Scrape, Scrape, Scrape Sunsets viewed from a boat, over cocktails with friends are something akin to church attendance. If you are in a big harbor you will likely hear one or more conch horns, maybe a bangsite cannon, or if you are really lucky someone will blow “Call to Colors” followed by “Taps” on a bugle. After the main event the temperatures cool down with a sea breeze as the land mass releases it’s stored up heat. This is the time for good food and the inevitable conversations about our latest boating conundrums.

The other night just such a conversation occurred with a fellow who claimed that he is having problems with his fuel economy and further, that his boat trim tabs don’t seem to be operating correctly. His logical progression was to link the two problems meaning that the trim tabs were creating drag and not allowing his hull to reach its normal efficiency. He assumed that the trim tab problem was a hydraulic issue and I agreed to bring some tools over to help resolve it.

Now, hydraulic issues are really straight forward; you fix any leaks, bleed the system of air and voila they start working again. I’m thinking to myself that this will be an easy situation that will absolutely require a sea trial to the Gulf Stream and Mahi for the next sunset. Unfortunately, as he boarded his dinghy to leave later in the evening I could not help but be amazed at the marine growth on it. I mean it had barnacles and green hair a foot long. Ockham’s Razor persuades us to spend our time trouble-shooting issues starting with solutions that require the fewest number of assumptions. After seeing how un-kept his dinghy bottom was I couldn’t help wonder what his mother-ship looked like. If the mother-ship (a fifty foot Bertram) had half the growth of his dinghy, that would explain all his problems.

The next day I loaded up some tools and still bothered by the growth observation I loaded an air bottle and huka hose. Upon arrival at his boat he immediately invited me onboard. I told him that if he didn’t mind I would like to jump in the water and inspect his trim tabs before we started messing with the hydraulics. I couldn’t tell if the expression on his face was puzzlement or amusement, but he said “knock yourself out”.

I donned a mask and snorkel to have a cursory look. Ockham’s Razor saved a lot of trouble-shooting. His entire hull made his dinghy look clean. There was so much cretaceous growth on his trim tabs that it was a wonder that they moved at all. Three hours and two bottles of air later I was too wore out from scraping to even consider a sea trial.

However, the next day the sea trial was great, the boat trimmed flawlessly, and the Mahi fillets were a wonderful addition to our story at sunset. I let him scrape the dinghy himself.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT How and when was Off the Hook Yacht Sales founded?

Off The Hook Yacht Sales was actually founded during my last semester at UNCW, and we became an official LLC in January 2012. All throughout high school and college I was involved with buying boats for resale, and as early as I can remember I have had an obsession with finding deals on boats for family and friends. By the time I was a senior in college, I was flipping 3 to 4 boats at a time, and I realized it had the potential to be a business. After graduation I broke the news to my parents that I was going to go into the boating business rather than becoming an accountant, and they helped me secure an investment. From there, we started to grow.

When did you realize your company had the potential to grow into what it has become today?

I did not realize what potential we had until I moved my office to Marina Street in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina and hired the right people which has been the major key to our success. During our first few months of operation in Wilmington, Allie Johnson joined OTHYS as ourOffice Manager. She dedicated herself to successfully organizing the office and managing the day-to-day activities, allowing me to concentrate on creating an excellent team and buying and selling boats.

Kyle Warren worked with me throughout college and helped me build a strong network of suppliers as well as built relationships with brokerages all over the country. Brian Dressler came to OTHYS as a UNCW intern who introduced me to the right people to work on the boats. By the time he graduated from college he had proven himself as one of the best brokers in the industry. Jeff Pyles joined the company a few months later and he managed to finalize deals that I did not think would ever be possible. Kyle Ginthner joined the team as a broker and an expert with SEO and Marketing. With Kyle’s help we were all over the internet and Google pages in no time. As far as the service end of my company goes, we are fortunate to have Jamie Forehand who I consider to be one of the best mechanics in the Carolinas.

With the hard work of my team and the help of my family, every year we were growing 100% or more. I realized what potential we had by our third year when banks started to actually acknowledge us. By this time we had a track record, solid earnings, and we had proven that we are here to stay.

What lead you to move locations from Wrightsville Beach to your new location on Market street?

With a growing team and inventory, we needed room for offices as well as boat storage. While Wrightsville may have offered a better view, moving from 600 sq/ft to 6000sq/ft has been critical in growing the company. Market Street also offers great exposure and we expect walk-in traffic to increase as the weather warms up.

What type of used boats do you carry?

We carry every make and model you can imagine. Since we are a used boat dealership, we are not confined by what we are able to offer. We specialize in boats geared at fishing, but will have bow riders, cabin cruisers, and luxury yachts in inventory on any given day.

In fact, we are currently importing a 2007 Ferretti 690 from France that will be available for sale here in the US this spring. If there is something that a customer wants that we do not have in stock, we have the connections to find it; locally or internationally.

What sets Off The Hook apart from other boat dealers?

We are able to make deals that no other brokerage can match. Since we own our inventory, we are flexible and will ensure that we can put our customers in their dream boat. Off the Hook has rapidly moving inventory and can buy, sell, and ship to and from anywhere in the world.

For brokerage, our ability to take trades is key for making deals happen. Our team does whatever it takes to sell your boat, even if that means we have to take in a trade. That opens up an entire new market. We have industry leading marketing and will make sure your boat gains maximum exposure.

What lay in the future for Off the Hook?

Just last week we opened a location in Annapolis, MD. We are now a licensed brokerage in FL and will be opening our next office in South FL. We also just took on Midnight Express Powerboats and are working on acquiring an additional major boat line.
