In a time not long ago, I could readily find anchorages

with little or no one in them. The seclusion was always a happy respite from the culturized world. I could drift around fishing from my dinghy for hours on end without interruption. Now-a-days it seems that most anchorages are full to the shoreline and dinghy drifts are social events where throngs of dinghies raft up to have a sundown party. I participated in just such an event last week.

Business

One of the more humorous moments of the evening was the sighting of a turd floating by. Even as full-grown adults, we easily found humor in turds. While the humor in it was sophomoric in nature no one actually wanted to ruin the spirit of the event with a serious discussion about the defilement of the very thing that brought us all here. We all migrate here for the pristine clear water, swimming, diving, fishing and more. But who really wants to get in the water with turds floating by?

The rest of the world has not even bothered to think about these issues yet. Many of our favored ports of call have no infrastructure for pump-outs and the water is a veritable cesspool. Even in the Bahamas it is a pump overboard at will situation. The islands have a greater water circulation than most regions, but still the waste goes somewhere.

Here in the USA most marinas have pump-out facilities. Holding tanks are woefully small on most boats which puts even well intended captains in a stinky position. It is simply too easy to turn the Y valve, pump and start fresh.

But there is a better solution both home and abroad for us all. Composting units for boats are more cost effective, easier to maintain, and simplify a traditionally serious plumbing system. A compost head does away with the holding tank and the necessity for a pump-out. The compost product can be safely deposited in any trash can or sprinkled around on existing dirt. The urine is a little different situation. Urine is mostly sterile.

I say “mostly” because it does have a cocktail of microbes in it, but they are harmless to large bodies of water. While I would really rather you dump your urine in a toilet in a marina it is far safer to pump overboard than the turds.

The Florida Keys are a No Discharge Zone (NDZ) and a few other locations are seriously considering legislation to the same end. It is amazing to me that this issue is even open for discussion. Is there really enough here to discuss? Why can’t we simply make all waters an NDZ? At the end of the day please ask yourself if you are willing to dive into the water immediately after you dump any of your waste into it. If the answer is not only no but …….then maybe you should reconsider.

And don’t even make me talk about oil, gas, diesel fuel etc. etc.

Two Sailors Meet in the Mountains Patrick and Erica met in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Patrick’s pick up line to Erica was “Do you want to sail to the Caribbean?” Erica provided him with an eye roll. Little did he know, but she was also quite the capable sailor having already sailed much of the Caribbean, French Polynesia, Mallorca, and New England.

Fast-forward three years; Patrick and Erica are full time live aboard cruisers together with their adorable 20-month-old son, also named Patrick. Home is on their 49 foot 1975 Hinckley sailboat named Irie.

Patrick stumbled upon and purchased the yacht in 2013 in Boston where he is from and grew up learning to sail with his father. (Also named Patrick) Erica is from Connecticut, but has lived the last 11 years in New York City. She spent her childhood summers in the Narragansett Bay/ Newport area and had always wanted to learn to sail. While working early on in her career at the World Financial Center in Manhattan, she decided that someday would be “now”. She signed up for sailing lessons in one of the busiest harbors of the world, and joined a sailing club located in North Cove, at the World Financial Center (now known as Brookfield Place).

When asked why they decided at such a young age to become full time cruisers, they responded, “We wanted to simplify our lives.”

They had originally had the boat in Boston Harbor before moving it to Newport, RI. S/V Irie officially hails from Newport, RI, where Patrick’s grandfather was from and where Erica spent her childhood summers. They cruised New England until October of 2015 when they set their sights and sails South.

Funny enough, life hasn’t ended up so simple after all.

They have been blessed with a baby boy in July 2016 presenting a whole new set of challenges for how to raise a baby on a boat. They take it all in stride commenting that “the boat is already essentially baby-proofed. Everything has rounded edges!” All jokes aside, they have taken safety seriously, but plan to continue cruising as a family.

Unfortunately, the vessel was collided into twice in one year. Both collisions occurred while docked in marinas and fortunately they were not aboard for either. They made their way to the Wilmington area at the recommendation of another cruising couple. They have really enjoyed the area and have spent the last nine months living as locals in a Carolina Beach condo overlooking the ICW, getting to know the local spots, making friends, and , of course, working on the boat.

The boat is scheduled to have repairs completed this spring and they hope to be off onto their next adventure. Their immediate plans are to sail back to New England for the summer and then return to their winter cruising grounds of the Bahamas. Long-term plans include sailing the Mediterranean.

When asked what they like most about the cruising lifestyle, they say it is the people they have met along the way. They have made many life-long friends through their sailing adventures, mostly retirees, but also many families like them.

Two of their favorite places they have visited so far are Hope Town in the Bahamas and Charleston S.C. Hope Town, they said, “is a beautiful quiet little island with amazing people. Charleston was the first long stop we had after setting out. We loved the architecture, the restaurants, the city itself and of course the people!”

The entire story of Patrick and Erica would take up this entire magazine.
