Keeping strong family ties has always been a cherished Filipino value. Behind the smiles and crazy antics of Vice Ganda is the heart of a son who had to endure nineteen long years away from his mother. Vice Ganda’s mom had to seek greener pastures in America in order to provide a better life for her children. Her sacrifice did not go to waste. “Masaya ako, masaya ang buong pamilya ko na nandito na sila after nineteen years,” shared Vice Ganda when his mother came home to a brand-new house, nonetheless. “Noon ko pa pinipilit yung nanay ko na umuwi na, noong maayos na ang trabaho ko, umuwi ka na, huwag ka nang magtrabaho kasi matanda na. Reunion talaga kaya nag-uumapaw yung kaligayahan ko ng araw na iyon.” During Vice Ganda’s 38th birthday, his elder sibling was able to send a heartwarming video all the way from New York, and his mother reminded him that “Nanay is only a phone call away.”

Graceful and regal, Bb. Pilipinas-Universe MJ Lastimosa actually grew up amidst the insurgencies in North Cotabato. Together with her sister, MJ grew up in the care of her uncle, Sergio Lastimosa. Her mother met her father in Manila, where their family first stayed. Her father was an Arab businessman who had a recruitment agency, and in the mid-‘90’s, both parents had to leave to attend to the business in Saudi Arabia. Although they are far apart, they don’t let it stop them from being a family. “I get to talk to my parents from time to time, even to my three younger siblings who live with them,” MJ shares. She remains close to her parents and takes to heart their teachings. “My dad taught me that it is still possible to love despite the distance. I may never have bonding moments with him but we know we love each other,” she states. “I learned from my mom how to dream.” And dream she did. After vying for the crown thrice, MJ successfully represented the country in the Miss Universe pageant, proudly making it in the Top 10.

Young as he is, The Voice Kids finalist Darren Espanto, already experiences the effects of long-distance relationships. Darren was born and raised by his parents, both nurses, in Calgary, Canada. In 2014, he tried his luck with The Voice of the Philippines – Kids. This move was the first of many for the young Darren. He won second, with Coach Sarah pronouncing him “the complete package”. After a quick visit back to Calgary to take a school test, he headed back to the Philippines with his dad. Come mid-2014, Darren made the life-altering decision to stay in the Philippines to pursue his showbiz career. A downside to this, perhaps, is his being apart from his family. He had to do without his parents being physically present with him. It was surely a challenge to be apart from his family and mentors. After all, his dad was his first voice coach; his mom, his first choreographer. Yet, as they have always been, Darren’s parents continue to be supportive of his dreams even miles away. The actress is now based in Los Angeles and happily married for 13 years to FilipinoAmerican businessman Ralph Moore Jr., Hilda took a break from show business for seven years and did one movie recently, the Star Cinema film The Mistress, which was directed by Olivia Lamasan and starred John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo and Ronaldo Valdez. She mentioned in an interview that “I am now just a regular housewife and semi-retired.”

CHANDA ROMERO played the conflicted Anne in Working Girls. Anne may not be as financially troubled as the other girls but her marriage is falling apart, as her husband is insecure about her success. One of the respected actresses in the industry who has been in the business for the past 42 years, Chanda is currently part of the GMA show Pari Koy which stars Dingdong Dantes.

Today, Carmi is still very much active in showbusiness and was recently seen in a Maalaala Mo Kaya episode. In the 1984 movie Working Girls by Ishmael Bernal, he has made characters that paint women as family oriented yet they are also hard workers and forces to reckon with. In an article about Gina, she mentioned about her childhood ambition of wanting to be an actress, when her mother was a ticket taker at the Mayfair Theater, Avenida, Manila. “We didn’t have a TV then. I really just wanted to act. It was in my blood. When I was home and Mommy was at work, I was free to act as much as I wanted on the street corners.” Gina has remained active in showbusiness and has had outstanding roles in ABS-CBN teleseryes such as Coco Martin’s grandmother in the series Juan Dela Cruz. She is currently part of the GMA drama Let The Love Begin.

Rio was last seen on ABS-CBN as Angel Locsin’s mother in The Legal Wife and Coco Martin’s foster mother in the series Ikaw Lamang. The actress is married to former basketball player, Padim Israel. She had 3 daughters, Paula & Jabba (daughters from previous marriage to Al Tantay), and youngest daughter Joses. She is reportedly cast in the upcoming remake of Pangako Sa’Yo which will star popular love team Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla.

EXCLUSIVE JADINE REVEALS LOVE TEAM’S ‘SECRET’

During the press conference of their upcoming movie Para Sa Hopeless Romantic, James Reid and Nadine Lustre maintained that they are not a couple and are not planning to be one anytime soon. “For me she’s the closest girlfriend that I have. Girl-friend,” he stressed. “Like what she said she always gives me love advice and she listens to me. But yeah she’s a really good friend.” James pointed out that nothing has changed since their last press conference. “We’ve said it before na friends lang talaga kami and we’re both really focused on our careers and on our work and we’re happy just being friends,” he said. Nadine agreed with James. However, she recognizes the fact “we’re just really friends but then there’s chemistry and we don’t know we’re its coming from.” She even added, “Like whenever people ask us kung bakit nagwo-work ang Jadine and where the chemistry is coming from we keep saying na hindi naming alam kung saan. I don’t know maybe it just works.” Both James and Nadine affirm the fact that their off-cam closeness is working to their love team’s benefit. “May mga bagay na gusto ko kay Nadine and I use that when I act especially when you have to act in love, you have to find something that you love about the person. So it does help that we’re close. It helps that we’re friends,” James explained.

Pinaninindigan din ng dalawa na hanggang friends lang talaga sila at ‘yon lang ang kaya nilang i-offer sa kanilang supporters. “Kami po kasi ni James, meron po kaming…yung parang takip sa mata ng kabayo, ang nakikita lang namin is yung goal namin. Alam po namin ni James yung pakiramdam na nandito ka na tapos biglang babagsak. Ayaw po namin na ma-miss out ‘yon, ayaw namin na magkaroon kami ng mistakes na puwedeng maging dahilan para mawala itong meron kami ngayon,” paliwanag ni Nadine. Sa palagay ba niya ay sagabal ang pagkakaroon nila ni James ng relasyon if ever? “Di naman po siya sagabal. It’s just that mahirap kasi kung maging kami po tapos magkaroon ng problema. Yung tipong meron po kaming work, may eksena po kami na kailangang sweet. As a love team, siyempre, kailangan kaming sweet para magpakilig, eh, magkaaway po kami… ‘yung mga ganu’ng factor. So parang ang hirap din. Ayaw po naming mawala talaga yung friendship namin,” she explained. Ganito rin ang naging paliwanag ni James. “Sinabi ko po before na as long as we’re working together, ayokong magkaroon kami ng relasyon or something kasi it will be just complicate things. Kasi I’ve seen it and it happened before na rin to me. “Dati, nagkaroon ako ng girlfriend pero nasira yung career ko. Mas focus ako noon sa girlfriend ko kesa sa career ko. Like I tell him everything. Kapag magkasama kami magkadikit lang. Sa kanya ko nakikita na siya ‘yung nag-co-comfort sa akin in everything. Kahit na malungkot ako or may problema ako sa bahay na hindi naman related, parang whenever he’s there I feel na-se-secure ako. Para siyang security blanket. Like that.” Is there any pressure on their part to really be a couple one day? “I think we’re used to it. I think at the start there was pressure on how to act. Not in the movies but how to act in real life but I think now we’re used to it and we’re comfortable already with the fact that we’re really just friends,” James replied. The actress meanwhile explained that the fact that they’re not together is probably one of the reasons why their love team is one of the most popular these days “Mas nakakakilig po kasi kapag may pinu-push sila alam mo ‘yun? Nadine Lustre admitted that she could somehow relate to her character in her upcoming movie Para Sa Hopeless Romantic. Nadine plays Rebecca. The actress relayed that there was a point in her life when she had difficulty moving on from her past love like her character in the film. “’Yung character ko kasi dito hindi maka-move on tapos pagnakikita sila ni Nikko (James Reid), hopeless romantic siya eh…” She added, “Parang nasasaktan siya, hindi siya maka move on. Actually yes [nakaka-relate ako] don din pero eventually naka-move on na ako kasi na-experience ko din ‘yung ganon na pagnakikita ko siya parang I don’t know, parang nag-iiba ‘yung mood ko, before naman, pero hindi na ngayon, iba na ngayon before po ganon,” she said during the blogger’s conference of the movie. According to Nadine, the movie will have its dramatic scenes but it would not be that heavy. “Hindi naman siya na super seryoso, meron lang talaga na mga scenes na medyo madrama, hindi naman siya heavy drama, ‘yung mga kilig po kasi na mga eksena dito mas more on kay Julia (Barretto) at Inigo (Pascual) na nangyayari. The kilig part meron din naman kami ni James kasi parang flashback ‘yung sa amin, ‘yung present talaga, hindi na kami break na kami, sa college na, ganyan.” Nadine has already worked with James Reid on two successful films, Diary ng Panget and Talk Back and You’re Dead. With their growing closeness, the actress shared some of the things she admires the most about the actor. “Ako naman for me well pagkasama ko kasi si James, laging masaya lalo na pag ‘yun nga madaling araw na medyo baliw na siya, nagjo-joke na siya, ganon siya,” he relayed. She added that James cheers her up whenever she is down. ”Tapos he has great timing like when I have problems parang nagpapatawa siya. I don’t think he knows naman ‘pag down ako, wala lang, parang on time lang siya palagi.”

Janice played Maja’s mother in the teleserye Ina Kapatid Anak and Gerald’s mom in the soap Budoy. “Nanay ko naman ‘yun. Kung meron man akong dapat sagutin, iyon ‘yun. Let’s respect her. I love her so much,” she said. Jericho “Echo” Vibar Rosales was discovered on the television program Eat Bulaga! via its segment Mr. Pogi in 1996. His story was an ever inspiring rags to riches one. Jericho has made no secret of his roots as a fish vendor. He is, in fact, proud of it. As a child, he used to help his mother, who was a fish vendor, sell at a public market. As he grew older, he did more odd jobs, from being a service crew at a pizza fast food chain to a driver. He is now a renowned actor and singer plus an endorser for various brands. He is one of the lead stars of ABS-CBN’s teleserye Bridges of Love and is happily married to model Kim Jones.

He also rummaged through restaurant garbage bins for leftover food, which his mother would cook for dinner. Isko is now Vice Mayor of Manila and is being considered by the Liberal Party to run for Senator in 2016.

ctress Teresa Loyzaga shared on Rated K, how she raised Diego and his brother singlehandedly in Australia. Diego was only 5 when Teresa took him to live abroad. “Not that walang magandang kinabukasan dito (Pilipinas), meron. Pero it was a choice because I was also thinking of myself, and of course them, my children. As you well know, I’m a single mom,” she explained. For 11 years, Teresa raised her children solo. She revealed taking on many jobs so she can give her sons a good life. “The government gave me assistance, they helped me bring up my children, put them to school. I depended on that and siyempre maghahanap ka ngayon ng trabaho. I worked for a hair replacement company, I worked for an insurance company, I worked in a call center, I worked in a bank until I finally landed the job I still have now, which is in an airline in Australia.” In 2011, Diego was able to convince his mom to return to the Philippines. “Diego din started asking me, well about his father. Of course, I will not say no to my son, who wants to get to know his father,” she said. This led to Diego discovering his father actor Cesar Montano, his roots and eventually trying

his luck in showbiz. “Me not knowing the whole time I was growing up in Australia kung sino yung dad ko, yung mommy ko here (sa Pilipinas) and when I finally saw it (showbiz) I said hey this is really cool,” he shared. After landing his first role on Mara Clara, Diego is thankful to get a new break in primetime serye Forevermore. “Sobrang tuwang-tuwa po ako na they gave me a second chance, tapos yun nga it’s one of the highest rating teleseryes right now.” If not for his mom, Diego wouldn’t be where he is right now. “We really saw that in mom. She was really pulling the weight of both dad and mom.”

ith his movie Para Sa Hopeless Romantic coming out in theaters starting May 13, Inigo Pascual and onscreen love team partner Julia Barretto have been busy promoting the movie all over the country these past few weeks. Inigo shared that Julia has been a big help to him not just when it comes to acting. “Mostly si Julia talaga yung nagtuturo sa akin. More than me teaching her anything siya yung nagtuturo sa akin how to feel and how to be confident pag sa promos and all that. Because I'm usually shy when I talk but now I'm more confident when I speak. Parang hindi ako takot magsalita,” he shared. With their “JulNigo” following, Inigo said there is a key thing in becoming an effective love team in showbiz. “Trust is the most important thing in a love team kasi you guys are going to be together for a long time and kailangan yung trust talaga nandun. Even during a scene yung alam mong what if someone can’t do it, you know someone is there to help you out, yung pati sa mga problema, sa personal stuff kasi kayo ang magkakasama everyday. Yung kailangan mo ng someone you can trust and talk to everyday with everything,” he admitted. However, it turns out she can also slay lengthy and tongue-twisting rap segments especially that of Nicki Minaj’s part on “Bang Bang” and her guest Gloc-9’s nationalistic hit “Upuan.” In an interview after the show, KZ shared that she was supposed to have a full-on solo rap performance, but it was unfortunately cut from the lineup.

3. Music looping Another risk that KZ took during the show was when she did an impeccable live music looping, which she did with her acoustic guitarist McCoy. Looping, in simple terms, is the process of recording repeated sections of a sound material to create patterns. It’s usually done with the use of various music technologies like synthesizers and computerized music software, among others. In KZ’s concert, she used her own mouth to create specific sounds to match with the acoustic guitar while performing Ray Charles’ 1950s song “Hit The Road Jack.” It’s too amazing, we’re hoping one day KZ would show it on TV for all the Kapamilyas to see.

4. Acoustic jam sessions It’s always entertaining to see a game audience-member jam with the performer once handed the mic in every concert. In KZ’s case though, she just didn’t settle for one person to sing with her but rather tapped a bunch of showbiz personalities from the audience to perform “Waiting in Vain” with. Among them were Eugene Domingo, Alexander Diaz, Arron Villaflor, Erik Santos and albeit reluctantly even, Enchong Dee. Her acoustic version of the Visayan love song “Balay ni Mayang” by Martina San Diego and Kyle Wong is also worth singling out, especially how cutely she attempted to translate it line-per-line for the benefit of the audience who couldn’t speak the dialect. 5. KZ-fying of songs Even though she excellently covered a good number of international hits like Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep,” Lorde’s “Royals,” Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space,” Peggy Lee’s “Fever” with guest Richard Poon, and Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love” together with her X Factor mentor Charice, among others, KZ did best when she added her own flavor to local hits. Among the ones she “KZ-fied” were Teen King Daniel Padilla’s “Nasa’yo Na Ang Lahat,” Erik Santos’ “Muling Tanggapin,” Carol Banawa’s “Stay” and her guest Ebe Dancel’s “Wag Ka Nang Umiyak” which sent the most chills down our spine. In a teaser that aired on Wednesday, it was revealed that the Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano starrer would join the ranks of other Kapamilya shows that would be aired abroad. Although the soap is slated to end this May 22, its international airing in Cambodia, Vietnam and even part of Africa will start soon. The said countries are believed to be territories where ABS-CBN programs have a particularly strong viewership. Forevermore, which started airing October last year, tells the unfolding of romance between hotelier Xander (Gil) and farm girl Agnes (Soberano). In a recent ABS-CBN News report, it was noted that the International Distribution Division has sold more than 30,000 hours of content to over 50 territories worldwide to date. Among the Kapamilya soaps that made it abroad is the original Pangako Sa’Yo starring Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa. The more recent program to have a following outside the country is Be careful With My Heart, which starred Jodi Sta. Maria and Richard Yap.

JOY VIADO UNDERGOES LEG SURGERY FOR THE THIRD TIME, SEEKS FINANCIAL AID Comedienne Joy Viado undergoes leg surgery for the third time. According to a report on news site InterAksyon, the Luv U star already underwent two debridement surgeries for her lower right leg and is now confined since May 1 at the Chinese General Hospital. Meanwhile, according to a Facebook post by Joy’s friend, Annette Lucido, the comedienne also needs to undergo 20

therapy sessions worth P6,200.00 each. Considering Joy’s incurring expenses, her friends decided to hold a fundraising event entitled, “Jam for Joy” on May 31 at the 19 East Bar & Grill in Sucat, Muntinlupa.
