WIN 5 NIGHTS

at Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Spa & Golf Resort

Contents

Winter is nice…in small doses. Winter in New Zealand has its good points. You can stoke up the log burner and enjoy a roaring fire. You can switch on an electric blanket and slide into a toasty bed. You can break out your puffer jacket and take a walk on a crisp, clear day.

New Caledonia...............................................4

The problem is, winter seems to drag on just a bit too long. Which is why the end of August is such a good time to head for the islands. We managed just that, taking the family on a four-night getaway to New Caledonia’s Sheraton Deva Spa & Golf Resort. What an enjoyable experience.

Fiji........................................................................16

And don’t forget to enter this issue’s competition to go into the draw to Win 5 nights at the resort. In this issue we also feature Taveuni. Fiji’s Garden Island is another peaceful place to escape the chills of a Kiwi winter.

Visitors to New Caledonia tend to spend most, if not all of their time in Noumea. But not all roads lead to that cosmopolitan city-by-the-sea. Turn left out of the airport (instead of right), drive north for 90 minutes and you’ll come to the serene Deva Domain – home of the Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Spa & Golf Resort. In this family we’re used to getting up at the crack of dawn, making our way to the airport and hopping on an early flight to the islands. When you’re travelling with three children, it can be a bit hectic loading them up while they’re still half asleep. And you are too! On this New Caledonian family adventure, our morning start was very dignified, thanks to Aircalin's easy 1pm departure. Which meant no alarm setting and no rush. The leisurely start set the tone, and I’m happy to say that it stayed that way. Our destination was the Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Spa & Golf Resort. The resort is reached by taking the road north of Tontouta International Airport. Apart from passing through a few small villages, the drive takes you through a picturesque countryside of steep mountains, grassy fields, meandering streams and blue ocean vistas. The Deva Domain runs along the coast near the small town of Bourail. With 8000 hectares of wide open spaces, 13 kilometres of white sand beach, hiking trails and biking trails, the Deva Domain has long been enjoyed by local residents. I can imagine that developing a resort in this untouched wilderness was questioned by a few. But with a clever design that’s kept much of the natural environment in its original form, the Sheraton Deva fits into its surroundings like it’s been there all along.

At one with nature When you visit the Pacific Islands, you can’t help being drawn to the water. The Sheraton Deva experience is no different. New Caledonia is home to one of the world’s largest tropical lagoons, and its standing prompted UNESCO to name it as a World Heritage Site. In some parts of New Caledonia, the reef sits 18 kilometres from the coast. Off Sheraton Deva, the reef is just 2 kilometres away. This proximity to the land makes the lagoon waters less prone to currents and perfect for water-based activities like stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking and sailing. And the resort has all this equipment lined up and ready for resort guests to enjoy at their leisure. The calm, glassy mornings are particularly good for paddling out past the sea grass and across to coral reef, where you can spot schools of fish going about their day. The shallow waters are also ideal for kitesurfers, especially those who are still learning their craft, ie, if you fall off, it’s a lot easier relaunching from waist to shoulder-deep water.

Underwater adventures On the action on top of the water is matched by the action under the water. The man to lead the way is Alan Choupeau who runs a glass-bottom boat tour from Sheraton Deva. I’ve been on quite a few glass-bottom boat tours over the years, and most have been disappointing. This experience was a very pleasant surprise. Alan swapped the chilly climes of northwestern France for New Caledonia 16 years ago. He spent 10 years in Noumea, where he owned and operated a kitesurfing school, before selling, and moving up the coast to start this glass-bottom boat tour.

What a view. The reward for hiking Deva Domain

“First we’ll go and see the turtles,” he said with complete confidence. It was clear he knows these waters like the back of his hand, because within a few minutes we’re hovering over massive green turtles. “That one’s around 35 years old and weighs well over 100 kilos.” I think he knows each one personally. Next stop is a section of reef with five buoys that mark different underwater features – an underwater trail for snorkelers to follow. Alan gives us a talk about the reef ecosystem and then it’s in the water with snorkel, flippers and a waterproof reef guide (so you can read about different underwater features as you go). The highlight turned out to be snorkeling back and forth with a school of sizeable groper and snapper, some longer than your arm.

18 holes in heaven Gentle rolling countryside surrounds the resort, and it provided the perfect canvas for the Dye Group to design a par 72 championship golf course. Indeed, the world-famous golf course architects have crafted what is easily one of the South Pacific’s best golf experiences. The course is in immaculate condition. The fairways are like carpet and the greens are true. When you’re playing a round, you’ll notice a small army of greenkeepers keeping it that way. Plus they’re a respectful bunch. On more than one occasion the greenkeepers stopped and turned off their mower when I came near - to make sure I could concentrate on the shot at hand. Sometimes it helped, sometimes it didn’t!

At the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the lagoon, resort, golf course and the rest of the domain. The track forms part of a circuit that takes in two more peaks, before looping back to the starting point. If you want to explore more tracks within the domain, the resort's concierge can point you in the right direction. And don’t forget there are plenty of mountain bike trails too – best cycled in cool, early morning temperatures.

Cool for kids As any mum or dad will tell, a good family holiday means keeping the kids occupied! On this trip, it wasn’t a problem. The resort’s pool was a winner. The kids could splash away and yahoo to their heart's content. It was also a novelty for these Kiwi kids to be around local French speaking kids. The girls quickly became mates with a couple of girls from Noumea and one from the Seychelles. Sheraton Deva also has a fantastic Kids Club. Free for resort guests, the centre is open seven days a week from around 7am to 5pm. It’s a clean, welldesigned space with loads of playthings. Our two girls spent half an afternoon at the Kid’s Club and had a ball. The supervisors were loads of fun and again, the girls got another chance to mix with kids from a different culture. On top of the complimentary Kid’s Club facility, the resort offers babysitting services – just in case mum and dad need some me time.

Spa excellence

If you’re playing on a sunny day, hiring a cart will save you some energy and provide some shade. Otherwise, it’s a very pleasant walk. The pro-shop located in the resort foyer has everything you need, including some top-of-the-line Titleist hire clubs. And the driving range, putting green and chipping areas are well set-up for pre-round practice. If you’re looking for a premium golf getaway in a unique location, you couldn’t ask for more.

Staying active is easy at the Sheraton Deva. But they’ve also mastered the art of relaxation. And chill HQ is the resort’s serene Deep Water Spa and Wellness Centre. Set amongst the trees in a quiet corner of the resort, the Deep Water Spa is the kind of place you could happily spend all day. In fact, they’ve got a sleeping room purpose-built for doing just that. The menu of treatments is extensive. Facials, scrubs, water massages, nail treatments and a whole lot more. There are two glorious ways to detox. A hammam (or steam room) with dimmed lights and stars that twinkle from the ceiling. And a unique sauna with two large windows that let you look out towards the trees, as you're sweating away the bad stuff. No visit to Sheraton Deva is complete without a treatment at the Deep Water Spa. And if you can manage it, have two.

Take a hike

Fun for all

The Deva Domain is home to some of New Caledonia’s best hikes and they’re all within easy access of Sheraton Deva. The closest circuit of tracks is right across the road from the resort’s front gate. For an amazing view, take the well-maintained track up the hill that sits directly behind the resort. The 30-minute climb is worth the effort. And anyone can do it. Our 11-year-old boy and five-year-old girl made the summit with relative ease.

You know you’re having a nice family holiday when the kids say “We don’t want to go home.” They loved every minute of it, and so did we. The peaceful setting and chilled-out resort atmosphere was balanced out with a variety of fun activities. Experiencing another part of New Caledonia added a different dimension to the trip, as did the French flavour. Sheraton Deva has become a new family favourite and we’ll be back.

Being relatively flat, the architects have tested Deva golfers by strategically placing fairway bunkers that gobble up errant tee shots. And they’ve protected each green with a network of bunkers too. If you go in the rough, don’t expect to find your ball – although you’ll probably find someone else’s!

New Caledonia Tourism New Caledonia is renowned for its magical mix of French sophistication and Melanesian traditions. What’s less well known is the wonderful diversity that's on offer. When it comes to planning a trip, most people tend to stay in Noumea. Which is understandable, given its vast array of eateries, shopping and wonderful beaches. However, there is so much more to see and do outside the cosmopolitan capital. Sheraton Deva in the Bourail region is one of the wonderful experiences in the regions. But then you can add in the Loyalty Islands, West Coast, East Coast and Great South. In New Caledonia the options are virtually endless.

Taveuni

Fiji’s garden paradise By Matt Taylor

Garden Island Resort - Rainbowreef ©adamwalters.com

As a rule, the further you go from the well-worn tourist trail, the more relaxed and more authentic your travel experience will be. It’s just a matter of making the effort to reap the rewards. In the South Pacific, the Fijian island of Taveuni is one of those places that flies under the radar. Yes, it’s a little off the beaten track and requires a connecting 90-minute flight from Nadi. But as any visitor will tell you, taking a few more hours is a small price to pay for reaching paradise.

Nature’s finest gardens Taveuni is called the "garden island, " and it’s easy for visitors to see why. The island's 44,500 hectares are blanketed in lush, virgin rainforest that is bursting with flora and fauna. For ecolovers, Taveuni is a dream come true. In fact, Bouma National Heritage Park takes up almost one-third of the entire island. Hiking is a real highlight. The nature trails feel like something out of Jurassic Park. And birdwatchers can view kula lorikeets, silktails, orange doves and 100 other bird species that are lucky enough to call this natural sanctuary home.

Tavoro Waterfalls Tavenui can get hot and steamy, and there’s no better way to cool down than by taking a hike through thick green jungle to reach the Tavoro Waterfalls. There are three in total. The first waterfall is an easy walk from the visitor's centre. If you pack a lunch, you can enjoy the picnic area that’s set up there. Thirty minutes further on you’ll find the second waterfall (with fewer people) and another 20 minutes further you’ll find the third waterfall (with fewer people still). In short, this excursion is a Taveuni must.

Diver's delight Not all the amazing sights happen on land. The waters off Taveuni are considered world-class marine environments. Thanks to the Tongan trench, nutrients flow into these waters, creating an extremely rich underwater eco-system that is renowned for its colourful soft coral and a multitude of tropical fish. Highlights include the Vuna Reef that sits off Taveuni’s southern tip. And the aptly named Rainbow Reef, which is regarded as one of the world’s best sites for soft coral and a huge variety of fish species. If you're a diver, plenty of operators can look after your equipment needs and take you to the best spots.

Once were warriors It’s hard to imagine now, but Taveuni was the site of one of Fiji’s most famous battles. In the 1860s, a large force of Tongan invaders was defeated by Taveuni warriors who fought from their war canoes. According to local lore, the battle lasted a week and left only 46 Tongan survivors. It's also said that local Catholic priests gave paramount chief Ratu Golea a small cross before the battle. The priests told Ratu that the cross would be his weapon. After the victory, Ratu asked if he and his men could be received into the Catholic Church – they were, and Ratu’s cross lies in the parish church at Wairiki, where people can still view it today.

Options are endless – from exploring the island with jet skis, swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, paddle boarding – guests can even join their hosts, the resort’s team of Nanuku Buddies in helping to catch and prepare the fresh fish, bamboo-pole cooked prawns and traditional kokoda served for dinner. Less strenuous activities include palm-frond hat and basket weaving, coconut scraping, searching for the elusive Hawksbeak turtles which inhabit the island – or simply relaxing. As the sun sets and the kalokalo (stars) begin to emerge, the Buddies entertain guests with traditional songs and the sharing of centuries-old legends of Fiji. Once dinner and the entertainment have concluded the crew retire to the nearby-moored Nanuku 1 for the evening offering guests perfect privacy for the night – but not before leaving a survival kit, mobile phone and a Tiki torch pathway to a discreetly located and hurricane lamp-lit outhouse. For those who wish to sleep undercover, weather-proof tents are an option but, according to general manager, Sascha Hemmann, most guests prefer to sleep under the kalokalo in comfortable hammocks. A highlight of the following morning is a personally cooked breakfast of pancakes, bacon and eggs, juices and fresh-brewed coffee and tea, after which guests return to the resort. Available daily, the Ki na kalokalo private island camping experience is priced from FJD4000* based on four persons. Pricing per additional person is FJD600*. Pacific Harbour is renowned for its star-lit night skies, the calm waters of Beqa Lagoon forming a sky-tohorizon reflecting mirror earning the region its pathway to the stars title.

Fishing bonanza at Volivoli After sustaining extensive damage during tropical cyclone Winston in February 2016, Volivoli Beach Resort reopened as a premium boutique resort for the Suncoast. A couple of things didn’t change however. First, the personal touch that guests expect from this family-owned and operated resort. And second, the amazing fishing in the world-famous Bligh Waters that sit off the coast. Recently the resort hosted keen fishermen from New Zealand, Australia and Taiwan. And the fishing enthusiasts were treated to a healthy haul of sailfish, mahimahi, spanish mackerel, perch, diamond trevally and barracuda! As a keen fishing family, Volivoli owners, the Darlings, have a dedicated diving and fishing boat fleet based at the resort. Four-hour, half-day and full-day charters are available and they include all fishing equipment hire.

Reminder about Cook Islands Visitor’s licences The Cook Islands Police would like to remind visitors that they must obtain a Visitor’s Licence in order to ride a scooter or motorcycle in the Cook Islands, if they do not have a full driver’s licence from their country of origin. In order to obtain this licence, the visitor must visit the National Police Headquarters in Avarua and then must pass two tests. The first phase of testing is a theory test and costs $10 to sit. From here they can move onto the practical test which is also $10. The cost of the actual licence itself costs an additional $20, making the total cost of the process $40. Visitors are also reminded that wearing a helmet is compulsory for non-residents of the Cook Islands and for everyone between the ages of 16 and 25, rider or passenger.

The newest ocean pearl: Moana Restaurant and Bar Sands Restaurant on Rarotonga’s southern coast has been renamed and rebranded to become Moana Restaurant and Bar, a perfect fit for its namesake and location, the Moana Sands Hotel. The kitchen of Rarotonga’s newest eatery is led by Jasmine Kee, the head chef. Kee is known for her simple but refined cooking style, specialising in Pacific cuisine. Moana has its heart set on incorporating local produce within its menu, with an additional strong focus on seafood. Kee’s introductory menu will be updated to customer’s tastes in time. Looking towards the future, Moana Restaurant and Bar has plans to become a boutique destination venue, with Manager Johan Ellis stating: “We will offer a fun vibe for family and friends in the main restaurant area, as well as a ‘romance couples-only’ destination in the beautiful beachfront dining pavilion.” Moana Restaurant and Bar will be welcoming guests for breakfast from 8am, lunch from 11am and dinner from 5pm. The restaurant's bar will be open on two shifts, between 7-3pm and 3-10pm.

New look for Sunset Guests visiting the Sunset Resort in Rarotonga will be greeted by their friendly staff in a brand new uniform, to truly represent the colourful Cook Island culture. Going into their seventh year managing the resort, Tim and Colleen Darby continue to upgrade and provide a modern twist on a Pacific Island theme. “When we upgraded all of the art work in the rooms last year we chose well-known local artist Kay George. We love the modern mixed media that Kay uses in all her art,” says Colleen. “When it was time to update our staff uniforms we had Kay design a print in the Sunset resort colours. Each uniform is hand-printed and individual while still remaining true to Cook Island design. We like the tailored individuality that came with each uniform giving our staff that unique feel.” Sunset continues to grow from strength to strength in popularity with international guests visiting the Island of Rarotonga. This popular resort provides guests with a “big little resort” feel providing self-contained apartment style accommodation set on the pristine beach of Arorangi offering year-round tropical sunsets.

Enhancements underway for Little Polynesian Resort Projects to enhance the Little Polynesian Resort in Rarotonga after its integration into the Pacific Resort Hotel Group (PRHG) have been underway, with exciting developments and additions across the resort. With guidance from Corporate Executive Chef, Tim Tierney, the restaurant and bar has a new menu and wine list and the resort now defines its cuisine style as “serving a fusion of classic fare with Polynesian cuisine featuring fresh seafood and local Cook Islandgrown products”. Little Polynesian Resort has also introduced some refreshing breakfast additions, including gluten free options, pastries, daily freshly made juices and a range of house made organic gluten-free light grain cereals. The first major refurbishment project was in full swing from the end of January, which will see the entire property’s roofs re-thatched with Palmex, a synthetic eco-friendly palm leaf tropical thatch. There has also been a strong focus on landscaping the property, with Grounds Manager, Blair Wilson, leading the early phase of establishing and consolidating the landscaping project. Wilson, an expert in his field, also maintains the beautiful 2.5 hectares gardens and grounds at Pacific Resort Rarotonga. PRHG is excited about the projects in the pipeline for Little Polynesian Resort and will continue making enhancements to the property to ensure it upholds the high standards after the resort’s acceptance into one of the world’s most exclusive, independent and finest luxury hotel brands – Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) in early 2017.

Live like a local on Mitiaro Island A unique, home-stay experience is on offer on Mitiaro Island, for visitors looking for a true taste of island life. Over the last couple of years Cook Islands Tours has helped introduce the island of Mitiaro as an extension of a visitor’s Cook Islands experience, however it was the expressed wish of the island’s people to have a low key, unobtrusive tourist industry that will directly benefit its people. In accordance to this wish, a unique type of home-stay was designed, giving visitors and hosts alike, the most comfortable experience on the island. So far, three families have built traditional purpose-built thatched huts for three host families to cater for visitors. Mike Geary from Eye 4 Travel says that it gives the travellers an opportunity to live the life of a local and to become part of the island family from the time they arrive at Mitiaro. Travellers will experience the simple pleasures of life in traditional style accommodation. The island, besides it’s unique and laid back lifestyle, also has beautiful caves and pools, plus many other features to keep tourists occupied. Mitiaro is a lifestyle experience holiday which you can have snippets of in just a few days or treat yourself to a total getaway of a week or more. Cook Islands Tours offer three night packages from only $399 per person share twin, which includes three nights accommodation in traditional huts with private facilities, return airport transfers on Mitiaro and three meals a day. Airfares from Rarotonga to Mitiaro are additional, and operated by Air Rarotonga.

Visit Clamentine, the giant clam Get the snorkels out because a trip to Aitutaki Lagoon isn’t complete without a visit to Clamentine, a giant clam, as part of the Tamanu snorkelling trail. Marked by a nearby buoy, Clamentine is only 150 metres from the shore and nestled in around 1.5 metres of water. She’s a favourite with visitors to Tamanu Beach Resort. Clamentine was given her name by some fervent Californian visitors who named her after a famous personality from San Francisco. Tamanu Beach Resort started planting coral and small clam "paua" more than 12 years ago in various parts of the Aitutaki lagoon. Some of this coral growth has mushroomed into significant coral heads or "bombies" today. This is now being used as the root stock for three coral gardens being planted in front of the resort. Once these coral "starters" are of adequate size, visitors will be able to "plant" these coral reef starters along the Tamanu snorkelling trail.

Amaia Spa gives for a great cause Over the years we’ve seen a number of heart-warming examples of generosity from hotels, resorts and other travel-related businesses. And we’re glad to report on another one. During the month of October, Scenic Hotel Tonga’s Amaia Luxury Spa will be donating 10 percent of revenue to The Tongan Breast Cancer Society as part of breast cancer awareness month. Plus the resort will host a 100 person luncheon on October 14 to help raise more awareness and support for the charity. Well done Scenic Hotel Tonga.

See the South Pacific Stonehenge It’s estimated that Tonga was settled around 3000 years ago, making it home to one of the earliest Polynesian settlements. On the main island of Tongatapu, visitors can view an interesting piece of history – the mysterious stone structure known as the Ha’amonga’a Maui. Built from three huge pieces of limestone which were mined from what is now the French territory of Wallis and Futuna, this edifice is a smaller version of Britain’s Stonehenge. Nobody can be sure why it was built, however, some think it may have been used as a celestial calendar. Whatever the reason, it’s well worth seeing.

Niue

Sunday Fun-day An authentic Niuean banquet got the seal of approval from renowned chef Ray McVinnie who recently visited Humu Island Retreat. Diners can enjoy a three-course meal of Niuean delicacies and dishes every Sunday, with some food being sourced from the organic garden grown by owner Saluma Hunt. If you’re a little scared to try real island cuisine, don’t fret! In a recent article written for Bite magazine, Ray talks about his initial apprehension which turned into appreciation for Niuean food and chefs. Takihi (the national dish of Niue), coconut crab, roasted local pork, nuku (local fernheads) and baked corned beef were a few dishes he got to try during his time at Humu Island Retreat. The Sunday Niuean Banquet runs from 12-3pm and bookings are a must.

Another year of independence added Both the Niuean and New Zealand flag will fly high on October 20 at the 43rd Constitutional celebration event. To honour 43 years of independence, the annual flag-raising ceremony will take place with other local activities including the annual vaka race, which at times includes a novelty section for visiting friends and expatriates.

Niue meets Yoga Niue will be welcoming some adventurous yogis to its first organised yoga retreat this Labour Weekend. Relaxing and exploring are at the top of the to-do list, with daily yoga sessions, nutrition and wellbeing workshops, and island sightseeing all part of the five-day itinerary. Founder of Wellness Retreats NZ and yoga teacher Melissa Carroll will be teaming up with nutritionist Kaytee Boyd to run the event. While yoga retreats aren’t very common in the South Pacific, Niue Tourism Director of Marketing Felicity Bollen hopes this is the first of many to come.

Award-winning chef Peter Gordon is spicing things up in Niue this September with a five-day food fiesta. Savour Niue is proving to be a big hit, with all packages now sold out for the event which runs from September 29 to October 3. Participants will be able to enjoy dinners prepared by Gordon and chefs from The Sugar Olivier Poulard Club, have a chance to explore the island’s food resources, and indulge in a Niuean traditional feast hosted by Hakupu Atua Village. While the tour plan includes a trip to one of Niue’s vanilla plantations, the island’s honey producer and one of its hydroponic growing operations, there’s still some extra time for guests to explore Niue’s many scenic attractions. Peter, now based in London, is well known as the “godfather” of fusion cuisine and Niue Tourism Director of Marketing, Felicity Bollen, says the islanders are delighted that a chef of Peter’s international calibre is making the long journey to Niue and she is very excited to welcome him to the beautiful island for the first time.

“This type of activity aligns to our brand strategy of celebrating our beautiful natural environment and all the peace and harmony it has to offer,” she says.

Mobile coffee a hit A mobile coffee stand operated by the Halatau family in Hakupu is proving to be a success in popular spots around Niue Island. The home-grown stand is a converted ute and one of the first mobile coffee and snack bars the island has seen. Niue Tourism Director of Marketing Felicity Bollen says it’s great to see this type of entrepreneurship happening. “I really think they’re onto something here,” she says. “Good on them for seeing an opportunity and taking it.”

Skink cause for celebration Excitement is in the air in Niue following the discovery of a Niuean skink thought to have been extinct. Tourist Cindy Pannam sent a photo of a large skink she saw to Niue’s Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) after hearing that no trace of the Emoia Lawesi could be found on the island. A recent reptile survey conducted by the ministry and experts from the United States Geological Survey and Villanova University had concluded that the olive small-scaled skink had died out. But Ridge to Reef (R2R) Technical Officer Fiafia Rex set up traps and was able to capture three animals after the photo was received. The next steps for the Niue R2R project will be to look at the size of the Emoia Lawesi population and find the best way to protect the skinks. The project is a fiveyear initiative being delivered by the MNR, with the United Nations Development Programme and principal funder the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Tangalooma Island Resort leads the way in sustainability Tangalooma Island Resort has recently achieved Certified Silver status through EarthCheck, the world's leading environmental management and professional services group for the travel and tourism industry. The certification has come after months of analysis from the resort’s in-house Green Team, a group of hand-picked resort staff committed to limiting the impact resort operations have on the environment. Tangalooma Island Resort Environmental Manager, Penny Limbach, says the Green Team played a vital role in identifying the priorities of the resort to achieve EarthCheck’s Silver accreditation. “From developing policies and refining processes and procedures, to reducing the resort’s carbon footprint, we have been able to identify where our strengths and weaknesses le, and implement an action plan to ensure best outcomes for the environment, and our community” Ms Limbach says. This achievement further reinforces the resort’s positioning as a leader in eco-tourism experiences.

Exclusive Expeditions from Lizard Island Lizard Island has announced it will host expeditions featuring scientists from the Australian Museum, offering guests the chance to explore parts of the Great Barrier Reef not usually accessible by guests. Two expeditions will take place later this year and will educate and inform guests about the world heritage listed site, in one of the best locations in the world – Lizard Island. The island is the premium destination on the Great Barrier Reef, and one of the only places where visitors step off the sand and right into one of the best marine environments in the world, making it the ideal site for these exclusive expeditions to take place. The expedition has been created by the island, the Lizard Island Research Station and the Australian Museum and gives guests the opportunity to learn about environmental challenges the reef faces, alongside unprecedented access to parts of the reef. Emilio Fortini, Lizard Island’s General Manager, says the expeditions will enable guests to explore the marine and natural environment of Lizard Island while at the same time relaxing in the privacy and tranquility. “We’re really excited about the opportunity to host these expeditions and give our guests exclusive interactions with experts from the Research Station and Australian Museum,” said Mr Fortini.

Turtle Time on Lady Elliot Island Located at the southern tip of the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, Lady Elliot Island sits within a sanctuary that’s home to over 1200 species of marine life. Of all the wonderful creatures on display, turtles are a true highlight. On Lady Elliot Island there are two types of nesting turtles (Green and Loggerhead Turtles) and between November and March each year these turtles come ashore to nest and lay their eggs. They can nest up to nine times in one season, laying between 80 and 120 eggs per clutch. At the end of nesting season (February to April), thousands of baby turtles push through their sand nests on their way to the ocean! This wonder of nature occurs only metres from the resort beach balconies and can be observed at close quarters by all. If you’re planning on visiting Lady Elliot Island, make sure you can experience the magic of turtle season!

Guests on the expeditions will learn from top experts including Directors from Lizard Island Research Station Directors Dr Anne Hoggart AM and Dr Lyle Vail AM, the Australian Museum’s senior research fellow Dr Penny Berents, Lizard Island’s own Naturalist Ben Carroll and visiting scientists from around the world. The expeditions take place from mid-late November with prices starting from $6710 per person, twin-share and only 12 places are available on each trip.

Green Island Resort goes solar powered The Quicksilver Group, owners of Green Island Resort, are again aiming to reduce their impact on the environment, by enhancing an alternative source of power for the resort. With limited suitable roof space due to the dense tree coverage, the company installed a 126 panel solarpowered system on top of the powerhouse located at Green Island. As a result, the company has further reduced its carbon offset. According to the local supplier of the system, Hush Energy, Quicksilver Group has achieved a carbon offset of 2.22 tonnes over the past month, which is equivalent to saving 57 trees. The collection of panels is currently generating enough energy to generate roughly 12 percent of the power needed for the resort. Well done!

Solomon Airlines and Air Kiribati join forces

June visitors jump 29 per cent

Solomon Airlines and Air Kiribati have commenced a new service linking Brisbane with Tarawa via Honiara. The service began August 30 ex-Brisbane every Wednesday and ex-Tarawa every Thursday. Welcoming the commencement of the service, Solomon Airlines’ CEO, Brett Gebers underlined the importance of the aviation partnership as a catalyst for both nations’ economic development. “This service is more than just a link between two nations – it also represents an avenue for both nations to grow and prosper as we walk forward together,” he said. The new Tarawa service is the latest in a series of major developments taking place within the last 18 months, including the signing of a watershed codeshare agreement with Qantas Airways, a Memorandum of Understanding with fellow Melanesian airline Air Niugini and Air Vanuatu and a Port Moresby – Port Vila – Honiara codeshare.

Great news for the Solomon Islands. Official figures show a total of 2561 international visitors recorded for the month of June. This represents a 29.1 percent increase over the 1984 tally achieved for the corresponding month in 2016. Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau (SIVB) CEO, Josefa ‘Jo’ Tuamoto said the Q2 result was a vast improvement over a sluggish Q1 performance, which saw figures for the period dip by 3.1 percent compared to Q1 2016. Mr Tuamoto said he was confident of an even stronger result across Q3, the result, he said, guaranteed to be lifted by the huge influx of visitors - predominantly American, Australian, New Zealand and Japanese attending the recent 75th anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal and related commemorative services across the archipelago.

Tahiti

Eat, drink and be merry at Hilton Moorea The Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa has welcomed a new Executive Chef to take charge of the cuisine, while also inviting guests to their bar to enjoy the longest Happy Hour on the island.

UNESCO site on Raiatea The Taputapuatea Marae on the island of Raiatea has been recognised as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Raiatea is a destination renowned for its idyllic landscapes, and above all the vibrant culture that colours everyday life and the new recognition is a source of pride for the local community and the Polynesian people. This acknowledgement also creates an extraordinary opportunity to increase the visibility of the Islands of Tahiti across the globe.

The Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa’s new Executive Chef, Jérôme Lehoux, began on April 1 and accompanied with his arrival was also a brand new menu to Arii Vahine Restaurant. Jérôme Lehoux comes with years of experience, having worked in various restaurants throughout Paris, St-Tropez, Courchevel and St-Barthélémy before most recently putting his talents to work at St. Regis Bora Bora. But before heading to the Arii Vahine Restaurant to eat, you may want to take advantage of Moorea’s longest Happy Hour at the Eimeo Bar. From 4pm to 7pm you can enjoy their wide variety of cocktails and virgin cocktails and on Thursday evenings enjoy the live sounds of the jazz trio Marajazz.

The Taputapuatea Marae was built by the ancestral Polynesians, who arranged the hundreds of stones which they believed to hold mana – a source of power and spiritual strength. Those looking for history and a rich cultural experience will enjoy a visit to this sacred site, where ceremonies were performed prior to the arrival of European missionaries.

Billabong Pro makes waves in Tahiti

Sail into Marquesas Tahitian freighter cruise line Aranui Cruises will include a call to the spectacular Marquesas Festival in its final voyage of the year. The festival is held every two years in the far-flung Marquesas Islands, the northernmost of Tahiti’s five archipelagoes, alternating between a mini-festival and the main arts festival. The 2017 mini-festival will be a four-day extravaganza of Polynesian music and dance from December 18 to 21, at Tahuata, the smallest of the inhabited Marquesas Islands. To coincide with the biennial event, Aranui Cruises’ modern freighter ship Aranui 5 will make an extended visit to Tahuata on December 20, allowing guests to participate in a community feast and enjoy the cultural festivities well into the night.

One year out from its 20th anniversary, the Billabong Pro surf competition at Teahupo’o was underway once again from August 11. Australian surfer Julian Wilson was named the 2017 champion, beating Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina in an impressive comeback. The competition has taken place every year from 1999 in Teahupo’o, a village on the island of Tahiti.

Whale watching season in Tahiti Now is the perfect opportunity to go whale watching in the Islands of Tahiti. Humpback whales spend five months around the Islands of Tahiti to breed and give birth to their calves They arrive between the end of June and July and leave for the cooler Antarctic waters in late October. The majestic whales can be spotted off the coast of most islands, but some locations are more organised than others for whale watching. On Tahiti you can spot whales from the shore, such as from Pointe des Pêcheurs in the morning, and diving clubs organise whale watching excursions. On Moorea, many excursions are available, with some boats having glass bottoms so you can also enjoy the marine life below, such as the stingrays, reef sharks and dolphins. Rurutu is famous for whale watching. As Rurutu has no lagoons, the whales come close to the shore and observation points have been set up along the coastal road. A number of rules must be observed while watching the whales, so be sure to familiarise yourself with them in order to help preserve The Islands of Tahiti’s Marine Mammal Sanctuary.

Exclusivity for cruise ship packages

Spot whales in American Samoa

When a cruise ship is in Port Pago Pago, Tisa's Barefoot Bar and Alega Beach & Marine Preserve will only be open to guests who purchase their new pre-paid cruise ship day package.

Whale season in American Samoa has begun! The whale watching season begins in July and can last as late as December, with September and October being its peak months. The first whale sighting for 2017 was in early July off the coast of Amanave in the Western District of Tutuila.

The deal includes a three-hour tour around Tutuila guided by Tisa with three photo opportunity stops before arriving at Alega Bay. Waiting for guests is an authentic Samoan feast and beverages prepared in a stone-fired umu earth oven with only the freshest food available, locally grown and free of chemicals.

These extraordinary mammals migrate north to the warm waters of American Samoa once a year to breed in their protected bays such as Fagatele, Fagasa, Fagalua, and Poloa. While you’re out enjoying the island, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for these seasonal visitors.

Guests will also enjoy exclusive access and use of the private beach with an on-duty lifeguard with the opportunity to explore the Alega Beach and marine preserve. The package costs $135 per person and for those just wanting the island feast and experience the beach and Reserve (no transport or tour included) cost is $75pp. Guests numbers will be limited to 60 people to ensure the impact on the Alega Bay environment is low impact and does not impede on the reserve's eco-system.

Day trips to American Samoa Visitors to Samoa now have an option to venture further afield, with a day trip to American Samoa. With just a short 35 minute flight on Polynesian Airlines between the two islands, the day trip is a great way for people to get an overview of what American Samoa has to offer.
