A time of reconnection.

At this time of the year, it's nice to feel the change of season. But even though temperatures are beginning to rise at home, we've always found spring to be an ideal time to travel to the Pacific Islands. The weather is settled, there's plenty of sun, and it's a nice little reward for getting through winter!

For those seeking a springtime getaway, Vanuatu has a world of fabulous options. In September, we were able to see many of them for ourselves during Tok Tok, Vanuatu Tourism's flagship travel trade event. We were able to reconnect with local operators and visit places we hadn't seen in four years. In this issue, we cover Tok Tok's many highlights.

In August, we also went back to Tahiti. And for the first time, we saw these magnificent islands by sea, onboard Windstar's Wind Spirit. Seven nights cruising from beautiful island to beautiful island sounds idyllic, and it really was. This premium small-ship experience is intimate, personalised, and you feel like part of the Windstar family as soon as you step onboard.

It was one of our most memorable Pacific getaways, and we hope you enjoy the read, along with all the regular industry updates.

Tok Tok 2023: Vanuatu Answers the Call

Like all the Pacific Islands, Vanuatu has had its fair share of challenges. But after a fouryear break, the Vanuatu Tourism Office (VTO) successfully hosted its flagship trade show, Tok Tok, from August 28 to September 4 — a welcome sign of strength and positivity.

Tok Tok brings together local operators and international sellers through one-on-one scheduled meetings to discuss opportunities for selling and promoting Vanuatu over the next 12 months. These business-to-business meetings took place over a full day at the Warwick Le Lagon Conference Centre. In total, Tok Tok gathered over 60 local businesses and 41 international buyers, including Product Managers from key players like Flight Centre, House of Travel, and Our Pacific.

Things kicked off with a welcome event hosted at Vanuatu Marketplace. This celebrated the Department of Tourism's Made in Vanuatu programme, offering guests the opportunity to purchase products proudly created, grown, and developed in Vanuatu. Highlights included handmade spirits from 83 Islands Distillery and sweet treats from Aelan Chocolate Makers – as well as local kava!

Air Vanuatu hosted the first evening function for buyers, at Chantillys on the Bay, where we heard from Greg Wilson, the Chief Commercial Officer. He was delighted that Air Vanuatu was a major sponsor of the event. The announcement of an additional weekly flight from Auckland to Port Vila was warmly received by attendees. New Zealand currently represents 15% of the market, close to pre-Covid levels.

Tok Tok concluded on a high note with a sustainability-focused gala evening at Warwick Le Lagon, embracing a "Go Green" theme. Many attendees stayed on for familiarisation trips to the outer islands of Santo and Tanna.

Bookending Tok Tok, visiting travel industry members experienced pre-event site visits across Efate, including visits to a selection of popular tourist sites and attractions such as 83 Islands Distillery, Eden by the River, plus a full schedule of property visits. While post-event famils took the buyers and media to experience the outer islands of Santo and Tanna.

It was great to be back in Vanuatu, as nothing can beat meeting people face-toface and seeing places with your own eyes. Thank you to all those involved; it was a job well done, and we look forward to coming back soon!

Deeley brothers take over Iririki Island Resort

From 1 September 2023, the reins of the Iririki Island Resort in Vanuatu have been handed over to Brendon and Mark Deeley. With a strong background in the Australian hotel industry, this marks the brothers' debut business endeavour in Vanuatu, a place they've come to love over multiple visits. The path to acquiring the resort was dotted with intricacies, but their dedication to Vanuatu and belief in its tourism potential made the journey worthwhile. Brendon Deeley remarked, "As Vanuatu emerges from the impacts of COVID-19, we see a bright future, especially for a premier resort like Iririki."

Having a track record of rejuvenating underperforming hotels in Australia, the Deeleys plan to apply this expertise to Iririki, aiming to enhance its offerings. While the resort's staff count currently stands at 130, down from its previous 300, Brendon assures that numbers will rise as they adapt the resort to cater to the expected surge in tourists, which will in turn benefit the local community.

Air Vanuatu partners with Solomon Airlines to boost NZ flight schedules

Air Vanuatu has recently announced an expansion of its flight schedules to New Zealand, now offering four return flights weekly. This increases the weekly passenger capacity to 1,280, translating to over 66,000 seats annually between New Zealand and Vanuatu.

This growth has been facilitated through Air Vanuatu's partnership with Solomon Airlines. With Solomon Airlines acquiring more aircraft, they've been able to double their weekly return flights to Auckland from one to two on behalf of Air Vanuatu. This collaboration not only benefits those travelling to Vanuatu but also offers New Zealanders more convenient transit options to the Solomon Islands via Port Vila. Further cementing their partnership, Air Vanuatu has been designated as the General Sales Agent for Solomon Airlines in Vanuatu, taking charge of all sales activities for them.

In addition to these developments, Air Vanuatu has also adjusted flight times to Brisbane, offering more convenient departure schedules. The airline maintains its three weekly return flights to Brisbane, a direct flight to Espiritu Santo Island, five weekly return services to Sydney, a weekly return flight from Fiji now serviced by a larger Boeing 737, and three weekly return flights to New Caledonia.

Raj takes the reins at The Havannah Vanuatu

The Havannah Vanuatu has announced an exciting new addition to its team with the appointment of Parimalan Kandaraj, also known as Raj, as the new General Manager. Raj brings extensive experience in the hospitality industry and a proven track record of success, promising to bring a fresh perspective to the award-winning resort's operations.

Owners Greg and Liz Pechan are thrilled about this new appointment. "Raj's passion for excellence and commitment to providing exceptional guest experiences make him the perfect fit for our resort," they said.

Raj will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the resort's operations, including guest services, food and beverage, and housekeeping. Volcano Island Divers pioneer eco-friendly diving

Melanesia's first PADI ECO Dive Centre has found its home on Tanna Island, thanks to White Grass Ocean Resort & Spa's Volcano Island Divers. White Grass: New dive boat opens up options

Established in 2019, this craft rum distillery has quickly made a name for itself by producing limited editions of flavoured rums, gins, and other spirits, all crafted using local ingredients.

The distillery takes full advantage of the South Pacific's subtropical climate, which offers exceptional conditions for rum ageing. But what truly sets 83 Islands apart is its commitment to local agriculture. They collaborate with local farmers on the island of Efate for their sugarcane production. Their 2020 Rhum Agricole, made with wild sugarcane, has even spawned a new industry that supports hundreds of local families.

For those interested in the craft of spirit-making, the distillery offers a unique "Distillery Experience." This includes a guided tour where you'll learn about the production processes, followed by a sample tasting of their finest rums and local liqueurs. The presentation is both fun and informative, led by a knowledgeable team member. It's an experience well worth your time when you're in Port Vila!

Get ready for the thrill of your life

Adventure seekers, mark your calendars! Vanuatu Jungle Zipline's much-anticipated Giant Swing is set to open in mid-October 2023. And this isn't just any swing; it's a pendulum swing that will let you free-fall from a height of 65 metres into a forest canyon. Within just 3.5 seconds, 'swingers' will reach speeds of up to 120 km per hour. Engineered and manufactured in New Zealand, this state-of-the-art adventure has recently made its way to our shores and promises a genuine adrenaline-filled experience. As the speed slows down, you'll be lowered to the canyon floor, giving you the opportunity to take a leisurely walk back through our lush green valley. Note: the Giant Swing is for those aged 12 and older, and you'll need to be fit enough to walk back up the hill.

For a (slightly) less heart-pumping experience, Vanuatu Jungle Zipline offers six different 'zips' to choose from. Plus, you can take in the jaw-dropping views from the 120m-long Skybridge, which looks out over Mele Bay.

Santo: Vanuatu's hidden gem

While most travellers to Vanuatu tend to stay around Port Vila on the island of Efate, largely due to its direct air international access, those who have the time to explore further should definitely consider adding Santo to their itinerary. If they do, they will be richly rewarded.

As part of Tok Tok, we were given the chance to visit Santo again – as with previous visits to the island, Santo’s quiet charms soon sink into you. The vibe is laid back –even more than Efate. The locals have a refreshingly different outlook on life, unburdened by the material concerns and time pressures that often rule Western societies. Here, life is wonderfully simple, and the focus is on natural beauty and genuine human connection. With its stunning beaches, magnificent blue holes, and world-class diving opportunities, Santo is not just a place to visit, but a lifestyle to absorb and cherish from the moment you land.

South Pacific WWII Museum: A rich history

During the Second World War, the Japanese war machine was advancing across the Pacific, and the United States needed a base for supplies and a place to set up hospitals for their wounded troops. They chose Santo. Over 40,000 troops were permanently stationed on the island, making it America's second-largest Pacific base, after Hawaii. Seven years ago, three local leaders hatched a plan to build a WWII educational museum. The aim was to engage the local Ni-Vanuatu community, allowing them to experience their own history in new ways. The museum would also attract international and domestic visitors to Santo. While the original intention was to build the museum as one large project, the significant funding required has led to a staged building approach. Currently, a mini-museum is operating, featuring an impressive collection of artefacts, maps, documents, and historical photos. It has proven extremely popular with visitors and school children. Meanwhile, a fundraising campaign continues in the background to enable the next stages to be built.

Champagne Beach: Unspoiled beauty

If you're in search of a dream beach, look no further than Champagne Beach, located about 45 minutes north of Luganville on Santo Island. This stretch of sand isn’t just a standout in the Pacific; it rivals the best beaches globally, including those in the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean. Imagine warm, crystal-clear waters, powdery white sands, and a backdrop of offshore islands framed by lush tropical rainforests. It's nothing short of magical. What makes Champagne Beach even more special is its tranquillity. With no resorts or accommodations directly on the beach, it remains largely untouched. The only locals you're likely to encounter are families living their daily lives in this idyllic setting. However, if a cruise ship is docked, the beach can get crowded, so it's best to plan your visit accordingly. Most of the time, you'll have this slice of paradise all to yourself.

Nanda Blue Hole: A hidden oasis

For adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers, the Nanda Blue Hole, also known as Jackie's Blue Hole, is a must-visit spot in Santo. Situated at the northern end of Turtle Bay, this stunning natural wonder is accessible for experienced kayakers, taking about 2 hours to reach from the starting point. The journey up the river is best undertaken during an incoming high tide and offers a genuine jungle experience. If kayaking isn't your thing, the blue hole is also reachable by car, just a quick 6-8 minute drive past Turtle Bay. Massive tectonic forces, thrust the islands of French Polynesia from deep blue Pacific waters and what remains are mountainous peaks covered in lush tropical forest, all encircled by fluorescent blue lagoons. Nature carved deep water bays and towering waterfalls and provided a pristine environment where flora and fauna could flourish. If there was ever a destination made for cruising, it’s the dreamy islands of French Polynesia!

Our chosen cruise was Windstar’s Dreams of Tahiti onboard the MSV Wind Spirit A 7 day itinerary that started in Papeete with visits to Moorea, Tahaa, Raiatea, Bora Bora and Huahine, before returning back to Papeete. Windstar Cruises specialise in small ship cruising. And for anyone who is used to ‘big’ ship cruising, the difference is like day and night.

The benefits of being smaller become obvious from the very outset. The embarkation process is quick and super simple, i.e. you’re not waiting in line behind thousands of passengers scrambling to get onboard. Instead, you’re warmly welcomed by the crew who soon become your new Windstar family. A personal orientation tour of the ship follows, along with a detailed rundown on how the cruise works. In a nutshell, you feel right at home, right away!

The cabins are designed to have a yacht feel. Storage is cleverly designed (comfortably enough room for two suitcases of gear) and the booth style table setup makes enjoying an in-cabin drink or snack easy. If you want to stay connected, Wind Spirit has full WiFi coverage – it’s not fibre-optic broadband, but it’s more than fast enough for checking emails, uploading social posts and surfing the net. Each cabin has a flat screen TV with a selection of channels or you can grab DVDs from reception if you want some movie time. There’s also a full room service menu –simply call and there’ll be a knock at our door shortly afterwards.

Finally, each cabin comes with a dedicated Room Attendant. Although their primary job description is to keep your cabin clean, re-stock the minibar, make beds and sort your laundry – they know everything about the cruise. They quickly become your cruise ‘personal assistant’. Providing useful advice about all the onboard activities, tours and places to see at each port. Our attendant was a Filipino native named Lute (Lutey) – a smiling, humorous fellow who could not have been nicer or more efficient.

First stop Moorea

The cruise begins with an overnight in Papeete. This gives passengers a chance to familiarise themselves with the ship and get the first taste of the fine cuisine that will be enjoyed during the next week. (More about the amazing food later). Early next morning, Wind Spirit departs for Moorea – it’s a quick trip of around 2 hours.

Gaps in the surrounding reef give way to protected bays that sit against a backdrop of deep green volcanic peaks that have been the chiselled by oceanic elements for over a million years. Coconut palms sway in the wind and schools of fish meander through light blue lagoons. Near the reef entrance, we were lucky enough to see a pod of whales jumping out of the water.

Wind Spirit drops anchor in the spectacular setting of Cooks Bay. Big cruise ships simply can’t navigate into places like this, which means Windstar guests can get up close and personal with Tahiti’s special setting.

At each stop, guests can choose from a wide selection of tour excursions. Each tour is tailored with local operators specifically for Windstar guests – ensuring an authentic, personalised experience that tells a story of the local area. We chose the Moorea Lagoon / Stingray-Shark Jetski Adventure and it was an absolute blast. After a thorough safety briefing and a little practice ‘drive’, we set off with our guide leading the way. He carefully guided us through the clear lagoon waters, and we were treated to breathtaking views of the mountains along the way.

At the midway point, we paused at a picture postcard motu – a place for snorkelling, chilling and indulging in fresh grapefruit and coconut. But the real highlight - venturing into the lagoon's shallow waters where we had an up-close experience with the stingrays and black tip sharks. It was thrilling and awe-inspiring to be in such close proximity to these majestic creatures, watching them gracefully glide around us.

Next stop Raiatea

Leaving Moorea, we get our first chance to enjoy Windstar’s signature sail away with the Columbus ‘Conquest of Paradise Theme’ music as the backdrop. The sight of 6 huge white sails unfurling on the four masts was quite magnificent and we literally glide out of the harbour and onto our next adventure on Raiatea.

Raiatea, often referred to as "The Sacred Island," sits just across the lagoon from its sister island, Tahaa, with both islands sharing the same protective barrier reef. Local legends say these two islands were once united, only to be separated by a mystical conger eel inhabited by a princess's spirit.

Historically, Raiatea stood as the cultural and religious heart of the Society Islands. The southeast coast houses Taputapuatea, a marae of immense significance, where kings from nearby islands once convened for grand ceremonies. The island's main town, Uturoa is home to shops, cafés and galleries, and is a hub for yacht charters who are based there.

Again, Windstar offer a wide variety of tours, including drift snorkelling, a 4WD safari, pearl farm tour, scuba dive, river kayak and heritage tour that takes in the Taputapuātea Marae complex.

A short hop to Tahaa

One of the most unforgettable experiences of our journey was the day we spent on Motu Mahaea, a secluded private island that epitomises the dreamy South Pacific paradise. Framed by swaying palm trees, the island is home to pristine white-sand beaches beckoning you to relax and soak in the serene surroundings.

The waters surrounding Motu Mahaea are a shimmering shade of blue. For those who love to swim, the experience is world-class. Snorkellers will be thrilled with the colourful coral reefs and the diverse marine life that call the motu home.

As the morning progresses, the aroma of a barbecue wafts through the air! The ship's food and beverage crew have prepared a sumptuous lunch is prepared, featuring a spread of grilled meat and seafood, fresh salads, and tropical fruits. To complement the meal, refreshing tropical drinks are served. Plus there’s a classic beach bar set up, serving cold beer. With the warm sun shining, this is pure bliss!

Bora Bora: The Bucket List

Next stop, the iconic island of Bora Bora – a bucket list destination if there ever was one. For me personally, it would be a first-time visit. As we sail through Tahaa’s reef pass and into open ocean, you can see the distinctive peaks of Bora Bora off in the distance – taking my anticipation up a notch.

Home to some of Tahiti’s finest resorts, Bora Bora has long been a playground for the rich and famous - Hollywood stars, business moguls, you name them they’ve stayed there. Besides the glitz and glamour, Bora Bora has some fascinating back stories too.

During World War II, Bora Bora held strategic importance for the United States as a refuelling and supply base. The U.S. military constructed the island's first airstrip, which was also one of the earliest in the Pacific. While the island never saw combat, the American presence left a lasting impact, including military infrastructure that can still be seen today. The airstrip laid the groundwork for what would later become Bora Bora Airport, a key gateway for tourism.

If you get a chance, be sure to visit one of the sites where naval cannons were placed. You’ll enjoy amazing views of the surrounding lagoon, plus it’s a reminder of Bora Bora's historical landscape.

Under the Stars: Windstar’s Private Island BBQ on Bora Bora

Windstar's Private Island BBQ evening on picture postcard Motu Tapu is a slice of barefoot luxury under the stars. After taking a short tender from the Wind Spirit, we were seated in an open-air fare and treated to a mouthwatering BBQ. The standout dishes being charcoal-grilled crayfish tails and succulent BBQ pork. The communal seating adds a social element to the evening, providing a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow passengers from all corners of the world. The evening finishes with a traditional cultural performance, complete with thrilling fire dancing. It's a magical night and yet another cruise highlight.

Raiatea Tahaa

Bora Bora

Another must do (or must swim) is Matira Beach. Renowned for its soft white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, this idyllic stretch of shoreline offers a tranquil setting perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkelling. And after walking to the cannons you’ll feel like a refreshing dip. With its stunning backdrop of lush hills and palm trees, Matira Beach is often called one of the most beautiful beaches in the world – it’s easy to see why.

If you’ve worked up a thirst, Bora Bora’s most famous eatery is Bloody Mary’s. Known for its laid-back Polynesian atmosphere, sandy floors, and thatched-roof ambience, this iconic establishment has been serving up fresh seafood and local cuisine since 1979. Bloody Mary's offers a unique dining experience where you can select your own catch of the day from a display of freshly caught fish and shellfish. Add in a tropical cocktail and legendary hospitality, and Bloody Mary's is a must-visit. It’s only a 5 minute taxi ride from the main town of Vaitape.

Huahine: Stepping back in time

After bidding farewell to the enchanting shores of Bora Bora, our journey took us to the island of Huahine. Often referred to as the "Garden of Eden," Huahine is a paradise of lush forests, vibrant tropical landscapes and charming villages.

While Bora Bora is largely focused on catering to the tourist industry, Huahine offers a glimpse into a more traditional, community-based, and sustainable way of life. Here, the islanders live off the land, cultivating crops and fishing in the surrounding waters. Many also supplement their income by selling dried coconut flesh, which is sent back to Tahiti for processing. It's a place where the rhythms of daily life are in harmony with the land and sea, offering a stark but beautiful contrast to the more tourist-centric islands.

The Huahine by E-Bike Tour fitted perfectly with this ethos of sustainability and provided an amazing way to see the island's highlights. After getting fitted with a helmet and a quick tutorial on how to operate the E-Bike, we set off towards the east side of the island, with our guide leading the way.

Having never ridden an electric-assist bike before, it was surprising how effortless it was -even up steep hills! At various points, our guide pulled us over and shared insights about the local culture, the history of the island, and how today's local community lives. A highlight was the ancient Anini Marae, which dates back around 800 years. There were plenty of photo-op stops, and we also had a chance to swim at the glorious Avea Beach - yet another picture-perfect swimming and snorkelling spot.

Huahine was another unique stop on our "Dreams of Tahiti" cruise. It's different from the other islands, more focused on local life and traditions. But like each place we've visited, Huahine adds something special to the trip.

The Windstar Way: Crafting authentic experiences

According to Clare Taylor, the Hotel General Manager on Wind Spirit, Windstar is all about creating bespoke experiences – and the tour options are a great example. Respecting local customs

When you visit American Samoa you will experience genuine warmth and hospitality, but people should still be aware of and respect the local customs. Fa’a Samoa, the Samoan way, is deeply welcoming, but there are protocols to follow:

Evening Prayer Curfew:

Between 6pm and 7pm, many villages observe a prayer curfew lasting 10-20 minutes. Avoid walking through villages during this time.

Sunday Observance:

Most shops close on Sundays, but many tourist attractions remain open. When passing through villages, be quiet and move slowly.

Dress Appropriately:

In villages, women should opt for a lavalava (sarong) over shorts or pants. If attending church, dress modestly. Avoid going topless or nude when swimming or sunbathing.

Entering a Fale:

Before entering a traditional thatched house, remove your shoes. If elders are seated, remain seated and avoid standing.

Sitting Etiquette:

When seated in a fale, avoid pointing your feet at others. Instead, tuck them away, cross them, or cover them with a lavalava or mat.

Photography:

Always ask for permission before taking photos in a village. Being mindful of these customs will ensure a respectful and enriching experience in Samoa.

The Samoan Legend: Turtle and the Shark

In American Samoan folklore, the "Turtle and the Shark" tells a tale of family and love. The story revolves around Fonueau and her daughter Salofa, who, during a famine, transform into a turtle and a shark after leaping from a cliff. Big win for Return to Paradise scholarship student

We're thrilled to share this inspiring story of Han Lemalu, a 19-year-old talent from Matautu Lefaga, the same local village as Return to Paradise Resort. Han is not just a member of the local community; he's also a scholarship student under one of the resort's educational programmes. This year, Han took home the coveted title at the Teuila Ailao Afi competition, outshining seven other finalists. Han delivered a flawless performance that captivated both the audience and judges alike.

Currently studying at the National University of Samoa (N.U.S.), he was mentored by his older cousins, who themselves have competed in international Siva Afi competitions and performed in Hong Kong. Aside from the Teuila competition, Han also participated in a national competition earlier this year, where he secured fourth place. His dream now is to compete internationally and support his family through this unique skill. Naturally, Return to Paradise Resort couldn't be prouder of Han's achievements and is excited to see where his talent takes him next!

Niue, an island known for its unique experiences, has added to its allure. During peak season, the island unveiled some distinctive and rejuvenated food and beverage outlets, further cementing its status as a singular travel destination.

Washaway Café: A revived icon

Situated on the scenic Avatele Beach, the Washaway Café has long been a staple of Niue's dining scene. After a three-year hiatus, it has made a grand return, boasting significant upgrades like an expanded covered deck and increased seating. Its standout feature? An "honesty bar" system, perhaps the last in existence, where patrons serve themselves and tally up their own bill. Open only on Sundays, this café is renowned for its straightforward yet scrumptious menu, featuring burgers and fish sandwiches. All ingredients are fresh: bread is baked daily, patties are crafted by hand, and the fish is rod-and-reel caught by the owner, Willie.

Inu Hake: Local brews

Enter Inu Hake, Niue's latest addition, translating to "drink up" in the local language. This micro-brewery prides itself on hand-crafted beers and ciders, each infused with a touch of Niue, from locally-sourced vanilla to native honey. Among their signature brews are a vanilla chocolate stout, a honey-infused beer, and a tropical fusion of pineapple and coconut. For those keen on sampling, Inu Hake offers tasting trays. But the real showstopper is the Ark, a repurposed boat now serving as a bar. Right next to the Ark is Kai Ika, a restaurant offering a blend of Japanese dishes and pizzas.

Niue champions sustainability

Despite its small population, Niue is making significant strides in sustainable marine practices, particularly in fishing, diving, and overall ocean health.

The nation has taken a pioneering step by dedicating 100% of its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) to the Niue Nukutuluea Marine Park. Spanning an impressive 317,500 square kilometres, the park is divided into five marine resource use zones, with 40% designated as a no-take area.

Niue's approach prioritises a balance between economic growth and environmental preservation. By favouring low-impact tourism over commercial fishing, the island ensures a more sustainable income. A majority of the fish served in local restaurants are line-caught daily by charter operators or local Vaka (fishing canoes). This tourism-centric approach not only benefits the marine ecosystem but also bolsters the local economy, as tourists spend on various amenities during their stay.

In a bid to protect its marine ecosystem, local dive operators have initiated a programme to remove the coral-damaging Drupella Snails. This initiative has successfully removed over 50,000 snails, leading to a noticeable improvement in reef health. These snails, once extracted, find purpose either as food for village elders or as material for local artisans crafting pendants.

Furthermore, in collaboration with Niue Tourism, efforts are underway to restore corals and establish coral nurseries, especially after cyclone-induced damages. These conservation activities are being transformed into unique tourist experiences, further intertwining sustainability with tourism.

Niue Tourism recently celebrated its annual "Rally of the Rock" event, drawing 24 enthusiastic participants. The adrenaline-pumping 5-stage race kicked off in the village of Mutalau and concluded in Avatele. The event was a hit, promising even more excitement for its 2024 edition, with packages already available for purchase in New Zealand. Additionally, adventure enthusiasts can look forward to the return of the "Rockman Adventure Race Week" this November. Hawaiian Airlines, the largest commercial flight operator in Hawaii, has recently introduced its luxurious "Leihōkū Suites" on their Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. While the airline continues to operate its main hub at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, it also maintains a secondary hub at Kahului Airport on Maui. In the wake of the Maui wildfires, Hawaiian Airlines has been a significant contributor to relief efforts. The airline prioritised the evacuation of displaced residents and visitors, as well as the transportation of first responders, operating hundreds of flights and carrying more than 17,000 people out of Kahului Airport. Over 54,000 pounds of essential supplies, including medical equipment and animal kennels, were also transported to Maui in the critical response period following the fires. West Maui to welcome back visitors in October

In the wake of the devastating Maui wildfires, Hawaii Tourism Oceania is encouraging responsible and compassionate travel to the island. The Hawaii Community Foundation activated the Maui Strong Fund to provide financial resources to support the immediate and long-term recovery needs for the people and places affected by the Maui wildfires.

Many visitors to Maui have enjoyed the historic and cultural sites of Lahaina and neighbouring Kaanapali Beach. The devastation that occurred and the use of the accommodations outside of the area to house people who have lost their homes, means that West Maui was discouraged as place for visitors.

Fiji Airways ushers in a New Era with the Airbus A350

Fiji's skies just got a little more modern! National carrier, Fiji Airways recently unveiled its two latest acquisitions. First, the cutting-edge Airbus A350-900XWB, christened the Island of Beqa. The Island of Beqa is the third A350 to grace Fiji Airways' fleet, reflecting the airline's forward-thinking approach.

On top of that, Fiji Airways added a fourth Airbus A350-900 XWB to its lineup, and reached a key sustainability goal by utilising Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for the first time. At the 2023 World Airline Awards held during the Paris Air Show, Fiji Airways soared to the top, clinching the title of Skytrax Best Airline in Australia and the Pacific. This marks a significant milestone as it's the first time Fiji's flagship carrier has secured this honour. On top of that, the airline took home the Skytrax Best Airline Staff in Australia and the Pacific award for the fourth consecutive year. Last year, Fiji Airways stood third, trailing behind giants Qantas and Air New Zealand. However, this year, they've surpassed their bigger competitors, claiming the top spot in the Australia and Pacific category.

The result reflects the airline’s consistent focus on delivering top-notch service –delivered with natural Fijian warmth and hospitality! It should also be noted that the awards are based solely on customer feedback - with over 20 million entries, the survey evaluated more than 325 airlines before finalising the results.

Business Class Goes to a New Level

Business class travellers flying with Fiji Airways are in for a treat. Not only will they have exclusive access to the Premier Lounge at Nadi Airport, but they can also stay connected throughout their journey on the A350 with complimentary in-flight internet.

Economy class isn't left behind. The A350 cabin is set in a 3-3-3 layout, with 39 Bula Space Seats offering a 34” pitch and a 6-degree recline. The remaining 262 economy seats provide a 31-32” pitch and the same recline. All economy seats come equipped with a 12” monitor, 15 minutes of free inflight Wi-Fi, a USB port, and in-seat power for every three seats, ensuring passengers remain entertained and charged up throughout their journey!

Shangri-La Yanuca Island welcomes new Italian chef

Shangri-La Yanuca Island is renowned for its exceptional dining options. The resort recently announced the appointment of Manuel Fernando Agostino as the new Italian chef for its Golden Cowrie Coastal Italian Restaurant. Manuel, originally from Italy, brings a wealth of experience from fine dining establishments and luxury hotels around the world. His culinary journey includes stints at prestigious venues like Badrutt's Palace Hotel, Nobu Restaurant, La Môme Cannes, Cecconi's Mayfair in London, and Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Switzerland.

Outrigger Fiji unveils first phase of major refurbishment

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, located on Viti Levu's Coral Coast, has recently completed the first stage of an extensive refurbishment project that began in October 2022. The first phase of the renovation includes 16 upgraded premium Bures and the introduction of a new "Premium Ocean View" room category. These 46 rooms, originally part of the "Lagoon Wing," are located at the heart of the resort and feature contemporary design, ocean views, and the resort's signature Talai Butler service.

The second phase of the refurbishment is already underway, focusing on the main accommodation wings, remaining Bures, and the main buffet restaurant and lobby. The entire transformation is expected to be completed by November 2023. The resort has remained open throughout the project, ensuring minimal impact on guest experience and operations.

Chantara is one of our favourite family dining spots (anywhere in Denarau). The vibrant restaurant offers a feast of Thai flavours and aromas. And the open layout provides views that complement the ambiance, complete with a soothing waterfall backdrop! In short, it’s relaxed and family-friendly. The menu features Thai classics like Pad Thai, Panang Curry, Thai Basil Stir Fry and so on. And not to mention a long list of yummy appetisers like crispy sweet corn and deep fried chicken wings. Chantara go out of their way to use the freshest possible ingredients and the result is delicious, authentic Thai that everyone will enjoy.

Basilico: Italian comfort food

Basilico is where the warmth of Italian cuisine meets the welcoming spirit of Fijian hospitality. The restaurant has a real family-friendly vibe, i.e. perfect for a relaxed meal and no need to worry about ‘shooshing’ the kids. Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort recently celebrated Fiji's rich artistic culture with its Art Vibes Exhibition. First Spartan Trifecta for Fiji

Fiji is set to host its first-ever Spartan Trifecta from November 9th to 12th. This challenging event is part of the international Spartan Events calendar and aims to push participants to their physical and mental limits! Achieving the Trifecta involves completing three iconic Spartan race formats in a single season: the Sprint, Super, and either the Beast or Ultra. Participants who complete all three earn a unique medal symbolising their accomplishment. The event, supported by Fiji Airways, the official event airline, will be an annual fixture in Fiji for the next three years. It's expected to attract over 2,000 international competitors during this period. The races will feature a variety of challenges, from scaling walls to navigating mud pits, allowing participants of all fitness levels to test themselves.

Hosted at Aviva Racecourse in Sabeto, Nadi, the event has the backing of Tourism Fiji and local landowners. It promises to be a highlight on Fiji's international sporting calendar for years to come.

Malolo Island Resort scoops it up sweet treats

Malolo Island Resort has introduced a delightful new feature that is sure to please! The resort recently opened the Malolo Coastal Cones Ice Cream Parlour. Located near the pools and the Tween/Teen Lounge, the parlour offers a daily-changing menu of soft-serve ice cream flavours – including local favorites like ripe vudi banana, coconut, and passionfruit, as well as classic options like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.

All ice creams are made in-house by the resort's team of pastry chefs, using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Plus, they're gluten-free. Guests can also customise their ice cream with a variety of toppings and sauces, from red velvet cake and caramel popcorn to hot fudge and berry drizzle. While we don't normally share recipes, we've received feedback that authentic Pacific recipes would be a delightful treat. It offers a chance to savour a taste of the Pacific – a perfect teaser for those looking forward to a Pacific journey.

To kick things off, we're sharing a dish straight from the kitchen of Little Polynesian Resort in Rarotonga.

This recipe, brimming with a blend of unique ingredients and tropical flavours, promises to whisk your palate away to a Pacific haven. So, throw on your apron and prepare for a culinary escape!

Ingredients:

• Freshly baked sourdough bread

• Ripe tomatoes, diced

• Crumbled feta cheese

• Pesto

• Finely chopped spring onion

• Chopped sundried tomatoes

• Pinch of garlic

• Finely chopped red onions

• Chunky chopped olives

• Squeeze of tangy lemon juice

• Pinch of salt & pepper

• Drizzle of olive oil

• Fresh finely chopped basil & a few sprigs to dress the top

• Balsamic reduction – drizzled on top

• Garnished with parmesan crisps (melted parmesan spread, that is dried broken up when dried)

Preparation:

1. Begin by gently toasting the sourdough slices to achieve the perfect crunch.

2. In a mixing bowl, combine the diced tomatoes, feta, spring onion, sundried tomatoes, garlic, red onions, olives, chopped basil and a few light drizzles of olive oil.

3. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the mixture and season with a pinch of black pepper and salt for that unique Polynesian twist.

4. Give it a gentle toss, allowing the flavours to meld together.

5. Spread the pesto across each sourdough slices.

6. Generously spoon the refreshing Polynesian mixture onto each slice, ensuring that every bite is bursting with tropical flavours.

7. Drizzle a touch of balsamic reduction and finish with a garnish of basil and parmesan crisps and serve!

Once you've prepared this tantalising dish, it's time to enjoy paradise on a plate that will let the flavours transport you to the pristine beaches of the Cook Islands. Extensive upgrades for Motu Beachfront Art Villas

Since Rose and John Dunn took over Motu Beachfront Art Villas a few years ago, they've been committed to rejuvenating this unique art resort. The couple, have almost completed a series of upgrades that include new thatched roofs, modernised interiors, and private sun decks.

The focus has now shifted to the gardens, grounds, and beach. The gardens have been re-landscaped with organic shapes, native plants, and local granite rocks, creating a serene atmosphere. The beach, affected by last winter's cyclone season, has been replenished with fresh white sand. Motu holds the distinction of being the Pacific's first art resort. Proceeds from its operation go towards supporting Pacific artists and contributing to education and healthcare in the Cook Islands.
