Taste of the Wight An introduction by the Isle of Wight High Sheriff and renowned beekeeper Mary Case. Born at Compton Farm, Mary Case is one of the best known members of the Isle of Wight farming community, growing apples, keeping bees and farming both sheep and turkeys on a mixed arable farm in Limerstone. “As a local producer myself, I am delighted to see the rise in popularity of locally grown food. Whether you are a visitor to the Isle of Wight or one of our lucky residents, there is an abundance of delicious food grown right here on our beautiful Island. Local food is good food, and buying local where possible supports the farmers and producers who are so passionate about good quality food and maintaining the Island’s rural way of life. “In the summer months our local produce really comes into its own, with garlic, asparagus, strawberries, tomatoes, and new potatoes among the many fruit and veg in season giving way to apples, plums and gages as we head towards autumn. Other local delights include chicken, lamb, beef, pork, cheese, milk, beer, oats, flour and honey from our hard working bees. With a number of farm shops and even supermarkets now stocking a range of local produce it is easy to find your Taste of the Wight.”

Welcome... The Isle of Wight is such an exciting place to be at the moment. In fact it always has been. Once Queen Victoria turned the spotlight onto this unique corner of her Empire, the Island became fashionable with artists, poets and celebrities... as it still is. Visitors still appreciate the Isle of Wight’s beautiful beaches, secluded woodlands and pretty market towns. The Island is also world famous for sailing, geology and pop festivals. But do you want to know its bestkept secret? The food! As the rest of the world wakes up to the local food revolution, the Isle of Wight has long been leading the way. The record-breaking sunshine helps ripen sweet tomatoes, fresh asparagus and aromatic garlic.

Fine Dining Never has the appetite for high quality food been so high. Consumers are increasingly interested in the provenance of what they eat and its presentation - and above all they want their meals to be delicious. From the outside it’s not always easy to tell if a restaurant is going to deliver the goods, which is why various institutions have established awards for foods. It’s no small achievement to win an award and the Isle of Wight is proud of its fair share of accolades. The highly praised Royal Hotel resides in the coastal town of Ventnor. The Royal has been listed in every Michelin Guide since it was first published in 1911 and has held two AA rosettes for over fifteen years. The two-rosette Lakeside Park Hotel in Wootton is a much more modern establishment where you can expect up-to-theminute cooking techniques. In the east Wight, the historic Priory Bay Hotel, with its estate of gardens, woodlands and even its own beach, has an AA rosette for its fine dining menu based around local seafood and game. The nearby Seaview Hotel is well known for its local produce; it even has its own farm. In St Helens is Dan’s Kitchen, this smart neighbourhood eatery boasts fine dining without the fuss and and also caters well for vegetarians.
Overlooking the lake, The Lakeside Park Hotel Bar and Brasserie benefits from an open environment with contemporary decor providing a unique space in which to enjoy a relaxed dining experience for around 100 guests. Open to non-residents. Advanced bookings are advised. Our popular daily specials menu is available for both lunch and dinner. OPEN DAILY Lunch 12 - 2.30pm. Dinner 6.30 - 9.30pm Ample parking available.

Alan Staley
food hero
Alan Staley is widely regarded as one of the most experienced chefs on the Island. His exceptional culinary skills allow ingredients to shine without fuss or pretension. Originally, he trained at the Isle of Wight College before beginning his career as a junior chef at the Savoy Hotel under Anton Edelmann. Alan went on to work at Chewton Glen and even did a stint on board the QE2 before returning to the Isle of Wight. “It was a great start to my career. Chef Edelmann taught me about standards, discipline and the importance of consistency as well as being an inspirational chef.” The classical French training he received at the Savoy remains a driving force with Alan and today he is recognised for his modern British food with a strong French influence. Following a seventeen year appointment at the Royal Hotel in Ventnor, where he maintained two AA Rosettes for excellent food over the last 15 years, Alan has recently taken up the position of head chef at the Seaview Hotel and Restaurant, championing local produce and bringing his love of ‘fine dining without the fuss’ to their AA Rosette rated kitchen. In his spare time, Alan loves to enjoy the Island with his family, cycle and supports Spurs. View the full article online at www.isleofwight.co.uk/taste Follow us @seaviewhotel

Oliver Stephens & James Trevaskis
The Priory Bay Hotel is a haven for showbiz personalities and minor royalty who are seeking to get away from it all. Up to now the hotel has not created any celebrities of its own - but this may be about to change. An Island boy who started his catering career at the Priory, head chef Oliver Stephens has returned triumphantly to his alma mater after a stint at Copenhagen’s Noma, often called ‘the world’s best restaurant’. All eyes are on the young chef and his talented sommelier James as they set out on their first full year in charge of the Priory kitchen, with even the influential Eater.com naming Oliver as one of its ‘Chefs to Watch in 2013’. To read more about Oliver’s passion for foraging and local produce view the full article online at www.isleofwight.co.uk/taste

At the Priory Bay Hotel we are passionate about high quality local ingredients whether foraged, farmed or fished. Based on a 50 acre seaside estate we offer a selection of menus and restaurants to titillate every palate. We want you to relax and enjoy the best the Island has to offer. Oliver and James (chef and sommelier) combine local ingredients with a selection of bio dynamic wines made by new producers. Newly redecorated the Priory Oyster offers casual brassiere style dining with a spectacular terrace with views over the grounds and sea; in fine weather the chef selects the catch of the day and locally caught lobster to barbeque on the terrace. For a really special treat try Oliver Stephens’s tasting menu, from 7 courses of sheer inspiration served in the gilded Regency Island room – booking essential. A visit to our award-winning restaurant will be the talking point of your stay on the Isle of Wight. ‘The owner takes food seriously; 98 per cent of guests eat in every evening. Our Sunday lunch went well beyond the usual roast (excellent), with choices such as pan-fried sea bass with fennel risotto and asparagus. In summer you can eat out on the terrace, where afternoon tea is another attraction.’ The Telegraph The Royal has achieved 2 AA Rosettes for excellent food over 16 consecutive years. Throughout the last 16 years, The Royal has been responsible for training some of the best chefs on the Island. Why not visit the Royal for afternoon tea, or lunch in the conservatory or terrace? Restaurants
Lugleys of Newport
Whether it’s a romantic dinner for two, a special occasion or the traditional family Sunday lunch - we all enjoy a good restaurant meal and the Isle of Wight offers a wealth of good quality venues. Pubs, hotels and restaurants used to be very different classes of establishment, but these days it’s sometimes hard to know which is which. Take Lugleys of Newport; once primarily a hotel, this popular venue still has five-star accommodation for guests, but is perhaps better known as a location for an intimate meal. The Leconfield in Ventnor welcomes non-residents to dine on AA rosette standard cuisine and unwind in comfort while enjoying a spectacular sea view. For a truly waterside dining experience The Hut at Colwell Bay and The Waterfront at Totland Bay both reside by the water’s edge. All year round there are restaurants serving up quality food. Most high streets have a number of such places - and in some towns they will be spoilt for choice. Cowes has a range of different dining styles, and especially in the summer there are often temporary or pop-up restaurants. For something more refined, look out for the sea facing New Holmwood; or enjoy a good meal overlooking the busy waterway from the huge picture windows of Lugleys of Cowes.

The Local Food Revolution Dining out, like so many popular pastimes, is subject to trends and fashions that come and go. One change that our time-travelling 20th century gourmand would be unable to avoid is the inexorable rise of local food. On offer today in any dining room with even the most casual pretension of quality one can find meals described in loving detail, with the area of origin of each ingredient, sometimes the name of the farm or the actual name of the producer. The distance travelled by the components of a dish to reach your plate is carefully considered, with attention meticulously drawn to any ingredients harvested from within a stone’s throw or, as in the case of Seaview’s Priory Bay Hotel, foraged from the hotel’s private beach. Local food is good food, and local food supports the farmers, growers and producers who make their livings from it and helps maintain the landscape and character of the region. Diners on the Isle of Wight today can enjoy a range of Island-produced food and drink that is better than it has been for many years. And as larger national chains falter, concerns about processed factory-produced foods mount, and people reject homogenisation and unprovenanced food, the remarkable rise of the best Isle of Wight food will continue.
Situated on the waters edge in Cowes the New Holmwood Hotel & Restaurant enjoys spectacular sea views and offers its clientèle the highest level of service, quality & comfort. With the enchanting town of Cowes being only a 15 minute walk along the waterfront it is the perfect base for exploring the beautiful Isle of Wight. The Spinnaker restaurant offers a great choice of freshly cooked cuisine, using locally sourced Isle of Wight produce where possible, to be enjoyed with the panoramic views of the Solent and all the ships that sail it. Caffe Isola has long been regarded as one of the Island’s finest coffee stops with latte art being common place. Run by Dan Burgess and his Sicilian wife Viviana, the café was originally set up as a flagship outlet for the family’s wholesale business, The I.O.W Espresso Co. “Being married to an Italian, coffee is a way of life!” says Dan, whose knowledge and passion for coffee is very apparent. “When we started out in event coffee fifteen years ago there was no support available.” They set out to change that by becoming distributors for quality Italian espresso machines and coffee. As their knowledge grew, so did the level of training, until now where they offer full latte art support. Interested in learning even more, Dan started researching coffee origins and how it was roasted which led to their first shop roaster entering production in 2011. Dan has been roasting their ‘Island Roasted’ artisan coffees at Caffe Isola ever since, and they are just about to take delivery of a bigger commercial roaster for their wholesale side of the business, allowing the development of bespoke blends. Local Produce Recent headlines have brought home to many the importance of knowing where our food and drink comes from. Luckily, on the Isle of Wight it isn’t very hard to find out. You’re never far from a producer or supplier offering some good quality produce that not only tastes good, but supports the farms, fishing boats and other services that keep our Island busy and beautiful. Often the shops are right there on the farms where the food is produced, and if you don’t have time to get out to the farms then they will come to you. Weekly Farmers’ Markets are held in Newport and Ryde, and in Cowes there are regular Food Shows throughout the year. There are a variety of venues with local provender on the menu. The most famous on the Island is Newchurch’s Garlic Farm - which brings visitors from across the world to try the celebrated garlic recipes in its café and maybe buy a few cloves to take home. It isn’t just farms where you can find good Island food on offer, the Isle of Wight is famous for its seafood with over 60 miles of fishable coastline. Crab, lobster, prawns, bass, plaice, dover sole and skate are all available when in season. Visitors to Ventnor will not have missed the busy Ventnor Haven Fishery where boats come and go all day long. The Haven is a great destination to try local catch, which is cooked and sold right there where it is landed.
The freshest possible seafood caught and landed on the same day When you come to Ventnor Haven Fishery you can buy the fresh fish and shellfish as it comes in off the boats. We supply the local catch to Island hotels, pubs, restaurants and cafés. Ventnor is renowned for the quality of its crab and lobster, available live, cooked or prepared from the fishery 7 days a week. Shopping “Local” on the IW With miles of rolling countryside and coastline, it is no surprise that the Isle of Wight is a mecca for locally produced food. There are a wide range of cafés, pubs and restaurants which serve locally sourced food throughout the year, and eating out on the Island is highly recommended during your stay. The Garlic Farm, Newchurch As a self-catering visitor, however, the benefits of home cooked food in a relaxed environment can be enjoyed to the fullest with delightful produce from right on your doorstep. The following shops stock a range of seasonal, local produce throughout the year: • The Garlic Farm, Newchurch (p31) • Briddlesford Farm, Wootton (p35) • Mottistone Farm Shop, nr Brighstone (p37) • Sharon Orchard, Ryde (p38) • The Farmers’ Market, (p36) Newport (Friday mornings) Ryde (Saturday mornings)
Self Catering Our self catering establishments are very proud of the food available here on the Island and encourage visitors to sample our local produce wherever possible. Ask your host about the Taste of the Wight gift hamper. “At Chessell Pottery Barns we love Mottistone Farm Shop, it’s great for free range pork, tasty sausages and lovely farm eggs. We have markets in Freshwater and Yarmouth and countless pubs serving regular visitors and residents, the Chequers Inn, Rookley is a firm favourite with our guests. I also recommend Dunsbury lamb from Brook and stopping off at Calbourne Classics’ farm shop, Shalfleet, for honeycomb ice cream. We use their clotted cream with our scones and homemade strawberry jam, to eat in the café or take away to enjoy in your holiday retreat.” Louise Collins, Chessell Pottery Barns www.littlestables.co.uk “The other side of the Island offers a good range of cafés, pubs and restaurants, too. Fish and chips for lunch at the Old Fort, Seaview, is a good old reliable. And the Forum Café at Brading Roman Villa never disappoints. For a meal in your holiday kitchen, we suggest a trip to the farmers’ markets in Ryde and Newport.” David Ballard, www.rabbitsbothie.co.uk

Gioia Minghella
The Minghella family has been making the Isle of Wight’s finest ice cream since 1950 and Gioia Minghella is convinced that using milk and cream from the Island makes all the difference. “The milk here just tastes better,” says Gioia. “Perhaps it’s because the cows are so well looked after? We only add a small amount of unrefined sugar and all the milk is pasteurised on site. We ensure that our ingredients are of the finest quality.” Minghella ice cream is available across the Isle of Wight and it’s well worth looking out for their distinctive signage so you can taste the difference too. Calbourne Water Mill Set in 35 acres of stunning rural landscape, Calbourne Water Mill contains one of the oldest working water mills in the country, dating back to the Domesday Book. Here, flour is made using traditional methods, ground using only the power of the water. Some grains and oats used in the process are sourced locally on the Isle of Wight. Resident millers Neal and Alex produce between 30 and 40 tonnes of flour every year, supplying many Island shops and a range of mainland outlets as well as selling flour and bread direct to customers. The mill is also used to roll oats, creating delicious oats and muesli that provide a superb and healthy start to your day. A visit to the mill offers a fascinating insight into yesterday’s food production, as well as the chance to sample the delights of home baked bread and cakes.

Colin Boswell
Nestled in the Isle of Wight’s fertile Arreton Valley is the award winning Garlic Farm, the country’s biggest selling garlic producer. Born and raised on the farm, Colin Boswell is the man behind the garlic, inspired to produce a crop that rivals any found in the Mediterranean and to share his passion with the thousands of visitors who come to The Garlic Farm every year. The move to garlic production came in 1976. Drawing inspiration from ‘The Art of French Cooking’, Colin and his wife Jenny embarked on a garlic adventure which has seen them grow from humble beginnings Photo courtesy Heather Edwards to a thriving producer, growing a wider range of garlic than anywhere else in Europe and a successful business which involves all of their five children. Driven by increasing interest among locals and visitors in food provenance, The Garlic Farm has grown extensively over the past few years, now including a year round café, education and heritage centre and a bustling farm shop selling all things garlic related and a wide range of Island produce.

Spyglass Inn, Ventnor
Pubs & Bars There’s nothing better to follow up a bracing walk through some of the Island’s countryside than stopping off at a rural pub. Enjoy the rural setting of the Chequers Inn near Rookley, or the Sun at Calbourne with novel model railways and an abundance of country walks. For delicious and locally sourced food in a traditional setting, head to the Taverners at Godshill, renowned for their seasonal menu. For family dining there are pubs with play areas, children’s menus and often a carvery on Sundays. The White Horse at Whitwell is a favourite, along with the Bugle in Brading and its big indoor ball pit. If you fancy the lively buzz of a town pub with hearty pub grub, a visit to Newport’s Bargeman’s Rest is a must. The venue has live music most nights, food served all day and real ales on draught. Newport town centre has some extremely old hostelries - the ancient Castle Inn is rumoured to be haunted. Naturally, the Island is not short of coastal pubs. There are beachside venues; the Steamer Inn and Waterfront Inn both take advantage of Shanklin’s superior coastline, while the Ocean Deck boasts fresh fish on the esplanade at Sandown. On the south coast, The Buddle Inn and Spyglass Inn each have a spacious terrace and lively ambiance.

In 2013 the Spyglass Inn, Ventnor is celebrating its 25th anniversary and from day one, owners Neil and Steph Gibbs wanted to show their support for Island food producers. One that was literally on their doorstep was local fisherman Geoff Blake. “In the early days Geoff used to pass me up freshly caught crabs over the sea wall straight from his boat,” commented Neil, “and we’re still delighted to be one of his satisfied customers. “Visitors to The Spyglass can sit on our terrace watching the fishing boats in the bay and then enjoy the fruits of the sea on their plates.” For a gourmet seafood experience try The Admiral’s Platter, ‘a feast fit for Nelson himself’! Dairyman’s Daughter Pubs don’t get a more traditional setting than the Dairyman’s Daughter, at the heart of an ancient village, nestled in the lee of the downs at Arreton. The pub is named after Elizabeth Wallbridge, a local girl who was made famous by the book ‘Annals of the Poor’. She is now buried in the village churchyard alongside a 12th century church, village green and duck pond within Arreton Barns. Arreton Barns is one of the Island’s most popular visitor attractions and it’s easy to enjoy browsing the shops and watching local craftsmen at work after a hearty pub lunch. Beautifully decorated in original village memorabilia, the Dairyman’s Daughter has a lovely outdoor courtyard and sheltered seating area, ideal for the summer months. For the largely, but not exclusive, adult visitor with more discerning tastes in food and wine there is the Bugle Coaching Inn in Yarmouth, The Buddle Inn, Niton and The Village Inn at Bembridge; all a must for connoisseurs of quality dining at great value. The need for family friendly dining has not been overlooked. The White Lion in Niton, The Pig & Whistle in Shanklin and The Bugle Family Inn at Brading all offer a fun filled dining experience. From bouncy castles to ball pits, summer magic shows to Punch and Judy and all with floodlit gardens these family friendly Inns have it all. As an added bonus they offer ‘Kids Eat Free*’ all year round. The perfect choice for families. The demand for contemporary dining is well established and in the renowned group of Lugleys Restaurants situated in Newport and Cowes, dining is taken to another level. Stunning menus created by Dorchester Hotel chef Musa Jobi create the focal point for a memorable visit to these elegant restaurants.
