Welcome to Taste of the Wight The Isle of Wight is undoubtedly an attractive place to live and to visit, but I’m delighted to say that our landscape and coastline is as bountiful as it is beautiful. The quality and provenance of the food and drink we enjoy is increasingly important to the way in which we live our lives and to our overall experience of visiting a destination. The Royal Isle of Wight Agricultural Society is proud to champion our Island’s farmers, growers, fishermen and producers and to raise awareness of the benefits of enjoying locally produced food and drink. Initiatives such as Bicycle Island seem a great way to combine some healthy exercise with guilt-free indulgence on the new ‘Taste Round the Island Route’. Whether you are eating out at one of our traditional village pubs, enjoying a beachfront café, buying provisions from a farmers’ market or sampling some fine dining, I hope you thoroughly enjoy your visit to the Isle of Wight.

Supporting Island agriculture We all love to enjoy great food and drink, they are such an important part of enjoying a visit to the Isle of Wight. Taste of the Wight is dedicated to finding you quality places to eat and drink as well as promoting the very best of our local produce, another essential element for an enjoyable holiday or short break. The Royal Isle of Wight Agricultural Society supports and raises awareness of agriculture and the natural environment on the Isle of Wight, which includes the food and drink, and this is why it has introduced the Wight Marque. Wight Marque The Society is passionate about the conservation of the Isle of Wight’s natural environment and its main aim is to raise awareness and promote the understanding of rural issues. Using local producers is a very good way to support the rural economy, which is why the Society has introduced the Wight Marque, a new local sign of origin for the Isle of Wight. Where you see this sign you can be confident that the produce has been reared, fished, cultivated or processed here on the Island. The scheme was launched at the Royal Isle of Wight County Show and already has a good number of audited and approved members. You can learn more about the Wight Marque on page 90 or online at wightmarque.co.uk.

The scheme offers support to people under the age of 25, aiming to add value to the Isle of Wight’s farming and land-based industries by offering financial support and help with relevant qualifications. Taste of the Wight Taste of the Wight will help you to enjoy the very best food and drink that the Isle of Wight has to offer all year round. The guide is also online and you can you find out more about our local produce and seasonal specialities as well as the most up-to-date directory of places to enjoy eating out on the Isle of Wight. Ray Redrup Ray Redrup, owner of Grace’s Bakery, is a true family man. Ray returned to the Island with his wife Carol and four children Daniel, David, Sarah and Jodie to start the small family business named after his late Grandmother in 1997. Since then Ray’s two younger brothers Derek and Mark have now joined the team. When the family acquired the Ryde building it was no more than an old flour mill. Trade soon took off and grew far quicker than they could have hoped for, with regular queues outside the door. With business booming, after 4 years it was time to open the second Grace’s shop in Newport, with Shanklin and Cowes quickly following suit. The most recent edition is the Yarmouth bakery, which opened its doors in 2013. Today the bakery employs over 50 members of staff from the Island. Ray has preserved the traditional baking methods he learnt as a 15 year old. Having worked his way through college, and gained a wealth of experiences in London, Europe and Africa, becoming a bakery specialist and master baker. Ray’s passion and quality is evident throughout his 5 Island bakeries. While the Island sleeps in the early hours, Grace’s team are baking their bread

There is no bleached flour, or additives with only English wheat and local produce used when available. As Grace’s goes from strength to strength Ray has become very proud seeing his two sons Daniel and David Redrup taking the business forward for many generations to come. Being an island, surrounded by the sea, you’d hope to find that seafood would be a local speciality. Thanks to fishermen like those at Ventnor Haven, this is indeed the case. Whilst seafood features on menus across the Island from pubs to beach cafés like The Beach Shack in Sandown, there are also a number of places where the local catch is definitely the main attraction. Depending on the time of the year, visitors to the Isle of Wight can feast on delicious crab and lobster together with a wide variety of fresh fish including cod, bass, plaice and Dover sole. You can even enjoy watching as the fishermen land their daily catch in Ventnor before it then appears on sale within minutes. You simply can’t get fresher than that. There are of course, also many ways to enjoy the seafood from a simple fresh crab sandwich to a delicious locally oak-smoked salmon. No trip to the Isle of Wight would be complete without traditional fish and chips. Seafood Corner in Newport takes locally caught fish from Ventnor Haven and you will be able to find many other quality fish and chip shops around the Island. See our listings on page 83.

Darren Beevers Sitting high above the fishing harbour in Ventnor, The Hambrough Restaurant with rooms offers fine dining and boutique accommodation by the sea. With its amazing sea views, the 35 cover Restaurant offers the perfect backdrop for Head Chef Darren Beevers’ modern, locally inspired dishes. Where possible, Darren uses a majority of Island produce, with the daily catch from only three minutes walk away, meat from six of the Island’s farms, vegetables grown to the restaurant’s own specifications, and the hen eggs come from a nearby farm. Darren, originally from Hampshire, works on a principle of three colours and three flavours in his dishes. In his opinion, any more will confuse the

food hero palette and muddle the dish. His vast Michelin experience has given him a great platform to create unique and visually attractive dishes, showcasing the best of the Isle of Wight produce. (See The Hambrough on page 2). Read the full story online at tasteofthewight.co.uk/heroes

Paul Massey

food hero

Paul Massey grew up in South East London, joining the army as a chef when he was only 15, quickly being promoted to lance corporal at the age of 20 years old running a team of 9 chefs. Hungry for more Paul had a great opportunity running the officers mess in Cyprus, where he started to hone his fine dining skills. On leaving the army Paul turned his hand to running pubs and restaurants. Deciding to put his expertise into his own business, Paul and partner Jenna, opened Fine Nammet on the Island in 2013. The name harks back to Island heritage, Nammet being the working mans lunch traditionally eaten at 3pm with a strong beer! The couple fell in the love with the potential the restaurant had to offer, being happy with the clean modern look with the open kitchen being the favourite

feature. Paul’s concept is to serve fresh, contemporary British food with limited food miles, preferring to use local produce wherever possible. Fine Nammet is quickly turning into a food destination having already been selected to put one of their dishes into the Great British Cook Book this September, representing the South East region in their first year. Conrad Gauntlett The ever-popular Rosemary Vineyard was planted in 1986 on land acquired by Conrad when he moved to the Isle of Wight. “The land is almost 60 feet above sea level, is free draining and mostly south facing so ideally placed to benefit from the Island’s mild climate,” said Conrad on choosing to establish his vineyard just outside of Ryde. Rosemary Vineyard has extended over the past 28 years and now produces an impressive selection of high quality wines, juices, liqueurs and ciders. There is also now a gift shop, touring park and the Vineleaf Coffee Shop on site. The Coffee Shop benefits from stunning views across the vineyard and serves an extensive menu of freshly prepared light lunches alongside mouthwatering homemade cakes.

Wight Marque Truly local food and drink The Wight Marque scheme was launched by the Royal Isle of Wight Agricultural Society at the Royal Isle of Wight County Show in June 2014 as a recognisable brand to identify produce that originates from, or has been processed here on the Isle of Wight. The Marque is the sign of truly local produce including quality fruit and vegetables, free-range meats, locally-caught seafood and baked goods using local produce. Buying a Wight Marque product confirms that you are purchasing authentic Isle of Wight fayre. This in turn means that you are helping to support the Island’s economy and sustain the traditional ways of this unique and beautiful Island. The Wight Marque has been supported by Red Funnel and Taste of the Wight. Plans for the future Whilst the Wight Marque has only recently been introduced, there has been a quick take up with a healthy number of businesses that have already been audited (see page 89) as well as a long list waiting to be approved. The next phase will also be including places to eat and drink. This means that in future you will be able to easily choose establishments that have a genuine commitment to using local ingredients and produce. From pubs, cafes and farmers’ markets, to village shops and fine dining restaurants, the Wight Marque will help you to enjoy the authentic Taste of the Wight. See more about the Royal Isle of Wight Agricultural Society on pages 4 and 5. Find out more about the Wight Marque online at wightmarque.co.uk.
