The great resorts make it hard for you to leave. Think plush rooms with style, space and every mod con at your fingertips. Indoor luxury flows into outdoor lounging and panoramic views. First-class personal service is matched by quality cuisine. Indulgent spa treatments. Infinity pools. Gyms. Shops. The list goes on and on. As lovely as it is, there’s one problem with staying in this blissful state of comfort. You miss out on everything the lives and breathes ‘outside’. I’ll put my hand up. Our family has been guilty of the ‘fly and flop’ holiday. But on our recent trip to Vanuatu, we made a concerted effort to leave the comfort zone. And we loved every minute of it. Sitting under waterfalls. Swinging off ropes. Snorkelling in secret hideaways. Sampling new flavours. Seeing new sights. It was one of our best Pacific getaways and I hope you enjoy the read, along with all our regular industry updates.

In Vanuatu, the laid back living soon rubs off visitors. Which is why this destination is perfect for families who want a temporary escape from their busy schedules. It’s a place that encourages fun, laughter and getting out amongst stunning natural wonders. On the flight up to Vanuatu I sat next to a man from Wellington. He was in his mid 40s, but as a kid, he and his family spent a lot of time sailing through the Pacific Islands. They’d visited Vanuatu on numerous occasions. He hadn’t been back since, but he still remembered the islands well. And what stood out was its simplicity and charm. “It was very rustic,” he said. I'd never heard Vanuatu described like that before, but it’s so true. Vanuatu is a beautiful place where people live a simple life. No stress, no rush and no pressure to buy the material things that most ‘Westerners’ seem to aspire to. It makes for a refreshing change and provides the chance to recharge in true Pacific style.
First port of call. Sitting on the island of Efate, Port Vila is home to the Nation’s international airport, which makes this charming town the first stop for visitors. It’s a bustling hub that lies around a beautiful, natural harbour. Steep hillsides offer panoramic views and the streets are always abuzz with locals going about their day. And tourists roam the local cafés, bars, restaurants and shops. Port Vila is no retail mecca, but the shops sell everything from surfwear to local art and crafts and duty free goods. (And anyway, there are many better things to do than shop.) If you require some basic supplies, there are plenty of convenience stores in town, plus there’s a ‘proper’ supermarket selling many of the brands you have back home. Tip: those who have booked self-contained accommodation often call in here to stock up on fruit, snacks, water and beer!
Fresh from the farm. If you head along the main street of Port Vila, you can’t miss the bustling produce market. This local landmark is a brilliant stop for families. It's packed full of vendors who come from far and wide to sell their fresh organic produce. It’s sure to be an eye-opener for visiting kids who are used to walking the orderly aisles of a supermarket back home. From a practical point of view, mums and dads can pick up some supplies. We certainly had a few items on our shopping list. Green coconuts for 50 vatu (NZ65c) – put them in the fridge overnight and in the morning, crack them open and drain the cool coconut water into a glass. Such a refreshing way to start the day! There are plenty of fresh herbs on offer too – Italian parsley, coriander and the like (perfect for throwing into an omelette). And we took home some tomatoes, pineapple and bananas too. Yum!
Down on the boardwalk. It’s funny how some places forget to make the most of their natural assets. Until quite recently, Port Vila was one of them. Visitors would spend their time in town walking the main street, browsing shops or grabbing a bite at local eateries. Which was fine. But just a matter of steps away was a lovely waterfront offering panoramic harbour views. What a waste! Fortunately, the powers-that-be decided to do something about it and last year a wide pedestrian waterfront boardwalk was installed, along with other new features, such as a craft centre and a playground for the kids.
During the day, the boardwalk has a real buzz as visitors and locals soak up the surroundings. I’d recommend popping into The Nambawan Café - grabbing an outdoor table, a cool drink, a bite to eat and watching the world go by. Just a few steps down, the Rossi Restaurant offers the same spectacular views and a wide variety of fresh cuisine. If you’re after some souvenirs, the craft market (next to Nambawan Café) is the place to go. The local vendors have handcrafted a variety of quality artworks, jewellery and clothing, plus you’ll find some yummy preserves made from organic local produce.
Exploring hidden gems. Vanuatu is home to a diverse, natural landscape that was made for exploration. Across the 82 islands you’ll find live volcanoes, sparkling sea caves, waterfalls and deserted white sands beaches the equal of any in the world. Even if you go no further than Efate, you’ll still have endless options to choose from. Note: please don’t come to Vanuatu and spend your whole time at the resort!
Rarru Cascades. The Mele Cascades are one of Vanuatu’s most popular attractions. They’re close to Port Vila and the walk through the lush forest to the cool green pools and towering waterfall is well worth the effort. But with a family day trip planned we decided to try somewhere different – the equally picturesque swimming spot of the Rarru Cascades. To get there you drive east from Port Vila for about half or so (depending on traffic which meanders along at a leisurely Vanuatu pace). When you come to the Rentapao Bridge you know you’ve come to the right place. There are two places you can access the same section of cascades. Before the bridge is Rarru Rentapao River Cascade Tours. After the bridge is the Rentapao Riverside Vanuatu. We choose the latter, which was staffed by a friendly French couple. From the grass carpark you take leisurely stroll along a tranquil riverside track, passing pools and terraces - a small taste of what to come! In next to no time you reach the star attraction. Surrounded by lush rainforest, the Rarru Falls cascade into a collection of beautiful green pools. The kind you can’t wait to jump into. Speaking of jumping, there are rope swings of varying heights and a couple of high platforms in need of an adrenalin hit. Just a note here: the pools are easily deep enough for jumping into, you just need to pick your entry point as there are some shallower rocks in places. Sitting under the waterfall is also fun – and you can squeeze into small holes behind the falling water, hidden from view. They are some old-school car tyre tubes for the kids to float around on too. With the warm winter sun shining through the trees, it’s difficult to imagine a more peaceful spot. Pack a lunch and you could easily spend a few hours chilling out. Or you can always just pop by for a quick dip and head away to your next adventure. After swimming, diving and jumping to our hearts content we wander back to the small Rentapao Riverside hut. Waiting for us is a platter of freshly cut grapefruit pieces, coconut and papaya – the perfect refreshment to finish off a fantastic Rarru Cascades experience. Spring 2019

Back to Eden. Back to Eden (not to be confused with Eden on the River) is another magic spot that is tucked away in its own private corner of Efate. To find it, drive past Mele Bay and over the hill towards Havannah Harbour. As you come down the other side you’ll see the turnoff for Back to Eden. After negotiating a few more tight corners (and pot holes) you’ll drop down into Mangaliliu Village and pass through it to your final destination. Owned by a hospitable Australian couple, Back to Eden has a relaxed hideaway vibe. They have a restaurant offering yummy home cooked comfort food – like nachos, pork belly and madras curry. Hungry tums will enjoy the generous portion sizes! From the restaurant you can wander down to the waterline. The surrounding waters are crystal clear and full of marine life. You’re more than welcome to explore this underwater world on your own. Or you can take a snorkelling tour where you’ll be led to a beautiful sea anemone known as Nemo City, the home to dozens of beautiful clown fish. You’ll also see a bed of the most iridescent giant clams, as well as stunning coral, and schools of fish. With luck you may come across a turtle or two. This is a magic spot to spend the day. And if you want to stay ‘lost’ for longer, there have two bungalows that you can stay in.
K2 Café – Funky flavours.
Back to Eden
Word of mouth is a wonderful thing. On our stay at Vila 25 we were chatting to fellow guests and when the subject of where to eat came up, they recommended K2 Café. Well, what a find! Located on the straight stretch of road near the airport, this uber cool eatery sits side by side with industrial tenants like tractor dealerships, plumbing suppliers and furniture showrooms. Don’t be fooled by the unlikely surroundings. This café is a gem. Owned by Kelly (Kiwi) and Kandy (Vanuatu) – hence the name K2 - this funky eatery has gained a well-deserved reputation with visitors and locals alike. The inside of the café has an aircraft hanger feel, but it’s kitted out with all manner of knick knacks. Think retro posters, maps, antiques, stylish lampshades and WW2 memorabilia – such as some (defused) bombs. There’s a playground for the kids too. The varied menu comes with lots of healthy options. Maximum use of fresh local produce is a priority. They’ve also made the dining experience fun with dishes like “All Blacks vs France” – a French baguette soaked in a sweet cinnamon eggy concoction and served with grilled banana, crunchy bacon & drizzled with maple syrup.

So good were the flavours, we stocked up on a selection of K2’s homemade preserves that you can purchase from their deli section. (FYI - there were no issues bringing it back through New Zealand customs). As well as the dine-in experience, K2 offers a catering service that’s ideal for events such as weddings. Their food can be tailored to suit your personal taste and needless to say it will come with the same K2 quality and care.
Free water comes with a smile. When we first landed in Port Vila we’d forgotten to withdraw some local currency (vatu). Normally no big deal, but the evening flight meant the kids were tired and thirsty! The main supermarket was closed, so we pulled into a small convenience store, assuming, like you do, that a credit card would be accepted. But after pulling out some ice-cold bottles of water from the fridge, the lady at the counter said that unfortunately they didn’t take credit. Damn! Just as we’re about to take off in search of another shop, another shop assistant walked out to the carpark with the bottles of water in-hand. With a smile she said “you can have them – no charge”. We accepted the kind offer and the pleasant reminder of why Vanuatu is called the happiest place on earth! Eratap lagoon © Vanuatu Tourism – Kirkland

Places to stay.
Iririki Island Resort
Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu Further along Erakor Lagoon you’ll find another family favourite, Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu. The “kids only” pool with a giant cascading water buckets and a mushroom-topped water fountain is a highlight. Plus they’ll be thoroughly entertained in the modern-well equipped Kids’ Club. Young (and old) will also love the resort’s weekly fire show. The lagoon side setting provides a stunning backdrop. As night falls, the music begins and the troupe of entertainers go about their fiery work! The choreography is spot-on and they use their imagination in ways I haven’t seen before. One of the standout acts was the ‘flaming’ skipping rope – two performers jump in and out as the flames pass just over their head and just under their feet. Add in fire breathing, firesticks, fire gymnastics and spinning fire wheels too. Like any good show there is a request for the audience to get involved. Don't worry, the flames have been put out by that stage! A classic conga line forms and flows across the sand and everyone is happy. It all adds up to a fun night out!
Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu
If there’s an iconic resort in Vanuatu, it’s Iririki Island Resort and Spa. The grandstand position in the middle of Port Vila Harbour instantly sets it apart. Although Iririki is only a two-minute ferry ride from town, it really does feel different from the mainland resorts. Visiting families love the accommodation options, including the spacious two-level apartments and the deluxe family fares. They also love the variety of kid’s activities on offer. Activities run seven days a week from 10am to 6pm, and during these hours children can enjoy all the traditional kid’s club style activities like face painting and weaving and shell collecting. Families also have their own pool area, which gives kids plenty of space to have fun - well away from the adults-only pool on the other side of the resort!
Tamanu on the Beach Vanuatu If you’re after a couples-only escape, Tamanu on the Beach is a fantastic choice. The resort is only 20 drive minutes from the buzz of Port Vila, but it feels like it’s hidden away from the wider world. One of the big drawcards is the private, white sand beach – think quiet strolls, cooling dips and lounging under palm trees. The quality of food is also top notch. Local organic produce is utilised where possible, plus they have an extensive list of French, Australian and New Zealand wines. Stunning setting, great food – what more could you ask for.

Ramada Resort Port Vila Last time we visited Vanuatu, Ramada Resort Port Vila was under construction. Visiting the completed resort you can see what an undertaking it was to build. Much of the property has been cut into a steep cliff face overlooking the tranquil Erakor Lagoon. Taking on this engineering challenge was worth the time and effort – as guests enjoy spectacular views across the water. And the spacious apartment style rooms seem to fit in perfectly with the natural surroundings. This is one of Port Vila’s prime resort settings. The location is just five minutes from downtown Port Vila, but it feels like a “secret” spot, i.e. family relaxation is guaranteed! The smooth lagoon waters are ideal for “go-to” activities like kayaking, snorkelling, paddleboarding and swimming. In typical Ramada style, the accommodation is designed for travelling families. Each option provides Mum, Dad and the kids with plenty of space, plus a full kitchen. Port Vila’s largest supermarket is close by, so picking up supplies is a breeze.
Sail into paradise.
The resort has also put a real emphasis on the quality of its food. And the lagoonside Akiriki Restaurant couldn’t provide a more picturesque setting to savour a meal. Fresh local produce comes to the fore, with dishes that mix Melanesian and Polynesian flavours with a subtle French flair. The night we visited we were lucky enough to enjoy some of the resorts culinary creations. Yellow fin tuna with Nicoise salad, oven roasted poulet fish in white wine, blue cheese flavoured potato gratin, nutmeg infused mashed sweet potato. Yes, some self-control was necessary to dial back the portions! It was delicious. Adding to the vibrant dining atmosphere was the highly entertaining Ekasup Cultural music and dance show. Hailing from the local Ekasup Village, this talented group have performed all over the world – singing and dancing to a mix of traditional Vanuatu beats and modern hits. Within each act they weave a fascinating story of their culture, and they top if off with some comedic audience participation. A great way to burn off some calories!
Escape to pure Tranquillity
Tucked away on Moso Island in Havannah Harbour, Tranquillity Island Resort and Dive Base is a place where you’ll enjoy the Call of Vanuatu with its pristine and peaceful atmosphere, learn to dive, kayak to hidden coves, hike to ancient caves and dive warm crystal clear waters that are teeming with marine life. This is the day trip or longer overnight stays that memories will be made of. There are few South Pacific harbours more beautiful than Havannah Harbour. And the best way to explore these tranquil waters is on board the magnificent Coongoola – a spacious 23 metre auxiliary sailing ketch that will take you to secret coves and the finest of white sand beaches for the day. Warwick Le Lagon - Vanuatu One of Port Vila’s biggest resorts, Warwick Le Lagon is a property that caters to everyone from honeymooning couples to families and conference attendees. And it does so with ease. The 140 plus rooms range from luxurious overwater and private pool villas to comfortable standard rooms. For guests it's a simple matter of choosing which room type suits. One of the first things that strikes you about Le Lagon is how spacious it feels. The 75 acre layout is vast. And because it spreads along the shoreline of Erakor Lagoon, even when the resort is at full capacity, you’re never surrounded by a mass of people. Our kids made excellent use of these lovely outdoor areas, running around on the lawns, playing hide and seek, kicking coconuts and climbing trees. Which sure beats sitting inside watching TV. During the day Le Lagon’s pool complex area is a great place to relax. There are two main pools, a deeper adults pool and a shallower version that’s great for the kids. The Pool Bar opens from 9am till 10pm – morning cocktail anyone? And the Pool Grill Bar serves lunch from 11am till 3pm – think pizza, fish ‘n chips, burgers, BLT’s, plus some healthy salad options too. Grab a lounger, book and menu and you’re pretty much set for the day! Speaking of food, every visitor should take the opportunity to book a seat at the teppanyaki grill inside Le Lagon’s Wild Ginger Restaurant. You’ll be thoroughly

entertained by the skills (and humour) of local chef Stephen. Yes, there’ll be pieces of egg flying towards you. And yes, you’ll love every mouthful. Especially the melt-in-your-mouth organic Santo beef topped with classic Japanese mayo. Delish! And lots of fun for the kids too. The kid’s will also love Le Lagon’s (complimentary) Kids Club. It’s open 8am4.30pm for kids aged 3-12 years and 5.30pm–9pm for kids aged 5-12 years. There are too may activities to list them all, but cooking classes, bingo, jewellery making, t-shirt painting, movie nights are the stand outs. Next to Kid’s Club headquarters is a big two level obstacle course, packed with slides, ramps, ladders, swings and nets – our two girls absolutely loved it. Every day, we’d wander down and they’d roar around at 100 miles an hours – getting timed to see who could complete their course the fastest! While the resort is great for kids, grown ups don’t miss out either. Mums in particular will be more than happy to spend a few hours at Le Lagon’s Oasis Spa. Tucked away amongst a zen-like garden, this zone of pure tranquillity has a long list of treatments. The tough part will be choosing which luxurious treatment to indulge in - such as body scrubs, flower baths, volcanic clay wrap, manicures, pedicures and a host of luscious massages. If you haven’t had enough to do already, there are many more activities around the resort such as arts and crafts, water sports, golf, tennis and other staff-run games. In a nutshell, what more could you want!

Holiday Inn finds synergy with new campaign. Vanuatu’s brand-new destination marketing campaign has struck a chord with the team at Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu. ‘Answer the Call of Vanuatu’ was recently released across Australia and New Zealand. It goes beyond your typical marketing campaign, creating a connection with Vanuatu and the ‘moments’ that visitors experience while holidaying in this unique destination. Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu General Manager, Matthew Senyard, says he is ‘thrilled’ that the new campaign shares their passion for memorable moments. “At Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu we have long lived the mantra of being a place ‘where experiences are created and memories are made’, so we are thrilled that the Vanuatu Tourism Office has developed and launched a campaign that shares our passion for memorable moments,” he said. “As Vanuatu's best family resort, creating memories and delivering special moments is something that our team strive to do every day, as family is an important part of the Vanuatu way of life, and we want all of our guests to take home with them, memories of what was, not dreams of what could have been,” said Mr Senyard. “The new campaign speaks so beautifully to the myriad of unique, authentic and enriching experiences that Vanuatu has to offer, particularly in the archipelago's outer islands which are pristine, untouched and just waiting to be explored.” “For your sake, I urge you to answer the call of Vanuatu!” he says.
Hitting the road in Efate. The island of Efate has so much to see, hiring a car allows you to make the most of it all. And you can do so on your own schedule. There are plenty of rental options, including brands like Avis, Budget and Europcar – and they all have kiosks set up at the airport – so you can pick up straight after you land and drop off on the way out. In Vanuatu the cars are left hand drive, but driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road doesn’t take long to get used to. Like many Pacific Islands, the quality of roads can vary. Watch out for pot holes and keep an eye out for locals who seem to like walking very close to the edge of the road!

RESORT SPOTLIGHT VILLA 25
Port Vila’s Private Paradise by Matt Taylor The coastline surrounding Port Vila is full of twists and turns. And some of the most beautiful are completely hidden from sight. As is this case with Dream Cove, a private, gated development tucked away on a picturesque headland just 15 minutes drive from downtown Port Vila.
Dream Cove is with dotted with a handful of premium beach houses and among them is Villa 25 – an exceptional boutique property that is loved by visitors who treasure the peace and quiet of this private paradise. Although the name suggests just one accommodation option, Villa 25 is in fact, one property with three luxury two-bedroom villas. Although they sit next to each next to each other, they’ve been cleverly staggered so that guests can enjoy their own space. Having said that, Villa 25 creates a ‘community’ feel among guests – like everyone has been let in on a secret – which isn’t far from the truth. One of the first things you notice when you walk into Villa 25 are the lush, meticulously maintained gardens. The abundance of foliage adds to the peaceful ambiance and with the resident gardener on site every morning, there is barely a leaf out of place! Being a boutique property there is no restaurant. But it’s not a problem as each villa has a full kitchen, and most guests stock up on supplies from the local supermarket. You pass by the supermarket on the way from the airport. If you’d prefer to just turn up and have a bunch of supplies ready and waiting for you, Villa 25 has a handy provisions service. You can simply pre-order from a range of different food packages and voila there it is! If you want to go one step further, Vila 25 can organise a private chef to come and cook for you. Or you can always just pop into Port Vila and enjoy a meal.

Along with the three villas there is a beachfront lowana (shared area) that has a full entertainers kitchen, a big dining table and some comfy outdoor couches. During the day the shutters open, revealing the view and letting the breeze flow through. Although you can cook in your own villa, our morning routine began in the lowana. It consisted of ‘dad made’ omelettes, Tanna coffee, fresh tropical fruit, and sitting back and taking in the panoramic views across the glassy waters of Mele Bay. If only you could start every day like this. From there it was reading time in the morning sun. And depending on how energetic you felt - head off for either a paddleboard, kayak, snorkel off the beach or a dip in the infinity pool. Staying in a boutique property was something of a novelty for our family. On most trips we tend to stay in resorts, but the kids loved the change and enjoyed the tranquil setting just as much as Mum and Dad. And of course they loved swimming in the pool. As a family holiday alternative, I can highly recommend it. If you’re in need of a getaway, i.e. get away from the normal hustle, get away from people, get away from the world – Villa 25 is the ideal choice. Both couples and families will love every minute of the stay. And if you have a group of couples or families, you can hire all three villas and have the entire property to yourself. (Think special occasions such as weddings, important birthdays and milestone anniversaries). Regardless of your motivation, Villa 25 is that private paradise you’ll soon want to return to. RESORT SPOTLIGHT TREES & FISHES LUXURY RETREAT AND SPA
Fish, relax, repeat. by Fiona Taylor and John Gow
20
islandtime Spring 2019
Looking for adventure and excitement, indulgence and relaxation without having to move too far? This unique island retreat, ticks all the boxes and in particular is a utopia for fishing and diving enthusiasts.
Ease and simplicity
ensuite is generous in size - housing a stone bath and shower big enough for two. Guests have the option to relax in peace and privacy inside, or out on their own deck.
The Trees and Fishes site extends from the entrance off Efate’s Ring Road down to the shores of Rana Beach. Its location is centrally situated on the serene Havannah Harbour – an easy (and scenic) 30 minutes drive from the Bauerfield International Airport.
Situated on the slope just below the cabins, is a two-tiered plunge pool area, almost hidden in the landscaped gardens. It is a sheltered ‘cool-off’ oasis, with a dappled outlook down over the hub of the resort, and out to the lagoon.
Once guests have settled in, there is little need to venture very far. Scattered about the property are lovely spots to read, relax and recline in comfort. The views are beautiful and the activity on the water is captivating. Yachts, fishing boats and the local style banana boats coming and going, pepper the lagoon against the backdrop of Moso and Lelepa Islands. For those wanting some action, there is plenty to explore. Kayaks and snorkelling equipment are available, with large schools of fish hovering near the foundations of the resort’s jetty. Within close proximity, perhaps only a 50m walk along the waters edge are a number of bars where, like Trees and Fishes, one can relax and watch the glorious sunsets. If a leisurely stroll or stretch is desired, there is a store stocking plenty of snack foods and Tusker (the local beer) about 1km up the road. A little further in the same direction is The Havannah, welcoming visitors to their sumptuous lunch/ dinner offerings. Settlement along this coastline is emerging, but it is really only apparent when on the water. Only 6 years ago, electricity was reticulated to the area. There is good wireless internet and mobile phone reception.
Falling in love The property has been occupied by the same family for the last 35 years. At its heart, lush vegetation enshrouds a collection of open-sided Balinese style huts, sitting amongst informal gardens and white coral paths. This communal area lies alongside the twinkling waters of the lagoon and it is here where guests gather to eat, enjoy a cool cocktail, and share stories around the evening campfire. This magical and tranquil setting has been such that it has drawn a number of families holidaying at Trees and Fishes to invest in properties along this coastline. And unsurprisingly, conversations with those staying in this island wonderland, all remarked on their plans to return.
Spoilt for choice Trees and Fishes accommodates a maximum of 20 people and three different styles of lodgings - all equipped with air-conditioning units, ceiling fans and king-sized beds. For those in search of island glamour and decadence, there are four suites, each with a 96m2 floor area and all featuring outdoor garden baths. They have been designed to provide couples with indoor privacy and access to a shared sheltered outdoor courtyard, where a large and inviting swimming pool adorns its centre. For a group of eight friends or family members wishing to holiday together or celebrate a special occasion in style, booking this entire complex is an ideal option. It is known as Villa Luca and as well as comprising of four spacious bedroom pavilions it includes a separate kitchen and impressive media/entertainment room (the only television on-site). On a smaller and more intimate scale, are two stand-alone cabins tucked amongst gorgeous tropical settings. The interior boasts creative and quality features and each
The third accommodation option is a stone’s throw from the lagoon’s edge and close to the action unfolding at Trees and Fishes. Four double bedrooms and two bathrooms, all under one roof, offer a shared lodge-type stay. For those individuals or groups, primarily focused on the fishing and adventuring aspects of their stay, these comfortable, stylish and rustic rooms are perfect.
All inclusive A handsome Balinese-style dining area situated alongside the waters edge, is where all meals are served daily. Close by is a stand-alone kitchen where meals are prepared and plated, and in-between is an area erected specifically for an outdoor flame. Food is fresh and seasonal, with local produce starring proudly on the regularly changing menu’s – fresh fruit and vegetables, organic meat and of course, fish – most likely to have been caught off one of the resort’s four boats. The cooking style is simple and wholesome with an element of rustic sophistication. For those travelling on a ‘package’ stay – breakfast and dinner is included. There is a good choice of breakfast options, including muesli, French toast, corn fritters and the scrumptious “Blokem Wrap”. The eggs are fresh and the bacon is delicious. Dinner each night consists of no less than a three-course meal. A freshly caught seafood bounty for example, could result in a multi-layered banquet. Similarly, a special occasion could prompt a gastronomic celebration. To complete an evening of delectable dining, an assortment of New Zealand, Australian and French wine is available.
An anglers paradise. The waters of Vanuatu offer fantastic fishing, and the folk at Trees and Fishes have everything needed to make the most of it all. They own and operate four clean, well-maintained, fishing boats, and they proudly sit tied to their small jetty. Depending on your timeframe and budget, you can choose either a half-day or full-day package. The target species varies – we’re talking dog tooth/yellow fin tuna, marlin, mahimahi, wahoo and giant trevally. In short, there is plenty to choose from! Having spent many hours of my recreational time on the water fishing it was obvious that this was a very professional operation. From the Penn rods and reels to the Edgewater 32 Centre Console vessels, everything was in its place and ready for a serious fishing mission! Our skipper and crew, led by Jed, maintained all along that we would catch a marlin. Sure enough after a couple of hours we hooked up, and through the great tuition of Jed, Chris, a novice marlin angler, brought the fish to the boat. Having fished off Fiji, Rarotonga, the coast of New Zealand and Australia, I can say from experience that these fishing grounds were the most exciting. The professional way the charter was run, quality vessels, quality fishing gear and a crew with an extraordinary depth of knowledge made for a very exciting and enjoyable day on the water.

See the Legend of Tongaiti come to life Te Vara Nui Village is one of Raratonga’s most popular attractions and is a mustsee for any Cook Island’s visitor. One of the highlights is the Over Water Night Show and Buffet Dinner. Set against a beautiful rock waterfall backdrop, talented dancers and musicians bring to life the Legend of Tongaiti - a voyaging warrior who set sail from a faraway land with his tribe. Upon discovering “Tumu-Te-Varovaro” (Rarotonga) he and his people find hostile natives, throwing spears and yelling to scare them away from their shores. After days sailing around the island, tired and hungry, Tongaiti calls upon his beautiful daughter to dance for the Chief of Tumu-Te-Varovaro, hoping her beauty would soften his heart and allow them to set foot on the land. We won’t spoil the end of the story, just make sure you see it for yourself!
Kiwi couple take the reins at Lagoon Breeze Proving that life renews in seven-year cycles, Lagoon Breeze Villas has celebrated its 7th birthday by welcoming in new managers Mike and Pauline Dennehy! The Kiwi couple both have extensive customer focused backgrounds. Pauline as a nurse, and Mike as a police officer in the New Zealand Police Force. As experienced global travellers and empty nesters, they were looking for a simpler way of life that connected them to community and people. Their first taste of management came when they were asked to manage Ikurangi Eco Retreat, while the owner took maternity leave. This stint provided them with a good base of experience and knowledge to step into a bigger property. And when approached by the owner operators of Lagoon Breeze, Deb and Garth Riechelmann, they felt ready to sign the management contract and commit to a new life in Rarotonga! We wish them every success.

Feed the fish! There are so many cool things to see and do at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Lagoonarium, like walking straight off the beach into the Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve and feeding the fish by hand! Because these fish live in a protected reserve they know they’re safe so they don’t dart away. Instead, they love making new friends. The Rarotongan’s Aroa Lagoon is a very special spot – it’s right on the southwestern coast so receives all-day sun, it’s able to be used at all-tides for free snorkelling, fish-feeding, kayaking, standup paddleboarding and swimming, and because it’s been a ra’ui (reserve) for nearly 20 years, it offers Rarotonga’s best snorkelling straight off The Rarotongan’s Aroa Beach. Aroa Lagoon has many colourful tropical fish with cool names like butterfly, squirrel, rabbit and angel. You can even go on The Rarotongan’s Night Snorkelling Tour and see “the night shift” in action – like the parrot fish in its cool “jelly sleeping cocoon”! For children aged to 11 years The Rarotongan offers a fun Cook Islands Nature & Culture Discovery Programme through their free Moko’s Kids Club which is open year-round, Monday to Saturday, from 9am-12 noon, 2-5pm and the all-important 7-9pm – giving parents space for quality time together in the evening. Manuia among first to attain Mana Tiaki Certification Manuia Beach Resort has become one of the first tourism businesses in the Cook Islands to attain Mana Tiaki Eco Certification. Launched in April, the Mana Tiaki Eco Certification, also known as eco accreditation or green accreditation, is a joint project between the Te Ipukarea Society, Cook Islands Tourism Industry Council, and Cook Islands Tourism Corporation. “With our Mana Tiaki Eco Certification, guests are assured that their tourism footprint is responsibly minimised when staying at Manuia Beach Resort,” said Sue Fletcher-Vea, Manuia Beach Resort’s General Manager. “Located lagoon-side on Rarotonga’s sunset coast in Arorangi, Manuia Beach Resort has always strived to be an environmentally sustainable resort. Now with Mana Tiaki Eco Certification we are formally recognised as contributing to the long-term sustainability of the Cook Islands tourism industry. And we are extremely proud of that,’ she said. Mana Tiaki Eco Certification is only granted when an applicant goes through a rigorous process to become accredited. The Mana Tiaki Eco Certification criteria includes points related to water and sanitation, biodiversity, solid waste, energy, and other best practices related to environmental responsibility. “I encourage all tourism operators to apply for Mana Tiaki Eco Certification by demonstrating that they meet best environmentally practices in their operations. The reward is not only the Mana Tiaki Eco Certification, but a sustainable future for the Cook Islands’ tourism industry,” said Fletcher-Vea.
A flight a day for Air New Zealand Availability of flights is one of the key factors that travellers take into account when they’re choosing a destination, which is one reason why Air New Zealand’s service to and from Rarotonga is so popular. The airline flies to Rarotonga daily with the exception of February and March, when the Monday flight is taken off the schedule. But that’s still leaves 6 flights a week, which offers plenty of flexibility for those who love heading to the beautiful Cook Islands.

Exciting additions at Plantation Island After the completion of major building projects, Plantation Island Resort has developed a variety of facilities that enhance its stunning beachfront location. The work consisted of two projects that were built side by side. Public facilities included a new arrivals bure, Tavola Restaurant and Bar, and a new pool. Alongside this, 40 new ‘hotel style’ rooms were built in four double story blocks – all boasting views of beautiful Malolo Lailai Bay. The rooms also come with a balcony or patio, so that guests can enjoy indoor/outdoor living. Already one of Fiji’s most popular family-friendly island resorts, Plantation Island will no doubt become even more sought after!

If you’re lucky enough to be staying at Likuliku, you’ll have the option of enjoying this by invite-only island. Exclusive Mociu Island experiences include the following: Mociu Snorkel experience incredible marine life and colourful coral as you snorkel directly off the private beach or around the back of the island, Mociu Sunrise - venture out early morning for a hike to the top of the island to take in the beauty of a Fiji sunrise, and Mociu Picnic – for some daytime private romance, enjoy a lunchtime picnic on Mociu’s private beach. At Pacific Island Air sky high standards run in the family. If you arrive in Fiji and your first priority is catching a helicopter transfer out to an idyllic island resort, you’ll probably be too excited to think about the company that’s taking you there! If you’re flying with Pacific Island Air, it’s still nice to know you’re in the safe hands of a highly respected New Zealand based aviation group. Christchurch based GCH Aviation is the parent company of Garden City Helicopters, Wellington Helicopters, Kaikoura Helicopters, plus they have branches in Nelson and Greymouth. And along with the Pacific Island Air operation in Fiji, they also operate Vanuatu Helicopters out of Port Vila. While GCH Aviation’s reach is impressive, it all started from small beginnings back in 1983. The evolution into tourism and charter flights, air ambulance and rescue operations and commercial flying services as well as fixed-wing aircraft charter operations is testament to their ethos of constant improvement. The latest example is the recent introduction of a new Airbus EC130 helicopter to Pacific Island Air fleet. The six-passenger EC130 is a modern machine with huge bubble windows for viewing Fiji’s spectacular islands and reefs. It is also much quieter and offers air-conditioned comfort on those warm tropical days. GCH Aviation are also the only aviation company in New Zealand to be awarded supplier status with Virtuoso – a leading global network of agencies who partner over 1,800 of the world’s best travel companies including hotels, cruise lines and tour operators. On top of that, GCH Aviation operate the South Islands first 24/7 FBO (Fixed Base Operation) private jet centre which can receive international jets with full customs clearance facilities on site in Christchurch. So next time you’re eager to get from Nadi International Airport to the sparkling blue waters of your Fiji island paradise, you’ll know you’re travelling with a company that sets the highest of standards in everything it does.

Marriott celebrates underground cooking What culinary specialty is common through the Pacific Islands such as Fiji, Samoa and New Caledonia? Underground cooking! The traditional dish cooked under hot stones in the ground is called a “bougna” in New Caledonia, a “lovo” in Fiji and an “umu” in Samoa. At the end of September through to mid-October, the Marriott International resorts of the Pacific Islands will be showcasing local and traditional cuisine using traditional methods. In New Caledonia these unique culinary events will take place at Le Méridien Nouméa, Le Méridien Ile des Pins and Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Spa & Golf Resort. Accompanying this special culinary experience will be workshops and traditional activities, traditional songs and dances, and weaving and sculpture workshops. What a fantastic way to celebrate our Pacific cultures.
Spa heaven in the Isle of Pines It may not grab the headlines like some South Pacific locations, but the Isle of Pines in New Caledonia can match any when it comes to sheer beauty. The island is home to the Deep Nature Spa at Le Meridien Isle des Pins – the perfect place to immerse yourself in these striking natural surroundings. Encircled by white sand and crystal clear water, this spa haven is dedicated to well-being and relaxation. You’ll enjoy a full menu of luscious spa treatments and you can choose your setting from two treatment cabins and an outside fare on the beach. Yes, you’ve just found heaven.
Chateau Royal a proud supporter It’s always great to see tourism businesses getting in behind local initiatives and Chateau Royal Beach Resort and Spa in Noumea is a great example. The resort partners with a number of New Caledonia’s premier events such as the New Caledonia International Marathon that attracts a field of world-class runners and local participants – including 42 entrants from New Zealand. The resort has also been associated with the New Caledonia Trail Festival that includes five races stretching from 5km to 130km! (What a great way to see the countryside). And they have even sponsored the Auckland based French Festival, a four-day experience that celebrates French food, wine, fashion and language right here in New Zealand!

Solomon Islands
In search of lost lives During World War II, some of the Pacific’s most fierce battles took place in the Solomon Islands. During this time, thousands of military personnel were listed as Missing in Action (MIA). But through the efforts of the USA Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), dedicated individuals and groups and concerned Solomon Islanders, the remains of these long-lost warriors are still being discovered and identified. American, Mark Roche is one of those dedicated individuals who has spent time diving the ship and aircraft wrecks in the Solomon Islands with the help of Dive Munda. “My guides at Dive Munda, Sunga Boso and Brian Daga, took me on numerous dives on known wrecks for a couple of days. They were intrigued with my knowledge of WWII Navy aircraft and asked if I’d take a boat ride over to Mbaeroko Harbour to examine a recently discovered wreck in the water. They were unsure if it was Japanese or American. As soon as I entered the water, I gazed down some 50 feet on the most perfectly intact Grumman Wildcat I’ve ever seen. It was flat on its back and, now bare aluminium, was gleaming in the light,” said Mark. While surveying the aircraft, Mark discovered a set of bones. And this began a long effort to identify this fallen naval aviator. The process saw the bones taken to the forensics lab at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii, and many investigations from the DPAA. Eventually Mark discovered the bones belonged to a Lt. Irvin Rink. And with the assistance of Belinda Botha, owner of Dive Munda, and her team, Mark was able to lay a plaque on Irvin’s plane commemorating his sacrifice.

Retro tiki-bar charm at the Hilton Garden Inn Hilton Garden Inn, Kauai has added a dose of Hawaiian charm to its property with the opening of Mamahune’s, a retro-themed tiki bar and restaurant. The open-air bar offers contemporary Hawaiian cuisine, handcrafted cocktails, and picturesque views of Wailua Bay. The bar is inspired by a tale of Mama Menehune whose children, the Menehune (ancient craftspeople of Hawaiian legend), built a tiki shack by the sea for her. Encompassing classic tiki flair from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, Mamahune’s features a custom, hand-carved wooden bar, ample seating and even an erupting volcano. On Mamahune’s menu is local ingredients with a fresh vision, such as the Ahi Poke & Avocado Nachos with Hawaiian Yellowfin tuna and crispy wontons and the Shave Ice with a choice of pureed strawberry, mango, lilikoi or guava. Pair that with a Mamahune’s Ali’i Tai cocktail, a delicious spin on the classic Mai Tai infused with guava, nectar, pineapple juice, lime, and coconut water. Or try the Da Very Sneaky Tiki, a cocktail spectacle served on fire with some very secret ingredients. Delicious.
Maori artists connect with Hawai'i Two Maori artists have been selected to explore the archives of the iconic Bishop Museum in Honolulu. The successful practitioners were Ngahina Hohaia and Julian Arahanga. “With this opportunity comes a great responsibility to honor the legacy of Te Rangihiroa,” said filmmaker, writer and researcher Arahanga. “I think of many things, I think of the people of the Pacific, their historical connections and how in this time it is so important that we reignite those connections and all that it means.” Bishop Museum is one of the most visited cultural attractions in Hawai'i and provides a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the rich history of Hawai'i.
