DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

By Ernie Horvath

You just purchased a new fishing rod for a specific type of fishing. You put a reel on the rod and went fishing but something just didn’t feel right. The rod and reel combo did not perform to your expectations. The distance and accuracy fell short of your requirements, and the sensitivity was poor or non-existent.

So, what went wrong? You thought you did your homework and checked with your fishing friends to get their input. You researched different manufactures on-line, and you wore the print off the pages of your favorite mail-order catalog. So off you go to your favorite tackle store armed with all the info you thought you needed. Talking to the salesperson they agree and say, “That’s what I use” or something along that line. The facts are: most rod manufactures mark the rod specs and actions ALMOST the same. For example, a medium action rod with an extra fast tip from one manufacturer is a medium action with a fast tip from another, even though both specify, extra-fast. Also the applications don’t cover the entire lure or fish species the rod applies to. Example: Find a rod marked for speckled trout or weakfish, GOOD LUCK! Actually some of the best inshore trout rods are marketed toward the bass community. Rods marked for shaky head or drop shot series in the lighter actions are perfect for speckled trout. (Just an example)

{IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL

}

However the biggest mistake folks make when buying a rod is they don’t bring the reel with them that they are going to use on the rod. Bring your reel filled with line, put it on the rod, take it out and cast it! See how the rod loads with the line through the guides, not deflecting the tip on the floor or ceiling in the store. That does nothing to tell you how the rod will perform. If the store won’t let you test cast the rod, find a store that will. If you’re still not satisfied, contact a reliable custom rod builder. They will spend the time with you to ensure you get the rod you need for your type of fishing and most of the time the custom rod prices are in-line with the highend factory rods. Next month, build your own custom fishing rod! Ernie Horvath – E.P.’S Custom Rod and Reel

Tying versus Snelling Fish Hooks

Commercial fishers in NZ use a type of circle hook (Tainawa pattern, Jap Hook) and snell their hooks to the fishing line. Most recreational fishers tie a knot to the eye of the hook as shown in the diagram on the right. As one would expect, the commercial fishers had it right.

Honey Walnut Shrimp

Ingredients: • 1lb large shrimp (peeled and deveined, with tails removed) • 1 cup water • 2/3 cup white sugar • ½ cup walnuts • 4 egg whites • 2/3 cup cornstarch • ¼ cup mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons honey • 1 tablespoon canned sweetened condensed milk • 1 cup oil (for frying)

Directions: 1. In a small sauce pan mix water and sugar. Bring to a boil and add the walnuts. Boil for 2 minutes, drain and place on a baking sheet to dry. 2. Meanwhile, beat egg whites in a medium bowl until foamy. Stir in cornstarch until it becomes somewhat thick.

Enjoy!

3. Dip shrimp into the batter. Heat oil in a deep fryer and fry shrimp in batches in oil until golden brown (about 5 minutes). Drain on paper towels. 4. In a serving bowl, mix mayonnaise, honey and sweetened condensed milk. Add shrimp and toss to coat with the sauce. Add walnuts and serve.

Well April is finally here and the fishing should really be heating up as everything is coming in from wintering offshore. There are still going to be some Red Fish in the creeks and around the inlets before they scatter out for the summer months. The Blue Fish and Flounder are here and this is when you are going to catch some of the biggest fish of the year in both species as the big chopper Blue Fish make a run from now until the end of May. Blue Fish can range anywhere from 5-20 LBS. and are best caught on top water plugs on the flats of Cape Lookout. They can also be taken on large bottom baits such as shad and cigar minnows. As for the Flounder, they are going to be coming in for the next several months after spending the winter offshore. They are ready to feed on live minnows that are prevalent this time of the year. The best baits to use this time of year are going to be live mud minnows or finger mullet, Deep Creek soft scented baits as well as the Gulp shrimp. Those of you that do not have scent baits you need to try out ProCure bait scents that come in just about any scent you would want for this area. For those that like to bottom fish for Sea Mullet and Gray Trout they should still be around before the water gets to warm. The best method to catch these fish is using a common Spec rig tipped with fresh shrimp. They are usually caught best around the Morehead City port and then out around Cape Lookout near the old Coast Guard Station. Both of these species like deep holes and channels. I hope that everyone gets a chance to get in on some of the best fishing on the East Coast before the heat of summer gets here. Capt. Noah Lynk

Taking Light TackleBy Richie Fishing to a New Level Gaines Ask a group of light tackle saltwater anglers what their favorite artificial lure is and you’ll probably get as many answers as there are anglers in the group. Many will say they just cannot narrow it down to one lure. Well I sure can. In the past few years I’ve experimented substantially and had terrific success with one certain type of artificial. This year I used them exclusively and my clients and I caught stripers up to forty inches, we caught fish from two feet of water down to forty and every depth in between. In addition to stripers of all sizes, we caught largemouth bass, yellow perch, white perch, bluefish, weakfish, and Spanish mackerel. Heck, I even caught a slew of dolphin on these lures while fishing offshore last summer. What is my favorite artificial lure you ask? Well, let me tell you a little story first. An Event Occurred That Changed The Way I Looked At Artificial Lures I am a former largemouth bass fisherman. The goal in this sport was to put fish into the boat and I got upset if I lost a fish. We went to great lengths to ensure that this didn’t happen. Many lures had multiple sets of treble hooks and these rigs certainly did their job, often too well, as you will read. As I began to expand my fishing and spent more time chasing stripers in the Chesapeake region I made use of my bass fishing equipment. One day an event occurred that changed the way I looked at artificial lures. I was casting a RattleTrap to a submerged rock pile and hooked a very nice striper. I fought the six-pound fish to the boat quickly to ensure a safe release. As I bent over the side of the boat to remove the front set of treble hooks from its jaws, the striper shook its head violently and the rear trebles imbedded deeply in my right hand. Now I had a problem, a big problem. Each time I would release pressure on the fish to try and work the hooks free it would start flopping around. When the striper flopped I flopped with it. If there had been anyone nearby to observe the goings on in my boat they would have thought I was crazy. I tried unsuccessfully for several minutes to unhook either the fish or myself to no avail. Finally, I lifted the fish into the boat and basically sat on it, straddling it with all my 225 pounds to hold it still. Eventually I was able to get the hooks out of the fish and released it. With great pain and effort I gingerly removed the hooks from my hand. Sitting there shaking and grimacing I began to laugh out loud, wondering who got the worst of the battle, me, or the striper. Having been on the receiving end of the damage inflicted by a treble hook I vowed then and there to find a better way. From that day on I began to experiment with different lures to see if I could find a better way of catching fish and reducing the damage inflicted by the hooks. In the years since I believe I have and this experimentation led me to discover my favorite artificial lure - any lure with a single hook. Twitch Can Only Be Described As Awesome Most anglers use certain lures for specific fishing situations and I am no exception. Over the past few years I’ve been able to eliminate almost all treble hook lures from my fishing arsenal and replace them with single hook lures that do the same job. In many cases the single hook substitutes perform better and offer more advantages than treble hook versions. When fishing in clear, shallow water it’s darn hard to beat a Rapala or other stick bait. You can work it sooo sloooow that the fish just can’t resist it. Trouble is, they have three sets of hooks, and one usually ends up in the fish’s gills or its face, not good! I looked for a single hook replacement for this situation and found outstanding substitutes. Bass Assassin Lures of Mayo, FL makes a variety of soft plastic baits that work well here. Their five-inch Shad Assassin rigged weightless on a 5/0 offset hook is an absolute killer when twitched next to structure as it sinks slowly toward the bottom. A larger seven-inch Shad Assassin is also available and their six-inch Twitch can only be described as awesome. This bait is more slender than the shads and it undulates in wide wiggles when twitched. Rigged properly these lures are also completely snag-proof. You can work them right up against rocks, pilings, aquatic vegetation, and other structure with no fear of getting snagged. Depth control can be adjusted by adding weight as needed. The baits rigged on a large hook will sink very slowly, about three-inches per second. For a faster sink just wrap a little lead around the hook shank or insert a small finish nail into the plastic body. For even more depth they can be rigged on lead heads. These lures are available in a rainbow of different colors. My personal favorites are Albino, Glass Minnow, and Gizzard Shad. Think about it, you pay $5.00 for a stick

bait. With Assassins you can get close to twenty baits for that sum. There are many other brands of soft plastic lures that will work as well. We’ve had good success with Slugo’s, Fin-S-Fish, and baits made by Gambler. Though much of my fishing is for stripers, I’ve found that these lures will entice most all game fish to hit with reckless abandon. These Two Attributes Give The Bait Great Action Search baits, such as RattleTraps have an important place in a light tackle angler’s bag of tricks. They allow you to cover water quickly and work varying depths efficiently. Their short fat profile and tight wiggle was hard to replicate in a single hook lure but perseverance paid off. I’ve found a suitable replacement in the good old four-inch Sassy Shad. Not just any shad will do, there are significant differences in the design of the plastic bodies, and the lure must also be rigged correctly. When shopping for a “proper” Sassy Shad pay particular attention to two things; the softness of the plastic and the thickness of the body immediately in front of the knob on the tail. A desirable bait will be made of soft, pliable plastic, which will promote action when the bait is retrieved through the water. Harder plastic will inhibit action. Also, the section in front of the tail knob on preferred baits will be very thin. Here again, the thin section will allow the tail to generate maximum wobble. You can also trim thicker baits to achieve this. A pair of scissors will do the trick nicely. These two attributes give the bait great action even when retrieved slowly. In contrast, poorly made versions require near full speed retrieves to get any kind of action out of them. Rigging the baits correctly is not terribly difficult; it’s more common sense than anything is. Simply slide the plastic body onto a lead jig head but pay attention to ensure the body is rigged true to the hook shank. A kink or curl will cause it to run to one side and kill the natural profile. The weight of the lead head is very important. Too heavy a head will not allow you to work shallow water effectively and too light a head will not permit penetration into the depths. My theory is to use as light a weight as possible as a slow fall is better than a fast one. A good rule of thumb is one-quarter ounce for depths to ten feet and then add a quarter-ounce for each ten feet of water depth after that. Therefore, we would use a half-ounce down to about twenty-feet and three-quarters down to thirty. Wind and tide conditions will affect this rule so be prepared to make adjustments. Sassy Shads, like Assassins are available in many different colors. As my favorite Rattle Tarps were chrome/blue and shad, I went to silver flake and black shad Sassy Shads and never looked back. The shorter, fatter profile of the Sassy Shad is very close to the Trap. We can fish it from one to thirty feet of water, make long casts to cover an area quickly, and we rarely loose a fish once its hooked, something that all to frequently happens with Traps. No Better Lure Than “Heavy Metal.” Jigging spoons have recently regained popularity with the light tackle saltwater crowd and rightly so. When stripers or weakfish are schooled up there is no better lure to catch them with than “heavy metal.” No breaking news here on the switch from treble hooks. Many manufacturers already offer their spoons in single hook versions. For those that don’t it’s easy to switch out the trebles for a stout single hook. There is one bit of advice on this though. You can increase the percentage of hook-ups significantly by adding white feathers or hair to the hook. We’ve found that without it the fish often hit the spoon but miss the hook. The theory on the success of the feathers/hair is that it gives the fish a visual to aim for. Instead of hitting the flashy body they hit the white hair which covers and hides the hook. These lures are only the tip of the iceberg. Savvy anglers throughout the region are developing single hook substitutes all the time and I’m sure you can too if you put your mind to it. In fact, I challenge all of my fellow light tackle anglers in the region to develop their own substitute lures and share them with us. Treble hooks certainly have a place and I am not against them, I’m just a fellow angler in search of a better way to fish. Collectively, light tackle anglers can easily take the sport to another level by just making a few changes in the way they fish.

BURNSIDE BOPPER

Big Al’s Fish Flash Big Al’s Fish Flash is the most significant advancement in fish attractors since the invention of the original dodger. Anglers instantly understand the benefits of an attractor that rotates around its linear axis, puts a brilliant flash into the water, works at any speed, is virtually drag free and truly attracts and catches more fish. The fin induced rotation of the Fish Flash® emits a very powerful and specific vibration that attracts fish. And once the fish is hooked, the no drag design allows the angler to experience the sporting fight of the fish, not the drag of the tackle. Four sizes and eight vibrant colors give the angler a wide variety of options for different species, light and weather conditions.

The BURNSIDE BOPPER (patent pending) originated from a novel concept to produce what fishermen want. The BURNSIDE BOPPER is designed to allow farther casting distances due to the 3/4 ounce weight, better visibility due to the 4” pear shaped cork, and better durability due to the 1/16” stainless steel rod. The BURNSIDE BOPPER was built to last with No. 7 #75 lb swivels and a reinforced bottom eyelet to prevent the premature failure of the float.
