PRESIDENT’S KORNER By Liz Poniatowski Hi everyone. Can you believe another month has gone by already? With this pandemic it seems that the days are dragging on, but the months are flying by! I must begin with an apology to Tracy Messina. In last month’s Tower I called her Tracy Morgan. Tracy, please accept my apology! Last month was a busy one but some things that were in the Tower were changed after it was published. With the ever-changing pandemic restrictions your best place to get the most up to date and accurate information is to always verify by checking out our website: Del TuraHOA.com and our electronic board. Barbara Schmoltze and Bertie Dugo brought another virtual coffee hour to you that was posted on our website for all to see. Thanks to those ladies for keeping this community up to date on what’s going on. We are now in the busiest time of year, December. Although we are all very disappointed that we won’t get to listen to the angelic voices of our very own Del Tura Choralaires this season we are hoping that we will get to hear them in the very near future. The Christmas Golf Cart Parade is still being planned for Sunday, the 6th. Both HOA and HTA are sponsoring a Del Tura Charity Christmas Food & Toy Drive to support the Children’s Advocacy Center and RCMA on the 12th of December and I have no doubt that you will all be generous with your donations this time of year to those less fortunate. Wednesday, 15 December is our monthly birthday celebration in the Starlight Ballroom between 1 and 3 PM. And folks, let’s not forget helping out our Holiday Decorating committee…Leon Buss needs more money for those lights that make ours the most attention getting community! He is always available to collect donations. The HOA has held several meetings that were open to our HOA members. Although we are not getting a big turnout we will continue to have the meetings in the clubhouse, when

possible, to allow you to hear first-hand what the HOA is doing for this community. In our monthly management meeting with Fred Taylor we found out that a few of the projects that were scheduled for completion by the end of this year have been delayed until Spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Three of those projects are the Starlight Ballroom lighting project, replacing the existing window film in the Starlight Ballroom and to upgrade our STOP and EXIT signs with reflective material. Please also note that the clubhouse is open for resident use by appointment only through the HTA management office during the hours of 8am – 5pm. Residents must call the office and book the room through Colleen or Julie, do not contact the HOA office at this time. Residents must wear masks when inside and the type of activities allowed are at the management’s discretion. Card playing is still not allowed at this time. The HOA BOD has monthly meetings with HTA management where we bring your suggestions/concerns to their attention. Please continue to use the online suggestion box for this purpose. We need everyone’s eyes to help us spot the issues that need attention so we can bring it up at the meetings. The Board would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and whatever other holiday you celebrate at this time of year. We hope you get to spend some time with family and friends. Let us all pray for peace and an end to this pandemic so that we can all get back to enjoying life again without having to social distance. Until that happens please continue to practice social distancing, mask wearing, hand washing and just being mindful of your surroundings to help keep not only yourself but everyone else safe and healthy this time of year. And, for the last time, this year I wish to thank all of our wonderful volunteers. Del Tura would not be our Paradise without you! Happy Holidays and stay safe! Until next year….

NEW SUGGESTION BOX You can now send your suggestions to your HOA office at the following email address: DTHOASuggestionBox@gmail.com. With the current pandemic situation and everyone not readily having access to suggestion boxes in the Starlight Ballroom and the HOA Office the HOA Board created the new email address to make it easy for you to send your suggestions to us! Each Suggestion MUST have your NAME, STREET ADDRESS and PHONE NUMBER on

it along with your suggestion that you would like the HOA Board to address with Hometown America. Along with the suggestion you should write a brief solution to help us address your concerns more quickly. You will be notified upon receipt, when your suggestion is brought before the BOD, and what actions will be taken with it. Please let us know what your concerns are so we can make Del Tura our continuing Paradise! ~ Your HOA Board of Directors

REFLECTIONS “Finding Christmas in Our Hearts” As we approach the Christmas holidays many of us seem to be having difficulty finding the spirit that we need in order to begin preparing for this joyous time of year. Our bodies may be willing, but our hearts are heavily ladened; filled with sadness of what this Pandemic has caused, yet hopeful that a vaccine will be developed soon. I do believe, my dear friends, that we have what we need to get us through these overwhelming times! If the Pandemic has taught us anything it has forced us to look deep inside of ourselves and retrieve those special gifts that we have been blessed with, faith, love, grace, family, friends. Sometimes we tend to take these treasured gifts for granted but they have been our saving graces over the years and will continue to lead us through the dark clouds and back into the sunshine once again. We, as a community, have so many special saving graces to be thankful for. Our friendships that have turned into family just didn’t happen overnight. Over the years many of us have created lasting bonds. We have prayed together through the sad times and helped each other celebrate the happiest of times. I have a strong faith that

By Dianne J. Roderick these gifts, we have been blessed with, will get us through this holiday season together. Sharing these gifts with others is something we do very well here in our little Paradise. I don’t think we ever stop to realize how many lives have been touched by the kindness of so many that humbly and unselfishly give of themselves each day. That gift of kindness has encouraged so many of us to be hopeful and become stronger once again; each receiving a renewed sense of purpose to get them through the ups and downs of life. Christmas gatherings will look quite different this year and we will all be celebrating the day with mixed emotions. Our families may be near, or very far away, but as we share the excitement of the day with them, and talk about what was found beneath the tree, our main focus will be on the love that surrounds the tree. We will share and focus on the blessings that do not come in the form of a package but on those gifts that are “found within our hearts”. Our personal conversations will vary from family to family but the one thing that we will all have in common are the prayers that we have for our loved ones well-being throughout the holidays and the coming year. Merry Christmas & God Bless!

CALLING ALL HOA MEMBERS! By Tracy Messina During this time of restrictions due to the pandemic, the HOA Board has been busy putting some plans together, but we need your help. We understand that all of you are pandemic weary. Well, here is your chance to get ready for when we can all once again socialize without masks and distance. We are looking for volunteers to form new or join existing committees and plan some fun events for our community. All we are asking for is some of your time and a little labor to get our fellow residents active again (when the time comes).

Do you have something that you are passionate about? Maybe you have experience setting up banquets or organizing sales or maybe you just want to help and join in the fun. It makes no difference; we would really like to have you join in our events. All those who are interested in participating in our future events should drop a note off at the HOA Office with your name, phone number and your area of interest, experience, etc. or you can simply email your information to messina_ tracy@yahoo.com. We sincerely hope you will take this opportunity to get involved with your community.

2020 BLOOD DRIVE UPDATE By Dennis Cottini Due to the present restrictions that we now need to follow regarding the virus, I’ve decided not to conduct our usual Blood Drive at this time. Perhaps when this pandemic subsides, hopefully early to mid-next year, Del Tura will again continue with our Blood Drive tradition. As an alternative, please feel free to go to the

Cape Coral Hospital to donate blood. The address is 636 Del Prado Blvd. in Cape Coral. The hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:00-4:30 and Tuesday, 8:00-7pm. For eligibility questions, please call Shannon Flory @ 239-424-3828. Thank you for your support and if you have any questions for me, please call 847-707-1435.

IN MEMORY OF BETTY DEWILDE On August 20th, 2020, our summer sun became a little dimmer. That is when Betty DeWilde, beloved wife of Pete DeWilde, and treasured friend to so many of us here in Del Tura, passed away. She left us with so many touching memories, for she lived as we all hope to- with a love of everyone around her. Betty and Pete met in Woodstown, New Jersey, when Pete was 47 years old. Both had grown children from earlier marriages. Pete worked for the Federal government, as an employee of the USDA, and would go for lunch each day to the Woodstown Diner, where Betty worked as a waitress. Soon, Pete became the State Director of the USDA, and worked through two presidential administrations and part of a third. He left to become CEO of a large landfill and re-cycling center. But it was the Woodstown Diner, where Betty had waitressed since she was very young (a total of 45 years all together), where their love story began. Betty and Pete were married for 36 years, and “never had an argument,” according to Pete, “because Betty always won.” They came to Del Tura in 1998 and bought their house. Then followed about four years of ‘back and forth’, until 2002, when they moved here to live year-round. But retirement was not in their minds when they moved here. Both of them shared a love of people and had always gravitated to jobs where they had an interaction with others. Betty waitressed at the restaurant in Del Tura through three successive

ownerships. Pete worked in the cart barn, then ran the cart barn until taking a job as a ranger and starter on the golf course, where we are happy to still see him today. Betty had a love of the game of golf for many years. She joined the 18-hole women’s league in Del Tura and has had a total of six holes-inone, 5 at Del Tura and one up north. She was the winner of the SJGA women’s Senior Championship Tournament at the Valleybrook Golf Club in NJ on July 24,1996. Betty and Pete have also enjoyed many couple’s games here at Del Tura with the Friday Scrambles and the Couples League, and various couple’s tournaments. Pete noted that an engraved plate with Betty’s name is on the 18hole women’s memorial bench. Betty’s life was clearly an inspiration to us all. Her love of family, friends, and people was something she lived every day. It is not surprising that Pete has received 85 cards from friends after Betty’s passing. And Pete would like to thank each and every one of you for your kindness, your calls, your cards, food, and expressions of friendship. They are appreciated more than words can say. When asked what message Betty might like to leave with us all, Pete was quick to say, “She loved Del Tura. She loved the people. They have felt like family, and there are so many caring people here.” He noted how people take the time to reach out; to make the small gesture of help and friendship. That is so important, and so appreciated. He added, “Everybody needs people. This place sure fills the bill.”

BRICKS FOR VETERANS By John Brassem REMEMBERING VETERANS AT DEL TURA Yesterday, a couple of us were having a cold beer at the “Courtyard”. We are “duffers” and complaining, as golfers do, about the fourth hole on the North Course. John had just lofted two pristine golf balls into the small pond that “protects”, (huh?), the hole. Harry, an excellent golfer, has not lost any balls to the hungry fourth – or so he says. He quickly changed the topic – just in time. “My son called last night,” Harry reported. “He’s been on a secret mission to the Middle East…got back home a few weeks ago.” “The local American Legion gave him a wonderful coming home dinner and a plaque for one of the legions’ dining room walls – probably squeezed in with other veterans’ plaques.” Paul chimed in. “With all the veterans living at Del Tura, why can’t we figure out a way to remember their service, like they do at The Legion or Lake Fairways? Like Fairways has a wonderful engraved “Brick Program”.” John asks: “Where’s Lake Fairways and what’s a ‘Brick Program’?” Paul enthusiastically responds. “Lake Fairways is a golf community just like Del Tura. As a matter of fact, it’s just down the street from DT.” “Go on!”

“Their brick program is unique but should be perfect for us. All DT veterans, no matter which branch, or type of duty, can purchase an engraved brick. The standard, red, square brick can have the serviceman’s or servicewoman’s name, rank, branch of service—and who knows what else, (anything that space allows). “Here comes the best part. Each brick costs only $30.” John sarcastically responds. “Yeah, so each veteran has a brick with their name on it. What do they do with it?” Astute question, John.” “The idea is to build a commemorative tribute to all males and females that have served in the military service for this country and live—or have lived—in Del Tura. All bricks become part of a walking monument built a ground level. To see a loved veterans’ tribute, one has only to walk and see his or her name. “The brick, with the veteran’s name, rank, and branch of service will live in perpetuity…as long as there is a Del Tura. This idea has now turned into reality and the Del Tura Bricks4Vets program has been formed. The Del Tura Bricks4Vets program team are John Brassem, Joe Valentino, Tom Zeigler and Meg Valentino. The team has met with Fred Taylor, Hometown America and obtained approval and support for the Del Tura Bricks4Vets program. Further information on Del Tura Bricks4Vets can be found on the website www.deltura-hoa. com or email questions to dtbricks4vets@ gmail.com.

It’s Mike Johnson, your Gate Gabber, back with another tale... Let’s call this story, Midnight Snacks..... The overnight shift at the front gate takes a little getting used to. To say that your sleep pattern is disrupted is an understatement. The overnight work hours cover the period of time from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following day. I do this Friday night and Saturday night. By the time Wednesday rolls around I’m just getting back into the swing of things as far as my sleep pattern is concerned. Then, it’s Friday again...! So, one day, about two- and one-half years ago, when I first started doing this job, I had forgotten to make anything or bring anything to eat overnight. I did have water, coffee and two sodas. 1:00 AM rolls around and I’m starting to get a little bit hungry. Obviously, once you’re at work there is no relief there is no leaving your post. You’re stuck there till morning. Just when I had resigned myself to the fact that there was going to be nothing to eat, a car pulls up to the gate. I recognize the fellow’s face, but I don’t know what his name is. I do know he’s a resident of Del Tura. He rolls down his window, holds out his hand and in it is a sandwich, in a

box from Domino’s. He says,.. “ Here’s a little something for you brother... “ And, before I can thank him properly, he drives off. This happens again three weeks later. The same fellow pulls up to the gate at approximately the same time, holds out his hand and in it is a Whopper from Burger King. It’s still hot and it’s delicious…!! This generous individual has stopped at the gate, while I’m working, probably twenty times over the past two- and one-half years. He brings a surprise Midnight Snack each time. It could be a chicken parmesan wedge, It could be garlic knots with alfredo sauce, it could be a Big Mac or, it could be half a pizza. Whatever it is I am most appreciative and let him know it. Finally, I learned his name and, it should be no surprise to the Del Tura community that this kind individual is Colton James Miller. He asks for nothing and he gives his Midnight Snacks with a smile. From talking to the other employees at the gate I’ve learned I’m not the only beneficiary of Colton’s generosity... I’d like to say publicly, “Thank You Colton”. Your Midnight Snacks are always appreciated... So, this is the end of this story, from your Gate Gabber... Be on the lookout for next month’s issue and next month’s story......

THE PANDEMIC AND POSITIVITY By Cindy Swisher

At first, having to cook every night, endless games of backgammon, and hours of tv watching and Three months before the Pandemic hit, I was living book reading had me somewhat depressed. My children are a list of the restaurants I wanted to try and the places I spread out all over the country. Until this year I’ve wanted to go. We tried to attend as many community taken my trips, and theirs, to visit for granted, but activities as we could. I still want to try all those restaurants on my list, to take an airboat ride through the Everglades, and to start a new hobby or two here at Del Tura. I will never lose my itch to travel – to see new places and experience new cultures. What has changed is the value I place on those things and the priority I give them. I know that the most important things I do are the things – the simple things – that build the relationships I hold dear and keep me focused on what’s truly important. Someday, God willing, I’ll get to see some of the places I’ve dreamed of, but if I don’t it’s okay, because I know the most important place I can be is with the people I love. I look forward to the end of COVID-19. I am truly sorry for all the tragedy it will leave in its wake. At the same time, I am grateful for the important truths it has helped me discover.

THE CAYMAN CONNECTION: By Bill Woods How the Careers of Slammin’ Sam Snead and the Golden Bear Crossed Paths at Del Tura Golf and Country Club n addition to his status in the 1980’s as world’s greatest golfer, Jack Nicklaus also had a piece of the controlling interest in the company that he had endorsed for nearly twenty years, MacGregor. Knowing that his best golfing days were behind him Nicklaus devoted more of his time and energies to golf course development and real estate acquisitions. One property in which he was particularly interested was located on the Cayman Islands. An immediate problem came to his attention and that of a Canadian conglomerate that was backing the project. There just wasn’t enough land for a hotel, marina, and regulation-sized golf course. So, what was one of the world’s most recognizable athletes to do? Nicklaus decided to put his MacGregor engineers to work developing a new golf ball that would accommodate play on a shorter or “executive” course. As Nicklaus was quoted in the Tampa Bay Times, “It is something I had been thinking about for a while: taking a golf ball and making it suit the land rather than have the land suit the golf ball.” And so was born the Cayman golf ball and the story of how the Cayman Classic came to be played in the summer of 1985 in North Fort Myers. At first glance the Cayman ball was an ugly duckling. Lighter in weight and designed to fly just over half as far as a regulation golf ball, its surface was brambled, eliciting a common reaction that the ball had “pimples and not dimples.” After pouring $100,000 into the ball’s development, the chief engineer for MacGregor claimed it could be hooked, faded, and made to back up. Putting was said to be as true as a normal ball and it could float on water (at one point Nicklaus considered putting a driving range into the ocean in front of the hotel, letting the waves “retrieve” the practice shots). Basically, it came down to Nicklaus, one of the game’s longest hitters, driving the Cayman ball about 135 yards. Perfect for a “short” or “executive” layout, allowing long par 3’s to played as par 4’s and par 4’s as par 5’s. Many par 3’s would measure less than 75 yards. The ultimate test of the ball was to put it into play with PGA professionals and, by so doing, draw national attention to the ball and to the short courses that Nicklaus envisioned. In stepped Sam Snead. There were few sports fans anywhere in the world in1985 who hadn’t heard of Sam Snead. Snead, known as “Slammin’ Sammie,” was the winner of seven majors including three Masters titles. Along with Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, Snead dominated the professional golf circuit for nearly three decades. His golfing feats were legendary, including winning 82 tour events (number one all-time tied with Tiger Woods) and being the first golf professional to shoot below his age, shooting a 66 at age 67 in a Quad Cities tournament. His straw hat became a symbol and he was known for his gentlemanly but fiercely competitive nature.

So how about convincing Sam Snead to come to southwest Florida to play in a one-day tournament using the Cayman ball? It would be fabulous publicity for the ball as well as for the Golden Bear and McGregor Sports and would, in turn, introduce a new golf course in North Fort Myers known as Del Tura Country Club. Club professionals from across Florida and further afield would be anxious to play in a tournament headlined by “Slammin’ Sammie.” It wasn’t recorded what Snead was paid to come to North Fort Myers, nor how much Nicklaus or MacGregor Sports put up as his appearance fee. What we do know is that he was approached in Chicago by the father of Del Tura’s assistant pro Keith Marks Jr. As local sportswriter Vince Smith summarized, “Keith (Sr.) was doing some teaching in Chicago and he happened to bump into Snead up there … Keith told him about our tournament …” Snead agreed to come to headline the tournament and get a look at the new Cayman ball in what became the first publicized short course tournament in the history of golf. On the evening of July 28, 1985, Snead arrived at Page Field and was picked up in a Rolls Royce and brought to Del Tura where he spent the night in a guest house. Every piece of the plan had fallen into place; the fate of the Cayman ball would be determined the next morning.

The original nine (South) was designed by architect Ron Garl, whose career spanned 250 golf courses. The construction of the entire 27 hole Del Tura course that had begun in 1983 wasn’t entirely finished. So, eighteen holes were fashioned from what was ready for play. Karl Stumpp, Del Tura’s head professional, molded an ambitious and serious test of golf. Billed as the Cayman Classic, the executive course of eighteen holes would play to a regulation par 72. Owing to the ball’s shorter flight several of the longer par threes were converted to par fours; each of the par fours were altered to par fives. The morning of the match the front-page banner of the News-Press read: Slammin’ Sam Snead tackles Del Tura with the Cayman ball. The presence of Snead drew a capacity gallery who, for $10 got to witness the tournament and received a chit for a free round of golf with cart. The format was two-man best ball with nearly 60 teams of golf professionals (mostly Florida teaching pros) competing for a purse of $6,500. Snead, partnered with Keith Marks Sr., teed off surrounded by admirers lining the first fairway. The first two holes went well with consecutive birdies but after that as the saying goes “the wheels came off.” The legendary Snead and his partner carded a 75 and the post tournament interviews were anything but positive in discussing Nicklaus’s Cayman ball. Snead didn’t like the ball (manufactured for a time as the McGregor 50) as he made plain to the sports writers in attendance. His basic criticism was the ball simply didn’t fly far enough and that the best solution for short courses was for them to reduce par and use a standard ball. He wasn’t the least impressed by staring at a ball with pimples after spending sixty years staring at dimples. Snead and his partner split $75 in prize money, just enough (smiled Snead) to pay his caddy. As golf writer Vince Smith said, “… his effervescence and that big, unusual smile rarely left as he put on a gracious exhibition for nearly 600 spectators strolling the tidy executive course.” At the end of the day the Rolls Royce and the sweet swinging Virginian Mr. Snead were on their way back to the airport for a flight to Chicago. Snead was due the next day to honor Patty Berg (winner of fifteen major women’s golf titles and Fort Myers resident) at a Wilson Sporting Goods event. By coincidence Snead had bumped into Berg’s step-mother at Del Tura and informed her that he was presenting the award to her step-daughter. As related by Vince Smith, “The 73 year-old Snead, who joined the PGA tour in 1937, considers [Patty] Berg one of the greatest women he’s ever known.” The Cayman golf ball flopped but continued to be manufactured largely as a collector’s item. The clear winner of the tournament that July day in 1985 was the Del Tura golf course. Among many plaudits earned were these, from the Fort Myers News Press: The View from the Clubhouse is Spectacular, and Florida Golfweek: The Finest Executive Golf Course We Know.

(Rain Date Monday 7th)

It’s time once again to decorate your golf carts for one of Del Tura’s most fun Holiday traditions. It is amazing to see how creative our residents can be. Last year there were more than 25 carts in the parade and so many people cheering us on from all around the community…It was great to see all the support! This year will be even better; we have a great committee with more people involved that ever before! So get those creative juices flowing and start thinking about ideas for your cart. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors and have fun at the same time! We will have PRIZE MONEY for best decorations that night! Start planning early and make sure your batteries are fully charged! The parade will begin at 6:00 pm. Of course we also welcome bicycles, motorcycles, etc., whatever glows…goes! Be sure to come early to see other carts, take pictures and have time to line up at 5:30 and award prizes. If you need help with hooking up lights, you may call Jim Stenzel 239-826-0524 or Gerry Benjamins 239-322-9866. It is up to you to get the things you need and to do the decorating…that’s 98% of the fun! Don’t wait until the last minute for their help. A map and approximate times the parade will reach your location is printed in this Tower and will be posted at all the pools. Please note…the parade will end at the corner of Las Palmas Norte and San Gabriel again this year. It’s a long parade and we lose some of the carts by then. All we need now is to have you join in and have fun! For more information or ideas, call Dusty Laurie at 239-357-4378 or Linda Storma at 239-997-9066. Thanks again for your support. Hope to see you then!

GOLD MEDAL WINNER DEL TURAN GARNERS SECOND GOLD MEDAL IN VA WRITING COMPETITION By Steve Banko Del Tura resident Steve Banko has repeated as the national Gold Medal recipient in the 2020 Veterans Administration Arts Festival. The Festival solicits entries from all 170 VA hospitals across the country. Winners are selected at each participating facility and the local winners are

then judged nationally. Banko represents the Bay Pines VA in St. Petersburg and earned the 2019 Gold Medal for his essay “Love Must Survive War,” which spoke of the enduring love that combat soldiers feel for each other. His 2020 entry, “Purple Hearts and Purple Minds,” deals with moral injuries inflicted by combat service. The essay speaks to the wounds to the mind and soul: “But what happens when the wound isn’t visible, when we are wounded in mind and spirit? The reward is, at best, ignorance and at worst, scorn for being too

weak to stand up to the rigors of combat. Afflicted with moral injury soldiers and veterans are left to sort out those injuries for ourselves. “There are no Purple Hearts for those suffering with purple minds, battered and bruised taken in battle.” Banko served sixteen months in combat in Vietnam and earned four Purple Hearts, four Bronze Stars, and two Silver Stars. He is the author of a novel about the war, For No Good Reason, and has recently finished his second novel. He has spoken to audiences across the country on issues of war and peace.

CREATIVE WRITERS WORKSHOP By Nancy Davy I am pleased to report that our Creative Writers Workshop is already going strong. We have been meeting outdoors and socially distancing, and I’d like to assure anyone who may be considering joining us that safety is our priority. As some of our members have not yet returned, we have begun

with exercises that would allow us to ‘loosen up’ and just write, without requirements as far as structure and form. Our first topic is one we can all relate to, as it has affected us all this year. The challenge is to think of the pandemic & how you have been touched by it The idea is to view the negatives and discover how we all have the power within us to find

something positive. Remember that the ability to express and share our thoughts and emotions on paper is always a positive. It can be reparative, and it can be healing – not only to us, but to those who read the words we’ve written. I have selected some of the wonderful responses I received from our group. I hope you enjoy!!

2020 THANKSGIVING & CHRISTMAS BASKETS TO ALL DEL TURA RESIDENTS As many of you know when the Holidays roll around the Basket Program asks for donations of non-perishable food and or money to help the Needy Families we contribute to. However, this holiday season we face a very determined virus that is not kind to people our age and we feel that it would be unfair to ask for people

to go door to door collecting. It is therefore, with a VERY HEAVEY HEART, to inform you that we will be unable to have a Normal Basket Program this Year. We do expect to continue the tradition in 2021. We realize that of all years this is a year when the needy families need the most help. So, with funds left over from last year we plan to provide 70 Turkeys and 70 Hams to Nation Charities to distribute to families

in need. This is something my husband and I can do without putting anyone else in harm’s way. DEL TURA Residents have always been very Generous, and we HOPE we will be able to count on you in 2021

Thank You, Charlene Ruotolo Basket Chairperson

MONTHLY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS By Bertie Dugo In October the HOA started something new to allow people to socialize once again in small groups. We are having a monthly birthday celebration which is held in the Starlight Ballroom between 1 and 3 PM on a selected day each month. Our First celebration was a huge success with 20-24 HOA members attending! That was an impressive number considering it was our first one. The cupcakes from Publix were delicious. You had your choice of vanilla, chocolate, or rainbow. After the celebration we were given a lot of positive feedback from the attendees and residents that were unable to attend were disappointed that they could not

make it but were very thankful to hear we were doing it. Masks must be worn when not eating or drinking and social distancing is enforced. We can seat 4 to a table so if you plan on coming alone there will be room for you to socialize with others! Each birthday person is able to bring one guest with them too. For those who are celebrating birthday this month you can contact me, Bertie Dugo with an RSVP to let me know you will be able to join in on the fun. This month’s celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, December 15, at the Starlight Ballroom between 1-3. I am looking forward to seeing you there and to help celebrate your special day.

ACTIONS NOW WILL BENEFIT OUR GRANDCHILDREN By Rosemary Eiden When a handful of people and myself started the Wild Ones Native Plant Enthusiasts group back in the 90’s we had no idea of all the benefits it would bring to us. Many of our home landscapes were converted and many birds, butterflies, owls, and up the food chain animals came to our yards. With a little education we could then help others with their garden endeavors. When I left the northern group we had 300 members. I am learning that there are people equally enthusiastic about natives here in Florida. So far in Del Tura, 5 have converted parts of their yards into native landscapes. We are all thrilled about the responses from the wildlife. We are very happy that we are contributing to their success. It’s a small effort for the greater good. But don’t just take my word for it. Guru, Doug Tallamy has come out with a new book, Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach To Conservation That Starts In Your Yard. Doug Tallamy is a leading authority on native plants. You can get the audio book right from our Lee County Library system or from Amazon for $12.00. He says, “Earth’s resources are not infinite” and “Actions now will benefit our grandchildren.” These are powerful words and

I am sure you have heard them before but the truth is if we don’t start now then when? Do we have that much more time to procrastinate? Right on page 51 he has actualexamples of how to shrink the lawn. On page 205 he has examples of what each of us can do. I am 71 years old and with the help of my husband we were able to convert our back yard into a native planting. My time on this planet is getting shorter and if I can still do something now I will. We started our native garden in December of 2019. Initially we put down black cloth over the lawn to make it go away, then we bought plants and took our time putting them all in. In 2 weeks we were done. Then we used pine needles raked up from our yard and the neighbors yard for mulch. With all the summer Florida rain it is now all grown in. Easy! We are looking out at the Beautyberry bushes outside our window and are noticing that all the berries have been consumed by the Mockingbirds and Jays. How delightful. We have done our job! When the next generation comes down to Florida looking to buy a home they will be pleased that right out the back they can enjoy nature.

Del Tura Garden Club News… Members will be at ‘Junk in the Trunk’ with baked goods. All proceeds will go to benefit the model native garden. The bench under the giant fig tree was dedicated to the ‘Deltura Garden Club’ on November 2nd. Native Florida seed was planted behind the bench. Chat for the garden club is on Facebook Deltura Garden Club.

Investment Lessons from 2020

As the year draws to a close, it’s fair to say that we’ve all learned something about the social, political, physical and environmental forces that have affected everyone. And, in some ways, our lives will be changed, perhaps permanently. But as an investor, what lessons can you learn from 2020? Here are some to consider: • The markets look ahead. Here’s something many investors discovered in 2020: Investment prices don’t always move in the same direction as the overall economy. This might not have seemed apparent right after the COVID-19 pandemic struck in mid-February, as the overall economy and the stock market took big hits. But just about five weeks later, the markets began a rally that lasted several months. During this time, the economy also recovered somewhat, but still remains on weak footing. What can explain this discrepancy between the markets and economic activity? Essentially, economic numbers, such as the unemployment rate and gross domestic product (GDP), reflect what’s happening today, but the markets are always looking toward tomorrow, which means they are anticipating a stronger economic recovery and the results that come with it, such as greater corporate earnings in 2021. No one can say for sure what the future holds, but you can usually know the market’s opinion by its performance. • Opportunities will always exist for investors. Although the coronavirus seems unprecedented, the equity markets have rebounded from many crises before it. From war to global financial meltdowns, the market has seen it all. But even at the height of these events, when the markets might be most affected, individual segments or industries can do well. For example, in the current environment, when many people have been forced to work and shop from home, and get their entertainment online, it’s probably not surprising that some parts of the technology sector have seen their economic activity grow, along with their stock prices. Here’s the key point: Investment opportunities always exist, especially in times of market stress – and smart investors will find them and incorporate them into their portfolios in a way that’s appropriate for their goals and risk tolerance. • Patience and discipline can pay dividends. As mentioned above, the stock market dropped sharply in the weeks immediately following the pandemic, but then gained steadily for months afterward. Investors who tried to “cut losses” and exited the market likely did so at the wrong time and missed out on the beginning of the upturn. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon – investors who overreact to market declines often find themselves on the investment sidelines just when a new rally begins. Rather than being reactive in this way, you may be better off sticking with a long-term investment strategy, and buying and selling investments only when it makes sense for your situation, such as when you need to diversify your portfolio. For many reasons, it’s unlikely that we’ll see anything exactly like 2020 again. But some of the investment lessons we learned are applicable in every year – so keep them in mind for 2021 and beyond.

7 HEALTH BENEFITS OF GOLF Numerous studies have described the many health advantages that playing even a 9-hole course can bring to someone hoping to improve their fitness levels. For many women the benefits of playing golf are even more pronounced: Reduced stress: Like all exercise, playing golf releases endorphins which are powerful and natural mood-enhancing boosts for the brain. Add to this playing in an open and natural environment and you have the ideal combination to help you relax and reduce stress.

We can help!

Call to see how we can cure the drudgery of housework, grocery shopping, driving to and from appointments and much, much more including hourly care giving in your home by a competent, background checked individual.

239-770-7711

Blood circulation: Golf is a thinking game which requires you to use your brain. Stimulating blood circulation to the brain can improve nerve cell connections and help combat the onset of dementia. Keeping active: Women tend to take up golf later in life than men. Many women begin playing the game in their 40s, 50s and 60s. It’s also a great way of meeting and staying in touch with friends. Sleep better: Regular daytime exercise means a person generally will fall asleep faster and enjoy a deeper sleep.

Bone health: Golf is great for the bones with any weight-bearing exercise capable of creating long and lean muscle mass. Strong bones are an essential way of combating various bone diseases. Bladder training: The longer you learn to hold it in on the golf course, the more you strengthen the capacity of your bladder. All around fitness: Studies have found that avid women golfers scored significantly better on reaction time, balance, sit and reach flexibility, shoulder flexibility, and grip strength in comparison to inactive women. Club Championship: The Club Championship is just around the corner. It is a 3-day event (December 9, 10th and 16th) and I encourage everyone to consider participating if your schedule permits. There will be three winners in each of the four flights and it is a fun time for all. ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DUES Don’t forget to pay your dues. Please make your check for $35 payable to DTWGA and drop it off in the Pro Shop. See you on the course!

FRIDAY SHUFFLEBOARD LEAGUE By Glenn Tointon On Friday November 13th, the “new” shuffleboard league started their season. DEL TURA SOFTBALL UPDATE By Art Keen The season is almost upon us! Hello softball fans and players. I think it is safe to assume that as of this time, most if not all of our seasonal residents are back in paradise! To recap, our intentions are to field two softball teams again this year. We have already had 3+ softball workouts and our plans are to continue them up until the season kicks off on January 4th. Right now, we are still looking to fill 30 or more roster spots. Workouts/practices are being held every Sunday (weather permitting) at 3:30pm. Just contact either Jim or myself or plan to attend on Sunday. To be eligible to compete in the league, team members must reach fifty (50) years of age in the

calendar year of league play (2021), complete an eligibility form and reside or rent in the community for a minimum of three months (90 days) during the League’s scheduled playing dates. Our games are played on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 5:30pm during the months of January, February, and March at Carmalita Fields in Punta Gorda. I can assure you that your health and safety will be of primary concern. Hope to see you on the field or in the stands when Del Tura Softball resumes this winter! THE SOCIALIZE AT A DISTANCE VEHICLE By Maureen Monroy If you are lucky enough to live in a golfcart community, you can turn the loneliness of Social Distancing into the joy of Socializing at a Distance. That’s right. Plugged in and humming away in your garage is the cure for Covid loneliness – the Socializing at a Distance Vehicle (aka a golf cart). The SDV fully meets CDC Social Distancing guidelines. • It supports 6 ft separation • It gets you outside • You avoid touching items others have touched

• And it has pockets for face masks and hand sanitizer It really does work! The Socializing at a Distance Vehicle gives easy access to friends as you drive through your neighborhood; meet friends for morning coffee in their yards; pick up a take-out meal and enjoy lunch in an SDV cluster; join an SDV prayer group; ride in an SDV parade; or surprise a friend with an SDV drive-by birthday celebration. So, turn off the TV, put down your book and get out of your house. Climb in your SDV and safely get back into enjoying your friends and neighbors... (If only there were cart paths to California and New England).

POSITIVES By Charlotte Ping Covid has actually had so many positive impacts on my life that I was totally amazed. First of all, I am not a social butterfly, so being alone does not bother me at all. I enjoy my own company and can’t think of anyone else more intelligent to talk to. (lol). I have so many hobbies and activities that keep me busy, so I have very little idle time. It’s been like a snowball for me, rolling down a hill that keeps getting bigger. A magic snowball of opportunities to learn about myself and learn new things. Mainly, I was amazed at how much money I have saved by not eating out or socializing

with my friends. I didn’t realize how much I was spending doing those things. By cooking at home, which I enjoy doing anyway, I learned to expand my culinary skills by trying new recipes with foods I had never cooked with before. I think the most important thing was learning patience. Everybody’s phase of life has been changed and slowed down. Especially waiting in lines at a social distance, waiting for deliveries; even the mail seems slower. Waiting means more time for yourself ... to meditate, study and catch up on all the things I was meaning to do someday, when I had the time. Well, I do have the time now and I am doing it. It’s enjoyable and rewarding.

DEL TURA FRUIT TREE PROJECT – YEAR END REPORT October 2019 – September 2020 This year, we picked a total of 3,920 pounds of Avocados, Lemons, Mangoes, Oranges and Carambola (aka Starfruit). We picked the fruit from fourteen residences; some were picked two or three times. The total from one amazing tree was 1,420 pounds! Our thanks to all the residents who donated their fruit. The fruit was taken to the CCMI Café and Soup Kitchen. They either use it in the preparation of their meals or pass it on to those in need.

AT THE HYDRANT By Justine Fitzgibbons If Dogs Could Talk Meet Buddy & Blair, new to Del Tura! Buddy loves Del Tura’s dog park, even when no one is there because he likes to sniff around the entire park. He is a whippet/hound mix who was rescued from a rescue group in the mountains of NC. He came into a pack with two other dogs and it was ruff going at first, but he was easily trained and socialized into quite the ‘chill’ dog he is now. Buddy enjoys two walks daily as well as the frequent visit to the park and evening rides in the golf cart. Blair is a border collie/lab mix and spent the entire first year of her life at a Humane Society in NC. Within 5 minutes of coming to her forever home, she owned the couch and became a velcro dog. Blair is a little older and has knee and hip problems, so she doesn’t get to walk as much or go to the dog park. Buddy is known for keeping his nails clean and Blair for keeping the floor clean (from dropped food). Buddy and Blair are yin and yang, he is chill and the social butterfly, she is nervous and a little high-strung. Both are spoiled to the max and have their humans well trained

to wait on them hand and foot and take them in the car at every opportunity. See you Monday!
