Your local guide to food & drink on the Isle of Wight

Character Inns Character Inns is an Island based, group of Inns and Restaurants. Heavily orientated to the needs of Island visitors it offers three distinct areas of hospitality. For the largely, but not exclusive, adult visitor with more discerning tastes in food and wine there is the Bugle Coaching Inn in Yarmouth, The Buddle Inn in Niton and The Village Inn in Bembridge. All a must for connoisseurs of quality dining at great value. The need for family friendly dining has not been overlooked. The White Lion in Niton, The Pig and Whistle in Shanklin and The Bugle Family Inn in Brading all offer a fun filled dining experience. From bouncy castles to ball pits, summer magic shows to Punch and Judy and all with floodlit gardens these family friendly Inns have it all. As an added bonus they offer ‘Kids Eat Free*’ all year round. The perfect choice for families. The demand for contemporary dining is well established and in the renowned group of Lugleys Restaurants situated in Newport and Cowes, dining is taken to another level. Stunning menus created by Dorchester Hotel chef Musa Jobi create the focal point for a memorable visit to these elegant restaurants. Character Inns – Island Family Inns and the Lugleys Group - highly recommended! St. Catherine’s Lighthouse - a short but refreshing walk away from the Buddle Inn, Niton.

Taste of the Wight An introduction by the Isle of Wight High Sheriff and hotelier Nick Hayward An annual visitor to the Island since childhood, and with family roots in Seaview since the 1800s, Nick bought the Seaview Hotel with his wife Nicky in 1980. For 25 years the Haywards ran the hotel and restaurant, building an award winning business and a reputation for excellence. The hotel’s extensive use of local produce was widely recognised, resulting in their final accolade of the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development. Nick Hayward took over as High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight in April 2012. As High Sheriff I travelled the length and breadth of the Island and it has been a joy to meet so many dedicated food producers and enthusiastic professional young chefs. After a lifetime in the industry I was particularly interested in our local food and know how blessed we are on this glorious Island. I painted the horns of the prize beast at the Gilten Market in December and then we roasted a joint of the beef at Christmas, it melted in the mouth and was some of the finest I ever tasted. I found myself, on one of the few spare moments during my year, on the sea wall in Ventnor with my family eating fresh local lobster, chips and mayonnaise; food for a king at take-away prices. Historically the Island, loved by the Romans, has always produced the highest quality food and wine. From the 16th century onwards naval ships stopped to pick up the freshest supplies before sailing off around the world. In Victorian times Kings and Queens, aristocracy, poets and writers flocked to the Island to savour its beauty and fare. It continues to produce some of the finest food in the country, served in some of the top restaurants in the south of England. Regardless of whether you are a holidaymaker or resident, remember to ensure you eat Island grown food, honey and garlic, chicken, lamb, beef and pork, potatoes, tomatoes, asparagus and cauliflowers, the list goes on and on. Accompanied of course by our delicious beer, wine or even our lovely local milk.

Welcome... The Isle of Wight is such an exciting place to be at the moment. In fact it always has been. Once Queen Victoria turned the spotlight onto this unique corner of her Empire, the Island became fashionable with artists, poets and celebrities... as it still is. Visitors still appreciate the Isle of Wight’s beautiful beaches, secluded woodlands and pretty market towns. The Island is also world-famous for sailing, geology and pop festivals. But do you want to know its best-kept secret? The food. As the rest of the world wakes up to the local food revolution, the Isle of Wight has long been leading the way. The record-breaking sunshine helps ripen sweet tomatoes, fresh asparagus and aromatic garlic. Rolling chalk downland and lowland meadows are rich in flowers, perfect for grazing cattle and sheep. The sixty miles of dramatic coast has been fished for centuries for delicious seafood. But even with its obvious natural advantages, the Island’s food offering would be nothing without the profusion of talented and award-winning chefs, food producers, farmers and bakers. People who nurture the plants and animals; and those working unseen in the Island’s kitchens creating fabulous dishes, and artisans producing their own special cakes, preserves, beers and breads.

Fine Dining These days, the appetite for high quality food is at a peak. Consumers are increasingly interested in the provenance of what they eat and its presentation - and above all they want their meals to be delicious. However, from the outside it’s not always easy to tell if a restaurant is going to deliver the goods, which is why various institutions have established awards for foods. It’s no small achievement to win an award and the Isle of Wight has its fair share of accolades. Ventnor has the lion’s share of accredited eateries including the highly-praised Royal Hotel, which has been listed in every Michelin Guide since it was first published in 1911 and has held two AA rosettes for over fifteen years. In the east Wight, the historic Priory Bay Hotel, with its estate of gardens, woodlands and even its own beach, has an AA rosette for its fine-dining menu based around local seafood and game. The Seaview Hotel is known for its local produce; it even has its own farm. The two-rosette Lakeside Park Hotel, Wootton is a much more modern establishment where you can expect up-to-the-minute cooking techniques.

Overlooking the lake, The Lakeside Park Hotel Bar and Brasserie benefits from an open environment with contemporary decor providing a unique space in which to enjoy a relaxed dining experience for around 100 guests. Open to non-residents. Advanced bookings are advised. Our popular daily specials menu is available both lunch and dinner. OPEN DAILY Lunch 12 - 2.30pm. Dinner 6.30 - 9.30pm Ample parking available.

A visit to our award-winning restaurant will be the talking point of your stay on the Isle of Wight. ‘The owner takes food seriously; 98 per cent of guests eat in every evening. Our Sunday lunch went well beyond the usual roast (excellent), with choices such as pan-fried sea bass with fennel risotto and asparagus. In summer you can eat out on the terrace, where afternoon tea is another attraction.’ The Telegraph The Royal has achieved 2 AA Rosettes for excellent food over 15 consecutive years. Throughout the last 15 years, The Royal has has been responsible for training some of the best chefs on the Island. The Royal Hotel | Belgrave Road Ventnor | Isle of Wight | PO38 1JJ 01983 852186

d hero Oliver Stephens o o f & James Trevaskis The Priory Bay Hotel is a haven for showbiz personalities and minor royalty who are seeking to get away from it all. Up to now the hotel has not created any celebrities of its own - but this may be about to change. An Island boy who started his catering career at the Priory, head chef Oliver Stephens has returned triumphantly to his alma mater after a stint at Copenhagen’s Noma, often called ‘the world’s best restaurant’. All eyes are on the young chef and his talented sommelier James as they set out on their first full year in charge of the Priory kitchen, with even the influential Eater.com naming Oliver as one of its ‘Chefs to Watch in 2013’. Restaurants

Lugleys of Newport

The romantic dinner for two, a special occasion or the family Sunday lunch - we all enjoy a good restaurant meal and the Isle of Wight is not short of places to try. Pubs, hotels and restaurants used to be very different classes of establishment, but these days it’s sometimes hard to know which is which. Take Lugleys of Newport; once primarily a hotel, this popular venue still has five-star accommodation for guests, but is perhaps better known as a location for an intimate meal. Bembridge’s Old Village Inn - for many years a traditional village pub, has recently re-launched as a trendy steak house serving Isle of Wight beef. All year round there are restaurants serving up quality food. Most high streets have a number of such places - and in some towns they will be spoilt for choice. Cowes has a range of different dining styles, and especially in the summer there are often temporary or pop-up restaurants serving hungry sailors and other visitors who come to enjoy Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. For something more refined, look out for the sea facing New Holmwood; or enjoy a good meal overlooking the busy waterway from the huge picture windows of Lugleys of Cowes. Fine nammet.

Cafés & Tea Rooms The Isle of Wight, like most of England’s tourist destinations is famous for its cream teas, it would be easy to have a gastronomic tour of the Island which exclusively took in cafés and tea rooms. Cakes and tea can be found in abundance at the heart of the Island, at Godshill - the county’s cream tea Mecca, as well as in every other town and village. But cafes aren’t exclusively about cake and tea. At The Forum Café in Brading you can enjoy home made dishes and stunning views of Sandown Bay after exploring the superb Brading Roman Villa. At The Garlic Farm delight your tastebuds with dishes inspired by garlic hand-picked on the farm, or fabulous locally-grown food in a beautiful setting at Ventnor Botanic Gardens. The Quay Arts Centre has a waterside terrace which is a great place to sit and have lunch on a sunny day; you can even use their free wifi. For the early-riser, cafés have an entirely different attraction - breakfast. There are plenty of traditional workman’s cafes to choose from for a hearty breakfast, visit Ventnor’s Esplanade for a good selection of venues overlooking the English Channel. Ryde and Cowes have a decent variety of cafés and bars where you can lounge on a comfy sofa and read the papers with a decent cuppa.

Local Producers Nobody can have missed the headlines about the importance of knowing where our food and drink comes from. Luckily, on the Isle of Wight it isn’t very hard to find out. You’re never far from a producer or supplier offering some good quality produce that not only tastes good, but supports the farms, fishing boats and other services that keep our Island busy and beautiful. Often the shops are right there on the farms where the food is produced. Of course, if you don’t have time to get out to the farms then if you’re in the town, they will come to you. Weekly Farmers’ Markets are held in Newport and Ryde, and in Cowes there are regular Food Shows throughout the year. Better still, you don’t need to cook this local provender yourself - often as not there is a farm café where you can try it. The most famous on the Island is Newchurch’s Garlic Farm - this little farm brings visitors from across the world to try the celebrated garlic recipes in its café. If you drop in, look out for garlic beer and even garlic pork scratchings! It isn’t just farms where you can find good Island food on offer - visitors to Ventnor can’t miss the busy haven where fishing boats come and go - and where better to try some local fish than at Ventnor Haven Fishery, as the fish is cooked and sold right there where it is landed.

Come and visit our farm shop for the best in local dairy products - milk, yoghurt, cheese, cream and butter. Plus a wide range of local veg, meat, eggs, bread, chutney, jam, beer, cider and lots more! Enjoy a drink and bite to eat in our farm café ‘Bluebells’. Try the deliciously creamy unpasteurised milk from our award winning pedigree Guernsey herd you’ll certainly enjoy the difference! Find us at: Briddlesford Lodge Farm, Briddlesford Road, Wootton, Isle of Wight PO33 4RY. Farm Shop is open Mon-Sat 10am-6pm , Sunday and bank holidays 10am-5pm Tel: 01983 884650. Chris Griffin

In Wootton lies Briddlesford Lodge Farm, a dairy with an award-winning herd of Guernsey cattle, which has been farmed by the same family since 1923. The cows are all descended from the fifteen cows that Charles Griffin brought across the downs to Briddlesford in 1923. Chris Griffin runs the farm’s Bluebells Café, an airy space with a view into half a dozen pens containing the most adorable calves. The herd’s milk is used to create the four ‘Buttercup’ milks - including unpasteurised, double cream and clotted cream. Guernsey milk is used to make award-winning Isle of Wight cheese, and if there is any surplus cream it is churned to make Briddlesford Guernseys Butter.

Chris is also qualified to lead educational visits and children particularly get pleasure from getting close to the farm’s animals and seeing where milk comes from. Read more at www.isleofwight.co.uk/taste

Pubs & Bars There’s nothing better to follow up a bracing walk through some of the Island’s countryside than stopping off at a rural pub. Enjoy the rural setting of the Chequers Inn near Rookley, or the Sun at Calbourne with novel model railways and an abundance of country walks. For delicious and locally sourced food in a traditional setting, head to the Taverners at Godshill, renowned for their seasonal menu. For family dining there are pubs with play areas, children’s menus and often a carvery on Sundays. The White Horse at Whitwell is a favourite, along with the Bugle in Brading with its big indoor ball pit. If you fancy the lively buzz of a town pub with hearty pub grub, a visit to Newport’s Bargeman’s Rest is a must. The venue has live music most nights, food served all day and real ales on draught. Newport town centre has some extremely old hostelries - the ancient Castle Inn is rumoured to be haunted. Naturally, the Island is not short of coastal pubs. There are beachside venues; the Steamer Inn and Waterfront Inn both take advantage of Shanklin’s superior coastline, while the Ocean Deck boasts fresh fish on the esplanade at Sandown. On the south coast, The Buddle Inn and Spyglass Inn each have a spacious terrace and lively ambiance.

The Highdown Inn Local seafood restaurant • Country family pub Bed and breakfast A beautiful example of a traditional country pub set in outstanding surroundings. Select your meal from the daily specials board, and enjoy an excellent meal either in the bar or restaurant. We’re noted for our seafood and shellfish. Complement your meal with a wine from our extensive stocks, or a cold beer or real ale. Highdown Lane, Totland PO39 0HY 01983 752450 www.highdowninn.com

Steve & Adam Doe

food hero

Steve Doe is a butcher through and through. These days he’s the managing director of one of the Island’s larger meat suppliers, yet there’s no doubt that he fondly remembers the time when he worked behind the counter of his butcher’s shop in Sandown. The success of that business allowed him to start a traditional wholesale butchery, Island Foods, based in Ryde. With over eighty percent of the meat Islandsourced, Steve, along with his team of skilled butchers - including son Adam - now provides prime local meat to a wide range of hotels and restaurants across the Island. If you have eaten Kemphill beef or Dunsbury lamb, the chances are it will have been prepared and delivered to the kitchen by Island Foods. Visit www.isleofwight.co.uk/taste to discover Steve’s special orders and masterclasses.

Dog Friendly Pubs If you’re travelling around the Isle of Wight with man’s best friend and looking for somewhere to eat, the Island caters excellently and there are a number of pubs, which will welcome your dog with open arms. The Highdown Inn, nestled in a sheltered spot at the foot of Tennyson Down in the west Wight is perhaps the most dog friendly pub on the Island. So much so, they even have a dog biscuits jar permanently on the bar. A meander through Brighstone Forest or a wander to the Longstone and you might like to try the Three Bishops in the pretty village of Brighstone with its extensive garden and outdoor seating. Not too far away, if you happen to be visiting the pretty village of Yarmouth, the Bugle Coaching Inn in the main square will welcome you and your pet into the warm atmosphere where you can enjoy some great quality food. On the other side of the Island at the coastal village of Bembridge, you’ll find the Crab & Lobster perched by the water’s edge with its extensive menu that welcome dogs and owners alike. Sister pubs, the Spyglass Inn on Ventnor Esplanade and Bargeman’s Rest on Newport Quay both stick by the same motto - ‘Well behaved dogs and muddy boots welcome!’ Both pubs have an extensive menu of traditional pub grub, a great selection of real ales and regular live music.
