple that their wedding plans are in place.

Best advice you could give a couple? Just remember that it’s your wedding day and you’re marrying the love of your life. That’s all that matters. It’s also why having a wedding planner relieves a lot of that stress. Leave all the stress to the wedding planner.

Tying the knot

A couple must obtain a marriage licence when they arrive in Hawai’i. This can be done from a marriage licence agent (there are many agents on each island and they can be found online or an appointment can be arranged by your wedding coordinator). Note: you have to appear together to obtain the marriage licence. As a rule, there is no waiting period for your licence, it is granted on application. • Bride and groom need to be over the age of 18 years – otherwise a birth certificate and written consent from both parents, a legal guardian or a family court judge is required. • Proof of age – Passport, drivers licence or birth certificate. • If either partner has been married before, a divorce decree is required. • Once the marriage licence is obtained, you have 30 days to get legally married in Hawai’i.

Hawaii has all that couples need for an unforgettable romantic retreat. With so many places to see and things to do on offer on each island, it can be a challenge to squeeze everything you want in – a blessing and a curse for meticulous planners! But the beauty is that no matter what you choose to do in Hawaii, every couple will be in a state of bliss. For romance travellers, the best way to start planning your getaway is by looking into each of the four main islands – Oahu, Maui, Hawaii (The Big Islands) and Kauai. They are all brilliant in their own right, but they each have their own distinct flavour and attractions. Most couples won’t have time to visit every island, so it’s best to write a list of priorities before finding the island(s) that match.

OAHU Home to Hawaii’s capital, Honolulu, and the renowned Waikiki Beach, Oahu is a splendid combination of natural beauty and cosmopolitan sophistication – modern living meets Pacific paradise. World-famous Waikiki Beach is exactly how pop culture portrays Hawaii: sand, sun, surf, colour, waves of tanned bodies, towering high-rises, surrounded by volcanic peaks. The beach is always buzzing, but a couple will still be able to find a spot to put their towel down. Soak up the hot sun and ever-changing scene and grab a drink and a bite to eat from the countless vendors, before diving into the warm turquoise waters. Oahu also offers some of the finest dining experiences in the Pacific. Romantic meals are found with ease! The resorts are an excellent place to start. Then hit the streets, where you’ll find any number of mouthwatering restaurants. And keep your eyes peeled for hole-in-the-wall spots, you are sure to stumble across some absolute gems. Make the time to go to a luau – you will not be disappointed. It’s a traditional feast that may feature laulau (pork wrapped in leaves), poke (raw marinated fish, usually served as an appetiser), lomi salmon, and opihi and poi (taro paste). They are essentially parties, beaming with hula dancing and other traditional entertainment to sit back and admire – sometimes you can join in!

Shopping is excellent in Hawaii, particularly around Waikiki. You may want to prepare your credit card for at least a little bit of damage! Ala Moana Shopping Centre is the largest open-air shopping centre in the world. It is packed with luxury brands and department stores alike – a retail paradise. But, what if shopping’s not your thing, but your partner has a hankering to shop? Don’t worry – you won’t have to shadow them while they browse; instead, you could head up to the fourth floor for an abundance of international cuisine, a mix of local and Asian flavours, and live music. For a phenomenal view of Oahu, hit the trail up to the summit of Diamond Head mountain. It starts with a relatively light 30 minute walk, followed by numerous switchbacks as you close in on the summit. Near the end, you will pass through a military tunnel, go up a few flights of stairs and out through a bunker. Couples looking to soak up some history will want to pay a visit to Pearl Harbor – where the infamous surprise attack on the US Navy took place, dragging the superpower into World War II. Although you can visit all four of the historic sites within six hours, it is best to make a day of it – if possible – to absorb everything on offer; such as immersing yourself in the Aviation Museum and the theatre of war. You can buy a range of tour tickets at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. Since it is still an active military base, you will have to leave your bags back at the hotel or in the storage area. Movie buffs have to check out the Jurassic playground that is Kualoa Ranch, for tours of its famous film sites. But be careful, rumour has it a T-Rex is still on the loose. Even if you’re not a fan of Spielberg’s classic dinosaur film, you’ll nonetheless have a blast riding quadbikes or horses over wild terrain, or ziplining above the jungle. The perfect day out for couples craving adventure. Strap on the snorkel, Hanauma Bay awaits. It was formed within a volcanic cone and homes crystal clear water and a magnificent ecosystem, brimming with tropical fish and marine life. This is a must-do for any couple spending time on Oahu.

If you feel like escaping the crowds of Honolulu without leaving the island, take a trip to the North Shore, where 12 kilometres of sand stretch out over the still rural coast where some of the world’s biggest waves crash. The winter waves at Waimea Bay, the Banzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach can rise to seven stories high, causing the beach to shake as they smash into the sand. In summer, however, the surf is much more welcoming, and the area offers many great spots for a picnic. While you’re at it, cruise into the nearby surfing town of Haleiwa, a laid-back spot to check out art galleries, surf shops, or treat yourself to some pastries at Leonard’s bakery or cool off at Matsumoto’s Shave Ice Shop.

‘Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach Situated in the heart of Kalakaua Avenue, ‘Alohilani Resort has become one of Waikiki’s finest following a multi-million-dollar transformation. The Swell Bar and Lounge is a cool spot to have a drink, with its infinity pool, cabanas, driftwood sculptures, lanterns and glowing fire pits. And when the sun decides to call it a day, it’s time for live music and cocktails. For an intimate romantic dinner, couples will want to try one of the resort’s two spectacular Japanese restaurants – both are run by esteemed ‘Iron Chef’ Masaharu Morimoto

PLACES TO STAY Kahala Hotel and Resort The Kahala Hotel and Resort resides on a pristine white sand beach, only ten minutes from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. Swim in the stunning lagoon, meet dolphins, kick back poolside, play tennis or golf, or take a complimentary bike for a ride – there’s so much for couples to enjoy here. This romantic resort is the perfect place to celebrate your love. And they have a variety of honeymoon packages on offer. From private romantic dinners overlooking the vast blue to couple’s spa treatments, there is something bound to suit your tastes. BALDWIN BEACH PARK, MAUI ©HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY (HTA)

MAUI Known as the honeymoon island, Maui has some of the best beaches in Hawaii and the romantic resorts to match. It is the second most visited island in Hawaii after Oahu. And that’s not surprising considering its tantalising variety of activities and sights. If you have the willpower to rise before dawn, drive over (or get on a tour) to Haleakala Visitor Center for a mesmerising sight: sun rays piercing the darkness as it appears to rise out from the dormant volcano, creating a tantalising dance of light and colour. A truly romantic experience. (And not such a bad spot to propose). Ever wanted to see a whale? Whale watching season runs from December to May, and the best times to spot these magnificent creatures is from January to April – where you are likely to encounter a whale up close as thousands of them hang around there. Lahaina Harbour on Maui’s West Coast is the most popular launching spot for a range of whale watching charters. Back in the 1800s, Lahaina Town was purely a whaling settlement; now it is a busy little town with some great bars, restaurants and shops. Kaanapali Beach, which is regularly voted as one of the best beaches in the United States, is a glorious stretch of sand aligned with many fantastic resorts and apartment blocks. The Hawaiian royal family once claimed it as their own retreat. Couples who love a good ol’ roadie should head up to Hana. There are two choices for the Road to Hana. You could rent a car and drive at your own pace, perhaps staying overnight, without any other passengers. Or hop on a van tour, where you can sit back in your seat and enjoy the sights as they pass by. Whatever you decide on, you will want to bring a fully-charged camera – or a phone with a great camera – as you will want to stop and snap photos at the various scenic areas along the road. Maui’s majestic waterfalls dot the Hana Highway. The first stop on this romantic road trip is Twin Falls, where, if you can make it past the delicious fruit stand, a short trail will lead you to two falls surrounded by natural swimming pools. Further along the highway is Lower Puohokamoa Falls, an amazing sight at 200-feet tall. A beautiful lookout point is just a five-minute walk from the carpark. Near the town of Hana, hiding in lush forest along the Piwai Trail, is Makahiku Falls. The view from above the falls provides couples with a romantic photo opportunity. Maui has some brilliant surfing spots and Lahaina Reefs, on the west coast, is perfect for riders of all levels. Honolua Bay, on the other

hand, is one of the greatest surf spots in Hawaii and is best suited for veterans of the plank, boasting powerful waves and long rides. Ready to do some snorkelling? Head to Maluaka, a beach sheltered behind mountains, for one of the best spots on the island. It is also known as Turtle Town as this coastline is renowned for the abundance of Hawaiian Green sea turtles gliding in both shallow and deep waters. Beautiful coral reefs and vibrant tropical creatures reside here too.

PLACES TO STAY Kaanapali Beach Hotel Look no further for the ultimate romantic retreat and a truly authentic Hawaiian experience. The Kaanapali Beach Hotel lies on a gorgeous stretch of sand, facing the crystal-clear ocean, and boasting 11 acres of tropical gardens and an array of fantastic dining options. There’s plenty of couples’ activities on offer at Kaanapali. The Beauty of Aloha spa is guaranteed to put you into a state of relaxation. And with the beach on your doorstep, you can do anything from Hale Huakai Stand-up Paddle Boarding lessons to sunset cocktail and dinner cruises. Drink it all in and say, “Ahh-loha.”

Westin Maui Resort & Spa Located in Kaanapali, Westin Maui Resort & Spa is just minutes from white sand, Whalers Village and golf courses galore. Couples will enjoy getting pampered at the resort’s spa, taking a dip in one of five outdoor swimming pools, and indulging in the exquisite dining options at the onsite restaurants and Café.

HAWAII - THE BIG ISLAND Opposites attract. And just like soulmates, the Big Island of Hawaii is made up of two halves – one of cool lush rainforests, the other of arid volcanic landscapes – coming together to form a massive playground for romance. A couple’s love will flare and flow like lava at Volcanoes National Park, one of the most visited parks across the United States. Day hikes around the park will lead you to various volcanic summits and craters. You can hike across a blackened field of lava to see the fascinating Pu’u Loa Petroglyphs – the largest group of petroglyphs in Hawaii. Fire not only destroys but breathes new life. So, stroll along Devastation Trail to witness the rebirth of a scorched landscape, or hike through Kipukapuaulu for astounding biological diversity and leaves so green they glow. The Crater Rim Drive Tour is a phenomenal experience, where you’ll get the chance to look down into the immense Kilauea crater, which erupted in 2018 with such force that it could have been mistaken for the end of days! Jagger Museum is a must-visit if you want to learn more about this brutal yet beautiful volcano. For an awe-inspiring view, jump on a helicopter tour. Couples will probably feel like cooling off after a day of touring fiery landscapes. Luckily, on Big Island you can go from flowing lava to flowing water, just like that. For some of the most pristine and picturesque waterfalls in the Pacific, couples can check out Peepe Falls, Rainbow Falls and

Waiale Falls. The biggest of the bunch is Waihilau Falls, where freshwater cascades down from 700 metres high. Giddy up, you’re in cowboy country now. Saddle up at Kalua Ranch and ride horseback through green forests and hills and down to freshwater streams, admiring the island’s stunning scenery. Drive west to Kona Coast where you will stumble across the quaint town of Holualoa, which is famous for its Kona coffee. Couples can enjoy a cup of joe and tour the mill to see where the magic happens.

PLACES TO STAY Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu Situated on the Kona Coast surrounded by white sand beaches and volcanic landscapes, this high-quality resort has everything couples need for an idyllic romantic getaway. KAUA’I Couples seeking a chilled-out escape amongst nature’s finest offerings will want to head to the island of Kaua’i. It is the oldest, smallest and least developed of the major islands, bursting with untouched beauty that makes for some of the most dramatic scenery in Hawaii. Films such as Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean borrowed this backdrop to help create some memorable cinema scenes. The fact that only around 10 percent of the island is accessible by car is one reason the island retains its magic. Instead of being jammed with cars and buses, visitors will have to take it slow and soak up all the land has to offer through more straightforward means such as hiking, biking and kayaking. The Kalalau Trail, which runs along the Napali Coast for 18 kilometres, is a spectacular hike for fit couples looking to test themselves. It is one of the most famous treks in the United States due to the amazing sights dotted along the path; from Ke’e Beach, through dense green valleys, across cliffs overlooking the pacific, to Kalalau Valley. You may not be able to get far driving a car, but you can go anywhere in Kauai with a helicopter! Couples must take an aerial tour of the island to soak up all its majesty. Blue Hawaiian Helicopters is one such company that can take couples to cloud nine, where you will see all the main sights – Waimea Canyon, Napali Coast, Bali Hai Cliffs, Hanalei Bay and Mount Waialeale – in around 50 minutes.

PLACES TO STAY Princeville Resort Sitting above the picturesque Hanalei Bay, Princeville Resort is a luxurious place for couples to retreat to. Relax on the private beach and go swimming in the sapphire waters, before letting your personal butler treat you to the five-star luxuries on offer. There is also a water sports centre and a 5,000 square foot infinity pool, and spectacular restaurants, bars and Cafés that serve delectable food and beverages.
