On the 70th Annual Tony Awards in New York, A Filipino costume and set designer Clint Romas won the Best Costume Design in a Play for his work on "Eclipsed." In his acceptance speech the Tony recipient honoured the Liberian women depicted in Danai Gurira's play set in the second Liberian Civil War. Clint Ramos also hailed by Vogue for dressing the 5 Liberian female protagonists at a rebel base camp during war-torn Liberia. The magazine peacekeepers evoked their "fierce desire to hold onto a sense of femininity in the face of a total dissolution of identity." Ramos also added of how he selected costumes to depict the women of the Peace Initiative Movement who fought and won the war by telling the men to stop the fighting and change the nation's direction. The University of the Philippines’ and Dulaang UP alumnus created costumes for the women of the peace rallies who wore T-shirts with printed words of peace. The multi-awarded designer won over nominees Tom Scutt for King Charles III, Jane Greenwood for Long Days Journey Into Night, and Michael Krass for Noises Off.

PINOYS ARE OK DESPITE "BREXIT" SITUATION

Asif Ahmad British Ambassador for the Philippines said that Britain's exit from the European Union will have no major impact on the situation of 250,000 Filipinos living and working in the country. According to Ahmad, neither would Britain’s exit have an impact on its immigration laws, especially for Filipinos who

want to migrate there adding to it “We have special categories of our immigration rules that allow essential workers to come in. It’s not that we are suddenly shutting the gates to people moving. We make our own decisions as to who comes and goes.” Britain and the European Union have serious disagreements on opening borders to refugees from Syria and other conflict stricken Middle East countries. “Migration of people within the EU and the UK is something that should be negotiated on how that takes place,” said Ahmad. “Our government has been at pains to reassure everybody living in the UK that there is no immediate change to their status.” The European Union’s core values include human rights, democracy and the rule of law, but Ahmad said migration should not be equated with human rights.

Ahmad also indicated that “It is wrong to put human rights and migration in the same pot.” “Migration is completely a different issue. Migration means every country has a right to retain control over its borders, determine whom it wants to have and in what quantities and terms under which people should come in or not,” he said. Ahmad said Asean could learn from the Brexit in terms of “avoiding the areas of difficulty. He said Asean members can create and open markets “where you could trade with each other and negotiate trade deals as a bloc.” “What you see in the UK is a desire of a member-state to have a strong voice in determining their economic wellbeing, sovereignty, defense and other ambitions that any country has.”

Continue on Page 7

“If I could go back in time, I would decide not to run for president. While campaigning, I saw the crowd. They become wild, not just with applause.

President Fidel Ramos, sir, salamat po sa tulong mo making me President; President Joseph Ejercito Estrada; Senate President Franklin Drilon and the members of the Senate; Speaker Feliciano Belmonte and the members of the House of Representatives; Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno and Associate Justices of the Supreme Court; His Excellency Guiseppe Pinto and the members of the Diplomatic Corps; incoming members of the Cabinet; fellow workers in government; my fellow countrymen. No leader, however strong, can succeed at anything of national importance or significance unless he has the support and cooperation of the people he is tasked to lead and sworn to serve. It is the people from whom democratic governments draw strength and this administration is no exception. That is why we have to listen to the murmurings of the people, feel their pulse, supply their needs and fortify their faith and trust in us whom they elected to public office. There are many amongst us who advance the assessment that the problems that bedevil our country today which need to be addressed with urgency, are corruption, both in the high and low echelons of government, criminality in the streets, and the rampant sale of illegal drugs in all strata of Philippine society and the breakdown of law and order. True, but not absolutely so. For I see these ills as mere symptoms of a virulent social disease that creeps and cuts into the moral fiber of Philippine society. I sense a problem deeper and more serious than any of those mentioned or all of them put together. But of course, it is not to say that we will ignore them because they have to be stopped by all means that the law allows. Erosion of faith and trust in government – that is the real problem that confronts us. Resulting therefrom, I see the erosion of the people’s trust in our country’s leaders; the erosion of faith in our judicial system; the erosion of confidence in the capacity of our public servants to make the people’s lives better, safer and healthier. Indeed ours is a problem that dampens the human spirit. But all is not lost. I know that there are those who do not approve of my methods of fighting criminality, the sale and use of illegal drugs and corruption. They say that my methods are unorthodox and verge on the illegal. In response let me say this: I have seen how corruption bled the government of funds, which were allocated for the use in uplifting the poor from the mire that they are in. I have seen how illegal drugs destroyed individuals and ruined family relationships. I have seen how criminality, by means all foul, snatched from the innocent and the unsuspecting, the years and years of accumulated savings. Years of toil and then, suddenly, they are back to where they started. Look at this from that perspective and tell me that I am wrong. In this fight, I ask Congress and the Commission on Human Rights and all others who are similarly situated to allow us a level of governance that is consistent to our mandate. The fight will be relentless and it will be sustained. As a lawyer and a former prosecutor, I know the limits of the power and authority of the president. I know what is legal and what is not. My adherence to due process and the rule of law is uncompromising. You mind your work and I will mind mine. “Malasakit;” “Tunay na Pagbabago; Tinud-anay (real) nga Kausaban(change)” – these are words which catapulted me to the presidency. These slogans were conceptualized not for the sole purpose of securing the votes of the electorate. “Tinud-anay nga kabag-uhan (real change). Mao kana ang tumong sa atong pang-gobyerno (this is the direction of our government).” Far from that. These were battle cries articulated by me in behalf of the people hungry for genuine and meaningful change. But the change, if it is to be permanent and significant, must start with us and in us. To borrow the language of F. Sionil Jose, we have become our own worst enemies. And we must have the courage and the will to change ourselves. Love of country, subordination of personal interests to the common good, concern and care for the helpless and the impoverished – these are among the lost and faded values that we seek to recover and revitalize as we commence our journey towards a better Philippines. The ride will be rough. But come and join me just the same. Together, shoulder to shoulder, let us take the first wobbly steps in this quest. There are two quotations from revered figures that shall serve as the foundation upon which this administration shall be built. “The test of government is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide for those who have little.” (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) And from (Abraham) Lincoln I draw this expression: “You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong; You cannot help the poor by discouraging the rich; You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer; You cannot further the brotherhood by inciting class hatred among men.” My economic and financial, political policies are contained in those quotations, though couched in general terms. Read between the lines. I need not go into specifics now. They shall be supplied to you in due time. However, there are certain policies and specifics of which cannot wait for tomorrow to be announced.

“I will reinstall the program of family planning. Tatlo tama na yan so social workers must be proactive. Better shape up. Wag na muna simbahan, away kami diyan e. Noon pa yan, it started during [President Fidel] Ramos’ time. He was the only president who fought for family planning.

“If you enable families to limit and phase their children to what they can afford and what they can provide for, then that’s going to have an effect on poverty and inequality,” ani new NEDA chief Pernia.

Therefore, I direct all department secretaries and the heads of agencies to reduce requirements and the processing time of all applications, from the submission to the release. I order all department secretaries and heads of agencies to remove redundant requirements and compliance with one department or agency, shall be accepted as sufficient for all. I order all department secretaries and heads of agencies to refrain from changing and bending the rules government contracts, transactions and projects already approved and awaiting implementation. Changing the rules when the game is on-going is wrong. I abhor secrecy and instead advocate transparency [applause] in all government contracts, projects and business transactions from submission of proposals to negotiation to perfection and finally, to consummation. Do them and we will work together. Do not do them, we will part sooner than later. On the international front and community of nations, let me reiterate that the Republic of the Philippines will honor treaties and international obligations. On the domestic front, my administration is committed to implement all signed peace agreements in step with constitutional and legal reforms. I am elated by the expression of unity among our Moro brothers and leaders, and the response of everyone else to my call for peace. I look forward to the participation of all other stakeholders, particularly our indigenous peoples, to ensure inclusivity in the peace process. Let me remind in the end of this talk, that I was elected to the presidency to serve the entire country. I was not elected to serve the interests of any one person or any group or any one class. I serve every one and not only one. That is why I have adapted as an article of faith, the following lines written by someone whose name I could no longer recall. He said: “I have no friends to serve, I have no enemies to harm.” P re s c i n d i n g t h e re f ro m , I n ow a s k eve r yo n e , a n d I m e a n everyone, to join me as we embark on this crusade for a better and brighter tomorrow. But before I end, let me express the nations, on behalf of the people, our condolences to the Republic of Turkey of what has happened in the place. We offer our deepest condolences. Why am I here? Hindi kasali ito diyan. The past tense was, I am here because I love my country and I love the people of the Philippines. I am here, why? Because I am ready to start my work for the nation. Thank you and good afternoon.

“There will be no corruption just like here. The first whip. Then I just have to whisper: ‘Please go,” paliwanag pa ni Digong. “My government is for the helpless, for the hopeless, and for the defenseless,” giit pa ni Duterte sa kanyang mensahe. “Impeachment? Go ahead walang problema sa akin. I will insist what I promised to the people,” hamon ni Duterte.

“We selected the team that best competes with the teams that we are going to play against,” wika ni Baldwin sa pagbabalik ng Nationals sa bansa noong Martes ng gabi mula sa isang threeweek training camp sa Europe. “Size was such a big factor in our selection. So it’s not a question of what Calvin didn’t do or what LA didn’t do. It’s more of what type of player they are today,” dagdag pa nito. “It’s not the best 12 players. It’s not the most valuable 12 players. It’s the players that we believe match what we need to do in this particular OQT, and size was a big factor. It was a huge factor,” sabi ni Baldwin. Sa Manila OQT, nakatakda sa Hulyo 5-10 sa Mall of Asia Arena sa Pasay City, ay kasama ng Gilas Pilipinas sa Group B ang France at New Zealand, habang nasa Group A naman ang Turkey, Canada at Senegal.

The memorial to President Quirino was unveiled in Tokyo’s Hibiya Park. Rosette Sabiniano, a University of the Philippines (UP) student has invented a device that reduces the amount of time used by small-scale farmers to plant corn plants. According to research the gear could plant corns 14 times faster than the normal planting method. It usually takes 107minutes to manually plant a corn in a 500-sqm area, but the UP scholar's invention reduces the time just to seven minutes. Rosette describe her device as a sustainable, inexpensive and easily assembled equiptment that signigicantly increases the productivityof local farmers. This mechincal corn planter is designed with galvanized iron tubes, metal sheet, metal plates, and two bearings that can be seperated in parts making it easily to just replace a part that malfunction instead of changing everything. Rossette explained that “The important parts of the design were the diameter of the seed containers, the position of the holes of the seed containers, the diameter of the wheels, and its anti-slippage structure and the structure of the furrower.” The device has three functions, which it simultaneously executes when being used: furrowing, seed dropping, and seed covering. The farmers just have to push down the controller or the handle up to the desired depth of cut in the soil and pull the equipment. In the traditional way of farming, these methods are undertaken separately, with the farmer sowing the soil first with a carabao or a tractor and then individually dropping seeds. Rossette also told media she invented the mechanical corn planter as part of her advocacy to improve the lives of farmers in the country. She shared how she grew up watching her grandfather plowing fields in Nueva Ecija, the biggest rice producing-province. Corn is the second largest crop produced in the Philippines. Rossette plans to work with the Department of Agriculture after graduation to pursue her advocacy of helping small scale farmers with her invention.

#HUGOTCAFE: DEN OF THE MILLENNIALS Tara Let's Eat by:Irene Tria "Don’t take your love away from me Don’t you leave my heart in misery If you go, then I’ll be blue ‘Cause breaking up is hard to do" Definitely this verse from a song in the late 70’s is relatable to everyone who underwent a serious break-up or simply just heartbroken. From selling churros, Overseas Worker from Singapore, Amfi Joaquin and husband then opted of why not create something that would capture everyone’s interest. While browsing her social media accounts, Amfi got intrigued with the trending #hugotlines, wondered if they have intentionally posted those lines to become viral or was really delivered from their heart, in short “may pinag-huhugutan”. That’s when the idea came up of why not put up a café instead of selling a fried-dough pastry based snack, but with a twist, a place where there are affordable good foods and can accommodate people from all walks of life. Because of the overwhelming reception of the netizens with #hugotlines, then came the birth of #HugotCafé . In less than a week, #HugotCafé already have 20 thousand followers on Facebook, and all of them actively send inquiries about their menu and some would just exchange #hugotlines with Amfi.

Who would’ve thought that in this time of digital age, millennials that grew up in an electronics-filled and increasingly online and socially-networked world would be interested in sharing their softer side? Yes, one of the highlights and reasons why millennial visit #HugotCafé is because of their open mic. Open mic is a live show where audience members may perform on stage; a live poetry reading. In just one month, the return of investment for #HugotCafé is almost 90%; because of that Amfi decided to come home and concentrate with #HugotCafé. "We brainstorm in February, and then construction in March, softopening in April and we’re already one month. We are so overwhelmed by the number of customers who visits us every day. Some would really wait for almost two hours just to try our #hugotmenu." – Amfi Here are their must try: #HugotCafé does not only focus on their live poetry and open mic nor the exchange of hugot lines among other customers, BUT they also make sure that their #hugotmenu is really good and satisfactory. #HugotCafé is open from 11 AM to 10 PM at the Second Floor, XRC Building, 3702 Hermosa Corner Limay Street, Tondo, Manila and soon will be opening their second branch at GN Building JP Laurel Highway, Kumintang Ibaba, Batangas City

a ilasing n Crispy N ied Shrimp ) Hipon (Fr d in Wine Marinate

This Crispy Nilasing na Hipon recipe is another variation of the popular shrimp pulutan dish. This version is crispier and tastier due to the use of cooking wine as the marinade. Nilasing na Hipon (sometimes called crispy fried drunken shrimp) is a popular dish in the Philippines. It makes use of whole medium sized shrimp with head and tail on. It is very important to get the shrimp ready before cooking –this means cleaning it thoroughly in running water, or you can also use a large bowl. If using a bowl, simply fill it with water and wash each of the shrimp well. Once done, let the water drip for a few minutes. I recommend the use of a colander or a wire mesh to make the job easy. Next comes the marinade. Arrange the shrimp in a clean bowl. Sprinkle the garlic salt and ground black pepper over it. Toss using a spoon or even your hands. Add the cooking wine. I use Shao Xing cooking wine for this recipe. You can also use other liquors such as gin, vodka, and brandy. This is the part when the shrimp is absorbing all those good flavors. The next part is the preparation of the coating or the ingredients that makes the shrimp crispy. I use flour, cornstarch, and ground cayenne pepper (to add spice). Dredge the marinated shrimp on the flour mixture and fry. That’s it. I love to have this with super spicy vinegar. Try this Crispy Nilasing na Hipon (Fried Shrimp Marinated in Wine) for pulutan, lunch, or dinner. Enjoy!

• 1 pound shrimp, head and shell on • ¾ cup all purpose flour • ¼ cup Shao Xing Cooking wine • ¼ teaspoon ground black

pepper • 1½ teaspoons garlic salt • ¼ teaspoon ground cayenne red pepper • 3 tablespoons cornstarch • 1½ cups cooking oil

Instructions 1. Wash the shrimp with running water. Drain the water and place the shrimp in a bowl. 2. Add garlic salt and ground black pepper.

Our Lady of Caysasay Church. Byaheng pa-Taal!

Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage) at Manaoag Church ( Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of Manaoag ).

Sino ba si St. Martin of Tours?

Maging mapagpasalamat at huwag kang bibitaw!

Capricorn - Dec. 22 - Jan. 20

Taurus - April. 21 - May. 21

Gemini - May. 22 - June.

EXPRESS/IMPRESS : BARON GEISLER VS KIKO MATOS, AMANOS

“We should never apologize for having high standards in love, because the right man, or the man who really wants to be in your life will rise up to meet those standards,” saad pa ni Jodi na tila nag-iiwan tila may iba ring ipinapakahulugan.

“It has been a roller coaster ride these past few weeks. At this point, whenever I look back upon everything that happened I feel very humbled. From the bar fight, to getting kissed, to spraying ‘BEER’ at my [opponent], and being in the ring. I am just in awe,” mensahe ni Kiko sa kanyang Facebook matapos ang laban. “I would like to give credit and my respects to Baron Geisler for not giving up and taking all the hits. Baron Geisler is a strong [opponent] and with a heart of gold.” “I just took the challenge. I don’t pick fights and I never back down. I still feel I’m the winner here. We’re both are, but I feel na-challenge ko ang sarili ko.

IMPRESS: JODI STA. MARIA UMI-ACHY BREAKY HEART FOR REEL AND REAL Kasalukuyan napapanood sa sinehan ang Achy Breaky Heart ng Star Cinema na pinagbibidahan ni Jodi Sta. Maria.

“#CLARISMASORIANOSISON #PATIENTEXPERIENCOFFICER#patientexper ience Oh and by the way, how was it like to live so near me? Exactly 3 floors up in the same building were my children and i live. And did you also enjoyed your U.S trip recently? So excited to hear all about it, im pretty sure your husband will be so happy also. I do hope its all worth it.

RHIAN RAMOS JOINS HEART EVANGELISTA: THE WOMAN WITH "THE RAREST AD DESIRABLE HANDBAG" SOLENN, REVIVES A VILMA Maliban sa pagiging actress at bida sa Juan Happy Love Story ay marami pa ngang magagandang katangian ang isang Heart Evangelista. Chiz Escudero ay nakatakda umano nitong ilunsad ang kanyang business na may kinalaman sa all white and all black collection of clothes. “… fashion is something that is innate. Fashion has a lot to do with your passion, your life, and about the things that you want to do. You can’t just put

on a fur coat and say, “Oh, I love this.” You can’t just put on a designer dress but not be comfortable wearing it. Fashion has a lot to do with who you are,” saad ni Heart tungkol sa kanyang fashion sense sa panayam sa kanya ng Star Style. A week ago, the Instagram followers of the Juan Happy Love Story star were stunned with her newest handbag acquisition. It was a 25-centimeter Himalayan Birkin, which according to Vogue.com, is the ‘rarest and most desirable handbag in the world.’

LOISA ANDALIO, THE NEXT BIG STAR NA NGA BA?

SANTO'S CHARACTER

Mula pahina 1

“She eats almost anything like me. She’s sporty and kalog. It’s gonna be fun,” ani Solenn. “We are all honored to be a part of this show dahil alam namin na talagang acting piece siya para sa aming lahat. It requires everyone to give it their all. As actors and as lovers of our craft, it’s really an honor for us to receive a project like this,” saad ni Rhian. Narito rin sina Jazz Ocampo, Glydel Mercado, Stephanie Sol, Gab de Leon, Gee Canlas, JC Tiuseco, Sherilyn Reyes, Cheska Diaz, at Michael de Mesa.
